Here’s the video. I rolled it to the 24:28 mark. The next several minutes are this Justice Dept. attorney Sarah Fabian arguing that Judge Dolly Gee went too far in ordering that children should be provided soap, toothbrushes and showers, and should not have to sleep on the floor. It’s a *remarkable* video, in which you have to ask why the fuck Sarah Fabian didn’t walk out of her job when she was asked to make these arguments.

17-56297 Jenny Flores v. William Barr

And here’s a background story: sfgate.com

The tl;dr, tl;dl is the judges on the 9th circuit panel were not taking this lawyer’s argument at all.

My favorite are the ones who decide they’re suddenly immigration law professors and insist to you that the law clearly states that they people have to seek asylum in Mexico because it’s the first “safe country” they arrive in. Particularly because these same jackholes are the ones who (without missing a beat) will declare Mexico “Ruled by the cartels!” and regularly send you links and clips about every cartel-related crime in Mexico to show you why it’s such a “hellhole.”

Brexit zealots are happy to throw ‘uppity Jocks’ out of UK

The poll of Tory members was stark - 63 per cent were prepared to sacrifice the union for Brexit. What was remarkable was it was even higher than the percentage willing to sever the link with Northern Ireland, at 59 per cent, although these figures have to be seen in the light of an incredible 54 per cent prepared to see the destruction of their party if required to leave the EU.

That shows that it’s zealots who are now in charge of not just the destiny of the Conservative Party but of the UK with the selection of the Prime Minister.

“Genetic engineering” became too scary a phrase, so the wordsmiths created “genetic editing”. But even that must now be too scary, so we now call it “directed evolution”:

Directed evolution comes to plants

[…]

To experimentally build their directed evolution platform, Mahfouz and his colleagues used a combination of targeted mutagenesis and artificial selection in the rice plant,Oryza sativa. They took advantage of the gene-editing tool known as CRISPR to generate DNA breaks at more than 100 sites throughout theSF3B1 gene, which encodes a protein involved in the processing of other gene transcripts. After manipulating the DNA of small bundles of rice cells in this way, the researchers then grew the mutated seedlings in the presence of herboxidiene, a herbicide that normally targets the SF3B1 protein to inhibit plant growth and development.

This strategy ultimately yielded more than 20 new rice variants with mutations that conferred resistance to herboxidiene to varying degrees. In collaboration with Stefan Arold’s group at the KAUST Computational Bioscience Research Center, Mahfouz and his colleagues then characterized the structural basis of the resistance—showing, for example, how particular mutations helped destabilize herbicide binding to the SF3B1 protein.

[…]

Genetic engineering by any other name is still genetic engineering.

You know, that second tweet sums up my attitude; If Jerry Jr. wants to play hide the salami with the pool boy, or maybe he’s a swinger like Roger Stone and gets off on watching other guys nail his wife, well you know, that’s fine. It’s his business, to be honest, and that’s that.

But instead, he’s a moral scold, constantly whining about how gays are ruining America and always preaching against immorality and decadence.

And what’s worse, he wants to force his public morality (or at least, an image of it) on to everyone else - while apparently indulging in all manner of kinkiness, which he claims to abhor, behind closed doors.

Nah, see, they can totally leave any time they want, people told me so. What can you do in the face of that, we can’t be responsible for their own filth, right?! //////

The problem here is not that Biden is having his feet held to the fire for a dumb remark. It’s that it’s the only thing that gets coverage leaving the impression that it’s the only thing people are actually concerned about. Trump’s shit meanwhile gets maybe a half-a-day of coverage per sin, tops, leaving the impression that ‘oh, people must not care, it must be fine’. Even when he fucking tells us that 5 men exonerated after years of false imprisonment are still guilty on his say so and deserve death.

It’s that wonderful fucking ‘balance’ that magnifies every Dem problem because to accurately report and give appropriate coverage to all the GOP’s malfeasance is somehow ‘bias’.

To highlight this, I want to take this last paragraph:

“People look at his overall record rather than cherry-picking some of the things he says,” said [Rev. Joseph Darby, an influential African-American pastor from South Carolina], a longtime ally of Mr. Biden’s who also spoke positively about Ms. Harris and Ms. Warren. “They weren’t the examples I would use, but I don’t think that merits an apology. He was talking about the way the Senate used to work. That’s the way the Senate used to work.”

It is the way the Senate used to work. And it would be great if it worked that way again. But it isn’t going to work that way with current GOP, no matter how much someone might want it to be so.

Don’t know if anyone mentioned it earlier this week, but on Monday the Supreme Court handed down it’s opinion in Gamble v United States, regarding the dual sovereignty doctrine and the right against double jeopardy. It was a 7-2 decision to uphold the doctrine - Ginsburg and Gorsuch in dissent; Alito wrote the opinion and Thomas had a concurring opinion.

This is the opening line from Gorsuch’s dissent:

A free society does not allow its government to try the same individual for the same crime until it’s happy with the result. Unfortunately, the Court today endorses a colossal exception to this ancient rule against double jeopardy.

Alito’s opinion, for what it’s worth is basically, “this is how we’ve always done it, and it’s not really that unfair.”

