So weird that people still have this image of LGF as a hotbed of anti-Muslim sentiment. That shit was like 15 years ago!

People who were kicked out years ago and still hold resentment. It’s not that they think of us that way, they want to portray us that way.

It’s no accident that the Putin influence machine is so cozy with the NRA. They want us to kill each other off. Wayne LaPierre is a traitor and a monster.

Yes indeed. Among other things she taught me how to take down the Islamophobes on the internet. Absolutely made me a better blogger by calling me out on some bullshit from time to time. And we made encouraged one another each other to be better photographers.

Us too Charles, us too.

I think that CL would be horribly bored and distressed over the quality of the right wing trolling of this country.

Used to be a time when our opposition would try and hide their ignorance and racism and outing them actually helped expose the cause.

Now, no one cares that the flat-earth embracing, climate change denying, anti-vaccinating, racist, anti-non-approved Christian, ancient alien believing, democracy hating, fascist cheering, amoralistic, generally stupid ass bigoted hicks run the country anymore.

CL is missing what I hope is the worst of it.

My good news.

My daughter applied to a bunch of graduate schools (Master of Public Health). She just got accepted to her number one choice: Yale. But that’s not even the best part. She called up the dean and asked for more scholarship $. They doubled the original offer. Another great part of the program is that since she is interested in law and health she gets to take a few courses at Yale Law School (my ex and I both joked that she is going to meet her future husband there). Anyway I’m a proud dad and things like this keep me going. Did I mention my daughter got into Yale.

That blows donkey balls. At my father’s graduation when he got his PhD at Denver University, Gail Norton - Secretary of the Interior under G.W. Bush - spoke. She talked about “healthy forests initiatives” to prevent wildfires. Basically she was like “we need to ramp up logging big time, no trees, no fire!” It was pretty stupid, I could see my pops’ eyes roll to the back of his head a few times while she spoke.

TPM usually sticks to politics and policy, but they had one human interest story years ago that I remember fondly.

Jack Abramoff was an exceptionally large man. Like, almost fat-retired-NBA player size. Which is why he wore bespoke suits from a specialty DC tailor.

When he was sent to prison… a dozen of his suits were at the tailor shop, almost finished and partially paid for.

TPM had a reader who by happy coincidence was EXACTLY THE RIGHT SIZE. He was also to buy all those suits for about 10% of their usual price. He was so very, very pleased… especially since he was of an income bracket that can usually only buy one or two suits a year at the Big & Tall Shop.

The thing is, there’s actually been a big uproar about this. Years ago, former Indiana Senator Evan Bayh was invited. There was a big kerfluffle, and he wound up not speaking (it’s unclear to me whether he declined the invite or it was revoked). Despite the huge backlash from alumni across the country, the university administration has steadfastly backed the Vice President, and I can honestly say I’m kind of ashamed to be a graduate right now.

Well, the good news is he’s only a PFC, so his scope of influence would normally be significantly reduced

“… “Imagine if young SS members and Hitler youth were given free range by Hitler to go into the country and root out all the old aristocrats (who by in large betrayed the Nazis) and all the old way of thinking,” Carver allegedly wrote in one message. “Would have been great.”

In another message, Carver allegedly wrote that it “would be a nice great thing” if “all the Jews disappeared tomorrow.”

In June 2017, Carver allegedly wrote that Dylann Roof — the white supremacist who massacred nine black worshippers at a Charleston, South Carolina, church — was “kinda low tier lol. Shooting up a geriatrics in a church is soft target shit, the reasoning and action isn’t bad.”

Carver also allegedly posted about his service in the military. “First sergeants are officially all homosexual Jews who will die during the revolution,” he wrote.

Three days before that message, he appeared to make another chilling statement.

“Soldiers, criminals and workers make the best Nazis,” he allegedly wrote. “Just a fact.” …”

The outrage needs to be accompanied by alumni telling the university “well, we guess you don’t need our endowments to the university then.” Without that, if the chancellor wants the VP, he’ll get the VP.

It would be wonderful if the majority of the student body walked out of the graduation ceremony on television.

I don’t know what will happen here. Because the majority of the alumni and students are “God-fearing Christians”, and because the popular perception is that Mike Pence is a “good Christian man” (Narrator: He is not.), I doubt that will happen. Obviously, commencement is too close for plans to change, and the Vice President will speak as the administration intended. The long-term consequences may yet be significant, but we will see.

