I should note that it’s rather intriguing that Milo is talking “cell size” and “encrypted comms” when it’s been an established tenant of wingnut belief for ages that the day when the flag went up, most if not all of the Armed Forces would join the side of the “patriots.” The idea that those “patriots” would have to operate in the fashion of terrorists, maintaining small numbers and keeping in contact through encrypted means, doesn’t really paint the picture of proud revolutionaries “taking back” their country. If not, he shouldn’t be the nominee, because he is too naive and dishonest to be a good candidate or a good president. If he still wins the nomination, then yeah, we have to suck it up and be good foot soldiers. But now is not that time.

Given the fight that went on (and I think is still ongoing) to get Mono Lake back to a decent level I think Owen Lake getting more water is a bit of a pipe dream still.

So I looked at that dudes linkedin account. He has a communications degree and has spent pretty much all of his career since school working on political campaigns or working PR. What the fuck actually qualifies him to talk to anybody about the “dangers” of vaccines? It amazes me how high an opinion of themselves some people have.
Edit: Oh and Pharmacutical companies aren’t getting rich off vaccines. Vaccines are about as low profit as it gets in the pharmaceutical industry, that’s one of the reasons there are so few providers of things like the flu vaccine. There is just no real money there.

Thinking about that Pavlovitz piece above, what he’s really doing is saying that the actions of some douchecanoe Christians are what’s really driving people to atheism and away from churches. That’s a pretty shallow take on why a person becomes an atheist, and he’s trying to use us to shame his fellow believers (if you only followed the words of Christ, this wouldn’t be happening). Evangelicals can also justify their positions with the Bible.
There are plenty of douchecanoe atheists as well (for example, Sam Harris). No one makes the argument “Wow, Sam Harris is a real douchecanoe, therefore I’m going to become a Christian because all atheists are like him.”

I’m in Tokyo with students. Today was a free day, so I went to Ikebukuro to get some gifts for family at Tokyu Hands. I found a pair of rain boots that my wife wants, but they only had the display model in her size (actually, a centimeter too big). “Enough is enough,” Kurz said in a brief statement to the press from his baroque office in Vienna, describing the many challenges he faced in recent months in dealing with Strache’s Freedom Party, which despite its alignment with the chancellor’s center-right People’s Party on policy issues remained a lightning rod for criticism with its racist comments and other controversies.
The government crisis was a blow to the youthful chancellor who sees himself as the future of European conservatism and whose international stardom won him a private dinner with Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner in February.

We’re seeing some of that here, particularly with irrigation systems and tracking cattle.
A lot of that around here. From the initial plowing and planting up to harvest. Many larger farms have had automated GPS steering systems on their tractors for years. Someone is still in the drivers seat, but the tractor steers itself for the most part. Only time the driver had to do anything is when a new field will be created. The driver would just name the field in the system and turn on the recording to record their movements and coordinates for that field dimensions. Many systems optimize the track taken after the initial input to maximize use and time. Pretty cool stuff. Have a couple friends that went to training for this stuff. Have watched it first hand and it is pretty cool.

There’s no way to automate grape harvesting, it needs a knowledgeable, experienced picker to grab this bunch, this one and this one, but leave the ones next to it for a few more days or a week; the pruning that happens every year before the grapes start showing requires a skillful selection of which branches… you can’t just grab it all and throw out the losers, the vintner needs their grapes to be a specific readiness.
They’re actually having a hard time finding enough people, because the guys who’ve been doing it for 40 years can’t continue forever, and it’s become difficult to bring in young trainees (apparently Mexicans are the only people interested in this profession). Same for strawberries, only a human eye can recognize proper ripeness, and only a human hand can pick it without bruising it.
This is one of the many reasons why even the most conservative parts of California aren’t so anti-immigration as conservatives elsewhere.

So I read through the comment thread before logging on and see Trump wants to pardon fookin’ war criminals on Memorial Day.
The man is intentionally undermining every shared event or idea about American patriotism.
That is a slap in the face of every active duty, reservist, and veteran living and dead who would never think to commit a war crime. That will not only undermine respect for Memorial Day, it will also undermine respect for the military in general. (I don’t mean military worship from wingnuts, I mean the idea that the military is a law abiding organisation.)
I have one combat medal. I didn’t have to engage in any war crimes.
In the veterans fora that I follow, there is outrage across the spectrum of political support over this.
Trump pissed on the Gold Star families without any meaningful blowback from the GOP and generally GOP-supporting veteran groups. That he’d continue to push once that happened is no surprise - it’s what a bully does.

