The new crop of Congressmembers are far more savvy than the ones they’re replacing. They’re more interesting in cleaning out the corruption and exposing it and all the deep ties between industry and Congress (the lobbyists, the PACs, and the money that flows to members and then the members decide to go into the lobbying business to accelerate their own wealth).

They’re going to take hits - from lobbyists and PACs and people who don’t want light shed on this.

They’re going to make missteps. It is natural that it happens.

They will learn, and they’re getting OJT that is invaluable down the road.

Would I wish that Rep. Omar hadn’t made anti-Semitic statements? Yup. Indisputably yes.

She also apologized.

I’m still waiting for Trump, Trump Jr., and others in Trumpworld to apologize for equating goddamned Nazis with the people protesting them. I’m still waiting for the apologies for the blood libel slurs against George Soros. We’re still waiting for the calls for them to resign from the GOP.

That’s the difference. That’s the difference that Democrats have to show everyone as we head into another election season when the GOP are held to a different standard and their abuse, bigotry, and hate are ignored or excused by a media that looks to balance it with issues among Democrats where the Democrats are already looking to clean up from within.

Power grab by citizens who are not wealthy but are in the majority. Let’s be honest here; the Republicans want voting to be one dollar, one vote. So the number of votes you are accorded depends on your wealth. It’s just like publicly traded companies — one vote per share and if you have no shares, you have no votes. This is why they want the country to be run like a business — where only the wealthiest have any real say.

re: #1 Charles Johnson

I may be out of the loop on what is and is not anti-semitic, but she wasn’t far off. AIPAC lobbies on behalf of Israel to get the government to act in favor of Israel, this includes fundraising, donations etc. Same goes for any other PAC and as we’ve seen money talks and there are plenty of politicians who are bought and paid for by plenty of PACs. I think republicans are more “pro-Israel” because their base is “pro-Israel” and the reason their base is “pro-israel” is because of “prophecies” that require Israel to exist so it can be destroyed all over again.

Except Israel’s “sway” over Congress has little if anything to do with AIPAC lobbying or donations. It’s because the End Times evangelicals are a huge voting bloc. See my first response to Charles on this thread. I cover the End Times kooks as being an outsized influence. My continued position here is that, in particular, the problem isn’t Israel, persay. The problem is Likud. Unfortunately, the compounding problem is that Likud has a general stranglehold on the almighty narrative in the same way the GOP has here, thus they get to generally define what ‘America/Israel’ is.

Myanmar’s human rights record is exponentially worse than Israel’s, but they get less than 1/10 the criticism. Half the African countries, half the Central American countries, and several Asian countries, have human rights records that are exponentially worse than Israel’s, but they also get less than 1/10 the criticism.

There’s a pretty extreme double standard at play in what inspires criticism of the world’s only Jewish regime.

Agree with that too. I do think if I may though part of what makes people focus on Israel is they are democratic and they are the US’s top ally in that region. I think that probably plays a role too but I definitely understand that point you’re making as well.

re: #49 Brother Holy Cruise Missile of Mild Acceptance

Israel’s relationship with the US has loaded connotations.

There’s the religious aspects. Christian fundamentalists since 1967 have backed a strong Israel in part of the fundamentalist hope of seeing the End Times and Apocalypse and the Rapture. They need Israel exist to fulfill their religious beliefs. Israel, for their part, have sought support wherever they could get it because it’s historically been in short supply and Israeli security is always on a knife’s edge due to being significantly outnumbered by its Arab neighbors.

This has strained relations with American Jewry that has warned of this relationship and beliefs undermining Israel’s long term safety, since it can push Israel to doing things that would actually undermine their security.

Israeli technology has been an outgrowth of the need to stay ahead of Israel’s enemies and rivals, and global companies have come to rely on Israel for tech and biomed development on everything from AI to texting/messaging to using GPS data and traffic (Waze) and pharma developments (Teva). There’s chip development (Motorola, Intel) and all kinds of companies have R&D in Israel. Israeli universities like Technion even have partnerships with American universities (Cornell) and have a campus here in NYC metro.

The Israelis have plugged in to the Internet and are integral to quite a bit of development work.

AIPAC is often seen as the bellweather for American Jewish support of Israel, and it’s the job of the PAC to make sure that Israel retains strong support among Americans.

GOPers have long tried to make inroads into the historical support for Israel among Democrats and to try and get them voting for the GOP. We saw that in earnest with Trump in 2016. They’ll be at it again in 2020. Just watch.

