Interesting piece here on how social media, once thought to be a force for liberating people, has morphed into a democracy-destroying hellscape:

…the entire underlying business model of Facebook is the problem. The drive of all these social media platforms has been towards growth. More users. More time spent. More attention paid. More clicks, swipes, likes, comments, shares.

Growth. Scale. Velocity. Hockey-stick-like lines on innumerable PowerPoint slides.

It turns out that the vision the techno-hippies in the Bay Area had when laying the foundations of the internet was deeply flawed. Bringing all of humanity together under one roof, and removing all institutional control does not lead to Utopia.

There is going to have to be a fundamental shift in the way that major media companies and publishers act — and yes, Facebook, Twitter, Google, Amazon, et al., are being forced to wake up and confront the fact that they are now publishers. They can no longer pretend that they are just the “Town Square” where they have no responsibility for what goes on there.

“The drive of all these social media platforms has been towards growth. More users. More time spent. More attention paid. More clicks, swipes, likes, comments, shares.”

Because if they don’t do this their fucking stock tanks. Limitless growth is never a sustainable thing and yet our stock market seems to be based on the notion that it is.

This leads to a lot of rushed short term solutions that don’t do a damn thing for long term, systemic problems.

The overall theme of social media is growth leads to deficits, deficits leads to seeking corporate money, and corporate money leads to commercialization. Twitter, Facebook, Google, the list goes on and on. All these started out with noble intentions and goals, but the need to secure funding for what were effectively “free” services led to greed and corruption.

If you’re not paying for something you are using, you’re not the customer, you’re the product.

Much like radio and television (originally, at least) being a means of advertising at its core, that’s what social media was. Then they realized that data was much more profitable.

I really hate “MSM” takes like this: not that Toobin is wrong, per se, but that framing it in personal terms like “a major victory for Nancy Pelosi” lowers it, IMO, to the level of a schoolyard spat, or a personal vendetta. What this is a “major victory” for is a victory for the Constitution and the Rule of Law, vs high-handed Executive autocracy. But I guess putting it that way is thought too difficult for CNN’s audience to grasp….

The House Financial Services Committee has obtained documents from two financial institutions relating to their dealings with the Trump Organization, according to NBC News.

TD Bank and Wells Fargo, two of nine institutions subpoenaed by the House panel, have complied, according to the news outlet, with Wells Fargo providing a few thousand requested documents and TD Bank providing a smaller amount, according to NBC, citing a source who had seen the documents.

Hi. Jumping in and right back out.

Mile 1,560: Utica, NY. On the way to Massachusetts.

Yesterday was a cluster at the Port Huron/Sarnia border crossing. ICE (no you’re not police even if you print that on your jackets) was inspecting every car after the Blue Water Bridge toll booth headed to Canada.

They waved my wife and me through (I have no idea why we got special treatment, because everyone else was getting the business).

On the other side of the bridge, Canada’s border services decided we needed to go in and talk to Immigration Services. (Canada was pretty much letting everyone through after clearing customs. Not us.)

I have no idea why Canada decided we needed special treatment. We cooled our heels in Immigration for two hours. They asked my wife and me separately a whole host of questions such as “what states have you lived in,” “how do you know each other when her passport says she was born in Missouri and yours says you were born in Michigan,” &c.

For me they reserved “what states have you lived in.” (I really wanted to snark on which ones I haven’t would be shorter, but it is not wise to mess with Customs in any country.)

They also wanted to know from me if I was planning on staying in Canada permanently (biting my tongue again on “why are you offering”).

My wife was questioned closely on why I take the medications I do, but they didn’t ask me about that.

All that made us late for a meetup in London with two Ontario Wonketteers we’d planned the day before … that went okay though.

Today, crossing the border from the QEW into the USA, US Customs had no questions (though they were backing up traffic into Ontario) other than to ask if I’d entered Canada at Sarnia.

So now we’re decompressing.

Thanks for the heads up about the BWB. We’re going to Toronto next week and we like to enter Canada over the BWB. There was a big meth bust there last week.

The only time I had trouble at the border was when they asked if I had anything to declare, and said I was bringing an iPad for my grandson, another time a case of wine, and for being honest I had to pay a heavy tax on those items! They sell kosher wine at the duty free now.

