“I think Alabama has gone too far,” he said during a Wednesday appearance on “The 700 Club”, referencing the bill’s 99-year maximum sentence for doctors who perform abortions and the fact that it does not provide exceptions for rape or incest cases.

He added that he does not think the bill would be upheld by the Supreme Court.

“It’s an extreme law, and they want to challenge Roe vs. Wade, but my humble view is that this is not the case we want to bring to the Supreme Court because I think this one will lose,” he said.

This is a great reminder that all elections matter. My delegate is one of the most extremely right wing members of the VA state legislature. Our candidate isn’t running on a super liberal platform but she is a supporter of choice, reasonable gun laws, the LGBT community, expanding broadband internet access (we’re fairly rural here), and making the opoid crisis be handled humanely. I’m going to be sick if purity politics sinks us against Trump and beyond.

It is funny about genetics and things like weather. My brother’s been looking at the part of Slovakia where our grandmother’s parents came from. My brother is a huge mountains guy. He loves winter sports and all that. He said he felt a special connection there just looking at the photos. We also on the Irish side come from a family- the O’Malley clan that were seafarers and I’ve always loved the ocean. Now I will admit that most of our love comes from our experiences but there is something to be said about this I think since our ancestors did live certain places for generations before they emigrated.

Salt Lake County Attorney Sim Gill (D) declared that he would not enforce a Utah measure banning abortions after 18 weeks.

Gill, who oversees the county containing the Beehive State’s only two abortion clinics, said the prohibition was unconstitutional as a slew of states pass restrictions on the procedure.

The law, which was signed by Gov. Gary Herbert (R) in March, is currently being challenged in court.

“In our participatory democracy the Legislature is certainly free to pass legislation indicating what the law should be, the duty of a public prosecutor is to enforce the law as it currently stands,” Gill said in a statement Monday. “Residents of Salt Lake County deserve, and rightfully expect, that their fundamental rights will not be compromised by governmental bodies, whether by threat of criminal sanction or otherwise.

“Unless and until the United States Supreme Court weighs in with a contrary view of the scope of constitutional protection afforded to women, the DA’s Office will not enforce a law that is unconstitutional under existing precedent.”

Hello from Japan, which is fantastic. The food-last night we had wagyu beef in a shabu shabu at the ryokan in Karatsu. Wagyu is so tender. Now we’re on a bus to Onta, a tiny village part of Hita town. The village is devoted to a particular style of pottery and they prepare the clay using water hammers. I am having a great time!

The last episode of the original show was not only filmed in my neighborhood joint, the Reade Street Pub, but in the background you can vaguely see the bartender played by the late and lamented local legend Mike Hickey, a born and bred Limerickian, perhaps most famous for 86-ing Frank McCourt for being too grab-assy with the ladies. Mike, who grew up with the McCourts in the Old Sod, was a true gentleman.

Anywho, I had the pleasure of witnessing Jerry Orbach’s billiard playing skills at the Raccoon Lodge (R.I.P.) on several occasions, and he was truly awesome on the felt. Everyone said Chris Noth was a nice guy, but as a short guy meself I tend to avoid giants.

Let’s be honest, what we have right now is a 5-4 majority that would be willing to not only let these two outrageous laws stand, but put an axe through RvW’s head with two words: “States rights.” Argue that the “settled law” was a mistake, that the Burger Court was wrong to “create” a right to abortion when it really should be a “state matter,” and instead put some extremely loose “rule” in place that relies upon subjective rather than objective reasoning (ex: “reasonable access”).

There’s an argument from the other end that if a right is not one spelled out in the Constitution, then it effectively doesn’t exist or only exists within whatever framework established by the government. That that right may be restricted or banned in whatever way the government in power allows.

I mean, I’m just putting out there the most likely argument, which is “states rights.” For all we know, the Roberts Court could lose their damned minds and hand down a “personhood” ruling stating that a fetus is a person in the eyes of the law.

Just came across my news feed:

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday declaring a national emergency, barring the use of telecommunications equipment made by companies that are deemed a threat to national security, clearing the way for an outright ban on products made by Huawei.

The Executive Order did not name China or Chinese companies specifically. However, separately, and soon after the order was signed, the US Commerce Department did just that.

The Commerce Department added Huawei and 70 affiliates to its “Entity List” after it concluded that the Chinese company was engaged in activities “contrary to US national security or foreign policy interests”. Inclusion in the list means that a US company, person or government agency purchasing Huawei equipment now requires a specific license “to export, reexport and/or transfer (in-country).”

