9,500 - almost HALF that number - are in a racist & sexually violent secret CBP Facebook group.

The other half aren’t “joiners”.

Donald Trump says that homelessness didn’t exist until 2 years ago and also that police officers get sick just by walking near homeless people

So I didn’t exist twelve years ago.

Conservatives have always used these “whataboutism” arguments such as what about homeless vets?

When I was a homeless vet, they didn’t give a shit about me. I’m guessing it wasn’t liberals who did things such as spit on me.

I am looking at what is kind of a competition board on Duolingo. You earn points for every lesson you complete. There are about 12 exercises in each lesson, so, if you spend about 20 seconds per exercise, you can end up taking a out four minutes, though some of them take me longer. You can get between 10 and 15 points per lesson.

Now check out the first place person this week:

Duolingo screen

Your points reset at midnight GMT Monday morning if I have my time zones correct (7pm Sunday here in central time). So it’s been 28 hours since the points started. 4600 points in 28 hours is 164 points an hour. So roughly 12 lessons an hour for all of those hours. My conclusion is that the first place figure is a robot. There’s just no way a person is doing that.

That privilege does not extend to the admission of a crime in a confession.

LOL. Apparently that person was a victim of auto-correct.

On the statement from the Vatican today about confession being inviolate, from that CBS article:

The statement came as a bill makes its way through the California legislature that would require clergy members to report confessions of sexual abuse. The legislation could force California priests to choose between breaking the law and violating the seal of the confessional. Seven other U.S. states have such laws on their books, as does Ireland and two of Australia’s eight states. Similar laws are being debated in Chile.

Indian diplomat likens Ivanka Trump to ‘half-wit Saudi prince’ ahead of summit where she will lead US delegation (The Independent, 2017)

Ivanka Trump has reportedly been likened to a “half-wit” Saudi prince by an Indian diplomat after it was announced she would lead the US at a summit in southern India.

Donald Trump on Thursday announced that his daughter, who works for him as an official unpaid adviser, would head the country’s delegation at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in November.

An unnamed Indian diplomat told Bobby Ghosh, the editor-in-chief of the Hindustan Times: “We regard Ivanka Trump the way we do half-wit Saudi princes. It’s in our national interest to flatter them.”

Even amateur liberal comedians know that when making class-based comedy, punching up is what you do.

Hence the White House’s attack today on the “haters” on Twitter. Mockery is one of the few tools the poor can use against the wealthy and powerful. There’s a reason conservatives like Trump want to “open up libel laws.”

I imagine if I had to defend myself in court against a wealthy douchecanoe (like Wonkette is doing right now against Don Blankenship) I would be crushed because my wealth would fund a lawyer for about two hours.

Even when I was a child!
No LGBTQIA+ have ever shown up and asked me to become one of them. Ever.
All they’ve ever asked is to be allowed to be who they are. Religions can’t say that; their existence is dependent on conversions.

Yes, but it is a matter of religious belief among many that gayz have to recruit, preferably among the young and impressionable, as they cannot reproduce and are an unnatural abdomination unto the Lord.

From 2017:

These 5 companies are subtly spreading religious messages — and many customers have no idea (goes to Business Insider, from 2017)

Chick-fil-A and Hobby Lobby are obvious. BI calls out other businesses hiding religious messages in packaging.

Forever 21 shopping bags have “John 3:16” printed on them.

“It shows us how much God loves us,” Forever 21 founder Do Won Chang told CNN in 2012. “The love he gave us, by giving us his only son, Jesus, was so unbelievable to me. I hoped others would learn of God’s love. So that’s why I put it there.”

In-N-Out prints several Bible verses on its packaging.

Whataburger displays in most locations the anti-Communist addition to the Pledge of Allegiance “One Nation Under God.”

My wife gets called Betsy Ross here because she repairs village flags.

