A Classic Message: Tom Waits, “Hold On” [VIDEO]

Music • Views: 26,649

YouTube

I’ve posted this one before, but we can always stand to hear this message again.

They hung a sign up in our town
“if you live it up, you won’t
live it down”
So, she left Monte Rio, son
Just like a bullet leaves a gun
With charcoal eyes and Monroe hips
She went and took that California trip
Well, the moon was gold, her
Hair like wind
She said don’t look back just
Come on Jim

Oh you got to
Hold on, Hold on
You got to hold on
Take my hand, I’m standing right here
You gotta hold on

Well, he gave her a dimestore watch
And a ring made from a spoon
Everyone is looking for someone to blame
But you share my bed, you share my name
Well, go ahead and call the cops
You don’t meet nice girls in coffee shops
She said baby, I still love you
Sometimes there’s nothin left to do

Oh you got to
Hold on, hold on
You got to hold on
Take my hand, I’m standing right here, you got to
Just hold on.

Well, God bless your crooked little heart St. Louis got the best of me
I miss your broken-china voice
How I wish you were still here with me

Well, you build it up, you wreck it down
You burn your mansion to the ground
When there’s nothing left to keep you here, when
You’re falling behind in this
Big blue world

Oh you go to
Hold on, hold on
You got to hold on
Take my hand, I’m standing right here
You got to hold on

Down by the Riverside motel,
It’s 10 below and falling
By a 99 cent store she closed her eyes
And started swaying
But it’s so hard to dance that way
When it’s cold and there’s no music
Well your old hometown is so far away
But, inside your head there’s a record
That’s playing, a song called

Hold on, hold on
You really got to hold on
Take my hand, I’m standing right here
And just hold on

So bears in Colorado can’t get into a locked car? California bears just peel back the window/frame. Of course they have easier egress when they do that, so presumably they have less incentive to drive off.

Recreational marijuana legalization tied to decline in teens using pot, study says

Marijuana use among young people in the United States overall has climbed in recent years, but a new paper suggests that in states where recreational marijuana has been legalized, marijuana use among youth may actually be falling.

Laws that legalized recreational marijuana were associated with an 8% drop in the number of high schoolers who said they used marijuana in the last 30 days, and a 9% drop in the number who said they’d used at least 10 times in the last 30 days, according to the paper published in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics on Monday.

Speaking of transgressive—when I lived in Utah, one way to be transgressive, either as an adult or teen, was to go and buy a coffee or tea at a coffee shop. Quelle scandale! It’s somewhat the case here in Mesa as well. We have as many standalone soda shops as there are standalone coffee shops in my neighborhood.

There are far more Christians in the US, and Evangelicals make a point of being loud. Of course they are targeted.

And they’re busy grifting from their church followers.

Better Start Swimming or You’ll Sink Like a Stone (goes to Slacktavist, with maps of the SE Florida coast’s churches and expected sea level inundation of the coastline).

Slacktavist notes the huge number of Evangelical, Pentecostal, and other such churches on the Florida coastline, which sea level rise will inundate. That would include their schools, their parishioners’ home, everything.

Steve Strang is the owner of Charisma magazine. He’s made millions of dollars pitching that magazine and its religious articles precisely to Charismatics.

Strang lives and works in Orlando. He recently went on Keven Copeland’s show to rail against climate change, arguing its really a Democratic plot to justify turning everything into socialism and force government control on everything. (I can say that he’s lying about all that.)

Strang is also now an elderly man but probably has a couple decades left to grift from gullible religious people in the name of religion. He won’t have to deal with the effects of Florida’s coastline being inundated, because he’ll be dead.

Boulder County, Colo. gives the exact opposite advice to the police in Churchill, Manitoba.

When we were in Churchill, we were informed right away that every person in town keeps their car unlocked. If a polar bear wanders through the area, that gives people the opportunity to jump into a car and lock it so the bear can’t get them.

