Dear God, hope you got the letter
And I pray you can make it better
Down here
I don’t mean a big reduction in the price of beer
But all the people that you made in your image
See them starving on their feet
‘Cause they don’t get enough to eat
From God
I can’t believe in you

Dear God, sorry to disturb you, but I feel
That I should be heard loud and clear
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
And all the people that you made in your image,
See them fighting in the street
‘Cause they can’t make opinions meet
About God
I can’t believe in you

Did you make disease, and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you?
And the devil too!

Dear God, don’t know if you noticed
But your name is on a lot of quotes in this book
Us crazy humans wrote it
You should take a look
And all the people that you made in your image
Still believing that junk is true
Well I know it ain’t, so do you,
Dear God
I can’t believe in
I don’t believe in

I won’t believe in heaven and hell
No saints, no sinners, no devil as well
No pearly gates, no thorny crown
You’re always letting us humans down

The wars you bring, the babes you drown
Those lost at sea and never found
And it’s the same the whole world ‘round
The hurt I see helps to compound
That Father, Son and Holy Ghost
Is just somebody’s unholy hoax

And if you’re up there you perceive
That my heart’s here upon my sleeve
If there’s one thing I don’t believe in
It’s you
Dear God

From the previous thread:

re: #329 allegro

I think Nancy is playing the impeachment thing very well. Look at what’s happening: she stays firm (with caveats) that they aren’t talking impeachment. Nope. It’s driving folks outa the woodwork now to scream “Impeach!” More very day. The more she holds off, the more come out. Keep investigating hard but hold off on impeachment until she is righteously “begged” to do it and the public sentiment is behind it.

I want to see impeachment proceedings begin at the earliest in the late fall. Let it be televised and discussed over seriously lit holiday dinners. Let it be fresh and ongoing during campaigning before the Dem primaries where they can slam the GOP’s malfeasance over and over again. Make it impossible for Trump to successfully run again when it’s real damn late for the GOP to field a new candidate who has to run from behind in an impossible situation .

Dreaming is good huh.

I don’t think you’re dreaming and agree with you 100%. Nancy and crew have the impeachment process well planned. For most of the summer, various House committees will be holding hearings and investigations on all the findings from the Mueller Report. There will be many hours of testimony and multiple court battles over the known and redacted information from the report. Every week (or day) more and more damning information will be coming out.

And Trump will tweet and fight every inch of the way.

By this fall, a vast majority of Americans will demand the House to begin the formal impeachment process. The voters will want to know where their Senators and Representative stand on this issue. Any politician (R or D) who gets in the way will be steamrolled in the 2022 election.

We’re currently hearing a lot of calls for impeachment but, by this fall, the roar will sound like a 747.

Death by a thousand cuts. And like you said, by later this year or perhaps early next year (after the holidays), there may well be a majority of Americans demanding impeachment.

Just in time for the 2020 elections.

Curing smallpox was a slap in the face to everyone who died from smallpox.

Paying the workers who showed up late to toil in the fields the same as those who toiled the whole day is an affront to those who came earlier.

Does it not say so in the Bible?

Trump Fed pick Steve Moore has become a familiar GOP tax-cut advocate over years at Heritage, Cato, Club for Growth, WSJ

he admits “i’m not even a big believer in democracy” since voters may punish successful capitalists

Capitalists’ success has nothing to do with anything other than their own efforts.

And the Grace of God.

Therefore, we should return to property ownership as a precondition for voting.

City — not church — gets to decide on banners (Goes to the Santa Fe New Mexican)

Summary of the Establishment Clause violation by the city’s historic council (part of the government):

Merchants promoting a historic district of the city wanted to put up lamp post banners with the Virgin of Guadalupe. This is not the Establishment Clause violation, as the district and a major street are named after the Catholic icon.

Where the Establishment Clause comes in is when two of the council members wanted to know why they didn’t get permission from the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which is near the area.

From the article:

What? Board member Frank Katz is quoted as saying, “You should have contacted the church beforehand.” Board member Jennifer Biedscheid is quoted as saying, “We need to be mindful of the church’s opinion.” Why? What church? The article makes reference to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Why would this church’s opinion be important? Do they own a patent on the image? Doubtful, given that the image goes back hundreds of years and appears on everything from coffee cups and T-shirts to velvet posters and motorcycle jackets.

I agree that recognizing the historical role of a religious institution does not necessarily constitute a violation of the principle of non-establishment.

But no, the Church does not own the Virgen de Guadalupe any more than Christians own Christmas.

re: #19 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

This is a tricky gray area, in which I believe that recognizing the historical role of a religious institution does not necessarily constitute a violation of the principle of non-establishment.

