A Powerful Live Performance by Scottish Songwriter Karine Polwart: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

April 10, 2019 | Suraya Mohamed — Scottish singer, songwriter and essayist Karine Polwart seldom comes stateside. She prefers to limit air travel in order to minimize her carbon footprint. She took exception, however, to fly from Edinburgh to New York City to participate in the Carnegie Hall Migrations festival, a celebration of the history of the movement of people all around the world. Polwart and her brother, guitarist Steven Polwart and multi-instrumentalist, Inge Thomson, then escaped New York for a day to play the Tiny Desk here in Washington, D.C.

Polwart writes songs about hope, music that harnesses spiritual power and lyrics that address important social justice themes. Stories of human emotion and the human experience are also commonplace as in the first tune, “Ophelia.”

“There’s a wind in from the desert
Red dust blows across the sun
It bleeds into the evening
We watch it from the garden
Your hair glints in the strange yellow light
We let go of all our fighting
Ophelia”

Her second song at the desk, “I Burn But I Am Not Consumed,” includes a mesmerizing spoken word denunciation of President Donald Trump, while the closing tune, “King of Birds,” praises the power of small things. In it Polwart recounts the legend of a wren who piggybacks a lift on an eagle’s wing. Just as the large bird is unable to fly any higher in the sky, the tiny wren catches a breath of air, soars higher than the eagle and is crowned the king of all birds.

“At Ludgate Hill
where the towers of smoke and mirrors bruise the sky
the pilgrims huddle in
as the tiny King of Birds begins to cry
the people start to sing
to light glory in the dark
to ring the bell
and to breathe hope in every heart”

Lyricism and messages of hope and beauty heard throughout punctuate a stunning accompaniment of inventive instrumentation. The steady, resonant guitar riffs played by Steven Polwart ground the delicate vocal harmonies. Inge Thomson’s accordion lines, combined with an array of percussion instruments and synth-generated effects, add a complimentary layer of sound without overpowering the music. Karine Polwart’s bellowing and drone-like Shruti box provides a sweet serenity.

This performance will quite likely inspire you to learn more about Polwart. The NPR program, The Thistle and Shamrock often features her music. This recent episode features cuts from Polwart’s latest album, plus her ideas on movement and migration.

New music from Karine Polwart, way cool! I first found her music in the band Malinky. At the time I had to order from a merchant in Scotland as i could not find their music in the States. And now its on Youtube.

Here’s a couple of different takes on relationships:

And, she is unimpressed with Trump, whose mother came from Tong on The Isle of Lewis, Scotland:

(From the second song of the NPR Tiny Desk set “I Burn But I Am Not Consumed”)

“Your mother was a wee girl once,
who played upon my rocky shore.
And you, you are broken boy,
and you want more and more and more.
You build a tower. You build a wall,
You live in fear that they might fall.
You who see nothing but your face
in the sheen of The Hudson River.”

It infuriates me so much how these Republicans who love to fucking crow how patriotic thy are saying it was okay and acceptable to accept help from a hostile foreign government and then to lie about ti and cover it up. Rudy can go to hell. He was never my mayor anyhow. Maybe you should rename yourself Russia’s mayor, Rudy because you as shit aren’t America’s the way you bent backwards for Moscow Donnie.

I consider shows having he and his ilk to be a complete waste of my time. Shows that do this nonsense too often, including Meet the Chuck, end up on my don’t watch list.

Yeah, so I went out and protested with my signs. It was nearly as frustrating as last week, but the worst I got languagewise was telling some guy he was a “butthead” for saying I was going to hell.

They had kids out there today, trying to “educate” me. I was horrified, these kids are being taught lies. They’re being told the earth is between six thousand and ten thousand years old and that evolution is a lie. (For the record, those are two different things.) Years ago I might have been willing to blow that off, but today I was all, “kids, these people are lying to you.” I was not having any of it.

They had a video of me posted to their church web page and of course I got called all sorts of names, baby killer, got blood on my hands, told I worshiped the wrong Jesus, told I was going to hell, more than once. And they think they know more about denominations and beliefs than I do. I have spent most of my adult life trying to figure this out before giving up and saying “It’s only about Jesus.” (And that’s only for me. I don’t know about other people because, guess what, I’m not living their lives!)

Oh, and the reason they condemn me and tell me I’m going to hell? Because I don’t demonstrate the right fruit, according to them. In their minds, I’m supposed to be meek, mild and agree with them. *rolls eyes* Funny how that works, eh?

This is a fascinating thread.

It argues that the data hacks from FaceBook, Google, Equifax and others were a deliberate, systematic data collection and microtargeting effort by the Trump Campaign and their allies. In terms of how such collected might have been used, I just cannot think that way, so cannot judge it.