‘Pro-Lifers’ Don’t Think Veterans Deserve In Vitro Treatments, Because ‘Pro-Life’ (Wonkette, more at the link):

If there is anything the Right loves to talk about, it is how much they love fetuses and also the troops. They just can’t get enough of them, they say, which perhaps explains why they keep dragging us all into unnecessary wars and opposing sex education in schools.

Thus, it may surprise you to learn that congressional Democrats are having a hell of a time trying to make permanent a federal program meant to cover the costs of in vitro fertilization for veterans whose injuries in combat have rendered them infertile. And yet they are! Why? Because many forced birth enthusiasts oppose IVF treatment, on account of the fact that (unless someone wants to go full Octomom) it requires the destruction of fertilized embryos.

I will give you a moment to try and process the mental gymnastics one would need to do in order to be more concerned about the destruction of embryos than they are about war, which so often results in the destruction of non-embryonic people.

Shock poll predicts Brexit Party will win in Grimsby and Cleethorpes at next election

Conservatives and Labour could be in trouble in North East Lincolnshire, with one pollster predicting that both Grimsby and Cleethorpes will be won by the Brexit Party at the next election.

Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party made huge in-roads into UK politics during the European Parliament elections in May, taking 52 per cent of all the votes cast in North East Lincolnshire.

According to a senior pollster, that success is likely to continue at the next general election with victories in Grimsby and Cleethorpes.

Woman who was told her rape was a ‘good thing’ by Southern Baptist leader files lawsuit (Fort Worth Star-Telegram)

The douchecanoe in question is Paige Patterson.

“Void of even the most basic standards of support for victims required by state and federal law, SWBTS had put in place a construct in which sexual harassment and violence were ignored — or at times — even celebrated by its leaders,” the lawsuit says. “Through intimidation and victim-blaming, any young woman who dared speak up was shamed into silence.”

THREAD: The next UK Prime Minister will soon be chosen by around 160,000 members of the Conservative Party - that’s 0.2% of the population. Almost half of the members are now over 65, 71% are male and 97% are white.

Would Chris Coons Want Me to Talk about My Faith If I Were Running for Office? (Pharyngula)

Coons biases are showing nakedly in this essay in which he says Democrats need to talk about their faith, using the example of Sherrod Brown, who got all this attention from the electorate for openly making a big deal of his Christian beliefs. So, he argues, everyone needs to make it part of their stump speech.

What’s implied is that this is a fine strategy for Christians.

I guarantee you that if I were running for office (fortunately, I’m not) Coons would be telling me to hush about the atheism thing. If I were Muslim and running for the presidency, my religion would be a huge issue; that’s a campaign that wouldn’t even get off the ground, all because people like Coons and Brown are making their Christianity a ploy in their run for office.

Yup, just being an atheist worked against me running for reëlection. That’s all it took, the write-in candidate going around asking “do you really want an atheist representing you on the village board?” Poof, I lost the election by two votes.

In the meantime,

And the religious affiliation breakdown didn’t even bother to ask Jews, because they already knew we’d be about 85% yes.

myjewishlearning.com

In late 1938, 125,000 applicants lined up outside US consulates hoping to obtain 27,000 visas under the existing immigration quota. By June 1939, the number of applicants had increased to over 300,000. Most visa applicants were unsuccessful. At the Evian Conference in July 1938, only the Dominican Republic stated that it was prepared to admit significant numbers of refugees, although Bolivia would admit around 30,000 Jewish immigrants between 1938 and 1941.

What a case. A woman retained the attorney in Torrington for her divorce case. Subsequent to that, the state supreme court says they exchanged eleven thousand text messages and images over the next six months.

Her husband complained in March to the state bar that her lawyer entered into a romantic relationship with her while she was still married to her husband and the divorce case was ongoing.

The state Division of Criminal Investigation then raided the lawyer’s office and home, seizing the communications.

Never a dull moment around here.

On Fox & Friends, Kellyanne Conway argues that including a citizenship question in the US census is really no big deal because the census asks even more “intrusive/invasion” questions, such as “how many toilets [are] in your house” and “who’s using them.”

