Donald Trump’s Imaginary History of the National Debt

Politics • Views: 28,586

The President of the United States is frighteningly disconnected from reality, and appears to be conducting a series of reckless trade wars based on hallucinations.

It takes only a minute of simple research to find out that this entire tweet is wrong, even the words “and” and “the.”

In reality, the United States has carried a national debt since its very first days as a country, except for one year, 1835, when Andrew Jackson paid the entire debt by selling off massive amounts of Western land and vetoing public infrastructure projects like a national highway system. By January 1836, the US was carrying a debt again and it has never gone away.

President Eisenhower paid for the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 without increasing the debt by imposing gas and vehicle taxes, but in that year the national debt stood at $273 billion.

And just to top off this Trumpist layer cake of fantasy history, it should also be noted that Trump’s enormous tax cuts for the super-rich have added more than two trillion dollars to the national debt. That’s “trillion” with a T, as in Trump.

Paying off the debt also played into the panic of 1836, especially since the US wa left without a National bank. 7 years of deflation due to 2nd most economic illiterate to infest the White House.

OT I have a iPad 6th generation and I really like it. Today I got from amazon a Griffin case. I have had these cases in the past and they have provided good protection for my iPad mini and an old iPod. This case looked good when I got it but it does not have the right holes and the provided cover does not snap tight as it should. I even went to their website and I looked carefully at what they had and there is nothing that Griffin has that would fit my new iPad. I have a few good cases and I will stick with those for now. I also have reviewed that item and said it was good but did not fit my iPad. The review has not yet appeared and I am thinking of returning the item. Do you think I am doing the right thing?

Tapper is so much better at his job than you know who:

Mike Pence repeatedly refuses to say climate crisis is a threat to US

[…]

“What I will tell you is that we will always follow the science on that in this administration,” the vice-president said, in answer to CNN State of the Union host Jake Tapper’s first posing of the question.

Tapper responded: “The science says it is.”

“But what we won’t do,” said Pence, “and the Clean Power Plan was all about that, was hamstringing energy in this country, raising the cost of utility rates for working families across this country.”

Tapper interjected: “But is it a threat?”

Absotively.

I had this happen when I had to replace a broken iPad: the case of the “next” generation was *just* different enough that the old (leather) Apple SmartCase wouldn’t fit (literally 1mm longer) - and I had the unpleasant choice of the Apple covers (one model- in ugly black), or third-party. It’s a huge PITA, I know, but just typical of Apple and “their” accessories. Send it back, until you find one that fits right.

PS: I got one from Speck
Not as nice as the old Apple stuff, but decent enough.

Thanks! All of that is Buffalo China restaurant ware except for the small dish top left which is made by the Niagara Co. The single green stripe on all of it, save that one, is, coincidentally, called a Niagara pattern. re: #23 Backwoods_Sleuth

The reaction is called the “elephant’s toothpaste.” There are various descriptions, such as thoughtco.com.

The overall equation for this reaction is:

2 H2O2(aq) → 2 H2O(l) + O2(g)

However, the decomposition of the hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen is catalyzed by the iodide ion.

H2O2(aq) + I-(aq) → OI-(aq) + H2O(l)

H2O2(aq) + OI-(aq) → I-(aq) + H2O(l) + O2(g)

The dishwashing detergent captures the oxygen as bubbles. Food coloring can color the foam. The heat from this exothermic reaction is such that the foam may steam. If the demonstration is performed using a plastic bottle, you can expect slight distortion of the bottle from the heat.

Well, today’s protest in front of Apologia Church didn’t go well. It was boring for about 20 minutes, then the kids came out and started peppering me with questions. I suspect people were not thrilled with my signs, which basically said that “You are not pro-life if you think women who have abortions should be executed” and “You are not pro-life if you teach your children that women who have abortions should be executed.” I got into one woman’s face because she repeatedly told me I was going to hell (in various ways). Got it all on video, of course.

I’m going back in about 30 minutes (end of service) with two new signs, which I’m going to tape to my SUV’s windows.

They pissed off the wrong woman.

Actually, I don’t think that’s correct. He was also posting a lot of personal info about CEOs of the companies he was on an extended rant about, and I think that’s a more likely reason.

