Teaching boys to hate girls (He man woman haters club anyone?) Is key to getting them to go along with the patriarchal order. Because they don’t naturally. Empathy and altruism were key to our evolution but order is at the core of civilization and currently that order is put in place by various forms of hate.

Another thing I was thinking about is how “survival of the fittest” is read as “survival of the strongest/biggest/most aggressive, most alpha” when any reading of natural history shows that there have been lots of large, aggressive species that died out.

“Survival of the fittest” in the end means survival of the most adaptable to constantly changing conditions.

It’s not like I haven’t considered going out and counterprotesting the Apologia Church guys as they harass women at the Tempe Planned Parenthood. Thing is, I don’t know if that will make it any better for the women there getting services. Which is why I chose to take it to the church’s sidewalk. If they can be a bother to PP, I can be a bother to them.

We humans respond to groups, which is why the anti-abortionists are there en masse.

And they will continue to amass until they are confronted with their tactics.

So I got my bill for a life flight I had to take last July 20 due to a stroke. I live in way North NY ( like Ottawa is 45 minutes away and the border and akwasasne mohawk reservation are normal things) and major hospitals are far away.
Since the life flight network is out of the benefits circle, they will pay 60%.
Turns out the insurance company paid only 3000. And they are stating I need to pay the difference.
The amount is 67499 total. They have paid roughly 4%.
I am worried and I do not know what to do about this. And I am saddened.

we were so very fortunate that MrBWS’s union insurance (IBEW) covered the entire cost of the LifeFlight when he had his heart attack last year.
We will definitely be purchasing the LifeFlight policy when he retires.

My insurance is through the hospital in the area because of the misses. It is more of a stabilizing place. Because of my rheumatological disorder and the blood thinners I am already on, my hospital can’t handle a thing. I have been to UVM in Burlington twice and Upstate in Syracuse twice.
The flight was to upstate. Just can’t wrap my head around it.

My insurance is through the hospital in the area because of the misses. It is more of a stabilizing place. Because of my rheumatological disorder and the blood thinners I am already on, my hospital can’t handle a thing. I have been to UVM in Burlington twice and Upstate in Syracuse twice.
The flight was to upstate. Just can’t wrap my head around it.

hubs had his LifeFlight to Lexington, KY, destination about 75 miles south of the hospital he was in.
LifeFlight is called for damned near everything here because we are so rural. Some towns here have actually paid the insurance to cover every one of their citizens. Several lizards here already have LifeFlight insurance.

Nothing about our health care delivery system is expected to make economic sense. It relies on convoluted network of subsidy, insurance, and write-offs. At the same time the market is inherently false—no one gets to make a rational cost/benefit decision because the decision is to live or die.

As an aside, private medevac is a nightmare business. Many of our retired Army helo pilots do a term there. For lots of reasons, medevac crewmember is a great way to get killed.

Quite a few years ago when I first moved into my house I cut myself on a broken piece of metal. At that time I was still working for Independence Blue Cross. When they saw my health insurance they wanted me to say overnight for cut that required no stitches. My dad and I put our collective feet down and got out of the hospital as soon as we could. Even so I had to go the family GP to get the gauze taken off and for it to be properly wrapped up so it would heal properly.

Major emergencies are only able to be dealt with via life flight or another major hospital. Uvm in Burlington, upstate or Crouse in Syracuse, Rochester, etc. Can’t handle a thing up here. You stabilize and ship out.

120 dollar ambulance ride from one side of the street to another ( first stroke in 2017, doctors office to hospital across the street drove myself to the doctor because it was a very slow onset of symptoms)

We have no way to deal. I am automatically shipped out for almost everything neurological. And they worry about working on me for everything else

There’s a reason conservatives are trying to get the FDA to ban the sale of so-called grandfathered drugs (those which were on the market before 1934).

I once had to get Phenobarbital from the local pharmacy here rather than the Veterans Administration. The pharmacist had to order it, since no one else in the county uses it.

When it came in, I apologised to him for having to order a thousand tablet bottle to fill a prescription of thirty tablets. He said thanks but not to worry, the cost of that thousand tablets to him was $7. (The cost to me was $0, paid for by the VA. The retail price is about $16 for sixty in pharmacies and about $25 in stores like Target or Wal*Mart.)

