So does Trump’s statement that “THIS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN TO A PRESIDENT AGAIN” mean that no Congress should ever do anything but approve whatever a “President” demands? This is what a CEO expects in running a private company: they demand and they expect to be obeyed. They are absolute autocrats. Let’s hope our remaining institutions are strong enough to prevent him from ruining our nation forever.

Pretty sure the Constitution says each State runs their elections however they like, picks their electors however they like. As long as all the candidates are subject to the same rules, the State can impose these conditions.

I went back to look at the Constitution itself — and it certainly appears that a State can do whatever it wants for candidates. What are the federal laws applicable to Presidential elections?

It turns out that the murder of mob boss Paul Cali was not a mob hit. Rather, it involved a woman, to wit:

The mafia didn’t kill Gambino boss Francesco “Franky Boy” Cali — a Staten Island knucklehead with a personal beef over a woman did, police and sources say.

Anthony Comello, a 24-year-old non-mobster who lives with his parents and works odd construction jobs, was in custody in a New Jersey jail and expected to face murder charges in connection to the killing of Cali, 53, police said Saturday.

*snip*

The real motive? Sources now believe Cali hadn’t liked Comello hanging around a particular woman in the mob boss’s family — and the younger man was so outraged by this slight, he slaughtered one of the most dangerous mafioso in Staten Island to get revenge.

Comello was arrested before the ire of the entire Gambino organization could thunder his way, but only thanks to his own alleged ineptitude.

In a fleeting gesture that Comello may now have a lifetime in prison to regret, he had picked up and handed to Cali a fallen license plate moments before allegedly opening fire.

nypost.com

The license plate had his fingerprints, and the guy had gotten a gun permit and his prints were on file.

Comello is probably lucky the cops got to him first, before the mob.

With no winner, Powerball jackpot soars to $550 million

Statistically, you only have a one in 292.2 million chance of winning the big prize. But if you were to beat the long odds and hit the jackpot, you’d have an important decision to make: cash or annuity.

Not a good description.

Rather, permutationally, each play has a one in 292.2 million chance of winning.

The probability of you winning depends upon how many unique plays you buy per draw.

Furthermore, statistically, the history of numbers drawn in PowerBall are very uneven across the field and at first glance would not appear random. Because there are only about 104 draws per year, and 69 whiteballs and 26 red powerballs, the actual data will make for a very uneven distribution at least until many thousands of draws have been done and the law of large numbers comes into play.

For example, one of the whiteballs last night was 34. 34 has come up several times in the lottery draws the past few months, much more often than one might naively calculate as possible randomly.

Some of the various state lottery websites have sections on “hot” and “cold” numbers.

The reason people believe in such things (and thus why the state lottery commissions willingly play into these delusions) is because in fact when looking at a limited number of draws it appears as if the number selection is not random.

There really are periods of perhaps months when a certain number comes up many times, while a few other numbers come up not at all.

This is how the universe works.

The rise of jackpot values this year are taking longer than the big jackpots last year.

And it’s not due to interest rates. Indeed, it’s the sales that are slower.

I don’t know if Americans are lotteried-out or not, but games do go stale.

Maybe because there is no positive reward for buying even a bunch of tickets. For example, one can correctly pick two white balls and yet there is no prize for that.

I just sit here and wonder about these fuckheads in NZ.

I am left wanting to cry. Nothing more.

I served 16 years in the US Army, ready to give everything at the slightest notice, during that time. In the end I only quit because I couldn’t do the job of an Infantry NCO any more so I walked away with my Honorable discharge. This evil SOB is everything I have fought against my entire life. I still stand ready in my oath to the US Constitution to defend it against all enemies, foreign and domestic, with no regard for myself. If I see these right wing scum here, I will go down fighting.

Some times it is really that simple. The fascists must be stopped for freedom to survive. If that costs us our lives, so what? Our grandchildren’s lives depend on us stomping these scum into the ground, just as we did in 1945. We must fight for freedom for everyone one who is H. Sapiens Sapiens.

Also, I’ve noticed that the HGTV series My Lottery Dream Home must be scraping bottom to get new episodes.