I won’t be joining any “support Barrett Brown” movement. As far as I’m concerned I’d be happy to never hear about him again, the scumbag.

Sounds to me like it went just fine

I would watch more soccer if there were more of that going on.

In 2015, the U.S. women’s side scored a goal against Japan in which I think Carli Lloyd took the shot from the mid-field circle against a goalie who got caught too far out. Just pretend that the men don’t have a team and concentrate on the women’s games. They’re way more skillful and entertaining.

Family gripped with grief over shooting death of toddler: ‘It was an accident’

Whether riding around on toy fire trucks, watching Paw Patrol or chasing the family dogs, 2-year-old Kayden Stuber was rarely apart from his grandma.

Bekki Gunter quit her job to stay in their Greenville home and help raise the boy so her daughter, the boy’s mother, could go to work, Kayden’s grandfather Tim Gunter said in an interview with The Greenville News on Friday afternoon.

“The first thing you’d hear when you wake up, you’d hear him pitter-patter right in my room, ‘Grandma? Papa?’ ” said Tim Gunter. “She would have him in the morning until he went to bed, basically.”

Kayden and Bekki Gunter had just returned home Thursday afternoon when she put her purse on her bed and went into the bathroom, Tim Gunter said.

Inside her purse was a teal-colored Glock pistol.

Within seconds, Kayden managed to unzip the purse, pull the weapon from a holster within the purse and pull the trigger, Tim Gunter said.

The child shot himself in the face, according to Senior Deputy Coroner Kent Dill.

Despite attempts by a family member to stop the bleeding, Kayden died.

“Nobody understands the situation. We’re probably one of the safest families around as far as weapons,” Tim Gunter told The Greenville News less than 24 hours after the shooting.

Tim Gunter said both he and Bekki Gunter are concealed weapon permit holders and trained in firearms safety. They decided to carry firearms in response to crime in the area and wanted to carry protection to feel safer, he said.

The grandfather’s response is just flat out evil.

I doubt y’all would think much of the old Something Awful website/message boards, but as I saw someone point out somewhere on Twitter recently, one of their moderation rules was basically “If we need to ban you, we’ll ban you. We don’t care if you haven’t quiiiiite broken a rule. If you’re an asshole for no good reason, buh-bye.”

Granted, they’re a lot smaller scale than Twitter or Facebook, but it’s a good rule for anyone who has to moderate message boards or comments…

I’ve got MSNBC on right now, and there’s a special on about the upcoming Democratic debates. There’s someone on (I’m listening from the other room) and he’s a guy that has prepped many candidates going back to Mondale for debates. He just brought up the thing about Trump hovering over Clinton in the debate in 2016 and how her choice was ignore him or turn around and “go nuts on him.”

I think that’s a false choice though, she could have simply turned around and calmly said something like “Donald, it’s not your turn, sit down.” And then let him make a fool of himself.

Mom used to get the LaChoy canned fried rice and doctor it up by slicing boned chicken thighs, draining a can of tiny shrimp and thin strips of ham, toss them in a wok with julienned green pepper and onion slices, fry them up them add the canned La Choy in the wok and last she cracked a couple eggs, fried them in a separate pan then sliced them up put them in the wok and then added bean sprouts. Made a tasty combo Fried rice dish!

Saw “Hamilton” today, it was very good. A bit hard to keep up with the rapped lyrics, especially LaFayette’s French accent. I can see how it would be difficult to make into a movie as the background set doesn’t change for the length of the play and the revolving stage turns several scenes into more of a tableau.

After assessing 39 children under the age of 18, she described conditions for unaccompanied minors at the McAllen facility as including “extreme cold temperatures, lights on 24 hours a day, no adequate access to medical care, basic sanitation, water, or adequate food.”

All the children who were seen showed evidence of trauma, Lucio Sevier reported, and the teens spoke of having no access to hand washing during their entire time in custody. She compared it to being “tantamount to intentionally causing the spread of disease.”

In an interview with ABC News, Lucio Sevier said the facility “felt worse than jail.”

Also when Haitian slaves had their… revolution? uprising? what do we call it? — and won their independence.

