Because why not:

On the physical (im)possibility of lightsabers

In this paper, we use a science fiction theme (i.e. the iconic lightsaber from the Star Wars universe) as a pedagogical tool to introduce aspects of nonlinear electrodynamics due to the quantum vacuum to an audience with an undergraduate physics background. In particular, we focus on one major problem with lightsabers that is commonly invoked as an argument to dismiss them as unrealistic: light blades are not solid and thus cannot be used in a duel as normal swords would. Using techniques coming from ultra intense laser science, we show that for high enough laser intensities, two lightsaber blades can `feel’ solid to each other. We argue that this aspect of lightsabers is not impossible due to limitations of the laws of physics, but is very implausible due to the high intensities and energy needed for their operation.

More raining on scifi tropes:

Killing Science Fiction: Why Conscious States Cannot Be Copied or Repeated

Several philosophical problems arising from the physics of consciousness, including identity, duplication, teleportation, simulation, self-location, and the Boltzmann Brain problem, hinge on one of the most deeply held but unnecessary convictions of physicalism: the assumption that brain states and their corresponding conscious states can in principle be copied. In this paper I will argue against this assumption by attempting to prove the Unique History Theorem, which states, essentially, that conscious correlations to underlying quantum mechanical measurement events must increase with time and that every conscious state uniquely determines its history from an earlier conscious state. By assuming only that consciousness arises from an underlying physical state, I will argue that the physical evolution from a first physical state giving rise to a conscious state to a second physical state giving rise to a later conscious state is unique. Among the consequences of this theorem are that: consciousness is not algorithmic and a conscious state cannot be uploaded to or simulated by a digital computer; a conscious state cannot be copied by duplicating a brain or any other physical state; and a conscious state cannot be repeated or created de novo. These conclusions shed light on the physical nature of consciousness by rendering moot a variety of seemingly paradoxical philosophy and science fiction problems.

Hi.

We survived the heavy weather. More scheduled for tomorrow.

In the meantime, at a LEGO conference in New Zealand, a fan was kicked out for his LEGO displays.

The problem? They were graphic, but accurate, depictions of nudity and violence in the Bible.

The organisers of the event said nearly half his displays were unsafe for children (duh, this is the Bible we’re talking about). The man, who is a Christian and put together the displays to honour his faith, says the conference is discriminating against him over his religion.

If the US economy is so strong, then this wouldn’t matter.
If the US economy was as strong as Trump claims, the Fed wouldn’t be warning that they’d have to drop interest rates because Trump’s idiotic trade war was having a direct and measurable impact on economic activity.

Trump’s a dumbass whose idiotic trade wars have cost Americans dearly and his base is among the hardest hit (as if they care - they think that others are getting hit worse; they aren’t). The service industry is doing well. It’s manufacturers who are hardest hit by the tariffs on raw materials like steel and aluminum. It’s farmers hardest hit by retaliatory tariffs that have sent Trumpworld scrambling to give them $25 billion in bailouts.

The shitshow rolls on.

while electoral-vote.com is one of my favorite sites, this here is what we were talking about yesterday re “impeachment”, and i think it’s a big error

On Monday, Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) announced that, “After weeks of study, deliberation and conversations with Orange County families, I’ve decided to support an impeachment investigation of the president.” That makes her roughly the 60th member of the House to publicly support impeachment.

they quoted her “impeachment investigation”
then said it meant she supports ‘impeachment’

we must be clear and keep pushing that there are separate discrete and distinct steps in this process. investigations alone can do a lot. and have nothing to do with whether the senate votes to convict (or even gets the opportunity)

Enya’s 80s hit Sail Away seems especially susceptible to misheard lyrics.

The Misheard Lyrics:
Save a whale, save a whale, save a whale
The Real Lyrics:
Sail away, sail away, sail away
The Story: I was working in a new age bookstore in the 80’s when a customer approached me, asking for ‘the save a whale’ song. I asked her to hum it to me. She was not to be convinced that she was mistaken until I actually played her the song and showed her the cd jacket. She seemed irritated, as though someone had played a trick on her, but she bought it. - Submitted by: David Morrison

There are many other versions

Misheard Lyrics:
Jebediah the Pariah said, ‘Come & bring your shorts.’
Original Lyrics:
Let me sail, let me sail, let me crash upon your shore.

Obviously a product of the drug culture.

My wife tells a story of a night when she was young and out and about and listening to a local band at a bar:

“put another frog in the dryer” from “put another log on the fire”

No idea about anything about the band or the song.

Don’t know about the band she was listening to, but this was probably the song, written by Shel Silverstein:

The show is independent of The Good Wife, once you get going all the pieces fall in place
It is way less about national/state politics, more about local politics and nitty gritty of law practice.

I love the show, its very topical

The argument that all 16 year-old do stupid shit is really not a good one. If you go on a racist screed online, there is a basis for that view of ‘others’ and it is a negative one. He didn’t do it ‘just because’, it is a learned aspect of his personality that is there; can he change that? Of course, but an apology letter is just that, an apology. It doesn’t mean that the core racism is cured, that take proof by action.

WTF, Norm.

While I support decriminalization and legalization of marijuana, certain people who have already manifested certain mental illnesses - like bipolar disorder with congruent psychotic features - need to be very careful, as my wife and I learned last winter when we had to hospitalize our daughter the second time in the space of six weeks.

She’s a non-user, but during her second episode, her tests showed marijuana in her system which wasn’t present during her first episode (which was a walking nightmare for everyone in and of itself).

She remembers the days leading up to her first psychotic break and the delusions and hallucinations she experienced. She does not remember much of the night of the second psychotic break or how she ended up with THC in her system. Our leading theory is that she got into a (now former) housemate’s stash of edibles while alone and manic.

Do I blame the marijuana? No. Do we think it possible that it exacerbated the second incident due to our daughter’s irregularities in her brain chemistry? Yeah. Do we know for certain? No. Is caution warranted? Yes. Is Ornstein being hysterical? Probably.

Apartment building I used to live in was a re-purposed office building that had been built in 1924. When the elevators broke down* they would often be down for close to a week since repairs and finding replacement parts was quite difficult.

I presume that an old hotel in Vienna would probably have a quite similar issues. If not worse since I expect that the elevators were not original to the construction and were probably shoehorned in at some point. And at least part of the equipment is probably 1920s or older.

* - The place I used to live in eventually did an *expensive* refurbishment of their two elevators that stretched out over multiple months since they had to try to guarantee that one, and/or the freight elevator would always be available.

Trump and his sycophants explicitly stated as much. They wanted to make the process as painful as possible as a deterrent to any of them coming to the US.

The whole point was to stop nonwhite legal immigration. Asylum is legal immigration, and Trump’s fixated on stopping it. His policies are all meant to further a white nationalist agenda.

We’ve seen this before too - from the nativist/white nationalist base that comprises the GOP.

If the Senate does not open SCOTUS confirmation hearings within 60 days of the nomination, the Senate will have deemed to have assented to the nomination and the nominee will be seated on the Court.

If the Senate does not hold a vote on a SCOTUS confirmation within 120 days of the nomination, the Senate will have deemed to have assented to the nomination and the nominee will be seated on the Court.

Because I can see how someone like McConnell might try to game the situation to give hearings but never schedule a vote.