I’m seeing Mayor Pete poked the hornets nest with some comments he made about Bernie’s supporters being like Trunp’s. Didn’t Bernie himself say it was unfair to characterize Trump supporters as bigots? The Sanders campaign can dish out a lot but can’t take it. 18
ckkatz  Apr 21, 2019 • 9:12:20pm

I agree that there is anecdotal data on strong Bernie supporters. And I agree that I have many limitations in my understanding of Bernie and his movement.

But I guess that I still have some doubts about how much of his support is true grassroots and how much is ginned either internally within his movement, or externally by allies and fellow travelers. Certainly, on the surface, it seems to me that something has, as they say in programming, a “bad smell”.

In the end, though, I suspect that you have a much better feel for what is going on in the Bernie movement than I do.

If Bernie got robbed by the DNC in 2016 then HRC did by Obama in 2008. Their obsession with the idea he’s the only true progressive is dangerous and he does nothing to change that lie.

I kind of understand the far left a little since I was a teenage Kucinich fan. I get that the left is glad to have an unapologetic Democratic socialist but there are a lot of red flags with Sanders. TBH I think he would be a bad president. His basic political instincts are terrible. His agenda would have a hard time passing Congress or it would get overturned. They see him as a second FDR but FDR had the depression as a backdrop and actual political savvy.

Well, I guess that this is another task that the DNC is going to have to thread the needle on. It is going to have to convince the hard left wing, the Bernie or Bust wing, and the Jill Shills to stay within the party. All while fighting the trolls and bots and professional outside agitators.

And that is only addressing the internal Democratic Party side.

Any thoughts as to how many there are of these in terms of numbers?

And yes, even though I am a geezerly boomer, I agree with you. Although I am not very astute at forecasting politics, I also think that Bernie’s time is long past… If it ever was at all.

Folks in the last thread were going on about elderly people they knew or are related to who’d lived through vast changes.

I guess for me, the person I know best was my great-grandmother Mayo (my mother’s mother’s mother).

She was born at home on a farm in central Michigan in 1896, and lived there her whole life until near the end. Her first husband passed away in 1955 so I never met him. She lived through all the technological advancements, wars, and other historical markers others have already noted.

Starting in the Sixties or so she traveled to Florida for winter. There she met and married her second husband in the Seventies (he died in the Nineties).

She sold her farm in the Eighties and moved to a lakehouse in central Michigan. In the late Eighties she moved in with her daughter, and stayed with her until she died in 1993.

In the Eighties the State of Michigan tried to revoke her lifetime-issue driver’s license from when the state first started issuing them. She was part of a class-action suit of the dozen or so people who had them which argued “lifetime is lifetime.” They won that suit, mostly because Michigan decided it wasn’t worth the expense to revoke about twelve licenses.

At the time I was in Germany and my then-toddler son was there on a Medivac for an emergency surgery. A Red Cross message came in requesting my presence to help prepare for her funeral, relayed by telephone from my division officer in Spain, telling me emergency leave was approved and just fly to Michigan from Germany.

I possess a five-generation photograph which includes me as a toddler and my Great-Grandmother Mayo’s mother, with all the women on my mother’s side, made in 1962. (I recreated the same photograph with all the women from that who were still alive when my son was an infant, creating another five-generation photograph.)

You have me thinking about my mother’s father. He was born in 1895 and passed away in 1986. He was born on a farm in rural Missouri in Jesse James territory.

He grew up knowing a lot of Civil War veterans. And once remarked upon seeing a National Cemetery section with their graves that it was probably the first time they ever were in a straight line.

He was the one who told the story about how one day a gang of unknown men rode through the area and stole all his family’s chickens. The family was relieved that only the chickens were taken as there were no telephones to call the police. And no police to call.

During World War 1 he served with a machine gun company in the 32nd Division. He noted that by November 1918 he was awfully tired of the war. On Armistice Day, his regiment got word of the Armistice, but the Germans across from him didn’t. When men from his regiment went to celebrate the end of the war, they got shot up by the Germans.

On my father’s side, his parents immigrated from Eastern Europe. Which probably cost them 20 years of life span. So I did not meet many of them.

But since all of the close relatives who didn’t immigrate were murdered in the Holocaust, I guess that immigration was the correct choice.

edit fixed a couple of typos

For perspective. I don’t even know who one of my second great grandparents was. And with the ones on my mom’s side, no death dates except for one and another I have a general idea since my grandmother’s oldest sister met him.

You might be able to check the local census documents for they and their families. I know that back in the 1970’s I worked part time in the University of Pittsburgh Library and they had a lot of the Pittsburgh area handwritten census documents from the 19th Century. Those were arranged by address and who was living in the household at the time of the census. (Strange the random dribbles of information that we encounter and remember across our lifetime.)

Ah! Well I should clarify here. The second great grandparents I don’t have the info on died in Europe. Those are my maternal grandparents’ grandparents. I have the info on my paternal grandparents’ grandparents since they all lived in the US. All are buried in Pittsburgh and all but two still have headstones despite dying over 100 years ago.

