I should note that it’s rather intriguing that Milo is talking “cell size” and “encrypted comms” when it’s been an established tenant of wingnut belief for ages that the day when the flag went up, most if not all of the Armed Forces would join the side of the “patriots.” The idea that those “patriots” would have to operate in the fashion of terrorists, maintaining small numbers and keeping in contact through encrypted means, doesn’t really paint the picture of proud revolutionaries “taking back” their country. It paints a picture more like the Branch Dildonians out at a bird sanctuary, reduced to begging people on social media to send them food and supplies.

Ayep, no suggestion of using contraceptives or morning-after pills. Just “Don’t have sex.” And this is a message that’s always aimed strictly at women, as the idea that a man should keep his pants zipped is never mentioned. Why? Oh, right, because he can just walk away.

Was at Oban Pride today (As in Oban, Scotland, a smallish town on the West coast of Scotland.) with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. This is the first Pride in Oban. It was a bit rainy, but it was definitely a success. Local MSP, and Scottish government minister, Mike Russell took part. We’re vaguely in the background of this photo he took- look for the pink umbrella.

Also, we’re somewhere in this video, which was shown on Scottish Television’s evening news! (Again, look for the pink umbrella.)

Ginni Thomas, the conservative activist and wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, wanted to “target” the “most questionable” precincts in Virginia with an anti-voter fraud campaign, according to an October 2016 email exchange she had with a prominent voter fraud alarmist and other conservative activists.

The emails were made public Friday in the litigation over a sensational report released by the group of the alarmist, J. Christian Adams, who also served on President Trump’s short-lived voter fraud commission.

For the most part, they are Libertarians and just like to shit-stir. If siding with trump helps that, they’ll do it. But mostly they just like being contrarian.

So basically they are not a Republican, they just play one on TV?

True, both of the Dakotas as well.

For that matter, most of the “Western” states are mostly empty space. The big population centers are big, true… but there is a LOT of open land west of the Mississippi.

They’re empty space, but they’re also already nearly at carrying capacity. Simply put, that’s because the West is where the ground is, but it’s very much NOT where the water is. Denver could probably not support the population of Greater New York or Greater LA. For that matter, there’s a very strong argument to be made that Greater LA can’t support the population of Greater LA. That argument is, in part, called Owens Lake.

This is, alas, very true. As a Midwesterner, the fresh water struggle is not very real, but I know in my head that it is a significant problem in the arid areas.

You called?

Voting for him grudgingly won’t get it. This is a fucking close-run thing. We have to back the nominee with absurd effort, passion, and expense. We have to smile and have a good time doing it. We have to know that this might be the best thing we ever do for the country.

He’s not my first choice.

In my view it’s ok, even good, to have opinions and express them before and during the primaries. This is when we find out how the potential candidates take hits and tune their messages. Both Obama and Hillary were much better candidates by the end of the 2008 primaries because of the hard-faught battle.

I was mostly ok with Bernie and even his fans, until they didn’t shape up once it was apparent he couldn’t win. If he had done what Hillary did and thrown his full support behind the nominee, no one would hae remembered or cared about their little tiffs during the primaries.

With regard to Biden in particular, his message that Democrats aren’t angry and just want to go back to the good old days before 2016 is a terrible one, and we should all point that out to him and see if he can catch a clue. If not, he shouldn’t be the nominee, because he is too naive and dishonest to be a good candidate or a good president. If he still wins the nomination, then yeah, we have to suck it up and be good foot soldiers. But now is not that time.

The very same! Now on the bright side, if we ever got serious about desalinating San Pedro Bay or Santa Monica Bay, we could allow it to re-fill (which can’t be said for Lake Tulare).

And that’s an advantage that might allow SoCal to maintain or even increase her population levels that Colorado or Wyoming, unfortunately, just does not have (Wyoming particularly unfortunately-so, because a few blue colonies in Rawlins, Laramie, Casper and Cheyenne would be enough to give a pair of blue Senate seats without doing much at all to dilute our strength in their donor states).

Given the fight that went on (and I think is still ongoing) to get Mono Lake back to a decent level I think Owen Lake getting more water is a bit of a pipe dream still.

And if they’d let Mono Lake dry out further and ecologically crash there would have been a lot more trouble in the area given its importance to migratory birds and California Gulls.

