Sadness. So young and accomplished.

ESPN - U.S. Olympic cyclist Catlin found dead at age 23

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Olympic track cyclist Kelly Catlin, who helped the U.S. women’s pursuit team win the silver medal at the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016, died Friday at her home in California. She was 23.

USA Cycling chief executive Rob DeMartini said in a statement Sunday that “the entire cycling community is mourning this immense loss. We are offering continuous support to Kelly’s teammates, coaches and staff. We also encourage all those who knew Kelly to support each other through the grieving.”

Catlin’s father, Mark Catlin, told VeloNews that his daughter killed herself.

Catlin was born and raised near Minneapolis, Minnesota, and rose to prominence on the track as a member of the U.S. national team. She also raced on the road for the Rally UHC Pro Cycling Team, and she was pursuing a graduate degree in computational mathematics at Stanford.

In a way your statement may be more right than intended. Because by saying all, I see it as all the world and it does seem like this mess is everywhere.

Heh, I was just going to mention that too. I very seldom watch but tonight I’m doing some web work and had CBS on from basketball and just left it on.

I’m glad I did. That is a stunning development in medicine. Incredible how a bad virus like HIV can be stripped of the bad and then used to transfer corrected DNA.

Like the doctor said at the end. This opens up a whole new area of thinking on genetic correction for many diseases.

Are they switching back on juvenile hemoglobin production? There must be some evolutionary reason for this switch to adult hemoglobin, but juvenile would be better than mutant, one would think.

I commented downstairs about Cindy Yang and her alleged ties to the Chinese government. Without reading any of the articles, I can guess how things may have transpired.

Option 1. Chinese government approached her and suggested it could help and her husband out financially if they fronted this new business venture. Perhaps the government also suggested any family members still in China would also benefit from such an arrangement, or not if Yang refused. Yang wisely agreed to the plan.

Option 2. Yang and her husband realize they have the business opportunity of a lifetime. with a gullible US president who is easily flattered within their reach and a Chinese government and business community hungry for influence and financial gain in the USA. Within short order, the Chinese government also realizes it has the chance of a lifetime, to leverage Yang’s schmoozing of the rich and famous to infiltrate American government and blackmail important American leaders.

Or some combination of the two.

What we need to be aware of is pissing off the younger people, people of color and women that are really being fired up by the more progressive types.

They are looking to the future that needs to be fixed and I am concerned you turn them off and we get a repeat of Trump.

They helped us take back the house, they can’t be lost in any amount if we want a right ass kicking of Trump and to take the Senate. There is strong momentum and I don’t know if Joe fits that and could stall it.

Nancy LeTourneau has an article in Washington Monthly, Toward a More Balanced View of Joe Biden’s Legacy.

But the reason I am pointing it out specifically now is for a point our Boss made in the last thread, about Reagan being a racist.

For some historical context, Ronald Reagan was president and the biggest foreign policy issue at the time was the scourge of the apartheid government in South Africa. As violence against black citizens was on the rise, governments all over the world were being called upon to condemn apartheid and impose sanctions against the deplorable regime.

On July 22, 1986, Reagan gave a speech in which he soft-pedaled South Africa’s racist oppression and insisted that his policy of “constructive engagement” was best for that country’s black majority. He also refused to impose sanctions, which he described as “immoral and utterly repugnant” because they would hurt the people most in need of help. In response, Archbishop Desmond Tutu—who had won the Nobel Peace Prize two years earlier—issued a statement calling Reagan’s speech “utterly racist and totally disgusting.”

The next day, Reagan’s Secretary of State George Shultz appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to explain the administration’s position on South Africa. That is when Joe Biden had a defining moment of justified outrage.

Biden Shultz South Africa

Within a month of that exchange, Congress began debate on the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act, which imposed sanctions against South Africa and included five preconditions for lifting the sanctions that would essentially end apartheid. The bill passed in both chambers but was vetoed by President Reagan. When the veto was overridden, it marked “the first time a sitting president had been so rebuked on foreign policy by Congress in the entire span of the 20th century.”

It’s a bias of mine, that a Westerner cannot really represent an Eastern religion authentically without being immersed in the culture and language from whence it comes. I assume the Westerner has only appropriated enough of the religion to be able to sell his or her own version of it to his fellow Westerners.