He gave Democrats the lead spot, grilled Mike Lee pretty hard on the GOP side, and then devoted a good chunk of the show to literary discussion, including a nice interview with Robert Caro (WHO NEEDS TO STOP GIVING INTERVIEWS AND GET BACK TO FINISHING HIS LBJ BIOGRAPHY BUT THAT’S ANOTHER STORY)

True, with all the changes, turbulence, and war of the past two centuries a lot was lost.

Additionally, many local communities were responsible for internal governance of their ethnic group. Which meant that if records were kept at all, it was done by the local church as there was often no other community organization.

This was particularly the case for communities and ethnic groups outside the locus of power in the various empires.

Yeah and with the exception of the Germans, they were ethnic group members not in the empire’s power structure. Irish in the British and Rusyn and Slovene in the Austrian Hungarian. I did see where my family in Slovakia lived last summer though. What a journey. I hope I eventually can do that in other places.

My mom’s dad was born in 1898 on the Lower East Side, mom’s mom said her birth year was classified but I think it was the mid-aughts. They had STORIES!!

Grandpa’s first job, as a young boy, was working for the store on the corner that had the only telephone on the block… he’d have to run and get whoever the call was for. He also worked a couple of summers for the iceman, hauling blocks of ice up four flights of stairs. He told me about the first time he ever saw a car — the first time anybody on his block had ever seen a car. One of his friends was a radio hobbyist, they stayed up all night listening to the ships rescuing Titanic survivors. His older brothers were boxers (famous in their day), he was their corner boy. Later, he worked as a bouncer in uptown speakeasies (his icepick skills came in handy), and handled the payoffs to both bootleggers and cops.

Grandma as a teenager hitch-hiked with her sister up to Canada and then all the way across to Vancouver and back. She dated a barnstormer, he taught her to pilot a bi-plane. She broke up with him when he wanted her to be his wing-walker for airshows. She went to secretarial school, and worked from the mid-1920’s to the mid-1940’s as office manager for a white shoe law firm. She was the only woman at the firm; it broke her heart that she couldn’t be a lawyer, but she was the inspiration for my mom entering law school in 1952.

They met at the courthouse; he had just been acquitted of something or other, she was filing papers of some kind. She denied vehemently that she ever had any insider information from her girlfriends who were either typewriters at Wall Street firms or whores for the brokers; it was “just a feeling” that made her insist grandpa cash out all his stocks in early October 1929.

The only time I ever saw grandpa cry was when RFK was shot. The only time I ever saw grandma cry was when MLK was shot. They both lived long enough to be angry at Reagan for cancelling the space program after Challenger. He died in early 1989, she watched on TV when the Berlin Wall came down and voted for Clinton.

On Downton Abbey, when Mrs Patmore’s nephew got his memorial plaque after having been executed for desertion in WWI… he was born the same year as my grandpa.

Moldy oldie (very funny though)

David received a parrot for his birthday. This parrot was fully grown with a bad attitude and worse vocabulary. Every other word was an expletive. Those that weren’t expletives were, to say the least, rude.

David tried hard to change the bird’s attitude and was constantly saying polite words, playing soft music, and anything else that came to mind. Nothing worked. He yelled at the bird and the bird got worse. He shook the bird and the bird got madder and ruder.

Finally, in a moment of desperation, David put the parrot in the freezer. For a few moments he heard the bird squawking, kicking and screaming and then, suddenly, all was quiet.

David, frightened that he might have actually hurt the bird, quickly opened the freezer door. The parrot calmly stepped out onto David’s extended arm and said, “I’m sorry that I offended you with my language and actions. I ask for your forgiveness.”

David was astounded at the bird’s change in attitude and was about to ask what changed him when the parrot continued, “May I ask what the chicken did?”

20-year-old college student says Uber driver left her on side of the road when he found out she was getting an abortion

A 20-year-old college student’s Reddit post about “the worst, most backwards day” of her life is gaining traction online after she recounted how she was dropped on the side of the road by an Uber driver who disagreed with her decision to get an abortion.

Claire Montgomery, a pseudonym, was faced with a difficult decision after finding out that she was pregnant in March. The college sophomore at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, tells Yahoo Lifestyle that she was talking to her boyfriend, who attends school in North Carolina, about how her period had been about a week late. And although she had put aside the anxiety of possibly being pregnant because she had previously taken Plan B, an emergency contraception pill, she took a pregnancy test and realized that what she feared had come true.

We need to go after the largest contingent of voters from the last election, the folks who didn’t vote at all.

We have mail-in voting in Nebraska in all rural areas, (both mail-in and in-person exist in cities). “Did not vote” would have won the election in this state.

That’s despite the fact you can fill in a ballot in your own house and drop it in the mail postage-free here.

My township was an anomaly in the state (voter turnout was higher than 80%). The overwhelming majority of precincts were under 50%.

Yes. My (ex-)wife stayed in Germany with our son and flew back to Spain when he was released from the hospital in Weisbaden.

