June 26, 2019 | Josh Rogosin — One of my favorite things about Tiny Desk concerts is that artists are often inspired to experiment. Betty Who was in town recently for a three-night residency at D.C.’s famed 9:30 Club where her sound was larger than life. The subwoofers cranked out backing tracks you could feel in your gut and dancers flanked the pop star, punctuating every pulsating beat. But she began her Tiny Desk performance with only her cello and her voice — the first time she’s ever accompanied one of her original songs with the instrument. She grew up in Sydney, Australia, and started playing at the age of four (just like Yo-Yo Ma). Maybe it had something to do with her mom being in the room, but emotions ran high for the charismatic and chatty singer. “I didn’t want to be the girl who played cello and sang,” she told the crowd gathered to watch. “‘Cause that girl feels really far away from ass-out, sparkle-covered pop-star me.”

Betty Who’s third LP, Betty, falls squarely in the Roséwave, sun’s-out, buns-out pop genre. When all the studio production is stripped away, what’s left are intricate melodies that soar through Betty’s impressive vocal range and relatable lyrics. As the audio engineer for the Tiny Desk concert series, I’m always curious how the vocals will translate without the aid of pitch correction and tons of effects you hear on the album. I’m a sucker for great melody and Betty Who’s raw vocal performance at her Tiny Desk had me in a state of aural ecstasy.

Adding to the jazzy vibe of the intimate performance are Betty’s touring musicians, Myla Bocage on keys and Ian Barnett on the drum pad. Jemila Dunham is in full-on beast-mode on bass.

Betty Who says she dreamed of having a Tiny Desk concert ever since she was a teenager. She chose to end hers by asking everyone to sing along to the track, “I Remember.” The melody worms its way into my ear, whisking me off to summer in my mind’s eye. Poolside. Glass of rosé in hand. Later, I’m jumping up and down at the club in perfect sync with new-found friends. Everyone’s screaming along to the words as I realize I’m not sun-kissed, I’m sunburned. Never mind, it’s time to sing:

Dancing under the stars

Kissing you in the dark

I remember your love, oh

Never giving you up, giving you up, oh

Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot — none were struck down by lightning though they committed greater evil than our fuhrer has accomplished to date. I would suggest that means that any G-d that may exist may actually not be involved in human affairs; that we are left to solve our problems ourselves

My family took road trips to the midwest twice a year for years - once during Christmas and once in the summer - to visit our relatives in the midwest. My father had a subscription to MAD and he would save the issues and deploy them on me during these road trips. I spent many hours in the back seat of my family’s car reading that rag, and cracking the fuck up. I remember one time when we were getting gas in Murdo or North Platte, I can’t remember, and the latest issue of MAD was in the newsstand. My father bought it and gave it to me. It was the OJ issue. I lost that thing, wish I still had it.

On my family’s road trips, we played word games.

This was in the days before seat belt laws; we’d pack the back of the station wagon in such a way as to have a space suitable for the winning child to lie down until the next winner was declared.

Not a good night to get TWO flat tires. Stupid pothole I missed that was between the left turn lane and forward lane. BAM. BAM. I thought, ouch, poor baby, you’ll be ok, and kept on turning through the arrow. Then my TPMS started screaming at me. Dammit. At least there was a not-busy parking lot right there, so I pulled in and backed up into a space (always try to do this if you need a tow). As soon as I got out of the car, I could hear the two right tires hissing at me in disapproval. Ugh. Sidewall damage on both. RIP.

Tesla roadside assistance, here I come. They were pretty great actually. The guy tried to find loaner 20” wheels (Yeah, stupid me had to get the performance version of the Model 3), and could only track one down. So the only other option was a tow truck. The tow came in about 45 minutes. Eh. Whatever. It is what it is. The guy knew exactly what to do, and he was great. Got me up on the flatbed in no time. Ended up getting towed home so I could replace the two flats with two of the winter wheels/tires I have. Thank goodness for that.

I guess I’ll find out tomorrow how the car will react to having two different size wheels on it. lol

Of course, it being me, this had to happen on a holiday. I haven’t had a flat in more than 10 years. Go big or go home I guess! Have to get by until next Wednesday for two new tires. Discount Tire thankfully makes things easy online.

Cost of the tow? $0. But I tipped the driver $20. It’s all I had on me. At first he refused, but I insisted. Tires on the other hand. Anyone have a spare arm and leg? I got the road hazard this time.

