Stories come and go so quickly. By this time next week, the college bribery scandal will be under the radar especially if it comes out that there are people tied to Trump involved.

A nation this large will always be complex, containing both good and bad, the greedy and altruistic, the noble and the profane, the honest and the dishonest. Trump personifies the worst elements of this strange melting pot. We will overcome him because there are more people who embody the better traits of our society. I firmly believe, even as cynical as I can be at times, that our best days are still ahead of us.

Things can turn around. I was really worried about my cat, Killer, who’s also 17. He’d been kind of doddering and slowing down for a while and then in the middle of January, he just stopped eating and would hide away somewhere (instead of having to be lying on me all the time like usual). He finally started coming out and eating a bite and getting a little water, but I thought we were going to lose him for sure. After a long time he started perking up, though, and now he’s back to normal, although it took him a week or so to remember how he used to behave. Do cats have strokes?

We developed a theory that the food we’d been giving him might have been the problem. His much-needed Purina One “For Sensitive Systems” has apparently been replaced with “For Healthy Skin and Sensitive Stomachs”, and he started going downhill, looking back on it, exactly when I bought a bag of the latter. Maybe whatever they put in there “For Healthy Skin” didn’t agree with him. Have to settle for “Indoor Advantage”, I guess, and see if he stays better.

we had to change dogfood back in December because the goofy coonhound had been suffering from a chronic yeast ear infection for more than a year, so we had to switch to a grain-free dogfood.

I’m guessing the food change isn’t the culprit. Just old age and dementia.

He’s failed almost everything he has done in his business life and ran out the escape hatch and left everyone else holding the bag.

He always talks tough, but has shown he wimps out and takes the easy out.

Let’s see how he handles this rebuke by his own party to see what kind of ‘nads he really has before we freak the hell out about him sending his monkeys out into the streets.

Besides, Mitch allowed the Senate to vote on the bill. Wasn’t he supposed to stop that from happening to protect Trump?

re: #42 Hecuba’s daughter

I’m going on commentary around the ‘net, etc., not the actuality of the process.

Many said that Republicans wouldn’t vote for it, the numbers were a surprise. Sure it is not majority proof, but it was as bipartisan as we have seen in a long time.

If there is any reason it was allowed to be voted on by Mitch it was because it wasn’t veto proof.

But then Mitch sort of hangs his own party’s senators out to dry by allowing the vote and the Trump base seeing who was against it.

Something political is going on here.

There won’t be mass violence. A few terrorist acts perhaps, but not en masse. Most people don’t have it in themselves to commit violence, particularly not when they are relatively privileged and comfortable, as Trumpers are.

Lawrence is not quite right though. Trumpers want to be as bad and criminal as he wants them to be. That’s the appeal of his rallies and indeed of this whole movement - the freedom to say your hate out loud and hurt the people you hate.

Speaking of golf. I see Phil Mickelson is caught up in the college admittance scam.

Saw it when I went to ESPN “Watch” to catch the opening practice of the first 2019 Formula 1 race in Australia. (Yay! A new season)

ESPN - Mickelson hired tutor firm, surprised by scheme

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida — PGA Tour golfer Phil Mickelson confirmed Thursday that he and his wife, Amy, hired William Singer and his for-profit college tutoring company to prepare their children for the college admission and selection process.

Mickelson, speaking after his opening round at The Players Championship, said everything was done above board, and that neither he nor his family ever made financial contributions to Singer’s The Key foundation.

“We, along with thousands of other families, hired he and his company to help guide us through the college application process,” Mickelson said. “We’re as shocked as everyone the last few days.”

Bernie seems to attract an audience based on very particular issues, issues that seem to not include the specific problems of people who are minorities.

I suspect that Bernie’s top people, maybe a few of them anyway, know that.

I do wonder how much projection Bernie gets, from followers who are creating an ideal “socialist” candidate from their own desires. This has a parallel in Trump, where religious right folk are imaging that Trump is God’s Chosen One when anyone who looks at the facts knows such an idea is absurd.

How A Georgia Teacher Won $10,000 By Reading The Fine Print
npr.org

When I got the contract, I printed it off and decided, certainly, to read the contract because I always read contracts and noticed this fabulous paragraph on the seventh page. In bold letters, it said, Pays to Read. And then the paragraph began to explain that they have a contest going on and that if I had actually read that far in the contract, I was one of maybe 1 percent - I think it said - of people who actually read contracts. And they wanted to change that. And so they were running a contest to actually win $10,000.

Rachel is doing some coverage on Connecticut’s Supreme Court’s decision in allowing the Sandy Hook families to sue Remington (Bushmaster).

The lawyer representing the families seems to be taking a similar approach as the lawyers and activists that took down big tobacco.

He is going after their marketing documents as he is trying to show they are selling a product that is against the law as it is being marketed as a military rifle that gives the owner military type response to any threat.

Internal studies and documents brought down tobacco.

Interesting tactic. This looks like something to really watch. The lawyer is pretty sharp.

Tee-shock. Hell of a language isn’t it?

The position of vowels after consonants inform the pronunciation of the consonant.

