ESPN - U.S. Olympic cyclist Catlin found dead at age 23
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Olympic track cyclist Kelly Catlin, who helped the U.S. women’s pursuit team win the silver medal at the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016, died Friday at her home in California. She was 23.
USA Cycling chief executive Rob DeMartini said in a statement Sunday that “the entire cycling community is mourning this immense loss. We are offering continuous support to Kelly’s teammates, coaches and staff. We also encourage all those who knew Kelly to support each other through the grieving.”
Catlin’s father, Mark Catlin, told VeloNews that his daughter killed herself.
Catlin was born and raised near Minneapolis, Minnesota, and rose to prominence on the track as a member of the U.S. national team. She also raced on the road for the Rally UHC Pro Cycling Team, and she was pursuing a graduate degree in computational mathematics at Stanford.

Heh, I was just going to mention that too. I very seldom watch but tonight I’m doing some web work and had CBS on from basketball and just left it on.
I’m glad I did. That is a stunning development in medicine. Incredible how a bad virus like HIV can be stripped of the bad and then used to transfer corrected DNA.
Like the doctor said at the end. This opens up a whole new area of thinking on genetic correction for many diseases.

I commented downstairs about Cindy Yang and her alleged ties to the Chinese government. Without reading any of the articles, I can guess how things may have transpired.
Option 1. Chinese government approached her and suggested it could help and her husband out financially if they fronted this new business venture. Perhaps the government also suggested any family members still in China would also benefit from such an arrangement, or not if Yang refused. Yang wisely agreed to the plan.
Option 2. Yang and her husband realize they have the business opportunity of a lifetime. with a gullible US president who is easily flattered within their reach and a Chinese government and business community hungry for influence and financial gain in the USA. Within short order, the Chinese government also realizes it has the chance of a lifetime, to leverage Yang’s schmoozing of the rich and famous to infiltrate American government and blackmail important American leaders.
Or some combination of the two.

What we need to be aware of is pissing off the younger people, people of color and women that are really being fired up by the more progressive types.
They are looking to the future that needs to be fixed and I am concerned you turn them off and we get a repeat of Trump.
They helped us take back the house, they can’t be lost in any amount if we want a right ass kicking of Trump and to take the Senate. There is strong momentum and I don’t know if Joe fits that and could stall it.
By the way, I am non-committal other than I have mentioned I would like no Sanders and not keen on Biden. But I will vote for the Democrat. I’m watching and worrying a bit because times are really fucking bizarre.

But the reason I am pointing it out specifically now is for a point our Boss made in the last thread, about Reagan being a racist.
For some historical context, Ronald Reagan was president and the biggest foreign policy issue at the time was the scourge of the apartheid government in South Africa. As violence against black citizens was on the rise, governments all over the world were being called upon to condemn apartheid and impose sanctions against the deplorable regime.
On July 22, 1986, Reagan gave a speech in which he soft-pedaled South Africa’s racist oppression and insisted that his policy of “constructive engagement” was best for that country’s black majority. He also refused to impose sanctions, which he described as “immoral and utterly repugnant” because they would hurt the people most in need of help. In response, Archbishop Desmond Tutu—who had won the Nobel Peace Prize two years earlier—issued a statement calling Reagan’s speech “utterly racist and totally disgusting.”
The next day, Reagan’s Secretary of State George Shultz appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to explain the administration’s position on South Africa. That is when Joe Biden had a defining moment of justified outrage.
Within a month of that exchange, Congress began debate on the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act, which imposed sanctions against South Africa and included five preconditions for lifting the sanctions that would essentially end apartheid. The bill passed in both chambers but was vetoed by President Reagan. I’m rather late to the Biden discussion, but wanted to add my two cents. My opposition to his running is largely that his “good” poll numbers right now are due to the image created in the Obama years of his being the “funky grandpa” who was satirized as washing a Trans-Am on the White House lawn or pictured with a biker mama on his lap. He earned himself a lot of good will in those years and I think that’s why he looks to a lot of people like a good choice.
You get him in the race and that satirized view of him dissolves into the reality of the cranky grandpa who rants on Christmas morning about how he doesn’t understand why the grandkids can’t be happy with the new set of encyclopedias he got them and keep wanting those damned “Mephones.” The kinda guy who, on a stage with several younger candidates talking about the need for bold initiatives, talking about “working across the aisle” to achieve “bipartisan reform” because he’s got a long career of working with Republicans and can find “common ground.” It’s not really going to help us convince voters that things like Medicare for All are realistic alternatives to the status quo when the front-runner is up on stage arguing that that’s “too much too fast” and suggesting we tinker around the edges of the current system instead because it means people can keep their insurance if they want to.
As for his long career, let’s be honest, do any of us really look forward to inevitable campaign commercials of clips from 30-40 years ago of Joe arguing for topics ranging from “traditional marriage” to “strong border control”? We can’t exactly say at this point that shit said 30 years ago isn’t relevant today, because we’re crucifying our own for year book photos.

