For long-standing reasons we won’t go into here, I have a sort of understandable aversion to gingers with lots of facial hair, but hey, this guy can play. Watch out for the dissonance.

From the previous thread on Washington state rep Matt Shea:

re: #329 DodgerFan1988

But but it’s Antifa, Black Lives Matter, and the Democrats are the real terrorists!

That was the guy who put out a pamphlet in eastern Washington on how to start a religious war in the USA to kill Muslims, Jews, atheists, and other non-Christian religious believers to bring about a Christian State.

Don’t dare ever tell them they are just like Daesh supporters though. Old Testament law interpreted by fundamentalists is totally different than Sharia law interpreted by fundamentalists.

Every time I see this take on a “Christian State” from a Christian, it makes me want to break their bones one at a time. Jesus EXPLICITLY STATES that He didn’t come to set up an earthly kingdom. So why in the EVER-LOVING FUCK do these people persist in trying to do so?

A New Mexico man belonging to an armed group that has detained Central American families near the U.S.-Mexico border was arrested Saturday in a border community on a criminal complaint accusing him of being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition, authorities said.

The FBI said in a statement it arrested 69-year-old Larry Mitchell Hopkins in Sunland Park with the assistance of local police. New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas said in a separate statement that Hopkins was a member of the group that had stopped migrants.

[…]

The other 3 need to be arrested, too.

What about a strategy of including suicide in each discussion about guns? The availability of guns is one of the greatest dangers to anybody who ponders it. It can be very difficult to talk about around those already traumatized by guns, because of the power of inadvertent suggestion. Dangerous to do, and dangerous to NOT do.

I’ve heard plenty of conservatives bat that one away with “well, if someone wants to kill themselves they’ll find another way to do it.”

If you narrow it to just veteran suicide it becomes “well, we need to give veterans more support” (then they vote for Republicans who do the opposite of that).

I’ve had that conversation in person with people here. Those are always the two answers.

But liberals are the brainwashed parrots who engage in groupthink.

What I find amazing is he’s so obviously uninterested in being President for all Americans. He legit views half of us as his enemies. And that’s not a vibe I got from the Bush administration. Yeah they were very dismissive towards critics but I don’t think W viewed us as adversaries.

He exactly did, and said it on television more than once. “You’re either with us, or you’re with the terrorists.” Maybe you were speaking of a different Bush?

Reagan before he went into surgery after he was shot: “I hope you’re all Republicans.”

Republicans have been building the “us vs. them” mentality for over a generation. It’s very intentional.

Another mid-century food atrocity. Edwards hosted Truth or Consequences on radio from 1940 to ‘57. This probably dates from the latter part of that period, when tuna and mushroom soup were all the rage in contrived suburban cooking. At least there’s no jello in it.

Karl Rove looked at Sanders performance on Fox, and thinks Trump may actually have something to worry about should he come out of the Thunderdome: Republican Strategist Karl Rove says Bernie Sanders could beat Trump in 2020

Republican strategist Karl Rove, the man behind both of George W. Bush’s successful presidential campaigns, thinks Democratic contender Bernie Sanders could beat Donald Trump in 2020 to become the next president.

After watching the Vermont senator’s Monday Fox News town hall, Rove complimented Sanders on Fox and Friends Friday, saying participating in the event was a “smart move on his part.” He was also impressed with the response Sanders got, saying, “Bernie comes on to Fox, and gets the largest viewership of any campaign event thus far.”

Rove’s appearance on Fox News followed an editorial he wrote for the Wall Street Journal, in which the former White House deputy chief-of-staff argued Sanders proved himself a “serious contender” during the town hall because of how he directly answered questions — from both the moderators and the audience — about his tax returns, health care, and his electability in the large field of Democratic candidates vying for their party’s nomination.

Sanders also won over his audience. When the moderators asked the town hall’s participants to raise their hands if they were in favor of Medicare for all, something President Trump has criticized, and a fair number of audience members raised their hands hands, cheering loudly. This visibly surprised the Fox News anchors.

