CL’d on last thread:

You have to kill the immigrants, they’re cockroaches. All those who are listening, rise so we can fight for the America we want. Fight with the weapons you have at your disposal: those who have guns, with guns, those who have knives, with knives. We must all fight.
We must all fight the Mexicans and the Asians and the Muslims. We must finish with them, exterminate them, sweep them from the whole country from sea to shining sea. There must be no refuge for them. They must be exterminated. There is no other way
.”

It reads like it’s been lifted off the Breitbart of Fox News comment section, but this is actually a segment from a radio recording urging the killing of Tutsis during the Rwandan Genocide that I have slightly modified to pertain to todays America.

When we have an “infestation” of MS-13 GANGS in certain parts of our country, who do we send to get them out? ICE! They are tougher and smarter than these rough criminal elelments that bad immigration laws allow into our country.

- President Donald Trump”

There is almost no difference in the rhetoric.

Daisy, Day 6 Update:
In many aspects, she is doing so much better in terms of breathing, temperature, etc.
OTH, she is still not interested in food at all; water only and that rarely spends much time in her stomach before it gets heaved out (even with a prescription anti-nausea drug, she was emptying her stomach within 30 minutes).

So, back to the veterinarian today. Ultrasound showed no obvious masses, temperature was normal, but she is still vomiting and pretty much quiet (and “quiet” is a scary mode for a JRT).

So, since I am unable to keep her hydrated sans vomiting at home (no matter how long I withhold food and water to give her tummy a rest), she has checked into the animal hospital/spa where she will get IV treatments, and lots of TLC from the pretty vet techs (and the handsome ones as well!)

Fingers crossed, the IV hydration will give her gastric system the rest it needs.

This was actual option #2.
The other options were exploratory surgery or taking her to a specialist vet in Lexington for an endoscopy and other invasive tests.

Daisy is 17 years old. I will not subject her to what is in essence torture just to keep her alive for a while longer. Option #2 seems to be our best option to keep her comfortable and hope that it works.

So weird though that she hasn’t had any interest in food for six days, but still weighed in at one pound heavier than she did on Saturday. We wanted to suggest water retention, but that’s kinda hard to do when water makes one throw up.

tis a mystery…

The Wells Fargo CEO is right, though. They lent the money, but if the company operating the pipeline goes under before the loan is repaid, WF is as screwed as everyone else (well, slightly less, because when the company goes into bankruptcy, WF will be a secured creditor so they’ll get a nickle on the dollar compared to the penny on the dollar everyone else will be lucky to get).

If anything, it’s an argument for high risk ventures to be fully insured and for insurance regulations to be such that the insurance company can’t avoid full coverage.

I really liked the young Fury and Coulson but wish they would have had a little more interaction between the two of them. Coulson had such a small part it almost could have been cut without losing much. The other thing is, and maybe it was just me, but the de-aging process on his face really struck me as off. Again, I don’t know if it was me or of they just spent all the time and money on Fury’s face-lift (which was fantastic), but it was just off somehow for me.

Goose was a really fun addition. I really hope he shows up again, maybe in Endgame. Lol, that would be a great end credits scene, a defeated Thanos, sitting on his throne plotting revenge only to get eaten by Goose.

LOL. So Fox says. And yet…

High taxes be damned, the rich keep moving to California

Are rich people fleeing California to escape astronomical state income taxes? That’s the word. But it’s fake news.

In fact, more wealthy people are moving to California than leaving, research indicates. It’s the poor and middle class who are departing.

It makes sense. If you’re getting rich in California and can afford to live comfortably here in this balmy climate, there’s little incentive to leave — except to stick it to the tax collector in Sacramento.

One small part of this problem is the total lack of insulation that means that most people in urban CA pay heating bills in winter that are comparable to what people pay in places with real winters.

