I generally avoid the concept of fashion and judging. But, even for me, the white tie is painful to look at.

That white tie jacket is pathetic. There is supposed to be a sliver of white shirt cuff showing from the sleeves. And the cut of the waist is just point-blank weird.

And of course, this is done in England. In front of the Royalty. Who basically defined the US formal dress code. I suspect he is viewed an insulting, ill mannered and ignorant rube. Again…

So… add fashion crimes to high crimes and misdemeanors.

The Queen has little political power but is in a unique position to make indirect statements.

When the dispute over Margaret Thatcher’s Council Tax was brewing, a levy for community services that was the same rate for everyone regardless of income (sometimes known as the “Poll Tax”, as many people went and de-registered so as to escape paying it), the Queen quietly paid the tax for all her domestic staff at her residences.

That was her very Queenly way of showing her displeasure with Thatcher. It worked and the Poll Tax fiasco was one of the things that led to her being run out of office.

The necklace was bought by Queen Victoria by Garrard in 1854.

Originally the set had opals, but these were removed and replaced with rubies.

Her Majesty also wore three large brooches covered in glittering diamonds.

One represented the Coldstream Guards, the oldest regular regiment in the British Army.

She also wore a badge with an mage of her father George V in military uniform.

haven’t found anything yet about the other two brooches.

re: #36 Hecuba’s daughter

What is it with Melania’s dress?

There’s a trick when taking photos with camera that has a very powerful flash to point it away from the subjects, and instead at a convenient wall.

That allows the light to diffuse around the room, which is much more flattering for the subjects, that having the light go directly to them.

If there was a mirror on the wall at about head height, that would produce the effect of making Melania’s dress be more illuminated, with the outline of someones head.

I could be wrong here, but I don’t think Melania’s gloves fit right either. All that rumpled glove along the lower arm and loose-looking top at her elbows? I don’t think so.
They just don’t do real formal, do they?

Her neckline was tasteless. Flames from boobs. Gloves do not save the Hollywood vixen look.

I read that article, and no, it doesn’t say “end of the world”, it says “end of human civilization.” I don’t consider the terms synonymous. Human civilization can end without this species necessarily going extinct (though one would assume that would happen sooner rather than later under the circumstances)

It wouldn’t surprise me.

Civilization, that is large, wealthy, multi-cultural and ethnic socio-political groupings, are a very recent thing and human beings aren’t adapted for it.

Humans were evolved to live in troops that wandered around hunting-gathering. All the ret of the stuff we’ve created since and including agriculture makes most of us nervous,

Mile 3,275: De Soto, Iowa.

My wife and I spent the last two days in Chicago visiting with my mother and step-father.

My step-father is still in the hospital with the infection which has dogged him for months, segregated so his infection won’t spread. Visiting required putting on special clothes. He’s gone from 300+ pounds to 140 pounds in that time (at 6’2”). I will be surprised if he can rally from this.

My mother is already upside-down on medical bills. My step-father was a Chicago schoolteacher, but the deductibles on the insurance have already left my mother severely in debt which she cannot pay. Her debt is already as much as our house is worth. Neither my sister nor me have the kind of money it would take to bail them out.

We will be home either tomorrow evening or the day after.

A diabetic not tending his special foot care requirements can usually expect to be gone before this time. I still feel very sorry for your mother, facing what she has. IMO, her only option is to let it pile up and then declare bankruptcy for health expense reasons.

This is actually a little surprising to me. When my dad had his aneurysm he spent over a month in the icu and the better part of a year in a long term care facility. I asked my mom if she needed any help with bills. She said between medicare and the tufts supplemental insurance she had almost no out of pocket expenses. Which is good because the copies of the bills they sent her added up to close to a million bucks.

It seems a lot of banks, gas stations and such in Ontario and New England will only take bank ATM cards which have embedded chips.

My dinky bank in Nebraska doesn’t do that, so getting money as required during our trip was sometimes difficult (driving from bank to bank trying my card).

Wonkette is being sued by Don Blankenship.