They weren’t questioning the historic role of a religious institution. That is not a violation of the Establishment Clause.

They are specifically asking why the merchants didn’t get permission from a particular church before putting up banners on a city street paid for by all the taxpayers. That is a violation of the Establishment Clause.

The body which determines whether people can put up banners on a city street is the city government, not the Catholic Church.

LOL, no. How did that happen?

I was told by the previous caretakers of a place I was staying at in Sedona Arizona that the AC unit was out and needed to be replaced (He also had a bid in to replace it).

I had bought a Virgen de Guadalupe votive candle and placed on the mantle piece. While cleaning, I accidentally bumped the AC switch, and miraculously, it came on.

It can only have been through the intercession of the Holy Virgin.

On last Friday, Iowa state senator Dennis Guth (R-Hancock) rose to give a speech about Earth Day and Easter.

He condemned people who follow science, claimed there can be no moral obligations to protect one another without God, claimed all people are guilty of disobedience to the creator, claimed everyone deserves punishment unless you trust in Jesus, and condemed people who promote Earth Day as godless naturalists.

He managed to cram all that into a three-minute speech. He is another Christian who thinks the legislature is an extension of his church.

Only fear of Eternal Divine Retribution can force sinners to be moral.

And if you are a Biblical Literalist (I assume he is) then you must reject science, history and even logic, as the Bible often contradicts itself, in favor of blind faith and a morality based on guilt, fear and shame.

Keep investigating. Get more of the facts out there.
Let the GOP threatened plan to refuse to comply with subpoenas play out.

Jumping into impeachment now because it “is the right thing to do” is blindly following the rules while our despicable and dangerous opponents cheat and step on Constitutional norms so win.

They actively embraced the fascists since Barry Goldwater, just not openly.

Trump dropped the dogwhistles for sure.

This is why I am wary of every so-called Never-Trumper, even the ones who are openly critical of Donald Trump. They were fine with the fascists and racists in their party before, just as long as they used the approved dogwhistles.

People like Ana Navarro or Jennifer Rubin might be critical of Trump, but they still support the party which enabled him.

I’m no fan of the Libertarian Party, but I have much more respect for the state senator here (Laura Ebke) who said she was done with the GOP’s racism and switched parties.

If you are in prison, you don’t get to vote. That’s part of the punishment. You also don’t get to decide when you’ll eat, when you’ll sleep, when you’ll do a shift in the library or the laundry room, when you’ll be shut in your cell for 23 of 24 hours. You also don’t get a toilet with a toilet seat. And, you don’t get to make decisions about who you’ll vote for and who will represent you. You aren’t represented. You have a guardian—the State. I’m personally fine with the fact that millions of members of the Aryan Knights, the Crips, the Mexican Mafia are not offering their take on who should be running the country.

OK, can someone explain to me how a three or four or five party system would actually be more democratic than what we have now? Beyond more choices, let’s just say, for easy math purposes, you have 5 parties. Each has a candidate in an election. That means you end up with votes being split 5 ways instead of 2, which means that a much smaller group of voters would be needed to win an election. Right? In the case of 5 parties, wouldn’t just a 21 percent total of all votes cast be enough to win?

I am no math genius or for that matter a genius at all, so what am I missing? It seems like more parties would just make a bigger mess. And now that I have publicly shown my ignoramousness, I shall wait for a response…

Oh, and also too, could we stop the practice of counting votes by the second and declaring winners in elections while people are still casting votes? This makes me nuts. Why do we do this?

Real convenient way for states to disenfranchise people they don’t want voting (like African-Americans given felony drug charges for possession of a small amount of weed - oh wait, they already do that).

Meanwhile a (white) megachurch pastor was just convicted for smuggling over a hundred pounds of maryjane through the Mexican-USA border. He was once famous, confidant of Billy Graham.

In most nations, they rarely cover more than one time zone and all the polls close simultaneously. I felt terribly frustrated during my first election in 1980 to know that Reagan had already all but won by the time I got to vote.

We would need runoff elections if we had a multi-party system. Those are common enough in many democracies.

And it should be a Federal Law that vote tallies for Presidential elections cannot be released until the final votes are cast.

First-past-the-post systems have always shaken out into two-party systems in every country (there will be other parties, with little effect, except in parliaments where they can join a coalition and force the majority to do their bidding).

Under our own constitution, if we had more than two major parties, the likelihood would be splitting the electoral vote in such a way no one gets past the post. It’s then thrown into the House, where each state delegation gets one vote for President.

George Wallace nearly did that when he ran in 1968 and took five states (and an additional electoral vote from another).

