This is a *very short, VERY SHORT* list.

Agreed. All the arguing here about spending village board money on infrastructure improvements in my final months on the board. The town wanted them, but didn’t seem to understand their complaints about how poor our sand streets were was because the town was not spending money on road gravel.

The very last thing I accomplished on the board was getting a purchase order for proper road gravel through, and paying a grading company to spread it.

We now have proper streets, and a few people have thanked me for that. (I don’t know if they are the same people who voted for me though.)

Painting our water system pumps and plumbing (which also cost a bunch of money) was also an infrastructure maintenance project. A lot of people couldn’t see why that needed to be done on our dime (other than the state told us to).

Two infrastructure items here the town fully supports is our public library and park.

For such a tiny town, we have a huge collection of books, access to the Internet (which includes access to pay services like medical and legal databases), &c.

My town has spent sales tax windfalls on cool things too. Town center has a nice Town Hall, library, Recreation Center (with waterslide and lazy pool), baseball fields, gun range, new open space, bike paths, and a nice concert venue.

We don’t have the benefit of such a large business like Costco here. (There are none anywhere around here.)

State sales taxes don’t support municipalities here; property taxes do. Someone a couple years ago proposed instituting a village sales tax (state law would allow us to impose 1/8%) to hit tourists on US-26 going to Yellowstone and using the gun shop for hunting ammo.

I opposed it, and it was defeated. I despise flat taxes anyway, and I showed the tax would actually hurt our own village more than any alleged tourist income. It would have also hit other businesses in town which do not cater to tourists, such as the beauty salon and the art teacher (she also sells art supplies).

Generally I agree with Stonkettle, but this time there’s a lot more going on.

What Trump is doing is a pas-de-deux with the provocateurs who shill “free speech” while breaking platforms’ rules. They create the problem, create the controversy such that their actions aren’t the problem but a necessary reaction, then feed the “solution” to a complicit authority figure who’s willing to ignore reality (and precedent) to introduce a “fix” that advantages their goals and positions.

It’s working the refs until they give in.

These are people who don’t care about truth, only the utility of information. Given the chance—and social media plus instant communication behind the scenes means ample chances—they’ll will claim that something is true until they have the power to make it “true” by top-down edict.

Meet The Commanders Of Mike Pompeo’s God Hates Fags Commission On ‘Human Rights’! (Wonkette)

You’d be unsurprised to learn they feel only rights under “natural law” (the Christian position going all the way back to Thomas Aquinas saying the only rights you have are the ones God gives you — but God never turns up to tell you what they are) actually are rights.

All that stuff we’ve done since the Constitution was written? Free speech? Freeing slaves? Desegregation? Women’s right to vote? None of that is natural law, and all of them have been opposed on those grounds.

As human rights claims have proliferated, some claims have come into tension with one another, provoking questions and clashes about which rights are entitled to gain respect. Nation-states and international institutions remain confused about their respective responsibilities concerning human rights.

Human rights clashing with other human rights, whatever (gay) could he possibly (gay) mean? (He means God Hates Fags. And also women.)

re: #27 The Ghost of Quesos Past

It’s the same process you can see at play between the Roberts Court and the people trying to justify gerrymandering…and now with the batted-down attempt to switch legal teams regarding the census.

It’s arguing in bad faith—all rhetoric, no central belief in the validity of law, precedent, or separation of powers—but in front of a complicit arbiter who’s willing to patiently wait until an statement that is plausible is introduced.

Basically, everything becomes theater. Veracity is substituted with versimilitude, and all thought becomes aesthetic.

I mean, we can see this when we look at pundits and grifters. They encourage people to not have a consistent episteme, and substitute a sort of gut-feeling emotional impression paired with ritualized (highly emotional) repetition of rote statements that generally involve the inherent wrongness of anyone that is deemed “other” and thus no need to argue seriously or give ear to good faith counterarguments.

Yes. The plot is a WW2 Army soldier infiltrated the Nazi Army and was able to get close enough to Hitler to kill him in 1943. The Nazis continued their genocidal rampage for two more years; the guy who killed himself in the Berlin bunker was really a body double.

The cover story for the Allies was really Hitler committed suicide in 1945.

After a brief encounter with a gang of thugs who try to steal his car, the FBI and a Canadian official comes to him asking him to kill Bigfoot.

Bigfoot is in the wild country of Alberta and Saskatchewan, and is carrying a disease which infects all animals and kills them. Canada has set up a ring of fire to enclose Bigfoot within a 50 mile radius, but the USA plans on nuking Canada if Bigfoot is not killed.

The Economist sponsoring Steve Bannon in a supposed “free speech” rally was why I canceled my subscription. I told them that, and I had the senior editor of the magazine writing me back and forth trying to get me to uncancel. They wouldn’t take “quit promoting Nazis” for an answer. They eventually refunded the remainder of my print subscription.

