June 20, 2019 | Bob Boilen — In the course of a few songs at the Tiny Desk, Imogen Heap took us through her many musical talents. The concert began with her old Frou Frou musical partner, Guy Sigsworth — and their first new song in 17 years — and ended with an extraordinary demonstration and performance of her high-tech musical gloves.

Imogen Heap not only has an enchanting voice but also the talents of a world-class audio engineer. She’s completely engrossed in a technology she’s helped to develop, one that makes it possible to alter sounds, create loops and compose tunes all with the wave of her glove-wearing hands. The high-tech gloves, now called Mi.Mu Gloves, were first shown at a TEDGlobal conference eight years ago. Her performances, with her sound-altering arm and hand gestures, resemble a summoning of spirits, a far more compelling live experience than what Imogen said used to look like she was standing behind her laptop checking email.

And though there’s not been a new Imogen Heap album since 2014, this Tiny Desk Concert includes a reworking of “Hide and Seek,” the song that made her a household name, and one she reimagined for the Broadway play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

It’s a thoroughly enchanting Tiny Desk Concert.

Recall elections for federal judges would have drastically hurt the civil rights movement (let’s not pretend that the south wouldn’t have been all Jim Crowy if Roosevelt was elected in 1912).

re: #212 retired cynic

How Post Offices Can Beat Payday Lenders by Michael Waters in Washington Monthly.

Living outside a very small town in the smallest county in Illinois, I am a very strong supporter of the post office, and absolutely appalled at any efforts to cut it back or privatize its services. This amendment gives me something else to support. I know people around here who do not have any banking options except payday lenders, and it makes my hair stand on end. I hope they are successful (but bet there are going to be corporations fighting this hammer and tongs).

Same here. There has been no bank in my town in decades. (There are no payday lenders around here either.)

The nearest banks (forget Internet banking since almost no one here has Internet service - and even though I do I wouldn’t trust that as far as I could throw my car) are in opposite directions from town, both sixteen miles away. Each town (pop 68 and 1,100) has one bank.

The lack of banking services around here is why almost all business is conducted with cash. Few businesses even accept a credit card (but almost all accept personal cheques if they know you).

He has a scary number of followers.

There are hordes of people like him, which is why I note that just as women have to be concerned about every unknown man they meet, I have to be concerned about every unknown Christian I meet. (Christianity has a two thousand year history of killing those they disagree with.)

It isn’t gay or atheist mobs who blow up abortion clinics or justify slavery and secession using the Bible.

re: #38 Deep State SuperElite Satinist

That’s pretty much the opposite of what the Bible says.

Depends on what part of the Bible you read. The Bible justifies genocide in the name of God.

For example, Exodus 21 is pretty clear on who you can enslave, for how long, what punishment you get for mistreating a slave (none if he doesn’t die within a few days), how you can hand them down as your property, &c.

The New Testament tells slaves to obey their masters, even the cruel ones.

And most Christians believe that the Bible is either handed down by God or inspired by him.

When you try to get the majority to explain that bit on slavery, they will hem, haw, claim it was a different time, it was really indentured servitude (which itself is immoral), it wasn’t the same as antebellum slavery in Dixie (it absolutely was), &c.

Those deflections don’t just come from fundamentalists either. I have yet to hear a Christian say “the Bible is wrong, slavery is immoral.” In fact, many fundamentalists are fine with slavery.

over an inch of rain in about half an hour, and a shitload of tree damage due to high winds.

bishop-accountability.org

Daily news article entries about child sexual abuse in every denomination of church, from news articles. No church is exempt from the scourge of its leaders abusing children.

Daily. The site goes back years.

It’s sort of like gun violence. There are daily shootings, but because they only get local coverage, the scale of the problem really isn’t seen.

The scale of child sexual abuse in churches dwarfs anything the Q-nuts think is going on in pizzerias. Every dime that goes into a collection plate supports hiding child sexual abuse in the same way every dime going to the NRA supports shootings.

there’s an Ohio-Kentucky joke that was popular when I was a kid:
Fishermen on either side of the Ohio River were having a conversation but were tired of yelling back and forth, so one said “hold on, let me turn on my flashlight and you can walk over on the lightbeam.”

Christian here. Slavery is wrong, period, end of story. The writers of the Bible got it wrong. That’s why I cannot accept the Biblical texts as inerrant or infallible. Because there are things in the texts that are flatly immoral, illegal or just plain *wrong*. I’m not afraid to state this in front of Evangelicals/Fundamentalists, either. Two of the worst things to happen to Christianity were the closing of the canon in the 4th century and the rise of Fundamentalism in the early 20th century. Both of these things have brought a sclerotic hardening of the arteries to spiritual life.

