I had the great pleasure of catching the Grateful Dead many times when Bruce Hornsby was their keyboardist, and boy did he rock the house! Before that, I thought of him as a new age/lounge musician. But he’s really a badass soul organist ala Booker T. Jones. Musicians are funny creatures.

So yesterday was an Audubon tetrafecta in the backyard for tufted songbirds. Bluejays, Cardinals, Tufted Titmice, and a winter visitor, Cedar Waxwings stripping a wax leaf ligustrum.

Also, the first Robin of the season. That Robin appeared to be a scout, because today the backyard today was filthy with them. I’ve always thought of them as paired-up travelers, but no. That were dining on winter fruiting bushes, and at one point a Cooper’s Hawk flew over and I swear to god seventy of them flashed out and fled south.

Finally, twenty minutes ago, a Barred Owl started hooting. Spring is here, unless the bird’s migratory patterns have been completely fucked up by climate change. Hummers should be showing up in the next two or three weeks.

And bats. Millions of bats.

I have some sympathy for the difficulty in responding when you are asked certain yes or no questions; for example, “Have you stopped beating your wife?” Situations are often more complex than an apparently straightforward question allows. That said, Kirstjen Nielsen really does present herself as someone who would have been quite comfortable in working under Vidkun Quisling, the traitor who ran Norway under the Nazis.

Republican members of the New Hampshire House of Representatives are facing backlash for their decision to wear pearls during a hearing on gun control legislation sparking accusations that they were being sexist and using the “clutching their pearls” imagery to mock the testimony of mothers of gun violence victims.

The controversy erupted Tuesday afternoon during debate over a bill that would restrict access to firearms from people deemed to pose an “immediate risk to themselves or others.”

The measure, known as House Bill 687-FN, would allow authorities and family members to obtain court orders that would restrict access to guns for potentially dangerous people.

It would take an emergency airdrop of drunken Scots to come up with enough nasty names to call these….creatures.

A 42-year-old Columbia, Missouri, man has been charged with trying to burn down a local Planned Parenthood clinic last month, federal prosecutors said Monday.

Wesley Brian Kaster was arrested Saturday after investigators searched his vehicle and found evidence linking him to the fire at the Planned Parenthood-Columbia Health Center. No one was hurt in the attack, which happened in the pre-dawn hours when the building was empty.

Kaster faces a preliminary charge of using fire or an explosive to maliciously damage a building that receives federal funding, but that could change. The FBI had said it was investigating the attack as a possible hate crime.

I hate to say it, but I think we’re going to see more of this sort of thing in the not-too-distant future, and all the more likely if Trump and the GOP end up getting wiped out in an electoral fiasco next November.

Nielsen knew that the question was coming about who was in custody, the number of children separated, and what happened to those children, and whether all those children were reunited with their parents.

She blew the answers in the worst way, and the reality is that Trump and Nielsen broke multiple laws and court orders in the process. Her resignation should be demanded, followed by Trump’s given the nature of the crime. Arguably DHS policy is to engage in human trafficking.

Where are the 471 children and why aren’t they being reunited with their parents.

If anyone is not reunited with their parents after this debacle, and we learn instead that they were shuffled through into foster care via Bethany Christian Services (which has ties to DeVos), there should be hell to pay and then some. There’s so much self dealing and personal aggrandizement in Trumpworld that it should shock people to the core, except it’s so widespread that far too many have become numb to it all.

Which Democrats are worried that going after Trump’s spawn for crimes they committed will blow back? Who is making this case?

“Getting to family members I think is dangerous,” said Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.), a senior member of the House Oversight and Reform Committee. “Only because it gets real personal, real fast. And it risks backfiring.

“Maybe at some point we have to call them in,” Connolly added, “but I’d rather let prosecutors look at that.”

Prosecutors are already looking at that. The Manhattan DA had a fraud case against Ivanka and Jared that got dropped after a money man donated to Vance’s campaign and the case dropped. Money talks, and all this bulkshit just walks. The family isn’t insulated because they’re kids. These are all adults who are in positions of power for no other reason than nepotism. They’re engaging in criminal acts because of their positions and furthering ongoing criminality.

What’s the concern here, that people will be sympathetic to Junior or Ivanka or Jared? Why? They’re up to their eyeballs in wrongdoing and they’re all lawyered up already knowing that indictments are in their future. Congress has every right to investigate the family further - doing the work that the GOP refused to do.

