Going to the Denver area tomorrow for a funeral. One of my best friend’s father, died of pulmonary cystic fibrosis. It was like watching a man slowly suffocate for seven years. He was truly good people, too. Gonna see some friends from childhood I haven’t seen in many years. My anxiety is heightened tonight.

“The Hollywood times - April 7, 2019
By Elizabeth Carbe and Jean-Pierre Durand
Antonio Rey and Diego Alvarez (Photo THT)
The Guitar Salon and eliteguitarist.com team up to present the explosive LA debut of a flamenco master
Santa Monica, CA (The Hollywood Times) 4/8/19 - Antonio Rey took the stage tonight at the Guitar Salon in Santa Monica with the cool and relaxed confidence of someone performing for a friend in their living room. His first-ever performance in Los Angles was to a packed house of guitarists and flamenco enthusiasts. Taking about four bars of his first piece to tune, Rey moved smoothly into the composition without missing a beat. If he was nervous, no one would have ever known. Over the next hour, he proceeded to easily blow away the stunned audience.
He performed every composition with flawless technique, his right hand relaxed and easily moving between picado and arpeggios. His technique was so formidable and offhand that his playing seemed as effortless as breathing. His left hand never hit a fret or missed a note. His little finger on his left hand appeared to have as much strength and dexterity as his first. Though his level of technical mastery mesmerized, it was his sheer musicality that that entranced the audience - a musicality that transcended his technique. We should mention that many leading lights of guitar in Los Angeles were in the audience: renowned guitarists Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah sat right in front of Antonio, and the great players Adam Del Monte and Armand Arnazzi were also in attendance in addition to many others. It was Strunz (himself a dazzling and masterful player) who commented after the show: “it was stunning - he never makes a mistake!” Rey left quite an impression.”

My free month of Netflix will be up in about 2 weeks… but I’ve already run out of things to watch on Netflix. I guess they just don’t cater to my interests.

Contemporary Netflix-type of productions strike me as being a bit too caught up into the big blockbusters, which almost always are very wanting as far as art. Mostly they’re just loud, colorful, and derivative.

Sure, Netflix has some original series that can’t be found elsewhere, but I’ve already gone through the Umbrella Academy … and the rest just don’t grab me.

Too bad I can’t give away by remaining two weeks to someone who might enjoy Netflix.

I’ll go back to watching lectures on Youtube.

Off topic but I can’t wrap my head around why Honda and Toyota are so fucking reluctant to go heavy into zero emission vehicles. They both have a shitty fuel cell (Honda also has a battery electric) compliance option that are lease only and only available in California and Hawaii. These cars only exist due to local laws demanding a specific small percentage of ZEV sales by large manufacturers to maintain access to the market and the lease only route is what GM did twenty years ago with the EV1 while working to repeal that law. What doesn’t make sense to me is that the new mandate obviously isn’t going away, and GM/Chevy, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Ford, VW, & Nissan have seen the light and are all making all electric cars that far exceed the minimal compliance standards, that you can actually buy outright, right now, nationwide.

So, what the fuck are Honda and Toyota thinking? I just never would have expected those two, once very innovative Japanese companies, to be so backwards in their approach to this technology.

I think that about Nissan too. Sure, they have the Leaf. But they ONLY have the Leaf. An all-electric Infiniti would be pretty nice. Tesla, with all its quirks and customer service horror stories won me over this time. I’ve been one of the lucky ones that got a good car, so I haven’t needed any service in 7 months. I’ll change my own brake fluid after I hit the 25k mile milestone. Other than that, and swapping winter/summer tires/wheels, I don’t foresee needing any service for a long while. Every damn car maker should be pushing full steam ahead into changing over to electric.

Really hoping Rivian is successful next year too. That pickup of theirs looks so awesome.

Yeah, my Dad’s Tesla has been really great, granted though it doesn’t get driven much. The only hiccup was when the passenger side rear door handle stopped presenting, and they immediately sent a technician out to fix it on site under warranty.