Except that “winning” meant France lost a chunk of valuable territory, and some rich French people lost a bunch of valuable slaves, and France wanted compensation.

In a deal brokered by the US (whose warships were just offshore, within visual range, tapping their feet and frowning), the new nation of Haiti agreed to pay reparations to France in the sum of the entire retail value of everything that was French-owned before the revolution. And of course they didn’t have that kind of cash of hand, but some helpful US banks loaned them the money at what they said was a fair and competitive interest rate, and Haiti could make monthly payments for however long it took to pay off the debt.

It took more than 100 years.

This is a big part of why Haitian economic development is more than 100 years behind what it “should” have been. It’s why they’re such a fucking poor country. Because for more than 100 years, all their economic growth was skimmed off the top and sent to American banks.

Essex council proposes £25.92 ‘lifting charge’ to help elderly up when they fall

local council has defended plans to charge pensioners £26 to help them to their feet if they’ve had a fall at home.

Don’t let Trump hear about this. He’ll privatize the service, then they’ll charge $500 and throw you in a cage if you don’t pay.

We call that Life Alert.

Er, no. Life Alert and its myriad competitors are just alert and notification companies who summon the relevant responders when a client has an emergency. Unlike the Essex Council they are not in the business of actually coming out to physically pick up people who fall, nor do they charge by the episode.

I’m actually thinking about taking up bee culture and honey production here at the Conspiracy Compound. There is a lot to learn, needless to say, and it requires a fairly substantial investment, but I do like the idea. There are some good industry groups and the climate and local environment are well suited for it.
Bee Culture is one of the best special interest magazines out there. I originally became familiar with it because of the extraordinary fact that its linear predecessor publication, known as Gleanings in Bee Culture, scooped the world by publishing the first accurate and detailed account of the Wright Brothers’ first powered flights in 1903.

Back around Easter at an arboretum I helped put up a “Bee Barn” which held and partially sheltered a set of student-constructed bee houses which we filled with precut tubes for mason or leafcutter bees to use as nesting space. I was told this past weekend that they have been working out very well and are heavily used.

Which would be a cheaper alternative if you wanted bees about for pollinating and was not concerned about getting wax and/or honey products for your troubles.

There was a lot of outrage over Arthur Laffer being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom the other week. That primarily centred on the idea that Donald Trump was diminishing the meaning of the medal, or this was somehow an aberration.

Over at The Great Orange Satan (Daily Kos), a diarist has listed out the Republican presidents who have awarded such honours, and why they got them (hint, for following conservative orthodoxy).

They have been doing this all my life. What Trump did is no different than pretty much every other Republican president in the last fifty years.

Heavy Medal (goes to Daily Kos)

Trump is not an aberration of conservatism, he is a product of it.

Back when this Website was supporting President George W. Bush, it might have missed this award, for example:

Consider, for example, the late Charles Colson. On December 10, 2008, President Bush honored the convicted Watergate felon and Richard Nixon hatchet man with the second highest award for a civilian. The Presidential Citizens Medal recognizes Americans “who have performed exemplary deeds of service for the nation.”

Erdogan’s party suffers blow after Istanbul re-run poll defeat

Turkey’s ruling AK Party has lost control of Istanbul after a re-run of the city’s mayoral election, delivering a stinging blow to President Erdogan.

With nearly all ballots counted, main opposition party candidate Ekrem Imamoglu had a lead of 775,000 votes, a huge increase on the margin of 13,000 he achieved in the earlier election.

That victory in March was annulled after the AKP alleged irregularities.

The result ends 25 years of AKP rule in Istanbul.

The AKP’s candidate, former Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, conceded to his opponent.

The Roma are facing shit again, currently/recently.

The Weekly story last week about the youngest child separated, was about a Roma family. The parents and 2 kids flew to Mexico, made their way to the border, mom and a kid were somehow left behind at a bus stop, they didn’t have cellphones and couldn’t get the fam back together right away, dad and baby after waiting at the border for two days decided to go ahead.

Dad and baby walked across the bridge AT. A. PORT. OF. ENTRY., handed their passports to CBP and asked for asylum. Totally legal so far. Didn’t matter. They took his baby from him (4 months old), put dad in detention, sent the baby to a Michigan foster family.