The latter version is by Bob Welsh, who was a member of Fleetwood Mac during the Bare Trees album. I think both Christine McVee and Mick Fleetwood played on the latter version.

If you like Bare Trees, pick up the Future Games album. Mystery To Me was a good album with Welsh too.

re: #134 Charmingly Persistent

Like I said: Not my first choice, and I won’t push the one (team) that is. Not going to paint myself into an oppositional corner that keeps me from making a banzai charge for the eventual nominee.

Ok, folks, if you don’t believe anything else I have said about Vietnam, believe this: Atrocities happen because higher authority gives at least tacit permission for them. In Vietnam this was usually the battallion commander, the highest ranking officer who routinely had contact with the troops. If the CO tolerated head chopping, heads would be chopped. If he tolerated the infamous ear necklaces, necklaces would be strung. If he didn’t put up with it, it rarely if ever happened. Most soldiers would not commit these crimes under any circumstances, but some would and barbarous conduct would spread like a disease when it was tolerated. Now we see that permission is coming, not from the local CO, but from the Commander-in-Chief. This is already ugly and it is going to get very much worse.

As I pointed out above this action by The Shithead In The Oval Office is going to alienate our allies even more than they are now PLUS it will embolden adversaries to unleash absolute brutality on our armed forces.

I have no doubt that Trump is doing this on the orders from Putin which were relayed by that traitor Pompeo.

And I’ve got a bad bad feeling that the military isn’t going to go along with this. I’m beginning to fear that they will attempt a coup to take out Trump and Pence.

Brexit Party overtakes Tories in poll on general election voting intentions

Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party has pushed the Tories into third place in voting intentions for a general election, according to a new opinion poll.

Theresa May, and especially her predecessor, totally misunderstood the rise of ethno-nationalism and new-fascism, and thought their Tory party could walk the line between modernity and atavism.

They thought wrong.

And while the Labour party is still the most popular, it’s leader is so distanced from reality that they too could fumble the ball.

So what may happen in the UK is what happened here with Trump - a minority of atavists take the reigns due to aged myopia of old-time mainline party leaders.

Maybe not on this thread. In the previous one, I linked a tweet when the election was hours old, and asked them if this meant they’d be re-legalising guns, even.

And even then I should also have brought up the White Australia Policy, which pretty much is going to be officially brought back for sure (UNofficially, it’s been back for over two decades, as most of Aussie Twitter was angrily pointing out).

So I read through the comment thread before logging on and see Trump wants to pardon fookin’ war criminals on Memorial Day.

The man is intentionally undermining every shared event or idea about American patriotism.

That is a slap in the face of every active duty, reservist, and veteran living and dead who would never think to commit a war crime. That will not only undermine respect for Memorial Day, it will also undermine respect for the military in general. (I don’t mean military worship from wingnuts, I mean the idea that the military is a law abiding organisation.)

I have one combat medal. I didn’t have to engage in any war crimes.

In the veterans fora that I follow, there is outrage across the spectrum of political support over this.

The Christians Making Atheists (John Pavlovitz)

Growing-up in the Church, I was taught that the worst thing one could be was a non-believer; that nothing was as tragic as a doomed soul that condemned itself by rejecting God. The religion of my childhood drew a sharp, clear line between the saved and the damned. All that mattered was making sure someone found themselves on the better side of this line—and the Atheists and Humanists didn’t have a shot.

In light of this supposed truth, the heart of the faith (I was told), was to live in a way that reflected the character and love of Jesus so vividly, so beautifully, that others were compelled to follow after him; that a Christian’s living testimony might be the catalyst for someone’s conversion. The Bible called it “making disciples” and it was the heart of our tradition. As the venerable hymn declared, we Jesus people were to be known by our love.

What a difference a couple of decades make.

I’m sorry to hear you’re stuck. I guess that’s an opportunity to gamble away all your money in the slot machines in the airport. /s

Thinking about that Pavlovitz piece above, what he’s really doing is saying that the actions of some douchecanoe Christians are what’s really driving people to atheism and away from churches. That’s a pretty shallow take on why a person becomes an atheist, and he’s trying to use us to shame his fellow believers (if you only followed the words of Christ, this wouldn’t be happening). Evangelicals can also justify their positions with the Bible.

There are plenty of douchecanoe atheists as well (for example, Sam Harris). No one makes the argument “Wow, Sam Harris is a real douchecanoe, therefore I’m going to become a Christian because all atheists are like him.”