I am glad that they rebroadcast the entire original Star Trek Series to honor its 50th anniversary, and I like the latest Star Trek series, but that is about all.

And yeah, nothing is better to fall asleep to than a good You Tube WW1 documentary on the fall of the Hapsburgs or Verdun or Jutland…

Steve Bannon’s New Hobby: Try Overthrowing The Pope! (Goes to Wonkette, more at the link):

Former Breitbart publisher and Trump adviser Steve Bannon has found himself a new mission in life, according to NBC News. Bannon wants to “reform” the Roman Catholic Church the way he remade American conservatism, albeit perhaps with fewer memes of Pepe the Frog — that part is still being decided. But definitely with an eye to telling nonwhites to fuck off, and making Holy Mother Church a Safe Space for Nazis again. Except, does it have to be so feminized? Holy FATHER Church would be much better.

Foreign correspondents Richard Engel and Kennett Werner bring us the straight dope on Bannon’s dream of making Catholicism White Again, in a teaser report ahead of Engel’s “On Assignment” TV show scheduled for Sunday night at 9 Eastern. Bannon explains he has a perfectly good reason for wanting to rescue Catholicism from that mean old Pope Francis and his SJW agenda:

He’s the administrator of the church, and he’s also a politician […] This is the problem. … He’s constantly putting all the faults in the world on the populist nationalist movement.

Basically, Bannon’s goal is to make the Roman Catholic Church become more conservative, and thus more misogynistic and racist.

While Prof. Bouman’s constant uptalk was a little annoying, her presentation was really amazing. She’s from West Lafayette, Indiana, so I’m not sure where she picked up the “valley girl” tonality. But I quibble (I’m an English teacher, after all). Her contribution to this project was amazing. She’s only 29, so imagine all the other amazing stuff she’ll do in the future.

In other news, I’m nearly done preparing my taxes. Thank you, Foreign Earned Income exclusion and foreign residence exemption from the ACA. Another year of being a deadbeat and not paying US income taxes.

Still had to pay Chinese income tax, though. It’s deducted even before my salary hits the bank, so there is no paperwork to file.

They have BBC Earth videos.

Still find it hard to find anything on Netflix. They just don’t do an index. Like with Hulu. These outfits don’t expect users to actually look for something, but rather to be fed a stream of whatever the content providers want to push. It’s all part of the passive behavior that goes along with “TV” viewing.

re: #42 wheat-dogg, raker of forests, master of steam

Well, unless the GOP rodent copulation of the ACA is reversed by next year, the penalty will be gone (set to zero).

That said, that makes the case going through the courts now (claiming there is no penalty, so there is no tax, therefore the ACA should be struck down because it was upheld on the basis of taxation powers) makes even less sense. There is a penalty now (2.5% of household income, or $695 per person, whichever is higher). It would seem therefore even if it was a valid argument it is currently moot.

Moreover, a tax rate of $0 is still a tax rate.

Speaking of science and headlines, the recent discovery of a (probable) yet another human species is being misrepresented in headlines:

A New Human Ancestor Species Was Discovered in the Philippines

That title is misleading. There is nothing to suggest that the discovery in the Philippines should be called an “ancestor” to anything, including us.

Now whoever left those remains may have had children, yes, but the inference from the headline is that other human populations (even us) could call them “ancestor”, and there is nothing in the actual discovery to suggest that. Indeed, the bones discovered in the Philippines have some distinctly non-modern forms.

oh no, they have not run out of stuff. you are just being too picky! Have you seen BOTH seasons of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina? Actually, I kind of understand where you are coming from. They made a decision ages ago to mostly concentrate on original stuff, much of which I have no interest in. I keep it around because it really doesn’t take much to entertain me. Yesterday, there was the horse in the parking lot riding around on the unicycle with a cat on its back spinning a frisbee around on top of a long pole. “That will do, I guess,” I said.

