Honestly, I would not be surprised at this point if the GOP response to Trump refusing to accept the electoral results and threatening to stay in office was the same as every other thing he’s done: A lot of furrowed brows and mutterings of “concern” while they figure out just how to explain a new dictator as a “good thing.”

Like joining the military or testifying in court, I’m pretty sure Secret Service *takes an oath* and part of that oath is to protect the president* at all costs. Dropping the president* out of a window would violate that oath.

He will leave office when his term is up. He’s a coward. But before he goes he will issue a lot of pardons (everyone gets one). If he thinks it will help he will resign early and let pence pardon him. He will fight it in court for the rest of his life. (there is no such device as a blanket pardon). I repeat he is a coward, and cowards always back down. He has earned no loyalty.

I will not miss him when he dies.

Prager U keeps on supporting the EC and claims that the Founding Fathers created a brilliant mechanism that must remain in effect for eternity( or until it elects a Democrat who received fewer votes, whichever comes first). I once exchanged some non-confrontational FB posts with Tara Ross, the woman at Prager behind the “EC forever” movement. I think it’s worth noting that when the will of the people was that the House should be Democratic, power transitioned without any real incident.

Some norms still hold, and minority power is not absolute. I don’t think even the loopiest of “serious” voices on the right tried to float the idea of simply refusing to cede the gavel to Nancy. And even with all the damage she and her committees are doing to them, you don’t really hear anyone claiming she’s not legitimately Speaker.

I think even Donald’s reptile brain understands that’s still a bridge too far.

Can Eric Prince’s troops defeat the Secret Service and/or DCPD?

There is a slight, but real, danger that a kind of Trump super-militia could coalesce around armed church groups, Prince mercenaries, and rogue law enforcement. They could not prevent the inauguration of a new President but there are quite a few cities and suburbs where they could effectively take control, at least temporarily. They would do so in the belief that the libs are helpless, unarmed snowflakes who will concede in the face of real violence and that the military will either rally to Trump or refuse to intervene. As Charles and others have documented, many of them really believe it can and will come to this. Any such uprising would be snuffed out pretty quickly but it might be very bad for a few days, depending on where you live.

Although I have my doubts about coalescence — they all want to be the boss. It might look more like several mass shootings than an uprising. It could still get pretty nasty locally, of course.

Leadership and discipline wouldn’t be their strong suit to be sure but they might find enough to do a lot of damage for a few days. Prince or someone like him could be a kind of national generalissimo, with loose guidance handed down through the internet and Faux news. Local RWNJ media could also take such a role. The church groups already have a kind of hierarchy, both the formal one of pastors and deacons and the real one based on social status. This could provide some kind of slipshod organization, as could the NRA, tea bagger groups, and even (imho) certain MLM networks. The basic cowardice of the armed nuts would actually be helpful to this, since they are inclined to defer to power and can take action only en masse.

This scenario is very unlikely. Despite all the rants on the Internet, if there is any political violence, it is more likely to be on the order of the Hodgkinson shooting — a couple individuals will go off the deep end at a GOP defeat, but there will be no organized rebellion.

I hope you’re right but I live in a deep-red state where constitutional sheriffs and gun-waving preachers are commonplace and batshit Kremlin-sponsored conspiracy claims are mainstream belief. The loose framework for such an outbreak already exists. I think there is a kind of critical mass for wingnut violence, with the level increasing exponentially once that mass is reached.

We should probably also remember they are a comedy show.

Except it is comedy shows that do a far superior job in unmasking the evils of an administration to the general public. The press that was so focused on Hillary’s e-mails has not repaired their reputation in their dealing with the Trump crime family. If our comedy shows don’t reveal his evil, much of the population will reduce everything to standard red vs blue disputes rather than recognizing the depth of the damage the GOP is inflicting on our nation.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand was Houston today at the invitation of the Harris County Democratic Party to give a speech and answer questions. Light turnout as it was a nice day, the Cinquo De Mayo parade and possibly a reaction to last nights Flash Flood warning.

The HCDP intends to invite at least 12 more candidates to speak. I did take some photos and put them up on my flickr site. You can go to flickr and search for the HCDP tag and for Kirsten Gillbrand.

I agree that the currently organized and uniformed nut militias like oaf-keepers are not a great threat. They have a legal, corporate existence with recognized leaders. Those leaders would decide pretty quickly that there was no money in actual violence and either slink away or seize the opportunity to recruit more dues-paying members.
Individual members could join a pogrom, just as some rallied to the Bundys, but they are not the organizations I fear.

I hope there is someone around to search what he takes with him. I have little doubt that he will (or has already) get/got confused about what belongs to him & what belongs to the people of America from within the White House.

Jerk Landlady Refused To Rent To Muslim Tenants, Now Owes Them $675K (Goes to Wonkette)

A landlady in Denver refused to allow a renter to sublet (allowed in the lease) to a Muslim business owner in Boulder who wanted to expand his business.