Mine is 1950. REAL 2x4’s. Pier and beam with big cement castings holding up the piers on solid limestone. 68 years old, flat as a strap. Random-shaped limestone clad, metal roof. Jalousie windows flanking 6’ x 6’ plate glass on the front. Just under 1,200 sq ft in the front, a 2 car garage finished out in the back (1-1) and a 2-1 up front. Nice house. We bought it in ‘97 for $155. Don’t even ask what it’s actually worth, now, but north of $800.

Hence the $1,000+/month property taxes.

Believe it or not, Art Deco and Moderne were actually fairly popular in Lubbock during the 30s and 40s. There are some great examples there that go begging on the market. The reason is that they are now in “bad” neighborhoods, ie too many brownish folk. The yokels therefore prefer newly built housing. New=white. I am convinced that white flight is at least as important as population growth in promoting the endless expanses of shoddy tract houses and ghastly mcmansions. Also, from that same article about Pentagon vacancies:

The former official added that Shanahan’s indecisive style, lack of experience in Washington, and failure to understand the role of Congress may drive some Pentagon officials out the door. Shanahan worked at Boeing for more than 30 years before taking the deputy secretary of defense job in 2017.

“Secretary Mattis was the smartest man in any room, but he sought dissenting opinions and listened more than he talked. By contrast, Shanahan believes he’s an expert on everything and routinely dismisses divergent or contrary views,” said the former official.

The thing that gets me is in Las Vegas, and I think this is probably true in other cities, is that a lot of these areas are taken by Hispanics who are in the trades. I’ve noticed that in those areas, the old houses benefit from their skills and they renovate and fix them up so they are beautiful.

My first ex/high school sweetheart lives in San Pedro in a house that was built 100+ years ago. It has a little addition. There is no insulation and lots of cracks to see outside. The foundation is crooked and tilted. The view of the harbor is spectacular! And it’s on a piece of land that would cost a shit-ton of money. I would so love to help him buy it and build a wonderful home on it, but that’s probably not in either one of our leagues on our salaries.

Restaurant review app seeks to help conservatives find safe spaces

A new app seeks to find safe restaurants and businesses for conservatives.

The app is called 63red Safe. It’s made by 63red, which is a group that creates websites, apps and other digital tools specifically for conservatives who support President Donald Trump.

The 63red Safe app’s tagline says it is “keeping conservatives safe.” The app uses “yes” or “no” questions to allow users to rate restaurants and businesses on how they treat conservatives.

Despite this political focus, the app’s creator said it is designed to get politics out of local businesses

Restaurant review app seeks to help conservatives find safe spaces

Funny you should mention that, because it’s already a dumpster fire full of security holes:

Ars Technica: “Yelp, but for MAGA” turns red over security disclosure, threatens researcher

I’ve been commenting in that thread all night; my first post in the thread, replying to someone saying “Shouldn’t it be concerning that someone feels a need to create such an app? I’m baffled by businesses that think it’s fair to refuse service to someone because they where the same hat as the President of the United States’:

The difference between American “liberal” and “conservative” businesses: “liberal” business owners typically want to serve all comers without either overt or covert discrimination, provided said patrons aren’t acting like assholes. “Conservative” business owners, OTOH, seem to have no problems discriminating against potential customers who aren’t “of the body”, those who aren’t like themselves (see the Colorado cake shop case for a prime example), and have no qualms about perverting the power of the state to enforce it.

Frankly, “liberal” business owners seem to be more capitalistic than the “conservatives” who supposedly champion small business to the point of fetishizing.

AOC:

This, right here, is a problem.

Institutions can engage in unlimited financing of fossil fuels, building unstable pipelines + reaping profits, but when the bill comes to clean up oil spills & fix damages - they can conveniently kick the can.

So, who will pay for climate change?

If we want a Free Market to function, we mus assure that the price of a commodity reflects its actual costs.

The problem with fossil fuels (and plastics) is that the health, environmental & clean-up costs are conveniently socialized.

See?

Socialism is the problem.

One of the better Youtube astro channels is Deep Sky Videos, from the U. of Nottingham. They have a series on Messier objects that is worth the time.