IIRC, the definition of a Darwin AwardTM is an individual who has supposedly contributed to human evolution by selecting him- or herself out of the gene pool via death or sterilization by his or her own actions, and an “at-risk survivor” is someone who has narrowly evaded sterilization or death by actions which if successfully having lead to sterilization or death would’ve incurred a Darwin AwardTM.

FYI, the professional response to a misfire is, put a stick next to the tube to indicate it has misfired. All loaders and firers are to steer clear of tubes marked with sticks until they have been flooded. EVEN IF you see a shell launch from it, you don’t approach the tube until it’s been flooded.

737/A320-class, in the river near a naval air base, means a mid-air emergency resulting in an emergency landing call. I’m guessing it wasn’t a MAX set to auto-crash mode.

Ran off the runway. P-8s (737) are stationed at NAS JAX

I would have assumed that observers would have noticed the radar on a P-8, but that’s a fair point. Still, something went wrong and they did not go to space today.

There is no obvious rader on a P-8, it’s an anti-submarine plane.
But, been confirmed it’s commercial. Seen plenty of charter flights landing at JAX over the years

When I have seen it in old novels and such it was usually with respect to clothing, specifically men’s clothing.

For cloths, only custom suits. But guns? Almost all the classic English custom builders or Connecticut Shotguns here in the US were always called bespoke. The meaning is not so much special or custom as simply “made for someone specific”. Thus a bespoke shotgun would have a stock that had its pitch, drop, & cast all to a specific fitting.

Going to the add-on manager, it now appears that Mozilla’s site is down.

Thanks guys.

Mozilla let a cert lapse/expire.
You might consider alternatives such as Waterfox, PaleMoon, Basilisk, etc —which have
xpinstall.signatures.required false by default in about:config

Short of trying a different browser, consider that making that change manually in Firefox (where that entry is true by default) should undo the de-activation of your addons, but you likely would still not be able to update addons via Mozilla’s website. If/when they get their cert issue fixed, you should probably change it back to false true.

The first time I encountered the word was in regards to Mass Effect 3 in 2012. They promised us that our choices in the first two games would radically alter the ending you experience.

We get six endings, actually three cinematic endings, since three of those cinematics are identical to others, just with a different tinting (Red, Green, Blue!).

“There are many different endings. We wouldn’t do it any other way. How could you go through all three campaigns playing as your Shepard and then be forced into a bespoke ending that everyone gets? But I can’t say any more than that…”

BESPOKE DOESN’T MEAN THE ENDING EVERYONE GETS, IT MEANS THE ENDING ONLY YOU GET, AND YOU MOTHERFUCKERS LIED ABOUT IT. Yes, I’m still salty about it seven years later. I hold grudges until they die of old age, and then I have them stuffed and mounted.

I remember seeing it pop up when I was reading one of Neal Stephenson’s novels (maybe Cryptonomicon?)about a decade and a half ago and my reaction was the same as yours. In fact, I had to look up the meaning at the time. It originally referred to custom-tailored men’s suits, and I reckon the term has been adopted so much by other makers of custom-made items that it now pops up more frequently than before.

After all, “bespoke” just sounds so much more refined and exclusive than “custom-made.”

Yeah, the boat was only like 12 miles offshore from KSC, so that likely allowed them to transmit the video directly to a line of sight shore station, and not rely on a transmitter on the barge bouncing it off a satellite

Here’s a follow-up to our discussion of teacher pay the other day. From US News & World Report via Edweek.

Teacher Salaries Fell 4.5% Over the Last Decade
The gender gap contributes to disparities in pay between teachers and similarly educated professionals.

usnews.com

“I am working hard so I can have money to pay for mortgage, insurance and all other expenses,” [Evelyn] Fabito says during a brief break on her way from one job to the next. In addition to her jobs at the elementary school and for the catering company, Fabito is a caregiver in a private home.

Already in 2019, educators have walked the picket lines, held sick-outs, marched and protested in Los Angeles, Virginia, Denver, West Virginia, Oakland, Kentucky and Sacramento - all in the last four months. The discontent on display follows a year rocked by educator unrest, in which teachers in places like Arizona, Kentucky, North Carolina, Oklahoma and West Virginia organized around the same issues of pay, class size and resources, and ultimately motivated thousands of educators to run for office in the 2018 midterm election.