‘Elp! ‘Elp! Wonkette Being Sued By This 40-Millionaire!

Your Wonkette, despite many threats from bad and crazy people, has never actually been sued. Until today! According to Don Blankenship’s lawyers, we have conspired with Mitch McConnell, Fox Judge Andrew Napolitano, and Don Trump Jr., along with possibly hundreds of other news outlets both progressive and reactionary, to defame and libel and false-light-invasion-of-privacy Mr. Blankenship because one time, by accident, after he lost his race for the Republican West Virginia gubernatorial primary, we mistakenly referred to him as a felon, instead of carefully noting (as we had a dozen times previously) that he was convicted and spent a year in jail for misdemeanor conspiracy leading to the deaths of 29 miners in his employ. I pride myself on carefully weighing Wonkette’s terrible words and ensuring (with my 28 years in the news profession oh LORD I am forty-six years old) that everything we assert is both factual and fair. This was my fault as editor, nobody else’s, no ifs ands or buts.

If I could, though, I’d blame President Obama, just as Blankenship’s lawsuit blames him for those miners’ deaths.

Ms Widdecombe was condemned by Stephen Fry and Strictly Come Dancing dancer Robin Windsor - whose show Ms Widdecombe appeared on in 2010.

Labour MP Chris Bryant, who is gay, said: “Every time she adds a little bit of this poison to the well another gay teenager will be bullied or harm him or herself.”

Yet Nigel Farage today defended his new MEP and said “science may provide all sorts of answers that you and I don’t know about”.

In a clash on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, he said: “Ann Widdecombe is a devout Christian and there is nothing wrong with that in my opinion.

Trump UK visit: Labour calls US president ‘sexual predator’ and ‘racist’

It’s refreshing to see a political party willing to call Trump for what he is, in public.

Birds of a feather:

Nigel Farage DEFENDS Ann Widdecombe’s ‘poisonous’ claims about ‘gay conversion’

In a clash on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, he said: “Ann Widdecombe is a devout Christian and there is nothing wrong with that in my opinion.

And that is the ultimate defense for bigotry, racism, bullying and even sexual predation: “He/she is a devout Christian”.

Probably a good time for blather since no one is here. I got to thinking about my top 10 westerns…

1) High Noon
2) Shane
3) The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
4) The Searchers
5) A Fistful of Dollars
6) Stagecoach
7) For A Few Dollars More
8) True Grit (Wayne Version)
9) She Wore A Yellow Ribbon
10) The Magnificent Seven

I just wonder sometimes what that says about me…

For one that you appear to not like the modern westerns that much, or as much as older classics. Two, you appear to like the lone hero against odds stuff.

I concur with those being a real good set of movies. I’d probably have “Once Upon A Time in the West” and “The Professionals” on my equivalent. And I would definitely pull “True Grit” since I can’t stand the girl. (And the son in “Shane” annoys me as well.)

I really liked “The Outlaw Josie Wells” for its incredible equine stunt work (and I am not any sort of horsie fan) and for the way they handled their old Colt cap-and-ball pistols (an neither am I any sort of weapons aficionado, but I found it fascinating)

It was interesting from a historical standpoint to see what was essentially light cavalry re-invent pistol tactics and prefer firearms over swords. This preference also pops up in other places like Mosby’s Rangers in the east. And in the movie there is the explicit contrast between Josie using pistols and Captain Terrill (Redlegs) with his saber.

I think Eastwood had a thing for featuring different styles of older firearms. His character in “Pale Rider” has a revolver for instance that reloads by replacing the entire cylinder.

Although I am not a big fan of firearms, I even went down to our local gun club in Germany when they were having their Western Weekend and plunked down five euros so I could fire off a cap-and-ball pistol.

That was about eleven years ago. Last time I ever held or fired a weapon.

I have not been shooting in quite a while. Have not been hunting in well over 10 years and I think my deer rifle* is at my brother’s since I know I did not move it when I came to the Philadelphia area. Probably the last thing I fired was a pellet rifle or a .22 rim fire semi-automatic rifle up at his place.

