Update from last threads breaking news of Alt-Right Terrorism:

‘No one in NZ must go to a mosque under any circumstances,’ says police commissioner

Police commissioner Mike Bush has warned: “No one in the country must go to a mosque under any circumstances.”

It appears the bastard is Australian. New Zealand is our closest ally and friend, and this will be a dark day in Australia as well.

I mean, it is not unheard of this kind of people having all sort of fantasies, such as being member of a “New PCCTS”, like Fjotolf Hansen (a.k.a. Andrew Berwick, a.k.a. Anders Behring Breivik).

Difficult, but not impossible.

As I recall, Breivik travelled to Czech Republic in an attempt to acquire weaponry for his attack. The local organized crime groups dismissed him, figuring (correctly, it turned out) that he had some malicious reasons behind him (that’s what was reported in the Czech media after the attack); one member of a Czech organized crime gang was said to have told the police something to the effect that they figured “something wasn’t right with this guy (Breivik)”.

It’s been speculated that Breivik probably let slip what he was planning to do and the local organized crime groups didn’t want to end up connected to a massacre as of course, that brings the heat down on them.

And there is an ugly specter lurking. There have been some sources saying that Breivik attended an rightoid training camp in Byelorussia or the Russian Federation. And there is some organization which to this day hold such training camps in the area.

I assume the Post is the local paper with a conservative editorial board?

On another note… I find it interesting that endorsements of Republicans still include a bit about “ideas”. I think the conservative movement is at the same place the liberal movement was in the mid to lates 70s - wholly without ideas to face the challenges of the moment (and instead offering mostly the same solutions that they had for decades). The progressive/liberal movement seems to have ideas and policies to face the challenges of today. The conservative movement hasn’t had a new idea in a solid 15 years.

To me anyhow, the conservative movement refuses to acknowledge that we live in the 21st century. That at the core is heart of their problems.

How many more tragedies like #Christchurch do we need before we recognize this is the inevitable consequence of Islamphobia, racism, race - baiting, fearmongering & demonising refugees & immigrants by politicians & Murdoch media. This is the human cost, we must learn from it.

Murdoch infects everything he touches; but this evil existed before Murdoch. After all, Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and the WSJ editorial page were at work before Murdoch became a major player here.

Yeah. I mean I get that respect for some traditions isn’t bad but conservatives right now think it’s still 1950 and every left winger is a commie. But to be blunt, they’ve gotten worse. There’s no excuse for their party being more socially right wing than Ford and Goldwater were into their 90’s.

I made my point on the previous thread. What happened in NZ has direct relevance to the gun control debate in this country.

We are, as a nation, are fundamentally insane in how we relate to firearms in our society. Back in the day, we had shotguns and rifles to shoot food.

Now, we accept a weapon that was used to kill innocent worshippers in a mosque in New Zealand as normal. And a Temple in Pittsburgh.

I’m off to bed. This must stop.

TBF I think a lot of Catholic Democrats used to do that and I suspect that still may be how prominent Democratic Catholic men like Tim Kaine and Bob Casey feel. TBH my position on choice is pretty simple. I’m a man. I’m not going to be carrying around a child. I won’t judge a woman for a choice she makes with her own body but I do want to reduce abortions by reducing unwanted pregnancies in the first place and we do that by encouraging birth control and not slut shaming women who do get pregnant. And we also don’t act like rapists are doing a “good thing” by getting women pregnant. Children are great. I love my niece dearly but I would never want to force my SiL or my niece when she’s older to carry her pregnancy and that’s what dipshits on the right will never get.

Yeah I know we had our flaws but I really thought we could really kick things in the right direction. I’m sad to say I no longer feel that way. I find myself wondering about my niece and the younger children of my cousins. My niece is aware of her multicultural background. Yesterday was her birthday and she tried teaching my Grandmother “Feliz Cumpleanos”. I hope that’s how her world becomes. Not that we deny our differences. I’ve never liked people who try to tell you “I’m colorblind.” I try to be color and culturally aware which is why I like educating myself about other cultures and people.

And remember Murdoch formed Fox in the Clinton years. Coulter was around before then but she didn’t really become a household name until W was President and if memory serves, the WSJ Ed board began going hard right when Rupert bought em. True about Rush tho.

re: #66 Hecuba’s daughter

The WSJ editorial columns were to the right of Attila the Hun years before the Murdoch purchase in 2007. Their unrelenting dishonest attacks against Clinton and Dukakis before then were a disgrace.

It was the actual news arm of the WSJ that was respectable before Murdoch bought them out and turned it into just another propaganda organ overall. The editorial board was always a right-wing nuthouse.

Absolutely. And you know what, it’s such a shame because I think it could really be a great thing. Here I am chatting with you across the continent. I’m able to chat with my friends and family all around the world on FB. I love that but I also know that same technology can connect assohles too in ways they never were before but telephones and TV and radio did the same thing last century.

There’s a lot of aspects to the terribleness of comment sections. The fact that they’re mostly anonymous, that they’re mostly ignored, and that there’s rarely real world consequences to being an asshole online.