Best article yet on Good Omens:

Of course, the characters who get much more of the spotlight are unarguably the most adored by Good Omens fans—the demon Crowley (played to hissing, sashaying perfection by David Tennant) and his angel co-conspirator Aziraphale (an utterly cherubic Michael Sheen). Having said that, the execution of the duo’s story was something of a shock for a fan like me, who will freely admit to shipping the heck out of the pair for ages, and even reading and writing fanfic to that end. A bunch of it. And also to dressing up as Crowley and Aziraphale for Halloween with my partner. It’s well known that Crowley/Aziraphale shippers are a sizable contingent of the Good Omens fandom, to the point where both Gaiman and Pratchett had made note that they were aware of it, with Gaiman recently noting that fanfiction and its ilk is also Making Stuff Up, which is the same as all writing—though they did say that making the duo a couple was not their intent when they wrote the book.

Which is fascinating because this miniseries is emphatically a love story.

I know, I know: They say they’re friends, what’s wrong with friendship, you friend-hating fiend. But there are endless stories dedicated to platonic friendships between two male friends. (Or male-seeming in this case, as they are truly an angel and a demon, which then ultimately begs the question of whether conventional sexuality or gender should even apply for the two of them, and it likely shouldn’t, but that’s a fairly long digression…) While modern fiction seems to have a hard time understanding that it’s possible for men and women to “just be very good friends”, the precise opposite can be said for queer people. We’re always presumed to be “just very good friends” and nothing besides. Having said that, it is entirely possible for people of the same (or similar) gender to go from being true best friends to being in a relationship of some sort. It is also possible to say “you’re my best friend” and actually mean “I love you” or even “I’m in love with you.”

the good omens miniseries is a love story and i will never recover from it

Actually it would make sense. The NRA always does better if there’s a Democratic or left leaning boogeyman to gin up the fear factor.

that may have more to do with the ups and downs of registration and fear

what im reading is that so much of their money was just pissed away - a lot of it to the board, la pierre, etc.

they’d probably be doing just fine if they were managed prudently

Triumph has several machines (Bonneville and the like) that trade on their historical image. But unlike HD they also make machines (Daytona, Speed Triple, Etc) that are modern sport bikes and in competition with the rest of the market. Finally their prices, while impacted by the dollar/euro/pound differential are still sane.

I could imagine dropping $10k for a new Triumph. No way for $50k for a HD.

Andersonville

Which a former prisoner once described thusly: “As we entered the place, a spectacle met our eyes that almost froze our blood with horror, and made our hearts fail within us. Before us were forms that had once been active and erect;—stalwart men, now nothing but mere walking skeletons, covered with filth and vermin. Many of our men, in the heat and intensity of their feeling, exclaimed with earnestness. “Can this be hell?” “God protect us!” and all thought that he alone could bring them out alive from so terrible a place. In the center of the whole was a swamp, occupying about three or four acres of the narrowed limits, and a part of this marshy place had been used by the prisoners as a sink, and excrement covered the ground, the scent arising from which was suffocating. The ground allotted to our ninety was near the edge of this plague-spot, and how we were to live through the warm summer weather in the midst of such fearful surroundings, was more than we cared to think of just then.

Trump Suggests Iran Shot Down U.S. Drone By Accident: ‘Probably’ a Mistake…’Hard to Believe It Was Intentional’

While taking questions from the Oval Office on Thursday alongside Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Trump repeatedly said “you’ll soon find out” when asked if America would retaliate following an Iranian surface-to-air missile hitting a U.S. drone flying over international waters. Eventually, Trump went into a strange tangent about how “probably Iran made a mistake.”

“I would imagine it was a general or somebody that made a mistake in shooting that drone down. Fortunately, it was unarmed. There was no man in it…Would have made a big difference,” Trump said. “I have a feeling: I may be wrong, and I may be right, but I’m right a lot. I have a feeling it was a mistake made by somebody who shouldn’t have been doing what they did. I think they made a mistake. Not just the country made a mistake, but somebody under command of the country made a mistake.”

Mark Taylor Is Still Standing By His Failed ‘Red Tsunami’ Prophecy

When radical right-wing conspiracy theorist and so-called “firefighter prophet” Mark Taylor appeared on the “Daily Renegade” program last weekend, he warned that anyone who called him a false prophet was literally risking their lives because God does not take kindly to those who attack his prophets. During that same program, Taylor struggled mightily to explain away the false prophecies he delivered prior to the 2018 midterm elections, when he repeatedly guaranteed that America would see “a red tsunami” sweep across the nation as Republicans won at every level.

The Biblical standard for a false prophet is a single failed prophecy. The prescribed punishment is death by stoning.

Imagine the detail required from Congressional staff to duplicate every granular detail of every government agency’s operations and write it into law.

Congress frequently punts the administrative details to the agency to promulgate regulations in furtherance of the goals/objectives identified by Congress, because that’s efficient use of time. Provide the subject matter experts with the ability to weigh in; instead this decision means that Congress would have to spell out these details and bog Congress down in minutiae.

That’s the fucking point - it’s a direct hit against the administrative state and “big government”. They’re aching to return to the laissez faire state where companies could do as they wish without government telling them not to pollute or defraud their customers, etc.
