Not many numbers from L’ville yet, and Western Ky either. Rocky’s Eastern Ky base reported 1st.

Pointless, dumbest, life-changing, best injury:
In Basic Training I ramboed out of a 2 1/2 ton truck before it had quite stopped.

Results:
Minor broken wrist=delayed my BCT graduation=pulled orders for Camp Wolters TX=stuck at Ft Knox for entire 1965-67 Army career=met Master Sergeant’s daughter=Wife=4 kids, 4 grandkids, 1 GGKid.

Did you know that there was a special Congressional election today? There was, in the 12th District of Pennsylvania, the rural north-central part of the state. And if the Democrats are expecting to win the Keystone State next year… they’d better pray that tonight’s an aberration.

With 26% of the vote in, Republican Fred Keller has 73.8% of the vote against Democrat Marc Fridenberg’s 26.2%. That’s a 7.8% swing against Fridenberg compared to last November, when he lost to since-resigned incumbent Tom Marino. (We really can’t go back further than that because Pennsylvania was thoroughly redistricted in 2018.)

“Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar,” every “supreme leader,” every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there-on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot.

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.”

There’s something about Valley’s drawing style that I find incredibly offputting, even though I agree with the points he’s trying to make.

Not that a hack like Weiss (or Stephen Miller) doesn’t deserve to be caricatured, but the way he does it is unpleasantly similar to the look and feel of so much classical anti-Semitic illustration that my first reaction is always “eeewwwww…. who’s attacking us now,” before I realize the phone call is, so to speak, coming from inside the house.

I’m guessing the generals and admirals told Hair Furor, “No fucking way are we doing something this stupid again.”

Trump has never been interested in starting a war; that was all on Bolton.

re: #115 Brian J.

Trump won by 36 in that district, and Marino by 32 in November 2018. We’ve moved backwards in a critical state! Do you want to admit that now or on some ugly night next November?

Republicans always do better in special elections and even more so in massively red districts where Democrats don’t have an up ticket reason to turn out.

re: #54 Decatur Deb

Pointless, dumbest, life-changing, best injury:
In Basic Training I ramboed out of a 2 1/2 ton truck before it had quite stopped.

Results:
Minor broken wrist=delayed my BCT graduation=pulled orders for Camp Wolters TX=stuck at Ft Knox for entire 1965-67 Army career=met Master Sergeant’s daughter=Wife=4 kids, 4 grandkids, 1 GGKid.

I think this counts as a win

That district is redder than crimson. No Democrat has a chance to even run a close race. When it comes to voter patterns, Pennsylvania is like a 5 on a dice cube. The corners and center are blue the rest deep deep redder than Mississippi.
