6-Year-Old Humanitarian Brings Hope to Refugee Kids Across the World

This six year old has visited refugee camps. I couldn’t find a link to the story on WFAA that’s an update to this one, but she raised the $50,000 in order to open a school for refugee kids in a camp in Greece, considered the worst camp in the world.

From two threads ago:

re: #254 Blind Frog Belly White

“Hey, but this industry is different! We work hard, we play hard! Women in this industry are tough! They love the banter!”

According to some folks who did Sexual Harassment training at a place i worked, EVERY industry says this.

When I rose in rank in the Navy where I was put in charge of things, I would get the same. They would get the same answer from me geared toward a military job: If you don’t know where the line is, you’d better find out and stay far away from it. Fraternization is a UCMJ offence, and I won’t have some of my sailors mistreated under my watch.

The key word there was “sailor.” The Navy doesn’t see “female sailors” and “male sailors” (though for much of my time women were restricted from some jobs), they see “sailors.”

During my time in Spain, one man (my night shift supervisor) crossed that line (fraternization). When the woman came to me to complain, he was on report by the end of the day and removed from his position. When the division officer got that, he added the offences of disobeying a lawful order and adultery. Dude was out of the Navy (and his wife left him) not too long afterward.

My rating was one that was majority-women because it was a non-combat rating. (The same rating my mother was when she was in the Navy, fancy that.)

re: #72 Hecuba’s daughter

So Epstein’s wealth is due to
1. Facilitating money laundering
or
2. Running a global human trafficking ring
or
3. Maybe running a Madoff style scam?

Blackmailing very wealthy people. VERY wealthy people.

Then laundering it through his fake hedge fund.

Christian pastor makes out with the flag during hour-long prayer rant (Goes to Deadstate)

A common adage in American politics, sometimes attributed (though wrongly so) to author Sinclair Lewis, is that, “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.” Pastor Hank Kunneman’s preachings seem close to matching that sentiment, although in his latest tirade, during an Independence Day prayer event he hosted, it was he who was wrapped around the American flag, and not the opposite.

In a Facebook post he made prior to Independence Day, Kunneman, who heads One Voice Ministries out of Omaha, Nebraska, urged his followers to tune into his program to “pray for the United States of America” on the country’s birthday.

“We are in a new era in the earth and in the United States of America. We’ve got a specific word that the Lord has spoken about this July 4th being such a prophetic moment here in the United States,” Kunneman said.

He asked his viewers to listen to his program, which aired the day before Independence Day. His performance was “spirited” to say the least, highly animated, and claimed that God blessed the United States specifically on July 4th.

[clip]

“New York City, the reason why — 9/11, our nation was pierced, this nation has never been the same, the nations of the earth have never been the same, God is trying to re-establish a blood right,” Kunneman said in January 2018. “It’s no coincidence the president is from New York, that is where the towers fell. He also is part of Trump Tower — the towers fell. He is part of world trade — the World Trade Center. God is revisiting this nation to establish a blood right. Whoever gets the blood right gets the legal right to rule.”

re: #41 Hecuba’s daughter

California is home to the most million-dollar real estate markets; it has 111 currently, and is expected to add 14 more cities over the next year.

Note over half are in California.

That’s because the coast is covered with small incorporated areas.

I can look at San Diego county and count several. While the city of San Diego itself will not get over $1M (we’re assuming here single family dwellings and not other structures), because the eastern part of the city has very many houses of only say $700k price tags, the coast can be read off south to north: Coronado, La Jolla (if the statistician wants to count it separate from the city of San Diego, though it is part of the city), Del Mar, Solana Beach, Cardiff, Encinitas, Carlsbad. (Oceanside probably is not over $1M because of the the huge military contingent.) And of course Rancho Santa Fe, inland neighbor of Encinitas and the home of mammondom on Earth. So there’s 8 of your 200 right there. And I could keep going north county by county.

This is down to that good old American value - capitalism.

