If there’s one term I’d like to consign to the ash heap of history, it’s “Neoliberal”. It’s become as useless a term as “Socialism”.

AOC is becoming the rake to the GOP’s Sideshow Bob… every time they try to attack her, whack:

Of course, Trump isn’t necessarily the political genius he imagines himself to be—and neither, for that matter, is McConnell. Though the latter has a track record of conniving legislative successes, he may have misjudged the perception of the Green New Deal beyond the conservative echo chamber. In fact, according to one recent poll, a majority of Americans from both parties say they support the deal—including 64 percent of all Republicans, and 57 percent of self-identified conservative Republicans. A second poll indicated that 43 percent of Americans are more open to raising taxes on carbon emissions to pay for the deal, compared to 38 percent who opposed the move. At this point, a show vote may inadvertently boost the Democrats McConnell intended to target. After all, they’re only reflecting an attitude that’s surprisingly pervasive—and one the president ignores at his peril.

It has been utterly fascinating to watch what she has been able to do to the political establishment in only a few months.

I dunno. People SAY they’d be willing to pay higher taxes, but when push comes to shove, they’ll vote it down, like WA did with a carbon tax last year (or scream bloody murder when trying to fund mass transit).

The devil is always in the details. How a tax scheme gets implemented is always about the details. Which makes it a hard sell, because most people don’t have anything beyond a rudimentary understanding of how the tax code works (which is also why it’s typically easier to sell tax cuts than more general tax reform - “I’m going to cut your taxes” is easier to understand than “I’m going to adjust the marginal rates and several various deductions in an equitable way”). It will have to come down to how the entire plan is sold and explained in simple terms.

And what would be in that Senate Green New Deal package? Unless it’s the legislation passed by the House, I wouldn’t trust anything that McConnell put together. I already commented on a friend’s FB post, when he repeated the nonsense spewed by thefederalist.com. AOC can’t refute everything all on her own; we need others that can deal with the legions of RW sites.

Another stern test for my opposition to the death penalty:
Children found locked in dog cage, living in deplorable conditions, Wise County deputies say

RHOME, Texas — A father and mother of four children are facing charges after deputies discovered a horrific scene of child abuse and neglect at a home Tuesday morning.

According to Wise County deputies, they received a call at about 7:20 a.m. on a report of domestic violence at a house off County Road 4930 near Newark, about 30 miles north of Fort Worth.

Andrew Fabila and Paige Harkings face four charges of child endangerment, authorities said.

When deputies arrived at the home, they found cuts to the Fabila’s face and heard children inside a barn, according to Sheriff Lane Akin, with the Wise County Sheriff’s Department.

Officials said that when deputies searched the property, they found two children locked in a dog kennel together. Deputies said two other children also showed signs of malnutrition and that food inside the home had been locked up, not reachable by the children. The children were in the age range of one to five years old.

re: #33 The Vicious Babushka

Corwyn tried the same argument…. except….

That’s not how this works.

People are getting less back and the withholding changes meant that the refunds they were expecting aren’t going to show. People are paying more in tax because of the tax scam and the way deductions are computed - it was a shell game and it was identified before the TCJA was enacted. It was identified that it would result in harms to the middle class due to the way the GOP limited deductions all while they protected tax breaks for millionaires (like the deal for aircraft costs/expenses). Millionaires got lower tax rates, but the middle class got their deductions and credits limited.

I’m trying to think if it is boldness, want, drive, not shutting up, working with the power you see unmined, all of that or just parts? Or is it personality and right place and time?

A big part of it, I think, is simply rejecting some of the establishmentarian elements of the system. Normally, someone like AOC would be a back bencher that nobody really paid much attention to for a decade or so. Trump would have been a candidate like Steve Forbes that would have political consultants make him into just another standard issue Republican with one or two “out there ideas”. They both used social media in ways that have forced the establishment to respond to them on their terms rather than on its terms.

In AOC’s case I think it’s boldness and generational, along with the obvious point that she clearly believes in the things that she’s advocating. In Trump’s case, it was timing and luck. They both have a certain authenticity in the sense that they are true to themselves and it shows - they’re not the type that is going to necessarily just say something because it worked well with the latest focus group (Beto has this quality too)

Having been an elementary school teacher working with primarily ESL students (Spanish speaking), they worked hard to learn English. The fact is that it takes 4-7 years to learn the content language that is needed to perform well in school, particularly for those students who have not received education in their native language.

