If a politician/candidate is running for office and they treat their own staff like shit, you don’t have to guess how they’re gonna treat their constituents once they’re in office.

John Havlicek died today.

Memories of the Celtics glory days—especially the Eastern division playoffs with the 76ers in 1965—and Johnny Most—“Havlicek stole the ball.”

Sniff.

It seems pretty clear that the the Russian attacks in the 2016 election weren’t initially tagged by the US Intelligence Services (institutional inertia) and certainly not by the primary platforms for the attacks (Facebook and Twitter) because they were making money hand over fist.

But the Obama Admin, once informed, was certainly aggressive in response to the Intel.

Was it aggressive enough? Certainly a topic for discussion, but the follow-on response to the attack by the Trump Admin has been woeful to the point of useless. It has, in fact, been advantageous to the Russians in regard to the 2020 elections.

Rosenstein is not just extrapolating beyond the data, he is accusing the wrong party about how the attack was handled. It is the R’s who have refused to hamstring the Russians in the 2020 elections by requiring changes in how Facebook and Twitter moderate their platforms.

This isn’t an existential threat, it is a clear and present danger to our Democracy.

He’s been in Washington for 2 years to the day, and was the US Attorney for Maryland from 2005 until his appt. as Dept. AG. I’m not sure how long he needs to have been at it to get his pension, but considering the pattern I’m not sure it’s much more than base party loyalty at this point.

I wonder if he thinks laying low serves the country better than challenging the autocrat in the White House trying to take over the democracy. All these people seem to think Trump has the interests of the USA in his heart. He does not, and never has. He will tear everything down to prevent his tax returns being released and his crimes being prosecuted.

re: #14 Citizen K

I’m not sure Japan can take another 6 years of Abe in general.

It’ll be interesting to see how Abe gets along with the new emperor (five days to go). The post-WWII constitution got rid of state Shinto and the deification of the emperor. While Hirohito may have felt the loss, Akihito has been very much in favor of the current situation. Abe would like to go back to a more nationalistic tilt and he demonstrates this by going to the Yasukuni shrine (where the souls of war criminals are enshrined). Akihito made it very clear from the start of his imperial rule that he wouldn’t go to Yasukuni and that has been a point of contention between him and the traditionalists and people who would use traditionalism, like Abe.

It is unlikely that Naruhito, the next emperor, will change in that regard. Here’s a recent article giving a backgrounder on him:

apnews.com

I’d note that Naruhito’s heir is his brother Akishino, and *he* caused consternation in recent months with the Imperial Household Agency (a bunch of stuffed shirts who basically want to remythify the imperial family) by stating that the Imperial family, not the state, should pay for the Shinto ceremonies around his brother’s enthronement. It’s not especially expensive (I heard that all the arrangements were in the neighborhood of $20 million), but Akishino was concerned about the separation of state and Shinto. We could use some more of that here.

It’s worth noting that the current empress was raised in a Roman Catholic family, although the discussion of the subject of religion is studiously avoided. Naruhito’s wife, Masako, was raised in Russia, the USA and Japan, she went to a Catholic high school in Japan, graduated magna cum laude from Harvard with a degree in economics and speaks five languages. Masako has also tussled with the Imperial Household Agency and there’s been some vague talk that the pressure of the agency may have pushed her into depression.

Again, it will be interesting to watch, but dissension and change between Abe and Naruhito isn’t going to be especially obvious.

THREAD:

from the article:

Nearly 2,500 have been investigated on 10 or more charges. Twenty faced 100 or more allegations yet kept their badge for years.

Journalists obtained records from more than 700 law enforcement agencies, but the records are not complete for all of those agencies, and there are more than 18,000 police forces across the USA. The records requests were focused largely on the biggest 100 police agencies as well as clusters of smaller departments in surrounding areas, partly to examine movement of officers between departments in regions.

That is the flip side of having a cultural tradition dating back thousands of years.

I see that in Germany as well: Although they are very progressive when it comes to matters of maternity leave and day care, women are still seriously under-represented in business and politics.

Less so in politics, but there are very few women in management level of the major banks and insurance companies that own and control the bulk of the German economy.

For that, women have a solid lock on domestic and relationship politics, at least based on my personal subjective and anecdotal experience.

The numbers are staggering, but consider this.

We’ve known about this situation with the NYPD for decades in one form or another and we still haven’t gotten the Department to address serious structural issues that contribute to keeping those abusive cops on the street, or in uniform.

