Can anyone explain the economic theory behind the idea that the Fed is likely to lower interest rates because tariffs are damaging our economy (so far, I understand that,) so Yay! Let’s drive the Dow up! (Which seems counter-intuitive.)

I can’t really explain it, but any thinking related to Wall Street generally starts with “Short term profits.”

The Fed is lowering interest rates, so we can borrow more to pay the tariffs! That means more blow and hookers for Wall Street

But the Fed isn’t buying stocks. If the economy tanks, there won’t be markets for the products fund managers are investing in.

Regarding having Joe Biden run as a Republican:

This is actually really harmful to the effort of removing Trump from office. Joe Biden is not a Republican. He’s a moderate liberal. He’s pro-choice. He’s pro-ACA. He’s pro VAWA. He’s pro-voting rights.

There’s a fetid movement brewing that will urge liberals to refuse to vote for Biden. They’re turning him into the same caricature as they did successfully with Hillary Clinton. We shouldn’t help them.

The idea that J Edgar Hoover’s FBI could place MLK in the same room as a rape and not prosecute the case because they didn’t feel like it is ludicrous.

The fact that no such case was prosecuted means that there was no case they could prosecute.

Faking an apparent “real” recording on a reel-to-reel, even by early-1960’s technology, was laughably easy. Without a complainant, there’s no reason to believe a recording in J Edgar Hoover’s files is in any way an accurate reflection of a true incident.

Sgt Pepper was 1967; there was zero possibility that any track could be performed live.

Juanita Jean: Required Reading

From late last year, George Packer of the Atlantic summarized the last 60 years of the GOP and nailed it, from pre-Goldwater to the Trump era. Best quote:

“The corruption of the Republican Party in the Trump era seemed to set in with breathtaking speed. In fact, it took more than a half century to reach the point where faced with a choice between democracy and power, the party chose the latter. Its leaders don’t see a dilemma—democratic principles turn out to be disposable tools, sometimes useful, sometimes inconvenient. The higher cause is conservatism, but the highest is power.”

it gives a blistering picture of what we non-GOPers face against “true believers”. And it ain’t pretty. — El Jefe

The feds indicted a Maryland resident, one Chad Arrington, aka rapper “Chad Focus” on federal charges of conspiracy, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft. Apparently he stole $4.1 million from his unnamed employer, where he was employed as a search engine optimization specialist. I’ll let the feds’ press release tell the rest of the story:

[F]rom approximately 2011 to August 2018. As an SEO Specialist, Arrington was responsible for promoting and marketing Company 1’s products and services online. Company 1 assigned Arrington an American Express company credit card (the “credit card”) after Arrington signed an agreement in which he agreed to use the credit card only for business expenses related to Company 1.

The indictment alleges that from at least January 2015 through August 2018, Arrington and four co-conspirators used the credit card for fraudulent purchases, including to promote the Chad Focus brand and to make unauthorized purchases that benefitted them each personally. According to the indictment, Arrington used the credit card to make over $1.5 million in unauthorized purchases from entities and accounts controlled by Co-Conspirator 2 and Co-Conspirator 3, and then Co-Conspirator 2 and Co-Conspirator 3, in turn, kicked back hundreds of thousands of dollars to Arrington by funneling cash payments to Arrington and to accounts controlled by Arrington.

For example, the indictment alleges that Arrington used the credit card to purchase sound equipment, studio kits, instruments, and music technology, which he then used to create an artist alter-ego “Chad Focus,” and produce a number of hip-hop songs through the company he formed, Focus Music Entertainment LLC. Arrington allegedly used the credit card to make additional unauthorized purchases: from online streaming platforms that offered services for artists to pay to have the platforms artificially increase Arrington’s song play counts on other music platforms; to purchase “likes,” “followers,” “tags,” and “views” across social media and viewing platforms; to purchase services from a company that promoted mixtape videos and singles, his image, and music; and to make unauthorized payments to multiple billboard companies to display images of Arrington and his website throughout the United States and to promote Chad Focus and Focus Music Entertainment LLC. Arrington allegedly utilized the credit card to make more than $250,000 in purchases related to a bike-sharing business, including electric bikes, hover boards, and scooters. The indictment further alleges that Arrington used the credit card for concert tickets, various unauthorized international and national travel expenses, including hotels, airfare, restaurant bills, luxury vehicle rentals, and nightlife expenses, and for travel expenses and airline tickets for the benefit of Co-Conspirators 1 and 2.

