This creek bed is usually dry.

That’s why when you go hiking in dry creek beds or canyons in the mountains or Sandhills you check the weather upstream first.

If you get trapped in one of those because of a thunderstorm fifty miles away, you might drown.

I watched Amazon Prime’s “Good Omens” and was not very impressed. I’m a big fan of Terry Pratchett, but this just didn’t capture the feeling of his writing IMO.

Did you read the book?

With Pratchett gone, the script was driven by Gaiman’s input.

As with any book turned into something visual, I tend to just view each of them as independent entities.

Where was I on July 20, 1969? Toddler-me was probably watching tv confused how Frank Reynolds could beat the astronauts there.*

* ABC had Reynolds’ anchor desk for the coverage situated on a mockup of the lunar landscape.

Apollo-11 landed a couple of weeks before my third birthday. My earliest reliable memories kick in when I was around three. I distinctly remember watching (at least) one lunar landing on TV prior to the ill-fated Apollo-13 mission, but I can’t say for certain if it’s Apollo -11 or Apollo-12 that I remember. I do remember being confused by the newsanchors appearing to already have their desks on the lunar surface.

“The operation was underway in its early stages when it was called off… Planes were in the air and ships were in position, but no missiles had been fired when word came to stand down.”

Well, this is … something.

After all, for all his threatening rhetoric, Trump has not been particularly anxious for a real war; it’s Bolton and Pompeo who salivate for conflict with Iran. Someone downstairs said that Tucker Carlson was contacting Trump as the voice of moderation — hate to think that dishonest racist was the hero who prevented war, but kudos to him if he was the one to stop the bloodshed for now.

How US climate deniers are working with far-right racists to hijack Brexit for Big Oil (Goes to Le Monde in English):

New evidence reveals how a tightly concentrated global network of politicians and corporations with close ties to the Trump administration is working on behalf of powerful US fossil fuel interests in Britain and Europe.

Several candidates who were in the running to become the next British Prime Minister — Boris Johnson, Jeremy Hunt, Dominic Raab, Michael Gove, Andrea Leadsom, and Steve Baker — are part of this pro-Trump network.

The evidence comes thanks to a network map produced by independent investigative media outlet DeSmog UK, exposing for the first time the astonishing array of connections between President Donald Trump, right-wing lobbies in the US, and far-right parties in the UK and Europe.

Published after a leaked recording showed US secretary of state Mike Pompeo threatening to interfere in British democracy to block opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn, the map unveils the extent to which US corporate lobbies with a direct line to senior Trump officials are backing both mainstream British politicians and European far-right extremists.

Refusal to fire employee in same sex marriage results in split between Indy school, Archdiocese (WAVE-tv)

A Jesuit high school would rather separate from its Archdiocese (Indianapolis) than fire an employee in a same-sex marriage.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WAVE) - A Roman Catholic high school in Indianapolis will no longer be recognized by the Indianapolis Archdiocese because the school refuses to fire a teacher in a same-sex marriage.

Emails were sent out Thursday afternoon from the Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School Board of Trustees to parents and school supporters advising them of the break.

The letter says Brebeuf Jesuit, an independent Catholic Jesuit school founded in 1962 by the Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus, has “always maintained control of our school’s operations and governance, including our personnel decisions.” It goes on to say, “we understand that a formal decree announcing the Archdiocese’s decision will be published in The Criterion (the archdiocesan newspaper) on or around Friday, June 21.”

South Carolina School District Seeks Three Pastors for Sex Ed Advisory Board (goes to Hemant Mehta’s Friendly Atheist blog)

Charleston County School Board put out an advert looking for three clergy members to join its advisory board for sex education.

Makeup of these boards in South Carolina goes back to a 1988 law which requires three clergy members and one medical person. This is not an issue of the school board, but state law.

Parents are fighting back against this, but it seems likely they won’t get anywhere unless they actually sue the state. (This is why such organisations as FFRF exist.)

Excuses range from “well, there’s only three out of thirteen, so they can’t enforce their will if they are too conservative” to “we need a moral voice in sex ed” (narrator: who’s moral voice).

The last time the board met, they removed sections about HIV, AIDS, contraceptives, and LGBT+ relationships, so it isn’t just the clergy who are imposing these kinds of rules on a thirteen-member board.

Yes, but so would actually attacking Iran, who will not be a pushover no matter what Bolton and company think.

Foreign powers (who, I think, already know everything they need to about DT)also have to be considering that there are 1.5 years left to DT’s term, and there may be a different administration to deal with soon. IMHO an Iranian strike would make that even more likely, but even that is not reason to go ahead with it.