* - Said rifle being my father’s before I was using it. A German KAR98 firing 8mm Mauser that has had the forestock cut down to lighten it and some other minor modifications. A good rifle for deer in western PA, but pretty much no historical value at this point.

What all the photos are showing me is that the Trumps trying to be elegant, sophisticated, and upper class is simply a massive failure since they appear to just not get it. And the British royals are too polite to openly laugh in their faces about it.

And it appears that the British public (and us on this side who are looking at it) are seeing the Trumps as a bunch of boorish wannabes on a family vacation at US taxpayer expense.*

* - I recall there being comments in the past about Trump wanting acceptance by the NYC society. The group he is interacting with now is a whole level past that, and not buying it either.

This is a man who called Meghan nasty (and then denied it) and also bragged about how he could have totally nailed Diana.

They have no reason to treat him with any personal respect, only to the degree accorded to him by his office of POTUS. And they are clearly keeping that to a minimum.

It’s been clear since forever that Trump doesn’t know what the fuck he’s talking about, including his supposed core knowledge base of real estate.

Trump knows only that something does or doesn’t benefit him personally and bluffs and bullshits his way through life.

NHS doesn’t affect trade one iota. It’s the UK’s health service. It’s also the key lie behind the Brexit vote.

The leavers wanted people to believe the lie that leaving the EU would somehow fund the NHS to the tune of hundreds of millions of pounds annually.

It was a lie, one that Boris Johnson is now being sued over in fact.

The entire Brexit was based on a lie, and the only ones who benefit from this shitshow are the Russians who get chaos among their European rivals and have Trump winging in with his own nonsensical takes for no extra cost.

So I was up near the East German border 30 years ago, watching the East German TV cover the uprisings. Using coverage released by the Chinese authorities, I can assume.

I noted that they never showed any banners or let you hear anything they were chanting, just shouting faces and a voice-over describing them as counter-revolutionaries and cop killers.

So, over at WeHuntedtheMammoth dot com, David Futrelle has a great post about the ebil geniubus, seb gorka (not a Ph.D.). Seems the gorkster was taken in by this parody Nintendo twitter account and riled up all the right whinging gamer assholes out in intertubes land.

[Embedded content]

Gorka and his followers want it to be true. That’s different from gullibility. They won’t back down from what they feel, and what they concluded, unless they get shamed.

Because if they treat it as true, then they get to feel heroic, and anyone they hate is that much more irredeemably depraved and thus deserving of no sympathy, no understanding, and no mercy.

Always…always…remember that these people operate with a completely different understanding of “truth” (epistemology) than everyone else. Things are “true” because treating them as “truth” has temporary utility for their self-gratification; when that utility expires then something else can be “true.” This is why ultimately, they’re nihilists and narcissists…they want to believe they believe things, but any time they take on a belief they hollow out the core premises that might restrict their selfishness and whim. The defining component of the US “right”—and in its most flagrant form, the open reactionaries—is this shallowness of thought. Ideas, ideologies, morals, trends exist to extract clout…and thus argument from authority…from.

ETA: hence the power of shame to make them back down, or at least stop articulating their specific claims. Since ideas only matter as units of clout, an idea that draws derision is quickly disavowed or concealed, ideally while claiming to have never actually held that idea (“I was just joking/being ironic/trolling/trying to trigger X”).

It’s an obvious parody account, but that doesn’t matter: they want to believe. The underlying assumption about society, culture that they project onto a tweet—they believe them to be True a priori, and are just seeking anything that’s homologous.

There was another problem: What separated many of these operators from their less-virile counterparts on the American homefront was their capacity for horrifying brutality. As the cultural zeal for beards caught on back home, Afghan tribal leaders were advising locals to avoid bearded troops and deal with the clean-shaven ones, who were empirically less likely to mistreat them. The bearded operators, they said, were the raucous, profane ones who raided your home, searched your women without dignity, and snatched people away to indefinite detentions in arbitrary arrests. Even this could become a point of pride for the operators, who thrived on instilling fear, like the early Seals in Vietnam who reveled in their hoary local reputations as supernatural “men with green faces” who came to take enemies in the night. But in counterinsurgency—that already-paradoxical quest to win hearts and minds at the ends of rifle muzzles—such draconian tactics moot the strategy.