There are some promising signs it’s making an impact on the profession.

The average classroom teacher salary for 2018-19 school year is projected to increase by 2.1 percent over the 2017-18 school year, from $60,477 to $61,730, according to the NEA report, in part because of the salary bumps negotiated in states and cities where educators spoke up.

“Educators don’t do this work to get rich,” [NEA President Lily] Eskelsen García said. “They do this work because they believe in students. But their pay is not commensurate with the dedication and expertise they bring to the profession.”

re: #180 teleskiguy

Ah. I got my answer anyway, by finally searching “highest scoring playoff game” without the quotes.

The Blazers did win it, but it wasn’t this game. It was the last game ever in Phoenix’s previous arena, May 11, 1992, and the score was 153-151 in “only” 2 OTs.

Nuggets have to settle for losing the highest-scoring game ever, and losing the longest playoff game in the modern era.

And I actually do actively care about the Nuggets—and pretty much, in the NBA, only the Nuggets, with a little love for Portland itself.

Guessing I’m rare in here even just as an NBA fan.

Seriously, this one had much of its action before the OTs. The Nuggets have a player who’s in the type of shape that an average person is. He had to play 65 minutes, because every time he came out, Portland started on a roll.

An at risk survivor gets another chance to qualify

Mozilla let a cert lapse/expire.
You might consider alternatives such as Waterfox, PaleMoon, Basilisk, etc —which have
xpinstall.signatures.required false by default in about:config

Short of trying a different browser, consider that making that change manually in Firefox (where that entry is true by default) should undo the de-activation of your addons, but you likely would still not be able to update addons via Mozilla’s website. If/when they get their cert issue fixed, you should probably change it back to false true.

That’s not what Mozilla said. They said they disabled all add-ons which do not comport with their new API.

I tried your suggestion. It does not work.

My favorite Darwin Award winner was the guy who was controlling a fireworks show, he tried to set off a charge, it didn’t fire so he looked into the tube to see why it didn’t shoot…you can guess the rest…

I’m partial to the winner who shoplifted a lobster. Too bad he shoved it down his pants. The store owner did not press charges as he figured the guy had been punished enough.

Elizabeth Warren is unafraid. She’s staking out the position that women are in charge of our own bodies. And she’s being attacked over it.

My response:

Oh, btw, I had tea (iced) with the woman who has, on previous Sundays of protesting, told me she loved me and that I was going to hell. I got to tell her about how CRAZY Scientology is. It helped that Scientology and its cruise ship fail boat have been in the news. It also turns out that I’m old enough to be her mother. I did get to tell her about how I was insulted by an allegedly pro-life nurse at 16, and how a next-door neighbor read me The Four Spiritual Laws (a little pamphlet by Bill Bright of Campus Crusade) mere moments after my mother was hauled off in an ambulance to have her stomach pumped after a suicide attempt. At 14, I was too shocked by what was going on with my mom to be insulted, but 45 years later, I told her that I thought taking advantage of a person’s grief and terror to push Jesus was just wrong. I hope I gave her something to think about.

You cannot reason someone out of a religious belief that a person reasoned themselves into.

There’s a reason atheists note that the best way to create atheists is to ask Christians to actually read the Bible cover-to-cover, rather than just listen to the abridged versions their pastor or priests read to them on Sunday.

If a person can get through all the incest, rape, slavery, genocide, hatred, &c in both the Old and New Testaments and says “yup, I believe this with all my heart, this is the word of God” that person needs to be opposed. That person does not deserve a place at the table of rational people.

I can tell you what they say, because last Sunday I brought up the genocides in Joshua and how everyone was killed, at least according to the Biblical account. (N.B. Which probably didn’t happen.) I was told that they all deserved to die, even the infants, even the unborn, because they were horribly wicked people that “passed their children through the fire.” (Also, for the record, they couldn’t have been passing all their children through the fire, because that’s just a euphemism for human sacrifice.) So they do have occasions where, if God tells them*, it’s perfectly OK to kill fetuses.

You can’t reason with people like that. But I’m out there to remind them that they do believe in these things and people think they’re nuts. The woman I had tea with, she actually gave me credit for sticking to my guns and continuing to come out.

*ETA: This is known as “divine command theory” or “it can’t be wrong if God tells us to do it.” Blergh.

