MSNBC won’t air Trump’s July 4th event live

MSNBC will not air the entirety of President Trump’s planned “Salute to America” on July 4, instead opting to carry on with regularly scheduled news programming that may include clips of the event.

Re: The citizenship question. Trump did what he always does: make some absurd or criminal statement and then back down when it turns out that it is indeed illegal and the rest of the government won’t support him on it. That’s why I don’t share all these fears that he’s going to stay in the WH if he loses in 2020.

They don’t need an excuse. Look at how Black men are regularly shot down and the assailant can just claim, “I felt scared” and get away with it. See George Zimmerman.

From the previous thread:

re: #189 FormerDirtDart 🍕🐀

Caucuses are undemocratic.
You vote is negated if no winner is determined in the first vote, and you don’t have available time to stay for the next vote.
The time needed to conduct them is onerous to people that have other obligations.

That depends on how your state runs caucuses.

In my state, the Democratic Party mails absentee ballots for the caucus if you cannot attend. You may also fill out an absentee ballot at the caucus if you cannot stay. (Those ballots are counted in every round of voting.)

That said, the Nebraska Democratic Party abandoned the caucus process for future elections; this time we will have a primary.

For Democratic voters that only means everyone will get a primary ballot in the mail instead of a caucus ballot.

re: #53 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

If the Blue Angels won’t fly it, you know it’s bad. Those dudes are Navy pilots with the biggest balls in the land.

Blue Angels have very specific flight profiles and if the conditions aren’t right, they don’t fly for public safety reasons.

To be able to perform, the Blue Angels must have at least three nautical miles of visibility horizontally from centerpoint, and a minimum cloud ceiling of 1,500 feet, which the FAA can waive to 1,000 feet. At these minimums, the Blue Angels can perform a limited number of maneuvers in what is called a “flat” show. When the ceiling is at least 4,500 feet and visibility at least three nautical miles, a “low” show can be performed, which includes some rolling maneuvers. With a minimum ceiling of 8,000 feet and visibility of three nautical miles, the Blue Angels can perform their “high” show, which includes all the maneuvers.

They were previously scheduled to fly in Kansas City July 6-7.

I think an underrated amount of this is due to Party Purity, and it’s one of the most frightening aspects of Trumpism. Yes, the GOP is comprised of the open and closeted racists and generally execrable people. But the extent to which the rank and vile GOP have given over independent judgement to Trump and Trumpism is amazing, and not in a good way.

I think a lot of it is hating on The Other, but another big part is Trump Can’t Be Wrong, and Owning The Libs. If Trump likes it, and anyone criticizes it, then they MUST back Trump. Christ, they chucked Jeff Flake and What’s-His-Name out of office simply for being mildly critical of Trump while still voting with him at every turn!

Sultan Memhet—first of the big new bridges.

I was thinking this one

The fourth bridge

The fourth Galata Bridge was built in 1912 by the German firm Hüttenwerk Oberhausen AG for 350,000 gold liras. This floating bridge was 466 m (1,529 ft) long and 25 m (82 ft) wide. It is the bridge, still familiar to many people today, that was badly damaged in a fire in 1992 and towed up the Golden Horn to make way for the current bridge.

I walked across it in 1979.

The Fourth of July celebration exposes Trump to the sort of crowd from which he has been traditionally insulated. The event is held in Washington, which (along with its surrounding suburbs) is heavily Democratic. It is also drawing protesters who will fly the famous Baby Trump blimp. Trump is also alienating nonpolitical attendees who might resent him turning a hallowed ritual that is a traditional venue for unity and a respite from politics into another divisive spectacle.

Trump’s efforts to control the rally should be seen in the context of his fear that the crowd will boo him. He is advertising the event on his Twitter feed, cordoning off the immediate area around his speech for ticket holders, and giving tickets away to Republican donors…

Trump has spent his presidency representing his supporters, without even bothering with the pretense of representing the majority that voted against him. He is attempting to conscript patriotic rituals into this effort. He deserves the reception he fears: loud, merciless boos.

But he can’t stay inside like every other president has done.

Yeah—had to look it up. I think I crossed it once, before the Sultan M opened.