I made the mistake of clicking on the original tweet. Holy crap there is a bunch of derp from conservatives responding to 8ch about that. 8Chan in that thread are threatening HBO and Vice if they use footage that was not authorised (that’s not how things work).

That being said, I wonder if the journalists found something - something very bad. 8Chan is a notorious haven for pedophiles and assorted scum.

Alms For The Roger Stone? Alms For The Roger Stone? (goes to Wonkette)

Roger Stone, his wife would like you to know, is broke. And he is not dealing with it well. Once in khaki suits, gee, he looked swell, full of that yankee-doodle-dee-dum, but now no one calls him Al anymore and he has to stand on a street corner singing “Brother Can You Spare A Dime?”

Yesterday, the conservative but also kind of Never Trumper site The Bulwark revealed the details of a grifty “fundraising” plea sent out by Stone’s wife Nydia, begging supporters to give money to the Stones in order to help them keep up the lifestyle to which they have become accustomed.

So, I found a nice chilling quote from HBO’s “Chernobyl” podcast.

It’s the cost of lies.
When people choose to lie,
and when everyone engages in a very passive conspiracy to promote the lie,
we can get away with it for a very long time.
But the truth just doesn’t care.
And it will get you.

I’m very worried that it’s real, but anyone driving US 95 will know for sure in another couple months. And yeah, it’s a modification on the Reichskriegsflagge, which admittedly pre-dates the Nazis but died with them and thus is likely inextricably linked now.

A good example of what Alexei Yurchak termed “hypernormalization”. Basically, by the late 1970s it was pretty obvious to everyone living in the USSR that their society was essentially falling apart; however, because no one could imagine any alternative to the status quo, a complete failure of the imagination (to put it mildly), everyone decided to put on a happy face and pretend that everything was completely normal - this lie became a self-fulfilling prophecy and in the end, the delusion became their reality. Or at least, until the lie completely fell apart.

Yurchak discussed this in his 2006 book, “Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More: The Last Soviet Generation”.

I’m in Tokyo with students. Today was a free day, so I went to Ikebukuro to get some gifts for family at Tokyu Hands. I found a pair of rain boots that my wife wants, but they only had the display model in her size (actually, a centimeter too big). I got back to the station and in the relative quiet heard a persistent beeping sound. The clerk had forgotten to remove the anti-theft device. So I had to haul back through the throngs to the store to get it removed. I’m now chilling in a park near Sensoji where a massive three-day festival is just ending (we’re staying nearby). Lots of guys with buzz cuts and full-body tattoos (if you know what I mean).

“The unborn” are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor; they don’t resent your condescension or complain that you are not politically correct; unlike widows, they don’t ask you to question patriarchy; unlike orphans, they don’t need money, education, or childcare; unlike aliens, they don’t bring all that racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. It’s almost as if, by being born, they have died to you. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus but actually dislike people who breathe.

Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn.

That quid pro quo scandal that was brewing in Austria which I posted about a couple of days back has now blown up into the collapse of the government.

Turns out Russian collusion isn’t a “witch hunt hoax” after all. At least not in Austria.

The country’s government collapsed on Saturday after Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said he was pulling the plug on his ruling coalition after just 17 months in office.

The move came barely 24 hours after the release of a bombshell video showing Heinz-Christian Strache, the far-right leader of his junior coalition partner, trying to trade public contracts for party donations from a woman he believed to be the wealthy niece of a Russian oligarch.

“Enough is enough,” Kurz said in a brief statement to the press from his baroque office in Vienna, describing the many challenges he faced in recent months in dealing with Strache’s Freedom Party, which despite its alignment with the chancellor’s center-right People’s Party on policy issues remained a lightning rod for criticism with its racist comments and other controversies.

The government crisis was a blow to the youthful chancellor who sees himself as the future of European conservatism and whose international stardom won him a private dinner with Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner in February.

Yeah, and not only do you have to worry about the right-wingers getting into power, you also have to remember that given uncle Vova’s history and former job, it is not altogether unfeasible that the right-wingers are just an asset for him and his Kremlin Crew, and may get conveniently stabbed in the back when they have outlived their usefulness, being replaced with something worse.

Looks like some heavy weather is coming to Central Europe, but Czech Republic will probably miss the worst of it.