Anyway, 4 years ago or so one of the professors (the best one IMO) wanted to discuss car accidents in conjunction with discussing M9:

I can cope with Astrology as long as they do not talk of causality: things are going this way because Mercury is in retrograde, etc., but simply that there is some connection: things tend to go a certain way when Mercury is in retrograde.

I do not at all follow horoscopes and predictions at all, at most I turn to them when I have exhausted all other possibilities of resolving a situation and still seek some sort of advice.

But I must admit that when it comes to defining and assigning personality types to star signs, I am textbook Aries.

5/ The idea that there’s a groundswell of “impeach tomorrow” folks in the Democratic Party is a farce—a media creation that allows 100 stories of internal turmoil in the Democratic Party to be written. A handful of House members who want Articles today does *not* a movement make.

There is a fixation on two topics:

“Democrats in turmoil over…” to which they blow up any discussion within the party into a dispute,

and

“Democrats veer hard left”, for which they currently have AOC, who wants to confiscate rich people’s money to turn America into a Socialist Green Hellhole and take away our airline flights and our hamburgers and make us live in lean-tos and wipe our butts with dried leaves…

That was an idea way back in the 1970s, but then it was the City wanting to split off from the State. Left standing around scratching its head was Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk Counties), which would have been separated from the rest of the State or forced to become part of the NYC.

It was a dumb idea then, and it’s a dumb idea now.

The 63red Safe app’s tagline says it is “keeping conservatives safe.” The app uses “yes” or “no” questions to allow users to rate restaurants and businesses on how they treat conservatives.

The only way a restaurant (a decidedly non-political business) would know the politics of a patron is if said patron was broadcasting it in some manner. Oh, is this for obnoxious people wear MAGAt hats or ‘fuck your feelings’ shirts? “Yes, I’m a conservative asshole and the restaurant didn’t put up with my vocal fee-fees.”

That aspect of it gets played down. Public displays of obnoxiousness are a good way to get ejected from restaurants and bars.

This is a different case for politicians and public figures, but those are folks who have actively made their views known to anyone who watches the news or follows them on the Internet

One of the (extremely) few things I could applaud Rudy Giuliani doing during his mayoralty was his response to one of the periodic “secession” flaps ginned up by some local bozos on Staten Island. IIRC, he held a presser where he said he’d be fine with that Borough seceding, providing:
1. There was a fair referendum.
2. The newly “independent” Richmond County properly reimbursed NYC for the century or so of investments in infrastructure and services it had made on SI. He had had the Finance Dept run up some preliminary estimates: they ran into eight figures, as I recall - “secession” talk died down pretty quickly after that….

So, you’ve done an increase of 2 orders of magnitude of a group of bacteria that are harmless. Whip-de-shit. It’s the same math that makes people think that eliminating 99.9% (three orders of magnitude) of bacteria on a surface means something; hint, it does not. Calculus changes if person is sick.

The bacteria involved are ones that the vast majority of people already have immunity against, because those bacteria live in every human being.

Killing that 99.9% just leaves the 0.1% that can really ruin your day, because those are the ones that are resistant to being killed off.

I agree. I have heard about it before. The idea this time would be three parts: the city, mantauk (Long island) and new Amsterdam ( the rest of the state). Up here in St. Lawrence county, the idea is old. It also includes seccesional ideas of Canada for extreme views and jokes and the seccesion of the akwasasne mohawk reservation and their sovereignty.

I understand that alot of the southern part of the state carries a lot of weight, but the people here think Cuomo is the “emperor” and that there is nothing to be gained from the southern part of the state.

Something I did not know about vitamin D and Multiple Sclerosis.

