WATCH LIVE as the Republican Party Shows How Completely Dominated by White Supremacism They Are (House Judiciary Committee Hearing)

Executives from Google and Facebook are facing Congress Tuesday to answer questions about their role in the spread of hate crimes and the rise of white nationalism in the U.S.

Neil Potts, Facebook’s director of public policy and Alexandria Walden, counsel for free expression and human rights at Google, will speak to the House Judiciary Committee along with leaders of the Anti-Defamation League, the Equal Justice Society and others.

The hearing was prompted by the March shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand, when a gunman killed 50 people at two mosques and livestreamed the attacks on Facebook.

The suspected shooter also published a lengthy post online that espoused white supremacist views.

But controversy over white nationalism and hate speech has dogged online platforms such as Facebook and Google’s YouTube for years. The companies long extolled the value of free speech while trying to avoid acting as content editors, then were forced to deal with a resulting torrent of abuse directed at their users. In 2017, following the deadly demonstrations in Charlottesville, Virginia, tech giants began banishing extremist groups and individuals espousing white supremacist views and support for violence.

In March, Facebook extended its ban on hate speech to include white nationalists in addition to just white supremacists — a distinction civil rights groups had long called meaningless.

Despite the ban, accounts such as one with the name “Aryan Pride” were still visible as of late Monday. This account’s self-description read, in part, “IF YOUR NOT WHITE friend ur own kind cause Im not ur friend.”

In addition, on Wednesday a Senate subcommittee will hold a hearing titled “Stifling Free Speech: Technological Censorship and the Public Discourse.” This hearing will address the claim of perceived bias against conservatives by tech companies such as Facebook, Google and Twitter.

The companies have denied any such bias. While political figures from President Donald Trump on down keep levying the accusation, none have yet presented evidence of an anti-conservative or any other political tilt.

The worst thing about Candace Owens being in front of Congress is it gives her legitimacy as someone important with something important to say.

Also, it feeds her ego. She is going to be even more of a handful to deal with.

Adobe Shockwave dies today

Flash continues to infect our computers, but many sites are realizing it is being replaced with built-in functionality.

Adobe pulls the plug on Shockwave—no, not Shockwave Flash, which is different—today. Dating back to 1995 when it was named Macromedia Shockwave, this plugin was used for games, presentations, and other multimedia on the web.

It isn’t the Union (aka the USA).

They’re out for reasserting the Lost Cause Confederacy - aka the insurrectionists who started the war of southern secession over their right to keep slaves.

The GOP senator was also critical of Stephen Miller, a senior White House adviser who has been one of the leading voices within the administration that has lobbied for the wholesale housecleaning at DHS.

“I think it would be hard for him to demonstrate he’s accomplished anything for the president,” Grassley said. When asked to elaborate, the senator chuckled and added: “It’s pretty hard to elaborate on it when there hasn’t been any accomplishments.”

But Candace is a typical RWNJ who didn’t want to waste time acquiring real knowledge, but instead went directly to performance art, a very lucrative profession in the RW world. Can’t tell you how busy we were back in ‘08, redesigning EVERY SINGLE RESTAURANT SITE IN LA (seemingly) that had been built in Flash, so that it would actually frickin’ work on iPhones.

I do miss the way that Flash/Shockwave allowed you to actually control what animations looked like, and allow you to have input functions without having to crank on the fucking DOM so much, and use bloated assholish JavaScript libraries.

I know, I know. Bow down before the shibboleth of “security”. But doesn’t JS have its own holes & vulnerabilities? And I’m fucking sick of every site I go to having such messy implmenetations that my laptop fans go bonkers.

I use NoScript and Ghostery now. Is this a better web?

Devin Nunes is really a prize at rake-stepping/foot-shooting/own-goaling, whatever, Isn’t he? IIRC, the “news” of the winery hookers/blow cruise broke last year sometime: Nunes was simply an investor in the business; he likely had zero idea of what was going on on the boat - and, as I recall, said so at the time. Whereupon the matter (AFAICT) was dropped.
But of course, Devin the Dunce couldn’t just leave it: he just HAD to go on a suing-spree (against a newspaper? SRSLY?), thus making absolutely sure that any discreditable (however ludicrous) tattle would be sure to get taken out for another round of Internet mockery. Really boosts his case, doesn’t it?

Volunteer attorneys will litigate immigration cases and provide “case support” for one year, with an option to end that for another year. “Prior immigration experience is not required as ICE OPLA will provide requisite training,” the document said.

Juanita Jean: Banana Republic or Peach State?

I kinda suspect these Georgia fellas skimmed over the First Amendment in their excitement to get to the Second, which makes their winkies bigger. The First Amendment says, “Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech or of the press.” That that includes Georgia.

Apparently the systems they had in Georgia to protect the Repub majority are not sufficient. They need more.

Something to think about:

Today’s Democratic Party is increasingly perceived as dominated by its “woke” left wing. But the views of Democrats on social media often bear little resemblance to those of the wider Democratic electorate.