For the first time ever in its existence they’ve opened the Bonnet Carré Spillway north of New Orleans twice in one year (it was completed in 1931). It’s still open as we talk, spewing 160,000 cfs of Mississippi River water into Lake Pontchartrain and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it’ll stay open for at least another month.

Meanwhile, at the NRA:

The palace intrigue at the National Rifle Association deepened on Thursday as the gun group suspended its second-in-command and top lobbyist, accusing him of complicity in the recent failed coup against its chief executive, Wayne LaPierre.

The accusation came in a lawsuit filed Wednesday night in New York State Supreme Court against Oliver North, the N.R.A.’s former president, who led the attempt to oust Mr. LaPierre shortly before the group’s annual convention in April. The complaint provides new details about the effort against Mr. LaPierre, but it is the involvement of the organization’s No. 2 official, Christopher, W. Cox, that will reverberate.

In the suit, the N.R.A. said that text messages and emails demonstrated that “another errant N.R.A. fiduciary, Chris Cox — once thought by some to be a likely successor for Mr. LaPierre — participated” in what was described as a conspiracy.

The court filing includes text exchanges in which Mr. Cox and a board member appear to be discussing an effort to oust Mr. LaPierre, though the full context is unclear. The N.R.A. is conducting an internal review of the matter, and a spokesman, Andrew Arulanandam, said on Thursday that both Mr. Cox and a top aide, Scott Christman, had been placed on administrative leave.

In other NRA news, there’s this:

The National Rifle Association is overdue on more than $1.6 million in unpaid bills, according to a new court filing made by its longtime advertising firm.

On Wednesday, Ackerman McQueen, an ad agency that has for years worked with the National Rifle Association and runs the gun group’s media arm NRATV, filed a motion for a preliminary injunction against the NRA. It’s the latest move in a brutal court battle between the ad agency and the powerful pro-gun organization.

It could also spell the death of NRATV, a pro-Trump online TV network known for its culture-war content. In the filing, the company alleges that it will have to stop paying 40 percent of its employees in one week if the NRA doesn’t pay what it owes or give the firm a $3 million letter of credit—which its contract requires if it’s overdue on its bills, according to the suit.

The ad firm is now taking steps to furlough employees who worked on NRA projects, according to a declaration from its chief financial officer filed in court.

I watched Amazon Prime’s “Good Omens” and was not very impressed. I’m a big fan of Terry Pratchett, but this just didn’t capture the feeling of his writing IMO.

Ditto. It was trying too hard to be hip and edgy, when Pratchett writes about bumbling, otherwise rather average people (or in this case angels/demons) who stumble into fantastic adventures.

State Senator Megan Hunt has a following here who would like to see her run against Ben Sasse in the next election.

It would be a tough row to hoe to pry him out of office since there are so many people who would vote for Beelzebub (R), but Nebraska is becoming less red with every election.

So, last fall I signed up for the Hulu special offer of $.99/mo for a year, for the you-have-to-watch-adverts tier.

But not only do I not like watching the commercials, but frankly so much of what these streaming services have to offer just leave me cold.

So I barely use my 99cents subscription.

Anyway, decided to check out Hulu tonight and they were pushing me to watch a new game show “Spin The Wheel” (I guess it is on Fox).

Curmudgeon that I am, most game shows leave me feel meh. This one seems, though, overly wrought. As in, trying so hard to force drama.

As if we don’t have enough real drama to deal with… I guess we need to create some more.

The first episode presents this ideal American with an ideal American family, someone who deserves to win a lot of money. It’s just right for a network audience that’s been trained to believe in apple pie, Chevrolet, and the American way . (The contestant is an adult who was a long time boy scout, who happens to have a hero story, yadda yadda yadda.)

The structure of the game is a giant wheel that is electronically controlled, allegedly random. The huge wheel has mostly cash prizes with some danger slots (losing a lot of money or even resetting to zero.)

Now, this is where the math comes in (and there is always math at 0130 in the morning.) During the last section of the game, a helper (friend or family of the contestant, selected by the latter) can secretly choose, during the spinning of the wheel, to lock in a cash take-home guarantee, which is a lot less than the built-up total the contestant has accumulated during the prior 20 minutes, but still a decent prize. So the helper, if they pull the trigger (in secret) can save the contestant if the wheel lands on lose-all slots, so the contestant has at least some money to take home.