There’s a pretty extreme double standard at play in what inspires criticism of the world’s only Jewish regime.

Myanmar isn’t the root of the tree of three religions. Israel is the spiritual home to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. All can trace their existence and key events to the same few square miles (and that’s literally true - the Old City of Jerusalem is a few square miles).

Israel occupies an outsized fascination in the media and reporting, and there is a double standard where Israeli misconduct is treated far worse than say China’s mistreatment. Decades of war/conflict with the Palestinians doesn’t help nor does decades of mistrust, propaganda, and a failure of leaders to make the hard decisions to seek peace - or carry through on it.

Like I said, I knew a lot about the first part and the tech part doesn’t surprise me in the least. Heck it was an Israeli company who made one of the first IM clients (ICQ), I remember it, I had it. Waze was also developed by Israel. I know the relationship is tricky, I just think the religious side is what holds more sway in this country at a domestic level. There’s also the fact we are Israel’s biggest arms supplier and have a lot of economic entanglements. That doesn’t mean people shouldn’t be able to criticize the country.

It’s one thing to say “I think the state of Israel holds undue influence over this country and it’s politicians through campaign contributions (ie all about the benjamins)” and saying “Those manipulative jews buy and sell politicians every day to further their zionist new world order”.

There’s also the fact that people look at it differently when leaders are oppressing their own people, which is in no way right. Israel is seen as oppressing another group of people (the palestinians) not something along the lines of Myanmar or some other countries that attack their own people, or minorities of their own people. I think all of them are terrible, no two ways about it. I even think some of the stuff this country has done is absolutely reprehensible.

SPLC Weekend Read: It’s not going well for Gab.

We just reported that the social media platform adopted by the racist “alt-right” is embroiled in chaos.

This is the same site where white supremacist Robert Bowers posted antisemitic conspiracy theories before he was charged with murdering 11 Jews in a Pittsburgh synagogue in October — and where another pair of users were accused the very next month of plotting their own attack.

Payment processors and web-hosting companies that work with Gab cut ties with the platform. It was a huge blow.

Gab reported “a 90% decline in payments for our subscription services,” according to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings it submitted in December. Since its launch in August 2016, the site has lost more than $350,000.

But Gab was still limping along until our Hatewatch investigation went public at the end of January.

We found that Gab’s founder, Andrew Torba, might be in trouble with the SEC; that Gab’s crowdfunding page is heavily promoting a feature it hasn’t actually had since the summer of 2018; and that the platform appears to be wildly inflating its user count.

To reach Gab’s reported number of 835,000 “persons,” or users, for example, it would have had to gain thousands of new users every day in November and December. That’s unlikely.

“We reached out for an analysis of the number of active users of Gab — accounts who actually logged in and posted content to the site over a span of a week in January — and received a number that was below 20,000 unique users,” Intelligence Project Director Heidi Beirich told The Daily Beast. “That would be a massive difference in community size from what the company is advertising to the public and government regulators.”

In the days following our report, Gab locked, then unlocked its Twitter account. It announced it would no longer be supporting an Android app (its only option after Apple rejected the app outright). It went offline. It came back online only to lock down its member registration; the site is now either invite-only, or is canceling services entirely, depending on who’s asking.

Gab advertises itself as a “free speech” alternative to Twitter or Facebook, but it would be more accurate to call it what it is: a haven for dangerous white supremacists. Racist memes, “white genocide” conspiracy theories, and conversations about violence typify the kind of hate speech that litters the platform.

We’re proud of our role in Gab’s decline. We’re continuing to monitor the platform — and other sites like it — as well as the role that the internet at large is playing in the radicalization of people like Robert Bowers, Dylann Roof and other extremists.

We’re working hard to expose hate, and we’re proud to have you with us in this fight.

re: #67 HappyWarrior

Yeah I’ve been hearing Benjamins as slang for money (usually a good amount of money) for a long time.

I’m wondering if there may be an age thing at play, with younger Lizards more willing to interpret the “All About the Benjamins, Baby” in context as a pop-culture reference to a popular song about money, and older Lizards interpreting the tweet as an antisemitic dogwhistle from a mostly unknown, newly elected Congressperson who happens to be Muslim, based on the coincidence of Netanyahu and the guy on the hundred dollar bill sharing a first name.

Largely innocent blunder or plausibly deniable undercover antisemitism? There’s no real way of knowing unless and until a pattern establishes itself.