The best way to teach ESL students, and really any student, is through a true bilingual approach. That means that starting in first grade, the students all learn content material in all subjects in two languages. They are immersed one day in one language and then the next in the other language. They learn to think in both languages. Of course, that would never happen in the United States because we don’t believe in truly learning another language.

Bit of an off-topic question for the night crew - has anyone else here had to deal with this year’s variety of the flu bug?

Asking because I usually forego the vaccine because every time I’ve gotten vaccinated I invariably end up catching it anyways, and the times I’ve skipped I’ve avoided being affected. I think that might have been an unwise decision this year. First time in more than a decade I’ve had to deal with fever (peaked yesterday at 102 degrees) - and still no sign of letting up. Feeling like total crap is not at all fun. I can only hope my regiment of bed rest, Nyquil, hydration with orange juice, Gatorade and water along with chicken noodle & hot and sour soup (because even looking at solid food right now makes me queasy) will do the trick eventually.

I did not get my flu shot this year, though my kids did when they were with their dad. Life intruded and I never got it and now I’m hoping that I don’t get the flu!

From what I understand about the flu, it can take 7-14 days for it to run its course. If you catch it within the first day or so, Tamiflu may shorten the course. You are right to stay hydrated. If you have any trouble whatsoever with breathing or your fever continues, please get in to see a doctor right away. The worry is that it could turn into a secondary infection such as pneumonia.

Hope you feel better soon!

I’m pretty resistant to flu, but got it this year. Not much of a fever, but a lot of initial muscle pain and a head full of goo, which dropped into my chest after day two and resulted in a horrible cough and lung congestion. Never got nauseous from the the flu, but the coughing was hard enough that I actually puked a couple of times because of it. Chugged expectorant for a couple of days and it decreased. Cough lasted about a week.

Ick.

re: #67 Sionainn, Warrior Mother

Having been an elementary school teacher working with primarily ESL students (Spanish speaking), they worked hard to learn English. The fact is that it takes 4-7 years learn content language that is needed to perform well in school, particularly for those students who have not received education in their native language.

The best way to teach ESL students, and really any students, is through a true bilingual approach. That means that starting in first grade, the students all learn content material in all subjects in two languages. They are immersed one day in one language and then the next in the other language. They learn to think in both languages. Of course, that would never happen in the United States because we don’t believe in truly learning another language.

My neighborhood school here in Bouldin Creek (Yay, Becker Bobcats!) is a dual language (Spanglish) immersion campus. The program been very successful for both the Spanish and English native speakers. The teachers have been overwhelmed by how much the kids help each other. It is rated as “exemplary” by the State.

The modern update for that movie is an after credits scene where Hatty McDaniel’s Mammy pistol whips Scarlet into unconsciousness as she watches Rhett depart, loads a sack with valuables and fucks off to Canada.

So like I mentioned yesterday I’ve been trying to help my Dad get his reef aquarium running right so he can start putting corals and fishies and suchlike in it and I don’t know if y’all are aware but these goddamned shits are fucking involved.

The biggest hiccup so far has been the protein skimmer. The “expert” who Dad contracted to set up the whole deal and convert his 200 gallon fresh water aquarium, which has been sitting unused for years, to a reef tank just threw the whole mess in before Christmas and then took off for a couple weeks. Then he came back for a day, put in the skimmer, seven blue-green chromis starter fish and took off for Vegas for another week and a half. All the fish were diseased on arrival, got lesions and were dead within ten days, so that was fun.

Then I noticed that the protein skimmer was spitting water everywhere inside the sump cabinet, and we got some mold spots in that fucker. Hurray! I notice that the bubble plate on the skimmer is just floating around and point it out to our “expert” who says that’s normal. He tells me how to adjust the skimmer outflow and admits that he probably set the water level in the sump too high which was causing it to go crazy, overflow and spit water all over the place. But I’m not convinced that the mold is really dealt with so after realizing that I can’t abate this shit with the sump in place we put the project on hold. I shut it the return pump down, remove it, the heater, skimmer, pump the water in the sump into some large garbage cans, scoop out all the sand from the refugium, pull out the drains and filter socks and muscle that fucker out.