This reaction, and Sanders’ performance overall, has Rove thinking Trump needs to keep an eye on Sanders.

After seeing his performance Monday, Rove doesn’t believe the Democratic primary will work in the same way it did in the last election. In his Wall Street Journal piece, Rove said beating Sanders by attacking his democratic socialist views “won’t be as easy as Republicans may think.”

And according to the strategist, Sanders is increasingly on the minds of Trump campaign officials. “Some of the Trump campaign people said ‘You know what? We’re paying attention to this guy,” Rove said. “We’ve got to take him seriously.’”

I think he could win. My concern has never been his electability. It’s how he would govern.

Yeah. It’s a fair point but I still don’t think with that exception Bush saw his critics as the enemy. And tbh I meant his personal enemies. I never felt that Bush thought the critics of the war were as bad as Al Queda. The Reagan example though was Reagan joking and OA you know how I feel about Reagan so me defending this makes me feel icky but I can’t compare Reagan’s post shooting joke to Trump repeatedly treating his critics like enemies.

I only brought it up because the original point was over political party us versus them and whose side are you on. “W” used the war to cross political party lines.

I had a friend that was very anti-Vietnam and even registered for the draft as a CO. But he totally became unhinged and was a bomb ‘em all and sort it out later type after 9/11. He was all in on Bush even though he didn’t vote for him.

I saw it as being unquestioning and I think jumping into something like a war unquestioning as dangerous.

I think Charles has talked about some of that in the early days here and how that shaped this board for some time and then in ways caused issues later on.

Just another exampled of how people can be split up and group think can cause problems.

Right. And as I recall Bush’s statement was in the immediate aftermath of the most devastating attack on our soil since Pearl Harbor. I can’t defend that rhetoric but I understand why emotions were high in that time too. And as I said, I really don’t feel Bush saw his critics as enemies. And I don’t think Reagan did either. Doesn’t change them being bad Presidents but I think it shows how particularly autocratic Trump is in his basic philosophy.

Good evening Lizards.

Visiting brother in western NY for the weekend and mainly being rained on. It let up earlier today, which was good since we were working in the university’s arboretum planting trees and shrubs and putting up a “bee barn” to hold smaller “houses” that in turn hold reed tubes that the native mason and leaf-cutter bees can use to make nests. Repurposed wood (an old fence) and good for the nearby plants that need pollination.

We approve of this message!

Cooking for the holiday has been vegetarian for the most part. We made curry (eggplant and mushroom, good load of chile peppers as well) and homemade naan yesterday and it turned out quite well.

Methodists and Unitarians are both heartily disliked by the wingnuts because they’re generally non-dogmatic and fairly liberal in a lot of ways. A lot of John Wesley’s writings are on helping the poor and a general rejection of the pre-ordained Calvinism dogma. (Which is the key to the prosperity gospel crap the wingnuts espouse so heavily as their justification for acting the way they do.)

Yeah tolerant I think is a better word. I don’t think of Methodists as ones to engage in disowning gay relatives or biblical justified racism. I mean they still oppose SSM I know but they seem less extreme in general.

I live in extreme eastern Kentucky wingnut Libertarian/GOP/CoalisKing country and there is not one single business in this area where a proprietor would spout off like that to a customer, or even allow an employee to do so.

While I hardly held as high a political position or education as AOC, he knows I’m also in the DSA.

This is the same guy who thanked me for helping defeat a village sales tax, which he felt would hurt his business. (I am not a fan of flat taxes.)

Flat taxes are such a sham. It’s for people who think the average is a good universal measuring tool.

I take that back.
The one physical therapy clinic in this county has a TV in the main waiting room/treatment area that is set to Fox. One of the therapist there was a loud wingnut 2nd amendment loon and one of the regular patients was an equally loud”Methodists are all going to hell” Xtian.