I returned to Spain via Gibraltar. My then-wife couldn’t be there the day I arrived, so a couple days before she drove my Citroën to La Linea de la Concepcion (on the other side of the border) and parked it there and got a ride home to Rota. She left my car keys with the Guardia Civil at Spanish customs for me to pick up.

That being said, it’s actually a hell of a good vehicle, and it handles really well. A student of mine has one, and she absolutely loves it. She let me drive it around town one day, and I have to say, it’s a good car (or whatever it’s supposed to be) and if I had the money to blow, I’d be tempted to buy one if I could one in really good shape.

Wow.

My mother’s mother, when she moved away from her mother’s farm to Detroit, got married, then moved back to what is my tiny hometown, opened a drugs and sundry store which operated there for many years. (It’s an abandoned building now, with my grandparent’s name still painted on the side.)

My mother tells a story of how my grandparents tried to teach my mother and uncle the value of money when they were children (since my grandparents lived through the Great Depression).

Each week they would allocate food money to one of them to purchase food for meals for the week. (They could spend it in the store only at the same price anyone else paid, or they could spend it at the general store.) The objective was to plan out the money so it would last all week.

My mother says my uncle was very frugal with money when he purchased the food, so meals were pretty much the same (in the sense of nutritious and filling) every day.

She was lousy with the allotment; she would go in for steaks and specialty foods, and by the end of the week the family was eating beans and rice. (She hasn’t improved much in the intervening years.)

They didn’t have the only phone, but there were very few phones (our telephone number was 1-2 until 1978, when we got semi-direct dial service). In the horrendous ice storm which when I was a teenager, our house had the only functioning telephone in town for weeks.

My mom’s dad was born in 1898 on the Lower East Side, mom’s mom said her birth year was classified but I think it was the mid-aughts. They had STORIES!!

My mom was old enough to remember going to see silent films. she related how when the captions appeared, the audience read them out loud for the benefit of the illiterate; “OH MARTHA, I LOVE YOU!!!” followed by a ripple of whispers as it was then translated into a half-dozen languages for the ears of those who could not speak English.

Jesse James territory.

I visited the James farm in Kearney when I was living in Liberty.

My wife is a member of the Younger clan (her so-called maiden name is Younger), related to John Younger (he was about eight years old at the time of the James-Younger gang).

Interestingly I lived right next door to the bank they robbed in Liberty.

My wife’s youngest brother was in Northfield, Mn. last year, and after a discussion with the historical librarian for the town, gave a speech apologising for the family’s transgressions in the town.

A jeweler there sent along with him pieces for my wife. They have been invited this year to the Northfield annual celebration of defeating the James-Younger gang as parade marshals.

DNC Loyalty Oath Imposition on Cthulhu Ends in Massacre (Goes to Cthulu for America, Cthulu’s 2020 campaign site)

KINGSPORT STAR HERALD - April 2, 2019

By Beretta Nova

Cthulhu’s brief entry into Democratic Party politics ended early this morning with the deaths of thirty-four DNC staffers at the party’s office in Boston.

Sources familiar with the process revealed that Cthulhu was due to arrive at 8 A.M. to participate in a small ceremony welcoming the Dread Lord to the Democratic Party and to pledge loyalty to its leaders.

All candidates who participate in the Democratic primary are required to sign and notarize the oath which declares that the candidate will serve as a Democrat if elected president and the DNC can determine who is “a bonafide Democrat.”

Cthulhu, a political independent whose platform includes the eradication of all human life on earth, has long eluded calls to formally join the Republican and Democratic Parties.

His puzzling move to join the Democrats at the behest of congressional leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer instead ended with several people dead and a Boston neighborhood devastated by what can only be described as a wave of mass hysteria. Pelosi and Schumer were not in attendance.

Hospitals near the area are inundated with residents complaining of nausea, headaches, and nosebleeds. Boston P.D. has been swamped with reports of suicides and murder throughout the morning.

The Cthulhu campaign has only issued one terse statement: “Cthulhu submits to no one.”

Schoenberg: Gurrelieder

Gurrelieder is a gigantic, post-Wagnerian cantata that, in retrospect, seems like the terminus ante quem for Romanticism in music, beyond which further elaboration or intensity was surely impossible, and led surely if not inevitably to the Expressionism which the prodigious Schoenberg felt compelled to explore in works such as Erwartung, and thence, infamously, to the 12-tone system of musical composition from which, at least superficially, the work appears so distant in form and idiom.

nytimes.com
Protests are mounting across the country against school boards which use Summit, a so-called programmed education system promoted by Facebook.

Programmed education uses computers and set students as individual learners, only assisted by a teacher if they have problems. Computers direct learning and sets expectations on how fast each individual student learns.

The Navy attempted programmed learning when I was in AV(A) (Aviation Electronics Technician school) back in 1978. While I beat the time set by the computer systems of the day and rarely needed instructional help, overall the programme was an absolute disaster for teaching avionics technicians. It was promoted by corporations then to prove programmed learning should be the norm instead of public education.