As for counting votes before the polls are closed and declaring winners, that’s an issue for the press. It’s a thorny problem because of the I Amendment. In some races, the race can be declared before the polls even open (my House district for example). Even though my state publishes no results until the polls close (there is a bit of a snag since there are two time zones in this state), it was a foregone conclusion the underfunded Democratic candidate Paul Theobald would lose to incumbent Republican Adrian Smith.

Theoretically more choices. However you bring up some legitimate points. TBH even in countries where this is more than two parties, there often are two dominant parties and the smaller ones make coalitions with the larger ones. That would be harder to do here though not impossible.

Thank you for posting that, I would never have watched that otherwise. Reminds me of a story about Howard Hughes.

The search for fresh ‘talent’ would begin with a stack of newspapers and magazines. As he flicked through the pages, Howard Hughes was searching for only one thing: photographs of nubile young women.

They might be models, beauty queens or teenagers yet to graduate from high school. Once, it was a girl who had won a local fishing contest.

But was she as pretty as she seemed? From experience, Hughes knew better than to trust a grainy photograph — so he despatched aides to track down whichever girl had caught his eye, with orders to get her to pose for a set of new pictures.

He was very specific about the images he wanted. There had to be three of the girl sitting down, another three of her standing up; she also needed to be shot head-on and in profile, and without heavy make-up or fancy hairstyling.
Within weeks, the girls would sign $75-a-week contracts with either RKO studios — owned by Hughes — or with his personal production company.

Convinced that their names would soon be in lights, they poured into Hollywood, usually with protective mothers in tow. That was fine with Hughes; he knew that most mums were at least as eager as their daughters to do whatever he deemed necessary.

He’s also being sued by the police chief he fired, alleging racist motives.

Plus him coming to my state and in a speech claiming Mike Pence is really a good guy, along with twice now for the apologetics on the “economic anxiety” of white Trump voters.

He is fast dropping in my estimation of what I want in a candidate for our party.

You know, Hillary had a ton of policy stuff on her campaign website and provided details on how those things would happen. I see the other women running are doing much the same and no one’s paying that much attention. What needs to happen here is get people to push Mayor Pete by comparing what he’s doing to Warren and Harris and what they have laid out. Women can multi task, ask any of us who have held a baby on our hip while making dinner and talking on the phone. I like the guy, but he needs to take it up a notch or three.

Great points. TBH more and more I’m seeing the sexism that exists in our society. I really think he (Pete) should be running for Congress or Governor tbh. There’s quite a few candidates who I think should be doing that. The women candidates meanwhile sans Gabbard are all Senators who have distinguished themselves there.

Stephen Moore, one of President Trump’s planned nominees for the Federal Reserve Board, wrote columns decrying the “feminization of basketball,” denouncing coed sports and arguing that women should be barred from refereeing or covering men’s basketball games — unless they are good-looking.

Moore also wrote that female athletes were seeking “equal pay for inferior work” and lamented, “Is there no area in life where men can take vacation from women?”

The statements by Moore, made in columns he wrote for the conservative magazine National Review in the 2000s and resurfaced Monday by CNN, prompted a wave of criticism from women’s rights advocates.

Sure do. My son is on the autism spectrum and I wanted to hear what she had to say about employment and fair wages for people like my kid. That’s what took me to her website. Thinking about all that pisses me off and makes me sad. The unemployment rate among autistic adults sits at about 80 percent. If autistic people go through agencies designed to help them, they get stuck with low wage shitty jobs. No one suggests or offers support for trade schools or college. There is little chance for promotion or advancement in these jobs either. My kid opted out of the system, but that also means he has to spend lots of time masking his autism which is exhausting and impossible, so he’s lost three jobs over the last 6 months. He’s working for a temp agency with a shot at full time with Stein Mart, we’ll see how it goes. But 11.50 an hour is not a living. wage, neither is the 13 he will make if Stein Mart decides to take his status from temp guy to full time employment. There’s got to be a better way. And don’t get me started on Goodwill and their abuse of the system. It’s actually legal to pay disabled people less than minimum wage. No. That has to change.

So few candidates talk about adults on the spectrum. It’s frustrating. It makes me feel invisible. I’m lucky that I was able to get a degree and later my paralegal certificate along with having a supporting set of parents, family, and friends but a lot of other people don’t have that. And I have some abilities that others on the spectrum have a hard time with. I’ve also struggled with underderemployment, another thing that few if any candidates talk about. I think this is why I get so annoyed by the Socialism now types. It’s not that wealth disparity isn’t a problem to me. It IS but you’re going to leave a lot of people behind if you think income disparity is the only or even biggest problem facing us. How the hell is free college going to help Autistic kids get the resources they need? It might help sure but as you get at unemployment is a huge problem in your son and mine’s community and we rarely ever have candidates that actually speak to our issues. I don’t need pity but I want acknowledgment that I can’t go to the jobby job store as easy as a lot of people.
Sorry I had to make a key correct. Underemployment not unemployment though I’ve had that as well.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

I see that Trump’s so exonerated and relieved that the report proves his innocence that he’s moved on to the business of governing the USA.

