If only they voted accordingly. But that’s not good for Trump. He’s going to come off as the extremist on the immigration issue and the Dem nominee as the moderate.

Despite the hardened political lines in DC, when polled, most Americans favor a “pathway to citizenship” or amnesty of some sort. They also, when asked, tend to think it should be easier to immigrate to the US.

Whole bunch of polling on immigration.

That’s what makes Cruz unique for a Texas Republican imo. Even Rick Perry wasn’t a total rwnj on immigration and in fact his presidential campaign imo stalled because he wasn’t cruel enough like Romney and Frothy.

Goes back to something I said last night or maybe a couple nights ago: immigration just isn’t high on the list of priorities for most people (even for second and third generation immigrants). It becomes important when the economy gets bad - but when the economy goes bad opinions on everything sour. So most politicians don’t really know how to talk about it in a way that generates excitement/support.

I think Castro unfortunately is having that problem since it is understandably an important issue for him but not for a lot of Dem base voters. I also think Julian hasn’t come across charismatic or exciting enough. I saw him on Maher. I liked what he was saying but he didn’t awe me either. And that’s too bad because I liked his 2012 DNC Keynote a lot. I still think you should consider him for a possible cabinet post but I don’t think he’s got the stuff to be the nominee or VP.

That pendejo… what’s most annoying about him on the issue (besides his own status as a second generation immigrant) is that his fellow travelers would try to deny him birthright citizenship because of his father’s citizenship and the fact that he wasn’t born in the US… even though his mother is/was a citizen.

21
HappyWarrior  Apr 17, 2019 • 2:42:03pm

It’s unfortunate that a lot of this is superficial because I like both Castro and Mayor Pete a lot and Castro in fact was in charge of a much larger city but Mayor Pete is the one who has risen in the polls and to his credit, he’s done it quite well.

I’d like to see him consider a Senate run. Especially if Beto ends up with a very good chance of being on the national ticket.

That’s what infuriates me about him and Rubio. Fucking WASPy Jeb had more of a heart on the issue. Granted Jeb’s wife is from Mexico originally but still Cruz especially since his father emigrated after Castro took power unlike Rubio benefited from a very liberal immigration policy with Cubans yet he still talks like he’s Bill the Butcher. Pendejo indeed.

I think his brother decided to run for the Senate spot. I think Julian should have ran for it though but Joaquin has been the more high profile of the two brothers the past three years. I like them both but I’m not sure Julian is ready for “prime time” if you will. I’m glad he’s running since he is along with Beto probably the best on the immigration issues and to me even though I’m third generation, that is an important issue to me.

I know a lot of people crap on the idea of candidate personality issues and coverage, but I think it’s actually important. A lot of what being the president involves is dealing with shit we didn’t expect. And so voters want to get a sense of whether they can trust the person who will be president when the shit hits the fan. I’ve honestly not seen much of him, but it appears that Mayor Pete gives people a sense that he can be trusted, and that probably has a lot to do with why he’s having a moment.

It is important. Some of my problems with Bernie are DEFINITELY personally related. I just don’t think personality should be the sole arbitrator. The whole “Who would you rather have a beer with” stuff and scoffing at people like Pete who I think could accurately be called intellectual. I think Pete has a lot to offer. I just don’t know if he can go from mayor of South Bend, Indiana to running the United States. I don’t doubt that he would run the country honorably and represent us well. I just don’t know if he’s ready for that yet. I do hope that if he’s not the nominee that this is the beginning of his career but I think he’s got the right stuff to be President one day. I just don’t know if that time is now.

Yeah if he fades out by the fall or even next winter, he’d be the frontrunner in that race and I think he would be foolish not to run for it. I have to say. I am impressed by the guy. Definitely caught my eye in the DNC chair race and he’s doing it again running for POTUS. I think he’s got a bright future. I think he will be our first openly gay President. I’ve seen enough movies to know that while this is exciting, it’s also a good chance for something bad to happen:

A new study by two Harvard researchers reveals the cosmos may have already deposited the first such far-flung visitor onto our doorstep five years ago in 2014, when a small meteor crashed into Earth near Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific. According to their research, this 1.5-foot-wide object most likely came all the way from another solar system.

I’m working a theory that an unredacted report would reveal that the reason Trump wasn’t indicted on obstruction was because there was some lone hold out in the jury. Can you imagine how damaging it would be if the Mueller report signals that the president would have been indicted for multiple offenses except that one jury member just wouldn’t pull the trigger?

It becomes important when the economy gets bad - but when the economy goes bad opinions on everything sour. So most politicians don’t really know how to talk about it in a way that generates excitement/support.

In general I think you are right. What is happening in my opinion is Trump is making immigration an issue and bringing more and more awareness to it and his cruel fumbling of it. I think he is going to end up having America sympathize with the immigrants and they will demand it be fixed and at the same time hold Trump responsible for it being broken.

It is terrible politics. Trump opened his big mouth, made a big deal of his wall and put himself in this mess. And he doesn’t have the political chops to do anything to fix it and he doesn’t have the balls to take the hit and back out.

It is so much like his businesses and so far everything he has done as President. A lot of bluster, a mess, a trial, a then on to some other thing acting the whole time like everything you touch turns to gold.

It is just gold paint. A Hollywood prop.

