Well, they HAD been required to either be selective or accept government funding, not both. That ended a week ago, and now they can have the taxpayer dollars and still turn away or even actively destroy abominations.

But people have a problem with Colin Kaepernick kneeling in protest.

You can see why they attack Kaepernick so strongly. He’s pointing out their bad behaviour, so unless he’s completely wrong, then they are bad people.

And no-one likes to think of themselves as bad, so of course it’s Kaepernick that’s the problem here.

I am concerned, but I trust Pelosi.

Pelosi takes her go-slow message on impeachment to a tough crowd — her own state’s Democrats

Speaker Nancy Pelosi’sreluctance to begin the gears grinding on an impeachment investigation has put her at odds with the Democrats’ activist base. On Saturday, she took that argument to a tough and skeptical audience — a party convention in her own deeply blue home state.

Pelosi pledged, before 3,400 delegates at the Moscone Convention Center, to expose “the full extent of the president’s wrongdoing and corruption.” But as she stressed how the investigation will proceed under ordinary legislative channels, through six different House committees, the speaker was greeted with shouts of “Impeach! Impeach!” Some in the audience also waved placards bearing the same message.

“This is like coming home for me,” she joked.

The cheers began again, however, when she suggested that the door to impeachment has not been entirely shut: “We will go where the facts lead us. We will insist on the truth. We will build on an ironclad case to act, because in the United States of America, no one is above the law — not even the president of the united states — and President Trump will be held accountable for his actions.”

I can appreciate that. And you’re a better person than me for being more tolerant.

That said, I think there’s a difference between learning a particular elective procedure and denying health care in general. I believe that we all have the basic, fundamental right to arrange our own lives as we best see fit. That includes the right to worship or not, however one may chose. But when someone attempts to justify denying someone else fundamental rights because their own religious views say they should - I draw a line there.

Another, more silly but simple way of explaining it is that I have every right to walk down the street swinging my arms from side to side. But that right ends not only if I were to hit someone (that is the tort of battery), but if I were to swing my arms in a way to cause that other person to move in order to avoid me (that is the tort of assault).

No person’s rights extend so far as to interfere with another person’s rights. Hell, that’s ultimately what the law is about.

I’d actually comply, because I, personally, know how to own and operate a gun and how to keep a gun safely in the house without endangering fishspawn. I would, however, protest the EVER-LOVING FUCK out of that law because there are at least 100 million people in this country that should NOT own guns.

He’s confusing the issues, probably deliberately. Posing with enemy dead and putting the photos online violates the laws of war and the rules of engagement. Calling in artillery on a valid military target, even when it’s “hugging” non-combatants—far less likely to be.

NO! At least in the short term. Peak runoff won’t happen for another week or two, depending on how warm it gets. The snow is water storage, and has made the almost decade long drought disappear in a matter of months. Sure, we had to endure landscape-changing avalanches everywhere in early March, and we never really had a spring to being with this year, I’ll take it. It’s water.

134
teleskiguy  Jun 1, 2019 • 8:54:14pm

On Groundhog Day this year the groundhog predicted an early spring, first time in a long time, I’m told.

Spring never came in the Rockies. Though I wasn’t there for it (I was in Santa Fe, where it was windy as fuck) it snowed at my house this last Sunday.

The pepper and tomato plants I bought on Mother’s Day are still alive, thankfully. And it’s finally starting to warm up around here, it got into the 60s today!

Just snow inundation, legendary skiing for the few that can get to it, blam, blam, blam, like seven straight winters of this shit. Seven spring runoff cycles with that much snow in the headwaters, that could destroy Glen Canyon Dam.

If you’re a business generally open to the public then you must serve all the public. It’s really not difficult to understand. I always laugh when I see those “we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone” signs, because, widely speaking, that right doesn’t exist.

Yes, if someone is being rude or harassing to staff or customers, you can remove them. But the whole point of public accommodations laws is that you sell to everyone or you sell to no one.

I am not amazed, just frustrated, every time I watch a sci-fi movie (that is pretending to be a serious sci-fi work and not fantasy) where the plots points include items that are so obviously not part of reality, as in basic physics.

So often in off hand remarks, gravity is used as something that is obvious… yet in these movies it appears gravity is not obvious.

Example: meteor moving to hit ground, jets intercept and blow it up with a sidewinder missile.

Why that really doesn’t work: if a solid (stone, metal) meteor has a mass of say a thousand metric tons, blowing up a sidewinder on its surface still results in a thousand metric tons coming down at the same terminal velocity, but now simply in a few chunks.

Example: the moon cracks up because its hit by an asteroid.

