Security researchers discovered a Linux version of Winnti, a malware used by Chinese government-sponsored hackers, which operates as a backdoor on compromised hosts. Researchers at Alphabet’s cybersecurity unit Chronicle found Winnti malware on the Bayer drug company’s systems after Bayer was attacked by Chinese hackers. The researchers detected the Linux variant when scanning for Winnti on Chronicle’s VirusTotal platform. Its components include a rootkit element that conceals the malware on infected hosts, and the backdoor trojan itself. The variant’s code resembled the Winnti 2.0 Windows version, and conducted similar handling of outbound communications with its command-and-control (C&C) server. Moreover, the Linux iteration enabled Chinese hackers to link to infected hosts while bypassing C&C servers.

Bill authorizing NYS to send along Trump’s tax returns to Congress upon request passed the Assembly, meaning that it heads to Cuomo’s desk.

The State Senate passed the bill earlier this month.

If Congress requests tax information from NYS, it means the NYS Department of Tax and Finance will be able to provide Congress with the NY tax returns that are essentially based on the federal returns (there are differences in how NYS tax obligations are taxed versus the federal tax, but the worksheets and computations would be a look at Trump’s financial picture in a way Trump doesn’t want revealed).

Yesterday, one my students messaged me, “Have you seen that creepy little sales assistant robot at T-Mobile?”

I saw it today, and I thought it was really neat. Wheeled up to me, said “Hello; what kind of help do you need today?” (well, in Czech obviously) and I replied (in Czech), “I’m just looking today, thanks.”

I don’t know why my student thought it was creepy - I thought was cool as hell. Little robotic sales assistant - one of the human T-Mobile assistants explained that it can give you a basic rundown of promo phone features and direct you to a human rep if you have more specific questions or for matters regarding billing.

The DOJ backed down on Schiff’s subpoena and has agreed to deliver documents he’s requested.

This really dovetails with my experience working with law enforcement investigations. Things are done methodically; you don’t jump from evidence right to punishment, much as we might all want that to be the case.

It’s like getting a freak out of a house that he’s barricaded himself in. Methodically surround the property. Cover the escape routes. Start making it more uncomfortable for the freak to stay that it is to leave.

I think the long-term goal is to get Trump to just crack and either resign, or do something so rash that removing him becomes a no-brainer. The GOP wants to get rid of him - he’s going to cost them their seats - but their Deplorable hard-core base is all “Ride Or Die” for Don the Con.

Impeachment requires investigations by Congress - specifically the House.

Those are underway. Mueller’s report is a roadmap for investigations and more.
NYS is giving House Democrats the end run around Trump blocking IRS release of his federal returns, by passing (still awaiting Cuomo signature) bill allowing Congress to get state tax returns upon request. Trump wont be able to block that - and we’d get the financial information that Trump has been trying to block all along.

Financial crimes are at the heart of Trumpworld. It’s what Cohen admitted to, and what the SDNY found as they identified Trump engaged in money laundering (federal felony) as an unindicted coconspirator. We forget that in the midst of everything else.

Mueller found obstruction of justice - impeachable offenses. They’re also worthy of indictment but for DOJ rules against indicting a sitting president.

Each of the House committees investigating Trumpworld are digging up new dirt, finding new obstruction, and making the case.

It’s not quick or easy - or something that will wrap up in an hour like Law and Order compressing everything from the crime to trial into an hour procedural.

I’m thinking that the critical mass for impeachment will come this summer - August. It mirrors what happened with Watergate, but we’ve got all the factors in play. Trump isn’t popular, his crimes are known, the GOP is obstructing and enabling on behalf of Trump, Congressional GOPers are likely to get caught in the obstruction charges too.

The thing that might cause things to break faster would be Mueller testifying to Congress directly. Hearing him talk, as opposed to letting his barr-dowlerized report do the talking, would be more persuasive and provide the soundbites to counter Trump’s nonsensical ravings of a lunatic mind.

Bonus: It was shot at Matador Canyon Beach, up the coast in Malibu, almost to County Line. One of my favorite spots - you hike down into a U-shaped cove, utterly isolated from the rest of the world, which is why it’s so popular for filming (keeps the walk-through looky-loos and dickheads out).

It’s also clothing-optional, which is why many years ago, I used it as a location to shoot nudes of aspiring models.

It’s up to Pelosi, Schumer and the congressional dems to keep making the case that Trump, his corrupt cronies and his disastrous know-nothing policies are making people’s lives worse.

It’s the same fight that is going on with Trump’s butt-buddy, Vlad Putin in Russia. My friends there refer to it as “an argument between the TV and the refrigerator.” As in, the Putin-controlled TV stations tell them everything is fine, couldn’t be better, WINNING, DUH! …

… but the empty fridge tells them that they are hungry, their job is shit and the country is going to hell in a handbasket.