Now I can get at all the mold on the wood that the sump was blocking before. I sand it all down, bleach the fuck out of that shit, repeat a couple times just to be sure because I’m from Seattle and have serious trust issues with mold. Then I finally cover everything with several coats of KILZ primer and waterproofing paint.

Now, I think, problem solved. So I put all the stuff back, with some new added handmade gaskets and a silicone flap to deal with the minor splashing and salt creep from the drains. I get it all running and start up the skimmer again, now with the ATO sensors in the sump set at a lower level and setting outflow adjustment on max to keep the bubble column at minimum.

It still goes crazy, not as much as before but it ain’t right. Great.

So now I really get into looking through the nitty gritty of the product documentation, which in my defense sucks ass, and realize that I was right in the beginning, the little acrylic stem that the skimmer’s bubble plate is screwed into is supposed to be glued / locked into the plastic plate of the bubble chamber, but it was cracked and broken from the get go, which is at least partly why the thing couldn’t be dialed in.

So, basically, the point of telling you all that is there’s a non trivial chance that after talking with the “expert” again I’ll be in jail this time tomorrow.

“Catastrophic” hack on email provider destroys almost two decades of data (ArsTechnica)

VFEMail was founded after the ILOVEYOU trojan which hit Windows machines. They based it on Linux so such exploits couldn’t happen.

The entire company has been wiped out by a hacker, including bypassing two-factor authentication.

Email provider VFEmail said it has suffered a catastrophic destruction of all of its servers by an unknown assailant who wiped out almost two decades’ worth of data and backups in a matter of hours.

“Yes, @VFEmail is effectively gone,” VFEmail founder Rick Romero wrote on Twitter Tuesday morning after watching someone methodically reformat hard drives of the service he started in 2001. “It will likely not return. I never thought anyone would care about my labor of love so much that they’d want to completely and thoroughly destroy it.”

Speculation is a state actor, a person with a grudge against the company or its founder, a ransomware attack where the ransom message wasn’t seen, &c. The attack appeared to originate from two IPs associated with Webhosting services in Bulgaria.

We’re expected to get a couple of inches over several days, down here in the corner of the country.

A bit north and much more rain is expected.

I sort of don’t like the throwing the term “river” at these types of storms as they aren’t really all that different than what happens elsewhere. I think the idea of “atmospheric river” was coined to provide a blurb more than anything else.

A standing pattern is not unusual for an atmosphere, we’ve discovered, which has been born out by looking at other planets.

Indeed, during the late hurricane season, you can often find a fixed pattern of upper-level moisture that goes from the east Pacific northeast through Texas - it’s why Texas can get those deluges like what happened last fall.

This rainy season (for us that is July-June type of calendar “year”) will be the first in several years where we might total significantly above the long term (30 year average).

No, my wife and I didn’t have to deal with it because we got our flu shots.

Catching the flu (I suspect “invariably” is hyperbole here) when you’ve had the flu shot means you will have a milder version of it.

Also, like measles, the flu can be spread before the symptoms hit you and after they are over. I hate to sound preachy here, but not getting the shot because (insert reason) is not much different than an antivax position.

Every person who does not get flu shots weakens the point of herd immunity (for those who cannot get shots: the very young, the very old, those who are immnocompromised such as AIDS patients or cancer treatment patients, those allergic to the components of the immunization who can’t get it, &c).

Influenza is not a mild disease. Last season, 80,000 people died from influenza in the USA. That’s not counting all the people hospitalised or sickened by it.
washingtonpost.com
Flu broke records for deaths, illnesses in 2017-2018, new CDC numbers show

Influenza killed about 80,000 people in the 2017-2018 season, according to figures released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The previous high for a regular flu season, based on analyses dating back more than three decades, was 56,000 deaths.

“Last year was just a horrible season,” said Daniel Jernigan, head of the CDC’s influenza division. “It was just a tremendous amount of disease.”

That’s not entirely true. My kids were in a Spainish immersion program where they had no English K-3rd grade, then school was 50/50 Spanish/English 4th and 5th grade. middle school was two classes in Spanish, high school was opt-in. One kid dropped it, the other was taking college junior level Spanish lit by 11th grade. Don Quixote in Spanish, etc.