Are they worried that the GOP might do this down the road? Go for it. The GOP has already blown through comity and the rule of law only applies to Democrats and when Democrats are in office, not to GOPers who are openly flouting multiple laws at the state and federal level.

The GOPers are claiming that this is overreach, which is total bullshit given what we already know of Trump’s campaign operations, where everyone associated is either already indicted, about to get sentenced (Manafort), in a plea deal (Flynn, Cohen, Papadopoulos, Gates), or expects to be indicted.

The GOP line is witch hunt. Democrats shouldn’t worry about what the GOP will think here. Fuck their feelings. The rule of law trumps their feelings.

What political blowback will there be here? The GOP will do what exactly? They’ve already shown that they don’t care about the rule of law or the constitution - see how McConnell manipulated the judicial picks and blocked Obama’s picks all while speeding Trump picks through in record fashion.

When I was 21 my bipolar father went into a paranoid delusional manic episode. There were guns in the house. When I went in to remove them I got a loaded gun pointed at my chest by a raging madman. Luckily, I had spent my life talking him down and knew how to get the gun away from him without anyone getting shot.

Had this law existed I’d have gotten every gun out of that house months, years before. But he was undiagnosed for years and refused to take his meds when he was. He was fucking dangerous.

This is a story I don’t share much in the “real world” for obvious reasons. But I have a really close friend who is a gun owner, big 2nd amendment guy, who I told over too many beers one night. The GOP play here is to do what? Force Democrats to vote on something that’s needed? The GOP couldn’t even put together a health care plan. Prosecutors are already looking at that. The Manhattan DA had a fraud case against Ivanka and Jared that got dropped after a money man donated to Vance’s campaign and the case dropped. Money talks, and all this bulkshit just walks. The family isn’t insulated because they’re kids. These are all adults who are in positions of power for no other reason than nepotism. They’re engaging in criminal acts because of their positions and furthering ongoing criminality.

What’s the concern here, that people will be sympathetic to Junior or Ivanka or Jared? Why? They’re up to their eyeballs in wrongdoing and they’re all lawyered up already knowing that indictments are in their future. Congress has every right to investigate the family further - doing the work that the GOP refused to do.

Are they worried that the GOP might do this down the road? Go for it. The GOP has already blown through comity and the rule of law only applies to Democrats and when Democrats are in office, not to GOPers who are openly flouting multiple laws at the state and federal level.

The GOPers are claiming that this is overreach, which is total bullshit given what we already know of Trump’s campaign operations, where everyone associated is either already indicted, about to get sentenced (Manafort), in a plea deal (Flynn, Cohen, Papadopoulos, Gates), or expects to be indicted.

The GOP line is witch hunt. Democrats shouldn’t worry about what the GOP will think here. Fuck their feelings. The rule of law trumps their feelings.

What political blowback will there be here? The GOP will do what exactly? They’ve already shown that they don’t care about the rule of law or the constitution - see how McConnell manipulated the judicial picks and blocked Obama’s picks all while speeding Trump picks through in record fashion.

With all respect to my former Congressman, the kids became fair game when he put them tin his administration. No one is investigating Tiffany or Barron but Ivanka and the boys and Jared. Yes.

I do think Bibi is awful for Israel and a lot of that comes from how he acts. It’s the being more hospitable to the American far right than its President. The way he treated Obama, I will never forgive Bibi for. Showing Glenn Beck more deference than Obama was disgusting. But there’s also the double standards as I said.

As a gentile of Eastern European descent, I’m definitely aware that Poland and other countries in the former Soviet bloc have awful histories of Anti-Semitism. My college term paper was on Anti-Semitism in Russia in the reigns of Alexander III and Nicholas II FWIW. But where Bibi really completely loses me is when he and his government attack Poland for its history while still partnering with Hungary whose history is probably even worse.

I also think Bibi plays a dangerous game by being more friendly towards American Christian Right members than American Jews as well. One of my earliest political memories was when Prime Minister Rabin was assassinated. I was young and had no idea who he was but I knew it was a sad moment. The issue to me in the end isn’t Israel, it’s Israeli policy. Just as the issue isn’t America with Trump, it’s Trump and our policies.

TBH I wish another Republican was running against Trump. Weld hasn’t been elected as a Republican in years. This really would be the equivalent of a conservative Dem who last served in office in the 80’s primarying Obama. I think Weld who does have the money and willingness will go after Trump but I think its impact will be minimal. That’s really not his fault but more an indictment of just how far the GOP base has moved to the right since he was Massachusetts’ governor.

