Of course, and in that light, Google’s move is entirely understandable. But I’m curious as to this will affect consumers; as I said, I don’t know about how well Huawei devices sell in the US, but here at least, it’s phenomenal. Huawei has positioned itself here as an affordable alternative to Samsung and Apple - the latter having especially eye-watering prices, far beyond the reach of the average Czech consumer.

Huawei has not made very many inroads to the US at all that I’m aware of. The Android ecosystem here is basically Samsung, LG and OnePlus. There hasn’t even been a Google Nexus in 4 years, though the high-end one was about the last popular Huawei handset in the US.

A few months back I was looking for a new smartphone. I briefly considered Huawei, but ended up going with a Nokia 5.

I like it - I’m not a power user or anything, and it offered a nice, clean Android OS with very minimal bloatware.

A good and reliable phone, and still has a removable battery, which is something I like.

I find the Huawei flagship phones cost about as much as all of the other flagship phones and their cheap phones have crap radios. If I am looking for a decent inexpensive unlocked phone I go with the motorola G7+ or whatever the newest in that line is. It isn’t as flashy as your samsungs, Pixels, and apples and what not, but it is a hell of a phone for the price.

BIden could very well run Trump off the court next year, but I fear his conciliatory tone towards Republicans will only encourage them to get worse. I see his strategy, which seems to be taking a page from the Obama unity campaign of 2008, and like I said, it might work - especially to bring back the Obama voters who defected to Trump (it still boggles my mind that that happened) - but was he asleep when the GOP blocked everything Obama tried to do?

To be fair, there are also a lot of rich asshole wannabes. In fact, they probably outnumber actual rich assholes by a large margin. There is no shortage of rich assholes here in the DFW megalopolex, but there are swarms, vast hordes, of wannabes everywhere you go. I thought for a second that Dunning-Kruger cases should be included, then I realized that the syndrome is widely distributed throughout the scale. It might be most prevalent among the libertarians, but that is speculation.

What We Learned Investigating a Network of Islamophobic Facebook Pages

Snopes traced at least 24 Facebook pages spreading anti-muslim vitriol and conspiracy theory back to one evangelical activist. Here’s why that matters.

A Snopes investigation on 15 May 2019 looked deeply into a small group of radical evangelical Christians that re-purposed Facebook pages and PACs to build a coordinated, pro-Trump network that spreads hate and conspiracy theories — below is a re-cap of key points. The content includes the assertion that the survivors of the Parkland school massacre are on a “leftist-Islamic payroll” and that Islamic refugee resettlement is “cultural destruction and subjugation.”

The names of these Facebook pages imply diverse support from Americans, with titles like “Blacks for Trump” and “Jews and Christians for America.” But snopes.com found that each of these pages can be tied to a radical evangelical activist named Kelly Monroe Kullberg, who is neither black nor Jewish. We found at least 24 pages in the Kullberg network, which could be in violation of Facebook’s ban on “coordinated inauthentic behavior.”

For some years, I have reported on the veritable army of itinerant hate mongers who spread anti-Islamic propaganda through the evangelical/fundy “guest speaker” networks. This is an ideal vector, since they have a semi-captive and largely credulous audience and outsiders rarely hear the often hair-raising claims. This is where ideas of rampant shariah law and Judeo-Islamic conspiracy reside before they spill over into public discourse by way of the intellectual bankrupt and morally depraved Texas legislature and its counterparts elsewhere.

well, for starters, government schools and private schools are apples and oranges, the former have to take any and every student sent to them and can only kick them out under extreme circumstances.

but if we simply see education as another commodity to be offered at the lowest possible cost, then our current approach is valid.

So, my three students from earlier today, all of whom have Huawei phones, were telling me they’re planning on getting something else that’s not Huawei - and in the immediate future (like in the next couple weeks or so).

You know, I genuinely feel sorry for the fella down at the Huawei store at Avion Shopping Park (a mall about 3 km from where I live). The poor devil is probably under siege right about now.

Like I posted earlier, Huawei is very popular here and they have a strong market presence. Needless to say, this move is major news here.

Missed big parts of the lead-up to this. It’s not that your description is untrue, but it has some big gaps. My daughter quit her first teaching job mostly over violence—she had one hospitalization and one walking-wounded broken bone in her first year. That was not an urban school, but a “good” country school in a mostly rural university county. (She moved on to a youth corrections facility where she knew from their uniforms who the bad guys were.)

Almost any question on social trends has more than one driving force, confusing, potentiating, and mitigating each other.

Huawei has responded.

Fresh off the sledgehammer blow of having its Android license revoked by Google in response to US government demands, Huawei has issued its first, limited response, which leaves more questions open than it answers. In a statement emailed to The Verge, Huawei underscores its contributions to the growth of Android globally — which most recently saw the company’s Android phone sales growing by double digits while every other leading smartphone vendor was shrinking or stagnant — and reassures current owners of Huawei and (subsidiary brand) Honor phones that they will continue to receive security updates and after-sales service. That promise also covers phones that are already shipped and in stock at stores globally, but no additional promises are made beyond that.

For its part, Huawei has been making preparations for an eventuality of losing access to software from US companies like Google and Microsoft, and it has been developing an in-house operating system alternative to Android. And looking at the really local news where I live, a local free ‘zine got a scoop, and it ain’t pretty for the conservative-led city government:

Stockholm’s general shelters are in poor condition.
In the event of a crisis or war, they could not be used, according to the real estate office.
And there is no money to fix them.