Oh wait… he hasn’t.

He’s continuing to assail the report, claim he’s the victim of a merciless witch hunt, and that the Democrats and media are being mean to him because they’re reciting facts and logic at him and his corrupt cronies in the GOP and WH.

Fuck his feelings.

He’s a vain, small, evil little man. He never had the capacity to be in the most important office in the nation, and every day proves the point. He’s doing incalculable damage to the nation, and our foreign policy will take years to recover as he’s doing all kinds of damage to our ability to work with our allies and strategic partners.

Russia continues to laugh in our direction at our own incompetence and the ease with which the GOP so easily looks the other way while Russia manipulates things to their benefit. We all know the GOP wouldn’t be so forgiving had Democrats done a fraction of what Trump has done. They’d already be into the trial phase in the Senate. Why? Because that’s who the GOP are and what they do. They always assert the rule of law harshly against Democrats as a means to further the GOP agenda, and ignore the rule of law when a Republican is the target of legitimate investigations that find a multitude of wrongdoing.

A fitness instructor severed a nerve and an artery when she plunged a knife into her hand as she tried to pry the stone out of an avocado.

‘It went halfway through my palm. It made a sound like when the killer stabs someone in a horror movie,’ said Norgart.

I can relate. There has never been a candidate who spoke to the issues of people with epilepsy either, even with a Supreme Court justice with epilepsy.

It’s kind of tough though: There are so many types of disablements or disorders that speaking to each would take up a candidate’s whole time.

I admit I am not terribly familiar with the issues someone with autism faces. That said, the idea of government-financed college (like it used to be) is not inherently bad to any particular group of disabled people. Proper enforcement of the ADA would help in that area.

Considering the disabled are much more likely to be in poverty, and generally (you can always find contrary anecdotes) higher education (technical or college) results in higher pay over your lifetime, reduced costs to pass the gatekeepers of colleges should improve access to those with autism, not ignore those people.

Your mileage may vary, as I know little about colleges or autism.

The problem frankly in my experiences and AnonMom and any other Lizards with family or on the spectrum themselves might be able to vouch for this is this. Our abilities are definitely dramatically under or overestimated. I remember when I wanted to participate in my high school’s poli sci program(it came with a Congressional internship since the teacher behind the program had a lot of great connections and I grew up a half hour from D.C.) and my guidance counselor was a bit worried if I was up to task. Meanwhile, you have people who think we on the spectrum are like supercomputers. Yeah I have some stuff intellectually that I’m really good at. I know my history like the back of my hand but I’m not some savant. So as a result, it’s hard for us to really set ourselves apart as individuals. For the longest time, I would not disclose my Asperger’s in a job interview because I didn’t want to be pigeon-holed as the autistic applicant. I still don’t like being seen as that guy. It’s part of who I am but I want to be HW/John who happens to have Asperger’s rather than that guy with Asperger’s who happens to be HW/John. I do disclose now though because I know that I come off different than most people in initial meetings. I don’t see it but people do so I do disclose now to get it off my back and to use my experiences the past 31 years to show yeah I’m autistic but I know how to kick ass as much as anyone else when I need to.

Well frankly I think the problem with just focusing on the tuition angle is that it ignores that people need help once they get there. I’m a little worried that in zeal for free tuition which I happen to think is a good goal that we may leave other parts of the college experience that people not just those on the spectrum need help with such as counseling, accommodations(One part of being ASD is horrible handwriting, I typed all my essay tests because I had such an accommodation). and other services. So basically you do get more college graduates which I think again is great but as I said yesterday, I want to focus on giving a degree meaning and do something about the underemployment too. And you’re right, there are a lot of disabilities out there so we can’t realistically expect all of them to be acknowledged. However, people with autism are often used as props in the vaccine debate by uninformed idiots. I have never forgiven RFK Jr for the uninformed moronic comments he made about life with autism.

So you are saying the whole American judicial systems is 100% legitimate and there is no injustice to anyone at all for you to make such a statement.

And I note you don’t say anything about getting your rights back after you serve your sentence. I guess you want them all punished forever.

Meanwhile a lot of white collar crime goes completely untouched and they get to vote, etc.

Isn’t it great living in such a caring Christian country?

The journalists’ lawyers argued the police had set them up [by planting government documents on the two journalists] — and a prosecution witness said in pretrial hearings last year that the police had planted military documents on the reporters to frame them for violating the country’s Official Secrets Act. But the lower court found that the reporters had intended to harm national security. And the witness who testified that the police planted evidence was sentenced to one year in prison for violating the Police Disciplinary Act.