In order to conceal the scheme, Arrington allegedly asked Co-Conspirator 1 and Co-Conspirator 4 to use computer software to make false entries on the credit card billing statements in order to conceal the recipient of the payments from Arrington’s supervisor and Company 1. In addition, the indictment alleges that Arrington forged the signature of his supervisor on his credit card billing statements to make it appear as though he had received approval for certain purchases when, in fact, he had not. According to the indictment, Arrington then sent those false payment authorizations to other employees who relied on the authorizations to ultimately pay off the outstanding balance of the credit card.

If convicted, Arrington faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for the wire fraud conspiracy and for each of two counts of wire fraud; and a mandatory minimum of two years in prison, consecutive to any other sentence, for each of four counts of aggravated identity theft.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former White House Communications Director Hope Hicks, once a close aide to President Donald Trump, has agreed to turn over documents related to his 2016 election campaign to congressional investigators, a top Democratic lawmaker said on Tuesday.

Hicks, Trump’s former campaign press secretary, agreed to supply the documents from the campaign, despite a White House directive advising her not to provide the committee with material from her subsequent time at the White House.

I just started last night, got thru first two episodes.

I am still underwhelmed. Just like with “Dirk Gently”, they seem to be trying too hard to be hip and edgy and cool, when Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams were all about being total dorks bumbling through and having world-changing adventures despite themselves.

But I will continue watching as I enjoyed the book a lot and nothing they have done so far has detracted from that.

Can anyone explain the economic theory behind the idea that the Fed is likely to lower interest rates because tariffs are damaging our economy (so far, I understand that,) so Yay! Let’s drive the Dow up! (Which seems counter-intuitive.)

It’s a hedge against the slowing economy.

The Fed sees Trump’s idiotic trade war and tariffs as a brake on economic activity. Therefore, the Fed will use cuts in interest rates to stimulate the economy to maintain the current rate of activity, where inflation is relatively low and growth remains stable.

It’s a tacit admission that Trump’s trade policy is highly damaging to our economy.

During their processing, they need to eat — dad was the one dishing up the meal. After a couple of years of that, for demobilization the base was repurposed into a place where shiploads of soldiers pass through on their way to board a train. Dad was still there, dishing up the meal. He also peeled a lot of potatoes, and cleaned grease traps.

The only time he ever had to fire a weapon was in basic training.

My grandfather was slightly too old and worked at a meat packing plant with 5 kids. Draft board wanted nothing to do with him.

My FiL was in the Navy chasing U-boats occasionally in their PT boats, though more often they had to tow fishing boats back to port after their diesel was stolen by U-boats off the Virginia/Chesapeake coast.

He met my MiL in Washington DC where she was a secretary for the General in charge of, IIRC, the Remount service (providing fresh horses for those units that still used them) and she didn’t trust that terribly charismatic boy from Alabama so she gave him a fake name in case she had to ditch him. She didn’t - he converted from Baptist to Roman Catholic for her, moved back to Wisconsin with her and was a Union organizer.

Dad just finished basic training and was headed to flight school when the war ended. He had several first cousins who served, but so far as I know there were no casualties—no one ever talked about the war.

Last year, I was out by Great Sand Dunes and saw a cougar… and heard it cry.

It sounded something like this:

I love that, after the long series of cries, there is this soft “me-ow…”

My grandfather and his two brothers served, one in Europe, one in both, and my grandfather in the Pacific. They all returned. He became an alcoholic, and they found him dead in a creek when I was six months old.

Two of my uncles served, returned physically unscathed, mentally as well as far as I remember (which is not very much). Dad worked as a steel roller at US Steel Gary, 4F with flat feet.

