I want to pick your brains as to what I should do here. I’m going through my instructions for my upcoming trip to Japan, and the tour guide suggests a piece of luggage that holds 70 to 90 liters and a daypack that holds 35 to 50 liters.
Now this is the deal—I took a suitcase with about 110 liters of space to Japan last October and I SWORE up and down that I would not take a large suitcase again, that I’d slender down to a carry-on (even if I checked it). It was a right royal pain in the ass to haul that thing around Japan, up and down stairs, on and off buses, trolleys, shinkansens, a speed catamaran—holy crap I so do not EVER want to do that again in my life.
A 110 liter suitcase is about 29 inches high. I’m definitely not taking that.
Here’s the sizes of the other two suitcases:
A 73 liter suitcase is about 26 inches high x 10.75 inches deep x 17.5 inches wide.
A 40 liter suitcase is about 21 inches high x 9 inches deep x 14 inches wide.
And yes, that is a SIGNIFICANT volume difference.
Should I go with my initial and continuing gut feeling and get a 21 inch carry on that I intend to check in, based on my previous experience and my expectation that I would have to pack very light? Or go with the larger one, which is actually a “medium” size?
Also, if anyone has suggestions as for a good brand, I’m all ears. I’ve read so many reviews and even more expensive pieces of luggage have ZIPPER ISSUES. *sigh*

I traveled around Japan for a month with only a small shoulder bag and an Osprey Farpoint 55L backpack with removable daypack. The shoulder bag carried my wallet, passport, and other important items and doubled as a camera bag on outings. The Osprey backpack is separable, so I used the daypack portion as a carry-on and checked the larger part.
The previous year I spent a month in Malaysia with a much simpler backpack — a bookbag, really — and a small roller bag. The roller bag was a pain, especially when traveling on public transport. It’s what prompted me to get the Osprey pack, on the recommendation of my son, who also has one.
If a backpack doesn’t appeal to you, go with a small checked bag. I’m in the office, so I can’t check the dimensions of mine, which is a Chinese brand. Despite what the tour guide suggests, you do not really need such a huge bag, unless you plan to be a fashion plate every single day.
Most important: bring two pairs of comfortable shoes. Switching between them will be better for your feet.
Also: packing cubes. I used to scoff at these, but now I have two sets of Eagle Creek packing cubes. They really do help keep clothes organized and compacted down.

Her speech was mostly about the fact that so much of the conservative movement accuses Muslim Americans of dual loyalties and questions their patriotism.

Sounds like a good plan. When in doubt, travel light. Unless you’re traveling to some remote part of the world, where items might be hard to find, bring only what you absolutely must have with you. Anything else you can buy there, including a cheap suitcase.

I did. Picked up a tablet with detachable keyboard and left my Lenovo laptop back home. The tablet has HDMI output and some of places I stayed had HDMI-capable TVs.
But, editing a book with a tablet is no fun. That’s what I did last winter in Vietnam. I was glad my Airbnb in Danang had a modern TV I could connect to.

I cannot say how much space you should bring along. It depends upon very personal decisions. For example, me being 6’5” and fairly large, and wearing size 15 wide shoes, my space needs are probably quite different than yours.
And there are different approaches. A lady friend used to pack so that she could carry on everything. I cannot do that.
However, for backpacking a good metric is a 60 liter pack for a 2-5 day hike. And usually one can easily stuff 40 lbs into one. Which is enough weight for me. (Add food, water, and a few misc items to this.)
Also, different backpack styles are made to fit different body types. I would recommend that if you decide to get a pack, that you try it on at a reputable place, such as REI.
In terms of what you might want to get, I understand that there are basically three types of luggage these days. Suitcase style, suitcase style with backpack straps, and regular backpacks.
One place that I start my search when I am looking at a purchase is wirecutter.com Obviously, they are only a start. These may give you ideas:

Another option is to send your stuff back to the States instead of lugging it back with you. There is a service called the Luggage Club that can arrange shipping. I looked into it, but their fees are too high. Using the local postal service or even UPS/FedEx/DHL would probably be cheaper.

