Holocaust Denier Chuck C. Johnson Met With Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross

Politics • Views: 29,042

Alexander Nazaryan has a piece at Yahoo News about the latest doings by horrible racist troll Chuck C. Johnson (who is NOT ME), including some new information — he tried to meet with Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross last year as his various scam businesses were falling apart and he was losing one lawsuit after another.

And Ross didn’t shut him down; in fact, he encouraged the white supremacist to schedule a time for the meeting with a senior adviser.

“Hi Secretary Ross,” the markedly informal email sent by Johnson that day begins. “Great chatting with you the other day.” Johnson proceeds to say that he would be “speaking before about 30 congressmen on tech issues” in Washington and “would love to meet” with Ross as well.

Ross responded about three hours later, in an email apparently typed from his iPhone. He explained that he had to fly to Wisconsin in order to attend the groundbreaking for a plant opened by Foxconn, the Chinese electronics manufacturer. He urged Johnson to schedule a time for them to meet with Macie Leach, a senior adviser to the commerce secretary.

Ross’s spokesperson says the meeting never took place, for what that’s worth.

As for a face-to-face between Johnson and the former corporate raider, it was not to be. “The requested meeting did not occur,” said Commerce spokesperson Rebecca Glover. She declined to elaborate, or to answer specific questions about the matter.

[…]

What, exactly, Johnson and Ross were planning to meet about remains unknown. In a text-message exchange with Yahoo News, Johnson expressed concern that he would be “falsely” accused “of being a troll or worse,” which made him hesitant to “engage with the #fakenews.” Of his exchange with Ross, Johnson would only say it was “a national security matter.”

“A national security matter.” It is to laugh.

There’s more to this story, though, because Johnson didn’t contact Ross with an official government email address — he apparently used a private non-governmental address. And that strongly suggests there’s more here than meets the eye.

“It’s concerning that a reputed Holocaust denier is familiar enough with Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross that he can apparently reach the Secretary via a private email account,” said Charisma Troiano, communications director for Democracy Forward, a progressive group that obtained Ross’s emails through the Freedom of Information Act. “The public deserves to know why.”

Ross’s email address is redacted in the documents reviewed by Yahoo News. However, Democracy Forward had specified in its Freedom of Information request that it sought “all communications sent to or from any nongovernmental email address established, controlled, or used by the Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross.” The back-and-forth with Johnson, therefore, had to have been conducted at least in part via an email address affiliated with Ross but not issued by the federal government.

But in other news, it looks like Johnson may have slimed his way back onto Twitter again, although he’s denying it, of course.

The exchange with Ross came several days after a California superior court rejected Johnson’s bid to have his Twitter ban lifted. (Johnson may have found a way around the ban; shortly after an exchange with Johnson, this reporter was followed on Twitter by @charles46532569, an account purporting to belong to “charles johnson.” The account followed, and shared messages from, accounts associated with several right-wing figures. Johnson denied to Yahoo News that the account was his, replying with an emoji of a sunglasses-wearing visage.)

Hey Mr. Mowing, you dumb asshole!

I’m 37. I live pain free day to day. I take no regular prescription medications. See a doctor maybe four times a year. I watch my weight and exercise four times a week.

But I have a heart murmur that I was FUCKING BORN WITH, that most insurance considers a Pre-existing condition.

Fuck you, you heartless POS.

Biden really wants to portray this narrative that Republicans in Congress are just hoodwinked by Trumpism and once Trump is gone they’ll magically start being reasonable partners in democracy. I can’t express how naive and insulting I find that and it’s upsetting because Biden who was Obama’s VP should know better than that. Joe, you’re going to be the subject of many books and articles by right wingers everywhere insisting that you’re a Marxist who hates the Baby Jesus and wants to turn our children into gay transgendered Muslims. I don’t need you to hate Republicans but I do need you to be aware that they’re not our buddies.

it’s asinine
no one has a pre-existing condition until they get ‘sick’ the first time
(and no i dont mean a cold or the flu)
‘clean living’ dont keep the doctor away

here’s a thought - what if your ‘pre-existing condition’ was in fact caused by someone else - ie their negligence, carelessness, etc?

further, insurance companies have used things like unreported acne treatments from 20+ years ago as a preexisting condition and therefore a reason to void a policy (cant find a cite right now)

That’s not going to help him win the fucking election if he thinks he’s going to peel off the disaffected GOP vote, and it’s sure as hell going to piss off a lot of the folks who have seen the writing on the wall and see no actual participation from the GOP outside of pissing on our boots every time we walk by.

