The fox news feed knows when to temporarily mute the sound:

Knowingly? So they unwittingly coordinated with Russia. Trump asked for Russia to help and his campaign met with Russians to do what exactly?

Bulkshit in Costco quantities is being spewed here, and no one should trust anything said until we see the full unredacted report.

This is all about spinning the narrative to favor Trump.

I noted the very careful, lawyerly language Barr used to say the Trump campaign did not actively or knowingly participate in Russian hacking, which might well be true. He did not say, however, whether the Trump campaign knowingly failed to report such hacking efforts or meetings with Russians discussing such efforts to the FBI or CIA. IOW, the report still paints a pretty bad picture that the Trump campaign allowed the Russians to meddle in the election, with the understanding (perhaps) that such meddling would probably benefit the Trump campaign.

Trump’s hands are not clean of this, no matter how much parsing of the English language Barr does.

Right, and Barr’s careful language during the presser suggests there is damaging stuff in that report, just not any clear evidence of deliberate cooperation between Trump and the Russians to hack the election. If we take the meaning of collusion = Trump told the Russians to hack the election, then yeah, he’s exonerated. I just realized that the ideal Russian ploy at this stage is over the next few month to reverse the polarity of their manipulation and to start supporting Sanders to win the nomination and election. They have pretty much compromised the GOP completely, so now time to play games with the other party and finish tearing the edifice down. And the Bernie-bro compliment will swallow this stuff wholeheartedly while I also suspect that the Sanders campaign will also be Trump-ish enough in trying to gain power to look the other way and take whatever they are given.

It really does seem like America is now a sitting jury about to get the facts of the case to render a verdict on Trump.

But before everyone is read the judges notes, the procedures and are sequestered, the prosecutor, a friend of the guy on trial, enters to tell you all about the guy being really bummed he is on trial and he really is a good guy that got himself into a wee bit of trouble due to his ignorance of the law.

And the prosecutors expects us to find him not guilty because that is just how it is.

Remember, Barr took his position because the Republicans in the Senate voted to put him in there.

Given that, there is no reason to believe that even if impeachment charges pass the House, even with good evidence, that the Senate will remove the President.

Here is the political task for the rest of our lives: make our elected officials accountable for their actions.

The Trump regime has gotten high off their own stash. They’re acting as if facts don’t matter, only the spin. “Alternative facts” and all. I don’t think it’ll hold up this time. Mueller’s report will be the primary text in black and white that they’ll get hammered on over and over again. I think they’ve trapped themselves because the report itself can only be so much worse than the “nothing to see here” claims of innocence.

Human nature comes into play. Tribal dynamics and such. It’s like a sports championship, or Mission Accomplished. Once you declare “game over” even your own side starts to wonder if you could’ve won bigger or spikes the ball. I think the couple of weeks of triumphalism from the MAGA tribe will have sapped their ability to handle what’s coming next - the real questions finally, based on and quoting the real report. Now the game actually begins.

But I think this saga has gotten bigger than politics, and that we may well crack the GOP down to the 27% crazification coalition from its 40%ish support today. Here’s my thought. I think most people know how they’re going to vote in 2020. Trump isn’t going to have a 9/11 moment where he gains the trust of people who may not have trusted him before then. People know how they feel about Trump and from what I can gather most people don’t like it and want to give him a second term. I think most of the Dems running can beat Trump but to me what needs to happen is not only to beat Trump but to ensure that we don’t get a 2024 or 2028 situation where amnesia sets in and the holier than thous that do exist on our side forget why we need a Dem executive in the first place.

Pretty much what I was going to say. The far left continues to believe deeply that the DNC is corrupted by “the establishment,” that Bernie would have won if Hillary had not “cheated,” and so her loss in 2016 was solely due to her being such a poor candidate.

For those who may not remember those immediate hours and days after Election Night ‘16, the far left was absolutely gleeful over the results because they believed it would be the “Come to Jesus” moment they’d been waiting for. That the DNC would see that “establishment” candidates like Hillary were losers and embrace Bernie’s style of “progressive” politics. Which is why when the initial questions about Russia’s involvement began, they joined the far right in asserting that it was “sour grapes” and that the whole “hoax” was an attempt by the Clinton campaign to make excuses.

I think it’s also that they don’t want to admit that their disappointment with Bernie not being the nominee allowed them to be used. No one likes to admit being maniuplated and the far left in this country was willfully or not manipulated by Russian propaganda to see HRC as being no different or even in some cases worse than Trump. The people who push it like Greenwald? I think Greenwald’s motive is financial and I think he has a genuine hatred for the liberal establishment. Why that is in specific, I don’t know but he’s not doing this for ideological reasons. He’s doing it for Glenn Greenwald reasons.