But here’s the thing: the lose-all slots only add up to 25% of the slots on the wheel at most (during the final spin.) Prior spins the lose-all slots are fewer. So if the wheel is fair, one still has a 75% chance of hitting another slot (most of which award money, a few take away some money.)

There is never a good reason to take a 25% bet over a 75% bet, so a numerate helper will never pull the alternate-offer trigger.

But the show (via the host) really wants to play up the drama of the helper pulling the trigger.

I won’t spoil the first (and so far only) episode for you, so you’ll need to watch it to find out if the boy scout’s helper (his brother) pulled the trigger or not.

Game shows… are not really for the mathematically inclined (save perhaps Jeopardy!) Monty Hall knew this (and that is why the original Let’s Make a Deal is so better than the latter reincarnations) and played on it to great entertainment.

I believe we heard this in 2012 when Romney was running against Obama.

Christian Site: If Trump Loses In 2020, Conservatives Will Likely “Take Up Arms Against Leftist Democrats” (goes to JoeMyGod)

Matt Barber took to his site BarbWire to say that if Trump loses in 2020, conservatives will likely take up arms against “leftist Democrats.”

No mainline church has ever officially called out Liberty Council or Matt Barber for their eliminationist rhetoric.

Such claims are both agitprop (trying to spin up some wingnut to carry such things out, then Barber claims “I never told anyone to do that”) and perpetrate the deep misunderstanding by conservatives that liberals wouldn’t fight back or own guns as well.

Democrats See Hicks Testimony as Gift

“House Democrats are planning to file a lawsuit within days to force former White House counsel Don McGahn to testify on Capitol Hill — and they say Hope Hicks’ reluctant testimony Wednesday will help deliver them a crucial win in court!” Politico reports.

“Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler said Hicks’ blanket refusal to tell lawmakers about her tenure in the West Wing is the real-life illustration Democrats needed to show a judge just how extreme the White House’s blockade on witness testimony has become.”

Said Nadler: “It very much played into our hands.”

Politico: Hicks refused to answer 155 questions during House testimony.

Definitely. The statement “blow up 4 tankers” is a total mischaracterization of what happened; no one died as a result of the Iranian actions — assuming they were, in fact, responsible.

The 1942 draft was every able-bodied man, 18-34. Including the entire Ivy League student body, all of major league baseball, and the president’s and senators’ sons. There was also millions of volunteers — people too old to be drafted, too young to be drafted, the not entirely able-bodied, and women.

At the height of the war, we had 15 million soldiers in uniform on battlefields. A full 10% of the population.

The Freedom from Religion Foundation condemns the appointment of right-wing hate preacher Tony Perkins to the US Commission on International Religious Freedom by Sen. Mitch McConnell.

ffrf.org

Tony Perkins, a notorious anti-LGBTQ, anti-atheist and anti-Muslim hatemonger, has been announced as the chair of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had appointed Perkins last year to the commission, and now Perkins will be leading it for a year.

“It is ironic that someone who is so widely known for intolerance outside of his brand of American Christianity would be authorized to defend religious freedom internationally,” states FFRF Co-President Dan Barker.

Perkins is the president of the faith-based Family Research Council, which the Southern Poverty Law Center has rightly labeled a hate group. Perkins once referred to FFRF as “the Atheist Taliban,” a shocking slander that FFRF Director of Strategic Response Andrew Seidel picked apart.

Perkins has a history of repeatedly making prejudiced comments, and his organization has had a record of activism of the most dubious sort. His elevation to the commission’s leadership role is an insult to people of minority beliefs or no belief, as well as mainstream believers, around the world. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom has had a checkered reputation, and Perkins’ leadership will serve to damage it further.

Listened to Ben Rhodes on Preet yesterday. He made a good point about regime change in Iran: it will only be worse. There is no coherent democratic group that would have power to cement control. And Iran has the capability to make things even more miserable in the middle east and, frankly, by supporting terrorists, here as well.

- regime change isnt ousting (ahem) the current leaders and plopping someone else into the chairs.

- it’s 10+ years of occupation
and - at the rate of 1 troop per 10 population? 1:15? what number?

Without Impeachment, we get nothing.

Slate

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler has indicated he is going to challenge the “absolute immunity” claim in court, but it could be a lengthy litigation process, and he would have a much stronger hand if he were to open an official impeachment inquiry. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has continued to refuse to allow Nadler to open such an inquiry, citing political considerations, which has rendered and will continue to render any attempted fact finding basically toothless—and ultimately, pointless.

We watched that last night. That the wheel was electronically controlled immediately turned me off (way too ripe for bullshit).