I decided to tough out my pain without their assistance (which was mostly paid for by our ebil union insurance).

Such places are where (if you can’t avoid them) owning a TV-B-Gone universal shutoff device is helpful.

Washington Monthly has two articles that hit different looks at the Mueller report.

Martin Longman wants to know where the Counter Intelligence Report is.

The Mueller report isn’t actually close to a full account of the investigation by the special counsel, Robert Mueller. That’s not just because of the redactions. When he was hired, Mr. Mueller inherited supervision of an F.B.I. counterintelligence investigation. That is the missing piece of the Mueller report.

Nancy LeTourneau points out that we never learned the full extent of Nixon’s crimes. By resigning, he kept a lot of things secret.

One of the most memorable scenes [in All The President’s Men] is when Woodward, played by Robert Redford, meets with Deep Throat, who counsels him to “follow the money.” But I had forgotten about the scene in which those two had a subsequent meeting.

Lutheran Church across the street update (I’m sort of like Gladys Kravitz since I can pull my curtain here and watch what they’re doing over there):

A few folks just arrived to prepare the church for an Easter Sunrise service in the morning. Since I have lived here they have never had sunrise service on Easter (they normally hold church services at the normal time).

Someone came across the street and asked if I would like to come to church (no thank you). I offered to move my car to the front of my house. Normally I park between the church and my house, but on days when the church expects a lot of people I move it so they can have an extra parking space close to the church.

Cue wingnut butthurt (but we’re the real snowflakes - I even have a snowflake pin on one of my hats so it must be true):

Laura Loomer Filed A Lawsuit Against Twitter Based On A Prank Someone Played On Her (goes to Wonkette, more at the link):

This past November, far right dingbat Laura Loomer was finally kicked off of Twitter after tweeting a bunch of crazy ass hateful shit about Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. To put it mildly, she was not happy about it. In fact, she kind of lost her fucking mind (what was left of it anyway) and ended up handcuffing herself to Twitter headquarters in order to protest the ban. She’s been yelling about it ever since — though since she’s not on Twitter, few have even noticed.

Filled with desperation and with nowhere else left to turn, she is bringing her case to court and suing Twitter in hopes that a judge and jury will force the social media company to give her back her account so that she can continue to use it to scream horrible things about Muslim people all day long. This is what she is currently doing on Instagram, where she just recently went on a charming rant all about how much she hates Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar (yes, again), stating that Islam is a “cancer” and that “Muslims should not be allowed to seek positions of political office in this country. It should be illegal.”

re: #123 garzooma

Thanks for pointing this out. Definitely something Congress has to look into.

This from the lawfareblog: lawfareblog.com

This is direct from the Mueller report:

From its inception, the Office recognized that its investigation could identify foreign intelligence and counterintelligence information relevant to the FBI’s broader national security mission. FBI personnel who assisted the Office established procedures to identify and convey such information to the FBI. The FBI’s Counterintelligence Division met with the Office regularly for that purpose for most of the Office’s tenure. For more than the past year, the FBI also embedded personnel at the Office who did not work on the Special Counsel’s investigation, but whose purpose was to review the results of the investigation and to send—in writing—summaries of foreign intelligence and counterintelligence information to FBIHQ and FBI Field Offices. Those communications and other correspondence between the Office and the FBI contain information derived from the investigation, not all of which is contained in this Volume. This Volume is a summary. It contains, in the Office’s judgment, that information necessary to account for the Special Counsel’s prosecution and declination decisions and to describe the investigation’s main factual results.

This is Wittes parsing it:

In other words, the Mueller probe was a criminal probe only. It had embedded FBI personnel sending back to the FBI material germane to the FBI’s counterintelligence mission. But Mueller does not appear to have taken on any counterintelligence investigative function. And the report is purely an account through the lens of the criminal law. This partly, though only partly, explains why is no classified information in the report, which contains no “portion markings” anywhere.