One recent episode featured a return of a previous winner, but because she’s changing her life situation (getting back together with an old boyfriend), they decided to have the host David Bromstad come back for another visit, to find a new living situation.

And in last Friday’s episode the show didn’t even have a lottery winner. Instead they featured a young professional gambler from Vegas, who won $320k in a poker tournament. So in the show he asks David to help find his family a home, in the range of $500k, which means the house is more expensive than his winnings.

Which means the show has just become a real estate propaganda tool. The show always was, but at least it was the tool of the lottery industry first, now it isn’t even that.

And btw, the house shopping in the last episode was sort of sad, just looking at tract houses in west Las Vegas on tiny lots with tiny yards, all beige duplicates of houses in the hundreds if not thousands.

So the “Lottery Dream Home” is now down to a Levittown cracker box.

re: #55 wheat-dogg, raker of forests, master of steam

The state lotteries now push “scratchers” because people like them better than the draw lotteries.

Besides offering instant reward, the high priced scratchers, at least here in California, give you about a one in ten or twelve chance of winning.

Now “winning” in most cases is just another scratcher, but the positive feedback of winning keeps the customer coming back.

The draw games are fading slowly. The changing of the number of balls in Powerball and MegaMillions a couple of years ago was intended to make the jackpot a little harder to hit, thus making the jackpot when hit bigger.

That worked, and indeed the won jackpots are larger and because of that get a lot of publicity.

This publicity is intended to drive people to buy more tickets.

However, ticket sales have declined, as I noted before, in favor of scratchers.

So your every-day gambler who might want to spend a few bucks a day on gambling goes buy a scratcher.

All this ends up meaning that the lotteries don’t raise as much revenue as hoped for their intended target (here in California the money goes to Kindergarten - community college.)

To no one’s surprise:

Brexit: Jeremy Corbyn indicates he could vote leave in a new referendum on Britain’s EU membership

This of course has been one of the problems all along. The opposition party is fine with leaving, the in-power Tories in-fight about leaving.

There is no significant party that is the remain party, even if at least half the country wants to remain in the EU.

May’s predecessor messed up big time, May is incompetent, and Corbyn is one of those wants-to-be-cerebral-but-also-everyman types that has some not-well-formed idea that if only the UK was not in the EU then the UK would be a labor paradise.

Given our own dysfunction I guess we have nothing to stand on when it comes to politics in the UK, but I hope the Brits figure this one out.

We all know the problems with headline writers. But some are worse than others:

Neil deGrasse Tyson Back With Nat Geo After Network Completes Assault Investigation

Tyson was not accused of “assault” and IIRC one of the two women who complained about him explicitly said that the situation did not rise to the level of “assault”.

Tyson was accused of trying to use his prominence/power to seduce. While I agree that men in power ought not do that, it is not “assault”.

The problem with men in power trying to use that to seduce women is that women feel if they turn down such men then the glass ceiling becomes even harder to break through.

71
freetoken  Mar 17, 2019 • 4:10:18am

Gizmodo does better:

Neil deGrasse Tyson Will Return to TV After Sexual Misconduct Investigation

Four different women have accused Tyson of sexual misconduct. Former University of Texas at Austin classmate Tchiya Amet El Maat has said that Tyson drugged and raped her in 1984, while Bucknell University in Pennsylvania physics and astronomy professor Katelyn Allers said that Tyson inappropriately touched her at an American Astronomical Society gathering in 2009. Ashley Watson, an assistant to Tyson on the Cosmos series, said she quit her job after Tyson made unwelcome sexual advances. BuzzFeed News reported a fourth woman has said Tyson approached her while drunk at a 2010 American Museum of Natural History party, making sexual jokes and asking her to meet him alone in his office.

The first accusation (which is definitely assault) is the most serious but apparently the investigators must have dismissed it. The other three are case of impropriety (if true), but apparently either the investigators dismissed them or found that they were not serious enough to merit further action.