Years ago, my mother warned me “Never use the ‘Bilingual’ customs booth!” but I always do and they are very nice and speak perfect English (and perfect French too I assume)

I have had some weird experiences going through customs in Israel. They always ask where did I learn to speak Hebrew, even though I am speaking to them in English!

The weirdest customs experience was with my son about 14 years ago. We had a family get-together at my house, and 2 of my sons (1 from NY, 1 living in Moscow at the time) decided to accompany their brother part of the way to Toronto. They got into Canada with no problem, visited the Miner Bird Sanctuary, then he went home to Toronto and they headed for the US.

My son from Moscow was in the car with his wife, who was in the U.S. on a tourist visa, and their kids who had Israeli and U.S. passports.

My son from NY was waved through but he saw his brother being pulled over so he decided to wait for him.

They cooled their heels in (United States) immigration for a couple of hours, the kids got bored and started to run around and make noise. The customs people said “Please get your kids under control!” and my son is like “You invited us to stay in here.”

After more questions, it turned out that my daughter in law was in Canada ILLEGALLY (because her Israeli passport tourist visa was only for the U.S.) but somehow nobody mentioned this when they entered Canada in the first place. And my son is like, “But it’s OK because we are coming back to the U.S.!” and the immigration were like “No it’s not OK because she violated her visa and we can’t let her back into the U.S.!”

At that point my DIL was trying to stay brave but the little girls both started crying hysterically.

They finally got home well past midnight. Apparently my son’s wife had to apply for a new visa, she filled out the forms and it was issued on the spot, and then told not to leave the U.S. again until the return trip to Moscow.

We’ve never gotten any trouble at the Port of Raymond at the Montana/Saskatchewan border.

Last year when we crossed from Sarnia to Port Huron, the American customs official just looked at my Gold Star Family license plate, said “thank you for your service” (that is not about my service but I wasn’t going to correct him) then waved us through. That was it. No questions about tobacco or alcohol, &c.

Every time we come over the border from Saskatchewan, they ask us if we’re carrying any guns. (From a highly restrictive country into Montana, in a Smart car. That’s not the way to smuggle guns.)

As often as you cross… no NEXUS card? I love mine. On this side, it even gives me access to a NEXUS-only bridge at Niagara Falls. Best hundred bucks I’ve ever spent.

I remember the days when you only needed your drivers license. That $100 seems like a good way to extract money from people who cross the border a lot. And how does a NEXUS card prevent someone from doing something criminal in the first place?

I saw people going through the NEXUS lanes in Niagara Falls, and it was hand over a card, a couple seconds later hand it back, then through Customs. Seems like a good thing for a smuggler to have.

I remember Grandma Bacon telling me about Harding’s death and all the whispers that he really committed suicide because of the Teapot Dome scandal.

I’m getting a creepy feeling that Trump may go the Harding route when New York State releases his state tax returns and they prove what a third rate con artist he is!

I really hope not. Harding was content to take himself out even if he didn’t actually die of a natural heart attack. Trump believes that a world without him isn’t worth living in for anyone and is likely to call the nuclear thunder on us either directly or via attacking someplace he knows will retaliate.

The strangest Customs issue I ever had was crossing the border between Gibraltar and Spain (when I was stationed there, before the EU removed border controls).

I once bought a power supply for my ham radio in Gibraltar. Crossing back into Spain, I declared it at the border, and the official sent me into the customs house.

They asked to see the power supply and my passport. When I handed across my passport, the inspector asked if I was stationed in Rota (yes). He said “we like Americans; for you no duty.”

Grabbed my box and headed for the car before someone changed their minds.

There’s a background check involved as part of the application process, and they can still pull you aside for an additional search if they think there’s a reason to do so.

And it carries a stiff penalty if you break the rules - your card is instantly revoked.

It’s really designed for commuters, and the assumption is they won’t endanger the convenience of the easy daily crossing by trying anything illegal.

Plus it comes with TSA Precheck and Global Entry, each of which costs almost as much as Nexus by itself. And the $100 is for ten years.