Fun fact: That was added in because Levar Burton was getting married and wanted to grow his beard back for his wedding. Since the writers thought it would be weird to have Geordi randomly growing a beard, they added the subplot where the other guys were growing them too.

re: #348 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

When you are in possession of a “Higher Truth” then facts become malleable and fungible.

Fanatics—people who really believe something and rigidly operate within that framework—definitely exist, but many people who act out strong belief are in fact utterly full of shit. What you have to look at is the interaction, over time, between what they say they believe, what they do, and what they do when they’re caught between the former and the latter.

In the case of Gorka et al, I’d say the signs point to the second thing; they have no Higher Truth at all. They want power, and appropriate the thin exterior of belief—the buzzwords, the tropes, the rituals—to obtain power. Some are self-aware, and thus acting as cynics, some conflate narcissism and genuine belief…but many lack self-reflection and thus exist in a state of constant self-bullshitting. What the cynics and the bullshitters share is a recognize the utility of Higher Truth—big concepts like “God,” “family,” “freedom”—as a justification, but they in practice have no interest in actually defining those words, let alone generating a coherent worldview in which a big concept constrains their wants (or, more precisely, the emptiness inside them that requires a constant supply of new and varied forms of self-gratification).

(Also worth noting is that the line between cynicism, the vainglorious believers, and self-bullshitting is not a hard thing. Many people start off as one and then become the other.)

This is why—observing from the outside—there’s a fractal-like recursion across levels of magnification (from individuals to government to internationally) of exceptions to the inviolable rules that look like hypocrisy. They evoke big concepts and perform belief to the extent that they have utility in getting what they want. But any time a big concept might impose a constraint on their libertinism, they just ignore the big concept’s supposedly-solid rules, or claim the right to change the rules and declare the exceptions to the rules. This is also demonstrated in how often they argue—apply ideas in rhetoric—in bad faith.

What’s super fucked up is that fanatics, the cynics, and, erm, the full of shit go together really well, creating especially fucked-up social chimeras that channel their energy outwards, towards the common enemy…the rest of us human beings who stumble about trying to be good and trying to care about other people.

Amid protests throughout London against President Donald Trump’s state visit to the United Kingdom, the “Chief Mouser” of 10 Downing Street held his own sit-in of sorts.

Larry the Cat, the feline who occupies the British government headquarters, was caught on camera Monday, spotted in the background of photographs and otherwise causing a stir.

One reporter covering the events outside 10 Downing Street shared a picture of Larry lying under Trump’s limo and staying put, jokingly calling it a “huge security issue.”

I don’t think anyone at the top of the US right is a True Believer in anything.

The coalition of ideologies all include a base assumption that there is a natural hierarchy—spiritual, economic, racial, national—but in practice have to keep spinning exceptions and inventing new rhetoric because their practice (of religion, business, identity, etc) does not match their words. Trump is the hylic grail of this trend.

In turn, the “base” are mostly people that enjoy power…specifically abuse of power. Hence why they’ve all taken to Trump so readily—he provides them with gratification…no shit I’m taking power/sex pants tingle type gratification…and that’s all they want. They’ve been trained by years and years of culture to view that (pants) feeling as The Only Thing That Matters, and as The Good. The reactionary right and fascists are even more explicit about the self-gratification, pants-feeling benefits of their ideology. This is why I keep talking about deSade: these people are caught up in some intense power/sex stuff where the precise point of the fantasy is that they get to hurt people with no limits. They may dress it up in different terminology…incel, Rapture-ready, militia…but that’s costuming. The central theme of gratuitous violence is stable.

This is the completely natural follow-up to themes present in the different wings of “conservative” culture in the US. All produce pornography culture product that reinforces that there exists individuals deserving of suffering and cruelty, such that one should feel good about participating in cruelty.

Much like with most serial killers, there’s so much less than meets the eye to these people.