Trump doesn’t care/remember beyond what he says. He’s got the attention span of a gnat, and that’s being awful kind. Trump will even go back on what he says mid-sentence.

He is the problem. Trying to explain that trade wars are bad, harm the farmers, etc., are useless when you still back him regardless of the consequences.

This GOP refuses to stand up to a corrupt Trump, so why would they stop him on economic issues? They wont.

The only time the GOP will take notice is when they lose in the elections - and suffer catastrophic defeats (which the GOP will turn around and claim is the result of Russian interference, ignoring the 2016 elections, when there’s proof of interference).

Replying to @bradheath
President Trump’s lawyers told a judge today that Congress didn’t have the power to investigate him for corruption, and suggested that both the Whitewater and Watergate investigations were invalid attempts at “law enforcement.” usatoday.com

here’s how you nip this in the ‘butt’

congress has the power to impeach
congress has the oversight power to ‘investigate’ in order to
- substantiate the articles of impeachment
- gather evidence to be used in the impeachment trial

whatever gerald ford said, high crimes and misdemeanors are far more than just misuses of the office. they include transgressions of the law.

best current example: the mueller investigation / report
- managed under the DOJ / AG
- then only partially given to congress
so how does congress determine whether impeachment is warranted if it can’t
- investigate on it’s own
- nor receive the full file
- nor do it’s own follow up

I would have immediately felt compelled to ask this goober how impeachment is supposed to work if Congress cannot engage in “law enforcement” and standing DOJ policy is that no sitting president may be indicted. Or who is supposed to investigate corrupt actions by the president if he orders his AG to put the kibosh on all investigations into his actions.

This is perfectly complete immunity for the President.

The DoJ has ruled that the President cannot be indicted, even for criminal acts conducted as President, while he’s still in office. It’s up to Congress to investigate, impeach, and try if appropriate.

Now the President’s lawyers are arguing that Congress has no authority to investigate the President for criminal activity.

So, if the DoJ can’t indict, and can’t turn over its investigative evidence to Congress, and the Congress can’t investigate on its own, the President can neither be indicted while in office nor impeached to be removed from office.

Pretty damn sure there’s no scintilla of this immunity in the Constitution.

this pretzel logic of theirs is mindnumbingly convoluted

- SCOTUS has generally ruled to enforce a subpoena issued by the House or the Senate in furtherance of a particular power granted to Congress in the Constitution. Well,
- generally, that has tended to be the legislative power
- congress also has the power to impeach and remove from office

Biden really wants to portray this narrative that Republicans in Congress are just hoodwinked by Trumpism and once Trump is gone they’ll magically start being reasonable partners in democracy. I can’t express how naive and insulting I find that and it’s upsetting because Biden who was Obama’s VP should know better than that. London (CNN Business)The outlook for Germany’s Bayer looks increasingly grim as court damages tied to the weedkiller Roundup begin to pile up.

A jury in California on Monday awarded more than $2 billion to a couple who claimed that the product caused their cancer. Bayer (BAYRY), the inventor of aspirin, bought Roundup maker Monsanto just last year.

The largest Roundup-related damages award so far underscores the massive legal bill Bayer could owe in the United States, where the company faces lawsuits from roughly 13,400 plaintiffs.

That exposure recently sparked a shareholder revolt against the management of the drug and chemicals giant.

Investors have cause to be upset. Bayer shares fell more than 2% Tuesday, and have dropped more than 45% in the past year.

The company has vowed to fight back, though the path forward appears difficult.

It said in a statement Monday that it was “disappointed with the jury’s decision” and would appeal the verdict.