I don’t go to Canada (or anywhere else) enough to get such a card. I would think my passport would do the same thing (particularly with the embedded electronic chip in it) and it has the same penalty (you can have it revoked on the spot if you violate the rules).

When you pull up at the border with your passport, it’s my understanding/wild-asseed guess that while the border guard is asking you whatever she’s asking you, her computer screen is filling up with whatever background data can quickly be assembled on you.

The questions she’s asking you aren’t because she doesn’t know the answer… it’s because she wants to see if your answer matches what they already know.

I assume there are flags that go up if you’re an “unusual” traveler… not from a border state, your plate hasn’t been registered in the system on previous trips, maybe the radiation detector or the dogs pick up something.

The Nexus card effectively does those checks for them before you ever get to the border… it’s part of the “trusted traveler” system that tells them “don’t worry about this guy, he’s already passed the basic checks,” so they let you through faster and (in theory) can focus more resources on more serious threats.

Even with the chip in it, the passport just says “this is who this person is, and his citizenship.” It doesn’t come with the same background checks and overt acknowledgement of what the rules are that the Nexus card brings.

Frakes has been hella busy directing after the ST: TNG movies ended (and even beforehand, starting in the middle of TNG’s run, including some of the best episodes of TNG and DS9); just in the past two years or so, he’s directed episodes of The Librarians, ST: Discovery and The Orville, and is slated to direct episodes for ST: Picard later this year.

Burton hasn’t had anywhere near the same directing run Frakes has had post-ST, though, of the two, Burton is the only one to direct episodes of all of the ST series from TNG to Enterprise.

Speaking of WTFery… watching MasterChef Australia, which is superior for sure to the US version, but can still be burdened with their own bit of cultural baggage… and it’s a street food challenge with three teams.

One of the teams is assigned “Mexican”. So the team produces among other things tacos, specifically lamb tacos. And judge Matt Preston raves on about how it’s like visiting Mexico and eating on the street.

Well, excuse me, but as someone who has actually ordered tacos from street vendors in Mexico, the idea of a lamb taco is just weird.

It seems like Australians always pick lamb as their go-to meat… I guess that’s what they raise most of down there… but when I’ve ordered tacos off the street in Mexico they are pork. Possibly pulled beef…. and if you’re on the west side by the sea you can also get fish.

But not lamb.

Not that you can’t find lamb in Mexico, but it’s not the meat of choice. It just isn’t.

But for the sake of Australian television, lamb is “Mexican”.

Reality TV shows are such works.

The Pentagon on Thursday will present plans to the White House to send up to 10,000 more troops to the Middle East, in a move to beef up defenses against potential Iranian threats, U.S. officials said Wednesday.

The officials said no final decision has been made yet, and it’s not clear if the White House would approve sending all or just some of the requested forces. Officials said the move is not in response to any new threat from Iran, but is aimed at reinforcing security in the region. They said the troops would be defensive forces, and the discussions include additional Patriot missile batteries, more ships and increased efforts to monitor Iran.

Routine on the one hand - presenting plans, that is - but worrying on the other hand. Trump is feeling the walls closing in and he’s becoming increasingly frantic for something to distract the public from his imploding presidency.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. We’re likely to be under severe storm watches this afternoon as the storms that have ravaged the Midwest make their way East. So far, it looks like the worst of the weather will remain off to the West of the NYC metro, but that doesn’t mean we’re off the hook. If the sun comes out for any extended period today, it’ll add to the energy in the atmosphere, and it’ll increase the chances of bad weather as the front approaches.

Watching some of those videos and radar loops makes me think of the scene from Twister at the drive-in, the way you can’t see anything out there, right until the lightning illuminates the storm.

Wow. Scary stuff.

Stern also thinks Trump wasn’t really serious when he entered the campaign, that it was a gimmick to try to get a raise for Apprentice contract negotiations.

That is what I thought at the time, and pretty much still think. Problem is Trump couldn’t restrain his inner Joffrey Baratheon.

I still attribute a lot of this to the election being a long way off, and we need to get through the summer, but the Biden campaign being the “Cheesecake Factory” candidate is pretty spot on, especially the part where lots of people just want to rest: balloon-juice.com. My fear is that that won’t be enough to retake the Senate, but that will also depend more on local candidates like 2018.