That said, displays and acts of antisemitism are on the rise, domestically and overseas. A heightened degree of sensitivity is understandable and advisable.

Representative Omar has apologized publicly and appears to be treating this as a learning experience.

Here is what’s driving Anti-Semitism in America:

There is a Jewish (allegedly) person, very close to the President, cosplaying every anti-Semitic stereotype that’s been thrown out for the last millennium or so.

But enough about Stephen Miller.

And then there is Jared Kushner, who in addition to the cosplay of “sneaky crooked untrustworthy rich Joo,” is “negotiating” a “Middle East Peace Plan” which is actually a giant pyramid scheme (involving the actual pyramids?) It’s all a money-making scam for him.

Yep, but the weight Joe’s statements carry are entirely tied to the type of person he’s proven himself to be. What has she proven herself to be?

Okay, so now can we talk about the OTHER elephant in the room? i.e. how willing people are to attribute antisemitic intent to a Muslim.

Find me a Muslim leader somewhere who is willing to say emphatically that Israel has a right to exist as a nation state. Every time I hear a “moderate” Imam on BBC for instance ask for declarations on this topic, I hear at best a lot of hedging. I’m sure some of them support Israel’s right to exist, but know that acknowledging that would be a death sentence as some fatwa gets issued somewhere.

And, as I said in other replies. It’s not about the money? It’s not about them buying a lot of weapons from us? It’s not about their lobbying organizations throwing money at politicians? Because it is just as it is for so many other countries we support or even look the other way when they do something fucked up. I don’t care if it’s Israel, China, The UK or any of the rest. Money buys influence. It hasn’t got a damn thing to do with where the money is coming from and it’s kinda shitty that people took it that way. Then again I must be one of the “youngsters” who see things differently. Now if she had come out and said “those jews are buying out politicians to spread a vast zionist new world order” ala david duke, yeah I could see that as actual anti-semitism. I don’t see it as anti-semitic to point out that Israel lobbies our gov’t in the form of money and buying arms in order to effect how they are treated. Plenty of other countries do the exact same thing.

But here’s what rubs me. “All about the Benjamins” is entirely an American slang about money based on the person on the bill. Equating that phrase in this way:

All about the Benjamins ==> Benjamin Netanyahu ==> Jews and Money

is an entirely weird construct that seems to have risen because one person said it.

She was replying to/retweeting Greenwald’s tweet about the excessive influence of the Israeli government in American politics. I actually think the reference to Netanyahu is LESS problematic for most people than it being just about money, because clearly Netanyahu has too much influence over the GOP and the President.

maybe im slicing this too thin
the only thing i saw was an american colloquial construct

is there another benjamin in israeli politics?
otherwise, since she used the plural, it likely cant have been a reference to him conscious or otherwise

if she specifically had used the singular ‘all about the benjamin, baby’ yeah that woulda been deliberate (imo)

Minority groups who have been historically marginalized/oppressed/murdered have the right to decide what is offensive and don’t need to talk it out with everyone else and get approval to be angry. If you don’t get why they are angry maybe it’s because you don’t have the same life lens. I don’t get it but that’s my problem and they are not obligated to explain to my satisfaction.

About this “Benjamin” thing. My 2 cents. There was a movie - All About the Benjamin’s. Was it about Israel? Nope Ice Cube made a movie - it involved $100 bills. Benjamins have been lingo for money since I was a kid, so 15 years at least. Unless she also put another reference to antisemitism in that same post/thought - I would directly relate Benjamins to $100 bills.

Life is context. The Right and Left come from different contextual worlds. The right side is dying a slow and loud death. The Left is just starting out (younger) and thus likely where this divide in thought comes from.

The problem with the statement “it’s all about the benjamins” is that vagueness what “it” was. There are anti-semites (and racists, etc) who make repeated vague insinuations, and then respond with bad faith arguments of being falsely accused when called on their bigotry. Ilhan Omar’s apology is clear and considered, and was necessary, even though *I* did not read the original message as anti-semitic. It does not matter how I read it.

Look your a good guy I think. And you sincerely want to understand and that’s admirable. Unfortunately through our life filters we might never be able to understand. There will never be fixed rules for us to go by. And sometimes asking for rules or an explanation can seem like a challenge (“why is that offensive” can be a challenge or a request to understand but in immediate context will almost always come off as a challenge). It feels like a can’t win situation but I assume it’s better than being in the marginalized group.

