I generally avoid the concept of fashion and judging. But, even for me, the white tie is painful to look at.

That white tie jacket is pathetic. There is supposed to be a sliver of white shirt cuff showing from the sleeves. And the cut of the waist is just point-blank weird.

And of course, this is done in England. In front of the Royalty. Who basically defined the US formal dress code. I suspect he is viewed an insulting, ill mannered and ignorant rube. Again…

So… add fashion crimes to high crimes and misdemeanors.

The Queen has little political power but is in a unique position to make indirect statements.

When the dispute over Margaret Thatcher’s Council Tax was brewing, a levy for community services that was the same rate for everyone regardless of income (sometimes known as the “Poll Tax”, as many people went and de-registered so as to escape paying it), the Queen quietly paid the tax for all her domestic staff at her residences.

That was her very Queenly way of showing her displeasure with Thatcher. It worked and the Poll Tax fiasco was one of the things that led to her being run out of office.

Originally the set had opals, but these were removed and replaced with rubies.

Her Majesty also wore three large brooches covered in glittering diamonds.

One represented the Coldstream Guards, the oldest regular regiment in the British Army.

She also wore a badge with an mage of her father George V in military uniform.

haven’t found anything yet about the other two brooches.

There’s a trick when taking photos with camera that has a very powerful flash to point it away from the subjects, and instead at a convenient wall.

That allows the light to diffuse around the room, which is much more flattering for the subjects, that having the light go directly to them.

If there was a mirror on the wall at about head height, that would produce the effect of making Melania’s dress be more illuminated, with the outline of someones head.

I explained that my brother and I have an agreement to drive each other to the ER, because calling an ambulance is too expensive and not covered completely by insurance. Mile 3,275: De Soto, Iowa.

My wife and I spent the last two days in Chicago visiting with my mother and step-father.

My step-father is still in the hospital with the infection which has dogged him for months, segregated so his infection won’t spread. Visiting required putting on special clothes. He’s gone from 300+ pounds to 140 pounds in that time (at 6’2”). I will be surprised if he can rally from this.

My mother is already upside-down on medical bills. My step-father was a Chicago schoolteacher, but the deductibles on the insurance have already left my mother severely in debt which she cannot pay. Her debt is already as much as our house is worth. Neither my sister nor me have the kind of money it would take to bail them out.

We will be home either tomorrow evening or the day after.

This is actually a little surprising to me. When my dad had his aneurysm he spent over a month in the icu and the better part of a year in a long term care facility. I asked my mom if she needed any help with bills. She said between medicare and the tufts supplemental insurance she had almost no out of pocket expenses. Which is good because the copies of the bills they sent her added up to close to a million bucks.

I did have some banking difficulty on our trip to Massachusetts.

It seems a lot of banks, gas stations and such in Ontario and New England will only take bank ATM cards which have embedded chips.

My dinky bank in Nebraska doesn’t do that, so getting money as required during our trip was sometimes difficult (driving from bank to bank trying my card).

Oy. THAT was an … Interesting (////////////////!) night at the hotel. I’m done at 10. 15 minutes before, our most problem child guest gets home from her shift as a nurse and her door is open.

BOOM. In the room next door to the corporate inspector that arrived tonight. My head hurts.

Hour and a half later, she’s in a different room, feeling secure again, I and my coworker have turned in incident reports. I forgot to punch out (remembered as I walked in the house, I’ll correct it when I work again Thursday.) and I have a cold beer and full shot glass in front of me. I do not need nights like this.

Probably the last thing I fired was a pellet rifle or a .22 rim fire semi-automatic rifle up at his place.

* - Said rifle being my father’s before I was using it. A German KAR98 firing 8mm Mauser that has had the forestock cut down to lighten it and some other minor modifications. A good rifle for deer in western PA, but pretty much no historical value at this point.

Nice. I’ve never been, but the horror stories I’ve heard from people who work in the corrections system are enough to say that it’s not going to be pleasant for a coddled old codger like Manafort even if he’s in solitary for his own protection.

I’m surprised that they didn’t keep him in the Metropolitan Correctional Facility in Manhattan on the feds’ dime since he’s already serving time for the federal convictions and since it would reduce the travel between the court and the jail. Guess the feds wanted to show him how good he has it now.

Gorka and his followers want it to be true. That’s different from gullibility. They won’t back down from what they feel, and what they concluded, unless they get shamed.