They told dad he could get the kid back quicker if he agreed to deportation. After a couple of months dad gave up, took the deal, and was sent back. But they still didn’t give him the baby. They even lied to him at the airport, “get on the plane and when you’re in your seat we’ll bring him to you.” They didn’t.

It took another several months before the baby was finally sent (with a CPS chaperone) to reunite with the fam.

Atheist YouTuber Holy Koolaid (Thomas Westbrook) put up a round up video to the protest against the New Independent Fundamentalist Baptist convocation atheists had in Orlando to call on the government to kill LGBT people (because Jesus).

Amongst other things, they worked with the local residents who also organised a protest, worked with the police to ensure they stayed within the law, and worked with veteran protest organisers prior to the protest to learn the methods used to ensure there was no violence during their protest.

The NIFB itself was promoting the idea they held the event there because of Florida’s stand your ground laws (they wanted to shoot protestors).

The “pumpkinphile” jab at Rev. Tommy McMurtry comes from a jab from the pulpit he made at another YouTube atheist content creator, calling him a pumpkin because “pumpkins are the largest fruits.” (He was implying that he is gay, and by extension of what he preaches, should be killed.)

That’s why all the pumpkin emojis started showing up in people’s names on social media, along with the question “is Tommy McMurtry a pumpkinphile? We just don’t know.”

That also caused the YouTuber in question (Mr. Atheist) to do a search, and viola! McMurtry didn’t own a Website with his own name. So Mr. Atheist bought it and filled it with scores of photos and drawings of people trolling the NIFB and especially McMurtry.

Caution for some adult themed art of pumpkins.

Trump Foundation: shuttered and Trump spawn prohibited from running a charity in NY.
Trump U: scam and shuttered w/settlement in NY of $25 million

It’s incredibly sick that the only reason that the media is focused on the US keeping children in concentration camps is because Republicans are making a stink about AOC correctly calling them concentration camps.

So, she’s successfully handling the media. And the only reason she gets to do that is because the media and the GOP made her a target when she won the primary. They are ignoring lesser candidates.

It’s also total bulkshit.

China doesn’t get 91% of its oil from the Gulf.

Russia provides more than 15% by itself. (100-15=85%). Now, that’d be a rounding error except that the balance includes another 10% from Angola, 2.9% from the US; 2.9% from Venezuela, Brazil with 6.8%, etc.

Below are the top 15 countries that supplied 90.6% of the crude oil imported into China during 2018.

Russia: US$37.9 billion (15.8% of China’s total imported crude)
Saudi Arabia: $29.7 billion (12.4%)
Angola: $24.9 billion (10.4%)
Iraq: $22.4 billion (9.4%)
Oman: $17.3 billion (7.2%)
Brazil: $16.2 billion (6.8%)
Iran: $15 billion (6.3%)
Kuwait: $11.9 billion (5%)
Venezuela: $7 billion (2.9%)
United States: $6.8 billion (2.8%)
United Arab Emirates: $6.7 billion (2.8%)
Congo: $6.4 billion (2.7%)
Colombia: $5 billion (2.1%)
Malaysia: $4.8 billion (2%)
Libya: $4.7 billion (2%)

Fastest growing area for imports? From the US.

The Dem “debates” are a fucking joke. They have 1 minute for making points and then there is a 30 second response? Please.

While I am all for getting points out quickly for those with addled brains who cannot follow actual policy considerations, 1 minute and 30 seconds is insane.

So I did go back to Apologia church/cult for a second round of protesting. I was out there for just shy of two hours, until 7 pm.

Let me clear. I am not a nice person. I am not inclined to cut slack to a group that teaches their children thst women should be executed for getting abortions. I am also not going cut any slack to dishonest men who go over to the Planned Parenthood in Tempe to harass women getting abortions, but who fail to tell these women that they (the guys of Apologia) think they (the women) should be executed if they go through with their abortions.

But DAMN they are a cult. One guy tried to block my sign with his body; I told he needed balloons like Scientology tried to use when I protested them. At another point, he and a woman started chanting the same thing over and over again, in unison and I laughed at them.