The USA Today report mirrors what we see with the NYPD - right down to the statistics that a small number of cops engage in the largest number of excessive force incidents. Off the top of my head, it’s something like 80% have no claims against them, ~15% have 1-5, and 1% have 20 or more.

Yes, sounds similar. In Japan women have traditionally been in charge of things like the household budget and overseeing children’s education. Before direct deposit, the husband handed over his envelope of cash (salary) each month and the wife would give him an allowance (of course, the husband had a say in how money was spent, particularly high cost purchases). Not sure how the more modern families manage things these days.

But, yes, Japan ranks pretty low in terms of women in high-level jobs in the corporate world.

probably been said, but i gotta reach conclusions all by myself and that can take time

- dorsey and twitter say they wont (not cant) ban white supremacists because they cant write an algorithm that wont also boot off a bunch of republicans.
- and they’re too cheap to throw lots of bodies at it to police it manually.

- we all pretty much instantly noted that if R’s didnt tweet such bigoted stuff, they’d be fine. and that being a politician (elected or no) is not a pass to be an asshole. certainly not on a privately owned messaging service.

- and it was pointed out a lot that R’s would get booted not because they’re R’s but because their posts are indistinguishable from the hate filled crap twitter says it otherwise would want to target.

so:

- if twitter could just boot off the white supremacists et al and filter out the R’s, then the R’s remaining on twitter and spewing that hate, would be the twitter bigots

- this only changes who and how many spewers are left
- twitter continues to support filth

so in what bizzaro world is that solution better than focusing on language and context, regardless of the pedigree of the poster?

The US is running record deficits, which means (and always means) that government policy is to heat the economy.

This is the lie that the “conservative” Republicans have been exposed as believing - in fiscal conservatism.

We see a huge stimulus funded by record US debt.

This will be repaid later with significantly devalued currency.

That means those of us on fixed (retirement) incomes are in deep trouble in a couple of years.

I have no regrets about throwing the Gold Star away and this is another reason why I want nothing to do with it.

Many Americans were shocked by their tax bills this month. The new law was especially costly for our nation’s Gold Star families, who saw the taxes owed on their survivor benefits skyrocket.

Theresa Jones has been a single mom to Anthony and Hunter for almost six years. Her husband Landon, a Navy chopper pilot, died in the Red Sea during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2013.

“When I saw that tax bill I was shocked at how much these boys owed on benefits that were given to them,” Jones said.

The boys each received about $15,000 in survivor benefits last year. Jones was hit with a tax bill of $5,400 for them, up from $1,100 from the previous year.

Jones was hit with a tax bill of $5,400 for them, up from $1,100 from the previous year.

taxing them is a way of devaluing / reducing them through the back door

The RepubliKKKlan goal is to destroy Social Security and Medicare and they will gladly bankrupt the US to steal those benefits from us.

You are so right. This has been the Republican goal for decades and they may succeed if they aren’t voted out in 2020 — and that means voted out from both the legislative and executive branches of government. The only hope of recovery is to repeal the GOP tax law in its entirety and rewrite the estate tax provisions so that a larger percentage of the wealthy are forced to pay a significantly higher percentage of their total assets. We also need a redesign of the tax treatment of carried interest.

In 1981, Pruneface Reagan and his Republican AND “Blue Dog” Democrat pals tilted the table from the needy to the greedy. Each RepubliKKKlan President since tilted the table more to the greedy CEO parasites.

It’s time to tilt the table back to the needy and make the greedy pay for the party they’ve been having since 1981.

The greedy had the party and stuck the needy with the bills. It’s time to make the greedy pay the full amount of the bill plus interest.

Before direct deposit, the husband handed over his envelope of cash (salary) each month and the wife would give him an allowance (of course, the husband had a say in how money was spent, particularly high cost purchases).

There’s a saying in Glaswegian: “I wouldnae wanna come home to her wi’ a broken pay packet!”

I am perfectly happy to let my partner run finances, especially inasmuch as she has a degree in Economics from Beijing University and works for the German Federal Reserve Bank…

I got into a brief FB exchange yesterday with someone who complained about Twitter suspending accounts of conservatives — she ultimately gave James Woods, Jack Prosobiec, and Robert O’Neill as examples. Other than purging real bots and perhaps identifying foreign agent, SM platforms may be in a no-win situation. We really don’t want censors reading every word everyone writes — and you cannot hire enough people to review the language anyway, when hundreds of millions of users are on these platforms. It’s not only vile memes and personal attacks — what if they are spreading false information? A news organization can impose strict rules on its employees and control what they publish. But I’m not really sure what can be done if a private citizen starts promoting lies/distortions like Pizzagate or Uranium One or Seth Rich under their personal account.