(Any conservative who tells you the military is not a place for social experiments can be pointed to the Navy’s aborted programmed learning system.)

By the time I reached AFTA in 1979 (Advanced First-Term Avionics), the programme was in the bin and we had regular instructors and regular classes.

The article above details the typical conservative attempt to privatise things, this in Kansas. Underfund it (education in this case, driving teachers out and raising class sizes), declare a problem, bring in a corporation to prove corporations do things better than the government. Now it’s reached public backlash.

Facebook is not just doing this in Kansas though, they have over two hundred schools across the nation - students are staging walkouts and parents are demanding school boards reject the Summit programme. GOP school board members typically tell them that all the metrics say the programme works, students love the system (despite repeated polling of students in schools approaching 90% saying they despise it, in other words conservatives lying to voters again).

The solution of course is to vote out GOP school board members. That’s the tough part because the GOP is so good at raising outrage over anything from a bathroom to abortion to make sure their voters stay in the fold, even if it means sacrificing their children’s educations on the altar of capitalism.

First was a Kitchen Aid we put in after remodeling the kitchen. It lasted 5 yrs and took a crap. The Bosch is about 8 years old now and works like a charm. No rinsing needed either. We did have a problem with the control panel, but the company replaced it for free. Fortunately The Husband is well versed in fixing things so he had no trouble switching out the panels. Dishwasher is my favorite kitchen “luxury”.

One of the over one thousand comments in the New York Times article I linked above on programmed learning contains this gem, posted a few hours ago (comments are now closed so I can’t respond):

If using a computer causes more epileptic seizures and eyestrain in children than adults, can you please explain to us exactly how. It isn’t explained in here anywhere and I’m not convinced.

And, this is the problem we epileptics have: People simply do not believe us. (Hulu and The North Face have still not responded to my complaints about The North Face’s advert which triggered a seizure in me. Hulu promised a response, which means I can only assume they lied.)

I presume the Austin woman who wrote this never heard of the infamous Pokémon episode.

Same here. What will get me to my decision on Primary Day though is how the candidates present themselves and their ideas before that day.

None of them are going to come anywhere near here, so going out and seeing a candidate is impossible. (I still think the Democratic Party ought to hold its convention in Omaha, but they aren’t going to listen to me.)

Elizabeth Warren was in Denver the same day my wife and I were there for the Shelley Segal concert, but there was no promotion of her appearance in Denver round these parts two hundred miles away.

Currently, 270toWin shows Nebraska with one House district in the toss-up column based on polling (NE-2, the same district which went for President Obama in 2008 and elected a Democratic representative).

I imagine the DNC isn’t going to base its decision on where to hold a convention on whether it can win one electoral vote (though if they could swing NE-1, that would give the Dems four of our five electoral votes).

Omaha abuts Steve King’s district. The city borders it, and Carter Lake, Iowa (on the west side of the Missouri River and cut off from the rest of the state but part of Steve King’s district) is surrounded by Omaha on three sides.

It would certainly be a boost to the Democratic candidate right across the river challenging Mr. Cantaloupe Calves.

In no way are other schools not “for profit”. Have you seen what the administrators get paid at universities? Not to mention the sporting senior employees (such as coaches.)

The entire higher education scheme is “for profit”. Almost no school uses volunteer help.

The reason high education costs so much is because we create a demand for it, by insisting everyone must have a college degree.

Our main complaint is that the vintage section is now pretty much non-existent any more (only had 4 or 5 cars last year), and the street section where shops bring in their builds has been eliminated altogether. That’s where all the real innovation was taking place.

” … college is a basic need that should be available for free…”

This is where I think Warren or whoever goes wrong.

Deeply wrong.

It’s a appeal to fairness, to equality, etc.

But I propose that doing so misses more fundamental issues.

Issues about humans, about why we do what we do, and don’t do what we don’t want to do.

It’s been a while since you and I were in secondary school, but think back… do you remember fellow students who didn’t want to be in class? Maybe they skipped class? Maybe they just didn’t like it.

There is something very important in there about human nature.

Trying to sell “free college” to the electorate is an elaborate attempt to get the 18-30y.o. vote.

But it misses important questions such as:
1) what is “work” in the 21st century America?
2) what to do with people who don’t have the interest or ability to be cogs in the information-society?
3) do you really think a college education is necessary to say lay asphalt?
3b) And if not, do think the asphalt layer should get the same income of, say, someone who goes to their now “free” university and gets a B.A. in business?

These are the kind of questions that Warren and all those who are using “free” education don’t really want to answer, because the answers may be uncomfortably disquieting.

The reason high education costs so much is because we create a demand for it, by insisting everyone must have a college degree.

The single biggest reason higher education is so expensive is extreme budget cutting to state university systems to lower taxes on the wealthy and corporations.