The Benjamins thing is a red herring, she wasn’t referring to Netanyahu but if she had simply said “it’s all about the money” that wouldn’t have been any better in context. The offensive thing was lazily conflating die hard, reflexive US conservative support for Israel (which defines itself as a Jewish State) with money. In fact it’s mostly a product of decades of US diplomatic inertia driven by a mixture of promoting the only democracy in the region, cynical realpolitik, Christian evangelical supremacism, supercessionist dogma and end times fanaticism.

Today, one of the more obnoxious Baptists, and a former Southern Baptist (who left in the last year or so because the SBC was getting into the “social gospel” *snort*), came up with THIS equation (with my response).

He then doubled down:

But it’s sick to say that women pastors are the same as child molesters. That’s a sick and twisted view of women and if I was his wife, I’d bail and take the kids.

Good analysis by Rubin. To RWNJs, things like bashing Ihlan Omar or calling out Northam are a form of asymmetrical warfare. It stings the Dems, but the same criticism is wholly ineffective when used against the right-wingers themselves, since they do not care about antisemitism or racism, and they regard homophobia and Islamophobia as positive virtues.

Keeping within the theme of the last few days and Corey Stewart’s comments the other day…maybe Jennifer Rubin needed Trump to make it clear to her how deep racism and bigotry is in the Republican party.

Isn’t it good that people can learn and finally see the light?

Or, do we all need to stay within the boxes we already are in by our own devices or put there by others? Can no one ever become not a racist or bigot?

That may well be true. I think it’s really easy to dismiss the dogwhistles and such when they ARE dogwhistles. When they become bullhorns, that’s when you separate the died in the wool racists from those who simply can’t or won’t see it in their own ranks. Coal has been a declining source of electricity since 2000. According to this (from the US Department of Energy), we produce as much electricity with coal today as we did in the early 1980s… while producing about three times more electricity from other sources. So, is coal “important”? Sure. But it’s becoming less important, and should be treated as such… there’s probably some joke in there about how similar Trump is to coal, but I’m tired, so I’ll leave it to the more alert minds among us.

Think about it like this. You spend years living inside a certain bubble, you miss all this stuff because you are in the bubble. One day something bursts the bubble, at least for you, and suddenly you are outside looking in. Boom, you see what’s been clear to everyone else outside the bubble for a long time.

Granted she is and probably always will be economically conservative. But she is now seeing who else was in the so called tent and realizing how god awful they really are.

I grew up in a small town, all white. I was friends with a lot of people who turned out to be pretty goddamn awful but it took me getting out of the state and all the way across the country to see that. It also took that experience to undue years of learned prejudice and ignorance.

Is it Twain who said travel cures bigotry? We all know why right wingers hate public universities- because minds change if you let them grow.

Programming note—if you have access to The World Channel, “While I Breathe, I Hope,” the Bakari Sellers documentary, airs tonight at 8 pm as part of the “AfroPop” documentary series (we don’t get it in SC, so I’m still trying to figure out how to stream it on pbs.)

What does it mean to be young, Black, and a Democrat in the South? While I Breathe, I Hope unravels this question through the experiences of South Carolina politician Bakari Sellers. The film follows Sellers on his 2014 bid for lieutenant governor, through the Charleston shootings in 2015, and to the present as he takes on a national role on CNN and considers his future in Trump’s America.

Well, it’s amazing what automation does; you could have an entire facility run from a control room. Mining requires fewer and fewer people as bigger machines can do more with less. And oil/natgas rigs can require fewer drill rigs to drill over a bigger area with directional drilling.

But at this stage, there’s a need to build/install solar projects, and that takes bodies - installing on rooftops, in solar farms, etc.

Trump Waivers for Border Wall OK’d by Ninth Circuit

SAN DIEGO (CN) - The Ninth Circuit Monday affirmed the federal government’s authority to waive dozens of environmental laws to speed-up border wall construction near San Diego and Calexico, California, though one judge found it was a call for the Supreme Court, not the Ninth Circuit, to make.

In a 30-page opinion, U.S. Circuit Judges M. Margaret McKeown and Jacqueline Nguyen affirmed summary judgment in favor of the Department of Homeland Security in lawsuits filed by a handful of environmental organizations and California challenging the federal government’s waiver of 37 environmental laws under the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996.

The Ninth Circuit found “the plain text” of the act “granted DHS authority to construct the border barrier projects.” The panel also found it lacked jurisdiction to consider any argument challenging the waivers themselves.