Courtesy of Google Translate:

Through Central Europe, the pressure is moving very slowly to the northwest. Meteorologists expect more than 150 millimeters of rainfall to fall on the Alpine winds during Monday and Tuesday. The Czech Republic should avoid extreme rainfall.

“The rainfall zone is very close to our borders, but according to current forecasting materials, it seems that we will ‘get the worst’ out,” said Jan Šrámek, a meteorologist of the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute.

“Extreme rainfall” meteorologists expect in the southern half of Germany, especially on the winds of the Alps.

The most abundant rainfall is expected in the Czech Republic in the second half of Monday and Tuesday in the Bohemian Forest.

Swiss voters have approved stricter firearms legislation, bringing them more in line with the rest of the EU.

Swiss voters agreed on Sunday to adopt tighter gun controls in line with changes to European Union rules, heading off a clash with Brussels, projections for Swiss broadcaster SRF showed.

The projections from the gfs.bern polling outfit saw the measure passing in the binding referendum by a comfortable 67-33% margin.

The restrictions, which apply to non-EU member Switzerland because it is part of Europe’s Schengen open-border system, had raised hackles among shooting enthusiasts ahead of the vote under the Swiss system of direct democracy.

Failure to adopt the rules could have forced Switzerland to leave the passport-free Schengen zone and the Dublin joint system for handling asylum requests.

That is why I don’t like the arguments “what about rape and incest?” It puts a divide between “this” kind of abortion and “that” kind of abortion.

It seems to me the correct response is “keep your government out of women’s parts you perverts.”

Although I think calling so-called pro-lifers “pro-perverts” is a good way to turn their arguments on their heads.

It doesn’t matter what exception (rape) you come up with for legal safe abortion, they will argue against it (even with horrible rapist rights arguments).

I prefer thinking of them as pro-perverts. It doesn’t matter why a woman wants a safe abortion.

A lot of that around here. From the initial plowing and planting up to harvest. Many larger farms have had automated GPS steering systems on their tractors for years. Someone is still in the drivers seat, but the tractor steers itself for the most part. Only time the driver had to do anything is when a new field will be created. The driver would just name the field in the system and turn on the recording to record their movements and coordinates for that field dimensions. Many systems optimize the track taken after the initial input to maximize use and time. Pretty cool stuff. Have a couple friends that went to training for this stuff. Have watched it first hand and it is pretty cool.

That’ll work for grain, and nuts, and some tree-based fruits, but there’s crops that just can’t be automated — which creates labor shortages for California agriculture.

There’s no way to automate grape harvesting, it needs a knowledgeable, experienced picker to grab this bunch, this one and this one, but leave the ones next to it for a few more days or a week; the pruning that happens every year before the grapes start showing requires a skillful selection of which branches… you can’t just grab it all and throw out the losers, the vintner needs their grapes to be a specific readiness.

They’re actually having a hard time finding enough people, because the guys who’ve been doing it for 40 years can’t continue forever, and it’s become difficult to bring in young trainees (apparently Mexicans are the only people interested in this profession). Same for strawberries, only a human eye can recognize proper ripeness, and only a human hand can pick it without bruising it.

This is one of the many reasons why even the most conservative parts of California aren’t so anti-immigration as conservatives elsewhere.

Same for strawberries, only a human eye can recognize proper ripeness, and only a human hand can pick it without bruising it.

This is one of the many reasons why even the most conservative parts of California aren’t so anti-immigration as conservatives elsewhere.

Especially here on the steep slopes of the Rhine & Moselle, right now the Poles have been replaced by Bulgarians and Romanians during the wine harvest.

Trump pissed on the Gold Star families without any meaningful blowback from the GOP and generally GOP-supporting veteran groups. That he’d continue to push once that happened is no surprise - it’s what a bully does.

That’ll work for grain, and nuts, and some tree-based fruits, but there’s crops that just can’t be automated — which creates labor shortages for California agriculture.

One weekend in Italy we took the kids to a winegrowers’ cooperative for a holiday. They got to pick and get in the wooden vat to crush the grapes. In the meantime, the real work was going on behind them—the independent growers putting their trailers on the scale, where a probe picked up the sugar content and some other criteria. Then it printed their receipt with a share of the cooperativa’s projected profit and augured the grapes into a large stainless steel production line.

Kind of like the folks against LGBT think more about Teh Geyh Sex than gays do.

And then there are world class assholes such as Jesse Lee Peterson who told a caller on his show that a woman who is raped and has a child should spend her life with the rapist so the child has their “natural father.”