Always…always…remember that these people operate with a completely different understanding of “truth” (epistemology) than everyone else. Things are “true” because treating them as “truth” has temporary utility for their self-gratification; when that utility expires then something else can be “true.” This is why ultimately, they’re nihilists and narcissists…they want to believe they believe things, but any time they take on a belief they hollow out the core premises that might restrict their selfishness and whim. The defining component of the US “right”—and in its most flagrant form, the open reactionaries—is this shallowness of thought. Ideas, ideologies, morals, trends exist to extract clout…and thus argument from authority…from.

ETA: hence the power of shame to make them back down, or at least stop articulating their specific claims. Since ideas only matter as units of clout, an idea that draws derision is quickly disavowed or concealed, ideally while claiming to have never actually held that idea (“I was just joking/being ironic/trolling/trying to trigger X”).

It’s an obvious parody account, but that doesn’t matter: they want to believe. The underlying assumption about society, culture that they project onto a tweet—they believe them to be True a priori, and are just seeking anything that’s homologous.

I visited Rikers once, just over 30 years ago. It was an absolutely delightful experience (not snark, it actually was truly delightful).

Fun fact: That was added in because Levar Burton was getting married and wanted to grow his beard back for his wedding. Since the writers thought it would be weird to have Geordi randomly growing a beard, they added the subplot where the other guys were growing them too.

Personally, I prefer the way I look with facial hair vs. clean shaven.

What you have to look at is the interaction, over time, between what they say they believe, what they do, and what they do when they’re caught between the former and the latter.

In the case of Gorka et al, I’d say the signs point to the second thing; they have no Higher Truth at all. They want power, and appropriate the thin exterior of belief—the buzzwords, the tropes, the rituals—to obtain power. Some are self-aware, and thus acting as cynics, some conflate narcissism and genuine belief…but many lack self-reflection and thus exist in a state of constant self-bullshitting. What the cynics and the bullshitters share is a recognize the utility of Higher Truth—big concepts like “God,” “family,” “freedom”—as a justification, but they in practice have no interest in actually defining those words, let alone generating a coherent worldview in which a big concept constrains their wants (or, more precisely, the emptiness inside them that requires a constant supply of new and varied forms of self-gratification).

(Also worth noting is that the line between cynicism, the vainglorious believers, and self-bullshitting is not a hard thing. Many people start off as one and then become the other.)

This is why—observing from the outside—there’s a fractal-like recursion across levels of magnification (from individuals to government to internationally) of exceptions to the inviolable rules that look like hypocrisy. They evoke big concepts and perform belief to the extent that they have utility in getting what they want. But any time a big concept might impose a constraint on their libertinism, they just ignore the big concept’s supposedly-solid rules, or claim the right to change the rules and declare the exceptions to the rules. This is also demonstrated in how often they argue—apply ideas in rhetoric—in bad faith.

What’s super fucked up is that fanatics, the cynics, and, erm, the full of shit go together really well, creating especially fucked-up social chimeras that channel their energy outwards, towards the common enemy…the rest of us human beings who stumble about trying to be good and trying to care about other people.

I don’t think anyone at the top of the US right is a True Believer in anything.

The coalition of ideologies all include a base assumption that there is a natural hierarchy—spiritual, economic, racial, national—but in practice have to keep spinning exceptions and inventing new rhetoric because their practice (of religion, business, identity, etc) does not match their words. Trump is the hylic grail of this trend.

In turn, the “base” are mostly people that enjoy power…specifically abuse of power. Hence why they’ve all taken to Trump so readily—he provides them with gratification…no shit I’m taking power/sex pants tingle type gratification…and that’s all they want. They’ve been trained by years and years of culture to view that (pants) feeling as The Only Thing That Matters, and as The Good. The reactionary right and fascists are even more explicit about the self-gratification, pants-feeling benefits of their ideology. This is why I keep talking about deSade: these people are caught up in some intense power/sex stuff where the precise point of the fantasy is that they get to hurt people with no limits. They may dress it up in different terminology…incel, Rapture-ready, militia…but that’s costuming. The central theme of gratuitous violence is stable.

This is the completely natural follow-up to themes present in the different wings of “conservative” culture in the US. All produce pornography culture product that reinforces that there exists individuals deserving of suffering and cruelty, such that one should feel good about participating in cruelty.

Much like with most serial killers, there’s so much less than meets the eye to these people.