I’d totally agree with that assessment. Biden is the guy that people who want to believe can get us back to “normal.” Whether that’s getting a functioning gov’t that fixes problems…or one where the Dem in the White House has to deal with constant BS from Congressional Repubs, it’s hard to say. But my worry is Biden is in danger of becoming this election’s John Kerry, i.e. the “safe” alternative to the “crazies” in the party who ends up satisfying nobody because he has to make too many compromises in the hopes of building a winning coalition.

Couldn’t pass an ACA alternative, didn’t touch infrastructure, and only got tax cuts through by the skin of their teeth. Oh, and crammed through a thoroughly unpopular SCOTUS pick that is going to end up costing the party at least one seat if not more.

They really are gambling on the voters deciding that, no matter how good things may be going, Trump’s crimes are so heinous that he needs to be voted out of office. This was not a winning strategy in ‘04 and it’s not one now. If the leadership feels he’s committed crimes, they need to impeach him and make their best case. All in a day’s work for Mnuchin. Depriving people of their homes and their jobs is the price one must pay to help the wealthy build their fortune. Remember the ACA? Remember how doing the right thing cost Democrats the House and ultimately the Senate?

Politics isn’t like medicine or mechanics. The outcome of a series of good choices doesn’t guarantee that you will end up in the right place, or that people will even recognize that you were trying to get to the right place. You can be punished for doing the right thing. And Trump winning reelection would be far more punishment than not. And do you know how far “I was proven innocent because the Senate didn’t convict” would carry?

trump has weaponized pardons

not only in the teasing, flaunting and throwing them around

these people are almost all obviously guilty

he’s not ‘righting wrongs’ committed by the judiciary - correcting some miscarriage of justice.

he’s showing that non-ambiguous actual violations of law will be treated with leniency, if not an outright get-out-of-jail-free card.

and he’s getting them off so they dont have to be accountable in any way for what they did

this was never the point of pardons
personal responsibility my ass

trump campaigned for years on the ridiculous idea he would build a wall and mexico would pay for it, somehow we didn’t get a lot of concern from the media as to what actual policy was there. even in the presidency, he still can’t articulate the “how” and its no biggie.

I will repeat this again: if he had really meant it as more than a symbol, slogan and rallying cry, he would have appointed a planning commission to produce design and engineering studies, legal and environmental impact statements, a budget and a proposed timetable.

But Mr Master Planner and Builder has done no such thing, nor is he about to.

If anything, Nixon’s crimes were seen even far worse in retrospect, as the election wasn’t even close and so he looked like a fool for engaging in illegal acts to bring down a candidate who was doing plenty to destroy his own campaign. Hell, Nixon was more convincing when the argument was made that the Dems were only pursuing him for those crimes because they were bitter over losing the election.

And he suffered from the same issue that Trump does, having fair to average polling on the issues while being personally reviled. We take it for granted today that the whole country hated him, but they were actually fairly happy with the job he was doing. Even today, we credit him for signing off on legislation that Republicans today hate and revile him for.

It seemed rather implied for the longest time that Mueller was the guy who had to deliver. Hell, even now, the House Dems seem to be gambling big on his testimony (if it ever happens) will be the bombshell needed to justify going forward with impeachment. Thankfully, I doubt the banks he’s up to his eyeballs in debt to will be as wary to take him to court.

Let’s be honest, the incremental stuff in recent days has been the exception rather than the rule. vanityfair.com
FORECLOSING ON A 90-YEAR-OLD WOMAN OVER 27 CENTS AND OTHER HEARTWARMING TALES FROM STEVEN MNUCHIN’S DAYS AT ONEWEST

Here, some highlights of Mnuchin’s company’s work:

Changing the locks on Leslie Parks’s Minneapolis house, during a blizzard.

Allegedly refusing to negotiate with Greg Horoski and his wife, Diane Yano-Horoski, when the couple fell behind on payments due to Horoski getting sick; treating them, in the words of Judge Jeffrey Spinner, to “mortifying abuse”; and generally acting in a manner that was not only “inequitable, unconscionable, vexatious and opprobrious” but also “harsh, repugnant, shocking and repulsive.” (OneWest commented at the time, “We respectfully disagree with the lower court’s unprecedented ruling,” which wiped out the $525,000 the couple owed in mortgage payments. It also claimed it had been “extremely active in working with consumers on home loan modifications through the Obama administration’s Home Affordable Modification Program and other loan modification initiatives.”)