Federal Grand Juries are not the same as a court trial jury. Federal Grand Juries can have upwards of 30 members. The juries do vote on whether or not to issue an indictment. The DOJ Attorneys, who present the evidence to the jury, will then evaluate the resulting vote to determine the strength of their case. A strong vote, either to indict or not indict, will then drive their decision on proceeding or not. The US Attorneys can also question the jurors as to what are the short comings or strengths of their case.

One or two no votes may not have as much weight as in a regular court case with 12 jurors.

Years ago, I spent most of a day testifying before a Federal Grand Jury. That Jury had 24 members available that day. Also, in that case, the US Attorneys allowed the jurors ask the witness (me) direct questions.

WTF?
Trump’s army: More than 300 asylum seekers surrender to armed militia of ‘New Mexico residents, veterans and ex-cops’, after crossing the US border

Three hundred asylum seekers surrendered to ‘United Constitutional Patriots’
Armed militia group claims to be made up of New Mexico ex-cops and veterans, who patrol the border
One of the militia, Jim Benvie, recorded a group of migrants trying to enter the US on Tuesday
The group handed themselves in and Border Patrol arrived to process them
Benvie has documented the armed militia’s encounters with asylum seekers for the past two months
Border Patrol said it does not condone the group’s actions

Hard to tell what really happened here but the Daily Fail has obviously swallowed the vigilante gang’s version hook, line and sinker. One possibility is that the group realized they were busted and just decided to hang around until the Border Patrol arrived, with the goobers likewise hanging around pretending to have detained them by force. Another is that the migrants mistook the camo-clad gang for some kind of actual police or military patrol.

Can I just take this opportunity to say I really fucking hate anti-vaxxers?

I had my fill of them after I came down with the mumps in 2012.

An argument for herd immunity is that high vaccination rates protect infants, the elderly, and those who are immunocompromised.

The argument which I’ve never heard is even those who had a disease before can get it again.

Having had adult second rounds of chickenpox, scarlet fever, and mumps, I’m really not a fan of antivaxxers.

Anti-science bullshit is one of our leading exports.

Australia PM adviser says climate change is ‘UN-led ruse to establish new world order’

Tony Abbott’s business adviser says global warming a fallacy supported by United Nations to ‘create a new authoritarian world order under its control’
Climate change is a hoax developed as part of a secret plot by the United Nations to undermine democracies and takeover the world, a top adviser to Tony Abbott, Australia’s prime minister, has warned.

Maurice Newman, the chief business adviser to the prime minister, said the science showing links between human activity and the warming climate was wrong but was being used as a “hook” by the UN to expand its global control.

“This is not about facts or logic. It’s about a new world order under the control of the UN,” he wrote in The Australian.

“It is opposed to capitalism and freedom and has made environmental catastrophism a household topic to achieve its objective.” Born in Ilford, England, and educated in Australia, Mr Newman, a staunch conservative and former chairman of the Australian Stock Exchange, has long been an outspoken critic of climate change science.

Another in the “why we can’t have nice things” file:

Anti-immigrant [black] activists are reportedly trying to get liberal radio host Mark Thompson fired

Veteran progressive Sirius XM radio host Mark Thompson has been off the air for more than a week. The move came soon after a physical, videotaped altercation that took place in Newark, when an activist approached him after a community event and called him an “Uncle Tom” and a “sell out coon.” Activists with ties to the far right quickly seized on the video and are reportedly using the incident in an attempt to get Thompson fired from his Sirius XM radio show. The dispute stems from a larger campaign by black advocates to target a number of black progressives, including Joy Reid, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Roland Martin, Malcolm Nance, and the Rev. William Barber, among other Trump critics.

“If Thompson is purged on such a thin basis, it will encourage further mischief,” warned columnist Richard Rosendall in the Washington Blade. Thompson has hosted the show Make It Plain for 18 years, and his was among the first talk shows hosted by XM Satellite Radio when it debuted in 2001. (XM merged with Sirius in 2008.) He became the first black person in the U.S. to host a daily, national show on a progressive/liberal talk format. In 2013, Thompson was honored at the 104th Annual NAACP Convention in July 2013 “for 25 years of crusading journalism and outstanding leadership in furthering the work of civil and human rights.” (Full disclosure: I’ve been a fan of Thompson’s show for years and have appeared on it many times.)

The somewhat obscure group at the center of the conflict is called ADOS, which stands for American Descendants Of Slaves. They are a pro-reparations collective that’s active online. Thompson himself has long been in favor of reparations. But while appearing on MSNBC he criticized the group’s tactics for their exclusive focus on Democrats, which then made him a target of ADOS’s attacks.

While ADOS is pro-reparations, it’s also anti-immigration. “There is evidence that ADOS is actually advancing a right-wing agenda, and while it calls itself progressive, it pushes anti-immigrant views,” Media Matters noted this week. Specifically, Media Matters points out that ADOS’s cofounder serves as a board member of the right-wing front group Progressives for Immigration Reform (PFIR), which despite its “progressive” name is firmly anti-immigrant and has ties to Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), an extremist group run by white nationalist John Tanton. The Southern Poverty Law Center has tagged PFIR a front group for FAIR. The ADOS website praises President Donald Trump and former President Ronald Reagan for their policy views, while attacking former President Barack Obama.

Also, Ann Coulter is a fan, while other white conservatives have pushed coverage of Thompson’s altercation online.