People want to live by the ocean, and not just here in California.

So while there are many communities with median house prices over $1M, that is sort of skewed by the fact that most of them are small in population and sit on the prime real estate on this planet.

Anyway, this is why when I watch My Lottery Dream Home I do so sort of nonplussed at the big deal people make over winning a million dollars. Doing so just wouldn’t go far around here. (Not that I would mind winning a $1M, but doing so wouldn’t buy me a house I’d want to live in around here.)

re: #41 Hecuba’s daughter

Also from your link:

The private market is clearly failing.

On the contrary, the private market is working spectacularly, doing exactly what it is supposed to do: pricing demand.

Housing prices are so high around here because millions of people want to live here.

High demand, high prices.

A million dollars would buy a helluva lotta home here. Plus, we have a four hundred mile beach. (No ocean, but you can’t have everything.)

Of course, you do need a lot more than $1M to support a million dollar home — annual property taxes, utilities, home maintenance, etc. will require significant additional wealth to retain the property.

re: #49 Hecuba’s daughter

Of course, you do need a lot more than $1M to support a million dollar home — annual property taxes, utilities, home maintenance, etc. will require significant additional wealth to retain the property.

Exactly.

One needs a retirement nest egg, other than the house, of roughly the same value of the house, to provide the income needed not just for taxes (which are low here in California) but also maintenance and other expenses.

So if you have a million dollar house, you also need a million dollar retirement fund (or equivalent.)

And that is one of the problems not touched upon in the NYT article.

Since many people are house poor in the high priced areas, meaning nearly all their assets are in the property, in the long run neighborhoods cannot be maintained without flipping houses to new folk. And the local communities can’t raise taxes much either.

Which means there is a real problem beyond just the fact that so many poor people can’t afford a place to live.

In effect, entire communities can’t continue in the long run, as in a century.

But in this country we don’t do long term thinking, so no one cares about that.

Looks like there’s a power plant on fire north of Moscow.

(via Google Translate):

Rescuers are checking information about the fifty-meter fire in the Moscow region, the regional emergency department headquarters reported. “A message was received from an eyewitness about a 50-meter-high torch near the 90th kilometer of the Moscow Ring Road near Mytishchi,” the source said. Firefighters left for the place.

At first, the emergency services said that the gas station was on fire. Later, the Emergencies Ministry said that the fire occurred at a high-pressure station in the Northern Thermal Power Plant.

According to preliminary data, no victims. Aviation is being prepared to extinguish, and a fire train also went to the scene.

Guy Who Says God Sends Natural Disasters to Punish Gays Has His Home Destroyed in a Natural Disaster (Deadstate)

Not satisfied with cherrypicking the Bible, Christians also cherrypick what they say themselves.

Tony Perkins, president of the anti-gay religious lobbying group the Family Research Council, had his home destroyed by the massive flooding ravaging Southern Louisiana this week.

Although no one wants to celebrate a person losing their home, the destruction of Perkins’ house isn’t without irony, considering that he’s claimed in the past that natural disasters are God’s way of punishing an increasingly gay-friendly world.

Calling into his own radio show, Perkins described the flood as being of “biblical proportions,” adding that he and his family will have to live in a camper for 6 months until the damage is repaired.

But Perkins was careful to point out that this particular flood wasn’t because of the gays, but rather an “incredible, encouraging spiritual exercise to take you to the next level in your walk with an almighty and gracious God who does all things well.”

Yup, God does all things well. Floods, hurricanes, children’s cancer, epidemics, &c.

New Friends, New Life out of Dallas TX is a group helping women and girls find lives after trafficking. Money from these rich sacks of shit could help form more groups doing this work. We also need a LOT more support for male victims and survivors who face challenges of their own. It’s not enough to get the traffickers out of business and into prison, there must be resources for victims to become survivors. Bay View, Michigan (founded as a United Methodist-only town, which once had a “no blacks” requirement), has entered into a consent decree with the Federal government to end its requirement that people wanting to move to the town were required to be United Methodists.

