re: #377 Romantic Heretic

Such people like nice, clear cut answers to everything. ‘The Great Intelligence wills it’ is nice and perfect.

Of course asking them what evidence there is of that Great Intelligence and what forces it used to create life will get a response of, “LALALALALALALA! I can’t hear you!”

But they’ll be the first to tell you they were ‘trained in science’.

There’s a reason Scientists are mostly liberal and engineers are far more likely to be conservative. Science is about uncertainty, about embracing the knowledge that even a p value below 0.05 doesn’t mean you’re not wrong.

A LOT of people are more uncomfortable with uncertainty than they are with being wrong.

I was discussing this with a friend who’s a biblical literalist, who told me his worldview was on rock solid ground because it came from God. I told him there is no God, and that the only thing one can be certain of is one’s own existence, and that we can each only infer that reality is in fact real. But if we treat it as though it were, it responds appropriately, so it’s a reasonable working hypothesis. He couldn’t understand how I could possibly tolerate that much uncertainty. He needed the certainty of a deity for the world to make sense to him.

The difference between the Mueller Report and a climate science report is that eventually the truth will out; science ignores whatever you believe; it continues according to the laws of nature and we cannot repeal the ones we don’t like.

Uncertainty is every day. Ask your friend if he knows what is coming next as far as his health, the weather, what others are going to ask of him, what accident he may be facing in the future, etc.?

It is all uncertain…and his God isn’t going to let him know either.

So what certainty does his intelligent God bring him? None.

He is basing everything on faith and faith has no certainty, only a hope. And everyone, believers or not, have hopes.

All religion is second hand, or more hands, removed information. Everything you think you know about your religion was taught to you by someone else contemporary.

How did they learn it to teach it to you?

It is all second and actually way more hands removed than two. You heard nothing and saw nothing yourself. It’s just what other people maybe saw and mostly just what they say that other people before them heard or saw or told them.

Even say you personally witnessed a “miracle”. Unless you critically evaluate and proved it then you don’t know there’s not a “normal” scientific explanation. Or maybe you were fooled by someone…hoaxed/punked.

Virtually all religion is an appeal to apparent authority. And not even that good authority.

Generation upon generation of interpretations of a questionable and multiple times translated and edited and reorganized book. Those interpretations and translations themselves were argued about and evolved over time.

and so the segue:

Most politics is the same way. People don’t “know” much. They heard or were told, or a friend said, or they read a web site, got an email, heard part of a speech or other questionable source… facebook, twitter, etc.

And so it’s all second or more hands, skewed, interpreted, and selectively so. They do not research or do critical thinking or analysis. Just second hand so-and-so said-so.

It all becomes a meaningless cult like following.

And that’s because the thought process is the problem, not just the gullibility. It’s due to the fundamental lack of desire to learn and know. There is no cure for this.

The polarization now (i wrote this in 2016) is just one particular example.

This is more than willful ignorance. It’s willfully being led by the nose manipulation or simply tell me what to think and I will.

So what certainty does his intelligent God bring him? None.

He is basing everything on faith and faith has no certainty, only a hope. And everyone, believers or not, have hopes.

In his case, he has certainty in the sense that he is absolutely certain that the god of the literal bible exists and that everything the bible - that is the KJV - is literally true. His certainty comes not from being right, but from choosing to believe, with no possibility of error.

He’s CERTAIN that he’s right. But being certain does not imply being right. He can’t tolerate the absence of such a bedrock, even though objectively it’s a choice on his part.

I haven’t talked to him in maybe 10 years, but we did talk a lot then (or type a lot, really). He struck me as a man who was too intelligent for his own beliefs. That is, a simpler mind than his could have simply accepted that his belief is a BELIEF. For him, it had to be THE ONE POSSIBLE TRUTH. He’d try to argue based on “the impossibility of any alternative”, but it was nonsense, because he had now way to disprove anything beyond “the bible tells me so”. And I think that wasn’t completely acceptable to him, but he’d learned to simply restate the whole ‘impossibility’ thing without any shred of proof.