I agree with you on the straps. I went to try on the fairpoint at a local REI. Without even measuring me, the ‘backpack’ salesguy politely suggested that I also look at Gregory packs. He was right.
And yes, I agree, luggage wheels outside of hotel and airport floors don’t seem to do me much good either.
Your point on traveling light when in civilization, is also spot on.
It is amazing how much stuff we pack that we end up not needing. Which is the point of the first basic training 10 or 20 mile march. Plus, when you pick up something at the destination, it is likely to be more meaningful than a similar item brought from home.

I remember back in the 1970s when I was traveling back and forth to the Middle East. I would catch a connecting flight at JFK. Which, in those days had a habit of losing checked through bags.
On the way there I would always collect my bag from the internal US flight and then personally check it onto the international flight. On the way home I would just check it through. In those days, if it arrived so many hours after the passenger, the airlines would actually drop it off at one’s home the next day. I may have been fortunate because I never lost a bag.
Of course that was before the airline figured out that they could save a lot of money by cutting back on service.
The first time I flew that route, I did not know this. So I checked my luggage through on the way into the site. And it took three days for my luggage to catch up with me. It was an uncomfortable three days.

I want to pick your brains as to what I should do here. I’m going through my instructions for my upcoming trip to Japan, and the tour guide suggests a piece of luggage that holds 70 to 90 liters and a daypack that holds 35 to 50 liters.
Now this is the deal—I took a suitcase with about 110 liters of space to Japan last October and I SWORE up and down that I would not take a large suitcase again, that I’d slender down to a carry-on (even if I checked it). It was a right royal pain in the ass to haul that thing around Japan, up and down stairs, on and off buses, trolleys, shinkansens, a speed catamaran—holy crap I so do not EVER want to do that again in my life.
A 110 liter suitcase is about 29 inches high. I’m definitely not taking that.
Here’s the sizes of the other two suitcases:
A 73 liter suitcase is about 26 inches high x 10.75 inches deep x 17.5 inches wide.
A 40 liter suitcase is about 21 inches high x 9 inches deep x 14 inches wide.And yes, that is a SIGNIFICANT volume difference.
Should I go with my initial and continuing gut feeling and get a 21 inch carry on that I intend to check in, based on my previous experience and my expectation that I would have to pack very light? Or go with the larger one, which is actually a “medium” size?
Also, if anyone has suggestions as for a good brand, I’m all ears. I’ve read so many reviews and even more expensive pieces of luggage have ZIPPER ISSUES. *sigh*

When I was young (30) we chartered a boat for a couple weeks in the Virgin Islands. One morning at 5:30 AM the first mate woke us all up by waving a Bloody Mary in our face and said, “Wakey, wakey, time to set sail. We were sailing from Cooper Island in the BVI down to St. Croix, about 46 miles away. I was navigator and plotted the wind set, tide set, how tight we could go into the wind without having to tack, and did the calculations. We locked the helm, set the sails and made breakfast and more drinks. The crew was getting sleepy from the food and drink. I don’t think I made it to 9 AM before I fell asleep. I woke up at about 12:30 in the afternoon and looked around, everybody was passed out and we had been sailing for several hours. There were no islands in sight on the horizon so I checked our course and we was still on our original compass setting. The ocean on the passage is very deep and the blue color is disturbing. With no visual navigational landmarks, I had to trust the math. Finally about 3:30 we saw St. Croix and we actually hit the channel into Christianstead Harbor without adjusting the course, all by math, geometry, and dead reckoning. We set anchor about 5:30 that evening, just in time for cocktails. I want to thank the California public education system for the tools to do that. Well except for the sailing part, for that I read a book on how to sail. (also thanks to the California public education system for teaching me to read)

That is not in the hands of the European Parliament. The UK would have to call new elections and elect a new British Parliament that would be in a position to revoke Article 50.

I had an old set of luggage that finally was dumped a year ago when I moved. Dated to the mid-80s and by this time was really starting to break down.
The main reason I went to a soft-sided duffel bag is that I can get it into places in overhead bins on planes that a rigid bag could not go. And the dimensions are so that its length is equal to the depth of many overheads.
The airline whipsaw about luggage standards over the years has been “interesting” to see how they change the environment for profit and then the passengers’ luggage habits evolve to match it. Start charging for checked bags -> carry-on bag numbers explode and they also massively increase in size. LImit size of carry-ons -> bags adjust to the new size and/or passengers bring on oversize bags knowing they’ll get gate checked (and generally for free). Etc. etc.