A vowel after an S turns the S in to an Sh. Examples:

Sean = Shon

Seamus = Shamus

Siobhan = Shivon

Oh, and in the last example, certain consonant combos are always consistent. A bh combo is always a soft v, not a vex, but a vh(schwa).

If you look at it, as printed in English, it would appear that it should be pronounced almost like German, with lots of glottals and harsh hard consonant dipthongs and triphongs. But it’s not. It’s quite melodic. As is, to a lesser degree, Scots Gaelic. Welsh is another world altogether. The other Gaelic languages are in Breton, Cornwall, and Galicia, in Spain.

Heh, Denver Post retracts its endorsement of Cory Gardner because of his vote today on the Trump emergency declaration. Gardner voted against it, supporting Trump. The paper says he is not the politician he sold himself as.

Denver Pols - Denver Post Retracts Endorsement of Cory Gardner

In October of 2014, the Denver Post delivered its much-anticipated endorsement in the red-hot U.S. Senate race between incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Udall and his Republican challenger Rep. Cory Gardner. The Post’s endorsement of Gardner in this race was delivered more or less on the assurance that Gardner would not represent a threat to the paper’s generally progressive editorial viewpoint, in particular abortion rights after Gardner had invested enormous time and effort living down his stridently anti-abortion record. After Gardner’s narrow win over Udall by less than two percentage points, many Democrats in Colorado took their frustration out on the Post by cancelling their subscriptions-contributing to the paper’s long and steady decline in circulation.

Today, in the wake of Gardner’s brazen about-face on support for President Donald Trump’s controversial national emergency declaration to obtain funds for a border wall without congressional approval, the Denver Post is taking the highly unusual if not unprecedented step of publicly repudiating their own 2014 endorsement of Gardner’s election. Even if you haven’t visited the Denver Post since October 14, 2014, stop what you’re doing and read this now:

We endorsed Sen. Cory Gardner in 2014 because we believed he’d be a statesman. We knew he’d be a conservative voice in Congress, to be certain, but we thought his voice would bring “fresh leadership, energy and ideas.”

We see now that was a mistake - consider this our resolution of disapproval…

Gardner was a never-Trumper in the primary who in recent months endorsed the president’s re-election campaign even as Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation continues to unveil the worst of this administrations web of lies and deceit. Tuesday’s vote was the last straw.

It’s not a perfect retraction-the Post called Gardner’s innumerable votes to repeal the Affordable Care Act “defensible,” which in the context of Gardner’s years-long caterwauling about Coloradans “losing their coverage” is simply ridiculous. There’s also an attempt to defend the paper’s endorsement last year of Rep. Mike Coffman, which tells us they’re still capable of being fooled in the exact same manner that Gardner fooled them in 2014. In the end the voters of CD-6 saw through Coffman’s deceptions where the Post didn’t.

But where Gardner is concerned, if there was any doubt that the shine has come off Colorado’s most ambitious and highest-ranking remaining Republican elected official, this un-endorsement puts it to rest. Gardner isn’t just vulnerable on paper in a state trending away from Gardner’s party. Gardner’s game is personally up.

I’ve been learning about the history of the Irish War of Independence and a lot of it was driven by the fact that the Irish wanted to preserve their culture which they felt was being erased by the British rule. A lot of people I think wrongly see Ireland’s history as being Catholic versus Protestant but a lot of the Easter Rising participant had Protestant family. A lot of Ireland’s most famous nationalists have in fact been Protestants. Robert Emmet, Charles Stewart Parnell, Theobald Wolfe Tone. and there are others too.

That’s not the way it is now, in Ireland. Almost every school is a dual English/Gaelic school. The pushback was in areas like Mayo, (my great grandfathers birthplace) where they didn’t want English taught. Smacked down. In another generation, Ireland will again be truly bilingual.

The language of the poets and the singers, the bards, will once again be understood by and sung by all of the population. That’s proper. That is something for which every country should strive, to embrace their past, and their present.

Scotland is striving to embrace their past language as well, whole universities dedicated to the old tongue. The trend is spreading. It’s a good thing.

Colonialism, in this day and age, should never be allowed to destroy the past. It doesn’t matter if it was the Roman Empire or the colonization of Africa, every culture and language should have relevance in the place of its birth.

Absolutely. And you know what, what I like about Celtic nationalism in Ireland and Scotland is there doesn’t seem to be much of a racial component to it. You just have to be interested in the culture and you’re golden. And hey Mayo, we’re cousins! Probably not lol but I agree with everything you’ve said here. But yeah I think it’s a great thing too because so much of that language and culture was lost when colonialism happening and you had things like the penal laws. Now if someone wants to know only English, that’s grand too but I love that in Ireland and Scotland, they’re having a revival.

Any commentary from this point on has to be about these subjects only:

Domestic terrorism,

Access to a weapon of mass destruction,

The lack of tracking of that weapon,

The laws that meant they couldn’t track that weapon,

Whether this individual was a reasonable threat to the Mosque that he just attacked.

If any combination of these questions resulted in a failure of security, then the Government needs to act and ensure this never happens again.
