April 16, 2019 | Stephen Thompson — Gary Clark Jr. had good reason to sweat. The blues-rock singer and guitarist opted to play his first-ever Tiny Desk concert — in front of a huge crowd that warmed the room considerably — while clad in a thick knit cap and heavy jacket. Plus, he’d brought his young son on tour with him and had to contend with a traditional parenting dilemma: How do you bring your kid to the office and still get work done?

But once Clark and his formidable band got done cranking out three songs from this year’s blistering This Land, he wasn’t the only one in the room who needed to wipe away the sweat. Clark’s set leaned toward some of This Land’s softer sentiments — “When I’m Gone” is about missing his family on the road, while “Pearl Cadillac” exudes gratitude for his mother’s sacrifices — leaving its more politically incendiary material for louder live shows. But these songs still roared with the assurance and force of a showman at the top of his game.

Just what we need…a measles outbreak in Los Angeles County…

With five measles cases confirmed by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health this month, public health officials are investigating the origin, while figuring out how to maintain the outbreak. According to the county health department, the infected patients were exposed to the measles at five sites throughout Southern California, including two restaurants in Glendale and La Cañada Flintridge.

The restaurants in question are El Pollo Loco on 1939 Verdugo Boulevard in La Cañada Flintridge. The exposure occurred on April 11 from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The second exposure was from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at El Sauz Tacos on 4432 San Fernando Road in Glendale. The remaining three exposure sites were at LAX, UCLA, and the main library at Cal State Los Angeles in early April.

It is an artifact of the Russo-Japanese war of 1905.

Prior to that war, the Qing Dynasty ruled Korea. Afterward, the Japanese Empire had troops all over Korea.

Then in a series of forced treaties, the Japanese Empire (along with a letter of understanding from Secretary of War Taft) took control of Korean affairs, culminating in it giving up all control of its territory in 1910.

After WW2, with the Soviet Union in North Korea and the USA in South Korea, and then the Korean War, North and South Korea were left with a sticky wicket in regard to normalising relations with Japan.

The agreed upon text between the three nations was that all treaties signed between the Korean Empire and Japanese Empire prior to 1910 were considered “already void.”

I’ve been poking my nose in on and off all day from here. Been doing meat-world things. Today and tomorrow are the annual sports meet for the university students, so I have no classes for two days. Next week is the May Day holiday, so I only need to work Monday, because Tuesday is now a free day and Wed-Sat are the holiday. Have to teach on that Sunday though.

I learned yesterday that I will no longer be eligible for a work visa in China (the Z visa) because of my age. My residence permit expires July 15. While I may be able to work for my current employer with a business visa, I decided to play it safe and file for my Social Security retirement benefits. It’s three years before my full retirement age, so I won’t get as much each month if I had waited, but I’d rather have some secure income over the summer when my employer wouldn’t be paying me anyway.

Meanwhile, I have a phone interview with another potential employer in China tomorrow, but even there the Z visa is out of the question.

I didn’t know there was an upper-age limit for work visas. I know there isn’t here. In Prague (at least) there’s retirees, usually from the UK, Canada and the US, working as TEFL teachers.

The oldest one I knew was 70 at the time - of course, that was over a decade ago. But he was enjoying it. He was one of those “I have to do something, I can’t just sit around all day waiting to die” types.

I figure it has more to do with “face,” as Chinese are required to retire at age 60. Having older foreign workers still receiving full pay (and better pay) than similarly qualified Chinese instructors may have rubbed the sitting Politburo the wrong way. OTOH, who tf knows? The Chinese government never explains its policy changes to anyone.

I doubt you’d have any problem getting work here, especially in Prague or Brno (Brno has an up and coming IT scene).

Getting a TEFL certificate is easy enough. It’s a one-month class, and you’re done. That’s required by the Ministry of Education here, but that’s it.

Does your “China” work actually have to be done in China? A year or so ago we talked about Daughter1 and her video instruction gigs. She has several, which turned out to be legit, though she gave one up because the administrator was “erratic”. She teaches several hours per day from anywhere she can get a good bandwidth. That has even included a state park, where she sets up while visiting her daughter’s college. The timezones make her life strange, but this gives her an income stream while caring for a severely autistic child.

Briefly in and out:

One of the co-designers of what is considered the oldest working digital computer, Dick Barnes, has passed away.

He was involved in designing the Witch computer (a Dekatron storage computer—decimal rather than binary—starting in the late Forties and putting it to use in the Fifties in the United Kingdom’s atomic program).

It was considered lost. It was found in storage disassembled, taken to the National Museum of Computing, and Mr. Barnes worked on its restoration in 2012.

The article includes a video describing its use, and shows the operator loading a program to run the computer. (It loads via punched tape, switching is done with solenoids, and storage is done in the Dekatrons.)