Your point does stand in general and our area is probably outside the norm, but there are some good immersion schools in this country

I got it, but massively mediated because I got the vaccine. The CDC “guesses” on strain every year, they are sometimes wrong, but even correct, you can still get it, but in a lesser severity if you get vaccinated.

re: #113 goddamnedfrank

Don’t bother with starter fish to get your tank cycling. Sand, rocks, water, salt. In your sump, throw in some extra rocks as bacteria beds. Your skimmer will overflow and act finicky for the first couple of weeks until it breaks in and you learn it’s quirks. Throw a couple of shrimp from the supermarket into the tank and some Seachen Stability. Let it go for a couple of weeks to get the bacteria up and doing their thing. Do a couple of 10% water changes. Monitor nitrate levels, then throw in some fish, assuming your nitrate levels are down to under 40 ppm. Put in fish you want in the tank “starter” fish that are sold are often aggressive bastards, especially blue Damsels.

When you get nitrates under 10 ppm you can start thinking about getting some corals that are hardy. Biggest point. Do. Not. Rush.

Use RO water or bottled or make sure you use something like Prime to get rid of chlorine and chloramine.

Oh, yeah. Your Expert is an asshole. He didn’t give you the information that you need to get going. Sat water aquariums are not hard, but they take knowledge, time, love, and work.

President Donald Trump will put pen to paper on the border-security deal in order to avoid another partial government shutdown, CNN reports. Citing two unnamed sources who the cable network says have spoken directly with the president, Trump will sign the agreement despite saying Tuesday that he was “not happy” about it. The bipartisan pact lawmakers reached Monday night includes just $1.375 billion for about 50 miles of fencing along Texas’ border with Mexico—Trump wanted more than $5 billion for his pet project. To avoid another shutdown, Congress faces a deadline to get a deal passed and signed by Trump before Friday.

It may mark the end of the Girl Scouts. Or not; time will tell. It bothers me that BSA did not think to discuss this with the Girl Scouts before it made its decision.

The BSA is trying to save themselves from bankruptcy over all the sexual assault allegations.

The BSA is still not an inclusive organisation by any stretch: the one girl troop is “separate but equal,” they still don’t permit atheists and will toss them if found, &c.

It’s the BSA in danger of collapsing, not the GSA. Membership in the BSA continues to decline; many of its troops are specifically associated with churches, &c.

Really, I’m going to guess that Donny thinks he has some “cunning plan” worked out that will allow him to get his wall money without going through Congress, as the most important thing in his mind is just getting the first section built. Once he’s got that, he figures he’ll work it like all his past cons: “Now that we’ve started work, we can’t stop because the money spent now will have been ‘wasted’!”

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Trumpworld continues taking potshots at Rep. Omar, suggesting that she should resign, or be stripped of committee assignments.

Nice double standard you have there. Be a shame if the GOP were held to the same standard.

We also get word of a tentative deal on building a segment of wall. It’s supposedly $1.375 billion for a wall, which is far less than the $5.7 billion he was demanding during the shutdown, and less than the compromise deal that Trump scuttled immediately preceding the shutdown.

In other words, Trump sucks at negotiating. He’s not even a great extortionist. He’s a saboteur, who damaged government and got nothing in return. He got less than what he would have had in December.

It’s little wonder the Fox white nationalists are annoyed. Fuck them.

And fuck Trump for thinking that this wall does anything but waste resources.

At the same time, Trump’s allegedly trying to loot funding meant for disaster relief in Puerto Rico and California to pay for more of the wall.

Congress should slam him for that - Congress has appropriations power under the Constitution and Trump can’t deviate from that by taking funds meant for other purposes. It’s even in the GOP interest in Congress, because any precedent of this kind of executive overreach could be used by Democrats to do things that a Democratic president might want - like a Green New Deal or infrastructure investment by shifting defense funding on national security grounds, etc.

There’s a reason that appropriations should be a hard line on overreach - it’s in the Constitution and the plain language of the text demands it. But as we repeatedly see with this GOP, they couldn’t care about the law.

I’ve never been to NM, and now I reckon I should pay it a visit. Some of the scenery reminded me of Wyoming and Colorado, where I have visited and lived. Chuck Schumer is actively recruiting a high-profile fighter pilot to take on Mitch McConnell in 2020 — a calculated act of aggression against a leading Republican foe.