Do the cat and raccoon get along with each other?

cats, raccoons and skunks are all the same animal, just in different costumes. my experience with cats and skunks is that they apparently are spawned out of the same litters, because they treat each other like long-lost siblings when they meet.

Until I processed the foreign residence section of the tax forms, I was scheduled to pay that $695 penalty. As a US citizen working and living abroad, I am exempt from the requirements of the ACA, as long as I don’t stay in the USA (or fly over the USA — go figger) for more than 35 days. That last stipulation — flying over US airspace — really gets my goat. IOW I could be flying into Vancouver, BC, but if the plane crosses over AK or WA, that counts as being “in the USA” and I have to report that trip on my tax forms.

And don’t get me started on the whole FATCA and FBAR sitch.

As I understand it, the $695 can only be collected out of withholding. It can’t be like a bill to be collected. Republicans saw to that. So fly as much as you like, just keep your quarterly payments at the bare minimum.

Just speculating, don’t know if the 35 day stipulation is consecutive or cumulative per annum. Assuming consecutive they may be prohibiting using a short flight out of and back into the US as a trick to beat the 35 day rule. Can’t think of another reason. People go to extremes to find loopholes.

If a person lives outside the country, then visiting in the country isn’t going to make a difference (and flying over it certainly doesn’t).

Someone living in Seoul and flying to Toronto (carried over US airspace and never landing here) is not avoiding the penalty on the ACA.

Moreover, US airspace includes things such as Pacific territories. Are they included?

Here is chapter and verse from the IRS:

To claim the foreign earned income exclusion, the foreign housing exclusion, or the foreign housing deduction, you must have foreign earned income, your tax home must be in a foreign country, and you must be one of the following:
* A U.S. citizen who is a bona fide resident of a foreign country or countries for an uninterrupted period that includes an entire tax year,
* A U.S. resident alien who is a citizen or national of a country with which the United States has an income tax treaty in effect and who is a bona fide resident of a foreign country or countries for an uninterrupted period that includes an entire tax year, or
* A U.S. citizen or a U.S. resident alien who is physically present in a foreign country or countries for at least 330 full days during any period of 12 consecutive months.

irs.gov

ACA insurance coverage is exempt according to these same residency guidelines. The last one I believe means 330 days in total, whether they are consecutive or not. Travel to other countries is also excluded, and does not need to reported, but if you fly over US airspace you have to report that trip on your tax forms. irs.gov

Someone who travels more than I do probably tears out their hair when it comes to this residency aspect of taxation. As it is, I only visit the States once a year for no more than 35 days, and other trips outside China have only been within Asia.

Reading the IRS regs, it seems being in transit does not count toward the 330 days. So, travel from Seoul to Toronto would not count toward “being in the USA” but stopping for a day in Chicago would.

wheat-dogg, raker of forests, master of steam  Apr 13, 2019 • 7:13:13am

The other aspect of US taxation that irks all of us expats is the expectation of the IRS that US citizens’ foreign incomes are subject to taxation by the USA. This really only affects people who make more than $100K, which is assuredly not me. The exclusion covers foreign earned income up to about $100K, so that’s how I manage to avoid paying US income tax. FBAR requires all signatory countries’ banks to report the accounts of US taxpayers to the IRS above a certain amount ($75K IIRC), and FATCA requires all US taxpayers to report all foreign bank and investment account balances over a certain amount. too. Again, this does not affect me, as a poor teacher.

Practically speaking, the last two requirements make it difficult for any American living abroad to open bank accounts, as most foreign banks don’t want to mess with IRS reporting requirements. Also, some national banking laws bar banks from disclosing private information about account holders to anyone, even to the IRS. So, Americans are sometimes refused accounts in foreign territories. China only recently signed the FBAR agreement, and its attitude is (as per usual Chinese practice) to pay the agreement only lip service. IOW, I doubt ICBC would ever bother to tell the IRS anything about my bank balance, even if it did hold more than $100K.

