The new crop of Congressmembers are far more savvy than the ones they’re replacing. They’re more interesting in cleaning out the corruption and exposing it and all the deep ties between industry and Congress (the lobbyists, the PACs, and the money that flows to members and then the members decide to go into the lobbying business to accelerate their own wealth).
They’re going to take hits - from lobbyists and PACs and people who don’t want light shed on this.
They’re going to make missteps. It is natural that it happens.
They will learn, and they’re getting OJT that is invaluable down the road.
Would I wish that Rep. Omar hadn’t made anti-Semitic statements? Yup. Indisputably yes.

This is why they want the country to be run like a business — where only the wealthiest have any real say.

I may be out of the loop on what is and is not anti-semitic, but she wasn’t far off. AIPAC lobbies on behalf of Israel to get the government to act in favor of Israel, this includes fundraising, donations etc. Same goes for any other PAC and as we’ve seen money talks and there are plenty of politicians who are bought and paid for by plenty of PACs. I think republicans are more “pro-Israel” because their base is “pro-Israel” and the reason their base is “pro-israel” is because of “prophecies” that require Israel to exist so it can be destroyed all over again.

Except Israel’s “sway” over Congress has little if anything to do with AIPAC lobbying or donations. It’s because the End Times evangelicals are a huge voting bloc. (and also, because Israel’s medical and tech R&D is pretty damn awesome and useful. and because Israel’s intel about Al Qaeda, ISIS and other Islamic terror organizations is miles beyond what we could do ourselves).

I agree that it could be “seen” that way and people like David Duke say it out right. I don’t think she “meant” it that way but people did take it that way. It is unfortunate that being critical of Israel and Israeli policy is seen as anti-semitic but I also believe that the leadership of Israel (Netanyahu) and the right wing in Israel like it that way. Criticize their bombing campaigns? Anti-semitic. Criticize civilian killings? Anti-Semitic. See my first response to Charles on this thread. I cover the End Times kooks as being an outsized influence. Yes their medical and tech R&D is good and useful and their intel has been helpful as well. I still think it’s more lobbying influence and base influence in the end, at least domestically here.

Israel’s relationship with the US has loaded connotations.
There’s the religious aspects. Christian fundamentalists since 1967 have backed a strong Israel in part of the fundamentalist hope of seeing the End Times and Apocalypse and the Rapture. They need Israel exist to fulfill their religious beliefs. Israel, for their part, have sought support wherever they could get it because it’s historically been in short supply and Israeli security is always on a knife’s edge due to being significantly outnumbered by its Arab neighbors.
This has strained relations with American Jewry that has warned of this relationship and beliefs undermining Israel’s long term safety, since it can push Israel to doing things that would actually undermine their security.
Israeli technology has been an outgrowth of the need to stay ahead of Israel’s enemies and rivals, and global companies have come to rely on Israel for tech and biomed development on everything from AI to texting/messaging to using GPS data and traffic (Waze) and pharma developments (Teva). There’s chip development (Motorola, Intel) and all kinds of companies have R&D in Israel. Israeli universities like Technion even have partnerships with American universities (Cornell) and have a campus here in NYC metro.
The Israelis have plugged in to the Internet and are integral to quite a bit of development work.
AIPAC is often seen as the bellweather for American Jewish support of Israel, and it’s the job of the PAC to make sure that Israel retains strong support among Americans.
GOPers have long tried to make inroads into the historical support for Israel among Democrats and to try and get them voting for the GOP. We saw that in earnest with Trump in 2016. They’ll be at it again in 2020. Just watch.

Myanmar isn’t the root of the tree of three religions. Israel is the spiritual home to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. All can trace their existence and key events to the same few square miles (and that’s literally true - the Old City of Jerusalem is a few square miles).
Israel occupies an outsized fascination in the media and reporting, and there is a double standard where Israeli misconduct is treated far worse than say China’s mistreatment. Decades of war/conflict with the Palestinians doesn’t help nor does decades of mistrust, propaganda, and a failure of leaders to make the hard decisions to seek peace - or carry through on it.

Like I said, I knew a lot about the first part and the tech part doesn’t surprise me in the least. Heck it was an Israeli company who made one of the first IM clients (ICQ), I remember it, I had it. Waze was also developed by Israel. I know the relationship is tricky, I just think the religious side is what holds more sway in this country at a domestic level. There’s also the fact we are Israel’s biggest arms supplier and have a lot of economic entanglements. That doesn’t mean people shouldn’t be able to criticize the country.