Schumer met with Amy McGrath, a Marine veteran-turned 2018 congressional candidate, at Democratic Party headquarters last month to pitch her on running against McConnell. McGrath listened and didn’t rule it out. The Democratic leader first contacted McGrath in December.

This is where I could see a “cold civil war” for decades in this country. If SCOTUS fails to protect the Federal unity, things could unravel. The rural areas of the South will slide further back to the brutal poverty of the 1930s and they will do so quite happily. The Plains states will continue to empty out and become the ghost states of the nation and the few big local landholders will be happy about that. Hopefully the need for labor in the growing Blue states provide an outlet for emigration from the backward states. Urban gems like Atlanta Charlotte Nashville etc find ways to affiliate with progressive states. Of course the troglodytes will continue to attempt to constrain them as they do now. I hope the corporatists on SCOTUS think about their business overlords and for that reason refuse this direction. “The purpose of the Republican Party is not to serve the petty designs of the conservative mind, but to manipulate and exploit the petty designs for the financial benefit of the wealthy”. At some time, the center cannot hold and that is bad for business.

Here’s a few more notes from that Gallup study:

- Sixty-two percent of those under 30 say they are better off; 25% say worse off.
- Forty-five percent of women say they are better off; 29% say worse off.
- Forty-five percent of those with annual household incomes of less than $40,000 say better off, 35% worse off.
- Among liberals, 40% say better off, 31% worse off.

But it’s such a subjective question. You’re not going off hard, quantifiable date, you’re just asking people what they think.

I wonder how many people are just saying better off because they don’t want to admit the truth.

Also of note: Most economists are going total WTF? about these numbers.

Can artificial intelligence prevent the next Parkland shooting?

Schools are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence-backed solutions to stop tragic acts of student violence such as the shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, a year ago.

Bark Technologies, gaggle.net, and Securly Inc. are three companies that employ AI and machine learning to scan student emails, texts, documents, and in some cases, social media activity. They look for warning signs of cyber bullying, sexting, drug and alcohol use, depression, and to flag students who may pose a violent risk not only to themselves, but classmates.

When potential problems are found, and depending on the severity, school administrators, parents — and under the most extreme cases — law enforcement officials, are alerted.

In the fall of 2017, Bark ran a test pilot with 25 schools. “We found some pretty alarming issues, including a bombing and school shooting threat,” says Bark chief parent officer, Titania Jordan.

Honestly, if there had been a system like this back when I was 13, it probably would have flagged a lot of my stuff too. I was bullied to the point of being suicidal. I wrote a lot about things that were going on and yes, expressed some desire to commit violence against those who were hurting me. I never did it though because 1) I understood the difference between WRITING about violence and actually committing it and 2) I DIDN’T HAVE EASY ACCESS TO GUNS!

It’s like companies are willing to come up with all this insane bullshit in the name of “safety” just so we as a society can feel better that something is being done while still gleefully ignoring the elephant in the room.

Six police officers in California fatally shot a 21-year-old rapper, saying he had a handgun in his lap and made a sudden movement after they found him sleeping in his car outside of a local Taco Bell, authorities said.

Officials in Vallejo told the San Francisco Chronicle that police discovered the local artist, identified as Willie McCoy or “Willie Bo,” sleeping in a drive-through lane with a handgun in his lap over the weekend.

Police were reportedly called to the restaurant late Saturday after an employee said he found a driver slumped over in his car.

Police said in a statement to the local paper that they initially found McCoy unresponsive with the handgun in his lap and that he suddenly moved at one point as they were examining him.

Officials said they told McCoy to keep his hands visible, but when he allegedly reached for his weapon, they discharged their weapons “in fear for their own safety.”

He allegedly had a gun in his lap and was slumped over sleeping. He woke and supposedly made a move for the gun when he was shot.

So much about this doesn’t pass the smell test.

From Gallup’s summary of the poll:

Yet for all of the heightened positivity about the U.S. economy, Americans remain entrenched in their negativity about the country in general, with just 29% saying they are satisfied with the way things are going nationally; 69% are dissatisfied. Partisans’ opinions on this measure diverge sharply: 51% of Republicans, 27% of independents and 10% of Democrats are satisfied.