I like the control of a manual in Ohio winter driving. Also, I like the ability to allow the gearbox to help in braking, etc. too.

I know a lot of people say never to allow your transmission to slow the car. I’ve never had to do any trans work and haven’t even had to replace a clutch except on my second ‘81 Rabbit that has a seal on the input shaft break and it squirted fluid onto the clutch plate. When I put forth the bill on my village board to resurrect the office of marshal, it specifically limited the marshal’s duties to enforcing village ordinances.

When the “sanctuary city” issue was fabricated by FOX and conservatives, I considered a proclamation declaring the village a sanctuary city. As the board was majority Republican, I went instead with the ordinance to resurrect the marshal’s office - partly because we needed an enforcement officer for village ordinances, and by recreating that office the bill could limit that office’s duties. That had the same effect as creating a so-called sanctuary city, because now the county sheriff’s duties has been curtailed to enforcing county and state law.

EVs can do something similar, with regenerative braking. Basically, you use the electric motors as generators to recharge the batteries which simultaneously brakes the car.

I think that refers to the people living in a district.

Districts are apportioned based on the number of people living in them, regardless of whether they are citizens or not.

The court cases lost over the census to exclude people who are not citizens means those people will now be counted in the next census (as they have for all of the nation’s history).

That means moving people into so-called “sanctuary cities” increases the numbers of people counted in the census for a state’s population.

Right. Probably not helpful in the long run for Republican candidates.

Why should Radical Left Democrats in Congress have a right to retry and examine the $35,000,000 (two years in the making) No Collusion Mueller Report, when the crime committed was by Crooked Hillary, the DNC and Dirty Cops? Attorney General Barr will make the decision!

But Donny, no one is retrying anything. We just want to see the results of the first try.

It will take at least another generation before the GOP can expect to attract sizable numbers of PoC to vote for them. The party has made sure it’s seen as the party of grumpy old white men, no matter how hard Trump & Co use Diamond and Silk and Candace Owens as thin veneers for their racism.

Classmates from long ago are still reminiscing about school days on Facebook. I reckon they must be retired to have all this free time to reminisce.

Just had the 45th reunion last year which I had no desire to waste any time going to. The Facebook page is filled with posts about classmates who have died.

365 of us graduated in May 1973. We’re now down to 57 with the latest death from heroin. Sure is amazing how many in that dead rust bowl town died from alcohol, opiates, meth or AIDS…

I don’t know how many undocumented immigrants or asylum seekers Trump was suggesting be moved around to Democratic districts because there is a non-crisis at the border (but I’ll bet they would do everything they could to make sure any criminals actualy in those groups are the ones sent).

Nevertheless, anyone who sets foot in the country and remains here is counted in a census. It would seem that “rounding up migrants and sending them to ‘sanctuary cities’” would defeat the idea of weakening political power in those cities (since they tend to be in liberally-leaning states).

We figured since it was Spring, we’d do a little upgrade on our deck furniture. My wife ordered an outdoor day bed from Wayfair, and they delivered it quickly - in two days! It came in yesterday.

So while my wife was still at work, I figured I’d open up the box and put it together as a surprise for when she got home. But when I opened up the box, it looked like the box got dropped on one side, and there was a crack in the end of the frame. I sent a pic of the crack to my wife, who then contacted Wayfair about getting it swapped for an undamaged one.

When she got home and opened the mail, Wayfair informed her that our replacement day bed would be here on Wednesday. All good.

But the thing that floored me was at the end of the email, they said they wouldn’t issue a return authorization for the damaged one, saying we could dispose of it however we saw fit!

So I went out with a couple of clamps and a bottle of Titebond XL and glued the crack back together. So come Wednesday, we’ll have two outdoor day beds. The thing wasn’t ridiculously expensive, but it did cost a couple hundred bucks. I guess Wayfair figured it would cost more to ship it back and repair it and then try to sell it again, so we get a freebie!