From downstairs — additional thoughts on this scene from “Chernobyl”

re: #254 HappyWarrior

The Belorussian official. His smug reaction when she reminds him that she’s a scientist and he was working in a shoe factory. You need a government that runs on merit. To me, I’m seeing the story as the fallacy of what happens when you only have your ideology to guide you and this case it was Soviet Communism but it could just as easily been Capitalism.

After the nuclear physicist warns him of the dangers of Chernobyl, the Byelorussian official tells her that he’s been assured that everything is under control: “I prefer my opinion to yours” and, in response to her comparison of their credentials: “I worked in a shoe factory and now I’m in charge”.

He seems to be a perfect model of a Trump voter, Faux News adherent, and climate change denier. Expertise is devalued — the opinions of uneducated persons in power are accorded more respect than the educated analysis of those with knowledge. It is identical to our news media segments which present a debate between professors with a background in a field and some Gish Galloping lobbyist.

Now it is also true that she could have been more diplomatic when she pointed out his deficiencies — after all, the Trump voters hold grudges against those who they think hold them in contempt and it’s often not the best strategy to offend someone whose assistance you need. But the point she made was certainly true. And we are now being ruled here by an arrogant administration who refuses to listen to anyone who doesn’t share their dishonest perspective.

Or maybe Twitter is run by fellow travelers.

The RWNJs and Muslims…I swear it’s like complaining about all the shit that’s burning while continually throwing gasoline on the fire.

As John Cole from Balloon Juice once opined, the only difference between our Christian Fundamentalists and the Whahabi sect of Islam is one uses a cross and the other a Crescent moon.

To me, the parallels is that the Shia are akin to a very militant form of Catholicism, and the Sunni’s are like our Protestant Fundamentalists.

At the same time, if one was to read the Qu’ran, you would see many references to “The People of the Book” (i.e. Bible).

“…Earlier [in October 2016], the group of computer scientists passed the logs to Paul Vixie. In the world of DNS experts, there’s no higher authority. Vixie wrote central strands of the DNS code that makes the internet work. After studying the logs, he concluded, “The parties were communicating in a secretive fashion. The operative word is secretive. This is more akin to what criminal syndicates do if they are putting together a project.” Put differently, the logs suggested that Trump and Alfa had configured something like a digital hotline connecting the two entities, shutting out the rest of the world, and designed to obscure its own existence. Over the summer, the scientists observed the communications trail from a distance.”

“…Once more, for emphasis before we move on: Franklin Foer had “Trump organization server + Alfa Bank + Spectrum Health,” while Chris Steele had “Manafort + Alfa Bank,” independent of each other, and that’s quite frankly kinda stunning. Foer’s sources said the interactions were designed so as to be concealed. Steele said Manafort and Alfa were using TOR software and a hidden server. It sure does appear to be the same story, from two different directions, with two completely different lines of sourcing.”

Maybe: but since a war (or even the serious threat of one) will boost oil prices, which will further enrich his BFFs in Saudi Arabia, I’m not sure he much cares (even if one assumes Trump HAS even thought things out this far: a dubious proposition IMO).

Not very. Courts have created a lot of rules to slow down claims of incitement. It’s actually fairly hard to prove in most cases. Under Brandenburg v Ohio you have to prove intent, imminence, and likelihood.

Were you close to the tourist planes crashing?

No. The float plane collision was about 10 miles north of Ketchikan, about 200 miles south of Juneau. This is the third or fourth float plane accident in the past 4 years involving float plane tour operators operating out of Ketchikan. I believe there have been in the neighborhood of 20 - 25 fatalities in total.

There has been development of an excellent system, Capstone, to prevent this sort of accident. It combines FAA aircraft location radio signals with GPS mapping to display the location of any other aircraft and the terrain in the vicinity of your aircraft. The display is on an I Pod type screen mounted in the aircraft.

I’ve seen a couple of accident reports where tour pilots have turned the system off in good weather because, with all the tourist flights operating at the same time in the same general areas, the warning alarms kept sounding. This made the tourists very nervous

Ours get paid per hour when they have to be in duty. We don’t have fires too often, but they rotate through manning our fire stations.