Conspiratorial thinking that “big pharma” is keeping essential oils out of the public eye because it would cut into their profits. (Nevermind that if any of the claims for essential oils other than they might smell good were true, pharma companies could make them themselves.)

Oh, and they are definitely not pyramid schemes. They are perfectly legal multi-level marketing (and much of the essential oil business is run by the Mormon church).

The story of the 2020 Democratic presidential primary so far has been the historic size of the field, which will end up in the mid-20s before all is said and done. And the size of the field is, in large part, a reflection of how Democratic politicians view Joe Biden: as a paper tiger, whose fall will make the nomination anyone’s for the taking.

Everything said about Biden applies equally to Bernie.

Bernie’s older, panders to the old white guys, and his message is still the same economic nonsense that he lost on in 2016. The current president of the Mormon church, Russell M Nelson, has decided to destroy 189 years of search engine optimization by insisting on this loghorrea of words, to wit, from last October:

This is why I have sort of lost faith in the whole idea that Congressional Republicans are suddenly going to break ranks over this. They haven’t done it yet, they marched into last November’s slaughter singing his praises because that’s what their wingnut base wanted, I don’t really believe that this is gonna be the “final straw” any more than his other dictatorial moves. Why? Because they’re not opposed to the idea of a dictator, so long as he’s their dictator.

That particular rule, which I found quoted on BBC a few years back, smacked me in the head like a 2x4. I’ve had students get the adjective order wrong (“a Chinese beautiful woman”), but till I saw that in print, I had no basis to correct them. Chinese students (and their teachers) always want to know how English grammar works, because their exams stress it so much. From what I gather, the order is a function of permanence and/or opinion. A woman will always be Chinese (in origin) but her beauty depends on the beholder. Likewise, in “a beautiful, young Chinese woman” the young part is less permanent than the Chinese part.

But don’t quote me on that.

Spanish has two different forms of “to be”, depending on whether it’s a permanent or temporary being.

Soy de Los Angeles — I’m from Los Angeles, and always will be.
Estoy en Los Angeles — I’m in Los Angeles, and maybe next week I won’t be.

Estar is derived from the Latin verb stare, to stand.
Ser is derived from the Latin verb esse, to exist, to be.

Portuguese also has “ser” and “estar,” but AFAIK French only has “être.” Not sure about the other Romance languages, either.

Defining deviancy down:

The California State Senate voted to ban schools and principals from suspending students for “willful defiance” of teachers, staff, and administrators.

The Senate approved SB 419 Monday by a vote of 30-8. It moves to the Assembly next.

A similar bill was vetoed by Governor Jerry Brown last legislative session.

Under the new version (Senate Bill 419), students in grades 4-8 wouldn’t be suspended for disrupting school activities or willfully defying school authorities, including teachers and staff. The bill would also ban schools from suspending students in grades 9-12 for the same thing until January 1, 2025. The law would apply to both public and charter schools.

Existing law already prohibits schools from suspending children in grades K-3 for disrupting or willful defiance. Existing law also prevents schools from recommending the expulsion of students in all grades for disrupting or willful defiance.

Students could still be suspended or expelled for other acts, including threatening violence, bringing a weapon or drugs to school, or damaging school property. Teachers could also still be allowed to “suspend pupils from class for the day and the following day who disrupt school activities or otherwise willfully defied valid
authority of supervisors, teachers, administrators, school officials, or other school personnel engaged in the performance of their duties.”

As part of the new bill, superintendents or principals would be asked to provide alternatives to suspension or expulsion that are “age appropriate and designed to address and correct the pupil’s specific misbehavior.”

The GOP must be crushed. Women and minorities will be among those who benefit the most from this.

As a white guy, I’m good with this. Why? Because decades of oppression and white privilege means that even I as a Jewish guy still have more privilege and benefits from a system that inherently discriminates against minorities and women. Raising up others doesn’t diminish my position. It raises the voices of others who have been suppressed for far too long.

Denying women and minorities equal protection under the law is something that can’t be undone in a day or even years. It’s something that you have to fight every day. Some Democrats in the race get it. Some pay lip service. Some think economics trumps all else.

If those cheating attempts fail and he loses, he’ll still refuse to concede and try to litigate the results. The one last resort I didn’t consider is that he resigns just before he’s supposed to officially leave, thus allowing Pence to serve the remainder his lame-duck term and pardon him for everything.*

Democrats have to hammer the GOP for Trump.

Democrats have to go all in on retaking the Senate.

They have to multitask and build on the Blue Wave in 2018 with another tsunami in 2020.

And then they have to keep fighting to begin peeling back all the damage that the GOP has done to the judiciary.