But something else jumped out at me, looking at the actual numbers, only 50% of respondents were employed full time (9% were employed part time), 23% were retired. That seems high.

A proposal that Democrats could make as a way to spend money that would actually reduce crime instead of wasting it on Trump’s vanity project is to hire more cops. It polls well, including with African-Americans (whose neighborhoods are paradoxically both over and under policed) and it creates unionized, blue collar jobs with decent wages and benefits. The hiring should of course be diverse with lots of African-Americans and women, and they should be well-trained. Cops mere presence without engaging in aggressive tactics like stop-and-frisk deters crime, and cops who aren’t overworked are less likely to behave badly.

Fleeing Waterville bank robber slips, spills money, gun in front of special agent, police say (Goes to Central Maine dot Com)

He ran across four lanes of traffic on Main Street and into the Ming Lee restaurant parking lot, slipped on the ice and found himself face-to-face with a special agent for the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Task Force who just happened to be parked in the right place at the right time.

“When he fell, the money and the gun he had stashed in his jacket pocket spilled onto the parking lot, and the money was swept across the parking lot by the wind,” police Chief Joseph Massey said later. “Members of the public tried to scoop it up.”

re: #36 lawhawk

Corwyn tried the same argument…. except….

That’s not how this works.

People are getting less back and the withholding changes meant that the refunds they were expecting aren’t going to show. People are paying more in tax because of the tax scam and the way deductions are computed - it was a shell game and it was identified before the TCJA was enacted. It was identified that it would result in harms to the middle class due to the way the GOP limited deductions all while they protected tax breaks for millionaires (like the deal for aircraft costs/expenses). Millionaires got lower tax rates, but the middle class got their deductions and credits limited.

just keep saying over and over the important line for comparison to last year is Line 15 (total tax) NOT 19 (ovepaid/refund)

line 15 is your tax bill. you know what a bill or an invoice is, right?
line 19 is merely whether you paid the bill, or worse, more than the bill, in advance

I refuse to let this be the America that any other generation has to grow up in.

I heard some guys that are just ex-athletes yakking on radio, probably in their early 30s or so, the other day and one of them brought up his young daughter came home and told him and his wife they practiced “lockdown” at school.

That broke into a conversation about how when younger they used to practice fire drills. Another said at their school his kids have four lockdown practices a year and only two fire/evacuation drills.

What struck me was this was sports radio talk and they spent a good 10 minutes talking about how messed up that all is.

Maybe we are finally getting to the stage where enough people are realizing how stupid it is that everyone has to protect themselves from something they never had to do before. And why…because guns are more important than people.

Fuck that.

I also heard there was more school shootings in America last year than ever. So, it is not getting better no matter the “protections” they try to install.

I hope David Hogg and the Parkland students keep on it. I hope to see some of them running for office in the future.

We always told the kids they were getting shots, and we also told them that it will sting a little bit. The first couple of times, it would take a little extra time to get the shot, but it got easier. We’d also generally plan it so they could pick where to go to lunch after.

There was no record of me having a polio vaccine when I was in the Navy. (My mother insists I got it but the medical record didn’t show that.)

Updating the totals:

The Archdiocese of Newark released a list Wednesday of 63 Roman Catholic clergy members that it said have been credibly accused of sexually abusing minors dating back to 1940. Paterson soon followed suit with a list including 28.

The Archdiocese of Metuchen released a list that included 10 priests and 1 permanent deacon.

We’re over 100 members of the clergy. Two of the NJ diocese haven’t released the list, and the list doesn’t include names of those currently involved in lawsuits.

UPDATE:

Make that 188 members of the clergy (priests and deacons).

There are 188 names on the lists from the five dioceses. They include 63 priests and deacons accused in the Archdiocese of Newark, 56 in the Diocese of Camden, 28 in the Diocese of Paterson, 30 in the Diocese of Trenton and 11 in the Diocese of Metuchen.

A $50k golf simulator is cheaper than Trump jetting off to one of his business resorts where he profits from every trip and bills taxpayers for all his flights.

I get the feeling golf is now the only fun Trump has anymore. And if he keeps banging on those little balls and things around him continue to crash and burn golf will no longer calm him from the pressures.

It is an addiction he is using to cover the fact he is a mess.