When I was little, I remember watching (on b&w TV) Disney and the early Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. That was the late afternoon/early evenings of Sundays for me.

We also had a Sunday afternoon program on WGN in Chicago, Family Classics, which features greats like Lassie, Ivanhoe, Robin Hood, Sink the Bismarck, Around the World in 80 Days, The TIme Machine: all the favorite movies of my childhood.
I remember seeing Ivanhoe, the movie, on TV when I was a kid. And I remembered we had a copy of the novel, which my grandfather had bought. So I decided to read the book, and surprisingly, it was pretty entertaining to a bookish 10-year-old such as I.
It also helped me appreciate Prince Valiant (the comic strip) a little better.

I’ve never heard of a hard-drive being glued in place rather than being screwed in via an enclosure, and I’d suspect that it wouldn’t be possible because laptop-size drives invariably have their circuit board exposed on their underside. I’ve heard of enclosures that require proprietary screws, sure (OHAI, ASUS! Wanna know why I went HP Omen for my new machine?), but William isn’t suggesting switching motherboard components or anything like that, just a literal brain transplant. And considering I know people whose computers’ cases contain data drives that once included a Win95 portion, I suspect that’s a thing that really is done.

So, you’ve got pilots knowing something is very wrong, but having no way to correct the problem. Ethiopian Airlines has grounded all its Boeing 737 Max jets pending an investigation, and I think they all should be grounded worldwide until Boeing fixes the problem. It does not seem to be pilot error or a mechanical failure, but a systems failure.

I don’t even like drive by wire technology. I want a cable connecting the gas pedal to the carburetor. I drove a Prius in the snow once and if the wheels started slipping it just disabled the accelerator…super fuckin’ dangerous. Having airplanes behave the same scares the crap out of me.

I didn’t read the WaPo article; the news (radio) was discussing the Lion Air accident and a new(?) anti-stall safety mechanism that Boeing had installed that was activating and that the pilots weren’t able to respond properly. Part of the Lion Air accident was being attributed to a pilot training error? As I understood it, the mechanism or system was mistakenly assuming the plane was in a stall situation on takeoff, and forcing the nose down to end the stall. There was no way for the pilots to override the system, at least within the scant seconds required to avoid slamming into the ground.
A somewhat similar issue affected a Korean airliner on approach to SFO a few years back. The pilot was overly confident in the plane’s automatic landing system, which somehow got into its electronic head that the ground was further away than it really was. The co-pilot noticed something was wrong, but was unable to get the pilot to switch off the auto-landing program in time. IIRC two passengers died — both high school students from China going to a summer program in the States.

I go through a 40 lb bags of millet/sunflower mix and a 40lb heavy sunflower mix in about 2-3 months, safflower seed lasts quite a lot longer. Squirrel food is rationed, they’d eat me out of house and home. 50lb bag of peanuts and 20lb bags critter food doled out in the peanut ring and 5gal mason jar feeder. The squirrel-go-round gets restocked as a function of motivation.

there’s long been a persecution complex among a certain segment of conservatives, particularly those of the Christianist variety. They see anyone getting equal protection under the law as somehow invalidating their rights or as discrimination against them (this was a big current in the ACA contraception mandate cases). Every once in a while, you’d see it pop up when discussing things like affirmative action, but mostly on the fringe (either because it was a fringe opinion (the mythical “reverse discrimination”) or because those speaking were smart enough to know it was an opinion you couldn’t share in polite company). But as the GOP and the conservative movement has become Trumpified, and no longer represents any sort of intellectually driven (I know, I know) ideology and is instead now just a grievance based movement, this shit has become mainstreamed in the party. Which is also why the party is likely shrinking rather than growing.

Whites are used to having all the advantages, now they are starting to lose them to due to demographic shifts. That’s not discrimination, that’s reality.
It also goes back to the very founding myth of America: the Puritans did not come to America to escape religious persecution, they came here so they could practice their own form of fundamentalist religious persecution without interference from other people who did not share their views.