72
freetoken  Mar 17, 2019 • 4:11:38am

The DUP (whose social stands are more similar to creationists here in the US) are going to have an increasingly hard time as Brexit makes it clear that NI will have a hard boundary with the RoI, given what the atavists in UK politics (the Brexiteers) are intending.

Gillibrand, and some of the other Dems, seem to have a real weakness, in that they are used to their own electorate, a little corner of the larger American landscape, and have not cultivated a national image.

Now running for President is one way to get a national image, but just ask the rent-is-too-damn-high guy how far that will take you.

Gillibrand also seems to be a bit superfluous for the Dem race, given the likes of Klobuchar and Harris, both of whom have positioned themselves to be the go-to candidates for issues that Gillibrand may want to carve out.

I’m a constituent here in upstate NY. I’ve voted for her. I think she’s been a decent Senator, and sometimes even a very good one, especially when it comes to opposing Trump’s nominees.

I’m sure she’d be a decent president, and if she rises to the top of the nomination process, I’ll gladly vote for her over any Republican.

But having said that, I don’t see why she’s running or what she thinks she brings to the table that’s going to make her a better choice than the others who are running.

Her story about moving from the right edge of the party (when she represented a red district in the House) to and beyond the center? A true one… but way too nuanced for the bare-knuckled nomination race right now. And there are still too many questions about her role in the Franken resignation.

I should be right in her campaign’s sweet spot here in western NY, which looks a lot like Michigan or Wisconsin electorally. But she’s at very best second tier for me, and more likely third. I’d much rather see her stay focused on building seniority in the Senate.

You can ask people how the little rubber balls remember what they did last month. It might get people thinking a little bit.

A long time ago, just from watching the State Lotto here, and how there kept being these statistically extremely unlikely runs with no winner to drive the jackpot up—and almost no short runs that would be more believable—I decided that they picked one number to have the computer hand out at a much higher than random rate and made that ball ever-so-slightly larger, so it wouldn’t fit in the chute. Then when they decided the jackpot was big enough, they’d go back to a normal-sized ball for that number. Of course, sometimes somebody who picked their own numbers would screw them up, but most people just let the computer pick the numbers for them. I wouldn’t buy a ticket until I thought they were ready for a winner. I was right about that quite often, but unfortunately wrong about the numbers.

Every run of lottery numbers is extremely statistically unlikely, with the same unlikeliness. What we humans are looking for are ones that “look” random, which tend to mean that they’re more or less evenly distributed but not exactly so. If you don’t want people to pick the same numbers as you, I guess you should try 1-2-3-4-5-6. It’s as likely to win as any other, but try convincing anybody of that.

And it could have just as easily turned the other way for him. If the Kavanaugh confirmation vote hadn’t been the hot button just before the election, things might not have turned so badly for Heitkamp in ND or McCaskill in MO. Florida only went R because of the usual voter suppression and election board mischief. And Beto was just heartbreakingly close.

With higher presidential-year voter turnout in 2020 and a less favorable map, it’s hard to imagine the Senate going as well for the Rs next year.

IMO let’s face it. We need another extraordinarily capable person to take on the job of fixing what can be fixed post-Trump/Brexit etc. The job will require political genius, broad support and the vigor one has when young. Pressure from all angles, long days, lives, perhaps nations at stake.

And it will take someone capable of convincing others to do it. This problem is too big for “I can” or “They can because we elected them.”

Sad thing is, the Democrats need her in the Senate like they need every vote, so when she (or Sanders) goes off on a tangent she is not harshly criticized.

For all the legitimate concerns about over militarization and neoconservative war mongering, blaming that on the need to focus on Putin’s ties to Trump is downright silly.

She’s in the House not the Senate and she thankfully is leaving.

The family legend is that Bubbie’s parents only bought tickets as far as Belfast & planned to stow away for the voyage to New York, but they were discovered and thrown off the ship. The actual truth is that Bubbie’s uncles were already settled in Belfast & send for her parents to join them from the Holy Land. Then Bubbie returned to Jerusalem when it was time for her to marry.

Family legends are fascinating aren’t they? We actually don’t know too much about the Irish born ones in my line I think sadly since my Dad’s Nana died when my Nana was so little.