Stockholm city is responsible for 22 active shelters. But none of them meet the requirements - and they cannot fulfill their function as shelters in the event of a crisis or war, Mitt i [local free ‘zine] can now reveal.

The protective shelters are used today as, for example, garages. But the city is obliged to be able put them in service within 48 hours, which is currently not possible. It appears from the real estate office’s budget for the years 2020-2022.

What would happen if there was a crisis or war?

- We can’t handle the 48 hour limit. It is a question of how to plan, says Thomas Schillén, property manager at the real estate office.

In order to be able to use the protective shelters, good ventilation, shock wave doors and toilets are required. It would take many millions to be able to fix them, money missing from the budget.

On the bright side, I’m looking forward to It: Chapter Two later this summer.

It: Chapter One was absolutely brilliant. One of the all-time best cinematic adaptations of a work by Stephen King, at least for me. Granted, the film wasn’t a 100% absolutely faithful telling of the source material, but it sure as hell captured the spirit of the novel.

I’m… actually pretty satisfied.

Bran is smart, has supernatural assistance to enhance his smarts, a well-chosen advisory council, won’t have offspring so there’s no worry about hereditary whackos to succeed him… and I choose to think he took Samwell’s suggestion seriously to maybe plant seeds of eventual democracy.

Sansa as Queen in the North of an independent kingdom… she’ll be good at it.

Arya heading west of westeros, where the maps don’t go and nobody knows what’s out there… I smell sequel/spinoff. (although I’m sort of sniffly that she turned down Gendry; they were a cute couple and could have been happy together).

Jon with the Northmen… he’s got a friend, and a dire wolf, probably a good thing he won’t have another love interest since the two he had already ended badly.

Jamie and Cersei’s bodies being findable and not crushed beyond recognition under all those rocks, relieves us of the possibility of anyone worrying they might have got away.

The Unsullied have a nice piece of land, and since none of them will ever breed perhaps they’ll do a good job of recruiting suitable couples to provide their realm with a next generation.

Not sure where the Dothraki are going to end up; was I not paying attention at a crucial moment when that was disclosed?

The missile shown is an S-125 Neva/Pechora (NATO codename SA-3 Goa). It has been in service since 1961 and is still being upgraded. It is command guided and, depending on the sophistication of the ground based software, can be guided to a point on the ground as easily as it can to an aircraft. US and NATO Nike Hercules missiles had a similar capability, as did the Soviets’ V-75 (SA-2 Guideline). The Houthi Qaher short range ballistic missile is a modified S-75 and Iraq had a similar version during the lead-up to the 2003 war.
The idea is that radar tracks both the target aircraft and the outgoing missile, a computer uses this data to generate steering commands. The surface to surface mode substitutes ground coordinates for the position of the aircraft.
I kind of doubt that this is happening in the video, because of the low-angle launch. Normally, a high, semi ballistic trajectory would be used to gain the most range, with the flight path adjusted continuously as the missile closes the target, either an airborne aircraft or a point on the ground.
There were also short range command guided SAMs, like the British Tigercat, that used a visual tracker like those used with anti-tank missiles.
Many reports indicate that the S-125 has a visual tracker as a backup, though this would only be usable at short range.

It is a matter of utility. Nothing wrong, for example, with taking on a mortgage on a home that you have the utility of being able to live in for less than you would pay in rent for a similar property, and one that will appreciate in value over and above the cost of the mortgage.

I watched the first two episodes with my GF and neither of us had any interest in continuing. But it seemed necessary to be aware of what’s happening in order to catch half the references in popular culture and discourse these days.

In fairness, Dorne plays a much larger role in the books. That was one of the first D&D choices of cutting source material to streamline the show.

Yeah. Hell, when I heard that Michael Keaton had been cast as Batman, my first reaction back in the day was like “WTF? He’s a comedy actor.”

But the most important thing about the Batman character isn’t Batman….it’s Bruce Wayne. And Keaton pulled that off very well, IMHO, as did Christian Bale. Different interpretations to be sure, but very well done interpretations.

My favorite Superman/Clark Kent is probably always going to be Christoper Reeve for a similar reason - he absolutely nailed the Clark Kent role. And as someone pointed out (Alan Moore?), Clark Kent is Kal-El’s subtle critique of humanity….bumbling, ineffective and generally hapless.

Yes — but the Dorne storyline was totally butchered. Remember shows that said “Names have been changed to protect the innocent”? In this case, the names have been preserved, just the entire story has been changed with no resemblance in personalities or action to the original GRRM story.

Superman is always Superman. He takes on the alter ego to “blend in”, but he can never not be Superman.

Since the larger elephant is actually significantly behind the babies, it’s not in the same focal plane- if you look closely, it’s already starting to fall out of focus compared to the babies. A low enough f-stop combined with zoom compression, and the fact that the additional cropping results in a forced perspective, could explain the anomalies you are noticing. Given the number of elephant pictures (among other things) she posts, it seems a jump to go from zero to fake on the basis of a second-hand “enhancing” of the original.

(Note: I’m making an educated guess on the lens and aperture, since the exif data has been stripped from original file.)