Not necessarily. In France there were 11 candidates in the first round of the 2017 presidential elections, and the winner in the second round had 66% of the vote.

In fact in France, unlike the US, it is impossible to win the presidential election with less than 50% of the vote.

One round first-past-the post is nowhere near the only possible electoral system, in fact it’s pretty much the worst possible one.

re: #40 A Mom Anon

Hi Mom - you don’t know me but I often see your name and agree with your points. And I agree with this one: It’s not a two party SYSTEM, it just ends up that way in mature democracies because duh “majority = 50% = 1 / 2”. You can start with 20 parties but you’ll still need to coalesce at least half of them to form a government.

As for calling results before the all the votes are counted - I get where you’re coming from but they are rarely wrong, and the news channels do so like to get their scoops.

In most nations, they rarely cover more than one time zone and all the polls close simultaneously.

In France the presidential elections cover 12 different time zones, from Tahiti time (UTC-10) to Wallis and Futuna time (UTC+12).

It is illegal to report results before the last polling station has closed. This is helped by having the oversees territories vote the day before the metropole, but even in the Metropole not all polling stations close at the same time, rural areas usually close before the big cities.

As usual, American exceptionalism comes down to ignorance of the rest of the world.

As long as they refuse to hire enough people to monitor content, they will not change. They make money off suffering and murder.

They do need to do that. I just don’t look at the medium itself as the problem. I know you disagree and others disagree with me too but it’s abuse of the medium. I’m not in a big rush to overregulate the press because newspapers, radio, and TV can be abused. What does need to happen is they need to do all they can to prevent people from spreading violence.

It’s possible that they can’t keep sane humans in such jobs. There was a recent article, perhaps linked here, that looked into the contracted monitoring operation at one of the SM giants. Hiring, managing, and retention (and mental health services) were in near-collapse.

If they continue spreading genocide, rape and murder threats, &c., it doesn’t seem to me the solution is “well, nothing can be done.” That’s what we have a government for, to protect us from rapacious capitalists who are fine with murder as long as it makes them money.

If some dipwad sends a death threat to the “Letters to the Editor” column of the local newspaper, they won’t print it. They might also call the cops.

Facebook doesn’t do that, and hides behind “we promise we’ll do better next time.” Then the next time. Then the time after that.

Newspapers, television, and radio all employ editors. Faceborg doesn’t.

On this quiet corner of the Interwebs, our esteemed host Mr. Johnson will banhammer someone immediately if they post illegal content.

Over at the more lively Wonkette, when they started getting porn advert trolls they empowered non-commentators (including me) to banhammer them. I think frankly a lot of people don’t understand that SM really is modern communications. Whereas those in the past had letters and the telephone, we have social media. Social media’s got its problem but acting like people should just disengage from it I think really isn’t the solution. Whether we like FB or not, it’s here to stay just like Amazon. Adaptation is the name of the game IMO. I do what Wendell does. I barely ever post any political stuff on FB. I do from time to time but it’s my way of communicating with people and it’s going to be a great help to me once I get out of my grad program too.

I’m no advocate for FB - I don’t even have an account and never will - but I think the sheer scale of the problem that needs to be addressed needs to be appreciated. To hire enough people to monitor billions of posts over millions of accounts is just not going to make the business model work.

I like to work with real-world comparisons (call me a dinosaur). Do we hold all the bars in the country responsible for the conversations that happen within their walls? But we do call the police when crimes are committed.

If there was a way to catch and punish those that actually post the content - real prison time if appropriate - that would help. While the only punishment is just suspension of accounts right now the problem will not cease.

How about if FB can be allowed to rely on public reports of illegal content, but then become responsible if those reports are not handed over to the relevant authorities?

My parents made me watch the news when I was a kid - not so much local news, but definitely world news. Mind you, this woulda been in the ’70s, when the Big Three had actual real news - and foreign bureaus too (I remember all three had news desks in Moscow among other capital cities in Europe).

I’ve always read the paper. Hell from what my parents told me, it’s how I learned to read. The thing I think is that news spreads quicker than it ever has before. Let me use a historical example here. The Titanic sinking. If Fitanic were to sink now, we would know the details immediately. Now this is what’s fucked up about modern city but that rapid knowledge also makes reality easy to spread crap about. Maybe it was better when we had to have time to process the news but because of where we are with how quickly we can communicate- I can send a message to my cousin in the UK and she’ll receive it immediately for example versus 30 years ago I would have had to write a letter or pay an absurd fee for an out of country phone call. It’s a complicated issue. I just think it’s a little different than old print media.