But what else would you expect to hear from a sick race traitor who pals around with white supremacists?

The Christians Making Atheists (John Pavlovitz)

And those that especially hate hypocrisy rapidly note that the hierarchy (and this applies to the Catholic Church as well) which claims the high moral ground and authority as sole arbiter of the Holy Word protects their own rather than acting in an ethic and moral way.

I think I keep some of my friends simply because I don’t inquire where their religious viewpoints currently are. Many are Catholic and I know the various scandals distressed them - and initially were written off as “not our parish - our priest(s) are the good ones”.* And some are/were quite conservative Catholics and I did not want to delve too deep below the surface and see what might be lying there.

* - And I have cousins who are priests. But have not talked to them in recent years either.

re: #272 Anymouse 🌹

I think there are two things going on:
1. It might not be driving people to atheism, but it’s driving current members (and offspring of) to essentially being non-practicing and/or non-supportive of the Christian organizations. So yes he is mainly aiming at fellow believers.

2. The moral authority of all Christian organizations is being wrecked by the actions of the “douche canoes”. Which is pretty much what you eventually get once you fail to police your own or provide some consistent vocal dissent to.*

Atheists really don’t have a central document or organization they claim authority through.

* - I have no idea how the membership of the “liberal” churches is going. It might be that they are holding their own since they are more accepting. Or it may be that they are eroding faster since it seems often that the moderates take the hit when the fanatics start seriously poisoning the well.

My son was supposed to fly out of Santa Fe, have a layover in Dallas, and then end up in Lexingon. Well, the weather messed that up. RC is just so big that you can’t categorize it. They’ve got everything from crazy-assed medievalists to nuns that chain themselves to the security fences at nuke weapons sites. One of the best people in this town is an ancient nun who spends a bit of time on the bus. If you really internalize Catholic cosmology, and have the right personality, you wind up as one kind of fanatic or another.

Gallup shows a drop in church membership especially among Catholics

news.gallup.com

Anymouse was wondering about mainline churches. Appears that they’re really hemorrhaging members.

vox.com

Mainline churches today remain diverse but tend to share a cluster of overlapping values: They may endorse same-sex marriage in the church, hold more lenient views on extramarital sex, confess less exclusivist views of eternal salvation, and focus more political efforts toward Christian social relief rather than Christian moral teachings; many mainlines have formal fellowship agreements with one another.

These churches are dying off at a very quick pace. Within the Presbyterian family, the “mainline” Presbyterian Church (USA) is shrinking while the “evangelical” Presbyterian Church of America is growing. Within the Lutheran family, the “mainline” Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (yes, the “Evangelical Lutherans” are mainline, not evangelical; one of many absurdities in religious verbiage) is shrinking rapidly while “evangelical” Wisconsin or Missouri Synod Lutherans are either holding steady or shrinking slowly. Within the Methodist family, “mainline” United Methodists are shrinking while “evangelical” Free Methodists are holding steady. Both sides of the Baptist family tree are shrinking, but the mainline side is shrinking faster.

Where I live in the Koreatown section of Los Angeles there are many old stately churches just going out of business. Since I moved into the area in 1987 the large Christian Science church across the street closed in 1990 and a Korean Chrisitan church bought it. The Disciples of Christ church on Whilshire/Normandie went out of business in 2005 and a right wing Pulpit Pimp-0-Rama bought it. The original Sinai Temple at 4th/New Hampshire also closed and Korean Presbyterians bought it. The Lutheran Church at 6th/Wilton closed. The large Methodist church on Wilshire hosts six different splinter congregations. The Presbyterian Church on Wilshire is scheduled to close and Koreans want to buy it. The other Presbyterian Church in the area at 3rd/Western is now occupied by the ASSemblies of Gawd.

I am glad to see the young folks are leading the way out of these corrupted churches. The damage the Religious Right has done to this country will take a couple generations to repair.

Thousands of pounds worth of model railway exhibits have been destroyed in an act of “total wanton destruction”.

Market Deeping Model Railway Club lost years of work in the raid at Welland Academy in Stamford on Saturday.

Its chairman Peter Davies, 70, said exhibits were smashed, thrown around and stamped on, including a locomotive unit worth about £8,500.

Four youths have been arrested on suspicion of burglary and criminal damage.

The club had set up an exhibition in the school for viewing on Sunday.