I’d like to introduce Tucker to a lawyer friend of mine. She’s over 70, lives in Southern Utah and has been a guardian ad litem for kids caught in legal tussles between a father who left Warren Jeffs’ polygamist sect and moms who were still in. As part of her guardian ad litem role, she went, with other attorneys, to Texas to attempt to take Warren Jeffs’ deposition. Jeffs was in “answer them nothing” mode, so she got nothing out of him except he was claiming his 5th Amendment right not to incriminate himself. She went back to court and recommended that the father be given primary, sole custody because the ex-wives could not guarantee that they wouldn’t turn the daughters over to other polygamists for underage sexual assault, or kick out their sons.

I think my friend Nadine would have VOLUMES to share with Tucker. Just VOLUMES.

I was wrong — Tucker did not apologize at all. It’s the Trump way - do or say anything and never apologize no matter how vile the statement or action.

From Huffington Post:

The host responded to criticism over the clips late Sunday, moving to distance himself from them by saying he was simply caught “saying something naughty.”

“Media Matters caught me saying something naughty on a radio show more than a decade ago,” Carlson said in a statement to HuffPost. “Rather than express the usual ritual contrition, how about this: I’m on television every weeknight live for an hour. If you want to know what I think, you can watch. Anyone who disagrees with my views is welcome to come on and explain why.”

I’m getting to the point where someone respected, beyond reproach is going to have to go before the nation and simply shame the NYT to go on the record and state that HRC is innocent of all of the shit that the GOP has been accusing her of….

namely… Seth Rich did not die at her behest, neither did Vince Foster
She and Bill did not break any laws with their Whitewater land deals
She did not break or violate any rules with her use of a personal server for e-mail
There is no malfeasance with the Uranium One transactions
There were no laws broken with her use of Confidential information while she was Secretary of State
She did nothing wrong with the reactions and responses to what took place in Benghazi

and the NYT (and every other fucking media outlet that “both sided” this bullshit to death) needs to simply come out and say so and then mea culpa themselves to indicate where the got it wrong and why and feel free to cite the laws that they implied were broken and then illustrate why her actions did not break ANY FUCKING LAWS.

now you and I both know that THIS will never happen, but until it does, this boil will never be lanced and the GOP will continue to operate as the Party of Grievances and be allowed to operate as if they’ve been wronged somehow.

I’m not saying that HRC is a saint or that I agree with the POV and policy provisions that she has embraced, but that’s just it, they are positions that can be debated and discussed and analyzed. Until the Media can own up to this (because I never expect the GOP) they will continue to kick this fucking can down the road as to make themselves irrelevant.

These he calls irrefutable proof that the Earth is flat.

I swear, if you took these yokels out somewhere between the Earth and the Moon they would still find a way to deny the truth.

Tonight on Hardball… Planet Earth: Round or Flat?

excerpt:

CRANIUM: Chris, I have a PhD in astrophysics. I’ve worked for 20 years in this field. I consult at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory here in Pasadena. I can speak on this issue with some authority. May I ask what Mr. Mehlman’s scientific credentials are?

MATTHEWS: Fair question. Ken?

MEHLMAN: I built a mini-volcano out of clay, baking soda and vinegar when I was a sophomore in high school.

CRANIUM: Chris, let me cut to the chase. The Earth is round. I can show you satellite photos. We’ve taken pictures of the Earth from the moon. We have astronauts orbiting the Earth in the international space station. Mr. Mehlman can call them up and ask them if the Earth is round or flat.

MATTHEWS: Ken, your response?

MEHLMAN: I’ll respond to that specifically in a minute, Chris. But I first want to respond to something the professor said earlier. He said he consults for a laboratory in Pasadena.

MATTHEWS: Yes, he did. Please go on.

MEHLMAN: Pasadena is very close to Hollywood — home of Barbra Streisand, Martin Sheen and Rob Reiner. That tells you a little bit about where the professor is coming from.