Conservatives hijacked other symbols for racism such as the OK sign and the Gadsden Flag, so it would not surprise me they would hijack the so-called Betsy Ross flag. Apparently Nike thought it was concerning enough they chose to not produce a shoe with that flag on it because of that.

(We’ll skip the part of the Flag Code where it says you should not wear the flag as apparel.)

Will Trump administration’s play to ban end-to-end encryption backfire? (goes to Silicone Angle)

Joining other western countries, the Trump Administration is said to be considering effectively banning end-to-end encryption by mandating back doors, according to a Politico report late last week.

End-to-end encryption is a system of communication where only the communicating users can read the messages. Providing the ultimate level of privacy to users, the system is also a bane for law enforcement because messages cannot be intercepted and read.

Law enforcement is making the push to ban end-to-end encryption. A National Security Council meeting heard Wednesday that effectively banning it by mandating back doors would make it easier for law enforcement and intelligence agents to access suspects’ data.

But ending end-to-end encryption would also create a security nightmare that makes it easier for hackers to steal data as well, a number of security experts told SiliconANGLE this week.

JIM VIBERT: Michael de Adder’s pen, the sword and Donald Trump (Goes to the Halifax Chronicle Herald, opinion piece, more at the link):

A free press has to be a fearless press, but in New Brunswick — where the newspapers, like many things, are Irving-owned — there doesn’t appear to be much of that these days.

In Saturday’s edition of The Chronicle Herald, Donald Trump was the subject of two editorial cartoons from the proficient pen of Michael de Adder. One was heart-wrenching — a poignant depiction of human tragedy and the inhumanity of one man’s response. The other was simply prescient.

But in de Adder’s native province of New Brunswick, neither of those cartoons would appear in the Irving’s Brunswick News papers, which include the three city dailies and most of the weeklies.

The Irving-owned papers have a standing — if unacknowledged — prohibition on editorial cartoons that might offend the American president who lies as a first impulse; cozies up to murderous tyrants; is an accused serial rapist; finds moral equivalency between neo-fascist white supremacists and those who oppose them; relied on Russia’s help to win the presidency in 2016 and is open to more of the same in 2020, and who does violence to the foundational principles of American democracy with a regularity that’s no longer shocking but should be.

I’m off to bed. One more from the Washington Post:

A library canceled an LGBT prom after backlash. Then a church stepped in. (Refers to an event in Jacksonville, Fla.)

When the Storybook Pride Prom for LGBT teens in Jacksonville, Fla., was canceled after online conservative backlash, a local church made sure the story had a happy ending.

The Willowbranch Library in Jacksonville originally organized the event, inviting 14- to 18-year-olds to come in costume as their favorite book characters, with a dress code of “casual, formal, or in drag — whatever makes you feel great. Be you!” Over 100 teens planned to attend.

When the event caught the attention of a conservative blogger who encouraged her nearly 700,000 Facebook followers to call the library to complain, the Jacksonville Public Library canceled the event last week amid fears for the teens’ safety — to the outrage of many local parents and community members.

Ultimately, the kids got their dance. The Buckman Bridge Unitarian Universalist Church in Jacksonville stepped in and held the prom Friday, the same night as the original event at the neighborhood’s library.

My wife once headed off that sort of issue in our village library.

It turns out public libraries are another place conservatives are bringing their culture wars (to subvert libraries to religious proselytisation).

In our town’s case, the issue was whether a religious group could hold services in the library (when it was closed).

She went to the library board with data from across the country about religious groups trying to use libraries as free churches funded by the taxpayers.

The board voted instead to charge any religious group the same as any other group who wanted to use the public library for a private purpose.

Suddenly, the religious group in question was no longer interested in our library. Probably just as well, as they were not a local group. They were an Astroturf group.

In a nation as wealthy as ours, there shouldn’t be any homelessness, and it’s a sign of priorities and failings by government to support those least able to help themselves.

