This week, Jane Mayer reminded us that the White House and Fox News are married in a way that is both damning and deeply weird.
Been noticing for the past couple of days similar promoted tweets in my Twitter feed from the Scottish outlet of the UK government: all promoting the message that Scotland would do better as part of the UK than part of the EU.
Another reminder: for a lot of voters in Scotland, the vote to remain in UK in 2014 was _also_ a vote to remain in the EU. That’s clearly a different situation from now, and will be more so after April 2019.

The irony is: in taking this position the UK government is re-inforcing the idea that Scotland has to choose between the UK and EU, when the past two referendum results have already shown what Scotland prefers.

The original referendum was due to Cameron’s mistaken confidence that it would fail; it is possible that the result could be the same this time. But could that be worse than the disaster that the UK is facing now? It’s a shame that the Labour Party is led by an anti-Semite and true believer in old-style obsolete programs who will do as much, if not more, damage than Theresa.
At least, for now, unless Bernie or Tulsi becomes the Democratic nominee, we are fortunate here that the Democratic Party leadership is sane and competent.

Even earlier than that. The Brits wanted all the benefits of the EEC (which became the EC/EU) and none of the harms - particularly on what they perceived was decreased sovereignty.
They essentially wanted to be free riders and the EEC/EU didn’t play by that.
Now, the Brits are hoping to get preferential treatment even though they’re the ones taking a hike and will see no benefits. Businesses operating there will see reduced market opportunities outside the UK as trade barriers will be much higher, and so called new trade deal with the US is vaporware by Trump.
The only one benefiting from the Brexit is the Russians. They are watching chaos overspread all their rivals.
In the last thread, someone asked how the insurance company paid Trump $17M for storm damage. The AP did a story about this, and talked to the insurance adjuster. He didn’t really say much:
The insurance adjustor who assessed the insurance claim, Hank Stein of VeriClaim Inc., said there had been damage to Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach and damage to Mar-a-Lago’s roof and landscaping. Stein called his review “a thorough investigation” but could not remember details. Trump declined to provide the AP with records about the insurance claim or answer specific questions about damage at Mar-a-Lago.
Stein, who has since left VeriClaim for another firm, said he remembered water damage from rain after windows to an observation deck atop the mansion blew open. “I wish I could give you some more information on the breakdown,” he said.

Unfortunately, from everything I’ve read about the Brexit mess, the pro/anti, Leave/Remain split in British politics (which is(?was?) pretty much a 50-50 thing) cuts right across the political spectrum, there being Leavers and Remainers in both major parties: with, however, the Leave gang ending up in charge (May & Co.) determined to carry it through regardless of consequences, and regardless of Parliamentary opposition (as far as they can get away with it).

I was married to a Scotswoman. Her parents were from Northern England, but her dad is of Scottish descent (clan Gordon) and she was born in Stirling (site of the famous battle featured in Braveheart) and went to school in Glasgow.
I even own a proper kilt that I bought for family weddings. It has no clan affiliation, so to speak, the tartan is that of the Reith Rovers football club. I like the colors, red, white, blue and black.

MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson seemed a tad displeased when interviewing Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill) earlier today when it didn’t seem to go as Jackson planned.
Jackson was primed to drill down into Schakowsky’s call to fellow Democrats to “stop tweeting” during what Jackson labeled a “feisty” Democratic caucus debate over the wording of a new anti-hate resolution.
But Schakowsky brilliantly flipped the script and adamantly blamed the media, the GOP and the “Hatemonger-In-Chief” for unfairly targeting Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn) and putting her life in danger.
Hallie Jackson was not pleased.
Jan Schakowsky went on to rightly criticize the media for “exploiting” “sexy” conflicts within the Democratic Party yet ignoring the fact that House Dems just passed two Gun Safety bills for the first time in 25 years and are poised to pass a Fair Elections bill.
This was the moment when Jackson cut her off and pushed Schakowsky on the “disagreements” among members of her caucus.
In the opinion of this writer who watched it live, Hallie Jackson’s agenda was clear: magnify the “deep split” within the Democratic party.
But Jan Schakowsky was not having it.
She explained her “stop tweeting” comment was a call to fellow Dems to stop discussing complex issues on social media because it only serves to give the media and republicans ammo for dividing the Democratic party.
Then Schakowsky went on to criticize the media and republicans yet a third time for “blowing up” Omar’s comments, and the resulting D-party debate, into a far bigger issue than it is — to the point that Schakowsky believes Omar now needs extra security.
Schakowsky, who made it clear she is Jewish, said she was “not trivializing” anti-Semitism and was quick to point out that Islamophobia is also a huge problem that needs to be addressed by Democratic House majority.
Schakowsky said she has accepted Omar’s personal apology to her and this has been a “learning moment” for everyone in the D-caucus on “how to get along.”
By the time this tête-à-tête wrapped up, Hallie Jackson had her arms clamped tightly crossed over her chest - a physical quirk we’ve seen in the “Hatemonger-In-Chief,” as Rep. Jan Schakowsky labelled the White House occupant.

I think you will see more. They are just starting to get into their groove.
Add in all the investigations and Democrats ignoring the complaints of GOP congress members about it all and I think we are seeing the Democrats getting to the don’t give a fuck anymore stage.
I bet it really ramps up this summer as presidential campaigns start up. I think that too will be coordinated with the investigations to get a control on the national message all through the 2020 election.
The press can come along, but I don’t think the Democrats are relying on that as they learned how the press handled the last election and Trump.
In a way they are being bold and loud about it in a manner similar to how loud Trump was.
I think they are out to make the news and set the story and they will go public in as many ways to get it out and drive the media to report it rather than color it. Again Trump dominated the media by going over and around them with his tweets.