The US government claims Huawei’s equipment poses a security risk because the company might acquiesce to demands from Beijing to allow access to networks and private user data - claims that the company and its chief executive, Ren Zhengfei, have repeatedly denied.

Discussing this, remember that there are actually two new Alabama abortion laws this year. This one aimed at doctors (with the inclusion of a few other stupid ideas) and the earlier state constitutional amendment that implicitly criminalizes just about everyone involved. That amendment, voted on by the general public as part of the 2018 ballot, is passed but on the shelf, waiting until RvW is cleared out of the way.

It passed by 59%-41%.

Well, this is decidedly not good news, I’d say.

Every week dozens of metal flasks arrive at NOAA’s Earth System Research Laboratory in Boulder, Colorado, each one loaded with air from a distant corner of the world. Research chemist Ed Dlugokencky and his colleagues in the Global Monitoring Division catalog the canisters and then use a series of high-precision tools—a gas chromatograph, a flame ionization detector, sophisticated software—to measure how much carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane each flask contains.

These air samples—collected at observatories in Hawaii, Alaska, American Samoa, and Antarctica, and from tall towers, small aircraft, and volunteers on every continent—have been coming to Boulder for more than four decades, as part of one of the world’s longest-running greenhouse gas monitoring programs. The air in the flasks shows that the concentration of methane in the atmosphere had been steadily rising since 1983, before leveling off around 2000. “And then, boom, look at how it changes here,” Dlugokencky says, pointing at a graph on his computer screen. “This is really an abrupt change in the global methane budget, starting around 2007.”

The amount of methane in the atmosphere has been increasing ever since. And nobody really knows why. What’s more, no one saw it coming. Methane levels have been climbing more steeply than climate experts anticipated, to a degree “so unexpected that it was not considered in pathway models preparatory to the Paris Agreement,” as Dlugokencky and several coauthors noted in a recently published paper.

As the years plod on and the methane piles up, solving this mystery has taken on increasing urgency. Over a 20-year time frame, methane traps 86 times as much heat in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide. It is responsible for about a quarter of total atmospheric warming to date. And while the steady increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide are deeply worrying, they are at least conforming to scientists’ expectations. Methane is not. Methane—arguably humanity’s earliest signature on the climate—is the wild card.

We’ve had to do a normal number of funerals—the real world time constraints create a terrific sense of “rush” when people are least able to cope. Everything you can do in advance is a mercy to your survivors.

So, here’s my conspiracy: the Alabama forced birthers purposely passed a law so extreme that the SCOTUS will have no choice to either shoot it down or they will leave it to the lower courts (which will shoot it down). This in-turn saves face for the forced birthers, i.e., “Hey, we tried! But, continue to elect us and we will continue to try”.

Wendell, I deeply apologize if I’m coming off too harsh but as someone who has worked in immigration law in this country, I know how expensive and timely naturalization is. If we were to revise birth right citizenship, we would be making life very difficult for millions of people who know no home but the United States. My SiL’s cousins’ children got their citizenship this way. They attend American univeristies. They speak English. They hold jobs. They have ties to their parents home in Peru but it’s no different than my grandparents’ older siblings and cousins who did to Slovakia. You’re going to create a lot of potentially stateless people by getting rid of this and people who will feel like an outsider in their homes. Again I apologize if I come too harsh but I can’t compromise on this. I support things like making sure we are not getting criminals or people who are health risks nto the country and monitoring the border for ilegal substances being smuggled in like arms or drugs but if someone is following the law, they belong here IMO.

I know you’re not for retroactively stripping it. I just think you need to make legal residency more affordable before you even consider something like that. I think so much of these attitudes that people like the President and others who want to get rid of it have comes from a place of being lucky to be born to native born citizens or a parent already naturalized. We’ve done a great job integrating immigrants into our society and I genuinely feel that BR citizenship is a big part of why.

As I was trying to explain to my (mostly) apolitical sister earlier, virtually the entire “argument” these for such bans hinges on emotional appeals. That means using incorrect terminology because it leads to more visceral responses, portraying the women who undergo abortions as “victims” of an uncaring system, and society at large as somehow suffering from “genocide.”

That article by the self described ‘theocratic fascist’ (Matt Walsh) uses the phrase ‘abortion is a lifestyle choice for most women’. Just because you have had enough children, have career planning to do, are too young, too old…. It is irrelevant, but appeals to emotion are a valid weapon in the rhetoric of anti-choicers.