Private corporate colleges do not need federal tax money. They have rich people to support them.

I’m not sure they’re uncomfortable so much as another layer of policy details. We do have to break this idea that a four year college is required for everything. Trade schools would be a useful addition. But I will say this: The way our society is now, the core classes they require to get a college degree still need to be taught, no matter the school type. Most people do not get enough history or literature in high school.

But even that I needed to get my paralegal certificate. And honestly, I think more attention needs to be focused on community colleges too. Biden’s wife actually taught at the same community college system I attended before I transferred to GMU. I never met Jill Biden Jacobs fwiw as she taught at another campus but I can tell you that Northern Virginia Community College served me well as both a 18-20 year old trying to discover what I should do with my life and improve as a student before I got my BA and later as a 29 year old going back to take a creative writing class just for kicks.

Hey, i need the gub’mnt to pay for me to finally get my BA with a Philosophy/English Literature double major so I can continue to not make enough to survive on ;)

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

Trump’s facing more subpoenas and his org too. They’re going to fight them, and they should lose. Oversight is a hell of a thing, and Trump hates it. He hates it so much because Mueller found sufficient reason for Congress to do its constitutional obligation to oversee the end of this administration. That’s right, because the GOP made it clear that obstruction of justice is a high crime worthy of impeachment, Mueller found at least 10 instances that rise to the level of obstruction of justice suitable for impeachment and removal from office.

But for the craven and complicit GOP, this would be the next step. The GOP continues defending this slag heap of a WH, and they continue to lie and claim all sorts of bad acts by the Democrats should be investigated, when Trumpworld was actually caught doing them. The GOP/Trumpworld message now is that you can get away with conspiring with foreign powers to throw the election so long as you win. Rudy’s messages over the weekend coupled with Trump tweets show that they know they were caught, and now they’re left with deflecting, dodging, and obfuscating while Democrats can’t get out of their own way to deliberate on the next step of beginning impeachment - whether it means continued investigations, new official impeachment investigations via articles of impeachment, or doing whatever the hell this is right now.

Did the Mueller report move the needle any on Trump approval or that people know he lied?

Possibly. But does that even matter? Trump’s actions are impeachable offenses, and everyone in Congress knows it. Everyone’s too busy triangulating to remember that there’s an oath to the office of the President, and Trump repeatedly violated it.

That’s the job description. That’s what Trump failed to do. And now the GOP are busy covering for him and Democrats are too … whatever this is right now … to grow a spine and show the nation exactly what the GOP and Trump are facing now and for all time.

Impeachment will be bad. It’s supposed to be bad. You get impeached for bad things. Trump did plenty to get removed from office, but the GOP will excuse it by claiming what exactly? That he was too incompetent to do it. That his underlings were just competent enough to ignore the words of the Commander in Chief and Chief Executive of the United States. They ignored the President of the USA so as to avoid engaging in crimes that Trump was demanding that they do?

I would welcome this impeachment wholeheartedly. Why? Because at the end, the GOP gets smeared with Trump bulkshit, the GOP base wont change one iota, but the middle who thought Trump would help them but hasn’t, will realize they’ve been duped and fucked by this criminal, and choose a better path.

All the while, we still have to fight against Russian interference as Trumpworld continues to ignore the ongoing threat, which Mueller spelled out. That too is an impeachable offense. Trumpworld knows Russia continues interfering, and they ignore the threat.

That will happen if we do something about the corporate tax rate being as low as it is, forcing companies to invest in their employees.

That’s a problem too. Unpaid and low paid internships. AOC has actually brought up something great about federal internships. They pay little if anything so the people who get these positions are already well off because they can afford to get a job like that.

Can’t have fairness and equality, that’s for sure.

Trying to sell “free college” to the electorate is an elaborate attempt to get the 18-30y.o. vote.

It sure would have gotten mine. Instead society left me with nothing because I was a war orphan with no money.

But it misses important questions such as:

3b) And if not, do think the asphalt layer should get the same income of, say, someone who goes to their now “free” university and gets a B.A. in business?

All red herrings. Asphalt layers didn’t need college educations before conservatives gutted the education system. Should they get the same income as an engineer or chemist? No. They didn’t then and they don’t now. As for the BA in business, that is not inherently bad. Not all people want to work in the information society? So what? For those who want to work in fields which do not require a college degree, there will always be a need for plumbers, carpenters, and asphalt layers. Slagging all people with business majors is no different than slagging people with fine arts majors, or sociology majors, &c.

These are the kind of questions that Warren and all those who are using “free” education don’t really want to answer, because the answers may be uncomfortably disquieting.

Warren’s plans involve putting the government back into directly financing public education which the GOP destroyed on purpose.

When I was in high school, I took a stand against compulsory education for anyone, and for easy availability of educational opportunities for all. I was called an elitist. I was told that poor kids would suffer the most. I already knew a kid who committed suicide because he couldn’t take what he had to face in school (bigotry, among other things) nor what he faced at home (poverty and the inability to escape).

