Alabama bill would allow tax refunds to fund border wall

The Alabama Senate has moved forward a bill that would allow Alabamians to donate part of their state tax refunds to help build a border wall with Mexico.

Senators voted 23-6 Thursday to approve the bill by Republican Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh.

Alabama does not have a border with Mexico, but potential donors probably don’t know that.

WTF?
DoubleTree hotel apologizes after posting sign refusing service to military members

The DoubleTree hotel in Colorado Springs, Colo., has fired multiple employees after they refused service to military personnel and their guests at a post-deployment celebration at the hotel.

“Two Supervisor-level employees, who have since been terminated, made poor decisions including displaying a sign that they created, which we find very offensive,” Daniel Kammerer, the hotel branch’s general manager, said in a statement earlier this month.

“Their actions were in no way associated with the values of the hotel management.”

How the hell would this even work, legally? Alabama just remits the money to the U.S. Treasury with a note saying: “use for Border Wall ONLY”?

You know, if they love the CSA so much, they can renounce their citizenship and give it to one of the Dreamers because the Dreamers seem to actually want to be here and like being Americans even if they’re not formally American citizens. The CSA fanboys and girls are still upset that they lost a war over 150 years ago. Don’t tell me that you love the United States of America if you think the CSA was this glorious cause.

I suspect the intent is to fund Trump’s border wall vanity project (or whatever slush fund(s) by hook or by crook, by devising so many ways that all cannot possibly be accounted for, and that Trumps First Amendment support show in the Oval this week is just one more strategy to that end, considering that he mentioned a “trillion dollars” in Federal aid to education.

With the new law he signed, arbitrary amounts of that (he mentioned billions) might be denied on the basis that “someone” was silenced or “discouraged” from expressing himself or herself. What is not clear to me is what happens to such “blocked” funding. Would the executive branch then get to re-allocate it? Maybe Betsy Devos? Or her brother? Seems like it may be a strategy to sidestep the Constitution, with respect to federal revenue and spending.

The MSNBC panel discussed that Mueller had a narrow area to report on. That goes to Chuck Todd asking if the fact Mueller never really mentioned the Trump kids means they are in the clear.

The thinking is SDNY courts have way more power and cover of the Trump’s and Trump companies. They benefit from Mueller’s discovery and evidence collection and testimony. And much of that is not in the narrow definition of Mueller’s investigation and leaving that to SDNY keeps the “politics” out of it making less a witch hunt and more an investigation that was legally defined.