A helicopter flight from the nearest hospital would be a ton of money though. I’m covered by the VA and my wife by Tricare, but most people here would quickly wind up in hock to their eyeballs to go to the hospital by helicopter.

This is the same service that got to my dad’s house in less than 5 minutes and got him to Jeanes Hospital in less than 5 minutes. So from first call to hospital in 10 minutes.

It’s so screwy. In the rural mountains of Colorado, most ambulance services are part of for-profit hospitals (they’re all for-profit, just down the road is the hospital where the best orthopedic surgeons on planet Earth practice medicine) so ambulance rides are *very expensive* as I rudely found out 11 years ago. Yet if you need rescue out of the wilderness by helicopter and you paid $3 ($12 for five years) for the Colorado Search and Rescue Card (which can be purchased online, good idea if you plan on hiking/backpacking/mountaineering in the state), that’s free.

Up here in Juneau, Alaska, we have 3 different life-flight services in town. Many people sign up for all 3 as a back up to be sure one of the services is available when you need it. One service (Guardian) costs you and your family just $125 per year. The company bills your insurance or Medicare for the flight and what is not paid by them is covered by the company. Altogether, having all 3 services costs about $300 total.

Guardian Life Flight has also partnered with lower 48 services for coverage when an Alaskan travels down south.

Here’s the real benefit. Once you have your heart attack and have the local FD transport you to the ER, you can then sign up with the life flight service while in the ER!!

No waiting period!!

Listening to my FD scanner, there are usually 3-5 life flight transfers every day.

Most life flights go to Seattle but others can go to Anchorage. About the same flight time either way.

The North Platte is out of its banks just downstream from us.

Coming back from Massachusetts, there is still flooding in eastern Nebraska. Due to poorly marked detours in Iowa, I wound up taking a state highway home. There were several places where water was over the road.

When I was in Haines AK, one of the tour guides mentioned that absolutely everyone there buys medical evacuation insurance, since there’s no hospital anywhere nearby. When I was administering our postdoc program at the university, the medical plan we offered didn’t include repatriation/medical evacuation at first (a requirement for a J visa), so we provided it through a private insurer (less than $20 per quarter, as I recall, but it was a very young cohort). Is there something like that in your neck of the woods?

If you do need to be rescued by helicopter in the Colorado wilderness, do it near Aspen or Vail. The High-Altitude Army National Guard Aviation Training Site is nearby, they volunteer their aircraft and pilots all the time, and they never charge a penny for their services.

I forgot to mention that about 3 months ago a life flight plane went down out in the channel. Lost the pilot and 2 nurses (no patient on board). One of the nurses was 4 months pregnant. They recovered the plane wreckage but none of the bodies.

Flying life flight aircraft is a dangerous business. Even more so in Alaska.

Trump admin tells U.S. embassies they can’t fly pride flag on flagpoles (Goes to NBC News)

This is a bit more complicated than “Trump hates gays” (though that is probably the reason).

During the Obama Administration, President Obama allowed embassies and legations to fly the Pride flag from the official staff. Trump’s state department said embassies need to put in individual requests, and none have been granted (though the flag may be displayed anywhere else in an embassy or on its grounds).

Specifically, the US Flag Code prohibits flying anything but governmental flags on the same staff as the US Flag. Those are limited to federal department flags, military flags (though those are normally flown from a different staff), state flags, municipal or county flags, the POW/MIA flag (allowed by an Act of Congress), or the Gold Star Flag (on Gold Star Mothers and Families Day, also by an Act of Congress).

The US Flag Code allows the President or state governors to modify how the flag is displayed, so President Obama’s order did not violate the Flag Code. Likewise, Trump’s order sticks with the Flag Code.

They also wanted to add the Bible to science standards, and were concerned that not teaching “both sides” (I presume science and Islam were the both sides, correct?) would undermine children from being inquisitive (as in teaching facts as facts would cause children not to question).

Before the state school board gave final approval to a new set of science teaching standards Thursday, several conservative members said they fear Utah students are going to be taught that evolution means that humans “are like pigs” and that “only crazy people” believe God created the earth.