Our town was hit by two tornadoes last year, and another during the recent blizzard (snow tornadoes, fun).

We had severe property damage around town, but no injuries whatsoever.

That is a dreadful statistic. Probably around 65% - 70% of the class should still be alive. No wonder so many in certain communities feel hopeless and think that the establishment has failed them — because it has. These people may turn to con artists and racists like Trump because they have no hope.

The Supreme Court will rule on this by June.

We have churros on every corner, but it’s a few hundred miles to Costco. Everything’s a trade-off.

We have a healthy amount of Mexican grocers and restaurants in Columbus because we also have a large Hispanic community. I think I can find some churros at the one market that has a little counter in the back where they sell some of their own prepared foods. I’ve never looked for churros because I wasn’t that aware of them.

And trucks! We have many Mexican and other Hispanic food trucks all over the city. Might find some on one of them too.

Modern transmissions have it all over the old slush buckets of back when. But they share one key flaw with them. Immensely complicated inside. That brings a lot of costs, from development to high mileage wear & maintenance. Just not having all that makes electric cars look really attractive by way of costs to run.

I wonder if anyone ever tried to put cnc actuators on a real clutch and shift mechanism on a good old style 5 or 6 speed manual transmission. Paddle shift with benefits.

Buy hey good for those people with rockin good Mexican food right at hand a long ways from the border. 25 years ago I was on the Boardwalk Atlantic City. Whatever that thing was, it was NOT a taco. Meat chili with liquid cheese in a taco bell shell. I laughed out loud at it, tossed it in the bin and ordered a chilidog.

“You tend to forget about the cameras,” Haaland said. “There’s never been a Native American woman in Congress. We finally have a seat at the table.”

As things have taken a darker and darker turn in our country, and really throughout the world, in the last two decades, I’ve come to see moral leadership as more and more important. I don’t think human beings are basically good or fundamentally bad, but they’re highly malleable. How they behave, even what they feel, can be influenced by whether they’re asked to be generous or resentful, welcoming or defensive, optimistic or angry.

Presidential Moral Leadership Really Matters, Martin Longman, Washington Monthly

I began my adult life as a secular-minded philosophy student, impatient with moral arguments and suspicious of leaders who spoke in moral terms. My initial problem with the Bush administration was that their reckless disregard for the truth prevented people from having reality-based conversations. I no longer see this as the primary threat we face. What I see now is a daily devolution of the basic goodness and generosity of our people. Every day this gets worse, the path to recovery back gets longer, and the prospect of societal breakdown grows.

Our next president will hopefully bring as much of the country together as possible, but what they absolutely must do is exert moral leadership to stem and reverse this tide. If they can.

You know, it occurs to me that a lot of people who indulge in the hero worship of vets seem to work from the faulty assumption that *all* vets are combat vets who are always on the front lines protecting us against the filthy, evil hordes that would destroy our freedoms, totally disregarding the fact that support staff who rarely even touch their weapons outside of basic and refresher training outnumber combat troops by a lot.

That’s not to say that support staff isn’t worthy of recognition, because they are every bit as important (and, often, even more so) as combat troops, but I seriously doubt that what I said above factors into the patriotism-by-rote that many in this country practice.

I think so. See what I don’t like is what I’ve seen from vets and their families that the media shouldn’t talk about celebrities who die suddenly or tragically. Veterans have had an impact in my life. I’m literally named for one but people like athletes, entertainers, etc have impacted me too.

If there were ever a case to be made for quick execution for people that are just irredeemably evil after proving without doubt of their crimes, this cop is pretty high on the list.

If he did this shit that’s in that tweet, who knows what he’s done on-the-job?

Then, as now, the area was covered with recently retired airliners, the civil counterpart to the military’s Arizona boneyard. In those days, they were DC-6s and Connies rather than 747s and Airbuses, but the process of chopping them up and recycling the material was largely the same. It bothers many aviation enthusiasts to see this, but I have never had a problem with it as long as at least some examples are preserved. The material is valuable and in the case of aluminum, for example, the environmental cost of recycling is dramatically lower than extracting it from raw materials. Some materials, like titanium, have strategic importance beyond their monetary value.