I had to go down 5 rabbit holes to find what I walked across. It was worth it, even though rabbit holes don’t do very well crossing the Bosporus.

The Galata Bridge was a symbolic link between the traditional city of Istanbul proper, site of the imperial palace and principal religious and secular institutions of the empire, and the districts of Galata, Beyoğlu, Şişli and Harbiye, where a large proportion of the inhabitants were non-Muslims and where foreign merchants and diplomats lived and worked. As Peyami Safa wrote in his novel, Fatih-Harbiye, a person who went from Fatih to Harbiye via the bridge set foot in a different civilization and a different culture. Apart from its place in fiction, the romantic appearance of the Galata Bridge made it the subject of many paintings and engravings.

I wasn’t the only one who had a memorable time walking across.

Sadly, no. The next part of the journey I remember was the TUNNEL, which was an above-ground tube with some kind of train in it, with two stops; where you get in and where you get out. (There was a steep climb to the high part of town.) We made several jokes about ‘missing your stop.’ I’ll bet it’s been replaced, too.

Just going to share this story of a 19 YO Utah man who is accused of “sextortion” of 50 (yes *50*) young women.

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah (ABC4 News) - A South Jordan man has been arrested after police said he threatened dozens of teen girls into sending him nude photos of themselves.

According to charging documents, Gabe Ryan Gilbert, 19, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on nine felony charges after a $500,000 arrest warrant was issued on Monday.

*snip*

One of the teens reported she was using Snapchat to talk to “Ethan Parker” after he friended her on the app. He started to make comments to her such as “Tbh I’m horny asf would you be willing to help me out?” The girl told him no and in response, “Ethan” said, “Help or I will expose you. You have 1 minute to send a bra pic”. The girl again told him no. “Ethan” then told her to send a “nude boobs pic” and told her she had “1 minute”. When the girl asked how he would “expose” her he responded with “I will Photoshop your face onto nudes and send them out”, documents stated.

It gets worse. Once the police went to track down Gilbert, they found out he was on a Mormon mission in Mexico. Then the following ensued:

Gilbert’s mission president was contacted and during an interview with him, they made the decision to send him home but his mother told detectives she had spoken with an attorney and she would not tell him any more information or where they can find him.

Even after telling the mother she could not “conceal” him from authorities, she continued to refuse to help identify where they could find him or allow them to speak to him.

Agents showed up at Gilbert’s home to try and located him but his mother answered the door and said she wouldn’t speak to them without a lawyer.

The detective told her he was not there to talk to her, but to talk to Gilbert. She then repeated she was “remaining silent” and she had consulted with an attorney in Las Vegas. The mother continued to refuse to connect investigators with her son.

Charges against Gilbert were filed in 3rd District Court on Monday and a $500,000 warrant for his arrest was issued.

MOM SHOULD HAVE BEEN ARRESTED TOO, IMHO. /sorry not sorry for shouting and all caps.

Trump has just made that more obvious than it used to be.

It was kind of obvious to me during the Reagan administration, when he weighed in on the idea that it was a national shame that lower-ranked enlisted personnel were eligible for food stamps.

The GOP then made it unlawful for enlisted personnel to receive food stamps. Problem solved.

That was overturned later, but the problem remains today.

As for veterans, about 1.8 million veterans are on food stamps, thanks to the party which claims to support the troops.

There is also a problem in the calculation of military pay for food stamps: Basic Allowance for Quarters (used for housing, not food) is figured into any military member who applies for food stamps.

Food insecurity experts note that this fixed payment is the same whether you are stationed in a low-cost area versus high cost.

A single Republican congressman, Rep. Mike Conoway, refused to grant a waiver for the House Armed Services Committee to consider the legislation, where it then died in the Republican-controlled Agriculture Committee.

Military commissaries take in about $80 million a year in food stamps.

But what about already-kinda-gone Howard Schultz, you ask? Ah, but you have to actually run before your campaign can expire, and Schultz never formally took the step beyond “exploring,” so there. Dickendongler, on t’other hand, appears to have blowed up on the launch pad before he ever got any traction, and now all his sweet green icing’s flowing down, to coin a phrase.