(The UMC is one of those so-called liberal denominations.)

friendlyatheist.patheos.com

They tried to backdoor their ordinances to repeal the overt ban on any other faith than United Methodists by trying to make prospective residents aware by word-of-mouth they would not be welcome.

The consent decree admits no fault from Bay View (though the no-fault agreement meant they had to pay $75,000 attorney fees to the plaintiffs because they’re not guilty of religious discrimination, no sir). The federal government will monitor the Bay View board for five years to ensure they remain within the consent decree’s strictures.

Majorities of U.S. veterans, public say the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were not worth fighting (Pew Research)

A majority of veterans line up almost precisely with the general populace in the opinion the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were not worth fighting.

Amongst veterans, the difference between those who fought in those wars and those who did not are insignificant.

Amongst those who identify as Republicans versus Democrats, Republicans were much more likely to support the wars, but still upside-down in the polling.

Amongst veterans, there was no difference in opinions between rank or combat experience.

There were similar opinions about intervention in Syria.

Views do differ significantly by party, however. Republican and Republican-leaning veterans are much more likely than veterans who identify with or lean toward the Democratic Party to say the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were worth fighting: 45% of Republican veterans vs. 15% of Democratic veterans say the war in Iraq was worth fighting, while 46% of Republican veterans and 26% of Democratic veterans say the same about Afghanistan. The party gaps are nearly identical among the public.

Looks like the Germans aren’t fucking around with the Identitarian Movement anymore.

Germany’s domestic intelligence agency (BfV) classified the Identitarian Movement as an extreme right-wing group on Thursday, a sign that authorities are increasingly worried about radicals with anti-Islamic and racist views.

The murder last month of a prominent regional politician by a suspected neo-Nazi shook Germans and prompted the interior minister to warn that right-wing extremism was a threat to Germany’s democratic system.

The Identitarian Movement has not been directly linked to the killing, but the intelligence agency said the group discriminated against non-Europeans and Muslims and as such was incompatible with the constitution.

The official classification makes it easier for the agency to monitor the group’s activities and members - of which it says there are 600 in Germany. The movement, with French roots, has been under scrutiny for about three years.

If AfD fractures - which it probably will in the long run - then they’re finished, especially if they break apart into multiple competing factions, each chasing the same electorate.

I’d think they’re too extreme to be easily merged into one of the mainstream German political parties.

There’s two separate systems. One that’s hitting the Mid-Atlantic to Quebec today/tonight, and then there’s TS2 - aka Barry, which is likely to strengthen to a hurricane before coming ashore in Louisiana and it’s already causing damaging flooding across southern Louisiana.

Barry’s a crazy system - it’s the first time I can recall a TS forming this early and this far north in the Gulf that could become a hurricane. It’s also going to come ashore while the Mississippi is still well above normal flow rates, which means any storm surge or localized flooding is going to go even worse.

I fear for the disaster response.

One thing that will lead to that is that no mainstream party wants to enter into a nationwide coalition with them. If they move to the center to facilitate that, they will lose their most hard-core supporters and their very reason for existence.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The more we know about Trump or Epstein, the worse it gets. The rich and powerful are able to avoid the full consequences of their actions. For Epstein it was a sweetheart deal that got him spending less time in prison than some black person would get for a marijuana possession.

And yet Trump was elected knowing that he was a sex predator. That was his allure to his racist and misogynistic base. Will any new revelations re: Epstein affect Trump’s support? I doubt it. His base is immune to facts, logic, or the fact that Trump breaks the law daily.

We now apparently have video proof that Trump engaged in assault of a woman, not that his base cares. That’s on top of all the other criminal acts. The GOP continues to protect Trump, meaning that the scales of justice are firmly planted on keeping the GOP and Trump in power, regardless of how many crimes committed or how many people come forward corroborating what Trump said all those years ago in the Access Hollywood video - that he can grab women by the genitals with impunity.