We both were like…meh. Likely not to watch it in the future.

It was a mashup of Deal or No Deal and the numerous semi-quasi trivia shows of late. All of which survived one season. I don’t see this one making it past season one either.

I think FOX has moved beyond the simple calculus of ratings = profit. After 3 years, they have realised that they’re the President of the United States, and that they control the country and all its institutions. No doubt there is still some sort of profit motive, but it’s not as small-time as convincing old white people to buy survival seeds. It’s going to be larger, on the scale of the military-industrial complex.

Not sure if this has been mentioned already but…

THE HILL - The Republican state lawmakers in Oregon who skipped town this week to avoid voting on a climate bill are reportedly facing fines if they don’t return to the state Legislature soon.

According to a local NBC station, the state senators will be fined $500 for every day they don’t show to vote on the bill beginning Friday. Supporters have reportedly raised over $6,000 to help the Republican lawmakers cover the costs of the fines through a GoFundMe campaign.

Although the bill has already passed the Democratic-controlled state House and is poised to pass the state Senate, where Democrats also hold the majority, a number of Republican lawmakers have fled the state to deny their colleagues a quorum in the upper chamber.

Their efforts come in opposition of House Bill 2020, a major climate bill that seeks to place a cap on greenhouse gas emissions in the state.

Ahead of the bill’s scheduled vote in the state Senate on Thursday, a number of GOP state senators already threatened to walk out over concerns about a number of “energy intensive, trade-exposed” businesses in rural communities that could be hurt by the measure, including timber companies.

As a result, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown (D), who is expected to the sign the bill, authorized the state police to bring the Republican lawmakers back to the capitol.

“The Senate Republicans have decided to abandon their duty to serve their constituents and walk out,” she said in a statement on Thursday. “The Senate Democrats have requested the assistance of the Oregon State Police to bring back their colleagues to finish the work they committed to push forward for Oregonians.”

“As the executive of the agency, I am authorizing the State Police to fulfill the Senate Democrats’ request,” she continued, adding that it “is absolutely unacceptable that the Senate Republicans would turn their back on their constituents who they are honor-bound to represent here in this building.”

“They need to return and do the jobs they were elected to do,” she said.

Trump is a fucking power mad lunatic with his finger on the nuclear trigger.

He’s a reactionary know nothing who’ll respond to the last person who bends his ear.

He doesn’t care or know about the consequences of his actions, and he’ll start a war he will have no idea how to end. It’s the same with his idiotic trade war. He thought it was easy and easy to win, and it’s nothing of the sort. We’re losing bigly but he keeps lying anyways (and his cult followers buy his baffling BS).

Having a media that continues deferring to Trump and which regurgitates his statements without first identifying that they are lies, obfuscations, or exaggerations continues to do a grave disservice to everyone.

Chris Wallace casts doubt on Trump’s excuse for stopping Iran attack at the last minute

“What did you make when you learned this morning via tweet from the president that he did confirm that he called off those strikes when they learned of the casualties?” Smith asked.

“I have to say, I think it raises many questions,” Wallace explained. “First of all, we know there was a big National Security Council meeting with the president yesterday where they discussed all of this, and usually the Pentagon is very sophisticated in being able say, ‘here are various target packages, here’s what we would hit, here’s what the collateral damage would be.’ And any discussion of what collateral damage in terms of the debts on the ground would be is discussed at that point before the president gives a new order as to what various targets he wants to hit.”

So the idea that 10 minutes before the strike the president says ‘how many people are going to be killed if we go ahead with those strikes?’ that usually is discussed in depth a great deal before that — hours before that, which raises the question: this is a president who on the one hand talks very tough and has ordered strikes in the past, missile attacks against Syria for the use of chemical weapons but has also made it clear in that photo op yesterday that he does not want to get the U.S. more deeply involved in endless wars,” he continued.

Or that Trump cares about facts. He doesn’t.

The reality is that Trump blinked based on the last one to bend his ear, and the last one to bend his ear told him that it would be bad to go to war over this.

Betamax forced VHS to improve their products as Sony kept pushing new features long before VHS did.

Of course, back in that day Laserdiscs were far superior to both tape formats but never broke out of its niche following here in the States (and RCA’ s CED disk format was plagued with all sorts of mechanical problems.)

Back in the early 2000’s Pioneer had the ultimate optical disc player - CD’s, VCDs, DVD’s and Laserdisc (with a mouthwatering price to go along with it.) It was a common sight at the early anime shows back in 1999-2001.