The possibility of universal basic income could change all of this. Let people from the bottom to the top pursue the education and work they have interest in.

Is something being done to restore voting rights to all those in Wisconsin that Scott Walker purged from voting lists? It appears that 100,000’s might have lost their rights in 2016 — certainly sufficient to have changed the results in Wisconsin.

re: #123 wrenchwench

I’m thinking about men and women like my mom’s father. From what my mom has told me, he dropped out at some point. It wasn’t because of finances. He had some older brothers and sisters who graduated high school and others who didn’t. One thing Obama talked about and Rick Santorum called him a snob for it was suggesting that every child get some form of post-secondary education whether that’s the traditional four year route, community college, or vocational/trade school like what Grandpa got. That benefited him. He needed the GI Bill to do it though. As I said, I think we really need to be looking at ways to make diplomas worth it so these kids can do something once they graduate. I like the idea of universal college. I don’t like the idea of college just becoming what K-12 is and the degree losing some of its utility. I also think the first goal should be to work on making post secondary education more affordable. Going from record high tuition to free is a big jump. I know people hate to hear about incrementalism but incrementalism is how we’re going to make post secondary education more affordable and also worthwhile for American students.

The wife and I are going to the NY Auto Show at the Javitz after work. It hasn’t been very good the last couple of years, but we always end up going, hoping that it’ll improve again.

Our main complaint is that the vintage section is now pretty much non-existent any more (only had 4 or 5 cars last year), and the street section where shops bring in their builds has been eliminated altogether. That’s where all the real innovation was taking place.

So the trip isn’t a complete waste of time… Hudson Yards has some exciting sculptures and bits of architecture now open to the public. Easy walking distance from the Javitz.

We still have a Republican legislature in Wisconsin due to gerrymandering. That’s why the case at the Supreme Court on the subject is so critical. Fair enough.

I don’t hold FDR on a pedestal. What he did do was far-and-away better than what the Republicans under Hoover were doing (and Hoover tried to undermine when FDR was elected): Let ‘em eat Dust Bowl.

Hoover pretty much set the Republican Party’s “profits over people” positions they still have today. Utterly opposed to anything resembling “bank bailouts,” anything resembling social services or welfare for the masses, &c.

Truman did more to advance equal rights for sure, with such things as integration of the military.

It was a long haul and the work will probably never be done. As the Constitution states, “to create a more perfect Union.” The implication is the work will never be done.

DONALD TRUMP TO SUE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES FOR DOING THEIR FUCKING JOB

President Donald Trump and his business filed suit against Democratic House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings on Monday to block a subpoena sent last week seeking information about the president’s finances.

In the complaint filed in Washington, D.C., federal court Monday morning, Trump’s lawyers said that Democrats have “declared all-out political war” against him.

“Subpoenas are their weapon of choice,” the filing states.

Last week, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee subpoenaed Mazars, an accounting firm that Trump had used to prepare several years of financial statements, according to the lawmakers’ document.

The subpoena requested a slew of financial documents and related materials from Trump, his trust, the Trump Organization, the Trump Corporation, Trump’s holdings company, the Trump Foundation and the Trump International Hotel in Washington. Mazars told the committee that it would not be able to comply with demands for those documents without a subpoena, according to Cummings.

Trump’s lawyer in the lawsuit, William Consovoy, said in a statement that the attempt by Cummings’ committee to “obtain years’ worth of confidential information from their accountants lacks any legitimate legislative purpose, is an abuse of power, and is just another example of overreach by the president’s political opponents.”

The president’s counsel, Jay Sekulow, told NBC News: “We will not allow Congressional Presidential harassment to go unanswered.”

They are turning Trumps insane rants and talking points into ACTUAL LEGAL ARGUMENTS.

I hope a Judge takes them to the woodshed for this.

I see there has been discussion about college tuition paid for, etc.

Has anyone ever done any kind of economic impact study of what that will do for the piggy banks of the middle class and also what it would do for the overall economy of America?

Freeing up that kind of loan debt burden will surely have a decent impact on the economy.

I don’t think you’re following my point. FDR was willing to ignore African Americans to get Social Security. I’m glad we have Social Security FWIW and I understand fully the importance of pragmatism but holding up FDR as a political deity and deeming modern Democrats sell-outs because they’re not for universal and single payer is the problem. Jim Crow was also on a state level. Discrimination existed in the North but it was more informal. Not saying it was right of course but that’s not why FDR did it. FDR did it because he needed the Southerners. A pure political move.

I don’t think he’s actually disagreeing with so you so much as looking at it from a different angle. Would Social Security have passed had he included trades that favored blacks and women?

Right I do see. I think my point was that the people who want rapid change ignore that things like SS were passed by excluding certain groups. In that every American was intended to benefit from ACA, I think ACA was more closer to the intended goal. Social Security in 1935 was not the start.