Shorter version: one can be absolutely sure of something that’s absolutely wrong.

I’m more uncomfortable with the possibility of being certain while being wrong than I am of being right but being uncertain.

Others are more uncomfortable with the possibility of being uncertain.

Does Trump know that most of the large northern American cities and others like Houston, as BlueGirl21 pointed out, are sanctuary cities?

Most of the people that would support others like them, from the countries they came from too, are already there and ready to help the transition.

Those cities are mostly Democratic and progressive too.

So, where is the punishment?

It’s just Trump doing another demonstration to his base and pissing off people that may have voted for him who are learning about the monster he is. Politically it is stupid and may actually be damaging to the fat orange one.

Y’all, those taxes and financial records are going to end up in the hands of Democrats. They are leaving NO stone unturned. This is one of the reasons why Trump is freaking out.

Kyle Griffin
House Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings is moving to issue a subpoena to obtain 10 years of Trump’s financial records from accounting firm Mazars USA.

my daily reminder:
- the accountant-client relationship enjoys a kind of limited confidentiality (nothing that would help in this situation)
- there is no privilege as with lawyers and clients
- there is no sanctity as with confessions and other religious interactions

and unless they’ve done something so knowingly and horribly wrong that they want to keep those records buried, Mazars isn’t gonna want to pay their lawyers to fight this

A deity, unless it’s a cruel one, makes the universe make even less sense to me.

Exactly my position. If you believe in a deity that intervenes in daily human life, then you have to try to explain a lot of bad shit that happens to good people, and good shit that happens to bad people. Or you have to throw up your hands and say, “It’s a mystery! Trust in God’s Plan!”

But, you know, looking at the world, I’m thinking…

To me the universe makes more sense without anyone in charge. Or maybe there IS a god, but it doesn’t get involved in daily life. But in any case, I can’t bring myself to believe any of it - god, creation, afterlife, heaven, hell, whatever - even when I’d really, really like to be able to. When we lost Zeena, and before that Rhyo, I really, REALLY wanted to believe that one day we’d be together again. When Dad died last month, I really, REALLY wanted to believe he was with Mom someplace where they were healthy and happy and together again.

But I can’t do it. It doesn’t make any sense to me. And, really, I don’t want it to.

I read a column today that said news agencies that simply passed along the whole ‘punishment’ idea needed to consider how this is supposed to be a punishment. And the author’s right.

Most Sanctuary Cities are that way because they already have a lot of undocumented immigrants, and in their experience, they have been a net positive to the community. So how does it “punish” the Sanctuary Cities?

By the same token, immigrants would find themselves in a city with lots of other folks like them, where the local population welcomes them. So how does it punish the immigrants?

It only makes sense if you really do believe that “illegal aliens” are all raping, murdering MS13 members here to steal our jobs while living on welfare.

So, what might have happened in Jacksonville Beach this morning?

Police said the teen gave him a series of bogus names before he was eventually identified as 16-year-old Derrick L. Conner, who is not a student at the school or from Jacksonville Beach.

Conner was apparently dropped off in the area, though his intentions remain unclear. Police said the teen would not speak with investigators beyond providing fake names.

Conner was arrested on two counts of possession of a firearm on school property, one count of possession of a firearm by a delinquent juvenile and a count of giving a false name to police

Statement sent to parents by the school:

Today, our school safety officer approached a suspicious person who was walking on 1st Avenue. Upon investigation, the officer handcuffed him and he was taken to the police station for further questioning. This is a police matter. Please know our campus is safe and the security procedures in place were followed by all. We are so fortunate to have our Jacksonville Beach Police department on our campus and we so appreciate their diligence in keeping our students safe.

CarolJ  Apr 12, 2019 • 2:40:01pm

Also a lot of northern cities have half-empty or even empty neighborhoods due to white and black flight to the suburbs. Baltimore and Detroit are bulldozing blocks of empty houses. My city has several blocks of abandoned factories that could be razed and turned into places for new housing or even converted, And my city is a mid-sized Midwestern city in a now red state..