One weekend in Italy we took the kids to a winegrowers’ cooperative for a holiday. They got to pick and get in the wooden vat to crush the grapes. In the meantime, the real work was going on behind them—the independent growers putting their trailers on the scale, where a probe picked up the sugar content and some other criteria. Then it printed their receipt with a share of the cooperativa’s projected profit and augured the grapes into a large stainless steel production line.

I think I keep some of my friends simply because I don’t inquire where their religious viewpoints currently are. Many are Catholic and I know the various scandals distressed them - and initially were written off as “not our parish - our priest(s) are the good ones”.* And some are/were quite conservative Catholics and I did not want to delve too deep below the surface and see what might be lying there.

Thinking about that Pavlovitz piece above, what he’s really doing is saying that the actions of some douchecanoe Christians are what’s really driving people to atheism and away from churches. That’s a pretty shallow take on why a person becomes an atheist, and he’s trying to use us to shame his fellow believers (if you only followed the words of Christ, this wouldn’t be happening). Evangelicals can also justify their positions with the Bible.
There are plenty of douchecanoe atheists as well (for example, Sam Harris). No one makes the argument “Wow, Sam Harris is a real douchecanoe, therefore I’m going to become a Christian because all atheists are like him.”
I think there are two things going on:
1. It might not be driving people to atheism, but it’s driving current members (and offspring of) to essentially being non-practicing and/or non-supportive of the Christian organizations. So yes he is mainly aiming at fellow believers.
2. The moral authority of all Christian organizations is being wrecked by the actions of the “douche canoes”. Which is pretty much what you eventually get once you fail to police your own or provide some consistent vocal dissent to.*
Atheists really don’t have a central document or organization they claim authority through.

Well, now that I’ve calmed down a bit, all flights out of Vegas have been grounded due to weather. Not AA’s fault, but I was on a bit of a short fuse because they lost our luggage on the way out to Salt Lake City.
We may be stuck in Vegas for two days as of right now.

Mainline churches today remain diverse but tend to share a cluster of overlapping values: They may endorse same-sex marriage in the church, hold more lenient views on extramarital sex, confess less exclusivist views of eternal salvation, and focus more political efforts toward Christian social relief rather than Christian moral teachings; many mainlines have formal fellowship agreements with one another.
These churches are dying off at a very quick pace. Within the Presbyterian family, the “mainline” Presbyterian Church (USA) is shrinking while the “evangelical” Presbyterian Church of America is growing. Within the Lutheran family, the “mainline” Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (yes, the “Evangelical Lutherans” are mainline, not evangelical; one of many absurdities in religious verbiage) is shrinking rapidly while “evangelical” Wisconsin or Missouri Synod Lutherans are either holding steady or shrinking slowly. Within the Methodist family, “mainline” United Methodists are shrinking while “evangelical” Free Methodists are holding steady. Both sides of the Baptist family tree are shrinking, but the mainline side is shrinking faster.
Where I live in the Koreatown section of Los Angeles there are many old stately churches just going out of business. Since I moved into the area in 1987 the large Christian Science church across the street closed in 1990 and a Korean Chrisitan church bought it. The Disciples of Christ church on Whilshire/Normandie went out of business in 2005 and a right wing Pulpit Pimp-0-Rama bought it. The original Sinai Temple at 4th/New Hampshire also closed and Korean Presbyterians bought it. The Lutheran Church at 6th/Wilton closed. The large Methodist church on Wilshire hosts six different splinter congregations. The Presbyterian Church on Wilshire is scheduled to close and Koreans want to buy it. The other Presbyterian Church in the area at 3rd/Western is now occupied by the ASSemblies of Gawd.
I am glad to see the young folks are leading the way out of these corrupted churches. The damage the Religious Right has done to this country will take a couple generations to repair.

Market Deeping Model Railway Club lost years of work in the raid at Welland Academy in Stamford on Saturday.

Four youths have been arrested on suspicion of burglary and criminal damage.

Part of the decline in mainline churches is they didn’t follow the megachurch model. Their theology and geography held to the neighborhood church not the suburban expansion.

Those replies kept bringing up scenarios like where they were at a work place where only Fox News was on at all points, and it’s like 1) you can always ask to have the channel changed, and 2) if they’re being inundated like this passively, what makes you think one or two hours are going to actually change that, especially when so much will be put toward undermining that very same message Dems supposedly got through ‘unfiltered’.