That said, I take the Biblical texts very seriously, since there are so many people out there who want to thwack others over the head with their interpretations of same. Oddly enough, the Evangelicals/Fundies that I picket get all upset when I quote the Bible at them. Apparently, since I don’t believe it came straight down from heaven, I can’t quote it at them. Sure I can.

“Who stood up on that stage this week and attempted to reach any disaffected Trump voters?” she complained. “Moderates? Independents? I guess in the Democratic Party, those folks don’t matter. They’re not important, they don’t count.”

Cupp assumed the majority of the population shares her Republican views.

“Here’s the deal, telling a majority of voters that they’re wrong has to be one of the dumbest strategies I’ve ever encountered,” she claimed.

“In fact, the winner of both debates might have been Donald Trump,” Cupp argued.

Trying to appease the centrists of both the Democratic and Republican parties has ruined every single chance of moving this country forward since LBJ. Centrism is a political viewpoint and it has poisoned the Democratic Party, the Republicans purged theirs.

Yeah I’m not feeling sympathetic to them at all. They need to get it through their heads that the centrist to liberal Democratic Party isn’t supposed to be helping them because their ideology and party are morally bankrupt right now.

Trying to appease the centrists of both the Democratic and Republican parties has ruined every single chance of moving this country forward since LBJ. Centrism is a political viewpoint and it has poisoned the Democratic Party, the Republicans purged theirs.

Their problem is they think they’re moderates. Biden is a moderate as is Bill Clinton, Cupp is not. She’s a right winger.

Makes perfect sense if you view it as a way of justifying voting for Trump but also denying that you’d side with Trump.

Why did you make them do that, liberalism?

That the thing about Never Trumpers; they deny that Trump is continuous with the previous strategies and arguments of US conservatism, but use exactly the same tactics. They take hostages, they create problems to solve, they operate from the basic premise that their opponents are a priori unserious and themselves a priori credible. They’re doing it right now, they’re just using slightly elevated language…

…because like Trumpers they believe in a natural hierarchy in which they are better than “liberals” (in the loosest, approaching-meaningless sense), they just derive that sense of superiority from different signifiers. And they despise Trumpers for upending their genteel oligarchy in favor of a populist oligarchy whose eruptions inconvenience them.

126
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jun 29, 2019 • 6:06:05pm

Take this from the FJ poll last December:

Trump Approval Sky High in Ag

“We’re all a little frustrated with what China has done on the soybean side, and just the whole grain marketing thing,” Ohio farmer Jed Bower told AgriTalk Radio host Chip Flory on Wednesday’s broadcast. “But I think we all realize that something needed to be done as far as trade overall. We’ve been taken advantage of for a long time… Now we have a president that’s willing to take on those battles.”

The basis of Trump support in fly-over country is resentment. They resent being called “fly-over”, even though it’s the hate-mongers like Rush Limbaugh who used that term prominently.

That’s why they like those maps that show huge swaths of the continent in red. To make up for something or other.

Trump is bad for farmers in multiple ways. He just exploits there resentments.

“Richard”, was Obummer & Billie C moral presidents? “Susan Gilman”, at least Trump knows how to put in a full days work. Instead of coasting like Obummee and being a white house playboy like Billie C. “Dave” from “Auburn” 9:34 post = huge 10-4 !!! “Just Shocked”, you made two mistakes - Republican and Trumpster. It desperately needs replacing with Democrat. Fits them to a big tee. “Old Testament Farmer”, is that you Jim Martindale? “Billy Bob” hit the nail on the head. “Chuck”, were is your proof of that idiotic statment you made? Do yourself a favor and quit listening to CNN. Remember, it is considered your cheesehead state was the tipping point to assure trumpee won the election. So it sounds like rest of your residents are smarter than you are. “Loren”, do you surmise the consumers are feeling the tariff pain at the checkout counter? “Doug”, “Dave @ 7:27”, “Rick”, “Bob” = 10-4 ! “Bill”, as I have stated before, at least trump has the guts to tackle China, unlike our previous presidents. Do you really expect no repercussions upon any of us US residents, no matter our profession? “Bob Apple”, the liberals are always complaining, even when there party has majority control. (Can you say Obummeeeee!) “scott”, you are quite naive yourself with what obummer did with creating a hyper inflated US$ and debt. Plus stagnating the economy. “Richard”, certainly Hillary has absolutely no morals. So just based on that alone, why would anybody have voted for her? “Steve”, that’s right, feed some more pure bullcrap about Obummer’s economy recovery. Quit listening to him, CNN & NPR. “Froggy”, do any of your democraps qualify as “dip shit”? The answer is, they sure do. Can you say Chuckie, Nancy, Elizabeth, Maxine, AOC, them muslim congresswomen, Bernie, etc, etc. “PJ Jahn”, as usual, you did an excellent job describing your wonderful DemoCrap party!

That is the typical Trump has supporter.