As far as connecting terrible people, just remember that they are still the outliers. Most people are good and decent. They might be a bit too caught up in their own problems, but they’re not actively seeking to make the world a worse place. Reactionaries rarely have staying power (because they rarely have answers), and I believe they may have already not only reached their zeineth but are already beginning to ebb

She is trying to take preemptive action to prevent any association with this crime. The Covington suit does show that the Covington children are being raised as dishonest entitled thugs. Candace must be considered in the same category. Instead of expressing her horror at the crime, she threatens a lawsuit. It is impossible to be a decent human being and to be a full-fledged member of the Trump-supporting clan.

Mostly, I’m tired of people being ugly to each other. I’m tired of all the pain I feel and hear in the world every day. There’s too much of it. 20 years later that movie still gets to me whether it’s the DP and the possibility of executing an innocent or how Coffey got how cruel the world could be to each other. It is especially shocking to see that there have been 4 arrests and Kiwi police have not ruled out that there might be more. They might just be accomplices the cops have rounded up, but 2 different locations in about the same time-frame suggests that they might be active perpetrators. If so, this is a major escalation in RWNJ violence, almost unprecedented.

While NZ has overall stricter gun control than the US it’s pretty goddamned lax by global standards. Getting an AR is comparatively difficult but not impossible and, weirdly, silencers are completely unregulated.

Look at that picture and think, “Jesus Christ, idiot! Finger outside the trigger guard!”

Which relieves me a bit. If they’re that bad about firearm safety they’ll likely be that bad about tactics, strategy, operational security and logistics.

Yeah. I know the four first commandments by heart.

I. Always assume the weapon is loaded until you have verified yourself.
II. Never point the weapon at anything you do not intend to put a hole into.
III. Be aware of what is behind and around your intended target.
IV. Do not put your finger on the trigger until you are prepared to fire.

I’m one of those the alt-right terrorist enablers call a Gun-grabbing libtard. And I know those four basic rules.
Sheesh.

New Zealand police have conducted a controlled detonation at Auckland’s largest train station, the Britomart Transport Centre.

The bomb squad attended the station 40 minutes ago, and cordoned off the area. Just minutes ago an explosion was heard. Authorities told local media it was a controlled detonation.

New Zealand in shock after climate change minister attacked on way to parliament

The New Zealand climate change minister has been attacked while walking to Parliament House, the first physical assault on a politician in the country in more than 10 years.

James Shaw, who is also the joint leader of the Greens party, was outside the Botanic Gardens in the capital Wellington at 7.30am on Thursday when he was assaulted by an unknown man.

A spokesperson for the Green party said Shaw was grabbed and punched in the face, in an unprovoked attack that has shocked MPs and the wider public. The attacker referred to Shaw by name.

Another update from that earlier Ardern press conference - the number of people in custody is currently three. Earlier in the day, police said they had four people in custody. There was no further information provided as to why that number changed.

Could have simply been a mistake by the person originally releasing the info.

On second reading, I have to disagree with your assessment. Even the worst of the “Freedom Caucus” would never stand up in the wake of a shooting at a mosque and suggest that not only did the victims deserve their fate for the “crime” of being Muslims, but go on to suggest that any who identify as Muslim are valid targets for violence. This is a brand of hate that, shocking as it may be to say in this day and age, still seems to be something the worst Republicans are hesitant to say out loud.

The tactical plan for the American hate-right, to respond to this terrorist attack, went out quickly.

From Donnie Jr. to Ben Shapiro, the mantra is “don’t mention his name”.

What they want to do, of course, is make sure people don’t find his manifesto and that he credits Donald Trump for making him bring to importance the idea of ethnic nationalism.

Still, that the plan went out so quickly (that Loesch, Shapiro, DonnieJr. etc.) really does illustrate how they coordinate their propaganda war on America.

Update:

Here are the key points from the New Zealand police commissioner press conference:

49 people were killed in the attack, including 41 at Deans Avenue mosque and seven at Linwood mosque. Another victim died in hospital.
A man in his late 20s has been charged with murder and will appear in Christchurch court tomorrow.
Two others arrested at the scene with guns are being investigated. A fourth person arrested may have had nothing to do with the attack.
Several guns have been recovered from both mosques. Two explosive devices were found on two vehicles at the scene. One has been disabled.
The suspects were unknown to the police.
The police remain vigilant but are not looking for anyone else in connection with the attacks.

The report needs correcting. During the presentation the commissioner corrected himself and said both IEDs were found on one vehicle. The wording was a but ambiguous.

She’s not the only one engaging in stochastic terrorism - Trump takes an oversized amount of the blame for that. Why? Because he’s done more to normalize white nationalism, white supremacy, and the far right xenophobic agenda than any other major public figure in the world.

Other right wing extremists are keying off him. And he’s already equated goddamned Nazis with the people protesting them. He equated the Nazi who murdered Heather Heyer with the people who were protesting those Nazis.

Trump repeatedly demonizes Muslims and repeats anti Semitic tropes. This works its way into the right wing lexicon and Fox spreads it, as does all the lower levels of the right wing ecosphere online. This is no accident.

These are purposeful decisions to demonize minorities and nonwhites (and women).