Brilliant brush-off talking point. Border Control agents are not going to come round you up if you do not have enough toilets…

McGrath has an uphill battle to beat McConnell. It’s not impossible, but it’s going to be a tough slog against one of the most awful men to ever hold office in the US Senate.

But if she pulls it off, then the odds of the Senate going to the Democrats - and the Democrats taking the WH, go up immeasurably (and likely signifies yet another blue wave to add to the tsunuami in 2018).

169
Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))  Jul 9, 2019 • 7:43:30am

I always thought that these rights exist by mutual consent: if we wish to exercise them ourselves, we cannot deny them to others.

Which makes it an important bit of strategy to make people feel cowed and unwilling to assert their own rights voluntarily before then seeking to actively take them away from others who might try to defend them.

Fuck these people.

For a while I got those in my E-mail.

It is difficult to report because frequently the sending E-mail address is spoofed.

If your Internet provider has a reporting system, they will normally have someplace on their Website an E-mail address to report abuse. You can also send it to the provider it came from (but you’re left with the problem of a spoofed E-mail).

The E-mail address to report is usually structured as “abuse (at) shittywebhost (dot) com” or “webmaster (at) pricegougers (dot) com”

Even if the E-mail address is spoofed, it is sometimes worth it to report it to the host the E-mail purportedly came from.

We had an invoice scam here in Nebraska which spoofed the E-mail address of the state Emergency Management Agency public information officer. The invoice scam was sent to every public information officer in the state (from a list lifted from state computers).

I reported it to NEMA and the state government, which then advised all public information officers to ignore the E-mails and watch for suspicious activity related to their E-mail accounts (such as on-line banking in cities where they have that).

Also report it to the FBI’s site for reporting E-mail scams at spam@uce.gov as they track that and use it as evidence if they can rope in a scammer for fraud.

There are lots of people that will suddenly discover they have preexisting conditions they didn’t know they had before. And lots of people will be wondering why their recent graduating son’s emergency appendectomy is costing $20K.

I think this is an absolutely disgusting slander. There is nothing in Clinton’s background that suggests he was interested in girls barely into puberty. It’s just nasty, classic guilt by association. As the release states, he was never at any of Epstein’s residences and met the man once in ten years. He had staff that were with him on logged flights, so it isn’t like we’re in danger of finding photos of Clinton in a hot tub with naked 12 year olds.

re: #169 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I always thought that these rights exist by mutual consent: if we wish to exercise them ourselves, we cannot deny them to others.

Which makes it an important bit of strategy to make people feel cowed and unwilling to assert their own rights voluntarily before then seeking to actively take them away from others who might try to defend them.

imo, human rights exist. full stop.
they are not ‘given’. they cannot be taken away.

- they can and often are suppressed by ‘the state’

- they are not always ‘recognized’ at large (possibly because no one really ever thought about it, or maybe a sea change event occurred that made something relevant)

On the issue of “proving himself innocent,” how does one go about that?

Our system of justice demands a prosecutor prove someone guilty, not the other way round.

As for TERFs, they’re an Astroturf group from right-wing groups such as the Heritage Foundation, which funds their operations. TERFs are a specific group with the aim of dividing the LGBT+ community.

If you pick a different name to identify them, such groups will then go after that name.

There’s no way to get there, at least not until the number of white Christians drops pretty low. The whining would be deafening, and you would get plenty of middle of the road types that would oppose removing it.

Human rights are specifically defined by societies. They vary by place and time. They do not exist by some sort of “objective lawgiver” (smacking of religion), but defined by people.

Before the Enlightenment, did most people have such things as free speech in most societies? Do property rights exist outside a framework of laws to defend them?

This again has to do with one particular town council dispensing with the Pledge, not an outright ban on those who wish to recite it.

But remember, broadcast news is less about information as it is about incitement.

operative words “town council”

local. not county. not state. certainly not federal.
what’s a pledge to the united states got to do with a town?

certainly the council had the power to decide to use the pledge before meetings in the first place
how can they not have the same power to decide not to use it?

I’ll say the Pledge of Allegiance at least once because I have to to become a citizen. Beyond that, I have no specific desire to say it. You shouldn’t need to say a pledge to prove you love this country.

Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t say the pledge, because it’s idolatry.

i dont quite agree.
how human rights are recognized and/or enforced are defined by societies.

before the enlightenment… is my point that sometimes things arent recognized till they are - hence “enlightenment’

defending property rights is not the same as ‘having’ them in the first place

Philosophers and lawyers bicker about what grounds human rights. Do we acknowledge them and use government power to protect against their violation simply because we have a history of doing it? Does a right just pop into existence as soon as a certain number of human beings clamors for getting a law passed in its name?

Danger says no:

no one is ‘granted’ extra/new human rights (the emphasis on human)

it is merely supporting the enforcement of allowing people to exercise rights they always had - and were unable to exercise because they were repressed, or went unquestioned/unrecognized

i.e. - civil rights weren’t new rights granted or given to blacks. that would be absurd. those rights were always there. they were repressed by governments (local, state and federal) and those who had power.

i think these types of rights are are intrinsic, though their exercise may be repressed by others

- i have a right to be safe and secure in my person
- i have a right to keep things i come by that i didnt take (steal) from someone else
- i have a right to be mostly left alone unless i choose to live in a group(society)

there are more

At the reform synagogue Saturday morning service I attended, we recited a prayer that included the following passages:

Let them beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks.
Let nation not lift up sword against nation
nor learn war any more.
You shall not hate your brother or your sister in your heart.
The stranger that sojourns with you
shall be accepted as your equal,
for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.
“Why do you crush My people and oppress the poor?” asks God.
We know that the Eternal One defends the poor
and upholds the rights of the needy.

Of course, reciting words is easy — it’s actions that matter.

Unlike father:

A video of a man calling police to report a black man he suspected of trespassing has spread across social media, becoming the latest in a series of viral recordings showing black people being subjected to 911 calls for seemingly trivial or nonexistent offenses.

The incident was filmed and posted July 4 by software engineer Wesley Michel, and appears to take place at the entrance of a condo building on Van Ness Avenue, where Michel was waiting to visit with a friend. In the video, another man, accompanied by his young son, confronts Michel for his credentials to enter the building, and then calls police to report the “trespasser,” over the boy’s protestations.

As the altercation escalates, the man’s son appears increasingly distressed, pleading with his father to “just go.”

“Daddy, please don’t,” the young boy says, through sobs. “It’s the better. I agree with him, let’s go. Daddy I don’t like this, let’s go.”

Eventually, Michel’s friend arrives, and the 911 caller walks away from the building, telling police that the incident appears to resolved. The video ends mid-sentence as the two men continue to argue.

The bots are everywhere spreading the story that Trump banned Epstein from Mar-A-Lago. (In private tags so LGF doesn’t get spidered into spreading this crap)

They are pre-emptively distancing him because as more and more comes out, Trump is likely to be implicated by association

A few days ago there was an article about the $40 billion (I think) in pork he brought home. Just divide that bundle by household and ask “how much did you get?” They got squat. Who got that money??????

Russians who own aluminum assets

JUST IN: British Foreign Sec. Hunt, who is running to succeed PM May as prime minister, responds to Pres. Trump:

“these comments are disrespectful and wrong to our Prime Minister and my country. Your diplomats give their private opinions to Sec. Pompeo and so do ours!”

They are not putting up with this shit or making excuses, unlike most of the American media.

Trump is really that fucking thin-skinned that he takes umbrage at private opinions from a leaked document, as if he expects the entire world to speak of him only in hushed, reverent tones.

President Trump defends his embattled Labor secretary over Epstein case; asserts he had a “falling out” with Epstein a number of years ago, but won’t explain what triggered the falling out.

The goods Epstein had delivered were past their sell-by date…

A long time ago, (back in the 80’s), I had a $50 per month plan with a $5,000 deductible.

That was not health insurance, that was anti-bankruptcy insurance in the event I got hit by a truck or fell off a cliff somewhere.

Even with ACA, the GOP in Wisconsin ensured that i still could not afford insurance that didn’t have insanely high deductibles. My VA medical care more than makes up for it.