Geographic area and Vitamin D

-MS is known to occur more frequently in areas that are farther from the equator

-People born in an area with a high risk of MS who then move to an area with a lower risk before the age of 15 assume the risk of their new area. This suggest that exposure to some environmental agent before puberty may predispose a person to develop MS later on

-Low vitamin D levels in the blood have been identified as a risk factor for the development of MS

-People who live closer to the equator are exposed to greater amounts of sunlight year-round. As a result, they tend to have higher levels of naturally-produced Vitamin D, which is thought to support immune function and may help protect against immune-mediated diseases like MS

Another interesting point of this, that should make the private schools frightened a bit, is that it’s really only the admissions that are tough. Once you’re in, that school really isn’t any more challenging than any other school.

Now, my first attempt at college was a WPI, and I will tell you it was tough. I burnt out is the reason I didn’t finish; being the first person in my family to go to college, and coming from a barely middle class family, I didn’t have the money or the knowledge to properly give myself breaks to survive. So, not every school falls under this, but I doubt WPI is accepting too many children of actors who don’t show an interest in engineering.

Don’t know if it’s been mentioned before, but I found this bit of info in today’s NYT piece on the 737 safety flap.

For decades, the F.A.A. has used a network of outside experts, known as F.A.A. designees, to certify that aircraft meet safety standards. In 2005, the regulator shifted its approach for how it delegated authority outside the agency, creating a new program through which aircraft manufacturers like Boeing could choose their own employees to be the designees and help certify their planes.

The program is intended to help the F.A.A. stretch its limited resources, while also benefiting plane makers who are eager to avoid delays in the certification process.

The regulator maintains offices inside Boeing’s factories, including those in Renton, Wash., and in Charleston, S.C. “I’ve raised this concern in the past, about people who go to work at the Boeing plant who work for the F.A.A.,” said Representative Peter A. DeFazio, Democrat of Oregon and the chairman of the House transportation committee. “How much scrutiny are they applying, and could they be influenced?”

The F.A.A.’s top safety official, Ali Bahrami, has worked closely with Boeing during his career, directing the agency’s certification of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the 747-8 passenger and freighter models.

So basically airliner manufacturers - which I gather nowadays means just Boeing - are basically self-inspecting and self-certifying their own products. And the Government (staffed in large part by ex-Boeing people) are just taking their word for it on regulatory issues.

It may not mean much - after all, no one’s interests are served by having planes fall out of the sky, but I’m sure it’s a contributing factor to the current mess.

Chickens in a poultry farm in northwest France are suspected of killing a fox that tried to sneak into their coop.

The fox is thought to have entered the henhouse at an agricultural school at dusk last week and become trapped inside by light-controlled automatic hatch doors that close when the sun goes down.

Students at Le Gros Chêne school in Brittany discovered the fox’s body the following morning when making their rounds to check on the chickens.

“There, in the corner, we found this dead fox,” Pascal Daniel, the head of farming at the school, told AFP. “There was a herd instinct and they attacked him with their beaks.”

So, I asked for some computer advice the other night. My biggest concern was with some video issues but a co-worker gave me a 19” Acer monitor that my Vostro can push at 1440x990. Since even if the cable to the screen does give out I can still use the external video, I’m ok with keeping this machine short term. So I’ve decided that instead of replacing my Dell Vostro 3458 14” (Celeron 3205u) with a Dell Latitude E6410 14” (either i5-520m or slightly better i7-620m), the newer Vostro can be bumped up to 16 gb. of RAM for less than the used computer.

So free screen & cheaper RAM, we’ll see if it helps performance. I’ll wait on a CPU bump till I can afford a slightly bigger bump.

Thanks for the information!

VW is going after the EV market. Trying to undercut Tesla imho.

The goal is to build 22 million battery electric vehicles, or BEVs, over the next decade, up from a previous target of 15 million, he said. The move is widely expected to put a strain on the German automaker’s bottom line. Profit margins on electrified vehicles are significantly below conventionally powered products with many all-electric models sold at a loss, according to industry analysts.

and

While specific details haven’t been released, the automaker has broadly hinted that it will target the low end of the market. Juergen Stackmann, VW’s board member overseeing sales, said it will be priced between $24,000 to $32,000, depending upon the size of its battery pack. The cheapest version will provide 206 miles of range.