Figuring, painfully slowly, how to properly search for a job in 2019. Thanks to a long freelance career with a handful of stable clients, it had been 20 years since I last looked for a salaried role. Damn. What a humbling experience the past year has been!

Tip #1: Customized resumes? Or at least multiple versions for different job categories? Ain’t nobody got time for that!

Well in reality, it looks to me like nine times out of ten one has to let go of old concepts about a CV being a comprehensive or static document. Just not how the game is played anymore. Gotta change with the times and blend in with the hep young cats.

Also there are good ways to create resumes and online profiles to fend off age discrimination. Having crossed the half century mark, it’s a thing that happens.

I wonder if these platforms could put in some kind of a notice that is triggered by key words in content that would pop up and tell the person writing the content and then those that read it, there are facts that do not support the comment and if you want to further educate yourself here is a link to something like a Wiki encyclopedia that has the alternatives. Maybe it could also mention something could be dangerous, illegal, racists, etc., etc.

Maybe it makes some aware they are off into the weeds of wacko land if they keep getting pop-ups and it either makes them read the facts or they grow frustrated and stop posting the bullshit and go back to talking about family, friends, events, etc.

Maybe the database keeps a score of the crazy factor for the user and if they score high the pop-ups become more and more, bigger and bigger and maybe even to the point it just opens another page with the facts.

Or it could say, YOU ARE A LOSER! Get a Life.

Just a thought.

I wonder if our schools could make modern media and social networking a topic of instruction, teaching young people to distinguish between an Internet presence and a flesh-and-blood person, how to identify dubious or misleading content and how to find and verify reliable sources.

Believe me, I know your position. I started doing freelance design to help cover some of my college costs, rent, etc. to help my parents out with it all.

From that I built a client base that built into a partnership with another guy from college. That lasted for a few years and then I went on my own for a few more. Then a client asked me to be his art department for a small tech advertising agency which turned into 17 years as in house art department for racing teams and racing and auto parts.

Then because that whole industry changed the company was closed and I was out at age 58.

In a city with a good art college along with Ohio State also offering graphics, etc., 58-year-olds are not needed. There are a million 35 and down taking jobs as unpaid or low paid interns.

I’ve managed to struggle my way to this year for full retirement with a plan of doing some small jobs for extra and moving into painting and drawing which I always wanted to do.

Yeah, it all sucks. It was all good for some time and then boom…not what I was expecting at this age.

know what else there isn’t a law on: “executive privilege”

White House lawyers plan to tell attorneys for administration witnesses called by the House that they will be asserting executive privilege over their testimony, according to two officials familiar with internal plans who, like others interviewed for this story, spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Quick status: Dear old mother is still in hospital. They’ve switched her to stronger antibiotics for the pneumonia and she’s now in atrial fibrillation, which with all her heart problems she’s never had before. Eldest sister flew in last night from Gettysburg. Younger sister flies in today from Boston. Got 6 1/2 hours sleep at home last night thanks to eldest. First time I’ve been home since Monday, heading back over there in a few.

Thank all of the Lizards for all the good wishes! Yeah, pneumonia is a big, fat, hairy, fanged bear to deal with.

Did any of you read this a couple days ago? Good read on General/President Grant.

Interesting stuff, and jibes with some things I’ve recently read about historians’ reassessments of Grant’s post-war reputation. Most recap histories (well, non-Lost-Cause ones, anyway) tend to give General Grant high marks for pretty much everything, but tended to deprecate President Grant as an honest, well-meaning, but ineffectual Executive who let his Administration devolve into a cesspool of corruption and grift.

Ronald White’s piece does hint at a possible reason, though….

Grant’s fall from American grace largely coincided with the rise of white supremacy in the early 20th century. During that period, leaders who stood up for the rights of African Americans were not often lionized.

re: #94 ObserverArt

I turned 51 this week, so the process for me has involved a lot of gaming out scenarios for the next career stage. I’m also in a fortunate position because the youngest of my four kids is 19 and the last one living here. I had basically a 15 year corporate career and a 15 year freelance career (nonprofit communications, publishing, and web design management). Now I need another 15 year arc.

I’m in a good market - greater Seattle. But I’m too far away from the bigger corporate suburbs and even downtown is a haul. I’m interviewing for office management, executive assistant, project manager type roles mostly. But I’m almost certainly going to be earning half of what I was a couple of years ago at best, comparable to where I was twenty years ago. Which is a drag. With that stability though I can likely over sufficient time reignite and reinvent my freelance work in my meager spare time.

