My daughter applied to a bunch of graduate schools (Master of Public Health). She just got accepted to her number one choice: Yale. But that’s not even the best part. She called up the dean and asked for more scholarship $. They doubled the original offer. Another great part of the program is that since she is interested in law and health she gets to take a few courses at Yale Law School (my ex and I both joked that she is going to meet her future husband there). Anyway I’m a proud dad and things like this keep me going. Did I mention my daughter got into Yale.

When he was sent to prison… a dozen of his suits were at the tailor shop, almost finished and partially paid for.
TPM had a reader who by happy coincidence was EXACTLY THE RIGHT SIZE. He was also to buy all those suits for about 10% of their usual price. He was so very, very pleased… especially since he was of an income bracket that can usually only buy one or two suits a year at the Big & Tall Shop.

I don’t know what will happen here. Because the majority of the alumni and students are “God-fearing Christians”, and because the popular perception is that Mike Pence is a “good Christian man” (Narrator: He is not.), I doubt that will happen. Obviously, commencement is too close for plans to change, and the Vice President will speak as the administration intended. The long-term consequences may yet be significant, but we will see.

When I have seen it in old novels and such it was usually with respect to clothing, specifically men’s clothing.
For cloths, only custom suits. But guns? Almost all the classic English custom builders or Connecticut Shotguns here in the US were always called bespoke. The meaning is not so much special or custom as simply “made for someone specific”. Thus a bespoke shotgun would have a stock that had its pitch, drop, & cast all to a specific fitting.

Short of trying a different browser, consider that making that change manually in Firefox (where that entry is true by default) should undo the de-activation of your addons, but you likely would still not be able to update addons via Mozilla’s website. If/when they get their cert issue fixed, you should probably change it back to false true.

Right now the North Platte is out of its banks here. A couple years ago there was so much snow in Wyoming they opened dams there and flooded everything downstream of where I live.

I can remember two *biggest floods ever* in the Mississippi River Basin. Once when I was a kid, in 1993, and once much later, in 2011. Both started with a deep snowpack in the upper Missouri basin and then rapid melt in the spring followed by big rain events in the middle of the basins.
We’ll see this spring. It’s early yet.

I remember seeing it pop up when I was reading one of Neal Stephenson’s novels (maybe Cryptonomicon?)about a decade and a half ago and my reaction was the same as yours. In fact, I had to look up the meaning at the time. It originally referred to custom-tailored men’s suits, and I reckon the term has been adopted so much by other makers of custom-made items that it now pops up more frequently than before.
After all, “bespoke” just sounds so much more refined and exclusive than “custom-made.”

Teacher Salaries Fell 4.5% Over the Last Decade
The gender gap contributes to disparities in pay between teachers and similarly educated professionals.
“I am working hard so I can have money to pay for mortgage, insurance and all other expenses,” [Evelyn] Fabito says during a brief break on her way from one job to the next. In addition to her jobs at the elementary school and for the catering company, Fabito is a caregiver in a private home.
Already in 2019, educators have walked the picket lines, held sick-outs, marched and protested in Los Angeles, Virginia, Denver, West Virginia, Oakland, Kentucky and Sacramento - all in the last four months. The discontent on display follows a year rocked by educator unrest, in which teachers in places like Arizona, Kentucky, North Carolina, Oklahoma and West Virginia organized around the same issues of pay, class size and resources, and ultimately motivated thousands of educators to run for office in the 2018 midterm election.
There are some promising signs it’s making an impact on the profession.
The average classroom teacher salary for 2018-19 school year is projected to increase by 2.1 percent over the 2017-18 school year, from $60,477 to $61,730, according to the NEA report, in part because of the salary bumps negotiated in states and cities where educators spoke up.
“Educators don’t do this work to get rich,” [NEA President Lily] Eskelsen García said. “They do this work because they believe in students. But their pay is not commensurate with the dedication and expertise they bring to the profession.”

So they do have occasions where, if God tells them*, it’s perfectly OK to kill fetuses.
You can’t reason with people like that. But I’m out there to remind them that they do believe in these things and people think they’re nuts. The woman I had tea with, she actually gave me credit for sticking to my guns and continuing to come out.