Muslim man saves kosher bakery in the Hamptons… now serves kosher/halal food.

The Beach Bakery & Grand Café, in Westhampton Beach, on Long Island, is a local institution. Since 1988, it has served black-and-whites, baguettes, pastries and challah from its bakery counter, and made custom wedding cakes for its community.

But there’s a reason for the challah, and a reason its restaurant only serves vegetarian and fish dishes: the Beach Bakery is certified kosher, the only such establishment in Long Island’s East End, a popular summer vacation spot. When the bakery and restaurant went up for sale last year, local residents worried that the new owner wouldn’t be interested in preserving its kosher certification.

Turns out the eventual buyer actually wanted to add a certification, Newsday reported: Rashid Sulehri, owner of two other local establishments, is Muslim, and says not only will the Beach Bakery stay kosher, but it will become halal, too, so devout Muslims can eat there.

“It’s a dream come true,” Sulehri said. “Sons of Abraham can sit under one roof and they get a chance to see how much in common they have instead of staying away from each other and just thinking how different they are from each other.”

Sulehri’s pledge is an example of “interfaith cooperation and coexistence,” said Rabbi Marc Schneier, leader of The Hampton Synagogue.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement plans to begin raids across the country Sunday to arrest thousands of family members who already have court orders to be removed, according to a US official.

The effort comes weeks after President Donald Trump had tweeted ICE’s plans to conduct the raids, then delayed the operation after additional details became public.
The New York Times first reported on the raids, saying they are expected to take place in at least 10 cities, will occur “over multiple days” and will include “collateral” deportations in which “authorities might detain immigrants who happened to be on the scene, even though they were not targets of the raids.”

This guy controlled F1 for about 50 years. WTF?

Ecclestone: I’d take a bullet for Vladimir Putin

“If someone had a machine gun and was prepared to shoot Putin, I would stand in front of him…” he said in a wide-ranging interview on politics and how he plans to spend his years in retirement. “Because he’s a good guy. He’s never done anything that isn’t doing good things for people.”

When asked what he thought about the high-profile assassination attempt on the Skripals in Salisbury last year, Ecclestone said: “[Putin] didn’t do that. He would be too busy to be worrying about that sort of thing. Storytellers make these things up.”

Ecclestone also reiterated comments he made in 2017 that the Russian’s power should extend to the entire continent of Europe.

“I would like him running Europe. We haven’t got anybody, so it couldn’t be any worse. He does what he says he is going to do… I am not a supporter of democracy. You need a dictator.

“As a dictator, you say, ‘This is what I’m going to do’. In a democracy, it gets watered down.”

U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine (both D-VA) have joined Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI) in cosponsoring legislation to protect the decennial census from partisan whims aimed at intimidating respondents and curbing participation. The Census Improving Data and Enhanced Accuracy (Census IDEA) Act will help safeguard the integrity of the 2020 census by ensuring that any proposed changes to the count are adequately studied and researched prior to being added to the questionnaire. This follows a United States Supreme Court decision on June 27 that blocked the Trump Administration from adding a citizenship question to the 2020 census, citing insufficient justification for adding the question.

“The census is a critical undertaking in our democracy that helps determine the number of representatives and federal dollars given to states. Additionally, many businesses rely on census population data to decide where to open new stores, buy advertising, or deploy wireless broadband infrastructure. Therefore, it’s extremely important that we ensure the accuracy of the count and prevent it from being shaped by political motives,” said the Senators. “This bill will ensure that any additional question be presented with enough time for Congress to review its effects and help keep the census an independent tool for the American people.”

they start printing with the question
it immediately goes to court (the suits are already written)
it drags on and on….and at some point they deploy the forms with the question on them

Follows their same MO in carrying out FEC violations in getting elected. Paying a fine is a minor after the fact thing after winning.

