When I read the tweet, my first thought was OMG, not my evil too big to fail employer!

But it’s apparently BB&T and SunTrust, who have decided to take on the name “Truist.”

What kind of brain trust comes up with this stuff?

They must have hired the company that comes up with the names for all those meds they advertise on TV.

Also, from the last thread…

I see at least four issues:

1. Truist can be easily mispronounced

2. Too easily confused with “Trust”

3. Sounds somewhat similar to “Jewish” and you know the conspiracy nuts are going to be all over that.

4. Also, this may be only me, but the word just looks weird typed out

Dragged up from the CL’s thread:

re: #214 A hollow voice says, Inpeach…

Neither of your links says anything about military custody (“discussing greater military involvement” is not the same thing). Using former wwii internment camps is not military custody unless the military administers them.

If someone has a link to information about transfers from ICE et al. to actual military custody, I would like to see it, but I haven’t found anything.

It will not be that clear-cut. The concept of “tenency” prevails, which allows things like USAF sites on NASA bases and vice-versa. Army installations host non-command Army elements, DoD, other Federal agencies, and private contractor operations. The meat, though, is that the base (like Sill) assures security and limits access. The flipside is that the sad-ass 06 who runs the real estate and the 3/4-star who runs the troop elements will be the ones covered in shit when it all goes tits-up.

To the people who are doubting this is happening, here’s a story from Texas Monthly dated June 11 about how the El Paso Border Patrol is back to detaining immigrants in a “dog pound.”

In El Paso, Border Patrol Is Detaining Migrants in ‘a Human Dog Pound’

Immigration officials have resumed the much-criticized practice of keeping people outdoors for weeks to relieve dangerous overcrowding.

texasmonthly.com

Also on CBS News: cbsnews.com

ETA: Techdirt also has a story from last week about how ICE is cramming people into locations.

A quote from that story:

According to PDT Border Patrol processing facility staff, the facility’s maximum capacity is 125 detainees. However, on May 7 and 8, 2019, Border Patrol’s custody logs indicated that there were approximately 750 and 900 detainees on site, respectively. TEDS standards provide that “under no circumstances should the maximum [cell] occupancy rate, as set by the fire marshal, be exceeded” (TEDS 4.7).

techdirt.com

This is really, truly happening.

This is the thing…it’s not just HHS. People are being held by the Border Patrol and ICE as well. There’s no coordination and as far as I can tell, it’s completely deliberate. Slipping people into the tender care of the Army, yeah, I could see it happening.

Ft. Sill is military. This allows them to do whatever the hell they want with no oversight.

Ever try to get into a military base without permission? My ex was Navy and I’ve worked on military installations. You ain’t getting on without permission. No eyes=no oversight.

Not according to some Cherokee.

Actually, that’s a “yes”, within my limits on the way we put installations together since the 1990s. The essence is the access and security provided by burying a tenant operation within a large host installation. The installation commander, who is usually not the high-ranking troop commander, is the fall guy.

Ft. Sill is a military base.

According to your second link, Fort Sill is a national historical landmark and museum. (It has a website.) Also, the Obama administration used it to house unaccompanied migrant children in 2014.

(And I really have to go do something else now — this has eaten most of my afteroon.)

Eclectic Cyborg  Jun 13, 2019 • 3:59:22pm

Yeah, no oversight for non-english speakers who have no money and no advocates.

That’s a perfect recipe for the kind of unchecked brutality that breeds future terrorists.

25
Decatur Deb  Jun 13, 2019 • 4:00:11pm

Note that the internment of HHS guests on bases is not unique. During the last few decades, there have been attempts to open spare military space as homeless shelters during times of severe need. The commanders went apeshit, and I don’t know if it was ever actually implemented outside the DC area.

I was just looking at the Supreme Court opinions from this term and noticed that thus far Thomas has written the most decisions (8). Of those, half have been unanimous opinions. The other four have all been 5-4 decisions, but the majorities have all been different - including one on a procedural question relating to class actions in which Thomas sided with Ginsberg, Breyer, Sotomayor, and Kagen. Found that rather interesting.

I haven’t read much of the cases, just sort of scanned some of the summaries, but I found it interesting. Also worth noting that a lot of the “big” cases for this term haven’t come down yet.