I find it quite interesting you’re willing to go out to protest a church. At least the church you’re protesting actually owns up to what’s in the Bible and embraces it. Hypocrisy doesn’t seem to be an issue - they want to kill everyone they deem sinners just like the Bible says you’re supposed to do.

So-called liberal churches (those who whitewash the inconvenient parts of the Bible) I actually have more contempt for. They try to come up with “reasons” or simply ignore the genocidal rapey parts of their foundational text.

My ex-wife’s allegedly reasonable church’s teaching on love the sinner, hate the sin (used to bash gays and lesbians for being who they are) was why she divorced me over being possessed by demons for epilepsy.

I do not know of any church that does not believe demons are real and have some sort of control over people.

Christian pastor Steven Anderson (kill the gays) has launched a new “conference” called “Make America Straight Again” to go after “reprobates.” Atheist vlogger Suris tears apart his positions about people who do not agree with Christianity are “not people” worthy of fair treatment by society.

He will have a whole host of pastors to speak about “sodomites” (his word) to protest Gay Pride week in Orlando.

He of course says this is “God’s view” on the matter.

Amongst other things, he uses the Naturalistic Fallacy to claim “gay is not normal” and then claims “they’re paedophiles” (a common conservative position as well as Christian position).

Sorry Orlando, you will have to host this douchecanoe along with a number of other of his fellow travelers who want to tell you how sinful you are and deserve to burn in Hell.

“We hate the things God hates” is a recurring theme in Christianity.

I do not know of any church that does not believe demons are real and have some sort of control over people.

This is not the first church I’ve picketed. I picketed Mark Driscoll’s outfit in Scottsdale for the better part of a year in 2016, only giving up (and it was giving up, I was disgusted) after Trump was elected. And I picketed a church last year over their national leadership’s coverup of child sexual abuse. There are voices louder than mine (specifically Rachael Denhollander, who was the first to publicly accuse Larry Nassar of sexual abuse) going after Sovereign Grace, so it’s not so necessary at the moment.

And then there’s Scientology, but then again, they’re not a church. They’re a money-making outfit which sued the IRS into oblivion to get its tax exemption.

I believe some mainstream denominations (e.g. Episcopalians, some Methodists, some Lutherans, Disciples, etc.) would not believe in demons as disembodied spirits as you see them here. They’re all for mental health treatment and so on and they certainly aren’t holding prayer meetings and the laying on of hands to treat mental illness like so many churches do. But then again, these same people also don’t believe in the Evangelical/Calvinist penal substitutionary atonement theory. You know the one—God was so angry at us humans for being horrible horrible sinners that he had to execute his own son who was himself in order to deal with the sin problem. Of course, these guys will tell you how much God hates sin, but can’t explain, if Jesus is God in the flesh, how Jesus was able to be around all these dirty unwashed sinners for a few decades.

I don’t claim to be an orthodox Christian. I find the notion of disembodied spirits tormenting people to be preposterous, just as I find the idea of sitting down at a Scientology e-meter and trying to blow away thetans as part of auditing to be preposterous. But then again, I don’t believe the human Jesus was omniscient, etc., but a very human being.

Anderson and his pals are the same kind of Gawd-fearing Xtians who told me to my face that they were glad my son was killed in Iraq.

The Forced Birthers formed a gauntlet blocking a coworker from going into a clinic to get an abortion after her boyfriend beat her because she got pregnant. She asked coworkers to help her so I alone said I would go with her. And I won’t forget how Xtians told me I was going to hell and I will especially NEVER forget the child molesting priest who spit in my face right before we went in. Short eyes tried to provoke me to punch him. The same priest who wound up eventually killed in prison.

This is why I truly despise Xtians and I am so glad to see the latest surveys showing that young people are rejecting the Republican bullshit that these liars spread every Sunday in their brainwashing centers.

I am completely shocked. Writer Rachel Held Evans, who started out in Evangelicalism but who moved from there into the Episcopal Church (and was vilified by many of her former co-religionists) has died. She was 37.