Bonanza may have been off by then. This was relatively early 70’s and I think it had been absorbed by the Matrix by that point. I can still remember original Gunsmoke episodes, but I think that show lasted well into the 70’s. I certainly remember original Little House on the Prairie episodes, including the pilot, which apparently means I remember 1973 or 4 pretty solidly. I’ve never heard of a hard-drive being glued in place rather than being screwed in via an enclosure, and I’d suspect that it wouldn’t be possible because laptop-size drives invariably have their circuit board exposed on their underside. I’ve heard of enclosures that require proprietary screws, sure (OHAI, ASUS! I just remember taking my last Dell, which was incredibly forward-enabled when it was built, and having the guy look inside and say, “Yeah, sorry, can’t upgrade the power supply cause it won’t fit. Can’t upgrade the motherboard because it’s not upgradeable. Can’t do pretty much anything.” And that was the desktop tower. As I recall, the laptop had the graphics integrated into the motherboard, so if the graphics went on the fritz, you were just basically screwed.

Another example of the old saw about “assume” proving true: first, they seem to have (apparently deliberately) ignored/waved-away the entire raison d’etre of the European Union, I.e. that as a Union, they’ll all share in the benefits of membership - but only if they act as a unit. And secondly ( as seems to be the general opinion here on LGF at any rate), they have vastly overestimated the level of “pressure” an “exited” Britain could exert.

Iowa is still something of a bellweather. 2000 is the only year since 1988 that it didn’t vote for the winner of the electoral college. New Hampshire has gone to the GOP nominee only once since 1988, in 2000.

Talking about TV “back in the day” reminds me that, as an early Milennial, I remember the days back when TV networks would actually have an “end of broadcast day.” Then came the rise of infomercials while cable networks started showing whatever old shows they could get their hands on (ex: Nick at Nite).
I suddenly feel the need to scream at some kid to get off my lawn.
Well, I guess I’m a Certified Old by now, but I remember when I was a kid (L.A. late ’50s), over-the-air TV stations (which were all there were back then) didn’t necessarily broadcast 24 hours a day: as I recall, many/most of them stopped their programming (if not the signal) at 12:00 midnight, and started up again (usually with the “farm report”) about 5:00 or 6:00am.
I’m guessing it had something to do with economics early on, but not much later, most of the stations had gone to 24h: broadcasting something/anything to catch night-owls’ eyeballs: and making staring at the static/test-pattern-with-Indian a thing of the past…

What the Brexit crowd assumed (and the Tories discovered was bullshit) was that they didn’t need to deal with the “elites” in Brussels, they could just bypass them and go straight to Berlin, to Paris, to Rome, and pressure the individual states of the EU to give them beneficial deals or at least keep things consistent with the existing status quo.
Individual EU states don’t do that, that is why they are in the EU; to negotiate as a bloc.
But Britain somehow thought that it pulled a lot more weight and failed to see that the EU needed to set a harsh example to anyone else thinking about leaving, namely, no free movements of goods and capital without similar free movement of people.

In fairness, there are 9 EU members that don’t use the Euro. The UK and Denmark have a special exemption under the original treaty creating the Euro. And the EU hasn’t actually tried to force any of the other seven members to adopt the currency.
The thing is, the EU has always been on a course towards a United States of Europe super-state. I’d argue that the EU is effectively a state under international law at this point, but the world just sort of pretends that it is not.
In some respects. But their approach to the refugee crisis also shows that they are sovereign states in that respect; Germany took more than its share while other states took few or almost none.

I still remember the National Anthem followed by a test pattern…in Russia, they broadcast a loud warning beep to remind people to turn off their TV’s as they had a nasty tendency to overheat or short out and cause fires.

The UK did have a lot of power in the early days of the EC/EU. It was basically the UK, France, and (West) Germany. But as membership expanded, particularly in the aughts; and with the German economy doubling the UK’s, their power waned. They didn’t realize it because the UK, France, and Germany are still the three most powerful drivers in the Union, but relatively to where they were in say, 1993, they’re not on as strong a footing.

Just getting around to checking out the goings-on around here.
Looks like “Woody” Woodpecker was at Jeffery’s Fly-in.
Probably already mentioned but the Boeing DC 737-800 does have a manual override system for their anti-stall program. The problem seems to have been Boening didn’t inform their customers enough on how this system works and how to override it manually. Many pilots were not informed of the new system, how it works and what to do if the sensors inputs get screwed up.
I saw an America pilot do a demo on how to shut it down. It seemed simple enough, but if you don’t know and in a panic situation you are screwed.
Seems like both Boeing and the airline companies needed much better communications. And both planes that have crashed recently are foreign companies operating them, so who knows how the communications went when trying to explain the new procedures.