This is one of those complicated, the consumer shouldn’t have to try to figure it out things:

CVS, Cigna, and other major players in the pharmacy benefits management space rose in surged on Thursday after the Trump administration said it will abandon its effort to eliminate rebates from government drug plans.

The now-scrapped proposal would have banned PBMs — or intermediaries who negotiate between drug manufacturers and insurance plans — from collecting portions of drug rebates for themselves as profit. PBMs would pass rebates to patients covered by Medicare and Medicaid and find a different way to increase revenue.

The rebate rule served as a centerpiece for the president’s plan to reduce drug prices, and would’ve deprived PBMs of a crucial portion of their overall revenue stream.

And we can’t count on a recession to hurt Trump in the polls . New unemployment claims remain very low, 209k reported today, and job creation contunues to chug along as it has for the last 9 years. Ranked-Choice Voting Is Starting to Catch On

Many Democrats blame those Democrats who voted for Jill Stein or Gary Johnson for electing Donald Trump. The people who voted for the minor candidates reply that Hillary Clinton was a deeply flawed candidate and that they wanted to show everyone that they couldn’t stomach her. It seems like an impossible dilemma, but there is a way out, and it starting to catch on. Ranked-choice voting,

If states adopt a law like Maine’s for the general election, it could remove a lot of acrimony

i’m not one to use the word ‘but’ a lot BUT there is no impossible dilemma as long as ranked choice voting ISNT an option. So DON’T be an ass and vote third party to ‘make a statement’ because it doesn’t actually make the statement you want to make.

(further, and as an aside, if you thought clinton was so ‘deeply flawed’ that you are happy with what we have today, you are an idiot)

“The alkaloids are produced from ergot, which is often found on grains. Those who know how can produce the basic materials for the drug LSD, one of the most powerful hallucinogens known, from the mould. The unprocessed raw material, however, is a lot less potent and the danger of intoxication is minimal.”

Jeffrey Epstein’s Fortune May Be More Illusion Than Fact

Just like another complicit douche-canoe.

When federal prosecutors announced sex-trafficking charges against Jeffrey Epstein this week, they described him as “a man of nearly infinite means.” They argued that his vast wealth — and his two private jets — made him a flight risk.

Mr. Epstein is routinely described as a billionaire and brilliant financier, and he rubbed elbows with the powerful, including former and future presidents. Even after his 2008 guilty plea in a prostitution case in Florida, he promoted himself as a financial wizard who used arcane mathematical models, and he often dropped the names of Nobel Prize-winning friends. He told potential clients that they had to invest a minimum of $1 billion. At his peak in the early 2000s, a magazine profile said he employed 150 people, some working out of the historic Villard Houses on Madison Avenue.

Much of that appears to be an illusion, and there is little evidence that Mr. Epstein is a billionaire.

Also from the story:

Mr. Epstein, 66, is doubtless very rich: His real estate alone — one of Manhattan’s largest private mansions, a Palm Beach estate, a Paris apartment, his own Caribbean island and a huge New Mexico ranch — is worth more than $200 million. His investment firm reported having $88 million in capital from its shareholders in 2002.

It’s very possible he has close to a billion dollars in assets. But like most of the uber wealthy he’s probably highly leveraged and not very liquid.

A Florida cop planted meth on random drivers, police say. One lost custody of his daughter.

The story has a picture of him. He’s the very definition of a pig.

Wester, who was fired last September, was arrested Wednesday and charged with 52 counts of racketeering, false imprisonment, official misconduct, fabricating evidence and possession of controlled substances, among other charges. He’s accused of indiscriminately targeting innocent drivers and hauling them off to jail after planting meth or marijuana in their vehicles while feigning a “search.”

“There is no question that Wester’s crimes were deliberate and that his actions put innocent people in jail,”

One case, that of Teresa Odom, was illuminating — appearing to capture Wester holding an unknown object in his left hand shortly before “discovering” meth in her truck, in the rare case his body camera was left on.