I’m rather late to the Biden discussion, but wanted to add my two cents. My opposition to his running is largely that his “good” poll numbers right now are due to the image created in the Obama years of his being the “funky grandpa” who was satirized as washing a Trans-Am on the White House lawn or pictured with a biker mama on his lap. He earned himself a lot of good will in those years and I think that’s why he looks to a lot of people like a good choice.

You get him in the race and that satirized view of him dissolves into the reality of the cranky grandpa who rants on Christmas morning about how he doesn’t understand why the grandkids can’t be happy with the new set of encyclopedias he got them and keep wanting those damned “Mephones.” The kinda guy who, on a stage with several younger candidates talking about the need for bold initiatives, talking about “working across the aisle” to achieve “bipartisan reform” because he’s got a long career of working with Republicans and can find “common ground.” It’s not really going to help us convince voters that things like Medicare for All are realistic alternatives to the status quo when the front-runner is up on stage arguing that that’s “too much too fast” and suggesting we tinker around the edges of the current system instead because it means people can keep their insurance if they want to.

As for his long career, let’s be honest, do any of us really look forward to inevitable campaign commercials of clips from 30-40 years ago of Joe arguing for topics ranging from “traditional marriage” to “strong border control”? We can’t exactly say at this point that shit said 30 years ago isn’t relevant today, because we’re crucifying our own for year book photos.

They don’t have a choice, the economy has been in a slow-motion crisis for months now, ever since she revealed the “deal” the EU gave her. The Tories are just debating now about how shitty they will allow the situation to become before they beg Brussels to let them back in.

it was half-an-hour of Wild Kingdom, followed at 8 by Disney. Normally, there was a Volare commercial in there, sung I’m guessing by Perry Como, then fireworks going off around the magic kingdom. Kind of cool, actually, at least if you were around 7 at the time.

I remember seeing Ivanhoe, the movie, on TV when I was a kid. And I remembered we had a copy of the novel, which my grandfather had bought. So I decided to read the book, and surprisingly, it was pretty entertaining to a bookish 10-year-old such as I.

It also helped me appreciate Prince Valiant (the comic strip) a little better.

if it’s a Dell, you will more than likely discover that you can’t stick anything in it because parts may be glued in. Same issue as to why I’ll never buy another Macbook. I’ve never heard of a hard-drive being glued in place rather than being screwed in via an enclosure, and I’d suspect that it wouldn’t be possible because laptop-size drives invariably have their circuit board exposed on their underside. I’ve heard of enclosures that require proprietary screws, sure (OHAI, ASUS! Wanna know why I went HP Omen for my new machine?), but William isn’t suggesting switching motherboard components or anything like that, just a literal brain transplant. And considering I know people whose computers’ cases contain data drives that once included a Win95 portion, I suspect that’s a thing that really is done.

If the WaPo article I cited earlier is correct, it seems Boeing did not include a manual override for the fly-by-wire system. So, you’ve got pilots knowing something is very wrong, but having no way to correct the problem. Ethiopian Airlines has grounded all its Boeing 737 Max jets pending an investigation, and I think they all should be grounded worldwide until Boeing fixes the problem. It does not seem to be pilot error or a mechanical failure, but a systems failure.

Honestly, it sounds like another case of a company deciding that the users are either A) too stupid to know better than the computer or B) can’t be trusted not to override the computer in an emergency.

The UK and EU are hurtling towards a disaster and no one is at the helm in the UK as Brexit has a life all its own and no one seems to have the rational idea that it is a fucked up bulkshit idea that no one who proffered it in the first place knows how to make it happen, and all the excuses for doing it don’t hold up to the slightest scrutiny.

Brexit is a disaster that wouldn’t help the UK, and weakens the EU. Who in the world would possibly want something like that.

This guy:

Wait… no that one… This guy:

Meanwhile, Trump just released his budget proposal, and it’s DOA. He didn’t even bother to provide enough information for analysts to do a thoughtful analysis of the POS, but it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t even pass the smell test - namely massive and deep cuts everywhere but a $8.7 billion demand for his boondoggle wall.

He got none of that while the GOP were in control of Congress, and now with a split in Congress, that’s got even less chance of success.

So, that means that Tucker Carlson is going to be the next head of the WH Comms shop? Yeah, I know. He’s a misogynistic pussbucket of bigotry and racism.