I was thinking about this the other night and did some checking. The British have always been quicker than the Americans to scrap old aircraft, which is generally a consequence of having a lot less space for it.
They were especially ruthless after World War II. Of the 6,176 Handley-Page Halifax bombers built, only a single example survives at the Imperial War Museum. The Miles Master trainer is completely extinct, with no survivors from the 3250 built. In contrast, there are at least 48 complete B-17 Flying Fortresses in existence (of 12,731), with several still flying.
The reason for this was not just the lack of storage. It also had to do with the perilous state of the British economy right after the war. Aluminum was a godsend for industry and every pound that could be recycled domestically was one less that had to be imported with scarce foreign currency. The many thousands of now-useless warplanes were little mines all by themselves.

A forensic artist used 3D images of the 4,000-year-old animal to build the model - complete with realistic muscle, skin and hair.

The animal is believed to have been the size of a large collie with features similar to a European grey wolf.

The skull was one of 24 discovered when the chamber at Cuween Hill was excavated in 1901.

It is believed the dogs were placed there more than 500 years after the passage tomb was built.

I was stationed with an Underwater Demolition Team (UDT) in the late sixties and early seventies. They took the most clearly psychotic team members and turned them into “operators,” soon known as SEALs.

I almost re-upped to be part of it. Glad I didn’t, although they promised me that if I did I could be on the Apollo Thirteen splashdown crew, among other things.

Likewise the US has 8 battleships still afloat as memorial ships. The largest WWII ship preserved by the UK is the Light Cruiser HMS Belfast. She probably only survived due to being still in service into the early 60’s and surviving without scrapping till the latter part of the decade when the economy had finally begun to recover. HMS King George V or HMS Vanguard were not so lucky and in the late 50’s to 1960 effectively steel mines.

I had to go look up the name, and found this:

According to TMZ, the Los Angeles Police Department has taken Kerry Lathan into custody at a downtown L.A. jail. Lathan had just been released last month after serving 20 years on murder charges when he went to meet Hussle outside his Marathon Clothing store.

Hussle had apparently invited Lathan to the store to give him fresh clothes before meeting with friends and family.

That’s when Eric Holder, who has been charged with fatally shooting Hussle, showed up and killed the beloved rapper on March 31. Hussle, whose birth name was Ermias Asghedom, was 33. Nathan also sustained injuries from the shooting that left him in a wheelchair.

However, one of the stipulations of his parole was that he could not associate with known gang members. According to police, Nipsey belonged to the Rollin 60’s Crips.

I’m just having trouble with them doing this to a white person. I doubt Dylan Roof will be told to stay away from white supremacist groups if he’s released.

The fact that the shooter’s name is Eric Holder is also astonishing.

The RNC has not yet responded to The Telegram’s request for comment on this most recent development.

According to a report Friday by Telegram reporter Tara Bradbury, sources say the man charged with interfering with human remains from the Conception Bay South cemetery was arrested last week after he allegedly attempted to boil the bones and drink the water.

The details of the allegations against Lucas Dawe, 20, have not yet been presented in court, but documents indicate he is charged with possessing human remains on April 5, as well as interfering with human remains the same day. Dawe is also facing a charge of breaching a court order.

After the incident, human remains were confirmed located along the T’Railway, near Foxtrap around 1 a.m. on April 6, after police responded to a call for service in the area.

The RNC’s major crime unit, in consultation with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, determined earlier this week the partial skeleton was “quite old” and not connected to any current missing person cases. Police said they were also not concerned about any potential danger to the public.

Defending her really is an easy choice and will be good practice for when things get really tough. If the party can’t stand behind her, someone as sure of herself as she is, how are they going to do it when someone really needs their help?