Why that doesn’t really work: the reason the moon is a sphere in the first place is that its own mass is pulling on itself in three dimensions. Just whacking it a bit with an asteroid doesn’t change that fact. The moon is still just a mass sufficient to pull itself into a sphere. It won’t crack in two. Any asteroid which can shatter the moon has to be big enough that the kinetic energy involved will also melt the masses and they will end up into many small bits and pieces.

These are not hard things.

The presence of nerd Internet interest groups has been helping raise the bar on such things. Remember when WW2 movies used surplus US army tanks with a German cross slapped onto them presented as Tigers?

Like sticking a Mercedes star on an old Dodge Dart and telling us it is an SLK roadster…

Nowadays you gotta use a vehicle that is at least altered enough to resemble the original, or CGI something into place.

WaPo Opinion: When will the Republican silence on Trump end?

William S. Cohen is a former Republican congressman, senator and defense secretary who served on the House Judiciary Committee in 1974 during the Watergate impeachment inquiry.

“Now that Robert S. Mueller III has broken months of silence, declined informal invitations to appear before Congress and said that his 448-page report “is my testimony,” it now falls to lawmakers to take the next steps, if any, in the matter of President Trump. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has been hesitant to initiate impeachment proceedings against Trump. Her caution is well placed. …

“But Congress should not turn away from the central issue of whether Trump has, in word and deed, engaged in conduct that is fundamentally inconsistent with, and antithetical to, the highest office in the land.”

By the time they get around to passing that law, they will have stripped women of all their rights. So, the law will not apply to me. They’ll probably pass a law making it illegal for me to read. So, there’s that. Welcome to the Republic of Gilead. It’s where Republicans are heading.

You can see why they attack Kaepernick so strongly. He’s pointing out their bad behaviour, so unless he’s completely wrong, then they are bad people.

And no-one likes to think of themselves as bad, so of course it’s Kaepernick that’s the problem here.

The police have been brutalizing and killing unarmed Black people long before Kaepernick started protesting. It’s a wonder that have been getting away with it for so long but I guess the majority is okay so nothing changes.

I’m tired of conservatives justifying putting immigrant babies in gulags, by shouting out justice for Katie Steinle, Jamiel Shaw, or other Angel Families. Why don’t they get it through their thick skulls and limited brain cells, these babies didn’t kill anyone! The response I always get is “they won’t murder innocent Americans in the future,” like we’re actually living in a “Minority Report” reality. Animals, all of them! They’re f*ckin’ animals!

Why would anyone with common sense care about the sexual orientation of someone they aren’t planning on having a sexual relationship with?

Because they’re thinking that gay men are thinking about them the same way that they’re thinking about women. It’s projection.

I used to work in downtown Minneapolis and would walk around in the skyway system at lunch time. I’d really notice the way that oncoming men were mentally undressing the women walking in front of me. Sometimes I’d give the men the same look back, so just as they’d break off lusting after the woman in front of me, they’d meet my eye, and they’d get shook up. Maybe I was perpetuating stereotypes, but I got some enjoyment out of turning the tables on them.

I’m not quite that cynical. Between the crushing of Reconstruction and the post-WW2 civil rights movement, conditions for blacks in the former Confederacy (and elsewhere, but not so much) were… no need for details at this moment. Television didn’t start the movement or keep it going, but clubs and attack dogs in every living room surely got people’s attention — and put paid to the propaganda about “happy Negroes stirred up by carpetbaggers and communists.” (Something like that happened during the Civil War, too — slaves were well-treated and contented with their lot, according to southern whites preaching slavery up north, then Union soldiers marched to the south and saw what it really looked like. And the not-very-concerned-it’s-a-long-way-away crowd turned into abolitionists.)

That’s how they got away with lies about police brutality. People knew the nice cops on the beat around their homes, so they believed other people in uniforms over their victims. (The civil rights movement and the anti-Vietnam war protests put a dent in that for a while, but people forget. Or are too young to have seen it.) But now there are cell phones and video recorders everywhere, and the lies aren’t standing up so well. It’s still not going to be easy to change things, but momentum seems to be building.

Ferguson also showed us a systemic problem: local DA’s and prosecutors are used to working with law enforcement to obtain indictments and convictions, they are ill-disposed to want to bring charges against law enforcement officers.

Yup!

It seemed to me that CNN was trying to scoop up audience from all spectrums. When it was clear that the right wing was locked down by Fox.

Add to this the implication that they concluded that Trump was good for the ‘news’ business. (And they were not alone in this.)

Her hallucinations and delusions in the days before her first admittance were frightening to experience vicariously - and everything seemed to trigger her, even Bob Ross “Joy of Painting” installments on Netflix.