“Hi, how are you?” Wester asked her in a friendly voice as he rolled up to her window, according to footage released to the news media. “The reason for is, um, your brake lights: They work one minute, and then the next minute they don’t work.”

He took her license, left momentarily, and returned to ask if he could search her vehicle. She said it was no problem with a shrug, as long as she could take her phone with her. “Hang tight, Ms. Odom,” He grabbed a pair of gloves from his cruiser — then appears to be holding a tiny plastic baggie inside his left hand, according to the video and affidavit.

The affidavit describes it like a magician’s sleight of hand: “Without putting on the glove, Deputy Wester’s left hand dropped out of view, down toward the front of the driver’s seat, and after a brief pause, reappeared empty.”

Shortly thereafter, Wester pulls a tiny plastic bag out of Odom’s purse: “Oh, Ms. Odom, how about this?” Wester asked, confronting Odom with the drugs.

Yeah, I know, but the stakes were obviously pretty fucking dire in 2016 and they still pulled the pin.

Now, with over 2.5 years of watching Republicans basically ignore rule of law and the Constitution, they’re getting ready to do it again. Fuck these people.

The whole thing is just discouraging. The woman across the street from me, who has a daughter, heard the Hollywood Access clip and still voted for Trump. Contractor up the street voted for the guy who made his money by fucking over contractors, mostly because he didn’t think a woman could be President.

Then, on top of that, add in the upcoming Russian interference (that the GOP won’t stop because it helps them) and the fucking idiot Bernie Bros.

I’m counting on a lot of people who are too stupid and lazy to make an adult, informed opinion at the ballot box next year. Not holding my breath here.

PS: fuck Chris Matthews. Every time someone mentions Reagan, he’s one click away on Expedia from flying to Ronnie’s gravesite and blowing his corpse. Matthews is a loudmouth jackass who fucked over Democrats twice in the 80’s, but everyone thinks he’s a genius because he can’t speak below 100dB.

AOC is making Pelosi look like a right winger. That’s either by accident or design, but it undercuts the GOP claims that Pelosi is a far left socialist.

But Overton window stuff aside, Pelosi is not taking the fight to Trump and holding all of his criminally corrupt people accountable, including all those who are ignoring the subpoenas and contempt. Start throwing people in jail for contempt of Congress. That’s what Trump understands and fears. He is a bully, and the way to stop a bully is to hit’em on the nose. They’re going after people who have been ordered to leave by court order, but anyone else they can pick up that fits their definition of needing to be deported will be picked up as well. So, if dad has been ordered to leave, but mom’s status is undetermined, then she can be detained as well.

He had a safe at that residence containing underage girls in lewd poses and potentially child porn.

He remains a public threat - no bail should be offered, and he remains a flight risk even with the conditions provided.

He would still be in a position to oversee the destruction of evidence and the intimidation of potential witnesses…

Oh I remember Tweety being one of the Four Horsemen demanding Clinton’s impeachment along with Michael Kelly, Tim Russert and Maureen Dowd.

Jelena Ostapenko’s Doubles Partner Has Endured Too Much Friendly Fire

Jelena Ostapenko is one of the fiercest power hitters in the women’s game. She hasn’t quite lived up to the promise of her 2017 French Open win, and she had a disappointing first-round loss in the singles draw at this Wimbledon, but she’s still alive in the quarterfinals of the mixed doubles. And she is still clobbering the tennis ball, as her partner Robert Lindstedt learned firsthand during Monday’s match.

Then, today, Ostapenko bonked a 93-mph serve right off the head of Lindstedt, who held up two fingers to keep count.

So is Trump going full Andrew Jackson on the census? If that wouldn’t prompt impeachment proceedings then I’m not sure what the point is. I understand that I tend to be more liberal and participatory in forums such as this, and that as a result, my perspective relative to the general public could be skewed. However, I think Pelosi would really be threatening to depress voter enthusiasm if Trump directs the citizenship question be included and she does nothing.