I need a drink. :)

It’s sad that, at age 35, I’m already having “Kids these days” moments. Case in point, seeing a 20-something complain about the cost of bottled water from a hotel market. It’s not that he’s complaining about the cost, which would be dumb by itself to anyone who’s ever stayed in a hotel/flown on a plane/gone to a tourist trap/etc. It’s not that he balked when I told him there was a 7-11 just 15 minutes walk down the street. It’s that he’s staying at a hotel which not only includes full kitchen set-ups in their basic rooms, but also comes with glassware which means he could just do as millions of Americans did for decades and drink a glass of water from the tap.

And I see this on almost a daily basis, people come in and buy overpriced bottles of water while bitching to me about how “expensive” ($3/bottle) they are. Which only makes it more hilarious when so many of these same drama queens will drink water from the big water jug put next to the coffee station…which comes from the damned tap.

Here in Czech Republic, a 2 liter bottle of store-brand soda water is 22 cents. Yep…..$0.22.

Then again, it’s been widely noted that drinking tap water here probably isn’t a good idea - there’s lots of contamination in the water supply, the result of decades of heavy industry.

So I’m seeing that the U.S. Treasury yield curve is inverted, and has been inverted for the last quarter. That’s usually considered a reliable warning klaxon that a recession is on the way.

If you believe the signals coming out of the bond market, it might be time to start counting down until our next recession.

As of this week, the U.S. Treasury yield curve has now been inverted for a full quarter—an incredibly dull-sounding turn of events that happens to be an unusually reliable warning sign that an economic downturn is on the way. The yield curve has flipped prior to each of the last seven official recessions over the past 50 years, without a single false-alarm during that stretch. If securities could talk, in other words, they’d be screaming bloody murder about trouble ahead.

When finance types say that the yield curve is “inverted,” what they really mean is that the typical order of the debt markets that prevails when the economy is healthy has been turned on its head. Usually, long-term U.S. government bonds offer higher yields than short-term ones, because buyers demand higher interest rates in return for locking up their money for greater periods of time. There are a few reasons why this is the case, but a big one is that the longer it takes to get repaid, the more risk there is that inflation will eat up your investment.

LOL:

My favorite editorial of the week is in today’s New York Times and written by Michelle Goldberg.

Say this for Donald Trump. He may be transforming American politics into a kleptocratic fascist reality show and turning our once-great country into a global laughingstock, but at least he’s humiliating John Bolton in the process.

The bully finally gets to learn what being the victim feels like. That’s Schadenfreudealicious.

It is particularity enjoyable that Tucker Carlson (Trump’s new shoe shiner) referred to Bolton as a “bureaucratic tapeworm.” I am certain that Bolton thinks Carlson is an intellectual lightweight - Hell, Dirt Janochek thinks Tucker Carlson is a mental lightweight and Dirt still points at the words when he reads something. So, being replaced in North Korea by boy child Carlson - that’s gotta sting.

And then Trump keeps calling him Mike. I guess that’s because John is so hard to spell what with that silent h.

I admit it. I’m enjoying it. I just wish they’d let me throw a pie in his face before he inevitably goes to jail for Trump.

North Korea has accused the US of being “hell-bent on hostile acts”, despite a recent agreement between the two countries to resume nuclear talks.

We live in a country where a long record of public service is a distinct disadvantage.

People were fed up with politicians and politics as usual and DT was able to sell himself successfully as the anti-politician with no record of public service (an only a patchy and largely one-sided record of his private undertakings)

The only public service that seems to matter to a large portion of the electorate is military service. That’s a bad trend.

There is nothing wrong with military service (says the veteran), but as the “only” metric that is dangerous.

The firehose of bulkshyte that comes out of the administration, it’s hard to keep up. It’s not your memory.

From the NPR article I linked in #101:

“I want to make it crystal clear that this step is not a retreat from human rights commitments,” Haley told the media. “On the contrary, we take this step because our commitment does not allow us to remain a part of a hypocritical and self-serving organization that makes a mockery of human rights.”

The move comes as little surprise from an administration that frequently has lambasted the 47-member body for a gamut of perceived failures — particularly the dubious rights records of many of its member countries, as well as what Haley has repeatedly called the council’s “chronic bias against Israel.”