Exactly. That’s the kind of guy Trump wants around his shitshow. Carlson is under attack for a whole range of insane comments made over the years (as if this is a new revelation), and Fox will stand by him (for now). This is the same org that stood by sex predators all around the organization, and turned the entire network into an agitprop outlet that seeks to sway an audience of one - Trump - but has also weaponized an entire generation and population of viewers who listen to this misinformation and agitprop for decades. Brexit was a lot about National Identity and how they would rather accept economic disadvantages in order to be able to keep the foreigners out and not let Brussels tell them how to pack their cucumbers.

Yeah, but most of those Empires bit the dust as a result of destructive wars - either civil or external. The Brits are unusual in that their final dissolution will have been entirely self-inflicted.

I didn’t read the WaPo article; the news (radio) was discussing the Lion Air accident and a new(?) anti-stall safety mechanism that Boeing had installed that was activating and that the pilots weren’t able to respond properly. Part of the Lion Air accident was being attributed to a pilot training error? And, that while the there are similarities to the accident from Jakarta to the one from Addis Ababa, too much is still unknown about the second crash.

As I understood it, the mechanism or system was mistakenly assuming the plane was in a stall situation on takeoff, and forcing the nose down to end the stall. There was no way for the pilots to override the system, at least within the scant seconds required to avoid slamming into the ground.

A somewhat similar issue affected a Korean airliner on approach to SFO a few years back. The pilot was overly confident in the plane’s automatic landing system, which somehow got into its electronic head that the ground was further away than it really was. The co-pilot noticed something was wrong, but was unable to get the pilot to switch off the auto-landing program in time. IIRC two passengers died — both high school students from China going to a summer program in the States.

I don’t know what Jeff spends; me: $8 of 10 suet cakes lasts quite a while. I go through a 40 lb bags of millet/sunflower mix and a 40lb heavy sunflower mix in about 2-3 months, safflower seed lasts quite a lot longer. Squirrel food is rationed, they’d eat me out of house and home. 50lb bag of peanuts and 20lb bags critter food doled out in the peanut ring and 5gal mason jar feeder. The squirrel-go-round gets restocked as a function of motivation.

Of course there’ll be another Trump-Kim Jong Un summit. Trump needs to deflect from his failures by engaging in more photo ops.

But there’s zero evidence that Trump listens to anyone providing advice, let alone technical advice. If he did that, there wouldn’t have been a first or second summit - because Jong Un wasn’t giving up its nuclear program and all of the concessions have been made (and kept by Trump) while Jong Un is right back where he was before the summit - ready to conduct tests and expanding his missile and nuclear programs.

Trump doesn’t quite get that Kim doesn’t take him seriously anymore. Between dropping the preconditions for face-to-face talks and treating the dismantling of old/outdated sites as major “accomplishments,” Kim knows that he doesn’t have to offer much for Trump to be happy. After all, what’s Donny going to do? Threaten to go to war? Not a chance, he’s too invested in being seen as a “peacemaker” with North Korea to do such a thing. So Kim will keep stringing him along, working to find that one thing that will be enough to get the sanctions lifted.

there’s long been a persecution complex among a certain segment of conservatives, particularly those of the Christianist variety. They see anyone getting equal protection under the law as somehow invalidating their rights or as discrimination against them (this was a big current in the ACA contraception mandate cases). Every once in a while, you’d see it pop up when discussing things like affirmative action, but mostly on the fringe (either because it was a fringe opinion (the mythical “reverse discrimination”) or because those speaking were smart enough to know it was an opinion you couldn’t share in polite company). But as the GOP and the conservative movement has become Trumpified, and no longer represents any sort of intellectually driven (I know, I know) ideology and is instead now just a grievance based movement, this shit has become mainstreamed in the party. Which is also why the party is likely shrinking rather than growing.

Sometimes I think we are one decision away from the Supreme Court reinstituting Plessy vs Ferguson.