This past October, notorious Boston mobster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger was bludgeoned to death in a West Virginia prison. But before that, he spent years writing letters from that prison in which he expressed his undying adoration for one Donald J. Trump. Also, despite the many failed attempts by the conservative media to link Robert Mueller to Bulger last year, Bulger apparently hated Mueller and was very angry that he was not being nice enough to poor Donald Trump.

His penpal and the recipient of 75 missives over the last five years was one Janet Ulhar, a Cape Cod nurse who believed he was guilty, but was also “troubled” by the fact that much of the testimony he was convicted on came from other mobsters who had cut deals with the prosecution. Kind of like the deals Bulger cut himself when he was dishing out info about the Patriarca Crime Family to the FBI back in the day.

Janet wrote to him to express her “skepticism” over the way Bulger had been treated by prosecutors, which is of course a very normal thing for a normal person who is not a serial killer groupie to do.

Rev. William Barber was convicted for trespassing over the sit-in he led in the North Carolina statehouse in 2017.

The jury returned its verdict in less than half an hour. The prosecutor claimed that the issue wasn’t about any state constitution issue or the I Amendment, but simply as the law is written.

The judge was not inclined to impose a severe penalty on Rev. Barber however. He was sentenced to one day in jail (suspended), a $200 fine, and twenty-four hours of community service.

Speaking to the Guardian by phone after the verdict, Barber described it as “a serious case for the country”.

He added: “It’s particularly serious when the majority of the negative things happening - denial of the living wage, of healthcare, denial of LGBTQ and immigrants’ rights, denial of basic public education and racist voter suppression - are happening at statehouses, especially in the south.

“We cannot just put our hands between our legs and say: ‘OK, sorry, you can regulate my nonviolent protest,’ and just go away. The extremists in the south want to keep these statehouses under lock and key.”

Some of you might remember how a couple of years ago my brother and mother were victims of a hit and run that left their car non-operational in Lordsburg, New Mexico. I drove out from Phoenix (250 miles) to ferry them onward to Las Cruces (120 miles), because it was the first place on I-10 that had a rental car facility. I think one thing people don’t get about I-10 in the West is that in between Los Angeles and San Antonio, a distance of 1,350 miles, there are three big cities: Phoenix, Tucson and El Paso and one decent sized town, Las Cruces (100,000 people). It’s empty as hell outside of the cities. Just dumping people in Deming (population 14,187) or Las Cruces at any time is bad. Dumping them now, when temperatures are ranging above 100 every day is just horrible bullshit nonsense. The sheer cruelty of the Trump administration is on display.

Just to conclude, thank God for Annunciation House for moving people to transportation hubs.

For that matter, you keep your gas tank topped off driving here in the Nebraska Panhandle. You also make sure to make a loo stop as well (the only loo between Bridgeport and Ogallala is an outhouse in Lisco east of my town on US-26, and an outhouse in Arthur on NE-92).

We came home on NE-92 due to bad detour signage for I-29 in Iowa. Once you get out of Omaha, that outhouse in Arthur starts looking really good. (There is a lot of graffiti inside of people writing “thank you” to the village of Arthur for putting it up.)

I actually don’t know what to say.

You and I probably want pretty much the same thing: The Golden Rule. Treat others as you wish to be treated has been incorporated by many religious faiths throughout the centuries, though it is not specifically religious in nature.

If one was to boil down the words ascribed to Jesus in the New Testament, the Golden Rule would be a fair summary I think.

The marginally less reactionary candidate for Tory leadership, Michael Gove, appears to be fond of GOP talking points:

The Environment Secretary said he would replace VAT with a “lower, simpler” alternative if he is elected Prime Minister in a bid to counter Jeremy Corbyn’s “Marxist” economic message.