There’s also the fact that people look at it differently when leaders are oppressing their own people, which is in no way right. Israel is seen as oppressing another group of people (the palestinians) not something along the lines of Myanmar or some other countries that attack their own people, or minorities of their own people. Israel occupies an outsized fascination in the media and reporting, and there is a double standard where Israeli misconduct is treated far worse than say China’s mistreatment. Decades of war/conflict with the Palestinians doesn’t help nor does decades of mistrust, propaganda, and a failure of leaders to make the hard decisions to seek peace - or carry through on it.
Given that we fund some Israeli actions not everyone likes but not similar Chinese actions, it’s just not the same. When you pay for it you are more responsible for it. I actually find the Israeli/Chinese comparison strange. 🤔

We just reported that the social media platform adopted by the racist “alt-right” is embroiled in chaos.
This is the same site where white supremacist Robert Bowers posted antisemitic conspiracy theories before he was charged with murdering 11 Jews in a Pittsburgh synagogue in October — and where another pair of users were accused the very next month of plotting their own attack.
Payment processors and web-hosting companies that work with Gab cut ties with the platform. It was a huge blow.
Gab reported “a 90% decline in payments for our subscription services,” according to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings it submitted in December. Since its launch in August 2016, the site has lost more than $350,000.
But Gab was still limping along until our Hatewatch investigation went public at the end of January.
We found that Gab’s founder, Andrew Torba, might be in trouble with the SEC; that Gab’s crowdfunding page is heavily promoting a feature it hasn’t actually had since the summer of 2018; and that the platform appears to be wildly inflating its user count.
To reach Gab’s reported number of 835,000 “persons,” or users, for example, it would have had to gain thousands of new users every day in November and December. That’s unlikely.
“We reached out for an analysis of the number of active users of Gab — accounts who actually logged in and posted content to the site over a span of a week in January — and received a number that was below 20,000 unique users,” Intelligence Project Director Heidi Beirich told The Daily Beast. “That would be a massive difference in community size from what the company is advertising to the public and government regulators.”
In the days following our report, Gab locked, then unlocked its Twitter account. It announced it would no longer be supporting an Android app (its only option after Apple rejected the app outright). It went offline. It came back online only to lock down its member registration; the site is now either invite-only, or is canceling services entirely, depending on who’s asking.
Gab advertises itself as a “free speech” alternative to Twitter or Facebook, but it would be more accurate to call it what it is: a haven for dangerous white supremacists. Racist memes, “white genocide” conspiracy theories, and conversations about violence typify the kind of hate speech that litters the platform.
We’re proud of our role in Gab’s decline. We’re continuing to monitor the platform — and other sites like it — as well as the role that the internet at large is playing in the radicalization of people like Robert Bowers, Dylann Roof and other extremists.

Yeah I’ve been hearing Benjamins as slang for money (usually a good amount of money) for a long time.
I’m wondering if there may be an age thing at play, with younger Lizards more willing to interpret the “All About the Benjamins, Baby” in context as a pop-culture reference to a popular song about money, and older Lizards interpreting the tweet as an antisemitic dogwhistle from a mostly unknown, newly elected Congressperson who happens to be Muslim, based on the coincidence of Netanyahu and the guy on the hundred dollar bill sharing a first name.
Largely innocent blunder or plausibly deniable undercover antisemitism? There’s no real way of knowing unless and until a pattern establishes itself.
That said, displays and acts of antisemitism are on the rise, domestically and overseas. A heightened degree of sensitivity is understandable and advisable.
Representative Omar has apologized publicly and appears to be treating this as a learning experience.

The problem with the statement “it’s all about the benjamins” is that vagueness what “it” was. There are anti-semites (and racists, etc) who make repeated vague insinuations, and then respond with bad faith arguments of being falsely accused when called on their bigotry. About this “Benjamin” thing. My 2 cents. There was a movie - All About the Benjamin’s. Was it about Israel? Nope Ice Cube made a movie - it involved $100 bills. Benjamins have been lingo for money since I was a kid, so 15 years at least. Unless she also put another reference to antisemitism in that same post/thought - I would directly relate Benjamins to $100 bills.
Life is context. The Right and Left come from different contextual worlds. The right side is dying a slow and loud death. The Left is just starting out (younger) and thus likely where this divide in thought comes from.
The Benjamins thing is a red herring, she wasn’t referring to Netanyahu but if she had simply said “it’s all about the money” that wouldn’t have been any better in context. One day something bursts the bubble, at least for you, and suddenly you are outside looking in. Boom, you see what’s been clear to everyone else outside the bubble for a long time.
Granted she is and probably always will be economically conservative. But she is now seeing who else was in the so called tent and realizing how god awful they really are.

According to this (from the US Department of Energy), we produce as much electricity with coal today as we did in the early 1980s… while producing about three times more electricity from other sources. Margaret McKeown and Jacqueline Nguyen affirmed summary judgment in favor of the Department of Homeland Security in lawsuits filed by a handful of environmental organizations and California challenging the federal government’s waiver of 37 environmental laws under the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996.
The Ninth Circuit found “the plain text” of the act “granted DHS authority to construct the border barrier projects.” The panel also found it lacked jurisdiction to consider any argument challenging the waivers themselves.
“Because the projects are statutorily authorized and DHS has waived the environmental laws California and the environmental groups seek to enforce, we affirm the district court’s grant of summary judgment to DHS,” McKeown wrote.