It’s a fight. In a physical fight we call the best tactic “violence of action”, an unrelenting and terribly intense onslaught until win or lose. In politics, the non violent analogy works. The best thing Dem candidates can do is attack Trump 95% of the time.

We can and must make sure that retaking the Senate is a priority, along with retaking the WH.

Holding the hearings and getting oversight is on the impeachment path. Possible outcomes can include falling short so many ways. Russian fuckery, Trump bulkshit coupled with media mendacity also work against Democrats. But making sure that the turnout is so huge and overwhelming that the GOP can’t sustain itself is what it will take. That means making sure that Trump can’t pick off states on the margin to get to 270.

And it means making sure that whoever the Democrats head the ticket with, that they’re going in no holds barred and will take the fight to Trump everywhere and not take a single state for granted.

Counter point: what if you do the morally convenient thing (not impeach) and still lose?

Sometimes, you have to do the right thing and to hell with the consequences. Especially on something this big. If you set the precedent that all of Trump’s criminality is acceptable actions for a president, then you render Congressional oversight irrelevant.

And from a practical political view, as Warren suggested recently, there’s value in forcing every Republican in Congress to go on the record in saying whether they believe Trump’s actions are acceptable.

I believe that three to four months of House hearings, followed by another month or two (or more, depending on how many articles are passed) of a Senate trial would probably destroy Trump in the court of public opinion. After all, Clinton’s job approval was high only because the economy was hotter than any time since the end of the Second World War, his personal numbers were terrible:

Less than 50% of Americans had a favorable opinion of Bill Clinton “as a person” in most months except for October
The percentage rating Bill Clinton as “honest and trustworthy” was at only 38% in January, and that number slowly dropped to 24% by January 1999
Substantially less than half of the public said that Bill Clinton “shares [its] values,” a figure that dropped from 42% in January 1998 to 35% in January 1999
Less than half said that Bill Clinton shows good judgement

Six months of building and laying out a case against Trump, on the eve of his re-election campaign is probably a smart political play.

Truthfully, at this time I don’t have a good answer.

Where my problems lie are in this political era with one party that absolutely seems prepared to not do anything right and they get the reward and it gets seen as good politics by the media. Looking at the poll numbers in retrospect, the best way to read them was that Americans felt that Bill’s actions were reprehensible and he was a cad, but that it was a personal matter and not something that deserved to be made the subject of an impeachment proceeding. It’s why Bill today is less of a force in DNC politics than he was immediately after his presidency, because the political goodwill have fostered for the positive aspects of his terms in office have been swamped by decades of conservatives hammering on about how he’s a lying and cheating bastard.

A vote is longer-lasting than a speech or a press release where they express being “troubled” by the revelations but insist that Mueller “cleared” him of wrong-doing. A vote is harder to defend than explaining away a statement made to the press.

Good video. I like Joe. My personal feeling is he could be doing the very same by teaming up with Obama and other former Democrats to go out and push for Democrat candidates. Use their experience and already well-built reputations to be party elders saying do the right things.

I just have the feeling Joe Biden is at his height right now and a run will tarnish him in much the same way Hillary was tarnished and that reputation gets slagged in the election.

Good news: between muting and snoozing, I’ve successfully been keeping my FB feed free of RWNJ memes and talking points from friends whose politics I don’t want to know about.

Bad news: my ENTIRE FREAKING FEED is now full of self-righteous fellow Democrats preaching about why their particular perfect candidate is the only acceptable choice and [Biden/Beto/Harris/Mayor Pete/Warren/Bernie] can’t possibly be the nominee or win.

Job 1 is getting Trump out of office no later than 1/20/2021.

There is no Job 2 until we accomplish Job 1.

And we only get Job 1 done if all the factions and ideologies and generations and localities find a way to hang together behind whatever imperfect candidate emerges and stop bashing each other to bits along the way. Yeah (bites tongue hard), even if that ends up being Bernie. (I actually would rank Tulsi lower than Bernie, but as long as she stays solidly at 0.0% in the polls, I don’t feel like I need to stay up at night worrying about that particular remote possibility.)

The challenge, to which FB’s tools are completely inadequate, is the friends who *sometimes* post things I really want to see about our shared professional interests or about their personal lives/hobbies/families, but who also fill up their feeds with incessant political memes. Blocking them completely means I miss things I’d actually like to engage with.

FB does offer a “hide this post” option, so maybe if you do that often enough, the algorithms (hell, they’re so good at violating your privacy otherwise) will figure out what you want to see less of.

Usually where “ignorance of the law” is an actual excuse, it’s in cases where the law is uniquely complicated and intricate.

While I think justice was served by a conviction, I think there is a disparity on which cops get punished. And that there is a definite problem with training of cops that selects for safety of the officer over safety of the public.