I mean, theoretically, we always are. But the difference is that it would be much harder to justify a Plessy style decision in light of the 14th Amendment and the widely accepted legal opinion that the 14th Amendment was specifically designed to overturn Plessy was very wrongly decided in light of the 14th Amendment. Also, as conservatives will likely find if/when an abortion ban law comes before the Supreme Court, it’s much harder to unwind/undo a recognized fundamental/constitutional right than it is to reject it before it is recognized. Even scaling it back is rather difficult.

We saw that, a bit, with same sex marriage a decade ago. Telling someone they have a right and then saying “on second thought, not so much” is almost always a means to failure.

Trump’s policies are DOA, but had they any chance of being passed, it would mean more people dying from lack of health coverage, medically induced bankruptcies, and more starvation.

Trump thinks gutting SNAP would help.

SNAP benefits are one of the most efficient and effective programs out there. For every $1 spent by the feds, it creates $1.40 in economic activity.

Bonanza may have been off by then. This was relatively early 70’s and I think it had been absorbed by the Matrix by that point. I can still remember original Gunsmoke episodes, but I think that show lasted well into the 70’s. I certainly remember original Little House on the Prairie episodes, including the pilot, which apparently means I remember 1973 or 4 pretty solidly. (Hell, I can remember Apple’s Way, or whatever that was called, and I think they only made 6 episodes of it in 1975.)

Yes, and no. I mean, even pre-Civil War, the individual states weren’t sending their own ambassadors to other nations the way that EU members do. Nor could, say, Florida decide to go to war with Cuba on it’s own, the way that the UK and Poland joined the US in the Iraq War without the rest of the continent.

The EU is a uniquely Post War creature that operates unlike anything else in history.

I just have had awful experiences with Dell. You are likely right about the hard-drive. I just remember taking my last Dell, which was incredibly forward-enabled when it was built, and having the guy look inside and say, “Yeah, sorry, can’t upgrade the power supply cause it won’t fit. Can’t upgrade the motherboard because it’s not upgradeable. Can’t do pretty much anything.” And that was the desktop tower. As I recall, the laptop had the graphics integrated into the motherboard, so if the graphics went on the fritz, you were just basically screwed.

It would be like Merkel exclaiming tomorrow that the German people feel as though they’re not getting a fair shake from Brussels and they’re thinking about leaving.

Another example of the old saw about “assume” proving true: first, they seem to have (apparently deliberately) ignored/waved-away the entire raison d’etre of the European Union, I.e. that as a Union, they’ll all share in the benefits of membership - but only if they act as a unit. And secondly ( as seems to be the general opinion here on LGF at any rate), they have vastly overestimated the level of “pressure” an “exited” Britain could exert.

But since the last point has been based (AFAICT) mainly on the near-all-pervasive sense of arrogant jingoistic “nationalism” that is unfortunately the default setting for a lot of British political attitudes, it’s no wonder it’s proved a popular (if utterly ineffective) bargaining position…

He’s looking to gut Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP. Each would see massive and deep cuts.

But yeah, Trump also wants to spend $8.7 billion for his boondoggle wall.

The House should zero out the money for the wall and transfer it to SNAP, Medicare, and Medicaid.

Talking about TV “back in the day” reminds me that, as an early Milennial, I remember the days back when TV networks would actually have an “end of broadcast day.” Then came the rise of infomercials while cable networks started showing whatever old shows they could get their hands on (ex: Nick at Nite).

The entire planet should use the same time and get over the idea that some arbitrary number on a dial means something special about where the sun is located.

I recommend adding one hour to each day. That way every location will slowly rotate through the sun cycle. This will still require some adjustments, but it would work better than the sun rising at 2 am in some locations.

That latter is true of almost all laptops. It’s also true if desktops, though you have a slot you can stick a graphics card into if the integrated graphics goes out.

If you think that’s bad, think about smartphones.

I have a Motorola droid and the battery is glued to the motherboard. If you want to get a new battery because the old one is fubar, you need to either send it out, or find someone who does the specialized repair. They can’t just plug and play.

For a battery, which is a part that goes.

Everything else about the phone is fine, but once the battery goes, it’s all downhill.