Personally I think you have to balance it. Too few details, and there’s no real direction to your ideas. Too many details, and you have to come up with a policy for everything that comes up, and you’re not encouraging others to solve problems they can. And what happens when you don’t get every detail through Congress.

Sorry to be late responding; I’m way behind the night crew!

Yes! I voted for Obama and for Hillary because I trusted them to do the right thing, not because I read every word of their policy papers (because I didn’t). It is a good thing that they develop their policies, so they are ready to go if chosen, but that’s not the main reason why I voted for them.

I know the overwhelming majority of Facebook is not rape and death threats and promoting genocide (that’s not “politics”).

Facebook is essentially a monopoly. Since it refuses to regulate itself to its own terms of service, then it needs to be regulated.

Most corporations would prefer to regulate themselves than have the government do it. Facebook is being looked at by multiple countries and the UN now for promoting murder and genocide. They’re being checked out here for promoting a digital version of Jim Crow in advertising in violation of the law.

I’m not suggesting social media sites be torn down (even if they do have repeated data breaches of your personal data, then promise to “do better”). They must regulate themselves, or governments must do it.

And by the way, promoting genocide violates international law. I would pay good money to see Zuck go to The Hague.

Telephones and letters are regulated. Send a death or rape threat in the mail or over the telephone and you’ve violated federal law. A threat sent via E-mail depends but is also illegal.

Once again, I fully support regulating the shit out of that stuff. I just think the kill Facebook attitude is childish IMO. Regulate the medium. I’m merely stating that individual based social media is a different character than print media. You wrongly have this idea that everyone on FB is politics. Some of us and I include myself are pretty apolitical on there.

I don’t think ‘mouse is saying that.

What he is saying is even with all the nice social banter we still got Trump through the manipulation of Facebook and Twitter; even spilling into YouTube.

It is not about you and Wendell doing the right thing. It is all the others that do not.

It is Facebook realizing they have a huge, comprehensive and powerful database they will sell to people to manipulate the platform for other than social uses. And that database loves to record the bad and good of all kinds of comments because all of that is very usable for the manipulation.

In other words that what makes Facebook bad is also good. It just depends what you are trying to achieve and if the people using it have good or bad intentions. So what I may not like is something someone else does like because they get to identify like-minded and then influence them.

I think that is why Zuckerberg is so protective of what he has and why he will probably never want to change. All the information, good and bad is important.

If he gets regulated so too does his data and then it becomes less potent because it no longer reflects those whose comments and posting get booted.

I don’t know. I just think it’s very tricky. How do we find objective ways to find who is acting in good and bad faith? I see plenty of people who think they’re just trying to spread ideas who are spreading disinformation without realizing it.

That’s the opinion of one man and while I acknowledge Scalia knew more about the Constitution and law in his pinkie than I did, he was wrong about that. If the Constitution was meant the way he says it was, we would have the same document we did in 1787. We do not have that. The Constitution and this is the real wisdom of the founders was intended to be amiable to changes with the times. The basic principles of the Constitution remain constant but the finer details can and do change with the times. That’s why we abolished slavery, implemented income tax, and gave women the right to vote. Scalia’s view of the Constitution was and is very narrow. And frankly he was fine with his own biases on certain matters.

Right there’s that too. It’s time to stop acting like the Constitution is a sacred document. It is what it is, a great legal framework, a declaration of principles if you will but not the ultimate arbiter of what is and is not possible in society.

The Bill of Rights btw isn’t technically in the Constitution. It had to be added because people like Madison and Jefferson insisted on it. The Constitution itself had to be written because the Articles of Confederation wasn’t working.

Yeah I know how you feel about FB and Twitter. I just disagree. To me, the problem remains that people abuse the medium rather than the medium itself. I know you disagree but that’s how I feel. Something’s gotta change though.

I have no love for social media. I actually tend towards what you are saying because the Internet has been full of ratfuckers since the days of ARPANET and long before even “The Great Renaming” of USENET. Now September never ends and it’s 24/7/365 ratfuckers.

There were splits and divisions all through Soviet history, Stalin kept a lid on it but they bubbled right back up to the surface after his death: the Russian nationalists vs the Internationalists, the socialist purists vs the market-leaning liberals, the hawks vs the less-hawkish, heck, there was even a budding environmentalist movement in the USSR…

We used them in the Army to keep vegetation down in large ammunition storage areas. One less ignition source compared to powered mowers. A good contracting officer could get them at low/no cost in consideration of the forage.