Trump’s approval rating remains in the tank at around 40%. It’s unmoved by anything Trump does these days.
And yet Trump continues to attack the Mueller report, that supposedly exonerates him, calling Democrats traitors, etc., all while claiming he’s exonerated and that he won the Mueller report.
This is all value signaling to Trump’s bigoted base, which continues to push for shutting down immigration of nonwhites, eliminating amnesty, and otherwise looking to push nonwhites (and women) to the curb.
Trump’s lies come at a feverish pace that it’s hard for people to keep up, and the media continues to do an awful job about this. Instead of calling out the clear lies, they continue to headline the Trump statement that includes the lie, and only later do they reveal that it’s a lie. This is no way to do reporting or journalism. It’s hagiography and stenography when you regurgitate what someone says uncritically.
Meanwhile, Assange was perpwalked out of the Ecuadorian embassy after this asylum was revoked. Good. The fucker has avoided justice for years because of this - and now faces justice on both rape charges, and for espionage/accessing classified documents.
Who is behind WL? I’m guessing Russia, because when you see where the leaks come from and who benefits from the leaks, all signs point to Russia (whether they’re the ones hacking to get the info, or the Russian govt benefits from the chaos sown by the WL publication of said classified info). Assange is being charged with hacking a secured US computer system. They aren’t charging him with publishing the information (and some 1A folks think that’s the right move since that would chill publishers like the NYT who publish information from leaks).
Assange conspired with others to break into secured computer systems. That’s an entirely different beast. I think a plea deal with prosecutors could have significant value here. I’m not talking immunity but rather in exchange for a lighter prison sentence in the US (he’d still face the rape charges overseas), he has to allocute to what he and his comrades did to hack into American computer networks to manipulate the outcome of the 2016 election and who he worked with, their methods, etc…. all in the name of transparency.
I’d suggest a plea deal is in order. Spend less time in prison in exchange for detailing every single action that he took to undermine US national security - including who he contacted in the US, Trumpworld, and Russia.

The EDVA statement on the indictment of Assange.
Julian P. Assange, 47, the founder of WikiLeaks, was arrested today in the United Kingdom pursuant to the U.S./UK Extradition Treaty, in connection with a federal charge of conspiracy to commit computer intrusion for agreeing to break a password to a classified U.S. government computer.
According to court documents unsealed today, the charge relates to Assange’s alleged role in one of the largest compromises of classified information in the history of the United States.
The indictment alleges that in March 2010, Assange engaged in a conspiracy with Chelsea Manning, a former intelligence analyst in the U.S. Army, to assist Manning in cracking a password stored on U.S. Department of Defense computers connected to the Secret Internet Protocol Network (SIPRNet), a U.S. government network used for classified documents and communications. Manning, who had access to the computers in connection with her duties as an intelligence analyst, was using the computers to download classified records to transmit to WikiLeaks. Cracking the password would have allowed Manning to log on to the computers under a username that did not belong to her. Such a deceptive measure would have made it more difficult for investigators to determine the source of the illegal disclosures.
During the conspiracy, Manning and Assange engaged in real-time discussions regarding Manning’s transmission of classified records to Assange. The discussions also reflect Assange actively encouraging Manning to provide more information. During an exchange, Manning told Assange that “after this upload, that’s all I really have got left.” To which Assange replied, “curious eyes never run dry in my experience.”
Assange is charged with conspiracy to commit computer intrusion and is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
G. Zachary Terwilliger, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, John C. Demers, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, and Nancy McNamara, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office, made the announcement after the charges were unsealed. She has this bizarre romantic notion that the GOP is anything but what it actually is and that’s it is filled to the brim with people who were okay with the attacks on her mother and father in 2000 for her sister’s ethnicity and the Orange Chode continuing to attack her father after his death last summer. You probably want to do them in order since there is a character development arc going and references back to events in previous novels, though it’s not a requirement.
Though the use of Lovecraftian stuff is not as explicit as “Colder War”.
And note that Snowden is playing to the conspiracy crowd by stating he was arrested by the “UK’s secret police”. The Metropolitan Police does do counter-terrorism stuff, but is primarily the police force for London outside of the “square mile” City of London.
So I expect Wikileaks and supporters will harp constantly on his arrest being about trumped up charges that have since been dropped and/or being oppressed for whistle-blowing journalism.