I can tell you what they say, because last Sunday I brought up the genocides in Joshua and how everyone was killed, at least according to the Biblical account. (N.B. Which probably didn’t happen.) I find it quite interesting you’re willing to go out to protest a church. At least the church you’re protesting actually owns up to what’s in the Bible and embraces it. Hypocrisy doesn’t seem to be an issue - they want to kill everyone they deem sinners just like the Bible says you’re supposed to do.
So-called liberal churches (those who whitewash the inconvenient parts of the Bible) I actually have more contempt for. They try to come up with “reasons” or simply ignore the genocidal rapey parts of their foundational text.
My ex-wife’s allegedly reasonable church’s teaching on love the sinner, hate the sin (used to bash gays and lesbians for being who they are) was why she divorced me over being possessed by demons for epilepsy.
I do not know of any church that does not believe demons are real and have some sort of control over people.
This is not the first church I’ve picketed. I picketed Mark Driscoll’s outfit in Scottsdale for the better part of a year in 2016, only giving up (and it was giving up, I was disgusted) after Trump was elected. And I picketed a church last year over their national leadership’s coverup of child sexual abuse. There are voices louder than mine (specifically Rachael Denhollander, who was the first to publicly accuse Larry Nassar of sexual abuse) going after Sovereign Grace, so it’s not so necessary at the moment.
And then there’s Scientology, but then again, they’re not a church. They’re a money-making outfit which sued the IRS into oblivion to get its tax exemption.
I believe some mainstream denominations (e.g. Episcopalians, some Methodists, some Lutherans, Disciples, etc.) would not believe in demons as disembodied spirits as you see them here. They’re all for mental health treatment and so on and they certainly aren’t holding prayer meetings and the laying on of hands to treat mental illness like so many churches do. But then again, these same people also don’t believe in the Evangelical/Calvinist penal substitutionary atonement theory. You know the one—God was so angry at us humans for being horrible horrible sinners that he had to execute his own son who was himself in order to deal with the sin problem. Of course, these guys will tell you how much God hates sin, but can’t explain, if Jesus is God in the flesh, how Jesus was able to be around all these dirty unwashed sinners for a few decades.
I don’t claim to be an orthodox Christian. I find the notion of disembodied spirits tormenting people to be preposterous, just as I find the idea of sitting down at a Scientology e-meter and trying to blow away thetans as part of auditing to be preposterous. But then again, I don’t believe the human Jesus was omniscient, etc., but a very human being.

I am completely shocked. Writer Rachel Held Evans, who started out in Evangelicalism but who moved from there into the Episcopal Church (and was vilified by many of her former co-religionists) has died. She was 37.
Rachel Held Evans, an influential progressive Christian writer and speaker who cheerfully challenged American evangelical culture, died on Saturday at a hospital in Nashville. Evans, 37, entered the hospital in mid-April with the flu, and then had a severe allergic reaction to antibiotics, as she wrote on Twitter several weeks ago. According to her husband, Dan Evans, she then developed sustained seizures. Doctors put her in a medically induced coma, but some seizures returned when her medical team attempted to wean her from the medications that were maintaining her coma. Her condition worsened on Thursday morning, and her medical team discovered severe swelling of her brain. She died early on Saturday morning.

Still a way to chain-strip. And unlikely to be used on WASPS, slightly more so on white Catholics, and if someone’s brown, almost inevitable.

I’ve always used the word ‘twee’ to describe them. A couple of their songs are bouncy in a radio-friendly kind of way, but they never seem to put any muscle behind what they do. It’s all so…moderate, or something.

I like The Killers a lot. Brandon seems to be a good guy, and they write some pretty good songs.
Can’t speak to Phoenix, since I’ve probably only heard a couple of their songs ever. Silversun strikes me as a very light version of Smashing Pumpkins, right down to the initials. :)

If the 2020 Census is a CF and we get a Democratic president and congress anyway, run a new Census again in 2022 and get it right.