Far too many of those who are homeless are veterans or those with mental health issues, or both. The same GOP that loves military parades and photo ops with the soldiers in uniform behind them wont lift a finger to help the struggling soldier after they leave service with PTSD or depression or alcoholism.

Why do so many flock to cities like SF or LA or Seattle or NY? Because those cities tend to have more compassionate policies, but even then they get overwhelmed by the numbers, and the system is still failing those in need.

It shouldn’t have to be.

Whataburger and In-n-out are more than willing to take my atheist money. The whataburger here in Red Texas hired the transgender friend of my son while he (the friend, after transition) was in high school.

I remember the big spike in homelessness starting with the Gramm-Latta budget cuts in 1981 that decimated Section 8 housing assistance.

All of a sudden property owners booted lower income people out of their apartments and tossed them into the streets.

Oh I remember Phil Gramm saying that those people were lazy and Pulpit Pimps like James Robinson said they were “spiritually deficient”.

Oh and ol’ President Pruneface would be droning about how the churches would gladly step in and provide the needy with real help. Of course they didn’t.

AND: there are a non-trivial number of wingnuts who get seriously bent-out-of-shape over Black History Month, too: especially if it veers away from the blandest sort of “Great Accomplishment” thumbsucking, and, you know, actually examines actual American attitudes towards Black folks….

But Pride Month has to do with TEH GHEY!!11!!1!, which still pushes a lot of peoples’ buttons. We can (rightly) mock the wingers gibbering away about “proselytizing Oreos” or whatever, but sex/sexual identity stuff still hits uncomfortably home for too many.
Especially when they just have to throw GOD!!!! into it…..

Well, you see, they MUST fight the gay because their all-loving, all-powerful, completely just, god will indiscriminately kill EVERYONE INCLUDING CHRISTIANS if the US continues to accept gays (and abortion). It’s right there in the book.
Of course, the rest of us actually will be harmed by climate change which they refuse to accept. Until they eventually twist it around to be the means by which their god is destroying the earth because of human depravity.

Trump says that homelessness began on his watch? Because that’s the implication.

I’m guessing it’s a misquote/mis-cite: if anything, I would expect Trump to tweet that homelessness was a “national emergency”/disaster right up until he took office, after which it disappeared, and things have never been better…..

Exactly. Sixty years of demonizing, other-izing, fear mongering, lying to create an army of rubes. All so they would keep power. But the more they riled the rubes, the more the rubes noticed even their republican reps weren’t taking action. In religious terms, they think of Trump as a false prophet. They will not accept responsibility for their actions.

for many people, politics is learned the same way as religion…

- All religion is second hand, or more hands removed, information. Everything you think you know about your religion was taught to you by someone else.

How did they learn it to teach it to you?

You heard nothing and saw nothing yourself. It’s just what other people maybe saw and mostly just what they say that other people before them heard or saw or told them.

Even if you personally witnessed a “miracle”. Unless you critically evaluate and proved it then you don’t know there’s not a “normal” scientific explanation or you were fooled by someone…hoaxed.

It’s almost all appeal to apparent authority. And not even that good authority.

Generation upon generation of interpretations of a questionable and multiple times translated, edited, and reorganized book. Those interpretations and translations themselves were argued about and compromised and evolved over time.

- Most politics is the same way. Most people don’t “know” much. They heard or were told or read a web site, heard part of a speech or other questionable source…

And so it’s all second or more hands, skewed, interpreted, and selectively so. They do not research or do critical thinking or analysis. Just second hand say-so.

It all becomes a meaningless cult like following.

The thought process is the problem, not just the gullibility Due to the fundamental lack of desire to learn and know.

- There is no cure for this.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge in the U.K. developed an online game to help people learn to identify disinformation. The researchers found people could learn to preemptively debunk (“pre-bunk”) fake news after they are exposed to, or “inoculated” against, disinformation techniques. The researchers asked users of the online game to rate the reliability of a series of headlines and tweets before and after playing it. They found players’ perceptions of the reliability of fake news dropped by an average 21% after completing the game, while having no impact on how players perceived authentic news. Moreover, participants who were most vulnerable to false news headlines at the start exhibited the greatest “inoculation” against it after playing the game.