The outspoken group of Democratic-leaning voters on social media is outnumbered, roughly 2 to 1, by the more moderate, more diverse and less educated group of Democrats who typically don’t post political content online, according to data from the Hidden Tribes Project.
….
Gov. Ralph Northam of Virginia was pummeled on social media after [the yearbook pictures came out], and virtually every Democratic presidential candidate demanded his resignation.

Yet the majority of ordinary Democrats in Virginia said Mr. Northam should remain in office, according to a Washington Post/Schar School poll a week later. And black Democrats were likelier than white ones to say Mr. Northam should remain.
….
The rest of the party is easy to miss. Not only is it less active on social media, but it is also under-represented in the well-educated, urban enclaves where journalists roam. It is under-represented in the Northern blue states and districts where most Democratic politicians win elections.

Many in this group are party stalwarts: people who are Democrats because of identity and self-interest — a union worker, an African-American — more than their policy views. Their votes are concentrated in the South, where Democratic politicians rarely win

I just want to say that Senator Dick Durbin is my idea of a perfect Senator. He maintains close ties with his state, including the downstate, non-Chicago part, and he keeps in touch by mail or email with his constituents. I write him him, and get answers. I am sure that he isn’t typing them into his email, but I appreciate the contact.

Of course, it helps that he represents my thoughts pretty well down the line.

This is nuts. These people are putting their children and the larger community at risk because they refuse to vaccinate their kids and prevent the disease from spreading.

The nation needs to end all exemptions for vaccinations except by medical necessity.

———————————

Most religions have no prohibition against vaccinations, however some have considerations, concerns or restrictions regarding vaccination in general, particular reasons for vaccination, or specific vaccine ingredients

virtually no religion objects
the website lists 3 sects or religions that have a theological objection:
- Church of Christ, Scientist
- Dutch Reformed Congregations
- four ‘Faith healing’ denominations

because the story was about orthodox jews:

Judaism supports vaccination as an action to maintain health, and also as a parental responsibility to protect children against future infection. In Judaism the concept of Pikuakh nefesh, acting to save one’s own or another’s life, is a primary value. While some vaccines containing porcine derived gelatin, Jewish scholars, agree that porcine gelatin in injectable form is acceptable.

Yes, that is how ‘childhood’ diseases were handled back in the pre-vaccine days. My mother, a public health nurse, did this for me back in the 1950’s. The ‘Mom’ network would identify who had a certain illness and we would be sent to ‘play’ with them.

Once vaccines were developed and became a safer solution, this was not needed. My mother also got us in the earliest polio vaccine administration she could. (In my case Sabin’s.)

Maybe some of the Republicans need to get out a bit and take a look around. They can start by actually looking at Trump, Miller, Bannon and others and go from there. It’s only been three years or so, maybe they can catch up or something.

Ted Lieu did say that the Republican members of the committee invited her:

The GOP has no interest in a serious discussion; they are interested exclusively in silencing the opposition and making their views the only views covered by the media and heard by the population

My mother used to have Westinghouse washing machines that had the tub with the agitator in it and the wringers on the top back. It had the hose that you had to put up in the ring at the top so it was above the water level in the tub.

We had the two big metal laundry tubs and she would go from the washer to one wringer into one tub and then from that tub to the wringer to the next tub. That was the two rinse cycle.

Then you would take the hose and pull it out of the holder and put the head of it down the floor drain to empty the washer’s tub.

She never wanted a “modern” washing machine. She loved those old wringer types. She worked with those all the way until she passed away back in 1980.

…and with the media passing it all on credulously. Because of course.

Oh, and “what would happen?”
A stressed out mother freaking out, a trip to the ER and an arm that stayed purple for days.

Reminds me of my mother chewing me out after I watched my younger sister stuff a few Spanish peanuts up her nose. “I thought she knew what she was doing” was not an acceptable excuse. I got yelled at all the way to the doctor’s office.

I hope there is some mechanism whereby she can be held to account. She and everybody and anybody else who facilitated these horrors. Ripping families apart and doing quite possibly permanent damage to these children, not all of whom even survive the experience. Part of what they are doing is dumbing down what constitutes racism. So “not using the n-word” and “not fire bombing black churches” and “not being part of a lynching” are all it takes to not be racist.

“The Dark Knight Rises” OST, Track 11: “Why do We Fall?” 2:03.
Composer: Hans Zimmer.
Label: Watertower Music.

Why Do We Fall?

Was Hans Zimmers music used with the appropriate permissions?

Also, I’d like to highlight this track related to the films soundtrack:

Aurora - Hans Zimmer

Background to the track:

The Fire Rises-Aurora (The Dark Knight Trilogy) by Hans Zimmer Live In Prague

Hans composed the track after the Aurora mass shootings.

