He won’t actually give up the Presidency.

Because it will mean him seeing the new President sworn in and then walking off to be handed subpoenas and summonses…

(had to look up the plural form of the last word, and it is in fact “summonses”)

Just got back from seeing Umphrey’s McGee in Aspen. They played at the base of the Buttermilk Ski Area, the whole concert site was covered in wet spring snow.

First Umphrey’s McGee show I ever went to in ski boots! Best decision I made tonight.

Ski area closes on Sunday. Employee ski day and banquet/awards ceremony on Monday, where I find out if I’m Employee of the Year. I gotta say, upper management is always very happy to see me. Last week the Assistant General Manager bought me a shot and said “Thank you Charlie for your hard work this winter, you kicked ass and took names.”

HMS Cockchafer was a Royal Navy Insect-class gunboat. She was built by Barclay Curle and launched on 17 December 1915 as the fifth Royal Navy ship to carry this name. The Insect class was originally designed for service on the River Danube but most of them spent much of their service on Chinese rivers

.

She served in both world wars and was scrapped in Singapore in 1949.

Here’s an old British comedy film I came across on YouTube, The Iron Maiden, from 1963.

At about 12:00 in, the S.S. United States makes a cameo appearance. Kinda sad she’s still rusting away at dock: I know there’s been plans to restore her and perhaps make a museum ship out of her, like the R.M.S. Queen Mary, but so far, those plans have all come to naught.

Some musical analysis of a perhaps familiar tune.

The Magical Power of “Let It Go”: W. Anthony Sheppard, Williams College

The writers had Idina Menzel in mind when they wrote the song. I remember reading something to the effect that Menzel uses a forceful vocal technique to add some punch to the lyrics, but I’ve forgotten what the technique is called. I do recall that untrained singers should not try it, unless they want to strain their pipes.

Fascinating article in a mainstream Russian paper today, claiming “Putin’s no longer the guarantor of stability”. Political scientist predicts “the system will collapse. Key phase of crisis will last a few days: days that will shock Russia & affect the world.”

Moskovskii Komsomolets is the former Moscow Communist Youth League press organ, but it has become one of the leading voices in rational politics in Russia, sort of like how Teen Vogue is one of the few publications that did not drink the MSM Kool-Aid under Trump.

And as I recall, Putin never really has gotten around to picking a successor.

That would likely lead to a power vacuum if Putin went quickly, and who knows what would come after that. Various factions jockeying for power can always be a dangerous thing, especially in the Byzantine world of Kremlin politics.

He cannot really pick one as his power rests on playing parties off against each other…Now I ran across another story that he is ready to declare a new union with Byealrus, which would then allow him to serve again as President as it would be a “new” state, and might even be able to pull a Xi and get himself declared Prez-for-Life.

Trump at the border: “Judge Flores, whoever you may be, that decision is a disaster for our country.”

Jenny Flores was the 15 year-old plaintiff from El Salvador in Flores v. Reno, that determined the standard for how migrant children must be treated in US custody-WHAT AN IDIOT.

The disaster to our nation and the world is that Trump is President and the entire GOP (at least those who currently hold office) march in lockstep with him.

Not that “Trump humiliated” isn’t a Good Thing in virtually any case, but it’s probably unlikely that this is going to seriously impact Trump/GOP fundraising. You don’t need to have a big party (in Beverly Hills or elsewhere) to write a check. And those checks WILL be coming. And I’m sure The Orange Anus could care less about these affairs: he’s probably just as happy to spend his time outside, cheating at golf, and saving his personal-appearance time for his Nuremberg campaign rallies. Yeah, I don’t think so. Relations between Russia and Belarus right now are at a low point, and Lukashenko looks like he’s trying to open up as much as he can to the West without completely tipping the applecart. Whatever nice words Lukashenko had about this plan seemed to be to get him out of Russia in one piece, and then he promptly went back home and announced he wanted closer ties with NATO. Americans can go to Belarus now without a visa.

I could have left for a company with many more women in leadership. But thing is, behind me at my company is an avalanche of young women, at least 25%. Investment in girls in STEM is paying off, as are new hiring practices. If I leave they don’t have someone to point to and say, “Look. I can do that.”

I’ve dealt with newer versions at work and on my son’s PC and so on but this is my first in depth dealing with IT in ages. God Damn I’d forgotten just how much I hate the MS way of doing things. The presumption that all users are 2 year olds who must be walked through everything is annoying. The gazillion intrusions that have to be turned off. The fact that I know the same fragile registry is just waiting for the moment when it will do the most damage to become corrupted.

OTOH, the BASH shell is available fullfilling a long forgotten dream - that DOS was a stepping stone to Xenix as a real operating system. Other similar features help.

But OTGrippingHand, did they really have to make is such a fugly hot mess aesthetically?

Back to trying to set this thing up so I can tolerate it…

Of the US? She has a better chance if she runs for President of a university.

It was meant as an acknowledgment she would make a fine leader.

I’d switch Muffet for Trump in a minute.

As a coach she knows how to build an actual team and a staff. And she is aware of some of this nation’s big problems. So she is already about 200 steps in front Donny.

Add in the fact Muffet probably doesn’t think she has the greatest brain like ever, I’m thinking Muffet would pay attention to the advice of advisers, etc.

So, compared to what we have…Muffet for President.

That is all.

I was using Windows 8.1 on my dual boot laptop almost exclusively until last fall, when Windoze endless reboots for upgrades finally pissed me off. Grub has Ubuntu as the default OS, so when I woke up to find Windows had rebooted overnight (killing a download, of course) I said screw it, and modded Ubuntu to do everything I was doing in Windows. I have a tiny Windows 10 tablet with keyboard that I use for travel, and I use it for those occasional times when I have to use Windows. Now I don’t cuss at my computer as much as I used to.

You might want to prepare some handouts to flash in her face next time she annoys you.

When she tells you how awesome Trump’s economic development and job growth numbers are, show her that the numbers have been pretty steady every single month for 9 years and ask her why the same job creation numbers were “a disgrace” when the president she doesn’t like was in office.

Remind her how bitterly she complained about Obama “wasting time” golfing and show her stats that Trump spends twice as many days golfing as Obama ever did. When she “but her e-mails”, show her that Ivanka and Jared are doing the same thing and why doesn’t she mind that?

When she calls the Russia investigation “unprecedented”, point out that Benghazi was investigated 7 times, they never got the results they wanted so they’d do it again. And again. And again. When she says it was a lot of money, remind her that the Manafort property seizures were more than enough to pay for the entire investigation.

And for fucks sake, 33 INDICTMENTS!! A dozen convictions. 7 people have already gone to prison. There were 0 Obama associates indicted. In the whole 8 years. NONE. Investigations and investigations and they couldn’t find anything wrong, no matter how hard they tried. R’s held the house for most of his admin, and the Senate for half of it, and still NONE.

She obviously only loves and hates whoever Fox and Limbaugh tell her to love and hate, she has no independent thoughts of any kind.

This attitude appeals to all the components of the modern Republican party:
1. The very wealthy who hate any taxes that don’t directly benefit them.
2. The libertarians, who believe in each person for themselves.
3. The deeply religious, who believe that all good comes from G-d and only religious institutions should be involved in helping others. After all, if the state can be a more efficient means of helping others, many may not see any reason to pay money and homage to religious leaders.
4. The racists who don’t want to pay anything to help those others.