Plus, once people get settled, many will just go wherever there’s work, family, whatever. Indeed that’s what happened to most immigrants between 1876 and 1924. As long as you were law-abiding, willing to work, an immigrant could come and stay here. If you wanted to vote, stay 5 years, take an oath of allegiance and that was it. Indeed, back then a lot of the nationalization was based in the states.

So the cities will not be as stressed as Trumpkins think after a short period.

And even in the “big cities”, there are some blocks nearly abandoned due to suburbanization and because not enough people stay long enough to be profitable with rentals alone.

This shows once again the Trump’s Queens mentality. Never having been much beyond the circles of his bitter mentality in more than one way, he has no idea how big this country really is and how ridiculous this thing really is. We have miles and miles of nothing between urban oases, and some cities who have emptied out a long time ago.
Yes, he might try to refuse funds for temporary help, but if we can get the trifecta, and probably could get the trifecta-we can promise those states the needed funds. Also, once people can move on their own, they tend to disburse to whatever there’s opportunity.

Also, the cities are browner and blacker and more diverse than it was during the Mariel boatlift. The people most freaked out absconded towards the exurbs long ago. Those migrants won’t be coming out there unless it’s to work, so there won’t be the panic he thinks there will be.

They talk if people who want Sanctuary would be upset if a few more faces not speaking English show up as neighbors. Doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

re: #61 CarolJ

Well, even aside from the faux pas of using “Trumpkins” and “think” in the same sentence….

Isn’t the whole deal with “sanctuary cities” simply a matter of their refusing - on a municipal level - to cooperate with draconian Federal dragnets or citizenship-inspection dictates? I realize that reducing public issues to simpleminded caricature is only typical for the Trump Admin, but “sanctuary city” is not, AFAICT, necessarily a synonym for “law-enforcement-free zone”. Except, of course, to the Bigot Base…

Been saying it for years: reactionaries are trying to change the country’s understanding who gets to use lethal force and get away with it, and who gets to die without questions being asked.

Hence why “supporting the 2nd Amendment” involves simultaneously stretching the legal definition of when lethal force can be argued to be legitimate while maintaining a cultural definition of “what kinds of people are inherently threatening.” Hence why “government” shouldn’t be trusted and people should arm themselves to fight it…but any specific instance of police violence (or ICE violence, or prison abuse) can be excused because the subject deserved the harm.

At the bottom of everything, the only real rule is that the rules do no apply equally…and the law must be fitted to ensure that the right kind of people are not inconvenienced (even when they do horrible shit that is immoral) and the wrong kind of people are given no breaks.

And if he listens to Trump, he, and any officers who follow that, should just tattoo “Sucker” on their forehead. Trump will take the benefits of their law-breaking and leave them out to dry. Not to mention that they lose their pension benefits, jobs and anything else after they go to prison-or even before. That’s not even depending on a criminal conviction-civil findings that you disobeyed the law will be sufficient.

Trump won’t lift a finger to help them with that either, even with the pardon (which he will somehow “forget”) to issue, like he forgot with Manafort and Cohen and Assange and other people he used up.

This Mark Twain quote gets a lot of play but it’s rock solid wisdom: “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”

I grew up the only child of teenage mom whose shotgun marriage to my dad only lasted a couple of years in the 1970s in suburban New Jersey. There were a lot of downsides, and I could have ended up in a lot of bad places in life if not for winning the lottery of having loving grandparents who helped raise me and were able to take me on a lot of travel. Nothing influenced me as much as experiencing a large chunk of North America and a lot of foreign countries and cultures as a child and teenager.

If anything, it is to protect them from a methed-out big ass bubba in a bar fight over his woman and her new friend.

I still remember many a year ago, my one friend played drums for a country rock/western band. There was a fight that broke out at the bar way in back away from the stage which was up front by the main entrance.