“Aurora” is dedicated to those who lost their lives and were affected by the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado. I recorded this song in London in the days following the tragedy as a heartfelt tribute to the victims and their families. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Aurora Victim Relief organization. The track is available on iTunes shortly and you can donate here: bitly.com - Hans Zimmer

Not the movie or the original score by Hans Zimmer. But the behavior of the administration.

Also, if you listen to “Aurora”, do so at volume.

Oh, and in a speech at the 1999 Berlin Film Festival, Zimmer stated that he is Jewish, and talked about his mother surviving World War II thanks to her escape from Germany to England in 1939.

By the way, for those who wondered what it has meant that Gov Northam was able to hang on in Virginia after the yearbook scandal:

Scandal has cost Northam, poll indicates

“Just 40 percent of Virginia voters approve of the governor, a Democrat who enjoyed the support of 59 percent as recently as December. By comparison, 44 percent support Trump, who lost the state by five points to Hillary Clinton in 2016.”

“Despite Northam’s precipitous decline in popularity, 52 percent of voters think the governor should remain in office. Forty-two percent say he should resign, according to a survey released Tuesday by Christopher Newport University’s Wason Center for Public Policy.”

When I first started playing music full time (about 1975), the band house I moved in to had a wringer washer and we used it exactly like you described. The thing that would always piss me off is when you were running jeans through the wringer and there was any water in the front pockets, it would sometimes shoot it at you at high velocity and get you all wet.

We did have a decent gas dryer so that was somewhat modern.

South Dakota, Iowa, And Nebraska Join Forces To Pray Away Natural Disasters

Three governors in three Midwest states declared April 7th as a “Statewide Day of Prayer” in the wake of extreme floods.

Governors in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota all declared Sunday, April 7th as a “Statewide Day of Prayer” in the wake of horrendous flooding that swept the Midwest last month.

In an executive proclamation issued last week, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem declared Sunday, April 7th an official day of prayer across the state, KIMT3 News reports. “I am asking South Dakotans to join me in praying for the well-being of our state, our first responders, and all those who’ve been affected by this disaster,” she said.

Noem, an outspoken climate change denier, said that “extreme weather and extreme flooding” wreaked havoc across her state, and urged citizens to give victims and first responders their spiritual support.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds and Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts also made similar statements.

We had one like that when we lived on The Bluff in the ’50s. I burned a 1/16th inch crater in the rampy part when my attempt to recharge a 6vdc dry cell with 110vac went bad. “Why didn’t the circuit breaker pop?” you might ask. Old houses didn’t have circuit breakers, they had molded glass fuses. And the fuse didn’t fuse because poor peoples’ houses had carefully-aligned pennies bridging the hot and neutral fittings.

Last Doolittle Raider dies: Lt. Col. Richard “Dick” Cole passes at 103

SAN ANTONIO — Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Richard E. “Dick” Cole, the last living connection to a daring World War II bombing mission and a frequent visitor to Northwest Florida, died Tuesday in Texas at the age of 103. A memorial service is planned for Randolph Air Force Base in Texas with interment later at Arlington National Cemetery.

Cole was among the 80 Army Air Corps airmen who volunteered for the Doolittle Raiders, a team led by then-Lt. Col. James Doolittle to strike Japan after the Japanese laid waste to American naval power in an attack on Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

I suspect about 60% of techbro lifehacks exist only so they can tell other people about their techbro lifehacks.

…because everything they do is basically a funnel through which they’re shoveling their narcissism.

Today is my 15th wedding anniversary. K and I took a long weekend and outside of a trip to the Museum of Natural History to check out the T Rex exhibit, we pretty much just relaxed all weekend. Back to work tomorrow, but the weekend was nice.

I love my wife. I’m a lucky guy.

Seriously, Jack is extremely fucked up and unwell. But even more importantly there’s a glaring double standard at play, in that were he a woman instead of celebrating his obviously pathological bullshit people would be lining up to stage an intervention.

My wife and I celebrate our 25th next month. We’re going to have friends over. I have to figure out something to get her. It doesn’t help that I just spent a boatload of money for the kid who had the appendectomy; he needed some new rear tires on his car in addition to the trip out there.

I mean if Buttigieg thinks evangelicals should be supporting him instead of Trump, he fundamentally does not understand the roots of Christianity. But then he is an Episcopalian, so he might not actually understand Christianity more than superficially.

What Buttigieg does not understand is how many evangelicals who claim to be devout Christians are hypocrites who, in fact, detest everything about Christianity. Erick Erickson is certainly such a hypocrite.

It appears as if the EU still wants a soft transition and will offer the UK a long extension. But May wants a short extension of course, so she can pretend to be listening to those who want to leave the EU. If she agrees to a one year delay the Brexiteers will riot.

Mormons are considered cultists by Evangelicals. It annoys me to no end how my congressman, Andy Biggs, who is Mormon, tries to kiss up to local Evangelical churches, because they believe he’s going to hell for not ticking the right belief boxes. He’s craven. If Evangelicals came into real power, they’d have no problem stomping on anyone who doesn’t believe their way.