I’m holding out for the diesel electric…

If the plane is American-made, then the NTSB may be invited to join the investigation. Sometimes it could help lead due to expertise and lack of same in the country where the crash occurred or the operator of the airline.

The builder of the airline will also participate in the investigation.

Under Trump we have a vacancy at the head of the FAA, and interim leadership positions from the top down. He’s undermining public safety.

Morning Consult came out with their state by state tracking of Trump approval. He’s underwater almost everywhere. He’s down everywhere from a year ago.

And if the election were held today, he’d be blown out as a handful of states are solid GOP at this point.

Right now, there’s about 313 EVs that are solid/lean D, and just 123 that are solid/lean GOP. The tossups include NC, GA, FL, TX, and MT. In other words, this could go from bad to blowout in very short order.

How to ensure that happens: keep the hammer down on Trump and continue investigating him. Make sure people know he’s out to gut their health coverage and that they’re paying for his idiotic trade war.

AND GOTV! Every vote matters, and we need to make sure every vote counts.

Let’s be honest…there was not much more that Judge Berman-Jackson could have given Manafort that wouldn’t have made it a magnet for an judicial-bias appeal on the sentence alone, because of the fairly lenient sentence Judge Ellis had already given him.

Since a significant chunk of Manafort’s crimes are financial in nature, how hard can he be hit on the forfeiture front? If he gets tens of millions of dollars seized, that’s gotta hurt as much, if not more than the prison sentence.

Our system is broken, perhaps beyond repair. Of course, wealthy white men escaping justice is nothing new. It is infuriating beyond words that they routinely commit financial crimes but are never investigated because it’s too much work. Manafort should have been in prison years ago — Trump should have been in prison years ago — but they are not the exception, they are the rule. Leona Helmsley (of “only little people pay taxes” fame) only had to serve 19 months in prison, out of a 16 year sentence for income tax evasion. And she was caught because she stiffed contractors — a crime that Trump repeatedly committed with impunity.

According to the New York Daily News, the former New York City mayor was upbraided by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Michael Katz after he repeatedly interjected during his estranged wife Judith Nathan’s testimony during a progress hearing. During one such interjection, Giuliani reportedly shouted out that one of his wife’s claims was “bullshit!”

Judge Katz then implored: “Mr. Giuliani, don’t interrupt the proceeding. You have lawyers representing you. You’re not the lawyer.”

At one point during the hearing, Giulliani accused Nathan of hiding a bank account from him which contained a grand total of $100. Nathan’s lawyers claimed the undisclosed bank account was simply an oversight due to Giuliani’s re-routing of the couple’s mail.

In turn, Nathan accused Giuliani of failing to pay medical bills for the continued treatment of Nathan’s mother-who is confined to a nursing home-allegedly in violation of a previous court order.

Well, it is 2019:

Little people

So Manafort got off easy again?

No. He didn’t.

Today’s sentence was about 70% of what he could have gotten as a max. Within the sentencing guidelines to be sure.

Again, I would have thrown the book and gone with the max sentence on all the counts, but that’s me.

IMO, there are several contempt-of-court charges possible from the current proceedings.

Calling it ‘outdated,’ the Supreme Judicial Court in Massachusetts has eliminated a state legal principle that wiped out the murder conviction of former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez after his suicide.

‘The SJC has ruled that Aaron Hernandez’s conviction for the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd will stand,’ Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III said, per NBC Boston. ‘We are pleased justice is served in this case, the antiquated practice of vacating a valid conviction is being eliminated and the victim’s family can get the closure they deserve.’

I believe that makes it easier for the victims to go after his estate.

SCOTUS balance is a serious issue, but there’s a large amount of turnover on an annual basis that would allow a Dem president and Senate to re-balance the appellate and district courts.

As I understand it, there are several different classes of “Federal Judge”. Most classes are referred to by their Constitutional Article authorization. Mostly the talk has been on Article III court appointments.