Add to that the deinstutionalization of the mentally ill. Instead of housing those vulnerable populations in mental health facilities, they were cast out to fend for themselves, and we’ve been struggling to deal with that ever since.

Freedumb is more important than caring for the needy.

Odd, I see no indication of malice or hate, no portrayals of her performing sex acts, just images parodying of the situation of a President’s daughter with no political, administrative or diplomatic background trying to insert herself into world events.

I see two videos, one from the French, the other from the White House, showing her to be a complete incompetent fool. Just like her daddy.

The thought process is the problem, not just the gullibility Due to the fundamental lack of desire to learn and know.

- There is no cure for this.

We all need to believe in something in order to continue, it is just a question of how much you need to ascribe to faith and how much you can attribute to nature, science, your own observations, etc.

And some people seem to need more than just a personal faith in something bigger, they need an entire social and institutional structure to guide them through daily life.

- really? why?

- 2nd point. you do understand how the government functions, right? mueller’s report was prepared for the executive branch. the legislative has the power of oversight - over which you have absolutely no control or say. And they’ve barely begun, mostly because they’re being stonewalled by…. the executive

So I once got an unsolicited mail from an “attractive young Russian girl”.

I had just gotten my Cyrillic keyboard installed and needed the practice, so I decided to enter into a correspondence with this person. I figured that as soon as she asked for money, I would simply drop it.

Oddly enough, she did not, she said that she had just received a bonus from work and wanted to come out and visit me at her own expense.

But things did not quite add up, so I googled “Russian women + scam” and found a site from the US State Dept describing the way they got around asking directly for money: namely after they announce you the date that they are coming and even giving flight information and everything, you go to meet them at the airport.

But they do not get off the plane. Then you receive an urgent message, they are there, but have been detained by Customs and Immigration, they just need to show that they have € or $ 2,000 in cash in order to be allowed into the country.

If you could just wire it over, they can get through customs and will give it right back…

Is that due to the State’s oil fund running low? ISTR that a combination of lower production, lower world oil prices, and increased population had made significant dents in the funds that Alaska had been handing out as bribes to get people to move there share-the-wealth incentives.

Nazis blocked entrance to Holocaust exhibition

[Visby] A group of Nazis from the Nordic Resistance Movement, NMR, blocked the entrance to Fotografiska’s exhibition with portraits of the Holocaust at lunchtime on Tuesday. They also entered the premises.
- Fucking mythomaniacs, screamed one of them inside the room, a witness tells Expressen.
The famous photographer Sanna Sjöswärd has portrayed and interviewed survivors for the exhibition “Fading Stories - pass them on” in a collaboration with Raoul Wallenberg Academy.

Seven unique portraits of survivors are currently displayed in Fotografiska’s exhibition room on St. Hansgatan 24 in central Visby. They form part of a larger exhibition which is shown at Fotografiska in Stockholm from August 27 - on the national day for civil courage and humanity. At 12 o’clock on Tuesday, a group of Nazis from the Nordic resistance movement suddenly appeared at the entrance. A woman who would visit the exhibition tells that they blocked the entire entrance. - But I passed them. Then three Nazis followed and also went into the room. Once inside, one of them yelled “fucking myths”, according to several witnesses.

No.

The size of the eruption appears far smaller than anything that would affect the global climate.

Eruption size is measured on a scale (VEI - volcano explosivity index).

VEI of 4 or more can have some effect. Vesuvius was a 5. Krakatoa was a 6. Tambora (1815) was a 7. Yellowstone supervolcano eruption 600,000 years ago was a 8.