Speaking of the woman, she’s one of those women who had an abortion and now feels guilty about it. Well, if you go to a church where the leaders believe women should be executed for getting abortions, yeah, the guilt will be there. I will confess I was a bad feminist because I called her a bitch twice.

I also threatened to slug a guy for saying women should keep our legs closed but when he stepped out, I stepped away and put my hands behind my back.

They were incredibly frustrated with me because I generally refused to engage. Instead, I would shout, over and over again, variations on, “You go to a cult which teaches children that women who get abortions should be executed. You should be ashamed! You should be mortified!” The irony is they have a “ministry” called “Cultish” where they interview people who have been converted to their vile form of Calvinism. Sorry, going from the JWs to radical Calvinism is like jumping from the frying pan to the fire.

The only bad thing was that I probably was out there too long because I was hot afterwards and my blood sugar was through the roof at 210. (It was 111 this morning.) But I have a better idea of how long they meet so I can time it, and I can always sit in my SUV, covered with signs, to wait for them to come out.

What the guys of Apologia cult are going to learn is that I’m tenacious.

I would protest our Christian Identity church in this area but they’re dangerous and they have access to guns. (CI is one of the organisations I won’t quibble over with the True Christian label, because they aren’t even close to anything in the Bible.)

As for “bad feminist,” I don’t think I’m the arbiter of who is a feminist and who isn’t, but I don’t recall hearing that feminists had to behave or speak in a certain way.

As for slugging someone, that would be what they want. That gives them the absolute right to defend themselves. Open carry is legal in Arizona, and it has no requirements for concealed carry. You can bet one of those wingnuts has a gun.

Like the NIFB wingnuts in Orlando the other day who specifically hoped for violent protestors so they could exercise Florida’s stand your ground laws, I have no doubt the folks in that church you picket would hope for the same.

There was a far right music festival in Ostritz, Germany this weekend. In order to discourage the Neo-Nazis, the town made all the beer disappear (dailykos.com):

“Beer and marching songs may have fuelled Adolf Hitler’s rise to power, but neo-Nazis faced an alcohol ban at a German rock festival at the weekend.

The ban was a new tool in the fight against neo-Nazi influence. Some 2,000 locals in the eastern town of Ostritz also rallied against the far right.

Police seized 4,200 litres (924 UK gallons) of beer in Ostritz on Friday, then 200 litres more on Saturday.

Locals also bought more than 200 crates of beer in the town’s supermarkets….

….An Ostritz society activist, Georg Salditt, told Germany’s popular Bild daily: “The plan was devised a week in advance. We wanted to dry the Nazis out. We thought, if an alcohol ban is coming, we’ll empty the shelves at the Penny [supermarket].”

Before he was co-opted by Trump, Jon Huntsman was Obama’s ambassador to China, which given his knowledge of Mandarin, was clearly a superior position to his current posting to Moscow. The Huntsman family are real billionaires, with a record of service to this country. Maybe they are finally awakening from their allegiance to the Trump party.

Except for that little dust up in the XIX Century where they made war on migrants crossing Utah, Mormons have generally been welcoming of immigrants and asylees. Having been run out of several areas, they tend to support others in that position.

The Mormon church’s position on immigration and immigrants tends to chap the hides of local Republican fanatics, which pleases me.

Of course, it wasn’t until 1978 that the Mormon Church finally decided that African-Americans deserved full equality in their church.

They haven’t done that for women yet (though to be fair to the LDS, most churches haven’t).

Supreme Court strikes down IP law prohibiting trademarks with immoral or scandalous words.

The town of Fucking, Austria, produces a pale ale (Helles Pils) marketed as “Fucking Hell”. The UK tried to ban it, but the EU ruled that any registered trade mark was acceptable and valid anywhere.

So I don’t know if Brexit will cost them their Fucking Hell.

And they also better stock up on wine from the our favorite winery in Schweigen-Rechtenbach.

Here in NW PA we have had to cut out the woods portion of our high school cross country races a couple times because of bear sightings. On one occasion I sighted a bear cub at the edge of the woods and alerted the race officials, which we both went and visually verified that yes it was a bear cub. No woods portion of the race that day.