The consequences are deadly - as we again witness in Christchurch, where at least 49 Muslims were murdered by right wing terrorists who singled out 2 mosques to carry out their manifesto - and livestreamed for all to see.

I’ve caught a few tweets alleging that a woman who looks like Melania, but who isn’t Melania, has appeared with Trump several times recently. Not sure if I can take them seriously. One side-by-side comparison suggested the fake Mel was shorter than the real one by a few inches, but the image for “the real Mel” had her standing closer to the camera than Donald, thus looking as tall as he, but “the fake Mel” was standing alongside him, and looking shorter than Donald.

OTOH, this administration is so consumed with image over substance, that replacing Melania with a “stunt double” would not be at all surprising.

Alephnaught  Mar 15, 2019 • 7:06:59am

We might want to be careful about that manifesto. There appears to be a fair bit of misdirection in it. See the linked article in this tweet:

But this manifesto is a trap itself, laid for journalists searching for the meaning behind this horrific crime. There is truth in there, and valuable clues to the shooter’s radicalization, but it is buried beneath a great deal of, for lack of a better word, “shitposting”.

Shitposting is the act of throwing out huge amounts of content, most of it ironic, low-quality trolling, for the purpose of provoking an emotional reaction in less Internet-savvy viewers. The ultimate goal is to derail productive discussion and distract readers. [The Manifesto] is a clear and brutally obvious example of this technique.

In his manifesto, Brenton credits far-right personality Candace Owens with beginning his radicalization. He states that, “Each time she spoke I was stunned by her insights and her own views helped push me further and further into the belief of violence over meekness. Though I will have to disavow some of her beliefs, the extreme actions she calls for are too much, even for my tastes.”

[…]

It is possible, even likely that the author was a fan of Owens’s videos: she certainly espouses anti-immigrant rhetoric. But in context seems likely that his references to Owens were calculated to spark division, and perhaps even violence, between the left and the right. At multiple points in the manifesto the author expresses the hope that his massacre will spark further attempts at gun control in the United States, which he believes will lead to gun confiscation and a civil war. He believes this civil war would be the best opportunity destroy the American “melting pot”. This idea is repeated often enough that it seems to be something the author legitimately believes in.

Given the tone surrounding the Candace Owens passage, it seems clear that it was “bait”, thrown out to attract attention on social media and sow further political division.

All those who thought Mueller was wrapping up in February, and now March have been talking out their ass. The filings make it clear Mueller’s still got a lot of work ahead of him.

I have not read the shooter’s manifesto, but caught some snips of it here and there. Within the cryptocurrency circles, some noticed that he mentions he had made some good money with Bitconnect.

Bitconnect was a massive ponzi scheme that purported to be a cryptocurrency scheme. It collapsed in early 2018, and many people lost millions of dollars as a result. Shooter guy could have been one of the guys near the top of the pyramid.

Or the bottom, creating a “fuck it, kill everyone, I have nothing, might as well go to prison or die” mentality.

And those indicted include dozens of Russian companies/individuals as foreign agents.

It doesn’t include the Cohen saga and all the spinoff investigations either.

Real life, 1994 NM:

[…]

Originally, the county commission considered an ordinance requiring gun ownership. That got watered down after some locals complained such an ordinance would be as repressive as forbidding gun ownership.

[…]

“Citizens are getting tired of being tossed around and pushed to the limit by regulations,” said Carl Livingston, a county commissioner. “We want the Forest Service to know we’re prepared, even though violence would be a last resort.” At a meeting of the county chamber of commerce recently, Forest Service District Ranger Mike Gardner urged caution. “What are you guys arming against?” he asked. “A .30-.30 won’t do any good against (U.S. government) Bradley fighting vehicles and attack helicopters.”

This makes me laugh:

But is the United States ready for O’Rourke’s teenage exploits?

He’ll clean up his past by photoshopping an ‘L’ into his old band’s name, FLoss.

The days when you could post a text file full of Scientology’s secret scriptures on a file server in Beijing and bring down China’s internet pipe to the world are long gone. But they were *fun*.

Must have just happened, It was just a page with a big red white and blue star of David, a short one paragraph spiel about how millennial Jews were fed up with “Leftist” democrat policies blah blah blah, a link to a short bio on their spokesmodel Elizabeth Pipko, and a contact us form.

Oh man, does this bring back memories-Beto O’Rourke was a member of the Cult of the Dead Cow, an early hacktivism group!

I don’t have the time to dig into it, but I wonder what direct connections there are between this thinking and NRA money to the politicians floating this dangerous legislation?

The NRA needs to be taken out. It is time to make that organization go away. It is for the good of the country. Bury it is history with the knowledge of what it did to this country.

“It’s a black man with an AR-15! Shoot him!”

That is not the NRA’s problem. They sold the gun and got what they wanted.

If Jeb feels that way. He should run against him or advise someone who will.

No one is clapping for Jeb.

They shouldn’t have to close; rather they should be protected by armed guards. I’d be first in line to volunteer if I lived in Christchurch. Because that city’s got a lot of living up to do to get to that name.

I also see them doing it in solidarity: if they are telling people not to go to Mosques, they are going to stay away from the Temple.