Allegedly sending a homeowner’s name to a debt collector who proceeded to “call her 81 times in a single day.”

And the pièce de résistance: reportedly foreclosing on a 90-year-old woman, Ossie Lofton, who owed the bank 30 cents but sent a check for 3 cents.

History question: Would you say Johnson’s impeachment but no conviction helped, hurt, or did nothing to the Republican cause of fixing America after the Civil War?

I’d go with “no effect” - Andrew Johnson was a Democrat, and so, in Reconstruction-Era politics, a virtual leper: he also had an amazing gift of alienating people, which he seems to have used mainly on those who might be of help to him. The Republicans of the time were solidly unified, and did their best to render Johnson as irrelevant as the system would allow, and by the time his impeachment trial rolled around, was basically a lame duck in any case.
However, Johnson’s attitudes towards Reconstruction were steeped in attitudes that even by the standards of the time were poisonously racist, and overly sensitive to the considerations of ex-Confederates vs. any other issues.
Old Andy seems to have quite OK with racism and slavery: it was only the “secession” bit that tripped his breakers.

It’s going to have to be something more serious than illegal campaign contributions to payoff mistresses to get the public on our side. Massive financial irregularities especially if they show that Trump has a negative net worth would be a start. More on his deference to Russia would be a plus. I wonder if Mueller failed to investigate Trump’s finances because of Trump’s threats about this being off-limits, with perhaps a follow-up order from Rosenstein on what was permissible.

Unfortunately it may be a majority of voters who will think this is overreach, unless the case is rock solid; and even then it can fail due to the efforts by the criminals who make up the GOP.

Mueller construed his mandate very, very narrowly. SDNY is looking at some of this stuff, we know. Also, the obstruction and witness tampering are real damned in-your-face stuff that needs to be put before the public in hearings. I have high blood pressure but it’s under control. Weight really is way too high, going to have more pee pill to help with that. Oh and add a cholesterol pill. meh.

Get outside and find that while my bicycle is still there, some stole the milk crate I’d rigged as a grocery carrier. Many cuss words were thought. Since I’d been fasting, I rode to my favorite greasy spoon and indulged there. I then stopped at the liquor store on the way home and discovered they no longer carry 750ml bottles of my preferred cheap whiskey so I splurged again and got a liter of Famous Grouse. Screw it.

Updates on the storms that swept through the Midwest last night/this morning.

weather.com

(be aware that there’s video that autoplays with annoying commercial).

There’s reports that a dam on the Arkansas River in Oklahoma is imperiled due to runaway barges.

Two wayward barges that had been stuck on a rock jetty in the flooded Arkansas River broke loose again Thursday morning and were floating toward a dam north of Webber Falls, Oklahoma.

Interstate 40 and Highway 64 are closed because of the threat from the barges. On May 26, 2002, 14 people died after two barges rammed a pier on the bridge, bringing down a 500-foot-long section of the interstate.

Overnight, the town’s Facebook page urged residents to “evacuate Webbers Falls immediately” and stated that the barges had the potential to hit Lock and Dam 16. “If the dam breaks it will be catastrophic!! Leave now!!”

A mandatory evacuation order was issued for the town about 5 p.m. CDT Wednesday as waters from the Arkansas River continued to rise.

“This is a life-threatening situation,” officials posted on the town’s Facebook page. “If you choose to stay you are doing so at your own risk. If you choose to stay we advise you write your name and personal information on your arm in permanent marker. Please be safe!”

The community of about 600 residents is 70 miles southeast of Tulsa.

The barge situation is just another storyline in the days long siege of severe storms that have spawned deadly tornadoes are also causing flooding that has destroyed at least five homes and forced residents to evacuate.

Or maybe that’s part of the counter-intelligence part of the investigation, which we haven’t seen. Even the relevant congressional committees are only getting it next week, and who knows if they’ll be able to release it.