Within the past week, a Sacramento cop was murdered. The rookie cop was helping a woman move out of a domestic violence situation. The shooter had a lengthy police record, including several times when the guy was required to hand over guns to the authorities because of restraining orders.

There’s one great predictor for whether someone will use guns to kill people - domestic violence. The GOP/NRA continue to block any reasonable acts to reduce gun violence, especially as it relates to this.

I really fucking hate this country sometimes.

I watched Amazon Prime’s “Good Omens” and was not very impressed. I’m a big fan of Terry Pratchett, but this just didn’t capture the feeling of his writing IMO.

The book is really weird for a Pratchett book. It has a lot of Gaiman influence and it shows. I’m actually surprised they managed to pull a coherent story and tone considering their differing styles.

I expect the series to have a bit more Gaiman influence tho.

Donald Trump assaulted me in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room 23 years ago. But he’s not alone on the list of awful men in my life.

The moment the dressing-room door is closed, he lunges at me, pushes me against the wall, hitting my head quite badly, and puts his mouth against my lips. I am so shocked I shove him back and start laughing again. He seizes both my arms and pushes me up against the wall a second time, and, as I become aware of how large he is, he holds me against the wall with his shoulder and jams his hand under my coat dress and pulls down my tights.

I am astonished by what I’m about to write: I keep laughing. The next moment, still wearing correct business attire, shirt, tie, suit jacket, overcoat, he opens the overcoat, unzips his pants, and, forcing his fingers around my private area, thrusts his penis halfway — or completely, I’m not certain — inside me. It turns into a colossal struggle. I am wearing a pair of sturdy black patent-leather four-inch Barneys high heels, which puts my height around six-one, and I try to stomp his foot. I try to push him off with my one free hand — for some reason, I keep holding my purse with the other — and I finally get a knee up high enough to push him out and off and I turn, open the door, and run out of the dressing room.

She is a threat, because the Berniebros are taking to her because she talks better than Bernie about how not to let the banks run everything.

imho liz will have the chance to go head to head against biden once the chaff falls out and if sanders has the grace to bow out and stop splitting the progressive vote, and then we will be able to get a real reading

Hi gang. Enjoying my birthday. I don’t especially like being 70 but it beats the alternative. I spent a productive morning yelling at clouds and threatening lawn-trampler punks with my cane. This evening, a lady friend and I will go out for dinner, for which I have fueled, cleaned and otherwise prepared the Robber Baron car. May be the last chance to drive it if gas goes to $10 a gallon because of war in the Middle East. I just hope it does not break out while I’m in Dallas.

Assume you are familiar with Texas peculiarities re common-law marriage. Might involve things like engine displacement.

I had to check which reporters invited Sarah Huckabee Sanders to a farewell gathering.

On Wednesday, two White House correspondents, Politico’s Anita Kumar and dailymail.com’s Francesca Chambers, invited fellow reporters and some Trump staffers to “farewell drinks” for Sanders at an upscale D.C. restaurant on June 24, according to a copy of the email invitation obtained by HuffPost.
Kumar is a member of the WHCA’s board, and Chambers is the organization’s treasurer. But Knox told HuffPost the WHCA had “nothing to do” with the upcoming event.

I am sure Trump Whisperer will attend too.

Like Anymouse, I’m mostly nocturnal, although I tend to go to bed earlier than he does - usually between two to four am and sleep until the crack of noon.

So, this morning I get up 11-something, start scanning Facebook and LGF, walk pass the parlor and see police cars blocking my driveway and officers at two neighboring trouble houses across the street.

Apparently, a few of the skeevy young people across the street have active warrants against them, and a truck parked in front of the house shows as stolen. The food eventually had the stolen truck tower away, but for the past few hours, I’ve had a couple of uniformed cops in my driveway taking advantage of my shady trees, keeping an eye on the house across the street.

And I’m thinking, wouldn’t the guys they’re looking for be more likely to be apprehended it the police were using plainclothes officers and unmarked vehicles and a housemate inside wasn’t probably warning the wanted via cellphone that, “Yep, the cops are still here. Stay away!”

Does this village not have unmarked cars and plainclothes officers?

Across the street from my dad’s house is a Spanish church that was once a house. One day when I visited my dad, there were a bunch of cops over there. Apparently, two white guys had attempted to rob the place, but hadn’t counted on the church volunteers showing up midweek to do cleaning. My uncle, who had been there before me, set up his small telescope as a viewing scope. It’s was funny watching, but not being able to hear, one of the guys red in the face as he’s trying to explain to the cop his side.
