CL’ed….
Double sad’s here:

Sugar Ray’s Marc McGrath reveals he is going deaf: ‘It’s scary because my job is hearing’

“It’s funny, I got into music and rock ‘n’ roll not to worry about any of this, business, mindsets, health,” he said. “I wanted to party; I’m in a band; that’s what you do. And then life catches up to you and reality happens and by the grace of God we became a band. Also, I found myself running a multi-million dollar corporation.”

He compared his plight to that of the 68-year-old rocker Huey Lewis, who canceled all his previously-scheduled tour dates last year after being diagnosed with Meniere’s disease, an inner-ear disorder that left him unable to hear music well enough to sing.

“The whole Huey Lewis thing has been a warning for all of this for sure,” McGrath said.

Thing is, they’re not stupid or gullible. They’re arrogant and deluded about their average intelligence.

Being arrogant doesn’t make you an anti-vaxxer. It sounds like they are either very susceptible to propaganda or they are not too bright.

No. :)

Two things in conflict: their general intelligence and their religious beliefs. Two of them have master’s degrees and all three are reasonably bright. But this is wrapped up in religious belief. Their church pushes those beliefs. Trump pushes those beliefs. They follow.

They have also always been people who think they get everything about how the world works. They think they are special. Part of this is also about having a view they think is a revelation that only a select few understand. Everyone else is sheep. That is arrogance that they carry about being “right.”

They’re pretty insufferable.

I think BlueGrl21is saying the arrogance is making them think they are smarter than they are; too full of themselves to understand their lack of knowledge on a subject like vaccinations.

Sometimes also considered being ‘thick.”

We were attending a baby swimming class. Part of the instruction was to dunk the kids’ heads underwater. One mother just couldn’t bring herself to do it, she felt that she was somehow “hurting” her child…I think that is also part of the mentality of some anti-vaxxers…too insecure to do something that will help their child survive in the long run…

I definitely think there’s a strong component of arrogance in almost all anti-vax sentiment, and in most contrarian mindsets and conspiracy culture generally. These people get off on the idea that they’re smarter than legions of subject matter experts, who they either feel are elitist and look down on them or are part of a vast sinister medical industrial complex conspiracy. So yeah, for the most part they’re not too bright (or have a very narrow kind of savant like intelligence) but they fall in to this trap because they have a complex about not being bright and this arrogation of expertise they have not earned becomes their coping mechanism.

here’s an interesting explanation of Barr’s behavior and the “sources close to the investigation” leak from Dkos

a lot of speculation to be sure
maybe glimmers of who’s really driving this
(and it’s not Barr, and Mueller’s not gone into retirement yet)

re: #14 gocart mozart

Actually, there’s a way to explain this in the storyline: The Terminators are cybernetic organisms i.e. human flesh over a metal endoskeleton. It’s long been established in the series that future generations of Terminators are becoming more and more lifelike so as to become completely indistinguishable from humans in appearance, behavior, etc.

Evidently, the aged appearance could be a result of programming for some certain mission (maybe it was a long term mission and aging was added to allow the machine to blend in more easily as time passed) or could be a tactical choice i.e. nobody expects an old grey haired guy to be able to crush them like a tin can.

It is, I admit, a bit of a stretch, but fortunately the Terminator universe is one in which something like this can be explained away without getting too ridiculous.

Wasn’t the reason given in the last one he was in was that he was the military person that the Terminator disguise had been based and had aged since the template had been created? (Though why all Terminators would look like the same guy would be an obvious weakness - I presume that the Colonies in BSG eventually caught on that the Cylons were all following a limited set of templates.)

this fits into a comment i made last thread regarding i dont care how you vote, i care how you decide how to vote.

when belief comes calling to take responsibility for decision making, i dont care how educated or smart a person thinks they are. i care what definition of “belief” they are using.

- belief that - an assertion of generally accepted objective universal truth - such that there can be one at all regarding whatever it is we’re talking about
- belief in - an assertion of faith where faith is belief without proof. this is by definition subjective, and the standards of evidence - in any other but a personally acceptable sense of the word - do not apply.

if your worldview is based on belief in things, that’s nice for you. Absolutely no one has to see it, agree with it, acknowledge it or follow it.

if your worldview is based on belief that, then you might just be asked to show your work so we can see if it stands up to scrutiny and therefore acceptance by the rest of us. because the cream rises.

My oldest cousin and I have locked horns since we were 4 and 5 years old. She’s absolutely insufferable.

I was at a family reunion last year, talking to my uncle, who I am close to. She jumped in and started her vaccine soliloquy. I ignored her. Then she popped off with, “I can’t help it if you are too ignorant to see it.”

I looked at her and said, “Let’s get one thing straight right now. You are not smarter than me. You are maybe of average intelligence on a good day.” With as much scorn as I could muster.

She chose to leave the conversation.

