This article blew my mind. They are straightening out strands of DNA by feeding them through nano-tubes and looking for the points where they start replication, to see if they can figure out why those points go awry in cancer, and like diseases. My mind isn’t big enough to handle that!

A week ago Banjo suddenly got super lethargic and didn’t want to swim. Took him to ER on Tuesday and found he had advanced tumors on his spleen and liver and it was inoperable. Took him to the beach on Thursday and he chased one ball into the water.

He woke me up at 2am last night to go pee, so we had one last naked walk outside together…he hadn’t woken me up in a couple of months. This morning, his front legs wouldn’t hold him up. So we said good-bye about an hour ago.

He gave me one last goofy look before the vet arrived. God I feel an emptiness right now.

Broadway and Avenue J, Lubbock Texas, 1952:

This is the Great Plains Life Building (now Metro Tower) under construction. At 20 stories and 274 feet it has been the tallest building in Lubbock since it was completed in 1955. For years, it was the tallest building in the world to have survived a direct hit from an F-5 tornado (in 1970) and is still the second tallest.

Interesting that only one of the killers (at the Sikh Temple shooting) died on the spot. The others were all arrested with little or no effort to escape. It is as though prison is their martyrdom.
It also seems that anti-immigrant rhetoric has triggered and empowered antisemites. The Tree of Life shooter and the Poway dirtbag both specifically blamed Jews for illegal immigration.

Rommel’s “fame” is largely due (amusingly) to excuse-making by the Allied leadership for why it took them two years to win what was largely a holding action. Whenever people on the street heard about the latest setback or loss in North Africa, it was due to the “Desert Fox” and his “tactical brilliance” rather than poorly-trained troops being expected to fight with whatever they could get their hands on.

A week ago Banjo suddenly got super lethargic and didn’t want to swim. Took him to ER on Tuesday and found he had advanced tumors on his spleen and liver and it was inoperable. Took him to the beach on Thursday and he chased one ball into the water.

Oh, shit. I am SO sorry. Putting a family member down is just the absolute worst.

The guilt, the helplessness, the knowledge that that you are doing the right thing and absolutely HATING yourself for having to make the decision.

But it’s part of welcoming an animal into your life. The worst part.

I’m having a little cry right now. Hang in there, Darthstar, we’re all with you in your grief.

Well, we don’t have cable, so we are two episodes behind everybody else and won’t see the series until it is released on DVD.

Another drive-by post-and-run, sorry!
Relieved to be able to report better news on my front today. After a scary few days, the current antibiotics finally seem to be working against my mom’s pneumonia. She’s awake and aware; talking coherently; eating again and able to take her pills. All five of her kids are here so I have backup. The doctor says she’s turned a corner; long recovery ahead but a way better chance of it.

Of the achievements in a long lifetime, the one she keeps harking back to is raising five kids who in their 50’s & 60’s all like each other. We disagree on some things, but none of us have gone over the Fox-edge (so far, knock wood.) I am so very blessed to have my sibs and in-laws, and so sorry for my only-child who won’t have a squad at his back when he has to deal with his elderly parents.

My son told her this morning, “Don’t do this again! You scared me, you wicked old lady!” She said, “I scared me too!” Me three, I will note. Will see where we are in a few more days, still have the fingers crossed.

This shit absolutely does not happen “by mistake.” Also, recruiters are middlemen, they don’t invent job requirements, they get that shit from the hiring department manager. Lastly retraining isn’t enough, people need to lose their jobs over this shit, they’ve exposed their employer to potentially criminal liability and massive fines by openly violating federal labor law.