She stated her renter needed to find “an American person … good like you and me.”

The renter was horrified by the exchange and called her back (recording her responses).

The landlady did not try to deny anything in court when she was sued by the Boulder businessman.

in the end the electors will vote
congress will certify (yes they will because it’s only the electors vote they are certifying and that’s transparent)

- and john roberts will administer the oath
there is then a new president. the rest of this is nonsense

- won’t leave the white house?
sure - he may sit in the oval and not attend the inaugural - boor that he is

whether he does or not, at 12:00 noon the white house ushers and movers will start packing and removing everything, except maybe the chair he’s sitting in

- yes, he will still have secret service protection
no, he’s not the president any more

And Good Morning To You, Too, Trump (Goes to Juanita Jean’s, the World’s Most Dangerous Beauty Salon):

You do not have free speech in my house. People own these platforms and they have the right to regulate them.

Here’s the part I don’t understand. The right wingers claim that Fox news is wildly popular. Why don’t Alex Jones, Milo Yiannopoulos, Laura Loomer, white nationalist Paul Nehlen and Infowars contributor Paul Joseph Watson just head on over to the highly popular Fox News chatroom and spend the day there?

Conservatives are not being banned from social media. Lunatics trying to incite violence are.

So, here’s the deal. If Fox allows it, that’s fine. But Fox won’t because Fox knows they will be held liable when one of these creeps incites someone to do something unthinkable.

re: #173 Joe Bacon 🌹

The lesson I learned is that I keep my mouth shut because too many times brainwashed assholes who go to church every Sunday said they were glad my son died for Jesus.

That’s why I threw the prize in the trash and want nothing to do with it while his mother flaunts it at church every time she can.

I’m so sorry you have to put up with that. I can’t imagine religious belief anyway, but the idea that your son fell in combat to the glory of God? That’s downright mediæval thinking. There is nothing glorious about warfare. Your son was doing what he had to do, what he was assigned to do, and cannot return to you. My deepest sympathies on your loss and a rusted unsharpened cactus in the piehole of anyone who tries to hijack that for their religious or political ideology.

The amazing thing as I watched Mr. Wright’s Twitter thread unfold is all the people who told him “you should change your hair” or “you should change your bearing” or “you should wear different clothes.”

Every last one of those was a woman. All of them. You’d think women would understand what those phrases mean, since women have to put up with it all the time.

And yeah, none of that works. My bearing is still standing straight, taking marching length steps. I dress like everyone else and my hair is past my shoulders and I still get “thankyewferyerservice” from people I know around here every time I meet them.

Those in my direct family who are still alive (my mother, my sister, and me) all were in the military. We all just want to get on with our lives, just like Mr. Wright trying to buy a sprinkler head.

As he notes, it’s not about your service anyway. It’s about the other person feeling good about weighing in on your service (whether you want them to or not). And if you don’t perform the way they want you to, then they become angry with you. Your not vetering right.

I appreciate the sentiment when someone thanks me for my service; my usual response is “thank you for letting me serve.” I would appreciate more if those same people held politicians to delivering on the promises made to us when we enlisted or were commissioned.

Guy comes into her bar with an arsenal, she can’t do anything about that, and demands to be served alcohol when he’s drunk? No dram shop law is going to protect her life. The cops wouldn’t do anything (because Texas open-carry).

I hope she has a lawyer who can show the absurdity of this charge in court (or get the DA to throw it out).

Max Boot is not happy.

So for the next 18 months, at a minimum, this nation is at the mercy of a criminal administration. I am in despair as I have never been before about the future of our experiment in self-rule. Before Mueller filed his report, it was possible to imagine the president being brought to justice. That fantasy is no longer tenable. Instead we are left with the dismaying likelihood that the president will now feel emboldened to commit ever greater transgressions to hold onto power — and thus delay a possible post-presidential indictment.

I’ve been working my part time job at a major video get retail chain lately. I apologized to my co worker as I walked off the floor because a customer made me angry.
He used to be a regular customer, but is not around as much as his job has moved across the village I live in.
He came in and started spouting about how much he hates star wars now that, due to the last Jedi, he sold all his Black Series figures because the last Jedi “sucked”
He then went on to state that the movie captain marvel was no good because ” Brie Larsen has no ass” and then went on a rant about it. I looked at my co-worker and said fuck this and walked to the back room. I came back out and apologized.
My coworker used to work in a restaurant with this customer and said he has always been like that and the coworker told the customer that I left because I was probably going to kick him out.

Just baffling.

The whole thing is screwed up, but she wasn’t threatened. She did however know something bad was likely to happen, because she called her bosses (and later 911).

She knew the guy, and his estranged wife, who was one of the victims.