But no tips?

some hugs from time to time.

and once, a HUGE bouquet of thank you flowers after we got back to the station following a fire at a horse farm…we saved all the horses and most of the barns.

it’s really REALLY nasty trying to put out horseshit fires.

re: #255 Ace Rothstein

So last night at dinner with the Trump-supporting side of the fam, I learned several things.

1. Property taxes are slavery. If you own property and pay property taxes, you are not free.
2. Things were better in the 1800’s when everyone had to fend for themselves.
3. It would be better if we had volunteer fire departments (so we wouldn’t have to pay taxes, of course).
4. You can not be a moral person without God (which God wasn’t specified) in your life. This one got a rise out of me, as I’m atheist and consider myself a “moral person.”
5. When your fence fell down, people would come by and put it back up for you. This again was another swipe at city services.
6. But the best one was my stepfather (who was wearing a polo shirt with the Constitution splattered all over it, and was wearing a USA hat made in China) said “Without this (the Constitution) we are done as nation (he’s never read it, by the way).”

P.S. Also, liberals have mental disorders.

Tell that to my neighbor, who didn’t do a damned thing about his fence for years until he got a letter from the city about it. The fence was shoddy, portions of it were rotten, and my family had spent years off and on putting it back into place only for the next strong gust of wind to bring it back down. But soon as the city gets on his ass, suddenly that old fence is gone and a brand new one popped up in its place over the span of a weekend.

Holland was a wild Irishman. He started as a Christian Brother math teacher, but medicaled out. After the US government turned down his sub designs, he was funded (sometimes) by the Fenians, who are thus the godfathers of the modern submarine.

The USN eventually backed him, though: bought a sub from him, and eventually commissioned it as USS Holland (the Navy’s first submarine).
And I guess his Irish nationalism didn’t stop him from selling another model to the British: their first sub was HMS Holland (1902).

My perennial reply to this is that there if you only act “moral” out of fear of punishment or desire for a reward, you’re no more moral than a toddler, or a slightly trained animal.

It is said that your true ethics are how you behave when nobody’s watching. But if you believe in an omnipresent god, there’s NEVER ‘nobody watching’, is there?

I have a suspicion that the next time Democrats control the senate with any majority, and they have a president willing to go along, they’ll simply dissolve all the federal circuit courts and replace judges with their own picks. I know that would not ultimately be a good thing, but I doubt that Democrats are going to tolerate being locked into a generational battle with a conservative court that got installed thanks to assistance from a foreign power.

Better question for them: What if I’m granted absolution before I die? If the only thing preventing me from being an amoral psychopath is the supposed fear of eternal damnation, then what if I find a priest willing to grant me absolution on my death bed? I rape, murder, and pillage for years…but find forgiveness before I croak. Am I still supposed to face an eternity of punishment if God’s Earthly middle man says the slate’s been wiped clean?

I dunno, though, because I don’t think most Protestants see their ministers as the one who grants absolution. That’s between the penitent and the Almighty, where there could be no subterfuge.

I’ve heard there was some belief in the early Catholic Church along those lines. Put off baptism until just before you die, because it is your one-time-only Get Out of Jail Free card. Sure there’s penance and forgiveness for members of the Church, but it’s not quite as sure a thing. Or something. Of course, if you misjudged when you were baptized, well, tough luck.

All this talk of forgiveness and absolution reminds me of “O Brother, Where Art Thou.”

Pete: The preacher said he absolved us.

Everett: For him. Not for the law. I’m surprised at you Pete. I gave you credit for more brains than Delmar.

Delmar: But there was witnesses that seen us redeemed.

Everett: That’s not the issue Delmar. Even if it did put you square with the Lord, the state of Mississippi’s a little more hardnosed.

Define “mess further with us,” Lou. I’ll save you time: You can’t, because this isn’t about Iran “messing” with us. It’s about an administration so backed into a corner, it is hurriedly trying to provoke an international confrontation in order to turn the nation’s attention. The added “bonus” of being a “wartime president” is certainly not far from Trump’s mind, the idea that he can’t be voted out of office because it would disrupt the “war effort” having heavy appeal when you’ve got little else to run on.