The story of King Canute is also a lot more nuanced than is presented to us: he was simply fed up with court sycophants telling him how great and powerful that he was that he went and sat at the seaside and ordered the tide not to come in to prove to them that his powers were limited and mortal.

But it is related to us as a tale of hubris.

Democrats quickly running out of fucks to give about going easy on Trump and his crew…

A Democratic lawmaker on Thursday ratcheted up warnings to the Trump administration amid a growing standoff over subpoenas and oversight requests the White House says it will resist.

Rep. Gerry Connolly threatened jail time for White House officials who are declining to comply with congressional committees’ efforts to conduct oversight of President Donald Trump’s administration. It’s the latest salvo in the escalating battle between the White House and congressional Democrats, who have scaled up their oversight requests following the conclusion of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.
Connolly, who sits on the Oversight Committee, told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on “The Situation Room,” “We’re going to resist, and if a subpoena is issued and you’re told you must testify, we will back that up.”

“And we will use any and all power in our command to make sure it’s backed up — whether that’s a contempt citation, whether that’s going to court and getting that citation enforced, whether it’s fines, whether it’s possible incarceration,” the Virginia Democrat added. “We will go to the max to enforce the constitutional role of the legislative branch of government.”

18 months for infiltrating the NRA and promoting Russian interests among the GOP and right wing circles.

That’s a veritable slap on the wrist compared to someone who accidentally voted in an election.

But it still shows that the Russians were actively involved in manipulating the election. The Russians used right wing views and predilections to further Russia’s interests because they took advantage of all the bias and know-nothing extremism exhibited by the GOP and a willingness to look the other way while benefiting from Russian acts.

you have to factor in why people buy and sell what they do when they do.

- did they need to raise cash for some other purpose - liquidity has value
- was there a better investment/return for that money in something else
- was it a rebalancing of a larger portfolio
- did they come into extra cash that otherwise would have sat idle

So much learning.

I hit that a year ago. Being laid off in my early 50s and had not been real job hunting in 20+ years. I opted to declare I’d won the rat race and have essentially retired at this point. So now I have more leisure time and do volunteer work or help friends with minor IT problems to keep myself busy.

And the decision was helped by a few things working in my favor. First, I got a fairly liberal severance package that gave me salary and continued insurance coverage for a year. Second, I have enough savings to carry me for a few years at a reasonable living, and then my accumulated 401K funds start becoming available with no penalty to carry things even further. My main stress point right now is whether I can keep affordable and effective health insurance given the continued assaults on the ACA provisions since I am a walking precondition at this point.

Try being an almost 59 year old woman who spent 25 yrs raising a kid full time. I gave up college and a career, not because I wanted to, but because I literally could not afford to go back to work. Special needs daycare, occupational therapy, speech therapy and psychiatrist and neurologist visits and so on we’re not covered when my son was a kid. School resources helped a lot but were not enough. I ended up at school fighting all the damned time for services for 13 yrs. And don’t even get me started on getting help after high school. I was told by a temp agency I am not employable because I have no marketable skills. I have not received a single callback in 8 yrs of looking for work. The people I worked for in the past are either dead or I have no idea how to find them or even if they’d remember me. It’s scary. I have no retirement funds and neither does my husband really. He’s having to change careers after all his health issues and at 52 he’s having trouble too. I see us losing our house unless we can sell it within the next year unless a miracle happens. Like being older means you have nothing to offer. You become invisible.

He put captured black Union men into slavery regardless of their prewar status. He wasn’t kindly and I sure as shit don’t care that he stood with his state when George Thomas and Laura Jackson (Stonewall’s sister) chose the Republic.

Laura said she “would rather know that he was dead than to have him a leader in the rebel army.”

General Lee gained a certain reputation for “humane gallantry” because he did not allow his troops to pillage or plunder, especially when they were invading the North.

Except that they did anyways. Including seizing free blacks and sending them south into slavery. And Lee’s planned campaign that ended with the battle at Gettysburg was essentially a large-scale raid to seize supplies and livestock from a northern state as a way to take pressure off Virginia.

Laura is the Jackson we should be celebrating here. The narrative we got and you know this better than me SK is that guys like Lee and Stonewall had no choice. I realize re-fighting the Civil War is generally a lost cause*, but I’d disagree that Lee is particularly “overrated”. Considering that he had to fight most of his campaigns with notable disadvantages in manpower and materiel, he did pretty well with what he had to work with. And (maybe just IMO), the Army of Northern Virginia never really did “fall apart”: it had to be beaten down and ground to bits the hard way. I’d agree, though, that the “Mythos” bit is pretty overdone: but I think modern scholarship (as with Grant) is more objective that it was, say, before the 1950s.