And so how can we square the difference between Russia’s objective reality with the optimism of its people? Which is the real Russia? In many respects, they both are. The way people feel about their standard of living is often as important as the reality of their “objective” conditions. If a person is afraid to walk the streets at night, it can be as debilitating to their quality of life as living in a high-crime area even if, in reality, crime rates are low. The perception of a problem (however unfounded) can be as crippling as the reality. In Russia, the opposite is true. Putin’s increasingly muscular approach to foreign policy — and his effective modern-day propaganda machine — diverts Russians’ attention from their deteriorating living standards.

But the wide gulf between perception and reality can only be sustained for so long.

The problem comes when you have to put blame on someone. And it’s terrifyingly easy to blame scapegoats and let the people in power skate off to mess things up even further because perception still colors reality. Sure, there’s a problem, but don’t you see, it’s not the leaders’ fault, it’s that devilish, evil OTHER.

1984 kinda did the deep dive into how easy it was to distract people from problems by not just lying about the existence of problems, but making sure the people had an easy boogeyman to blame for the problems they couldn’t simply ignore away.

And never think to question any of it. It may be a fundamental problem of human nature, but the biggest problem is that Democrats tend to appeal to peoples’ self-interest; Republicans tend to appeal to their hates. two interesting polls:

A new Quinnipiac poll finds that American voters support requiring background checks for all gun buyers, 94% to 4%.

Voters also support stricter gun laws in the U.S. by 61% to 34%. Republicans, gun owners and voters in households where there is a gun are the only listed groups opposed.

A new Quinnipiac poll finds 28% of American voters say abortion should be legal in all cases, while 32% say abortion should be legal in most cases and just 27% say abortion should be illegal in most cases and 8% say it should be illegal in all cases.

NightWare also is launching two clinical trials for its digital intervention, one of which is being conducted within Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals.

“We’re FDA regulated but because this is a low-risk treatment, digital-therapeutic, we are enrolling for a virtual clinical trial and anyone in the United States can enroll [at nightware.com],” CEO Grady Hannah said Wednesday.

Hannah said Nightware has been running on several-hundred thousand in invested capital since 2017 and that the app was invented by a computer science graduate student in 2016.

“[Breakthrough status] is a really nice thing…because we have, internally, had a lot of discussions around the reasons why we thought this was a significant and important advance in medical technology,” Dr. Daniel Karlin, chief medical officer at NightWare, told MobiHealthNews. “We’re engaged with the agency in trying to generate a body of evidence that doesn’t just show efficacy, but shows efficacy versus sham, versus placebo … and we’re doing it quickly because among veterans with PTSD, there’s a suicide per hour. We believe that this may reduce suicide, so we have an obligation to get this to folks as fast as we can.”

NightWare’s product is an app for the Apple watch that uses the device’s biometric sensors to monitor the sleeping wearer’s heart rate and movement, he said. By the way, this is the second time in six months that Trump has pulled this shit. Folks may remember when he did it last December, starting a meeting with Nancy and Chuck by asking up front if they’d ever agree to give him funding for his wall. They said no, he threw a tantrum, and the shutdown continued forward.

Folks may also remember that, when it all ended, he got exactly “zero” of what he demanded and ended up with the blame for the shutdown.

except for misdirection or distraction

as i said upthread, mazers and deutche are gonna give over the stuff, then he likely sues them both - and loses both too
i have no doubt they’ve both already notified their insurance carriers

they are both big firms
and winning is nice of course
my experience is it’s not enough to win
best practice is to not get sued in the first place
so when you accept clients, choose those who arent likely to drag you into lawsuits directly or indirectly.

its looking more and more (to me) like he never thought he would win - it was all just a grift and he would later some how monetize and capitalize on ‘maga’

then at the last minute when the tide turned, what the heck, i’m smarter than all of them - i can do this

then he figured he could do whatever he wanted, so he started running as fast as he could, get as much as he could and then eventually bail - whether that meant resign, impeachment, lose re-election or whatever

- legitimate grounds? none. he’ll do it anyway (look how totally badly both decisions went against them this week)
- definitely lawyer-them-to-death
- confidentiality wont work because there is no expectation, in fact, dealing with banks and accounting firms there is an understanding that could be compelled to turn your info over to someone else via subpoena or even less.
- most likely - it’ll be the damage that the release caused. he’ll claim they caused it by not ‘resisting’ somehow

and he’ll lose. and if they’re lucky they’ll get costs

If Trump is going to start slinging around lawsuits left and right I hope his lawyers are getting themselves paid in advance. And if he’s trying to use the public dime to pay for the defense I wonder if a post-presidential lawsuit will come along attempting to regain those costs from my (probably by then worthless) estate. Or at least something that can extract money from the speaking fees he’ll get from his worshipers.