Damn. Dad did tell me that a classmate in high school hung himself rather than go into the military (Dad got deferment through college and ROTC, I believe so that he didn’t have to go until he graduated in 1945).

I think I got linked to this article here, but I just wanted to post it anyway.

theatlantic.com The Atlantic

Goes back decades to start with Barry G… and gives Newt all the attention he deserves.

Even after Gingrich was driven from power, the victim of his own guillotine, he regularly churned out books that warned of imminent doom—unless America turned to a leader like him (he once called himself “teacher of the rules of civilization,” among other exalted epithets). Unlike Goldwater and Reagan, Gingrich never had any deeply felt ideology. It was hard to say exactly what “American civilization” meant to him. What he wanted was power, and what he most obviously enjoyed was smashing things to pieces in its pursuit. His insurgency started the conservative movement on the path to nihilism.

and following that surge rightward, came the big lurch when the nation actually elected a Black Man!

The new leader is like his authoritarian counterparts abroad: illiberal, demagogic, hostile to institutional checks, demanding and receiving complete acquiescence from the party, and enmeshed in the financial corruption that is integral to the political corruption of these regimes. Once again, liberals failed to see it coming and couldn’t grasp how it happened. Neither could some conservatives who still believed in democracy.

The corruption of the Republican Party in the Trump era seemed to set in with breathtaking speed. In fact, it took more than a half century to reach the point where faced with a choice between democracy and power, the party chose the latter. Its leaders don’t see a dilemma—democratic principles turn out to be disposable tools, sometimes useful, sometimes inconvenient. The higher cause is conservatism, but the highest is power.

As Bertolt Brecht wrote of East Germany’s ruling party:

Would it not be easier
In that case for the government
To dissolve the people
And elect another?

My dad was a medic in the Pacific theater. Father-in-law was in the European theater, tank destroyer, went into France three days after D-Day — saw the results of the first days but wasn’t in that wave. My mom’s two older brothers were in Europe; one spent a year in various hospitals getting his leg put back together minus shell fragments. (Her younger brother married a Japanese girl when he was stationed there during the Korean war.) My mom herself was a teenager working at the air base in Great Falls, checking planes in and out.

A whole generation with stories to tell; too many that weren’t. One can only hope some will be saved for future generations to read.

Loved the pics of that 97-year-old gent taking the parachute jump. Good on him!

Nearly all of the men (and some of the women) in my family going back at least 3 generations had military services. Everyone returned unscathed*, but knew enough folks who weren’t so lucky. No one ever wanted or wants to discuss the nature of their military services. Except for me - which is kinda funny since in an ironic twist, despite my service role being noncombatant in nature, I ended up seeing the most up-close combat of them all.

I was a cold war soldier in the US Army. Trashed my knees and back but it was just day to day as an active duty tanker and then as a infantry scout in the reserves, so yeah, I can get what you mean.

I was still in when Gulf 1 happened but I spent it in military intel school at Ft Huachuca Az. Bit of a desert but not the big sandbox for which I give great thanks to God. I’d have gone, sure, just grateful I didn’t have to.

re: #226 calochortus

My dad didn’t quite get drafted-he was within 6 months of being too old, close to underweight, marginal eyesight. The doctor apparently wrote something on the form, erased it, and then wrote something else. Dad joined the Red Cross. Which is where he met my Mom, so it was a good thing. (At least from my point of view.)

Dad was turned down, on more than on try. I think it was his feet. After the last one they sent him a letter, which he kept till the day he died. It was somewhat consoling, saying the country needed “soldiers of the home front”, and listed ways to contribute to the effort. He left his job in a box factory, and went to work at North American in Grand Prairie hanging gun mounts in P-51’s and B-24’s for the duration. His job at the box factory was waiting for him after the war.

And I can’t forget Mom. She left her “blind stitch operator” job in a curtain factory, and was welding in a munitions factory near by. After the war, she went back to curtains.

Oh, hello everyone!
