My son read Moby Dick a few years ago and enjoyed it, though I understand it has rather more information about whaling than is strictly necessary.

I’m no good at picking “greatest novels” or whatever, but I did read Uncle Tom’s Cabin and recommend it, if you can stand the Victorian verbiage and sentiments. It was not at all the book I thought it was.
(Spoiler: Uncle Tom is a Christ-like figure not a race traitor.)

I have no intention of ever reading it; there are some topics that I find too distressing and hunting whales is one of them.

Arguing with true believers re: democracy vs. republic is as futile as arguing with creationists or flat-earthers. I note that D’Angelo is going on about Natural Rights, etc., which is not far removed from the nutjobs who only accept sheriffs as officers of the law.

Every time they deny the requests is another round of talking points for Democrats, with “if the report exonerates Trump, why are they working so hard to hide it?”

Given Georgia’s new law subjecting women who terminate their pregnancy to prison time, I’m re-upping my @villagevoice piece about how, when Trump suggested something similar in 2016, conservatives insisted they would never, ever do anything like that.

Georgia only did this because Kemp disenfranchised hundreds of thousands of voters. If you can silence your opponents, you control the agenda. And that is the approach of the modern Republicans: denying Constitutional rights to any who may not support them.

Reminds me of the time I talked to Rodney Dangerfield on the phone and he wouldn’t stop telling jokes.

“I tell you nobody likes me. When I was a kid nobody played with me…so I played with myself…”

“I walked down the street and saw a bar with a sign ‘topless and bottomless’. I walked in and nobody was there…”

“I dialed suicide prevention…they put me on hold…”

“I went into a KFC…the guy in front of me ordered a Big Mac…and the clerk asked if he wanted fries with that…”

“I went fishing and the worms wouldn’t let me put them on the hook…”

“I went to the plastic surgeon…they told me to go to a veterinarian…”

“I went to a strip club…and folks threw money at me to keep my clothes on…”

My supervisor listened in on the call and almost died laughing…

Capitalism, as practiced in America, must be reined in; it is an unsuitable approach to managing much of modern society, especially health care and education.

A tale of two ways a story is reported:
Lawsuit Filed Over Bible Display at New Hampshire VA Hospital; Uproar Ensues (goes to Air Force Times)
Atheist Group Sues Over Bible Display at VA Hospital in New Hampshire (Goes to FOX News Channel)

Said “atheist group” in the FOX title is the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (which has Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, atheists, &c).

The Bible in question is part of a so-called Missing Man table, which contains objects meant to represent significance to military personnel. That includes a Bible, but Bibles are normally omitted from official government displays.

This particular Bible was donated; it was the personal Bible of a WW2 vet.

Of the fifteen people who protested to the VA, ten are Christians (the FOX article fails to mention that).

The VA originally removed it, then the director had it replaced, with an acrylic box bolting it to the table (there was never a threat of theft or damage of the book).

The Air Force Times article tries to put all the viewpoints surrounding the Missing Man table in their article.

The FOX article shapes it only from one position (Christian persecution by atheists and political correctness). The comments section would run me out of the country if they could, and a number of people there openly state they don’t care about veterans of other faiths or none who served in the military.

Anymouse 🌹  May 8, 2019 • 11:37:45pm

re: #51 Anymouse 🌹

On the issue of the donated Bible, had the VA done something like put it up in a personal display (this Bible was carried by Army Air Corps person X while a POW), that would not be a violation of the Establishment Clause.

The Missing Man table represents everyone (active duty and civilian) who was a POW, MIA, or lost in combat. As such, that becomes an Establishment Clause violation (the Bible doesn’t represent everyone in government service).

The ten Christians in the suit are being dragged in the FOX comments as “no true Christians” because they are standing up for the Constitution they swore an oath to defend (presumably to God), not for proselytisation by the VA hospital director.