This point has a major analytical consequence for the entire way one reads the Mueller report: Don’t assume it answers counterintelligence questions. Where it concludes that someone didn’t engage in a conspiracy, don’t confuse that with answering the question of whether there is some counterintelligence risk associated with that person. Instead, read the report only as an account of the disposition of the criminal questions associated with L’Affaire Russe. But keep in mind the following question as well: If I were an FBI counterintelligence agent and I knew this material, how concerned would I be about the individual in question?

One of the first trips (mid 70s) I took with my husband was to visit a friend and business associate in Taos. He took us to dinner at a small basement “diner” that was for townspeople only. No sign. THAT was my introduction to “Mexican” food. After that, I never set foot in a Taco Bell, or any such imitation.

Well, Friday night was interesting…

I was supposed to attend a Seder at my brother’s. Who is on the far side of my urbanizing county.

However, the Seder was supposed to begin right around Friday evening rush hour. And we were forecast to get a lot of rain, thunderstorms, associated flooding, high winds and ‘possible scattered tornadoes’. I made a command decision that I was uninterested in participating in heavy rain and thunderstorms while sitting in a Friday evening traffic jam on I-495. So I sent my regrets.

Apparently, since I did not go to the weather, it came to me.

About 8:55 there was a very heavy gust of wind. Except, it did not stop, as gusts tend to do. I could hear the wind throwing debris against the outside of my house. After a period, it stopped. So I figured it was safe to go out and see what was going on.

I had almost reached the door when my cell phone blurted out a warning that a tornado had been detected in my area. And that I should seek shelter immediately. My first thought was “Well, that was useless”.

Anyway, apparently a very small tornado had traversed a path 100-200 yards from my house. Nobody was reported hurt. I fortunately escaped without any damage.

According to reports, a bunch of trees and branches were knocked over. A few fences were knocked over. Several streets were blocked by falling trees.

By morning, the report of multiple destroyed cars had gone to one parked pickup squished by a falling tree. And the report of multiple destroyed houses had gone to one house hit by a fallen tree.

Reminded me of my time, many years ago, in Ft Sill, Oklahoma.

One storm hit early afternoon, and fortunately no tornadoes hit directly where I was. Although, there was a point when the sky went from pitch black to a glassy green and everything got deathly still. The front finally ended right at sunset. The setting sun returned right at that point. It was shining from the narrow window in the clouds on the horizon of the very flat plains. And the sunlight was polarized by this.

I saw that tweet and my first thought was that it was unlikely that the Senate was going “to pass voting rights, immigration, healthcare, etc?” in this congress. Which was, I think, Stonekettle’s point.

To the bigger point, the House Democrats are going to need to pass good governance legislation, even if it withers in the Senate, investigate the living daylights out the current administration, and make sure that the American public understands the results of both these efforts.

Bethel Church of Redding, California is one of the nexuses of independent Charismatic churches in the USA. They have an outsize influence because of their Bethel Music label, the band “Jesus Culture” and the unaccredited “‘Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry.” They’ve been on my radar for a while now and I’m on one of their mailing lists.

What I didn’t expect was that I was going to get an email on Thursday from Bethel Redding promoting conversion therapy.

But I did. Since then I’ve gotten a number of requests for the email, which also includes a promotion for the execrable lying piece of trash called “Unplanned” (an anti-abortion movie). I happily send it out when requested because I want Bethel Redding to be confronted with uncomfortable questions.

And it’s not like Bethel doesn’t know that this sort of thing (promoting a #oncegay hashtag and a group that does conversion therapy) isn’t problematic. They got criticized last year for their harshly anti-LGBTQ viewpoints. In fact they ended up having to delete one of their pastors’ sermons because it was just 90 minutes of criticism of #MeToo and gay bashing, which ended up with one person standing up and calling the pastor out. (I still have a copy of the sermon. The Internet is forever.)