And, as always, the information below is given in good faith, but I encourage all to verify.

Article I includes the United States Tax Court, the United States Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims, the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, the United States Court of Federal Claims, and the United States Court of Military Commission Review. The Trump administration has 7 confirmed and 9 nominated.

Article III includes the Supreme Court, the United States Courts of Appeals, the United States District Courts, and the United States Court of International Trade. There have been 91 confirmed and 62 nominations. I believe that there are 870 Article III judge positions of which there are currently 146 vacancies.

Article IV are Territorial courts. These are the District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands, the District Court of Guam, and the District Court of the Virgin Islands. So far none confirmed or nominated.

The VA rules of professional conduct concern the attorney-client interactions, and role of the lawyer, and there are rules around trial publicity (Rule 3.6). I don’t think they’d apply in this case, but Rule 4.1 addresses truthfulness.

The Principles of Professionalism also addresses truthfulness, so you could argue he violated the principles.

I very nearly moved to New Mexico, it was on my list of places…wound up in Germany on the Rhine…

Two of my siblings chose Germany, and they’ve seen New Mexico. Germany has an economy.

Do you get shaky hands, headaches and hallucinations when Twitter and Facebook go down?

No. I read a book. It’s on my iPhone so maybe that keeps the withdrawals down to a minimum.

Now if I lost my iPhone…that would send me into full panic mode.

I usually try not to go on about how beautiful it is around here because you’d think I was just doing the New Mexico thing about saying Land of Enchantment, or I was a braggart, or didn’t really have anything to talk about…but yesterday and today have been all about the fierce winds and ‘mixed precipitation’, including several types of frozen precip. Before sunset yesterday, there was a crack in the clouds to the west while it was snowing and blowing good, and I saw a snowbow. A fucking SNOWBOW. My new state slogan: FUCKING ENCHANTING

I saw a double rainbow last year. First time ever. And they were as clear and delineated as I have ever seen. But I was in traffic and couldn’t grab my phone to take an image. I was bummed…but I was safe. I got the memories.

Nice! Wish I could’ve seen that. What I have seen quite a lot here is cloud iridescence. We really do live in a beautiful place.

I have been told, however that enchantment means sand. :D

The most alarming thing about the Boeing 737 Max 8 debacle is learning that they’re in the habit of building passenger planes with autopilot systems that have a single point of failure. https://

What’s infuriating also is that American pilots have been reporting this problem for awhile; they were able to compensate and prevent a disaster but Boeing didn’t appear to issue any worldwide alert about this defect nor display any urgency to repair the defect. It is possible that they have been working on a correction since before the first crash but it took awhile to develop a sound fix. That still doesn’t excuse their failure to provide such a warning.

Correction was slowed by government shutdown. Got no source for that. Could have been wild speculation.

An acquaintance of mine had an IPhone that stopped working this weekend — and it actually caused his friends to go into panic mode. He was fine but he failed to show up for an important meeting and no one could get in touch with him. They were all fearing the worst when the problem was — he didn’t know anyone’s phone number to contact them and he failed to get to the meeting because the address was in his phone! I think this got resolved when someone visited his apartment and discovered him safe and sound.

Rachel mentioned that as a reason for the delay BUT Boeing should have told the world how to address this issue in the interim using the tricks from American pilots and thereby avert both catastrophes.

IIRC (but always a possibility not) - the issues with Boeing’s MCAS for the 737-800 surfaced after the Lion Air crash in Indonesia last year. Which was long-enough before the government shutdown to have at least let airlines know about the problem. Well, actually, to let them know about the MCAS in the first place - then that there might be problems with it - then, a warning and alternative actions to take. For everybody flying the aircraft.
“Malpractice” is the only word I can think of that covers this sort of situation. And even then it falls short….

When did the American pilots file their reports? Was it before or after the Lion crash? I was thinking they were before the crash but maybe not.

OK sorry to anyone eating lunch but fecal analysis is being looked at as just effective as colonoscopy. Might want to research the latest.