“Because the projects are statutorily authorized and DHS has waived the environmental laws California and the environmental groups seek to enforce, we affirm the district court’s grant of summary judgment to DHS,” McKeown wrote.

Fuck everything.

Ok, so quick thoughts on the border wall decision:

First, the dissent is really a “we don’t have authority to review this case” dissent, and not a dissent on the merits. the reason for that dissent is because the law at issue, the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 has a provision that certain appeals have to go directly to the Supreme Court (which is probably right, but also slightly irrelevant since the decision would likely still be taken up to the Supreme Court).

Second, the IIRIRA (stupid, I know), basically allows the DHS to waive whatever laws it wants to in order to build a fence/wall/barrier on the southern border:

Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the Secretary of Homeland Security shall have the authority to waive all legal requirements such Secretary, in such Secretary’s sole discretion, determines necessary to ensure expeditious construction of the barriers and roads under this section. Any such decision by the Secretary shall be effective upon being published in the Federal Register.

That seems like an incredibly stupid bit of legislation. Which makes sense, since the 90s was full of a lot of incredibly stupid legislation.

Remember when we had some of those MEK types posting LGF Pages full of propaganda here? They kept getting down-voted and disappearing from the lists. They had a whole big group of accounts they registered in different names. Some very shady behavior.

That must be an uneasy alliance between them and the Pahlavi–MEK, according to Wiki, is socialist and logically seems like it should already have been opposing them before the Revolution…

Negotiators apparently have a deal in place to avoid a shutdown.

The bipartisan group negotiating to avoid another shutdown announced it had the broad outlines of a border security agreement to do so.

The top Democrats and Republicans on the House and Senate appropriations committees came out of a long Monday evening meeting to say they think they’ve reached a deal “in principle” to fully fund the government, which is set to run out of funds on Friday at midnight.

But they declined to discuss any details of the agreement, which would fully fund the government through the fall. Whatever the group has agreed upon still needs to pass both chambers of Congress — and win over President Trump, who is the big question mark in the equation.

“We reached an agreement in principle between us on all the homeland security and the other six bills,” Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-AL) told reporters Monday night as he emerged with Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and their House counterparts, Reps. Nita Lowey (D-NY) and Kay Granger (R-TX).

The entire “on border security” is a false claim… it is nothing less than to buy Trump’s claim that Democrats are “weak” on the border.

The issue with Trump is that he wants his bigotry enshrined in a physical monument. That is what the “wall” is all about.

I’d say that’s about right, the DNC has been willing to offer funds for repair/upgrades of existing fencing, but absolutely refuses funding for a wall. The devil will be in the details, but I can’t imagine after 30+ days of holding firm that they’d crumble now.

So a year ago, he could have had $25B for his wall and all he would have had to agree to was providing a pathway to (but not immediate) citizenship for Dreamers, and he rejected it because the racists who really run the WH balked at the idea of allowing a single “illegal” to become an American.

re: #357 wheat-dogg, raker of forests, master of steam

What are the odds of Trump vetoing it?

Dunno. That question was also lying on Square One: with no clear answer then, either.

The Orange Anus has backed himself -as usual - into a corner: he either vetoes the bill and gets an embarrassing override: or he gets to own another (colossally unpopular) shutdown.

Or he signs off on a budget deal, and gets to spin shit his way: either hoke up some sort of bogus “win”, and/or blame somebody/anybody else….

Negotiators apparently have a deal in place to avoid a shutdown.

Congressman David Price on Lawrence just said on Lawrence O’Donnell’s show he is pretty sure it will pass in both House and Senate though it is something no one is really happy with compared to what could be done.

Ball is going to be in Bozo’s court soon for a signature. He’ll kick it a few times with his big orange clown shoes.

Then he’ll figure out a way to say it is a win.

re: #205 ObserverArt

Keeping within the theme of the last few days and Corey Stewart’s comments the other day…maybe Jennifer Rubin needed Trump to make it clear to her how deep racism and bigotry is in the Republican party.

The whole point of dog whistles is that only dogs are supposed to hear them, everybody else thinks you’re nuts if you claim to have noticed a sound.

But in recent years, starting with the Obama campaign but becoming vastly more widespread in the Trump era — they’ve replaced the dog whistles with tubas. It’s impossible to avoid noticing; even people who wanted plausible deniability can’t avoid admitting they hear it too.