What stuns me is this—these people can’t let those of us who aren’t heterosexual alone. It doesn’t matter if you’re gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, you’re a threat to Bethel Redding’s belief that heterosexuality is at the center of being a Christian. I’m asexual and I just don’t get how this is supposed to work, I just don’t. And I frankly resent their attitude. Jesus had nothing to say about sexuality and wasn’t all in on the fruits of heterosexuality (marriage, family) at all. Why have so many people hitched their religious belief system to militant heterosexuality?? (Don’t answer that.)

There’s about zero liberal in Sri Lanka’s government.

Sri Lanka is announcing a curfew now on its official radio, to take effect overnight.

The government has arrested one individual in connexion with one attack.

Defence units have been empowered with special powers to investigate and detain anyone suspected of a connexion with attacks on Catholic churches.

And now the cricket report …

Social media is aflame with Sri Lankans commenting on the ongoing issue, mostly condemning the government, police, and intelligence services for not thwarting or uncovering the plot for these attacks.

This is a problem in every country:

a) When the government successfully thwarts attacks and doesn’t report that, they are generally trying to protect sources and methods of intelligence-gathering.

b) When the government promotes the destruction of a potential terrorism attack, people bleat that the government is engaging in “security theatre” or tooting its own horn. (You see that here anytime a police organisation or intelligence service announces thwarting an attack.)

c) When the government fails to prevent an attack, citizens attack the government for failing to protect them.

A government can thwart a hundred attacks. All it takes for terrorism to succeed is one to get through.

I’m sorry to note that most Christian churches are antagonistic to the LGBT community.

Some of them are open about it, some use the line “love the sinner, hate the sin” (ignoring that LGBT is not a choice), &c.

The church which seems to be most open about it (the Metropolitan Community Church, the church in which my sister is a deaconess), is banned from the World Council of Churches, specifically for their open stance on the LBGT.

Sounds like what they played on the Armed Forces Network AM channel in Germany.

Same in Rota and on ship’s radio in the fleet. (Sadly, as a DJ on the USS JFK, I helped create such cringeworthy music mixes. My show was Country and Bluegrass, sandwiched between a heavy metal programme and a Top 40 programme.)

I had a running gag going with the DJ’s at AFN in Frankfurt; I would call in and request a 60/70’s hit, they would inform me that they only did 80/90’s music, so I would request the modern cover version of it…

Breaking again from SLBC:

Calls for calm.
The military will try anyone in civil courts connected with the attacks.
The police curfew is in immediate effect.
The state is meeting with officials of the Catholic Church.
False information is spreading on social media; as such, all social media sites have been blocked in Sri Lanka.
Several countries have condemned the attacks, including India and Pakistan. Both nations’ prime ministers state there is no place in civilised society for such attacks. The UK prime minister calls the attacks truly appalling and no one should have to practice their religious faith in fear.

Now back to “Love Me Tender.”

[Embedded content]

Isn’t Bethel the one where the chief witch-doctor claimed he made it rain gold dust in the sanctuary?

TBH it’s been all downhill since he actually had to start being President. Read a great quip from a Dem strategist this morning- Trump wins in reality TV, he loses in reality. Basically when Trump controls the game, he wins but when reality kicks in I.e. the Mueller Report and actual Presiding, he loses and it’s been mostly the latter since November 2016 for him. “Tensions within President Donald Trump’s white nationalist base continued as former Republican state Rep. David Duke demanded that Trump fire senior White House advisor Jared Kushner.

“Duke, a convicted felon, is a former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.

“Duke posted media on Twitter that depicted Kushner holding up a baby-sized Trump by his underwear, with the #FireKushner hashtag repeated three times.

Also in April, Duke has referred to Kushner as a “Jewish Zionist Supremacist” and called him the “Anti-Christ.”

rawstory.com

Gee, who’d’ve guessed an anti-Semite would go after a Jew.