Beware the smart devices (h/t Engadget)

You’d expect voice assistants to collect data whenever you control a smart home device — that’s how they work. Amazon and Google have lately been asking for a continuous flow of data in the name of convenience, however, and those device makers aren’t always happy. Bloomberg has learned that Logitech and other hardware makers (some speaking anonymously) have objected to these requests for a steady stream of information over concerns they could violate privacy. Logitech has purposefully provided generic information rather than talking about individual devices, while others have reportedly asked for privacy “concessions” and have been rejected.

The companies say they need this information for the sake of faster response to voice commands as well as ensuing that smart displays have up to date information. It might be difficult to avoid sending at least some continuous information. However, there are concerns the constant supply of data could be used to piece together your habits — when you leave for work, watch TV and go to bed. That’s potentially valuable for marketing and customer research.

Entertaining…but why is everyone using “fucking” and not more “fuck” or “fucker” usage. I thought the tweet said use an “F-bomb” in a movie line. Then the person used “fucking” and everyone went with that.

Let’s see some “fuck” examples.

“Fuck, they’re here!”

“Go ahead, make my day fucker.”

And the other shame is that hardly anybody seems to realise “fucking” is not just an adjective. I can’t find the tweet any more (not quickly anyway) but as far as I’m concerned the thread was won about half an hour in by the guy who came up with “-Luke, I’m fucking your father. - Noooooooooooooo!”.

I got the same vaccine about a year ago. No particular bad effects. (It’s produced in chick embryos, so many people do have bad reactions).

Stone’s alleging that Mueller gave a sealed indictment re: Stone to CNN.

These people are off their rockers. Considering everything else Mueller has or hasn’t done - there’s no way that a team that has been leak-free in so many other aspects of the case would leak anything to CNN.

These fuckers can’t get past fact that CNN was following what was going on in EDVA and recognized that Stone was going to be indicted and therefore had a news team waiting.

Same way that any news outfit could spend the resources to tail Junior and Kushner to be there when those two get indicted (and Junior thinks he’s going to be indicted “any day now”).

It’s pretty obvious this diary writer doesn’t like AIPAC, but he makes a note of a few things related to Omar, namely that not only is her criticism unwanted by some, but her and Rep. Tlaib’s existences is unwanted by Saudi Arabia. But there’s a mention in his diary of an earlier diary where McCarthy goes after Omar before her tweet, saying she needs to go because her criticism is as bad or worse than Steve King’s white supremacy.

SRSLY: Kevin’s probably where he is only because it was his “turn”. I realize that the GOP in the House in the 116th Congress, being the Minority, don’t have all that much power - thanks to House rules they put through, and were only too ready to take advantage of when they were the Majority - but McCarthy and Scalise are definitely the “B Team”. I mean, Paul Ryan was also a thorough “B-Teamer”, but (disgracefully) got pumped up by the GOP and the media as this Great Legislative Genius; years of FAIL notwithstanding.
But then again, it’s the House Republicans: the Stupid And Crazy have a sort of veto power over the Sane And Capable: mediocrities like McCarthy are probably the best they can do.

Fun fact: Jesus didn’t force people to follow him. He simply told them who he was and what he was about and let THEM make up their minds.

I think he is quoted as saying some people were sheep and others were goats and the goats were going to be punished good. I think he’s also quoted as saying that if you don’t accept him you will burn in hell forever. So there is a clear threat issued there, for the record. “Ya don’t have to join my group just let me tell you what happens if’n you don’t “

Can artificial intelligence prevent the next Parkland shooting?

Why not existing human intelligence? That seems to work in other parts of the world.

This story is just so frustrating to me. It just seems to me like another example of too many privileged US folks putting off the realisation that they’re going to have to get their hands dirty, and deal with this gun violence problem in a personal capacity.

There’s a reason why I say this. As far as I can see, gun violence in the US has got to the point where, without any progress on that front, this issue is going to personally affect the sort of people I’m taking about, and in the near future, if it hasn’t already happened . And I suspect many of them are aware of this, and are in denial about the obvious implications.

Hence, guff in the media, like this story about pie-in-the-sky technological “solutions” to problems which only exist due to political and mental impasse, which defer actual action in favour of empty gestures which usually target anyone but the actual perpetrator. In short, ignoring the elephant in the room.