In the early 60s, the US Navy named two Polaris ballistic missile submarines for Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson respectively.
The naming convention for these vessels was that they would honor “Americans who made major contributions to freedom.” Others so honored included George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Patrick Henry, etc.
41 for freedom ballistic missile submarines.
This was around the time of the Civil War Centennial, which, in many ways, was the high water mark of the Lost Cause mythology. I remember the almost Disneyesque aspect of the celebrations, with scrupulous attention to the need to honor both sides equally and the paramount need to emphasize national reconciliation and unity on those terms. Even at the time, I thought is was a farce, and most scholars today (and many then) tend to agree.

Well, the phone ringing just woke me up. I’ll be going back to bed in a few minutes. It was the Veterans Administration with an update.

The VA has moved the diagnostic mammogram they want to do on me to “urgent.” They already told me there are no facilities in Sidney to do it, and they are checking with Scottsbluff now. (The VA in Cheyenne cannot do it.)

There are also no facilities in the city of Cheyenne which can do it, so they will schedule me an immediate appointment in Fort Collins, Colo. if the hospital in Scottsbluff is a no-go.

re: #144 DangerMan

it’s a bargain because both sides agreed. and both sides agreed because they both got what they wanted and/or needed

you have to factor in why people buy and sell what they do when they do.

- did they need to raise cash for some other purpose - liquidity has value
- was there a better investment/return for that money in something else
- was it a rebalancing of a larger portfolio
- did they come into extra cash that otherwise would have sat idle
- was this a good investment compared to alternatives (ie a savings account)

this and more all matter in how people make these decisions

Of course. But I don’t believe most buy/sells fall in those categories. Most are betting on rise/fall.

Trump bankrupted a casino. That is what he as his fellow Republicans want to do to the US. They don’t care because the top echelon of the society is not who are hurt in collapses.

if possible, stay in equities as much you can. Every day I keep my fingers crossed that Trump won’t say or do yet another stupid thing that causes the markets to tank, but I stay in equities under the belief that companies typically own tangible stuff, which means even if the currency is heavily devalued, they will simply find compensation for services they provide. Bond holders will of course be wiped out, including those like me looking forward to social security. That will be gone as they bonds won’t default, but it will be like Russia where they are sending me a check for the equivalent of 50 dollars a month.

That’s why there is room in history for good biographies to re-assess various historical figures. Especially if there is sufficient historical sources to work from, or new sources become available.

I think both Truman and John Adams benefited in their reputations from the David McCullough books.

And there is probably some good sources of WW2 information to be mined as some further documents are declassified or found misfiled somewhere. Foreign archives will still be a source as well. It’s been interesting to see how some of the campaigns and decisions in the war are viewed differently now that more German, Japanese, and Russian documents have been taken into account.

Southern racists held up their end of bargain, too, and became some of the most loyal and jingoistically patriotic Americans. Even today, racists maintain this pretense.

The South got half a loaf or less. Without a movement to reconcile we would remain two societies—a country and a colony. The only way to actually defeat the separatists was to pull them back into a true union. That’s a process that is not yet complete, and might yet fail.

Esperanto has a big part in Philip José Farmer’s Riverworld series.

Riverworld is an artificial “Super-Earth” environment where all humans (and pre-humans) are reconstructed. The books explore interactions of individuals from many different cultures and time periods. Its underlying theme is quasi-religious. The motivations of alien intelligences operating under ultra-ethical motives are explored.

Trump thinks the solution to gun massacres is to have more guns. Same as always from the NRA. It’s the answer they want to hear, despite all evidence showing that places with strong gun laws have lower per capita death rates.

The South “winning” the peace hurt them a bit in the long run. Additional turmoil and Jim Crow was a disincentive for capital to be spent there to rebuild or develop new industries. It’s one reason the region languished while the Northeast and Midwest industrialized, modernized, and became wealthier.

Cornell University researchers learned autonomous vehicles can perceive three-dimensional objects in their path with greater accuracy than Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors, but at lower cost, via a simpler technique. The team determined analyzing images from two low-cost cameras on either side of the windshield, offers triple the accuracy of LiDAR. Cornell’s Kilian Weinberger suggested such stereo cameras could function as the primary means to identify objects in lower-end cars, or as a backup system in higher-end cars outfitted with LiDAR.