Duke is dumber than I would have thought thinking Trump would kick out Kushner. Also, Duke may just learn Trump doesn’t care about him not when it comes to keeping his plastic daughter happy.

Our friend puts on a great Seder every year. 20 people for dinner last night and the food, again, was awesome. His matzo ball soup is to die for. Starts with a chicken stock, then adds duck confit and reduces the stock again and makes the matzo balls with the meat off the duck. Fucking heaven.

Additionally, last night, the first course was a meze of Palestinian dishes. A lamb kofta he cooked on the grill, a zhoug (cilantro sauce), a grilled eggplant dish, roasted beets and a ‘matzo brie hash’ (a vehicle for delivering schmalz to one’s belly).

Main was short rib, wok fried carrots, and was going to make a kugel, though as it was getting late he called an audible and had the Irishman, me, make latkes. I love making latkes.

JASPER, Texas (AP) — A technology company was almost ready to bring up to 300 new jobs to Jasper, Texas, but in the final stages of recent negotiations, a potential deal-breaker emerged: the community’s history as the place where three white men dragged a black man behind a pickup, killing him.

The 1998 death of James Byrd Jr. was one of the most gruesome hate crimes in U.S. history, and it gave the company president pause in the discussions about where to locate his firm’s newest facility. Local clergy and community leaders made their case that the town of 7,600 people is not defined by a murder that happened almost 21 years ago.

Joy Reid just had a brief segment with MSNBC journalist Mike Viqueira. He was staking out Bob Mueller and trying to get a comment from him as he left church through a side door. Maybe it’s just me — but it seems that on Easter morning, it is totally inappropriate to stalk someone who has not committed any crime, who is infamous for not commenting, and who is trying to observe the most important holiday of his religion. Can we just leave honest people alone occasionally?

Which reminds me — is Trump attending church today?

They produce uplifting, contemporary Christian music so I’m surprised that they’re so antagonistic towards the LGBT community. What a shame.

A lot of people are unhappy about Bethel Music because their songs are so prevalent even in churches that don’t share their anti-LBGTQ beliefs. There is the beginnings of a move to push churches to dump Bethel Music songs for precisely this reason—“do you want your royalties to continue to fund anti-LGBTQ churches?”

Well, at least Rep. Cummings is being realistic and facing the facts that it could cost in the elections.

It is realistic to think in this current climate and with the help of the media Trump could use this to get another win.

The Trumps already seem to be building toward making that happen. I think they will delay the actual impeachment as long as they can and Rudy laid out their game plan for how they will run on all of this.

They are going to say they never got a fair chance, Clinton and Obama worked to take them down from day one and now the Democrats are covering it up with Mueller’s help. Elect Trump to his second term so he can get something done those nasty Democrats messed up for the first one.

to be fair, I also see the converse effect as well…. Dems have been watching this shitshow unfold during the election process and post the election process and finally took back the House in 2018.

Not pushing for Impeachment hearings in light of all of the crimes and all of the political norms being ignored and quite possible treason among all of the other crimes (RICO, Voting rights violations, illegal finance, perjury) would be seen as abdicating their responsibilities and buying into the idea that there is only the Presidency and the other pieces of the Government only exist to exert his will.

Besides, Congressional Hearings will put this information out there, into the Congressional Record and will not likely only affect Trump, but each and every member of his Administration… Think Mnuchin from Treasury is getting away unscathed? Barr for his gross misrepresentation of what was in the Report?… I think these fuckers are lucky that the Dems are abiding by the rules and if the GOP believes that the rules won’t apply, well then I don’t expect that people are just going to allow that to pass.

Black Man Given Nation’s Worst Job

WASHINGTON—African-American man Barack Obama, 47, was given the least-desirable job in the entire country Tuesday when he was elected president of the United States of America. In his new high-stress, low-reward position, Obama will be charged with such tasks as completely overhauling the nation’s broken-down economy, repairing the crumbling infrastructure, and generally having to please more than 300 million Americans and cater to their every whim on a daily basis. As part of his duties, the black man will have to spend four to eight years cleaning up the messes other people left behind. The job comes with such intense scrutiny and so certain a guarantee of failure that only one other person even bothered applying for it. Said scholar and activist Mark L. Denton, “It just goes to show you that, in this country, a black man still can’t catch a break.”