Which have the same likelihood of winning as any other batch of numbers… but if it were to win, the payout would be low because it would be split between a great many people.

And that is why “my” numbers (which I’ve never played and probably never will) are 30 31 32 33 34 35. Once you get a number past 31 you’ve eliminated people who play using dates (birthdays, anniversaries, whatever) And practically no one plays consecutive numbers, because if you know they’re just as likely to win as any other group you are more numerate than most lottery players. And if you’re playing just for fun, well, they’re less fun.

I’ve condensed the argument in my mind to one about leadership. We need to nominate the best leader, period. Not the best policy wonk or the best representative of a key part of our coalition.
A leader combines policy knowledge, process savvy, charisma, honesty, energy, steadfastness, inspiration, pragmatism, excellent staffing instincts, the ability to run a successful campaign, and more.
My top tier so far are the folks for me with the best leadership profiles, some of which are gut feelings still. Gillibrand, for example, is missing a spark I can’t articulate well. I’m liking Harris and Booker a lot. And after early age-based skepticism, Warren is really growing on me.
I’m not there yet on O’Rourke, Klobucher, Castro, or my own Gov. Inslee. I’m a no on Sanders, Hickenlooper, Gabbard.
Biden? Hmmm. I don’t see it, but let’s see how he positions himself if he joins and how he treats the other candidates.

The Alt-right and the modern media discourse have managed to make Fascism and White Supremacism appear as merely points along the political spectrum, and not something totally against America and everything it has stood for and fought against.

White Supremacism is definitely made in America. We fought a terrible Civil War over slavery but the defeated never gave up their views and were allowed to exercise them after Reconstruction ended. The fantasy version of America has us standing up for equal rights for all — and many in this nation did so — but the evil has always lived here from our founding as a nation and has still not been extirpated from our nation.

The fact that Jefferson was writing “All men are created equal” while owning people as slaves is part of our history. It is not to defame our Founders but rather acknowledge their contradictions. I can’t give Jefferson or Washington a pass for owning slaves. I don’t think evil is the right word for them but I do think the fact that many Presidents owned slaves prior to the 13th amendment is certainly part of our history. We need to deal with our history in a way that acknowledges that those we see as heroes and almost God like did some pretty shit stuff.

any Democrat who stands a good chance of turning a Senate seat should try for that, and sit out the presidential race. There’s more than enough capable D presidential candidates, but not enough for the Senate. And that’ll be super-important.

Trump only retained the Senate because of the map. He’s not a genius or understands the nation. He’s been lucky.

That’s partly true but not completely. Trump was a genius in framing the Kavanaugh debacle; he single handedly saved the Kavanaugh nomination which was going down in flames and managed to persuade enough Americans that Kavanaugh was their innocent son or innocent spouse. We keep on underestimating his skill in promoting the worst in people and ideas and getting them approved by enough people to secure his continuation in office.

Was that Trump or the fact that the GOP majority in the Senate did that. Because a lot of voters I talked to when I door-knocked weren’t too happy with the Kavanaugh situation. Maybe we do underestimate him but I think we overestimate some of what has happened being him rather than circumstance.

I dunno guys. I just think yeah Trump may be does get underestimated but I do think in zeal to warn against underestimating him, he is sometimes over-estimated. The emergency is rightfully seen as a sham. The shutdown didn’t go well either. He hasn’t consistently polled above 50%. I have seen no signs that Trump will be getting significant support from people who didn’t support him last time. It’s not in the bag. I’d be a fool if I said it was but the worry to me isn’t about being able to defeat Trump, it’s about being able to prevent the elements that made Trump viable in the first place from being viable again in the 20’s.

Speaking as someone with sisters, aunts, and a niece-nephew combo twinsets, sometime twinship confers a bonus ability to speak about oneself, with pride, humility, or any other angle one sees as opportune (and/or sincere). Can make it tough to maintain a low profile, which can be particularly frustrating without the cooperation of the other twin. The Castros seem to be on a similar path to each other’s.