My take on the death penalty used to be that there were some crime so heinous, some murderers so dangerous, and some guilt so incontrovertible that their continued existence on this planet constituted an unacceptable risk - can you guarantee that they’d NEVER be able to get out?
I’ve never been much of one for the revenge or deterrence arguments and I have also never had a problem with the long appeals process - if we’re gonna kill somebody, we should exhaust all possibility of being wrong.
Two things changed my mind and made me oppose it:
1) the difficulty of writing what I listed (heinous crime, dangerous killer, certainty of guilt) into a law - especially the certainty part.
2) the number of people convicted and sentenced to death (and some executed) who were later completely exonerated. Not just “Oh, there was a problem with the trial”, but “Somebody else did it”.
As an aside, I was also alarmed when I heard from some DP advocates that they felt that even if someone convicted and sentenced to death were innocent of THAT murder, they probably had done something to deserve it, because “You don’t get that deep into the criminal justice system (as a defendant) without being guilty of SOMETHING!” which struck me as very much the opposite of ‘small government with limited powers, citizenry with broad, inalienable rights’ Conservatism they claimed to espouse.

Yep. Same judge who accused one of the prosecutors of crying in court. The same senile old fuck of a judge who explicitly gave permission for an IRS agent witness to remain in court while other witnesses were testifying and then forgot that he’d done that and berated the prosectors so badly over his own error that he had to apologize the next day.
On Wednesday, Ellis got upset at prosecutors when they put IRS audit agent Michael Welch on the stand and he said he’d been in the courtroom during other witnesses’ testimony.
“I thought we excluded witnesses,” Ellis said, halting the testimony. The jury was still in the courtroom. Asonye said that was true, except for expert witnesses, which included Welch, and case agents involved in the investigation. Ellis said prosecutors “need to ask specifically,” and he told Asonye to remember that next time.
Asonye said he would check the transcript, but believed they had asked the judge for permission. Ellis erupted.
“Let me be clear: I don’t care what the transcript says. Maybe I made a mistake. But I want you to remember don’t do that again. When I exclude witnesses, I mean everybody,” he said.
On Thursday morning, prosecutors filed a motion — the first of its kind in the trial so far — asking the judge for a “curative instruction” to the jury about what happened the previous day. They attached a copy of the transcript from the first day of the trial, July 31, showing they had asked Ellis to allow Welch to stay in the courtroom. At the time, according to the transcript, the judge asked who the agent was, and the government provided his name. The judge said, “All right.”
“The Court’s reprimand of government counsel suggested to the jury — incorrectly — that the government had acted improperly and in contravention of Court rules,” prosecutors argued in the filing. “This prejudice should be cured.”
“Let me be clear, I don’t care what specific instructions I gave before, you should have known I’m a stupid old fucking sundowning fool and anticipated that I didn’t really mean it.”

A silver lining (I hope) this short sentence puts paid to any talk of a pardon. It’s better just to serve the four years than pay extra money hoping for a pardon.

About impeachment: regardless of outcome, impeachment ends the process. And a failed impeachment ends even the Congressional oversight function. Better to avoid the topic and continue to dig, dig, dig. Work hard everyday and make the case. And remember: Cohen is going to jail. Manafort is going to jail. Not as long as we would like, but they are going, and both will be broke afterwards and for the rest of their lives.
And we haven’t even counted the state charges, and other charges may come up as a result of the investigations by Congress, Mueller, and State Attorneys General. And Manafort has already lost $46 million in assets, and will probably have to turn over any remaining to his soon to be ex-wife. (Guys like that usually end up divorced while in prison)

Conservative congressman opposes medicare expansion because Jesus teaches that poor people don’t really want health care.
Rep. Roger Marshall, (R-KS) uses Jesus to justify his opposition to Obamacare by explaining that poor people will reject health care, just like Jesus said.
In a recent interview with STAT News, the conservative Christian lawmaker explained why he believes some poor people just don’t want health care:
Just like Jesus said, ‘The poor will always be with us.’ There is a group of people that just don’t want health care and aren’t going to take care of themselves.
Just, like, homeless people … I think just morally, spiritually, socially, [some people] just don’t want health care. The Medicaid population, which is [on] a free credit card, as a group, do probably the least preventive medicine and taking care of themselves and eating healthy and exercising. And I’m not judging, I’m just saying socially that’s where they are. James Ramsey-Guy was following an order when he turned off the water to Terrill Thomas’ single cell, but he never recorded that action or told the next shift, and Thomas, who suffered from mental illness, was found dead in his cell a week later.
Ramsey-Guy, 39, had been charged with abusing a resident of a penal facility, a felony. But after two days of testimony at his trial in January, he pleaded guilty to obstructing an officer, a misdemeanor, based on his testimony under oath at a 2017 inquest into Thomas’ death.

LEVELLAND, Texas - A Hockley County grand jury indicted Constable Michael Lance Scott, 45, for stalking and abuse of official capacity. The office of District Attorney said Scott was accused of following a 19-year-old at her job. The indictment said Scott’s behavior toward her made her feel threatened.
Scott was also accused in the indictment of misusing a government-issued credit card.