“Smarter” isn’t the relevant point here: a measles virus, e.g., has no way of knowing (or caring) how “smart” you are, or think yourself to be: it lands in your body, it’s going to reproduce to the max unless you’ve got those antibodies. And it’s not all that “smart” to prefer getting those antibodies though a live virulent infection, vs. a relatively benign vaccine.

Yes, I actually did some research on this movie on my break just now and that’s Arnie playing the human the Terminator was modeled on. Apparently it’s going to be a direct sequel to T2 and Linda Hamilton is back. I’m kind of excited about this.

Heh, Ari Mleber is talking about some reporting that says while there may not have been a criminal conspiracy on the part of Trump, it doesn’t rule out they could have been seen as usable dupes and played by a sophisticated Russian intelligence operation.

Which would mean the Trumps had no idea they were being involved they just went along.

Oh no doubt there. I was basically just concentrating on the “we didn’t collude with Russia” Trumps. They may have stepped in it.

Makes you wonder how long the Russians have been working Trump. Could go as far back as the first time Trump wanted to run for President. They knew the ego was there, just needed some guidance and incentives. Just keep him close and if he decides to run, you have your in.

The whole time they’ve could have been hanging him with tough loans and payments for their help, promises of buildings, etc., even friendships with oligarchs just to keep him on the line.

This is a great international political crime story, if we weren’t having to live it.

I knew a woman who left her cat at home for 3 months with someone visiting to feed it daily. The cat disappeared. The woman came back and had great faith that the cat would return. She believed so hard that the next cat that came along with the same orange tabby color became her old cat, returned at last, with a different number of toes on the front paws.

No.

That’s the difference between being smart (knowing things and even being an expert in a certain field) and being wise (knowing the things you don’t know).

re: #17 goddamnedfrank

I definitely think there’s a strong component of arrogance in almost all anti-vax sentiment, and in most contrarian mindsets and conspiracy culture generally. These people get off on the idea that they’re smarter than legions of subject matter experts, who they either feel are elitist and look down on them or are part of a vast sinister medical industrial complex conspiracy. So yeah, for the most part they’re not too bright (or have a very narrow kind of savant like intelligence) but they fall in to this trap because they have a complex about not being bright and this arrogation of expertise they have not earned becomes their coping mechanism.

One thing that’s very unfortunate about all this is that like everything in general, the medical establishment needs to be intelligently critiqued from outside, since no institution on earth can really do it from the inside.

But the legit criticisms get drowned out by an ocean of woo and quackery.

I don’t think stupidity will be a good defense.

Can anyone say Donny Jr., Ivanka and Jared along with others would be this stupid? I knew you could.

And weren’t we just talking about ignorance and arrogance?

While Trump(?s) are ones never to admit being wrong I suspect there is more than that. There are almost numberless examples of politicians getting offered the option of and claiming incompetence when the alternative is criminality. (Looking at you Chris “I know nothing about bridge shut-downs” Christie.)

Let’s see…. the number of crossings is at multidecade lows. How is this an emergency now?

It wasn’t a crisis a year ago or two years ago?

It only became one once the GOP lost the House because Trump decided this was his path to autocracy and the one issue his bigoted base is still backing him unconditionally on.

Any of you who are golfers need to read Rick Reilly’s “Commander in Cheat.” Just was released. Fantastic. Reilly has known Trump since Marla and is an incredible sportswriter with connections to pretty much every athlete out there. He also cannot stand Trump.

I grew up in a golf family, caddying for my grandfather, and the thought of anyone cheating at golf was anathema. You…do…not…cheat. You may make a gentlemen’s agreement to hit another ball but it is agreed to openly. You NEVER cheat.

The question was “how was this going to help pass legislation.”

The answer should be something like “The American people have a right to know about conflicts of interests, etc.” Otherwise it just looks like politics…

It’s really easy, Trump made explicit claims that the GOP tax law was going to “cost me a fortune.” It’s an obviously legitimate Congressional exercise to see if he flagrantly lied to the American public in order to secure himself financial gain.

Yes. Barr’s foot-dragging is inexcusable. Why he decided to become a lackey for this corrupt bully of a president is just beyond comprehension. When I worked with him years ago, he seemed to be a man of integrity. Now he’s willingly harming America and the rule of law. Go figure.

re: #90 I Would Prefer Not To

well she DID answer that, she stated at the beginning, the legislation already exists, hence no need to pass any new legislation, true?

She can’t help it if the Press is not aware of the laws as they currently exist, so she read her the law on the books that allows them the RIGHT to request those records.

the only reason this is a big deal is that Dem routinely release their tax records, hence no need for anyone to invoke the legislation on hand. Whereas THIS administration is full of fucking thieves.

Its simply a fucking shame that the Speaker of The House has to educate the damn press regarding the laws that are already on the books while she’s busy being the only sane branch of the Government.