I bet the Union President was unwilling to lie that Trump brought jobs back. He uses the bully pulpit of the POTUS to go after individuals who displease him. Obama didn’t do that. Bush for all his failings and there are many didn’t.

my preferences:

any Democrat who stands a good chance of turning a Senate seat should try for that, and sit out the presidential race. There’s more than enough capable D presidential candidates, but not enough for the Senate. And that’ll be super-important.

So Stacy Abrams, Beto O’Roarke, Hickenlooper… please.

Chance of Beto beating Cornyn: 0.

Chance of Castro beating Cornyn if Beto is VP: Slightly greater than zero.

re: #190 HappyWarrior

Was that Trump or the fact that the GOP majority in the Senate did that. Because a lot of voters I talked to when I door-knocked weren’t too happy with the Kavanaugh situation. Maybe we do underestimate him but I think we overestimate some of what has happened being him rather than circumstance.

Kavanaugh got saved because the leak about the assault changed the story from Kavanaugh’s unseemly finances to he-said-she-said, which was lost because 1) there wasn’t enough evidence, and 2) he’s a Republican and gets a huge pass for that.

re: #201 BlueGrl21

Yep, he’s one of the only people I know who might pull it off. Young Democrat, liberal enough but not too far for Texas, Hispanic, charismatic. His name recognition will go up over time. He has a better chance than Beto did because he may be the thing that finally gets the Hispanic community to vote here. I hope.

And I think too many people discount “running twice for the same spot” effect. Texas has had it’s share of those people over the years, running for Governor for instance, and they are jokes, though they get enough people to get on the ballot.

[tinfoil]Right after there is an attack designed to pin the blame on Muslims but in reality perpetrated by his homeboys?[/tinfoil]

I don’t know how many of y’all notice how when something like Oslo/Utöya or Christchurch and other places happens, every RWNJ on the block tries to pin it on “Islamic Terrorism”. I was in a RWNJ infested chat, and I realized as the reports of shootings going down on Utöya that we were dealing with a reich winger…

The scariest part of the latest group of attacks during the past 6 months or so that have been traced to white nationalists is how people are blaming the victims, or even openly praising the perpetrators. It literally sickens me that I can see politicians posting a statement after Friday’s racist murders with a one-sentence condemnation of violence, then filling the entire page with rhetoric about how Muslim “invaders” are somehow polluting the nation and deserve to be driven out forcefully.

How long before Trump actually praises the Christchurch murderer(s)? Remember, the reason that Pirro got pulled from FoxNews was because of her saying that it was the Muslims’ fault for being killed by simply living there, and she hasn’t been alone in that belief.

Been saying for years now, women are the future of politics.

As a male, I am totally ready for that change. Too many men are in it for themselves for power and money not for helping the country and its people.

Men need to lose that power to equalize the world for a bit.

We need nature and nurture now more than ever. Women will want health and a clean world…and a lot of men to shut the fuck up and take a seat.

In our case, a lot of the women are coming from historically under or unrepresented communities. Deb Haaglan and Sharice Davids are great examples of that as is AOC, Omar, Tlaib, and others. I’m excited. They have new perspectives that our Congress will benefit from.

I say it like this: Given any single group of people the proportion of idiots and criminals would be about the same as any other group. The benefit from treating all groups equal is that you increase the available pool of well qualified and talented people to solve whatever problem needs to be solved.

If Trump said he wanted to legalize marijuana it would be interesting to watch who all would do back flips to support him, evangelicals, old white Republican politicians in red states, border state sheriffs…Jeff Sessions.

The problem with Trump legalizing abortion marijuana is that it would make it harder to target brown people. I’m pretty sure it would get an “On further review” from him.

Edited: Edited, it would probably apply to abortion as well

To get balance you have to have a transition period where the favored get the message by being removed. Then the new power fills in and the old power group is forced to come back under new terms and in a new environment.

Like all things human, there are cycles. Old mostly conservative white men have had that power for too long, and they won’t change until they lose it.

I want women to help them lose it, so that if they want back in, they are forced to change and come back in a different political climate. Then you get back to some balance.

Of course, it will all repeat in time, but we need that change and new balance for some major changes in how this country is governed and who benefits.