According to “a source familiar with the situation,” Dirkendiegler’s senior staff “urged him last month” (!!!) to gracefully bow out and either run for the US Senate or do something useful with his time, says Politico. The whole effort got beat up on with the ugly stick, it seems:

The source said that the campaign only has about 13,000 donors, making it almost impossible to qualify for the next round of presidential debates in the fall. The campaign also only raised just over $1 million in the second quarter — about what he raised in the first 48 hours of his candidacy — and will likely run out of money completely in about a month.

At least five staffers have left or are leaving Hickenlooper’s struggling operation, including his campaign manager, communications director, digital director and finance director. Hickenlooper named a new campaign manager on Monday night.

Brexit ‘has cast a pall over language learning’

[…]

Author Teresa Tinsley said “by and large” there was a geographical mirroring across the country of areas that voted for Brexit and areas where schools have a lower take-up of modern foreign languages (MFL).

In this year’s report she says language learning is also becoming “increasingly segregated along both socio-economic and academic lines”.

[…]

One school leader said: “Some students see no use to languages (particularly pupil premium students) as they have never been abroad and probably never will. Since the Brexit vote, there has also been a shift in attitudes.

[…]

Geoff Barton, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said schools were struggling with a severe shortage of language teachers and Brexit could worsen this situation because many language teachers come from EU countries.

He said: “We are in danger of becoming a monolinguistic country unless we do something to rejuvenate the love and learning of languages.”

That of course is the Brexiteers’ goal: to make the entire UK into a backwards ethno-nationalist state.

Why we should be worried that Nigel Farage is going to towns

[…]

Farage paints in broad colours and plays on grievances, many of which are justified, and prejudices, which rarely are.

Some of Farage’s policies are morally unpleasant, such as scrapping the UK’s international aid contributions, but others reflect the failure of the other parties to craft a message and policies that appeal to all parts of the UK.

[…]

This is a key component of the populist culture war and reflects the growing divide in almost every mature democracy between the metropolitan areas and towns and rural communities.

Writers burdened without outdated language struggle to convey reality:

A Lab-Made Human ‘Embryo’ Has Revealed a Truly Magical Step in Human Development

The fixation on “magic” is the basis of the idea that life is a “miracle”.

If you think I’m being too pedantic, let’s look at the first sentence:

Several weeks after conception, your body underwent a big step in development - you grew a top end and a bottom end. But how exactly our cells figure this out has been a pretty big mystery.

The idea that “your body” is somehow different than “you” is deeply rooted in the idea that you are a “soul” that somehow was put into a body. Many religions cling to this belief.

And the problem is… note how the headline made this about “human” development, i.e. “you grew a top end and a bottom end. “.

But that is true of all vertebrates. You and your cat and the racoon outside are all the same in this basic development.

Now the research in question is really about human specific models of development and how different animals thus have these small changes in their development, but that one finds only deep into the story.

Something for your Twitter sparring partner to consider.

Genocide (goes to the United Nations, treaty and definitions):

Article II

In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

Killing members of the group;
Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

It’s just a reboot of Kill the Indian, Save the Man. Children were removed from families and sent to religious “schools” where the culture was beaten and starved out of them.

Pretty much. The difference between XIX Century residential schools in Canada and the USA was then that was not recognised as a crime against humanity.

Now it is (which is why Canada is going through a truth and reconciliation process now).

When we went to Yukon, we also noticed the attention the disappearance of First Nations women are now getting, now that Stephen Harper’s Progressive-Conservative Party is out of power. Disappearance rates are far above the average for Canada.

The Genocide Treaty (and it’s enabling act in the USA) requires any treaty nation to prosecute crimes which it becomes aware of. I imagine when all this is done, a good number of Trump maladministration employees are going to be on lists in other countries.

The biggest issue I have with President Obama was right after he took office, and chose to “look forward rather than backward” over alleged war crimes of the previous administration under Geo. W. Bush.

War crimes cannot be swept under a rug. The issue was how the “optics” would look about prosecuting a previous administration, looking like a political purge.