I’m giving the Russians or whomever credit for telling Ecuador to go ahead and lift the asylum. I’m under the presumption that they were doing it for this long more than just to give the UK and USA a middle finger.

“If President Moreno wants to illegally terminate a refugee publisher’s asylum to cover up an offshore corruption scandal, history will not be kind,” WikiLeaks said in a statement.
Assange’s defense team suggested on Twitter that Moreno was trying to use the scandal to pressure the WikiLeaks founder.

President Trump’s older sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, has retired as a federal appellate judge, ending an investigation into whether she violated judicial conduct rules by participating in fraudulent tax schemes with her siblings.
The court inquiry stemmed from complaints filed last October, after an investigation by The New York Times found that the Trumps had engaged in dubious tax schemes during the 1990s, including instances of outright fraud, that greatly increased the inherited wealth of Mr. Trump and his siblings. Judge Barry not only benefited financially from most of those tax schemes, The Times found; she was also in a position to influence the actions taken by her family.
Judge Barry, now 82, has not heard cases in more than two years but was still listed as an inactive senior judge, one step short of full retirement. In a letter dated Feb. 1, a court official notified the four individuals who had filed the complaints that the investigation was “receiving the full attention” of a judicial conduct council. Ten days later, Judge Barry filed her retirement papers.

I want to pick your brains as to what I should do here. I’m going through my instructions for my upcoming trip to Japan, and the tour guide suggests a piece of luggage that holds 70 to 90 liters and a daypack that holds 35 to 50 liters.
Now this is the deal—I took a suitcase with about 110 liters of space to Japan last October and I SWORE up and down that I would not take a large suitcase again, that I’d slender down to a carry-on (even if I checked it). It was a right royal pain in the ass to haul that thing around Japan, up and down stairs, on and off buses, trolleys, shinkansens, a speed catamaran—holy crap I so do not EVER want to do that again in my life.
A 110 liter suitcase is about 29 inches high. I’m definitely not taking that.
Here’s the sizes of the other two suitcases:
A 73 liter suitcase is about 26 inches high x 10.75 inches deep x 17.5 inches wide.
A 40 liter suitcase is about 21 inches high x 9 inches deep x 14 inches wide.And yes, that is a SIGNIFICANT volume difference.
Should I go with my initial and continuing gut feeling and get a 21 inch carry on that I intend to check in, based on my previous experience and my expectation that I would have to pack very light? Or go with the larger one, which is actually a “medium” size?
Also, if anyone has suggestions as for a good brand, I’m all ears. I’ve read so many reviews and even more expensive pieces of luggage have ZIPPER ISSUES. *sigh*
For carry on, make sure your airline allows it. Example: British Air (whom I am flying to Europe) has different requirements for carry on. They do not allow 21” carry ons. They also allow only one carry on (even if that carry on is a clutch purse the size of a postage stamp). So my purse must fit into my backpack, otherwise they will not let me go through security coming home.
How long are you going to be gone? Will you need to do laundry? Will you be able to do laundry? That will drive how much you need to take.
In my years of extensive traveling (used to be on the road 80%+ for work) I never had a zipper break. They can be stressed to the point of breaking, I suppose, if you stuff the shit out of them. I would also think hard-side bags would be more stressed than soft-siders as there is no give so the zipper takes all the stress. If you are worried, buy one of those straps that goes around the suitcase. Then, even if it breaks, everything will be contained.
Everything you pack should do double/triple duty, all should be in the same color palette, some can be for both evening and day, bring one skirt for nice if needed. Try everything on before hand and make sure it’s comfortable and you like it. If you don’t wear it at home, don’t bring it. If it is not comfortable, you won’t wear it on your trip, no matter how pretty or nice it is. Shoes especially need to be comfy. Again, double duty…day time for walking and can work with a skirt (ballet flats in a backpack are great for flight time and skirt time). I think three pairs of shoes should work…more is excess weight, but you wont want to wear the same shoes every day. It breaks them down.
Leave all the liquids you do not absolutely need at home. Hotels give you shampoo and usually conditioner. I am bringing a travel size conditioner and the facial cleanser I like, plus a travel toothbrush and the toothpaste I like. Small face moisturizer will be in my 3-3-1 carry on as will any liquid makeup I use. Nothing else.
Bring pills (in original containers, especially if prescription). Bring Pepto pills should you need them. Better to have and not need a small bottle of pills than be sick and trying to get something in a foreign country.
If you buy a new suitcase, look for the ones that are the lightest weight. A 5 pound difference in the weight of the suitcase itself is significant. Airlines have overall weight requirements, too, so that bag weight becomes doubly important when you’re looking at a 50 pound max - depending on how long you will be gone. I am going for 3 weeks so I need more stuff than less, even with my planning on doing laundry.
I prefer the two wheeled rollers that tilt (because it is easier to piggy back my backpack on to those). The other ones are four wheels that all spin so you basically push it vs pull it. Watch the size and quality of the wheels. Broken wheels means you have to carry that sucker. I had that happen with my very first suitcase some 30 years ago…as that thing had small, shitty wheels - and one broke so I had to pick it up and run with it. And I brought half my house with me as a first time traveler. It sucked ass. I was on a train and carrying that suitcase made me swear like a drunken sailor.
Think of your activities and what you need to wear for those activities. Bring as little as possible (shopping opportunities!!) because a schlepping a heavy bag around is not pleasant.