Rachel Held Evans, an influential progressive Christian writer and speaker who cheerfully challenged American evangelical culture, died on Saturday at a hospital in Nashville. Evans, 37, entered the hospital in mid-April with the flu, and then had a severe allergic reaction to antibiotics, as she wrote on Twitter several weeks ago. According to her husband, Dan Evans, she then developed sustained seizures. Doctors put her in a medically induced coma, but some seizures returned when her medical team attempted to wean her from the medications that were maintaining her coma. Her condition worsened on Thursday morning, and her medical team discovered severe swelling of her brain. She died early on Saturday morning.

slate.com

The article/obituary, by Ruth Graham, gives a pretty good overview of Held Evans’ religious trajectory.

I am completely stunned and shocked.

Oh, no! Even I knew who she was, and I know nothing about about current religious thought. I’m afraid that some jerks on the evangelical train will sadly pronounce that she suffered the wages of sin.

I’m not going to answer a citizenship question if it’s on the 2020 census. I’m going to leave that sucker blank out of protest. And I think everyone else should, as well. It’s none of their g-d business.

I tried that once with a different question. They just come to your door.

Citizenship? I was born here in the US and so were my late parents. Does that make me deportable? ////

You know full well what I think their answer is, because I ranted about it almost two years ago—I think they intend to retroactively determine anyone who didn’t have two natural-born-citizen parents (not naturalised ones) is a naturalised citizen themselves, and that thus they can chain-strip citizenship from entire family lines, so yes, you would be.

And I really hope to be proven wrong.

Or no, wait, now I recall. “Children of already-naturalised citizens” are the only natural-born citizens, but that citizenship is only valid if the parent literally never committed even a misdemeanour—if they did, they ‘should have their citizenship stripped’ and now the child has to count as naturalised, not natural-born.

Still a way to chain-strip. And unlikely to be used on WASPS, slightly more so on white Catholics, and if someone’s brown, almost inevitable.

I do know that. I had a friend who had a follow up where they wanted to know information about his house and he went through a huge tussle with them. But I won’t answer the question, and if they do show up at my door, I’ll make a point to answer it in my underwear. My parents didn’t have that question to answer in 1970 and 1980, and I didn’t answer that question in 1990, 2000 and 2010, and I won’t answer it in 2020.

You know why I won’t answer the question? Because I remember reading about what the Nazis did with the punch card technology they bought from IBM. Yeah, they tabulated information about their undesirables in a census and then used it. Fuck that noise, I’m not going to help the government on this one.

From what I understand those in the know say that ongoing random census surveying is equal to or better than the 10 year census. But the 10 year is required by the constitution. Drumpfs gang is ill-prepared by some accounts. Might be a complete CF

I’ve always used the word ‘twee’ to describe them. A couple of their songs are bouncy in a radio-friendly kind of way, but they never seem to put any muscle behind what they do. It’s all so…moderate, or something.

I like The Killers a lot. Brandon seems to be a good guy, and they write some pretty good songs.

Can’t speak to Phoenix, since I’ve probably only heard a couple of their songs ever. Silversun strikes me as a very light version of Smashing Pumpkins, right down to the initials. :)

The Constitution mandates a census every 10 years but does not prohibit doing one more often.

If the 2020 Census is a CF and we get a Democratic president and congress anyway, run a new Census again in 2022 and get it right.

My grandmother, born in Pennsylvania, lost her American citizenship in 1918 when she married my grandfather (who was born in Budapest but not an American citizen) in NYC.
My grandmother was never granted back her citizenship, and she died in the late 1980s.
My paternal grandmother’s father left Ireland under circumstances I will not discuss right now, but went to Canada and then walked over the border to the USA, thus an ill eagle.

I’ve got lots of bases covered.

[Unpopular take: … the Kentucky Derby…]

There was a sports segment on the news today where they spoke about horse doping (without calling it that) and all the recent horse deaths at Santa Anita, and the host said, ‘Does horse racing have a kind of problem say, like the NFL and CTE?’ For some reason I thought they were going to talk about jockeys, but no. Horses, and not their heads, either.

Until about maybe 6 months ago I can’t recall ever seeing this word used anywhere but old timey texts, and never in normal every-day conversation. In the last few months I’ve seen/heard it all over the place - this is the second time today I’ve seen it here. I even talked about it to a friend (a retired professional writer) a while back and he agreed that this is not a word he has ever seen commonly used before in his lifetime.

Is it just me?

it’s been around. I was tempted about 10 years ago to get a bespoke suit from Hong Kong. It’s gotten to where you can have your measurements taken here and they’ll tailor the suit for you there, then ship it.