Iraq had done us no harm. We invaded a sovereign state on trumped-up evidence later shown to be false. That cost hundreds of thousands of lives in Iraq and thousands in the USA. That should have been prosecuted. I consider that Obama’s greatest failure, not standing up for the rule of law when it mattered most: It emboldened conservatives to ignore the law further.

If you read the Mayors full statement it’s pretty good.

I can’t find the mayor’s statement. I can only hear the pull quotes in the article where she says “we currently do not restrict religious freedom” (that’s really comforting, we’re not restricting religious freedom now, and atheism is not a religion, except when it’s convenient to Christians for it to be one), “I do not like the messaging” (atheists are outside the norms of society and have messaging which upsets a politician who should represent the whole city, not just Christians).

When you’re on my side of the fence, you see such statements which seem “pretty good” as statements trying to divide us from “normal” Americans.

Moreover, she had to put out a statement where she specifically said she was unhappy with the message atheists put out.

I’ll just bet she puts out the same over all the Christian church messages put out on billboards and radio and television across the city of Fort Worth. Atheists speak up in advance of a conference in her city, for which those banners were paid into her city coffers, and “lets say how disappointed in their message we are as a city.”

Nope it was not a good message. It was a message to make the majority feel superior over a minority group.

She is a Republican. I would expect exactly that sort of message about a minority group from a conservative.

Not in favor of that, obviously. brass knuckles are not self defense. brass knuckles are what you use when you want to beat a man to death and you don’t want his family to be able to have an open casket. Now, personally, I think states need to allow for sword canes and for longer knives than the law currently allows for. My guess is that lots of potential street fights could be averted if one party pulled a Bowie “knife” out of a scabbard. (An actual Bowie knife is in my mind almost a freaking short sword. We had severe thunderstorms last night and the power went out at about 8:30. Our side of the block ALWAYS loses power but the people across the street all have their lights on. It’s maddening.

I didn’t know what else to do so I took an Ambien and went to sleep. The power came back on at around 4:30 am.

With the weather forecast I heard driving in this morning.

Low to mid 90’s, high humidity all day with a high probability of thunderstorms off-and-on all day. Listen for delay in local fireworks displays.

Note: there are many local areas in the DMV area that have their own fireworks displays. You can often see cloud reflections of the display on the mall during the other events.

could it really go that far?

Of course, Trump may have a fall-back position: If the Supreme Court orders Mnuchin to turn over Trump’s tax returns, Trump may order him to refuse. This would probably trigger the House to impeach Mnuchin. But Trump may order all the senators not up in 2020 and those up but not vulnerable to vote for acquittal, thus saving Mnuchin’s neck. At that point, what could Neal do?

Couple points on this:

1. If gangs are showing up at houses, armed or not, we are in Klan territory and it’s too late for cops. Load up a couple 12-guages and call some friends. And a lawyer.

2. This is the predictable result of punch-a-nazi rules. There is no hard barrier between milkshakes, punches, and a rope over a branch.

Only a million anti-Trump dollars pissed away. Most of the dropouts will have blown more than 20 million. Those donations will not be available when and where they count.

At the beginning of a campaign, it’s never clear which candidate is going to catch on and emerge triumphant. Even a candidate who doesn’t register at the beginning can eventually capture the public fancy; higher polling opponents can drop out for a variety of reasons — health, scandal, family tragedy, or yelling (e.g. Dean). I don’t contribute at the beginning because I usually don’t have a definite favorite and, when I do, the person never lasts long :- ) (e.g John Glenn in 1984 and Wesley Clark in 2004!).

To be blunt - these right wingers say ignore the court order and the rule of law and do precisely the thing in the way that the Court said you shouldn’t.

Had Trump been competent, he would have had a pliant SCT to backstop the question on the census. But he isn’t. Trumpworld blew it, and now his sycophants and protectors are urging him to violate the law again.

The law requires adhering to the APA before you add this question to the census. Trumpworld failed to do that. That’s why they lost this case.

All that the GOP wants to do is see government and the rule of law burn. This is exhibit A.

Oddly enough, he’s not seeing a lot of coverage of Trump’s vanity display in the evening. CSPAN lists an hour block (probably required); Fox News will of course be slavering. But MSNBC is replaying the Dem debates. CNN lists a show on 90’s music. ABC and CBS seem to be following their normal schedules.