Looks like Trump is imposing new sanctions on Iran.

President Trump announced on Monday that he is imposing new sanctions on Iran, after saying for days that he preferred tightening the pressure on a crippled Iranian economy to launching an immediate military strike in retaliation for what American officials have said are recent aggressive acts by Tehran.

“We will continue to increase pressure on Tehran,” Mr. Trump said as he sat at his desk in the Oval Office preparing to sign an executive order. “Never can Iran have a nuclear weapon.”

He added that the order will bar Iranian leaders from access to financial instruments. The administration did not immediately elaborate.

The Trump administration already moved this spring to cut off all revenues from Iranian oil exports, the lifeblood of the nation’s economy, and the new sanctions are expected to be aimed at shutting down additional sources of income with the goal of forcing political change in Tehran.

Trump consistently says that he’s making us safer, when the reality is the opposite.

He’s making us more vulnerable.
He’s increasing the chances for nuclear proliferation.
He’s undermining our strategic partners and allies and enabling our rivals and enemies.
He’s sabotaging functioning government and doesn’t have anyone leading key departments that have been confirmed (DHS, DOD, etc.), despite claiming that we’re in a national emergency.

The only national emergency is the one Trump manufactured, and which his people are making worse to maximize harms on nonwhites and to implement a white nationalist/xenophobic policy.

We wont get that either, because no one will stick their neck out and watch the US withdraw support at the key moment.

Trump’s trying to gain support for a coalition, but there’s no one beyond the Saudis and Gulf States who’ll go for this, and they’re all self-interested in doing what Iraq couldn’t do in 8 years - beat Iran - without having to pony up for it (Trump’s intent on doing what he claims he’s out to stop - being the world’s policeman and doing the work others can’t or wont do). They’re hoping to suck the US into another costly war that will spike oil prices and help no one but a privileged few in the Persian Gulf, and Putin.

Oh, and it’d also help the Maduro regime too, because high oil prices will help oil exporting countries. We’d all pay more for this insanity.

Morrisey - ex-frontman of The Smiths - seems to have gone Full Metal Wingnut (though I do believe the proper nomenclature in the UK is “swivel-eyed loon”).

Morrissey has spoken in praise of Nigel Farage in a wide-ranging interview where he claimed “everyone ultimately prefers their own race”.

A transcript of the interview with photographer Sam Esty Rayner, which was conducted in April but only just published, has appeared on Morrissey’s official website.

The ex-Smiths frontman praised Farage, saying: “it’s obvious that he would make a good prime minister”, but clarified that he had never supported UKIP.

Asked if he is a Brexiteer, he said he didn’t vote, but said: “I can see how there is absolutely nothing attractive about the EU,” and added that the referendum should be respected.

Also:

The singer-songwriter reiterated that he “absolutely” supports far-right party For Britain. He heaped praise on leader Anne-Marie Waters, who in 2017 stood for UKIP leadership on an anti-Islam platform.

“The UK is a dangerously hateful place now,” he said. “I think we need someone to put a stop to the lunacy and to speak for everyone.”

Morrissey said he has never heard Waters say anything racist - a word he has repeatedly said is “meaningless” anyway.

“If you call someone racist in modern Britain you are telling them that you have run out of words,” he said in the interview. “Everyone ultimately prefers their own race … does this make everyone racist?

“The people who reduce every conversation down to a matter of race could be said to be the most traditionally ‘racist’,” he said.

“Diversity can’t possibly be a strength if everyone has ideas that will never correspond. If borders are such terrible things then why did they ever exist in the first place? Borders bring order.”

The Holocaust caused the death of between 25 and 50% of the entire Romani population, but I guess their deaths don’t matter to Shmuley.

Somebody has probably already written this by now, but my understanding of “holocaust” is that the specific word was coined specifically to refer to the genocide of jewish people in WWII era. It doesn’t mean that only jewish people were murdered, systematically or otherwise, it was just a term appropriated to refer only to the jewish component of the overall atrocities. So we need another term to refer to either the overall murderous actions of the nazis or several terms to cover romani, lgbtq, disabled, poles, slavic people, the list is long.