Some of you might remember how a couple of years ago my brother and mother were victims of a hit and run that left their car non-operational in Lordsburg, New Mexico. I drove out from Phoenix (250 miles) to ferry them onward to Las Cruces (120 miles), because it was the first place on I-10 that had a rental car facility. I think one thing people don’t get about I-10 in the West is that in between Los Angeles and San Antonio, a distance of 1,350 miles, there are three big cities: Phoenix, Tucson and El Paso and one decent sized town, Las Cruces (100,000 people). It’s empty as hell outside of the cities. Just dumping people in Deming (population 14,187) or Las Cruces at any time is bad. Dumping them now, when temperatures are ranging above 100 every day is just horrible bullshit nonsense. The sheer cruelty of the Trump administration is on display.

Just to conclude, thank God for Annunciation House for moving people to transportation hubs.

You and I probably want pretty much the same thing: The Golden Rule. Treat others as you wish to be treated has been incorporated by many religious faiths throughout the centuries, though it is not specifically religious in nature.

Physicists Say They’ve Built a Test Sensitive Enough to Test The ‘Impossible’ EM Drive (which is a copy of what was first published on the website Futurism, which was about a story on Wired: A MYTHICAL FORM OF SPACE PROPULSION FINALLY GETS A REAL TEST )

These outlets: the dubious ScienceAlert and Futurism, run with anything that will grab a headline, but the story is fraught with problems. As is the Wired article.

The stories themselves are just full of bad explanations.

The Wikipedia article is better (as in general, unstable as Wikipedia may be, the science topics tend to be well regulated by communities.)

For example, standard door sizes are 3 feet wide. If you change to metric, now you’re at (checks internet) 91 cm, which makes basic calculations more difficult. If you adjust to 90 cm or 1 meter then you can’t use existing materials and everyone in manufacturing has to change their stuff.

I remember when Nixon proposed a 10 year transition to the Metric System in 1971 and the John Birch Society turned on him, claiming that he was doing it because the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) ordered him to do it.

For younger folks, the Birchers claimed that the US was run by the CFR which wanted to institute a world Communist government run by the Rockefellers and their Big Bank associates.

Conservative Republicans joined the Birchers and whipped up enough opposition that Nixon had to withdraw the plan.

Then in 1977, Jimmy Carter tried again and the first step was to post road speed signs in English and Metric (55/88 as the press called it). Once again the Birchers and Republicans pounced on this saying this time that Carter was a stooge for the new Rockefeller front called The Trilateral Commission.

Auto dealers got a big backlash because people refused to buy cars with metric notations on speed displays. So once again Stupidity triumphed….

Construction standards are a poor metric to justify Imperial measurements. Take the common “2x4” .. it has steadily shrunk over time and now measures right at 1.5” by 3.5in.

Auto techs in the US now deal more with metric standards than they do in Imperial these days. Construction lags behind because most projects start and end right here with no foreign cooperation required.

Mars Observer. I believe it was a Newton/Pound conversion that resulted in incorrect course correction burns. Went too deep into the atmosphere on its initial pass and became a meteor. There wasn’t enough maneuvering fuel to correct the trajectory when they realized the problem several days before Mars orbit insertion.

So much for the “Climate change will be awesome because all that CO2 will be beneficial to farming!” argument. Kinda hard to farm much of anything if you and your fields are under several feet of water.

I started thinking up a theory to explain Donny’s latest pantsing over Mexican tariffs. It went that he’d ordered DHS to come up with an agreement months ago, back when the “soft” team was in charge, and they came up with what was just “signed” on Friday. But Donny and/or Miller declared it “wasn’t enough” and so fired the “soft” DHS team in favor of a “tough” one that would press Mexico for greater concessions.

Well, after months of Mexico refusing to budge, Donny decided to play “Deal Maker” and threaten tariffs in an effort to scare concessions out of them. He made all sorts of noise about how he was gonna go through with those tariffs, that he was gonna punish Mexico, and he was gonna get them to agree to “tough” measures. But they called his bluff and continued to stand by the earlier agreement, while political pressure at home mounted for him to back off on tariffs or else hurt his own party going into elections next year. So he or somebody in the White House got Mexico to say this agreement would be the “start” of something bigger, which gave Donny the out to say he’d managed to make an awesome deal with them.

…but then I realized that such a plan would require a man of much greater skill, so concluded it was probably somebody else who once again saved the man from himself.

Sort of like how most Republicans have counted on Democrats to save them from themselves, until they voted for this guy.