She had a child very prematurely, and when she got pregnant again (even though she tried contraception with her second husband) she had an abortion because doctors feared she wasn’t physically able to have another kid:

Rep. Pramila Jayapal: The Story of My Abortion

It was excruciating. I wanted children, but I wasn’t ready, nor was I fully recovered. I was so grateful that Janak had survived, but I could not tempt fate again. It had to be my choice, because in the end, I would be the one to carry the fetus in my body, I would be the one to potentially face another emergency cesarean section, and I would be the one whose baby could suffer the serious, sometimes fatal consequences of extreme prematurity. I could not simply hope for the best — I had to make a decision based on the tremendous risks that had been clearly laid out for me.

I decided I could not responsibly have the baby. It was a heartbreaking decision, but it was the only one I was capable of making.

The doctor who performed my abortion was incredible: extremely skilled, thoughtful, kind and compassionate. She knew and had seen, over and over again, what it took for women to make these choices. My husband, too, knew that it had to be my decision and offered only support and comfort through the most difficult moments.

Important:

Incidents of this nature in relative close proximity are extremely worrying, and are indicative of rising tensions in the region. On a broader regional scale, the attack will serve to deepen tensions between Iran and the US, which have gradually escalated throughout 2019.

It is a realistic possibility that Iran or a proxy were behind this attack, however the situation remains fluid and there are a number of competing narratives that require examining. It is important to note that the attack on the Front Altair is reported to have struck the starboard side of the vessel, which was travelling in a southerly direction. Any Iranian involvement either directly or via a proxy is unlikely to have conducted an attack from the port side, as this would immediately give rise to allegations of Iranian shore launch projectiles would require Iran to refute blast diagnostic evidence from the outset. Thus far the methodology of a starboard side attack is consistent with what would be expected of Iranian involvement. The reported involvement of Iranian vessels in the rescue effort may also be an attempt to obscure intent in the aftermath of the attack however this cannot be confirmed.

However, any assessment of Iranian involvement must be contextualised, and must be analysed through the prism of self-interest and motive. States such as Iran are rational actors, and will not conduct attacks in the Strait of Hormuz merely to ‘disrupt’ global shipping, without there being a clear national interest in doing so. At a time where the Iranian economy is struggling and sanctions are biting, it seems surprising that Iran would endeavour to conduct such a bellicose strategy. It would also be remarkable that Iran would knowingly target vessels reported to be carrying ‘Japan-related cargo’ at the same time that the Japanese Prime Minister Abe is conducting talks in Iran. These inconsistencies in terms of interest and motive do not rule out Iranian involvement, but they do suggest that a wider regional narrative may be at play, and that the responsible party could in fact not be Iranian once a further investigation is completed. It is important to note that despite recent events pointing to Iranian involvement, no key lines of evidence indicating responsibility or intent have been identified. Whilst the security threat which the incident poses can be quantified and responded to, the underlying details are still emerging, and will continue to be assessed by Dryad.

Police brutality in the Valley of the Sun:

Shocking footage of a Phoenix police officer telling a 22-year-old man, “I’m gonna put a fucking cap in your fucking head” has sparked backlash against a department already reeling from the revelation last week of racist social media posts from officers.

Now, the man and family in the video — Dravon Ames, his pregnant fiancée, Iesha Harper, and their two young children — have filed a notice of claim against the city of Phoenix. The family is seeking $10 million in damages. Former Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne is representing the family.

And what caused this reaction from the cops?

Video of the May 29 encounter with Phoenix police near 36th and Roosevelt streets show several Phoenix police officers, some with guns drawn, surrounding the car of the couple and their two young children. It’s unclear what preceded the encounter, but Ames said it all began after their daughter walked out of a Family Dollar store with a doll.

The police were all about the use of violence for these terrible criminals:

At one point, an officer slams Ames’ face against a police car, then kicks his legs apart. Meanwhile, another officer attempts to yank Harper’s 1-year-old daughter out of her arms.

According to the notice of claim, the officer also punched Ames in the back while he had him pressed up against the police vehicle. Ames, who works at a warehouse, said he has suffered physical injuries as a result of the encounter.

The family also alleges that one of the officers injured their 1-year-old child when he attempted to yank the baby out of Harper’s arms.

phoenixnewtimes.com

There are two videos of the second half of the encounter, filmed by people in the apartment complex.

The Phoenix PD already has bad publicity because some of its officers were found to have bashed Muslims and called black people thugs on Facebook:

phoenixnewtimes.com

This is not just a Phoenix thing, either. My own city, Mesa, has a police force that is trying to eject its chief through a vote of no confidence because the chief is trying to cut down on the number of use of force incidents by officers.