Also: packing cubes. I used to scoff at these, but now I have two sets of Eagle Creek packing cubes. They really do help keep clothes organized and compacted down.
Unless the packing cubes fit well into the suitcase, I found they took more room than I liked. I only use them for tee shirts and bathing suits now.
One gallon ziplocks are great for stuff like socks and undies. Smoosh all the air out and you can fit all your undies in a flat zipper compartment. Big time space saver. Belts wrapped up in shirt collars is nice to keep the shape of the collar. Stuffing things into shoes is also a nice space saver.
Some things are good for cubes. I found not everything though. I tried.
Also, I roll everything (keeps from having to iron). The Korean (???) chick whom everyone loves (Marie someone I think???) says to fold small and stack things vertically instead of horizontally. I am going to try that except I am going to roll not fold and make sure that everything rolled is packed tightly.

Was hanging out with one of my best friends a couple days ago - guy I’ve known since high school and basically consider a brother - we both went to law school, and he was more tied into the conservative movement stuff than I was. So I asked him what happened to the Federalist Society and all he could do was just sigh. There were a few people on the inside that saw the current state of affairs coming, but as is often the case, the people raising the earliest alarms were seen as the crackpots rather than visionaries.

The hip and sternum straps really make a difference. Since I try to pack light, the pack is not too hard on my 63-year-old knees and ankles. Roller bags have their place, but for trekking around from place to place, they are more a nuisance than a boon. I only use my roller bag for my annual junket back to see the fam, and the smaller one for a short trip to some hotel somewhere in China..
I never used a hip strap but those sternum straps are FANTASTIC. It completely changes the weight distribution and make the backpack feel lighter.
I had one and cannot find it and I have not been able to find a cheap one that has it.

Another option is to send your stuff back to the States instead of lugging it back with you. There is a service called the Luggage Club that can arrange shipping. I looked into it, but their fees are too high. Using the local postal service or even UPS/FedEx/DHL would probably be cheaper.
UPS is ungodly expensive. I went to ship back a kitchen grill pan I bought (from Las Vegas to MI) and they wanted like $70. For a small package that weighed less than 10 pounds.

From the friend I traveled with last autumn I picked up the tip of going to thrift stores to pick up some things and then redonating them right before we left. For a 10-day trip in Oregon and Washington we picked up a cooler and some other gear the first day. And my friend found a very good deal on some beach shoes that she kept.