The Bernie Bros will never select Biden; they want a progressive and are not fans of Obama. They are more likely to demand that Bernie run as an independent.

Meanwhile, the Biden supporters are not interested in some faux “progressive” with no credentials and with a foreign policy too similar to Trump. They are likely to flock to some other white male candidate — perhaps Bennet.

ObserverArt  Apr 26, 2019 • 11:20:25am

I heard some people talking the other day on MSNBC about the one thing that really really upsets Trump.

His worst fear is his big victory in the EC giving him the presidency becomes illegitimate.

It is one of the driving factors in his obstruction apparently. He fought Mueller because he thought from the get-go it was a signal his legitimacy was threatened.

So, I think it would be very beneficial if everyone called his presidency illegitimate. It would be interesting if congress started using the word. And some of the media. He is the sensitive type, so you don’t have to directly say he is illegitimate, just say it is a question and it will be one to haunt him for all time.

Boom! Off goes the Trump. It will cause him to do stupid stuff and hopefully end up being clear it is all obstruction.

Practice typing the main ingredient: Trump is an illegitimate president.

Maybe add some extra spice: His election vote was manipulated by Russia.

Put in a pre-warmed oven and bake ‘til done.

There were a couple of them in the movie but I think they were soft-bodied touring types. Lawrence had 9 Rolls-Royces in his desert force, including both armored types and utility-bodied “tenders.” He thought very highly of them and used them in long distance raids against the Turks. They set a whole new standard of mobility.

I mean, we can quibble about what the majority might end up doing but I didn’t make my claim up, polling does support the notion that Biden and Sanders are the top second choice right now. Not just amongst their own supporters either, but among supporters of all candidates. I’m not happy about it but I’m not gonna deny it either.

Former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) are the most popular potential Democratic presidential candidates, but they are also the top second choices among registered voters, according to a Morning Consult survey released this week.

The poll found that Sanders was the second choice for 27 percent of Biden’s supporters. Another 15 percent of Biden supporters said they would back Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) while 9 percent said they supported Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).

Among Sanders’s supporters, 26 percent said they supported Biden as a second choice, followed by Warren at 16 percent and Harris at 7 percent.

Among Harris’s supporters, 20 percent said they would choose Biden as a second choice, while Sanders was not among the top picks as a backup option. And among Biden supporters, 15 percent said they would support Harris as a second choice.

However, Sanders registered strongly as a second choice for Warren’s supporters, with 25 percent saying the Vermont senator and 2016 runner-up for the Democratic nomination was a backup for them, followed by Harris at 14 percent and Biden at 13 percent.

Among former Rep. Beto O’Rourke’s (D-Texas) supporters, 20 percent said they would pick Sanders as a second option, while 18 percent chose Biden.

IMO Trump has never had a loss that had any measure of accountability to it. E.g., his bankruptcies were ‘victories’ in that other people were left with the losses.

If Trump ever is forced to a reckoning, he will have a Hitler in the bunker style meltdown as his narcissistic delusions (finally, at long last!) crumble.

My main takeaway is that most of the extreme vitriol from Berners against Clinton in 2016 was rooted in raw sexism and the decades the GOP spent demonizing her. Biden is somewhat of a gaff prone goof, but because he’s a dude the blowback from that shit tends to roll off him like water off a duck, and he doesn’t engender quite the same level of unearned hatred.

aside from name rec, biden is, to many people, the one candidate who knows the job, can do it from day one without training, and has foreign policy cred as well.

for all bernie’s experience in politics, im not sure how clear it is that he ‘truly’ understands the job and can do it from day one as opposed to he just wants the job and expects people to do what he says.

and that goes for all the other candidates with lots or a little political experience. they all “want” the job, think they would be good at it, and i suspect many would be, however they are not ready and are going to have to learn it

im not comparing anybody to anybody else past, present, or future, just an observation on those currently declared

I think Biden and Bernie are the top 2 right now because of name recognition. Americans are a lazy lot and very few pay attention to the degree we do. Few have the time.

It is so early yet and with the volatility of our politics at the moment, polls mean little.

What was it — 77% haven’t decided yet? I’m in the same category — have excluded people, but waiting for the debates to see which candidate I can most relate to. It’s not just a matter of policy because it’s usually not clear what are the major issues that will confront a President. I also want someone whose judgement and character are sound, even if they don’t reflect my personal preferences on every policy.

I think the difference is some people see politics as necessary and important and others have some form of a defeatist excuse like “my vote doesn’t count” or “they do what they do anyway” etc. so they blow it off.