God, I’m always so conflicted hearing from Republicans who want Trump gone. Partly because

1) They most likely voted for him, or refused to vote for Clinton if they didn’t, and are now blindsided and shocked that he’s a fucking disaster.
2) They probably are convinced that Trump came out of nowhere, and it has nothing to do with the racist, hyper-religious, anti-intellectual downward spiral they’ve been supporting since Reagan.
3) They’d be fine with someone like John Kasich, who will do all of the evil shit they want done while coming off as not insane.

I know, “enemy of enemy” and all that horseshit, but just once, I want one of these fuckers to straight up apologize/repudiate how they’ve voted over the last how-many years.

They hate Trump because he’s given them everything they want, and clearly elucidated what they’re thinking, while being incredibly fucking obvious about it.

I need to see a balance of the two. Grand ideas without any plan/means to accomplish them is… Bernie. All talk, no ability to make ideas into realistic policy. I gotta see that ability. Likewise I need to see good planners who are also good executives, able to inspire support and, again, make ideas into realistic policy with follow through.

For something different: cbc.ca

They knew it had to exist, but they just couldn’t find evidence of it. Now, after decades of searching, astrophysicists have found verification of the first molecule that formed minutes after the Big Bang.

The helium hydride ion (HeH+) the scientists detected wasn’t the original one created just after the Big Bang, but it has the same molecular structure — helium combined with hydrogen — they theorized formed at the time.

“For the first time, we’ve detected the same type of molecule in a nearby nebula,” said David Neufeld, co-author of the study in the journal Nature, who’s a professor and astrophysicist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

“And it’s exciting, because it’s the first time it’s ever been seen in space.”

The first thing I thought of hearing this last night is something I haven’t seen or heard anyone mention. How would those votes happen under those circumstances where prisoners are completely dependent on the “kindness” (if you will) of the guards and warden? For instance, would a vote for a Democrat ever be allowed to be cast if the warden is a Republican? Do we think those votes would ever be private or freely made?

I sure don’t.

Ben’s practicing Evangelical Judaism. I know there are conservative sects, but Ben’s requires you to nail yourself to the Torah every day.

It’s all very selective for him though. He sure as hell bears false witness a lot especially when it comes to transgendered men and women he’s never even attempted to understand. He accuses us of worshiping the government. He worships Capitalism.

I would love for Texas to lose a rep because of that.

Yeah how do you have a secret ballot in prison? That’s a great question. And honestly I’m not sure how I feel about people serving sentences for violent crimes and voting. Once people serve their time, no question, voting rights restored but while being punished, I can’t totally agree. There’s gotta be some punishment and loss of freedoms if you break the law. Doesn’t mean you should get ruined forever mind you but I do think there should be some losses of privileges that come with citizenship that come with criminal punishment.

Have a vote monitor, and let the prisoners in one at a time. You can even do one per room to speed things up. Make the voting box so that it can’t be opened from inside the prison.

I’m less wary about giving voting rights back once you’ve served your time than I am gun rights. A lot harder to kill someone directly with a vote, regardless of the crime you service sentence for.

There is more than one way to insure votes go the way you want when you have absolute control over the voters.

I understand that but the principle is time served so you should regain your rights and that even if we don’t like guns includes guns. Now that said, I’m extremely uncomfortable with giving a released murderer or rapist or person with a history of violence access to guns. But someone who was busted for possession or something like that? I have to support it. It’s a sticky area.

Outside of prison there is freedom and choice. There is exposure to information whether or not one chooses to partake in it.

Inside prison there is no freedom or exposure to any information not approved by the keepers. Therefore informed votes are not possible even if not outright compelled to vote a certain way with guaranteed private vote (narrator: it would never happen).

BTW, I am completely in favor of restoring voting rights once out of prison.

And this is the problem with people who also believe that the Bible is the True and Immutable Word of God.

Our Founding Fathers had no idea of electronic mass communication, International Corporations (aside from state-sponsored monopolies like the British East India Company) or modern weapons of mass destruction or even small-scale mass murder

The Founding Fathers also did not know that small hand held weapons would be invented that can enable one person to kill an entire room of people in 10 seconds. Those guys were content to deal with each other with weapons capable of only about 3 shots per minute by a trained soldier.

I am also not sure but I believe that restoration of voting rights to felons after serving their sentences varies from state to state

A guy in our circle, an ex-convict, recently succeeded in suing Alabama for felons’ rights. A quirk in the 1913 constitution denies voting only to those convicted of “moral turpitude” felonies. The term was never defined until his suit. As a result, most Alabama felons never really lost their rights—they just didn’t know it. Because most felons are housed out of their home county, or even out of state, most can now vote “absentee” by mail.

He explains the generous AL lapse as the consequence of the assumption that only white felons ever would vote—Blacks were not seen as voters in 1913, felon or not.