Russia’s state TV panel laughs at the excitement of @FoxNews anchors gushing about Trump’s parade: “Two tanks is all they’ve got! Their paint is peeling, their uniforms are wrinkled! Trump should have asked our Defense Ministry to teach them how to organize military parades.”

Russia’s military would never flip off their C-in-C like that…

But again, parades with tanks and weaponry are not as big a part of the American tradition.

So, the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld now has a newly discovered species of jumping spider named in his honor.

A Queensland Museum arachnologist has helped identify five new species of tiny brushed jumping spiders the size of a grain of rice.

The group includes a spider named after Karl Lagerfeld. Arachnologist Danilo Harms, said the spider had a distinct look that was reminiscent of the late fashion designer.

Jotus karllagerfeldi is a black and white spider which we looked at and instantly thought of Karl Lagerfeld and his signature look, as the spider has large black eyes, which reminded us of sunglasses and its black and white front legs were reminiscent of Lagerfeld’s kent collar,” he said.

Yes, we carve up our electoral votes.

If a Democratic candidate took NE2 (Omaha) as Obama did in 2008 (before the GOP gerrymandered a bunch of my rural district into it), that would be great. If they also took Lincoln (NE1), that would give the Democrats four out of five of our electoral votes.

They’re predicting rainfall in any one thunderstorm from two to five inches due to slow movement. Yay floods.

The last infrastructure project I pushed on the village board was buying proper road gravel for our dirt streets and paying a construction company to run a proper road grader to spread it out over town. (The village would always buy crushed cement, which is crap for roads.)

Road gravel is many times more expensive than crushed cement, but actually works to keep your streets from washing out.

Despite all the rain, our streets have held up.

They used to be a constant headache in board meetings with people complaining about how awful the streets were.

Eight truckloads of road gravel were necessary for all our streets.

I’m not a fan of dividing electoral votes by district. As happens in so many GOP run states, thanks to gerrymandering, the Democratic candidate could win a majority of votes but get only 30-40% of electoral votes. This process can transform each state into a mini-representative of the electoral college.

In the Burning of Washington, the battle which immediately preceded it was considered one of the worst defeats in the American military’s history.

Battle of Bladensburg (goes to Wikipedia)

President Madison put a general in charge via patronage for the defence of DC. That guy pretty much threw away every tactical advantage he had in the battle against the British.

The US troops consisted primarily of DC and Maryland state militias, which were poorly equipped and armed, along with 420 Marines, Navy, and Army.

The USA outnumbered the British about 3 to two, and in artillery 18 pieces to 3 pieces.

By fleeing Bladensburg, that left the path open to Washington.

It is noteworthy in the Battle of Bladensburg that African-American troops which were part of the American defence were the only ones not to run away.

That was specifically noted to President Madison.

Just before the battle Commodore Barney, on being asked by President James Madison “…if his negroes would not run on the approach of the British?” replied: “No Sir…they don’t know how to run; they will die by their guns first.” The Commodore was correct, the men did not run; one such man was young sailor Harry Jones (no.35), apparently a free black. Jones was wounded in the final action at Bladensburg, and remained a patient at the Naval Hospital Washington DC for nearly two months

Great! Has it altered your enjoyment of food?

I just stopped eating so much frozen pizzas and started cooking more of my own things.

I was eating waaaay too many frozen convenience foods and I have little doubt that was getting me fat. I did eliminate milk from my diet (a rather mild lactose intolerance, though cheese presents no problems) and I’m drinking almond milk now (well, of course, here in Europe it has to be called “almond drink”, LOL). I can get it fairly inexpensively from Lidl - it’s a store brand from their bio/organic/gluten-free range of products, which is expanding as younger Czechs in particular are seeking more healthy lifestyles.

I’m down 40 lbs from the start of the year and am hoping to lose another 30 by the end of it. Besides beginning to slide into pre-diabetes I got misdiagnosed with a heart condition that I never had. I do have essential hypertension but a substitute cardiologist apparently misread an old echo report instead of actually going by any of the old or new imaging and slapped “severe concentric left ventricular hypertrophy” on my file. Rare case where a misdiagnosis led to a good outcome because it gave me the motivation I needed. Anyway I aced the treadmill stress test two days ago, my regular cardiologist cleared me for strenuous exercise and apologized for the fuckup.

I have a host of baby birds chirping loudly for food in my attic.