In the afternoon 750,000 spectators watched a three and one-half hour parade over a three-mile route. Marching in the parade were 17,000 people, including 11,757 in military service. There were 47 marching units, 52 bands, and 10 drum and bugle corps in the inaugural parade. The highlight of the parade was a mammoth float - 408 feet long and mounted on 164 wheels - which introduced the theme “Liberty and Strength Through Consent of the Governed.”

What motivates the Trumpists is the sadism found in authoritarian personalities. The infliction of suffering and distress on their perceived foes brings them the greatest delight.

Alternatively, there’s also an element of masochism involved; not only to do they take pleasure in submitting to the strongman, they also thrill in being persecuted - indeed, being persecuted (or more appropriately, feeling that they’re being persecuted) brings them the most sublime satisfaction imaginable.

They thrive on bullying others, especially when they feel those “others” deserve to be bullied, and strutting about with a whip and meting out lashings is largely sufficient to keep their deeply-held feelings of inadequacy at bay.

The flip side is that until this law passed, the cops here in Texas could arrest you (meaning black people) for having a long stick that they could decide was a martial arts weapon. If you practiced martial arts, you had to make sure your equipment was out of reach in your car or you could be arrested. So, really, the title should read “you can no longer get in trouble for things that aren’t as lethal as a gun.”

But they can still kill you at will for being black in a “threatening” way.

Yeah, the persecution complex is really at the heart of all of this evil.

In conversations with my relatives in the midwest, what comes out more than anything else is this anger at feeling “picked on” - an anger that comes from their immersion in the Fox/Hate radio toxic stew.

If every day, you were told that billionaires were hoarding all the money, yukking it up, and pissing in your face, after a while, you’d be pretty mad at them. In this case, it would be true.

But the puppeteers of Fox/Hate radio have successfully turned blacks/Latinos/gays/women/college professors into the all-powerful bogeyman, and the yokels have swallowed this entirely, because all these groups are “other” and all make them feel threatened and stupid.

That dichotomy also comes up when they try to pivot the conversation to their faux-compassion for fetuses. That pivot is currently unvailable to them because many of the immigrants being held are children, or are pregnant women.

This frustrates them because they can no longer claim moral high ground.

That is a standard issue motion activated trail camera. Takes stills or videos and saves to SD cards. We bring the cards in every few days and look through them for interesting captures. Here’s one from this morning:

Not sure I’m a fan of that shirt. Way too easy to mistake it for being a pro-conservative thing because it’ll take the rest of my life plus 40 years to see a stars-and-stripes tea setup and not think “TEA Party”.

re: #454 Khal Wimpo (the extinguisher of tiki torches)

There is a crime story about bank robbers who plan a number of well timed “accidents” to gridlock an entire city while the thieves flee on bicycles.

you beat me to it.

If I recall, the new HQs was to be across the street from his DC hotel

Updinged you, but you’re juuuust off. The current HQ is.

And the site was to be auctioned to developers who wanted it to be zoned for a new hotel. The decision was made in order to keep the Trump hotel’s monopoly on downtown travellers.

I read that it was a trip to Stromboli that inspired Tolkien’s vision of Mount Doom, permanently erupting, and that the neighboring islet of Strombolicchio, with its twisted volcanic outcroppings and a winding staircase up to a lighthouse, inspired The Dark Tower.

They posit an escape to Argentina.

The crazy thing about this is that there’s pretty much no way in which Angela Merkel’s Presidency in any way resembles the Nazi Reich, and they don’t even attempt to draw any comparisons. It’s basically “Hitler = Bad. Merkel = Bad. Therefore Merkel = Hitler”

That’s sort of the key move in the first (and vastly superior) version of “The Italian Job”. Case gridlock in a city while an armored car robbery is carried out and then use small and maneuverable Mini Coopers to escape with the loot. (A lot more to the movie of course.)

Children gulags, media is “the enemy of the people,” military parades, forced prison labor. Sounds like the Soviet Union or North Korea.

Leasing workers is part of the plan. A twofer for the private prison industry. Money for holding them, money for leasing them out as slaves workers.