There’s still plenty of them that think that the politicians will take care of it. That’s what they were elected for. They still don’t think they need to worry because what’s going on hasn’t truly affected them. That’s what most of the conservatives around here think.

The reaction to Trump’s Robert E. Lee comments is a perfect example of how Twitter enables the propagation of evil right wing garbage. It’s everywhere today.

Putting history into perspective is not “erasing”.

And here, we have to slap them with this famous quote from Virginia-Born Union General Henry “The Rock of Chickamauga” Thomas:

[T]he greatest efforts made by the defeated insurgents since the close of the war have been to promulgate the idea that the cause of liberty, justice, humanity, equality, and all the calendar of the virtues of freedom, suffered violence and wrong when the effort for southern independence failed. This is, of course, intended as a species of political cant, whereby the crime of treason might be covered with a counterfeit varnish of patriotism, so that the precipitators of the rebellion might go down in history hand in hand with the defenders of the government, thus wiping out with their own hands their own stains; a species of self-forgiveness amazing in its effrontery, when it is considered that life and property—justly forfeited by the laws of the country, of war, and of nations, through the magnanimity of the government and people—was not exacted from them.
Report to General Ulysses S. Grant (17 November 1868)

So much learning.

I’ve been an adjunct for all but basically 3 years of my working life, so I’m an absolute child when it comes to applying for real jobs. I wouldn’t even know how to give a successful interview. The last fulltime gig I had, my interview was so terrible that the only reason I got hired was because the first person they hired took another job and left them in the lurch. Basically, I just need a job where I show up and they say, “Can you teach 4 sections, two on a MW and two TR?” And I say, “Where do I need to sign?”

That is why you see the stars ‘n’ bars so many places that are nowhere near the south. It is the identity that is important, not anything to do with history as such as the continued history of white racism.

That Confederate battle flag never flew over any state capitol or public building, they flew the Confederate national flag with three stripes and thirteen stars.

Displaying the battle flag in such cases is is a clear provocation and assertion of their perceived dominance.

And back when I was reading US Civil War history more and reading forums you’d see the whining about how the KKK had “stolen” the Confederate Battle Flag from those who simply wanted to honor their ancestors who had honorably served in the CSA armed forces. Of course, that was only when they were challenged about the use of it as a racist symbol. And not much out of them regarding how a bunch of southern states suddenly decided to incorporate it into their state flags in the 1950s for no apparent reason whatsoever.

re: #94 ObserverArt

30 years as an adjunct. 30…fucking…years. I can’t get hired full time because English is a PhD that everyone in the fucking world has no problem managing. An M.A. with 30 years is like yesterday’s coffee grounds getting reused for another pot. I don’t have a fucking portfolio. I don’t even understand what a portfolio is supposed to be. My entire career has been people handing me a departmentally-generated syllabus and saying, “Don’t worry about not having the parking decal yet. They don’t start ticketing until Thursday and we’ll have one put in your mailbox by then.” Teaching philosophy? Show up. On time. Do what I’m asked. Grade with some sense of speed. Go home. So I definitely understand the whole “extra cog unneeded for final assembly” part of a career.

WaPo just put out an article on Rod Rosenstien doing everything to keep his job by kissing up to Trump.

Rod Rosenstein is just another asshole in the Trump camp. This is why Rosenstein is backing Barr’s interpretations.

Rosenstein thinks he was doing good because he kept Mueller going.

What a fucking mess this all is. Watergate was kids selling lemonade on the street corner.

WaPo - ‘I can land the plane’: How Rosenstein tried to mollify Trump, protect Mueller and save his job

Rod J. Rosenstein, again, was in danger of losing his job. The New York Times had just reported that — in the heated days after James B. Comey was fired as FBI director — the deputy attorney general had suggested wearing a wire to surreptitiously record President Trump. Now Trump, traveling in New York, was on the phone, eager for an explanation.

Rosenstein — who, by one account, had gotten teary-eyed just before the call in a meeting with Trump’s chief of staff — sought to defuse the volatile situation and assure the president he was on his team, according to people familiar with matter. He criticized the Times report, published in late September, and blamed it on former deputy FBI director Andrew McCabe, whose recollections formed its basis. Then he talked about special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation of Russia’s interference in the 2016 election and told the president he would make sure Trump was treated fairly, people familiar with the conversation said.

“I give the investigation credibility,” Rosenstein said, in the words of one administration official offering their own characterization of the call. “I can land the plane.”