Yeah I think if Mueller was going to let Trump off the hook for obstruction, it would be pretty clear. A note to Trump and his lackeys but Nixon wasn’t done in by the Watergate Burglary itself, he was done in by covering up the fact that people in his inner circle knew and authorized it.

Exactly. And that’s something that every Democrat needs to bring up when this is discussed. Yeah we don’t know for sure whether Trump and his team actively conspired with the Russians but we do know that the Russians interfered in the election and guess what, Trump hasn’t acknowledged that once. And that definitely speaks to his credibility. IMO the reason why Mueller’s conclusions are incomplete is exactly because of the obstruction that even Barr acknowledges was done. The difference between my opinion and Barr’s is Barr believes it was okay for Trump to do what he did because he was upset and anyone who knows anything about anything knows that’s a load of shit.

We need to defeat Trump, yes but we need to defeat the forces that made Trump possible. I don’t know what the next Dem president should do with Russia but I would do anything possible to weaken Putin’s presence where he’s grown stronger in the years since Trump took over. I would also like to give him a taste of his own medicine too.

Way too early (and/or too optimistic) to start talking about post-Trump politics (we should definitely wait til that chicken has hatched before starting discussing recipes) - but one thing that should be kept in mind is that dealing with Putin will be a lot easier than dealing with the domestic political forces Trumpism has summoned up from the swamps.

Reviving/revamping our nation’s foreign policy is probably much the easier part, IMO: all the next President has to do (whatever the actual policies entail) is refrain from conducting our relations with the ROW on Trump’s program of insults, resentments, grandstanding and cheapjack posturing. Amazing what a little positive PR might be able to accomplish…

But on the domestic side, I think that no matter what the next Administration may be able to accomplish (which may be a considerable lot - and positive), it will have to come at the cost of alienating (still more) that 27% crazy-factor “fringe”. Who sadly, will
still be with us - and even more pissed off at not having “God’s Anointed” in the WH….

I’d go so far as to say since it is now known Russia meddled in the election we must assume Trump is not a legitimate president based on the closeness in voting in key states and the fact that Clinton won the popular vote.

Whether caused by Trump or not, that election was rigged in his favor. That is established fact.

re: #246 makeitstop

There’s enough evidence in this report that Mueller says that it’s up to Congress to act.

That means that it’s up to Congress to impeach and consider removal. Let’s not dance around this. There are clear grounds for impeachment, and 10 acts of obstruction are 10 acts too many. One could argue that Mueller has lumped together multiple incidents to get to just 10, but even if you make that argument, Trump’s actions taken together constitute impeachable offenses (as I’ve long held).

Nothing in this report exonerates Trump in the slightest.

In fact, on the issue of conspiring with Russia, it couldn’t make definitive conclusions, but rather that Trump and his cronies were either too stupid or duped into benefiting from Russian interference? That’s damning with faint praise. You didn’t conspire because you were too stupid to realize what you’re doing? Ummm… conspiracy doesn’t work that way, but the obstruction as to what actually happened is the more easily proven path to impeachment.

256
Backwoods_Sleuth  Apr 18, 2019 • 8:39:22am

That’s very true. See the blip about Sanders supporters contenting themselves with the idea that Bernie could win the nomination with only 30% of the vote despite the fact that they think HRC who got a higher percentage of the popular vote against Bernie than Obama did against HRC 11 years ago “robbed” Bernie. They’re very undemocratic and they’re definitely willing to use undemocratic and unscrupulous means to get their far left vision. I don’t know if we’re less educated than the average country. The Brexit propaganda worked on the Brits and it’s worth nothing that unlike Brexit, more people (just not enough) people voted for Clinton over Trump. I think the Russians have discovered how to push people’s buttons. That’s the advantage of having a former spy as their commander. Given what we’re seeing, the answer would be “Yes.”

Right. Because that’s how it works. If you elect a gay person, literally everybody becomes gay. Just, gay, right there. Men, women, children, babies, pets, trees. Everybody, just gay gay gay all day. The whole nation. Gay.

Dominionism: the belief that we enjoy God’s special favor as a nation because our laws embody (their bigoted, backwards and narrow-minded view of) God’s Divine Will

Allowing things that are (in their fundamentalist view) abominations unto God, such as abortion, homosexuality and socialized medicine are simply invitations for God to not only cancel our Most Favored Nation status, but to open up a big can of ass-smitin’ all over us.