I don’t disagree. I just worry that doing the right thing is going to cost us.

I think that way because if we were all doing the right thing, we wouldn’t even be in this mess.

All being the important word.

agreed, the GOP sure made the Dems pay the price for the implementation of the ACA by successfully characterizing it as some kind of massive healthcare boondoggle, even though it was debated for over a year and had input from multiple sources, physicians, nurses, insurance companies and even the GOP itself.

The thing is, after Trump, I actually believe people are starting to understand that this is NOT a “both sides” issue (despite the useful idiots in the Media STILL selling that narrative) and that the GOP’s veil of deceit is finally showing some rends in that fabric. I think the Tax Reform bill is bringing that home as people are actually seeing with their own eyes that the GOP gives a fuck-all about the middle class. Sure, people can be racist-lite in their personal lives but when you start fucking with their tax refunds and pissing away their summer vacation plans, people remember that kind of shit.

Does that mean I shouldn’t picket the church that believes the state should execute women who have abortions? I thought I’d go out with a sign that says, “Christ is risen! Hallelujah! Totally trends into tinfoil hat territory, but in my darker moments, I think: “Muller’s a Republican. Republicans always put power and party before law and the good of the country. He purposely left the report vague enough for Trump to potentially skate.”

Honestly, it’s probably just me, but I’ve fucking had it with hearing what an infallible bulwark of honesty and integrity Muller is. Regardless of my “theory” above, Muller probably knows that Trump should be out of office and his report is being grossly misinterpreted.

However, it feels like he’s going to pull the “Well, my job was just to investigate the claims, if the country slides into dictatorship, not my problem” horseshit.

So, if a reporter asks him an honest question as he’s leaving Mass, tough. There’s way more at stake right now than worrying about Muller being able to sing hymns.

Thing is, churches such as Catholics supported these laws as well, along with many non-fundamentalist Protestants.

If it was Catholics writing the laws, I imagine you’d see Charismatics discriminated against.

Most of them would discriminate against Mormons. All of them would discriminate against atheists (and have even before such laws were written).

OK, even leaving aside for a moment the fact that Dinesh D’Souza is a hack ideologue and a general blithering fool, there ARE a number of difference in how the media is/his covered the Sri Lanka bombings, vs. the New Zealand mosque shooting. And AFAICT, the biggest ones are:
1. The NZ shooter livestreamed his attack, and tried to maximize its exposure in the world media (mainly Internet)- and so far, that does NOT seem to be the case in Sri Lanka.
2. Brandon Tarrant didn’t bother top cover up his involvement: the Sri Lanka bombers (as of this afternoon) still haven’t been identified
3. The Sri Lankan government seems to have used the occasion of these attacks to clamp down on news media, shut off Internet access and try to keep a lid on the news. NOT what happened in NZ (which was basically the opposite).
4 . Have I mentioned that Dinesh D’Souza is a hack ideologue and general blithering fool? (and yes, as noted, this is frontpage news worldwide)

PS: As of 13:00 ET the death toll in Sri Lanka stands at 207, with 450 injured.

The original Starr report was totally unredacted so it could be turned into a paperback as is. And the current Mueller report is available to everyone on line. Certain issues were totally different — there was no allegation of foreign involvement for Clinton and so there would have been no need for redactions regarding sensitive intelligence operations. And there were no other ongoing investigations regarding other persons that would have required redactions. I have no objection to those redactions. However, Starr did release all the grand jury evidence and it seems that if Barr had any ethics (* hint — he doesn’t), he would have made efforts to secure authorization to release that material.

I am intending to write to my Congressman that Barr needs to be impeached immediately for his behavior.