That’s never happened before: I presume part of my house was damaged from the two tornadoes last year which allowed birds this Spring access to my attic to build nests. Apparently when the roof of my house was replaced the roofers didn’t see it.

I won’t bother them, but in Autumn I think I will have the upper part of my house inspected to ensure there is no hole or other access to my attic.

The VFW collected three thousand or so people’s signatures thanking us for our service on Independence Day.

heroes.vfw.org

I appreciate the gesture I suppose, but Independence Day is for America, Americans (all of us), and the ideals the nation is supposed to stand for in the world, even though we often fall short of the lofty goal we’ve set for ourselves.

I’m not a “hero” even if the VFW puts it that way. I was in harm’s way when the world’s situation warranted it, but so many people who have never been near a military base have also been heroic, whether they are doctors, teachers, farmers, police officers, mechanics, &c.

“Hero” does not equal “veteran.”

These memes aren’t designed to make you care about homeless veterans. No, they’re designed to shame you for caring about asylum-seeking families.

So, you know, since they won’t let people into the concentration camps to help the people inside, and they won’t accept donations, it’s not like comforting animals in shelters - where they WILL let you in, and which WILL accept donations - is taking anything away from the children and families in detention.

Those sorts of statements and memes are almost always from conservatives.

The homeless vet meme in particular I frequently heard as a homeless vet.

They don’t actually want to do anything about homeless vets, they just want to deflect from whatever it is they think liberals want to “waste” money on.

Conservatives have also been bashing foreign aid for decades, claiming “we have homeless vets.” Foreign aid is a tiny percentage of the budget.

All it is, is deflection to change the topic because they do not have valid arguments and so the only tool they have is deflection.

If they actually cared about veteran homelessness in the wealthiest country in the history of civilisation, they could solve it tomorrow with a tax-payer funded home for every homeless vet.

When I was homeless, I was spit on and had things thrown at me.

No conservative ever said to me “it’s a national dishonour you’re homeless; let me call my rep and demand my taxes be used to help you and your comrades-in-arms.”

Conservatives are consummate liars, because lying is how they hold up their conservative religion.

There’s a lot of effort on the Right directed at excusing doing nothing about problems that afflict various people in society, whether it’s victim blaming - “They CHOOSE to be homeless so they can do drugs!” - or redirection shaming - “No money for Illegals while there homeless veterans!” - or ridiculing people who DO care - “virtue signalling”.

The only quake I ever experienced was in Ponca City, Oklahoma. (That was before the fracking boom in Oklahoma.)

It turns out there is a poorly-understood fault which runs through the state. In that quake, a number of buildings downtown were damaged; my 1914 Royal office typewriter went dancing across my desk, and several items in our house were thrown from shelves or jumbled in cabinets.

There’s been a kerfuffle over one of the “suppliers” to the Bible Museum, a papyrologist named Dirk Obbink. This came out about 10 days ago

thedailybeast.com

The early manuscript community has been in an uproar since. One thing I read in reddit r/AcademicBiblical is a suggestion by scholar Roberta Mazza that the interest in cartonnages (mummy masks) by some Evangelicals is a possibility that deconstructing a mummy mask could be used as a way to “wash”* papyrus. Because cartonnages were made out of old papyrus. *However*, the making of cartonnages apparently stopped a couple of decades before Jesus was born, so this would be kind of difficult. But it’s something to be aware of.

I probably should do a page with the latest discussions.

* The mask is placed in a water solution to separate the papyrus pieces. The “washing” here would be like money laundering.

“Lori Loughlin is living in a dream world,” said Larry Levine, of Wall Street Prison Consultants, told The Mercury News. “She doesn’t have a grasp on the reality about how these federal prosecutions work.”

Levine, an ex-con who made a business out of coaching clients on how to navigate prison life, reportedly represents three people out of Southern California. Two pleaded guilty, while a third is still working out a deal with prosecutors — which may involve ongoing cooperation. He said Loughlin had a “grand opportunity” to accept a plea deal. He also argued that her apparent unwillingness will play a role at sentencing.

Ukrainian intelligence services seized one of the possible suspects in the case of shooting down a Malaysian boeing from MH17, a former air defense commander of the city of Snihna, which they had transported to Kiev during the insurgency operation. The BBC’s Ukrainian newsroom said on its website today. It was at the city of Snižne that in July 2014 civilian boeing was shot down. All 298 people on board were killed.