Crazy week at work - I’ve got 39.5 hours since Sunday and I’m nearly the lowest hours person there - we changed from a Comfort Suites franchise to a Holiday Inn Express and Suites on 00:01 Tuesday. It’s a long term mistake but I’m not the owner so…

Finally getting Today and Friday off, but I had a VA doctor’s appointment at the local clinic. Med check and labs. I am told i am diabetic but my blood numbers are perfect.

Screw it.

But I am home, out of the rain and no appointments or anything else for the rest of the day. I have good ale and better scotch and DE just dropped Update 25: The Jovian Concord for Warframe so I will soon be a well lubricated Tenno doing mean things to the Corpus and the Grineer with my Excalibur and Loki Prime.

It’s a great day to be alive…

These were Marines…. no cute little white suits. *wink*

The Marines were either in their camo or a couple were there in their dress uniforms. Sorry, no pictures of them. Maybe if I spot them later, I’ll take some shots.

Facebook removed more than 3 billion fake accounts from October to March, twice as many as the previous 6 months. The increase shows the challenges faced in removing accounts created by computers to spread spam, fake news and other objectionable material

They are easier to spread than to kill.

And as long as people still equate an Internet presence with a real person or organization behind it, they will continue to proliferate like plague virus.

re: #367 FormerDirtDart 🍕🐀

It’s not a challenge to remove fake accounts.

It’s a challenge not to ban white nationalists and white supremacists on Twitter and Facebook because those views are virtually indistinguishable from the GOP - and that’s why the problem persists.

It’s really easy to ban Nazis when they use their logo feces all over the place.
It’s real easy to ban jihadis when they’re spewing their craziness.

But it’s real hard when Trump and GOP’s tweets/statements touting white supremacist views are indistinguishable from the KKK position.

re: #242 Belafon

It’s not Trump that’s the issue here. It’s McConnell and the Senate Republicans who won’t vote to impeach him no matter how crooked he is. That’s where the damage comes from.

Which is also the major indicator that the rot in the GOP goes very deep and that removing Trump is only the first step is a long-term large scale “fix” that is probably going to end up needing to rip that party down to bedrock to start over. Along with some serious work on vote suppression, gerrymanders, campaign finance reform, oversight, and putting in some meaningful penalties for campaign and election violations. (Having the FEC fine you *after* you’ve cheated and won the election is pretty pathetic given that it doesn’t change the result of the election at all.)

Just checked in with the fever swamp at Free Republic. Today’s rants center on Ihlan Omar, AOC, and Pelosi, with Jussie Smollett making a strong comeback. Mayor Pete also rates a couple of attacks that make up in venom and hysteria what they lack in numbers. There are a number of things I like about Buttigieg, but the main one is that he sends the Deplorables into frothing, bug-eyed, carpet-biting fits of rage just by existing.

I’m a HUGE Trekker/Picard Fan and I’m also stoked to get something that is NOT a prequel.

I’m hoping for some other TNG characters to make an appearance but I don’t want them to go overboard. Riker and Dr. Crusher would be at the top of my list to appear because of their past history with Picard. Data couldn’t because Spiner is too old now (though I suppose they could de-age him).

I remember the Clinton impeachment and it didn’t hurt the GOP, contrary to current opinion. I also happen to know that the Nixon impeachment hearings started in a far deeper hole for the Dems. Nixon was popular and the votes were not there in the Senate…until the public hearings burned everything down.

Trump will claim exoneration if he is impeached and he will claim exoneration if he is not impeached. It is time to stop being f*cking afraid of doing the right thing and just do it.

I respect your perspective. My life is an example of how doing “the right thing” is punished, not rewarded, and the malcreants skate free and enriched. Not a fan of “the right thing”.

You know what is also dependent on such? Taking up and passing legislation so that it might appear on the Oval Office’s desk. Yet it’s pretty much a guarantee that 95% or more of the legislation that the House passes between now and 2021 will never get a fair shake in the Senate. Yet we praise her and the House Dems for continuing to take up bills and vote upon them, knowing they’ll never go anywhere in the Senate because of the political damage we feel Senate Repubs will suffer.

This is a specious argument.

None of those bills have any real value outside of political wonks.