Mueller did not want to challenge DOJ rules; if he had, it would have gone to the SC and the decision would probably have not been in his favor. He’s a “by the book” type of guy who is unlikely to object to longstanding DOJ policy. I honestly have more respect for those who don’t believe in discriminatory laws period than those who are okay with discriminatory laws that protect certain groups. That is to say if you accept that the law can protect one against discrimination on the basis of race, gender, disability, you should also be able to support protection against discrimination on the basis of religion and sexuality. All these laws that allow discrimination against people in the name of religion are done by majority groups that would never be persecuted. Really, if you were hypothetically to have an adoption agency and discriminate against Christians, you would be the subject of a Fox News outrage even though you would be doing the same thing that these agencies do against LGBT people and Atheists.

As far as I understand, they can discriminate all they want as long as they do not take any federal funding…that is the crux of the issue here, not Religious Freedom but violation of the terms and condition under which they accept financial assistance.

In the case of Miracle Hill in South Carolina, they do take federal funding.

The problem is said funding goes through the state government, then is distributed to them.

Trump recently signed an order giving an exemption to South Carolina over anti-discrimination provisions in federal law.

Americans United for Separation of Church and State are pressing a lawsuit against Miracle Hill and South Carolina on behalf of a Catholic and two Jewish families.

Religión attacking religion. Killing for the deity/philosophy of your choice. I suspect it won’t be a bunch of atheists blowing up churches. Unless the religion merges with the state in a fascist partnership aimed at eliminating rights. Hence the quote about people not being free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest.

The Tamil Tigers aren’t religiously motivated at all, it’s pure nationalism. They’re who invented the suicide vest.

Of course. I just don’t see why they would attack a specific faith as opposed to the government or general population

No one is sure about anything, yet.

But here’s a bit of background via The Guardian.

Shorter: it could be anyone, but harassment of minority religions (in Sri Lanka, both Christians and Muslims) isn’t new there: and in the writer’s opinion, the government should have been more on-the-ball regarding security.

Picketing with a sign is not inappropriate — but using a bullhorn on this day may be. I am not a Christian so am unsure about all that is considered appropriate in these circumstances. I just thought that stalking Mueller in particular on this day was wrong.

I wouldn’t go out with a bullhorn. But these guys, they have absolutely NO PROBLEM going out to the Planned Parenthood in Tempe with a bullhorn.

re: #414 Mattand

Honestly, I don’t. We’re at Defcon 1 with regard to the government going full Banana Republic. The investigation of Clinton was turned into an unredacted fucking paperback book within days of it’s release. Muller’s report is being redacted to protect a corrupt President.

Muller has to know this. Yet, if push comes to shove, he’ll probably just hang back and go “Hey, whaddya gonna do?” when our country goes full dictatorship.

Admittedly, a lot of this predicated on Muller wanting to go full whistle blower. Which probably will never happen.

Mueller, as someone descried, is in the camp that thinks that the president must first be removed from office in order to be charged with crimes. And he can’t remove someone from office. He left it up to Congress.

At the same time, when the Senate confirmed Barr, Mueller knew his time was up. Barr was explicitly chosen to shut the investigation down. All Mueller could do was present what he had, or Barr would have removed more from the report.

And there is much more. SDNY and NYAG. Few understand emoluments and obstruction but most understand money laundering and tax evasion. Not to mention Russian loans and IC findings. Before we strike a match get all the wood in place.

They rent the church space (as in, the conservative Presbyterian church they’re in is renting the space to them). And the church is surrounded by houses. I live nearby. I don’t want to disturb the neighbors, because when they leave after finishing with their rented church space, I stay here. I have to be cognizant of that.

The fact is, they’re pretty gobsmacked that someone (me) would actually show up and protest them. I am not the greatest protester there ever is. I’m not very good at it at all. But they’re startled…I had the entire church body out on the lawn last Sunday.