Which is why all those laws that exist now, from the Federal rules about restricting full auto to all those California and local laws stand up in court just fine. What stands between us and an assault weapon restriction or ban is legislative reluctance, not the near bankrupt NRA or the 2nd A.

Which tells me we can get after Twitter, Facebook and haters on the same without revoking or diminishing the 1st, keep the FBI out of our phones and computers without warrants etc.

The founders could not imagine radio or emails. But the courts chose radio as no warrant as anyone can tune in but emails are personal. But it took a court with the Constitution behind it to enable holding back the FBI and police.

About 500 yards: about the distance that an 18th-Century commander would consider “artillery range” and near the extreme limit of musket-shot.

The old saying of “don’t fire ‘til you see the whites of their eyes” comes from the fact that that was just about the range you would need to be sure of hitting your target.

Main source of blue in medieval France. Strongly linked to Our Lady (Notre Dame).

From your link:

The dye chemical extracted from woad is indigo, the same dye extracted from “true indigo”, Indigofera tinctoria, but in a lower concentration. Following the Portuguese discovery of the sea route to India by the navigator Vasco da Gama in 1498, great amounts of indigo were imported from Asia. Laws were passed in some parts of Europe to protect the woad industry from the competition of the indigo trade. It was proclaimed that indigo caused yarns to rot: “In 1577 the German government officially prohibited the use of indigo, denouncing it as that pernicious, deceitful and corrosive substance, the Devil’s dye.”[23] “… a recess of the Diet held in 1577 prohibited the use of ‘the newly-invented, deceitful, eating and corrosive dye called the devil’s dye.’” This prohibition was repeated in 1594 and again in 1603.[24] In France, Henry IV, in an edict of 1609, forbade under pain of death the use of “the false and pernicious Indian drug”.[25]

Yeah. The Czech Parliament is slated to take up legislation regarding that sometime this year.

Most likely, we’ll end up doing whatever Germany does. And if Germany moves to permanent Summer Time, we’ll almost certainly do the same.

re: #217 Anymouse 🌹

Facebook is essentially a monopoly. Since it refuses to regulate itself to its own terms of service, then it needs to be regulated. …

Certainly agree with part of the discussion: FB is really like the mail — except visible to more people, with a lot more discussion. Would you really want the government to be listening in to your phone calls or reading all your mail? When my mother was in the service during WWII, all her letters were reviewed by censors and a few actually had sections blacked out. I don’t see how we can or should implement anything close to this; AI isn’t capable of reviewing text and deciding what is inappropriate.

It’s easier to spread misinformation through SM — but every phone call I receive from political organization or scammers also has misinformation as does much of the mail I receive from the same sources. Even letters from family can be replete with lies. I don’t know how to deal with this — but it does seem that if a lot of bots or others report a post, then at least humans should evaluate the posting before consigning the author to Twitter or FB gulag.

I wouldn’t place any credence in his statements on anything, though I suppose some GOP Senators might begin thinking that if Trump has even lost a hack like Verret, it’s time to reconsider their position. Can’t find a link accessible from the EU, but I’m reading that Washington (the state) is going to move to permanent Daylight Savings Time. The legislation passed the state House (it already passed the state Senate) and is now headed to Governor Inslee’s desk for his signature.

No more setting the clocks back, it looks like.

We (Arizona, with the exception of the Navajo Nation) do not go on Daylight Stupid Time. So basically, our Mountain Standard Time is Pacific Daylight Time. Now to have California join us there permanently as well. :)

Pence doesn’t have the same intense base that Trump commands. He isn’t the hater they like. So, politically he suffers from that, especially if it can be turned that it was Pence supporters who pushed Trump out.

Pence isn’t all that well liked by people in his own party. He actually was saved politically by being picked VP which is one of the reasons I think they took him. They knew he would be loyal because they kept him politics as he was almost done in Indiana.

Sure, McConnell will control him but I think the base loses its interest and maybe that even takes some of the boldness out of McConnell and also the scare of that Trump base. McConnell can be a little looser without that base because he won’t have to fear them as much. Might make him 1% more workable.

And really, how much do you hear Republican talk about Pence? If he was all that, they probably would have run Trump out by now.

Best car Dad ever had was a 1967 Chrysler Newport that ran flawless for 5 years. Then Dad got a 1973 model and it was the ultimate lemon, endlessly breaking down. Swore Dad off of Chryslers forever and he switched to Fords.

As for me, I can’t afford the insane auto insurance rates here in Los Angeles so I use the Metro system.

I had a ‘68 Newport. Big boat. Big 383 engine, 8 miles to the gallon ;-). Drove it from Mississippi back up to Pennsylvania in 1980. I didn’t need to stop in any motels, the back seat was a twin bed in itself.