The local cops came rushing in, they were only a couple blocks away on the same street. I remember three of them trying to bring down the big guy that was drunk and upset. He threw all three cops off him and literally drug two of them out the door. He was leavin’!

Paddy wagon and more cops showed up and took him away for a night or two. But it took a lot of guys to control the man mountain.

Maybe my concern is misplaced about someone on the left assassinating deplorables — it will be the “good people on both sides” who will decide to murder some on our side. Israel never recovered from the assassination of Rabin. When the racists and anti-Semites murder Democrats, or Jews, or African Americans, or Muslims, it’s a one-off crime that doesn’t need to be investigated further. Only the individual murderer (if even that) is charged and the evil that supports these crimes continues unabated. After all there is no white nationalist terrorism in this nation.

“Fuck Trump” should be inserted into the national anthem, the pledge of allegiance etc.

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all…and fuck Trump!!”

Yeah, I can get with that. ;)

Yeah, Quebec French and France French are very different. There are some French who strongly dislike the Qubecois and vice versa because of this.

Both ends against the middle.
Inside the Russian effort to target Sanders supporters — and help elect Trump

After Bernie Sanders lost his primary campaign for president against Hillary Clinton in 2016, a Twitter account called Red Louisiana News reached out to his supporters to help sway the general election. “Conscious Bernie Sanders supporters already moving towards the best candidate Trump! #Feel the Bern #Vote Trump 2016,” the account tweeted.

The tweet was not actually from Louisiana, according to an analysis by Clemson University researchers. Instead, it was one of thousands of accounts identified as based in Russia, part of a cloaked effort to persuade supporters of the Vermont senator to elect Trump. “Bernie Sanders says his message resonates with Republicans,” said another Russian tweet.

Yeah…the rest of Canada and Quebec have had a love/hate relationship for years. There’s long been a secessionist movement in Quebec and there was a referendum in that province in 1995 in which “Stay” won out but some of the resentment is warranted. Quebec likes to act bigger and more important than they actually are.

Years ago, near one of the main roads entering Quebec City there was a sign that said “Welcome to the National Capital”. However, Quebec is NOT the Canadian capital, Ottawa, Ontario is. Quebec is only a provincial capital.

The larger areas in Quebec tend to have separate Francophone and Anglophone communities that regularly clash with each other. It’s a long and complex (albeit fascinating) history when you dig into it.

Well, we’re back from two weeks in the UK and I was completely off-grid except for UK newspapers.

It was nice not having to get Drumpfed in the face 24/7.

We went to Duxford and saw an amazing display of airplanes. We went to the Tower of London, met some ravens and the Ravenmaster, and saw some ridiculously over-the-top jewelry. We saw a beautifully curated Picasso exhibit.

Then up to Edinburgh for a harp festival. Great music, great beer, a visit to the Surgeon’s Museum, where I learned about all of the arcane ways people can, and do, die. It’s amazing any of us have a peaceful death.

Oh, and by the way, if you think our system of government is just a complete disaster right now, you should see what is going on in the UK. It really is poultry in a hailstorm.

At this point the House of Commons couldn’t agree that food, clothing, and shelter are necessary for a decent life. Theresa May is just a ghost of a political corpse, desperately shuttling between Brussels and London, and getting the shit beat out of her by all sides.

All in all, watching a government even more dysfunctional than ours was oddly… calming.

We can move the needle, going forward, and make things better. Right now, the UK can’t.

If the Radical Left Democrats all of a sudden don’t want the Illegal Migrants in their Sanctuary Cities (no more open arms), why should others be expected to take them into their communities? Go home and come into our Country legally and through a system of Merit!

Who said we don’t want them in our sanctuary cities?

(Not that they’d necessarily stay there — relatives, friends, community members… but I expect we can spring for bus fare to get them where they want to go.)

Would they be counted in the census? Thus increasing our number of Congressional seats?