I’m definitely being brought over to the camp that the Dems are falling down on the job badly right now, but at the same time, I cannot overstress enough that, if Dem leadership is fearing some sort of underground swell of Trumpism, it’s because the press has continually left the impression that Trumpists are all that matter, all that exists in this country, and that nothing Trump matters because Dems are always the wrong ones and they will go blue in the face to crow so every single hour of every day.

Between this and the fact that the Senate honestly seems to basically have veto power over anything the House could actually do up to and including impeachment, I can understand where the hold up is. Does anyone honestly believe the media would cover even impeachment inquiries in a way that wouldn’t amount to ‘TRUMP EXONERATED, DEM SHOW THEY HATE AMERICA’ as blaring subtext to every inch and minute of coverage?

Why Ivanka Trump didn’t belong anywhere near the DMZ or the G-20 summit by Carrie Cardero, WaPo

President Trump, of course, has discarded many other norms; it’s tempting to wonder why we should spend time focusing on the activities of his daughter, which might seem benign, if embarrassing for our country. The reason is because those activities are not benign. They are part of the president and his administration’s deliberate effort to concentrate control of the executive branch within the White House and within his family, diluting important institutional mechanisms that provide accountability. …

So the president’s boosterism of his daughter on major diplomatic efforts should not be viewed as an isolated act of incompetence or even public relations. Instead, it is part of his preference to concentrate power among a few advisers, especially those related to him, advisers who are beyond the reach of our institutional checks and balances. This is not the way the presidency or our government is supposed to work. And it is not a development that Americans should accept without objecting, loudly.

McDonald’s is developing voice-activated drive-throughs and robotic deep-fryers, in an effort to improve its restaurants’ speed of service. Both systems are undergoing testing in Chicago, and company executive Mason Smoot said the technology is intended to help, not replace, McDonald’s employees. The drive-through system uses voice-recognition software, as customers read off their orders and confirm them on a digital display. Competing fast-food franchises also are investing in technology, as Domino’s Pizza tested voice-activated over-the-phone ordering last year.

And when they develop a robot customer to pay for their scab robot crap, the circle of tripe will be complete.

re: #345 DangerMan

her only qualification for being there is “the good looking daughter of the president”

She’s not even all that good looking either. I mean, she is very attractive, but it feels like if you look at a thousand attractive blondes, you might remember all of them…except her.

She manages to take attractiveness, and be mediocre at it.

All she SHOULD need to do to be attractive is just…do nothing. She manages to fail at that. I do not understand how that is possible, even for a family so steeped in fuckuppery.

I suspect this is the “emergency” that interfered with Pence’s plans.

House Democrats filed a lawsuit Tuesday in federal court seeking access to President Trump’s tax returns, accusing the Trump administration of an “extraordinary attack” on Congress in preventing the disclosure of the president’s personal financial records. source

It’s presence. Not appearance.

I don’t have a problem with her physical appearance.

I have a huge problem with her presence anywhere near the WH, levers of power, the G-20 and everywhere else she and her fellow spawn go because they are wholly unqualified to be near government power but for being the children of a reactionary know nothing bigot.

She should not have been present at the G-20. There was no reason to be there. She provided zero experience, knowledge, or judgment to be there. It’s not even her supposed area of “expertise”. Everyone else looks on her with disdain, because they know she didn’t belong. Trump is the only one who thinks she’s qualified to be there, despite zero evidence of success outside the family grift.

im gonna say this and i hope we don’t fall down a rabbit hole here

if trumps daughter looked different, say like SHS you think she’d be front and center in this admin? she was fine as spokespuppet - it’s a different kind of job. and he likely owed mike something

Russian submarine accident in Russian territorial waters. Multiple casualties reported. The type of sub is in question, and Putin is getting directly involved, particularly because of how poorly the Russians dealt with the Kursk disaster.

It is entirely possible that non-DMV residents have planned their vacations around the 4th. It’s summer, bring the kids, see the capitol (sic), see the fireworks on the National Mall. Planned long before the nationalistic fascism fest took root.