Mazar ain’t going to take a fall for Agolf Twittler.

Trump’s attorney’s sent them a letter asserting subpoenas from Congress are not “legislative business” and therefore unenforceable.

I imagine the legal folks at Mazar and their corporation’s leaders have zero desire to risk fines or jail for Trump. They’ve already said they will comply with Congress as far as the law says they’re supposed to.

There was a great line I saw yesterday morning from one of the strategists. Trump wins on reality TV but not in reality. I guess the point is when Trump controls the narrative of reality like a reality show, he wins but when reality actually sets in, he can’t. And I guess that’s where finding the right candidate is vitally important.

Agree 100%, but a lot of this, I think, is just this week’s episode of Outrage Theater - Trump trying to divert attention away from his own dishonesty and incompetence by sputtering ALL-CAPS TWITTER POSTS!!! about the usual crap: which of course, will be dutifully echoed by the GOP/RW echo chamber: and (if somewhat muted) by the “MSM”. And hope that he gets a sympathetic (i.e. hack-ideologue) judge who’ll enable his delaying tactics until he can tweet-storm up the latest OUTRAGEOUS HARRASSMENT!!!!

Mind you, I don’t think it’s going to work very well: as OA points out, this isn’t some crowded New York civil-court docket vs. pissed-off real-estate investors: he’s going up against Congress: mosy of whose members are smarter and more legally-savvy than him (low bar, etc.)

That’s because you’re grown now; your character and personality are what they are. But if that inheritance happened 30 years ago? And you’d had since childhood before that to anticipate it?

My wife sort of choked on the “pay all taxes due” part (her libertarianism rising to the occasion).

We’ve pretty much agreed though if we got some giant windfall like that, the bulk of it would go to others in less fortunate circumstances than us.

In our wills, the bulk of our admitted limited estate goes to the county food bank (a secular organisation) and the village public library.

And I hope that pettiness is off the clock this week.

Man, wouldn’t it be great to see a clear path to his end by the end of this week. All it will take is a fairly powerful Republican to say they’ve had it with Trump pushing everything to the brink and he needs to go for the betterment of the country.

I’m thinking someone like Chuck Grassley could join up with Mitt and who knows what kind of a change that brings. Grassley has already said things about Trump he is not happy about, like the tariffs hurting his state, etc. It will take someone like that to decide Trump going would be better for them politically than Trump staying.

Keep pushing Democrats, never-Trumpers, historians, even untrustworthy asses like Mitt Romney can all help push this fat ass over the cliff!

I dunno. Ford’s sons never did and aren’t even that political. And it’s funny you use the Walter Sobchak quote because this administration feels more like a Coen movie. Nixon’s had the feel that Alan Pakula’s All the Presidents Men got.

It’s tough to say. Not many political dynasties in American politics (a good thing), especially not once someone reaches the level of the presidency (a very good thing). It’s basically, the Adamses, the Roosevelts, the Bushes, the Kennedys, and to a lesser extent the Clintons and Romneys.

You see a bit more dynastic politics at lower levels of government, but it seems like (usually) once someone in the family becomes president, the younger generations want to forge their own path and not be compared to president dad/brother/uncle/granddad

I have little doubt that if Trump loses next year, he won’t attend the inauguration of his successor.

He’s that much of a sore loser. And that much of a prick.

The winner should send him a thank you note on White House stationary. Signed in gold Sharpie for an added dig.

I wonder if Nixon would have had sons if they might have pursued politics. One of his grandsons ran for Congress in 2010 (Christopher Nixon Cox, finished third in the Republican primary for NY-1). But Tricia and Julie came of age in a time when it still wasn’t particularly common for women to run for office.

I mean, it probably wouldn’t have rehabilitated Nixon the way the Trump Administration has (say what you want about Watergate, but at least the Nixon Administration had an ethos).

Julie Nixon Eisenhower endorsed Barack Obama and donated to his campaigns; her sister-in-law Susan Eisenhower spoke at the 2008 DNC.

As noted in that thread, it wasn’t just high school journalists.

Every official and teacher from every Kentucky school district was also barred. The event was actually for so-called school choice advocates and a Koch-sponsored group to plump for charter schools to the Kentucky folks in charge of education.

Your tax dollars at work.

Charter school plans don’t get anywhere in this state, nor do voucher programmes.

In rural areas of the state, such schools don’t exist. The rural school districts depend on property tax and state equalisation funds to survive. Charter schools and religious vouchers would severely diminish rural public schools, so any time a Republican suggests them, voters flood their phone lines with the threat of replacing them with a godless Democrat.

Incidentally, I’ve been reading the Mueller report as time allows. Only up to page 44 and it already paints a really bad picture of the Trump campaign and The Donald already. Oh, and the Russians, too.

I’m considering blogging it in sections, because the more eyes that see the original report the better. Once this one course ends this week, I’ll have more free time to devote to writing and blogging.