Of the women running, the one I think that has the best chance honestly is Harris.

She is second in donations to her campaign. She is doing well in her appearances. And she is under the media radar even though she is doing well. She is stronger than many want to admit. I expect her to be strong in debates as she does have that prosecutors background. I think she can eat Bernie’s lunch if given the chance.

Well, AFAIK, the real answer is that in their particular/peculiar “worldview”, “Israel” is less an actual state/country with actual people and actual laws, than an abstract concept; and whose people are also - mostly - slated for the Big Cosmic Incinerator when the Last Day dawns (or sets, or whatever).

There is no way an all-female ticket could win in modern America. A woman of color balanced by a traditional white male like Bennett would be very competitive.

As others have said, I think Mayor Pete might be aiming for Indiana governor and this race will definitely boost his profile.

- the president, directing his aides to do illegal things, is most likely in violation of the law

- even if the aides chose not to carry out his orders

- that seems to be the conclusion of ‘legal analysts’: the person issuing the illegal orders is guilty whether the orders are carried out or not.

- and once again, as I just said in 376, NOT ONE OF THEM TOLD ANYBODY and nobody quit on the spot.

I can see you are not a Mayor Pete fan. Is he a little too perfect and pat?

He does seem to be a boy scout.

I heard someone the other day say he is perfect for women!

That made me cringe.

No, I am not. First, he is not qualified to leap from small city mayor to president. That he believes that he is speaks to me of narcissistic privileged white guy arrogance that I am sick to fucking death of. Yeah, admitted bias there.

Much more than that though, is not what he says but what he DID as mayor, his priorities. He did some (arguably) good stuff in revitalizing but much of it at the expense of poor POC, fining them thru code violations that cost them their homes.

His focus even now appears to be WWC, too much like Bernie, as evidenced not only by what he says frequently but by his interest in a Fox news town hall. Frankly, any Dem candidate who does this is disqualified to me. Too many people for too many years have spent thousands of hours of their time to diminish Fox destructive influence by going after its advertisers, successfully so, to see it all undone by Dems now. This is a flat-out okay to advertisers to return and a fuck you to dedicated Dems.

That’s a start.

That’s definitely fair especially about going from small town mayor to POTUS. I have to admit. It does bug me that he’s gotten tons of focus while Julian Castro who was mayor of a large city and was in charge of a cabinet department gets no attention. And you are right about the woe is me stuff for the WWC. That does rub me the wrong way too. And I wasn’t aware of that stuff that happened during his mayoralship so thanks. The only election I know of where there wasn’t fishy business where the candidate who lost the PV but won the EC was 1888 with Harrison and Cleveland and Cleveland won his famous non-consecutive second term four years later anyhow. The others: 1824, 1876, and 2000 were full of fishy shit.

I just get tired of hearing about woe is the working class white especially the whtie working class white male. I hate to sound dismissive but those guys aren’t going back to us. That Donny is sitting at the White House, still with a big shit-eating grin on his face because he believes that Barr totally hit it out of the park this morning and the public believes he’s been exonerated…

We will know soon enough. Certainly the Trumpers want to believe this is Story A where Trump is in the clear and Barr did his job as AG. But I suspect the reality is B because Trump knows that the Dems want Mueller to testify and I don’t think there’s anything Barr can do to prevent that.

it’s identifying the right states to get to 270, with the least number of votes
i know that’s kind of obvious
i just wonder if it could get to 5m or even 10. and im guessing not

That reminds me Easter is coming up:

Hundreds of male Catholic devotees in the Philippines marked Maundy Thursday, a Christian holy day, with a bloody ritual that involves self-flagellating to honour the suffering of Jesus Christ on the cross.

The devotees, their faces covered with red or black cloth, walked along busy streets while beating their bodies with chains and whips.

The men prayed and laid on the ground as they were hit on the back with wooden paddles.

The Filipino devotees believe the painful ritual will help them atone for sins and allow them to ask for favours from God.

The ritual is often discouraged by Catholic Church officials.

Don’t have time now to look in detail but it’s theoretically easy to get 10+ million more votes — what if Hillary won by 80% in all states that she won — and she also won Pennsylvania and Michigan. It could be a landslide popular vote victory, while losing the electoral college.

While the EC was originally created in order to give Southern states more votes by counting non-voting Black slaves as 3/5 of a person, it currently functions by counting residents of sparsely populated non-coastal Western states as 5/3 of a person.