This is nothing new. But with the huge split in politics today it seems so drastic to see an conservative opinion in The Times or WaPo.

When I was much younger and reading papers a lot, the contrasts between the parties were not so damn extreme and overworked. It was actually informative to read both sides opinions. Now? It’s fucking nuts.

Whether or not you support it, the fact is that the US government should not be going after companies or people for supporting it, or as above, requiring people or companies to submit to opposing it to operate.

Yeah I adamantly disagree with the BDS movement but companies should not be punished for having that policy on our soil. And that reaction I think is really what fuels a lot of frustration. That American citizens are punished for opposing a foreign country’s actions.

I don’t want to poke a hornets nest, but could some of the Jewish contributors clear something up for me. I have what must be a historic misunderstanding.

Has any criticism of the government, politicians and policy of Israel always been tied to the Jewish people’s race and religion so as to be considered antisemitism?

I always separated the two. And if this is the new norm, when did this start or has it always been like this and I just never saw and understood it?

To me this all seems somewhat recent as with all crazy politics of the late 20th century now into the new.

Is it the politics that has tied the two together to eliminate criticisms or what is the reason? I don’t see any government as untouchable from criticism. But at times there seems to be an untouchable element to Israel the political entity.

And it sure is being used as a hammer these days.

I wonder if this attitude is more an American way of thinking for both American political and religious interests?

The problem there is not just a matter of effective language, but whose language gets amplified. We can wordsmith all we want, and we’ll still lose out on the message wars most times because not only does the GOP have its own pet propaganda network, but other outlets continue to decide that the GOP has the monopoly on truth, or at the very least ‘insight’. Thus GOP characterizations never get initial pushback, while Dem narratives are questioned constantly, even when proven right.

And then on a political level I’d roll out my favorite the Preamble to the US Constitution.

We don’t need the Chicago Tribune’s lazy editorials that we can’t afford the GND — that we should promote small measures that basically have no cost in order to fight the greatest danger to our life (maybe second greatest to all-out nuclear war) that we are facing.

The discovery phase of this would be a mess. Trump will claim he didn’t have adequate/competent legal representation, and Cohen will rebut with evidence he did, and that these were legitimate expenses.

As we’ve known all along Trump hates to pay his vendors. He’s stiffed his lawyers too - refusing to pay them even when he admits that they did a good job for him.

That’s one of the reasons Trump had such a hard time finding anyone to represent his sorry corrupt ass in all these investigations.

Hemmingway doesn’t bother to note that she’s a paid hack for… Fox. She then tries to play it off as though everyone knows. That’s besides the point. She’s required to note the potential conflict of interests. But what do you expect from an amoral cesspool like Fox?

In fact, Hemingway — who also works as an editor for The Federalist, a conservative opinion site started by serial plagiarist Ben Domenech — doubled down by mocking a Vox writer who noted the Fox News contributor’s failure to disclose her obvious conflict of interest.

“Dang it!! I was trying to keep it a secret, made more difficult by appearing on Fox News most nights,” Hemingway tweeted, before mockingly adding, “Such as tonight, on Special Report at 6 pm.”

538 proposed re-ordering the democratic Presidential primary calendar since Iowa and NH are extremely white states which don’t really reflect the Democratic coalition. The problem is that the top four states, Ill, NJ, NY and Fl, are all big states that are expensive to run in, so they don’t offer the opportunity to engage in retail politicking to give a candidate the opportunity to show their appeal without already having a lot of money. So I would suggest that the season kick off with two smaller states that are diverse: Nevada (because almost everyone in Nv lives in Vegas) and Delaware.

One thing I am considering is who Cohen is and what he was as a lawyer.

I’m thinking we have a lawyer that was hired as a bully and was pretty good at it and that is why Trump kept him around.

He hasn’t changed character, just now he is a pissed off bully lawyer that has decided he is going to go after his former client in the same nasty bully lawyer way.

If - and that’s a big “if” - Trump has any sort of decent legal counsel currently, they’ll tell him to pay Cohen in full and make it go away because discovery could open a can of worms that (from Trump’s POV) he really doesn’t opened.

Been noticing for the past couple of days similar promoted tweets in my Twitter feed from the Scottish outlet of the UK government: all promoting the message that Scotland would do better as part of the UK than part of the EU.

The irony is in taking this position the UK government is re-inforcing the idea that Scotland has to choose between the UK and EU, when the past two referendum results have already shown what Scotland prefers.