The episode illustrates the political tightrope Rosenstein has had to walk in his two years as the Justice Department’s second-in-command. To keep his job, the deputy attorney general has worked to mollify an often angry Trump, while at the same time protecting the special counsel’s investigation of the president and his campaign. Rosenstein’s actions have come under renewed scrutiny, as he has played a key role in releasing Mueller’s findings in a way even some of his supporters say has been overly favorable to Trump.

In a statement for this article, Rosenstein said: “The only commitment I made to President Trump about the Russia investigation is the same commitment I made to the Congress: so long as I was in charge, it would be conducted appropriately and as expeditiously as possible. Everyone who actually participated in the investigation knows that.”

Oh my god that is FANTASTIC…

He laughed. “That’s why you’re the best I got, Lisowski. Now you get out there and find those bitcoins.”

“Don’t worry,” I said. “I’m on it.”

I put a quarter in the siren. Ten minutes later, I was on the scene. It was a normal office building, strangled on all sides by public sidewalks. I hopped over them and went inside.

“Home DepotTM Presents the Police!(r)” I said, flashing my badge and my gun and a small picture of Ron Paul. “Nobody move unless you want to!” They didn’t.

“Now, which one of you punks is going to pay me to investigate this crime?” No one spoke up.

“Come on,” I said. “Don’t you all understand that the protection of private property is the foundation of all personal liberty?”

It didn’t seem like they did.

“Seriously, guys. Without a strong economic motivator, I’m just going to stand here and not solve this case. Cash is fine, but I prefer being paid in gold bullion or autographed Penn Jillette posters.”

Nothing. These people were stonewalling me. It almost seemed like they didn’t care that a fortune in computer money invented to buy drugs was missing.

I figured I could wait them out. I lit several cigarettes indoors. A pregnant lady coughed, and I told her that secondhand smoke is a myth. Just then, a man in glasses made a break for it.

“SubwayTM Eat Fresh and Freeze, Scumbag!(r)” I yelled
.

Matt Miller on Nicole Wallace is questioning if Rosenstein was another Mueller prejudger who “landed the plane” by fixing the outcome of the report.

John Heilleman is going further and asking since Rosenstein was in control of Mueller’s investigation, did he actually control Mueller to help mute (rig) the outcome. He wonders what Rosenstein was saying to Mueller the same time he was telling Trump he had this under control.

There has been plenty of question as to why all of a sudden did Mueller release his report when there was speculation there was more go. Was Rosenstein and Barr together as a team putting an end to it because it had gone on long enough (and was turning out to be troublesome for their boy)?

Our entire Justice Department needs to be investigated. It has turned into The Donald J. Trump Corruption Protection Division.

As usual, it was always projection. They accused the DOJ and FBI of being in cahoots to destroy Trump…while they themselves were trying to subvert both to go after their own enemies. It seems the only reason why Hillary is not presently occupying a prison cell is because Jefferson Beauregard refused to go along with Donny’s demands.

Scientific American has an article of work they are doing with prosthetic limbs controlled by the “intentions” part of the brain. Seems the part they are targeting is where the intention to move a muscle or do some other objective first fires. It then fires to the part of the brain that actually sends the signal to do the action. Seems like a good avenue for experimentation, and they have had some success.

Music break: Bruce Springsteen has released a new tune called ‘Hello, Sunshine.’

[Embedded content]

Video

Good tune. Reminds me a lot of ‘Everybody’s Talkin’ by Harry Nilsson. Some gorgeous pedal steel work on this track.

Thanks for this. I had heard that Springsteen was going for “that late 60s/early 70s sound” and I wasn’t quite sure what that meant until now.

Kind of soulful & melancholy. The feeling of someone who is just tired of all the chaos & fighting, but who hasn’t given in to full-on despair & anger.

Very much an anthem for our times, eh?

And it all was and still is.

To further clarify, I have a Master’s Degree plus more academic hours than most PhD holders.
But because I am a woman, I have never made as much as my male counterparts in any job situation…I have even been required to train a new grad who is hired at a position better paid than mine.

I am old enough to remember when women were not allowed so many perks as they have today.
I had to get my father to co-sign for my first new car purchase (the ill fated Honda Civic that managed to survived its F5 tornado ride in 1974).
When I first started college at University of Cincinnati in 1970, undergrad females were required to live in the dorms, in a sorority house, or in their parents’ home.
Back in those days, women were not allowed to have a credit card in their own name, or take out a loan for anything…unless one was one of the wealthy elite.

If my personal CV anecdote came off as overt bragging, dammit, I worked hard all of my life and got paid shit for it just because that’s what life was like for women.
And still is for that matter.