I rather think the problem with going off the Iowa polls (which seems to be the big thing right now) is something I saw remarked upon by a pundit the other day: The first two states to weigh in are older and whiter than the national average, which means they skew further to the right and are going to be more comfortable with men like Biden and Bernie than they are Kamala Harris or Beto O’Rourke. Iowa is still something of a bellweather. 2000 is the only year since 1988 that it didn’t vote for the winner of the electoral college. New Hampshire has gone to the GOP nominee only once since 1988, in 2000.

But having Nevada and South Carolina be early primary states has sort of helped dilute the older/whiter issues of Iowa and New Hampshire.

Trump would destroy discretionary programs, cutting them by $1.3 trillion. These are things like Section 8, Head Start, WIC, LIHEAP, public housing, NOAA, NIH, NASA, NSF, the CDC - most of the programs that we think of when we think of what the government does.

I wonder if Trump even looked at the budget. This is the GOP budget. This is their ideal — with a trillion dollar deficit so that they can come next for Medicare and Social Security,

Well, I guess I’m a Certified Old by now, but I remember when I was a kid (L.A. late ’50s), over-the-air TV stations (which were all there were back then) didn’t necessarily broadcast 24 hours a day: as I recall, many/most of them stopped their programming (if not the signal) at 12:00 midnight, and started up again (usually with the “farm report”) about 5:00 or 6:00am.
I’m guessing it had something to do with economics early on, but not much later, most of the stations had gone to 24h: broadcasting something/anything to catch night-owls’ eyeballs: and making staring at the static/test-pattern-with-Indian a thing of the past…

What the Brexit crowd assumed (and the Tories discovered was bullshit) was that they didn’t need to deal with the “elites” in Brussels, they could just bypass them and go straight to Berlin, to Paris, to Rome, and pressure the individual states of the EU to give them beneficial deals or at least keep things consistent with the existing status quo.

Individual EU states don’t do that, that is why they are in the EU; to negotiate as a bloc.

But Britain somehow thought that it pulled a lot more weight and failed to see that the EU needed to set a harsh example to anyone else thinking about leaving, namely, no free movements of goods and capital without similar free movement of people.

In fairness, there are 9 EU members that don’t use the Euro. The UK and Denmark have a special exemption under the original treaty creating the Euro. And the EU hasn’t actually tried to force any of the other seven members to adopt the currency.

The thing is, the EU has always been on a course towards a United States of Europe super-state. I’d argue that the EU is effectively a state under international law at this point, but the world just sort of pretends that it is not.

In some respects. But their approach to the refugee crisis also shows that they are sovereign states in that respect; Germany took more than its share while other states took few or almost none.

The UK did have a lot of power in the early days of the EC/EU. It was basically the UK, France, and (West) Germany. But as membership expanded, particularly in the aughts; and with the German economy doubling the UK’s, their power waned. They didn’t realize it because the UK, France, and Germany are still the three most powerful drivers in the Union, but relatively to where they were in say, 1993, they’re not on as strong a footing.

For those who follow art and design, this year marks the centennial of the Bauhaus movement, and for a school that existed for only 14 years, its lasting legacy lives on all around us.

It’s also a story inextricably tied to the rise of the Nazis, the persecution of those who were at the school, where/how those who were at the school fled, and what some of those teachers who remained did to survive.

Israel’s Tel Aviv has the world’s largest collection of Bauhaus designed structures anywhere with more than 4,000 structures.

“by CPAC next year we should all be repping at least 225 on bench, have a QT trad white gf, and have had at least one role in local politics,” Bressman wrote in another post from April 2018.

In other posts, Bressman says the only downside of running down a Black Lives Matter supporter is that he has “a nice car and it’s white.”

Good morning!

Just getting around to checking out the goings-on around here.

Looks like “Woody” Woodpecker was at Jeffery’s Fly-in.

Probably already mentioned but the Boeing DC 737-800 does have a manual override system for their anti-stall program. The problem seems to have been Boening didn’t inform their customers enough on how this system works and how to override it manually. Many pilots were not informed of the new system, how it works and what to do if the sensors inputs get screwed up.

I saw an America pilot do a demo on how to shut it down. It seemed simple enough, but if you don’t know and in a panic situation you are screwed.

Seems like both Boeing and the airline companies needed much better communications. And both planes that have crashed recently are foreign companies operating them, so who knows how the communications went when trying to explain the new procedures.