I begin to wonder whether there’s something askew in the wiring of 25-40% of the population. Seriously. There seems to be a substantial portion of the population that is driven by paranoid fantasy, to become ever more fearful and angry.

Meanwhile, I feel like the anger and energy on our side is sputtering out from fatigue.

Perhaps that’s the difference between us - they can continue to feed on anger indefinitely, whereas we can’t maintain it. I believe that makes us mentally healthier, but it also makes keeping up the energy to defeat them harder.

He has previously referred to Buttigieg as “Alfred E. Newman”.

the president is a loon

he talks like a loon
he tweets like a loon
a loon is in charge of our government and does this with his time all day long

his administration, the R senate, and the media are more than ‘letting him do this’
they are encouraging it and embracing it

what a loon you picked to be your standard bearer

Between that, and a story about a cop who shot a kid while trying to shoot a totally nonthreatening family dog - and got off because of “qualified immunity”, I’ve really about had it with cops. I feel like the canonization of police as Heroes Who Protect Us From Unspeakable Danger is emboldening the worst elements - not only the bad cops, but also the bad WITHIN EACH cop.

But stories about cops shooting dogs always make my blood boil, so I may be less than completely rational and fair right now.

About 57% still support what Trump is doing in the Middle East, but this is mainly because of tribalism.

Anyone who has actually served in these theaters who is not lost to all reason and analytical thinking, now knows that these wars were bullshit.

It’s hard not to say “I told you so” to all my stupid fucking relatives who yelled & screamed at me back in 2003-5 about Iraq and how it was going to usher in a new Paradise On Earth Just You Wait And See Fancy Libtard!

Also too, who cares? As long as I am not being excluded from a conversation that I should be a part of, I really don’t care what language you’re speaking. And my default assumption is that if you are having a side conversation with someone in another language, even if I am standing right next to you, it doesn’t concern me.
If you start pointing at me and laughing, I might have a slightly different take on it.

I suspect this will be to get it in the ACS.

But we’ll need to validate and verify that the census itself does not have the question on it about citizenship, and then make sure that all the census questionnaires are returned and counted.

re: #297 Khal Wimpo (the extinguisher of tiki torches)

I told a wingnut friend in 2003 that given GOP incompetence and the reality of trying to fight a war in Afghanistan/Iran/Iraq/etc we’d still be there 20 years later and that I expected our then toddler children to be drafted about now for that fight. I believe that only Obama’s election has prevented a renewal of the draft. Had the GOP stayed in power, they’d have already started a war in Iran and that would be impossible to have enough manpower for without a draft of both men and women. I must admit, I am grateful for my son’s mental illness since it protects him from that possibility.

I’m a vet and served willingly in the cold war under Ronnie Fucking Raygun. But that was nothing compared to the hell that the Bush League put these troops through.

“it’s time to treat tech platforms like publishers”

- publishers are active gate keepers to their ‘printing presses’ or mechanisms.
- they are free to accept any work they want
- they are free to reject any work they want
- im no expert. i think there is virtually no such thing as ‘discriminatory rejection’
- they even assist by editing the material and with layout, art, etc.

- the ‘tech platforms’ he means are merely ‘printing presses’
— they give you access to the publication machine
- the owners (presumably) dont participate in what’s posted or not
- with the exception that they each have house rules that are supposed to be fair and uniformly enforced

Yup. Protesting the war in Iraq got people branded as traitors by Geo. W. Bush (if you’re not with us, you’re against us).

I did not protest though I opposed it. I was too busy looking for food.

Yeah, standing outside the Federal Building on Wilshire and getting my picture taken by a bunch of angry-looking FBI types was not a highlight of 2003.

Fox and the right-wing worldview is only viable if you choose to live in a fantasyland bubble.

The ones who can’t live in fantasy, find themselves feeling lost. Worse yet, abused by friends and family who demand that they go along with the Fox/Hate Radio line that everything in the Iraq/Afghanistan was a GLORIOUS VICTORY FOR THE FATHERLAND.