I see they haven’t gotten any better. The answer to that brain-dead question should be “a woman can wear what she wants.”

The executive director of Human Rights Watch has an op-ed on Pompeo’s so-called human rights commission.

Beware the Trump administration’s plans for ‘fresh thinking’ on human rights (goes to the Washington Post)

A pull-quote from the article:

The fundamental rights set out in these treaties are clear, but the Trump administration is unhappy that they are cited to uphold, for example, reproductive freedom or the rights of LGBT people not to face discrimination. So there is reason to fear that this exercise in identifying “unalienable” rights is a unilateral attempt to rewrite international law according to the administration’s conservative social views.

Those fears are only intensified by Pompeo’s selection of Mary Ann Glendon, a prominent scholar opposed to abortion and same-sex marriage, to head the commission. Pompeo himself, in a Wall Street Journal op-ed, complained that “rights claims are often aimed more at rewarding interest groups and dividing humanity into subgroups,” apparently taking issue with rights that protect women and LGBT people.

When I lived in Berlin, the Sufis I knew would frequently roam the streets of Berlin looking a lot like Jedi Knights with fezzes.

No one really batted an eye. That having been said, even the Sufis looked askance at the niqab. As it was explained, not being able to see another person’s face can be unsettling - and not to mention the Sufis regarded it as trying to impose Arab cultural supremacy on Muslim women, which they were opposed to, being as they’re opposed to Wahhabism and Salafism in general.

And just think - the bikini was only a quarter century later (1946 - though it didn’t become popular until 20 years after that…..the bikini was considered quite scandalous when it first came out; the designer, Jacques Heim, had to hire a nude dancer to model it at fashion shows because regular models found it too risqué to sashay down the runway in).

Of course NOLA will need to be abandoned, eventually.

But as you note, the idiot who thinks people can just get and move doesn’t really care or know about how people live, mostly from week to week or month to month.

Also overlooked is that NOLA is a port, a major port. The Mississippi river is a major highway for grain going out, and southern Louisiana is key to the US petroleum industry.

So we can’t just abandon southern Louisiana anyway, even if you helped people move out.

Note that after Katrina a substantial population did not return. And that was a hard time for many.

St. Bagelcel: Incels lionize angry Bagel Boss dude as “our prophet,” “the hero manlets need and deserve” [UPDATED] (goes to We Hunted the Mammoth, more at the link).

The update refers to witness saying that what he thought was a woman mocking him over his stature was simply that woman smiling at him, which sent him off the deep end.

Viewers of the video quickly labeled the man an incel. And so did incels themselves, with the regulars on the Incels (dot) co forums
dubbing him St. Bagelcel — and hailing him as a new incel icon.

He’s “the hero us manlets need and deserve,” gushed someone called ManletHalfCurry.

Others went further. He “was speaking truth that is never spoken about the suffering of manlets,” wrote someone called ScornedStoic. “He’s our prophet.”

“He is my god now.,” declared desperatecel178.

Others lamented he didn’t go full on Isla Vista shooter, or issued threats against the guy who took him down.

Now that Trump has lost the census fight, his new plan is to gerrymander districts by the population of eligible voters, rather than total population, increasing the representation of old whites relative to communities with lots of children, immigrants and disenfranchised felons.

To borrow a conservative trope: Are you going to put them up in your house indefinitely? (Same goes for people who tell me to move.)

As Ben Shapiro said, all they have to do is sell their underwater homes to have the funds to move!

Yes, I have issues with covering the face in public, it is an accepted part of our open society and of law enforcement that you can see the face of the person you are dealing with.

IOW, America as a problem with the Deification Of The Asshole. We fucking adore bullies no matter what our American Dream myth says, we fucking hopelessly worship them and coddle them, because the bootstraps myth we’ve all been sold tells us that they’re the pinnacle of society, the successes, the ones who got to the top because they stepped on everyone because rugged individualism, fuck yeah.

Trump is the ultimate culmination in that cult worship of bullying.

In ordinary circumstances, the best way to beat a blackmailer or an extortionist is to come clean, to air that dirty laundry.

But these are no ordinary circumstances…..to put it mildly. Epstein may well have found the perfect vehicle for blackmail; a crime so monstrous, so abhorrent and so reviled, that the person being extorted simply cannot come forward.

A Catch-22 of perfect shit.

Trump’s a vain egotistical bully who also happens to be a racist know nothing. Everyone knows how to deal with him internationally, which is why his trade war has gone so poorly, he’s given away the farm to North Korea, and his Iran “policy” is a mess. Everywhere you turn, it’s a disaster, but Trump frames it all as success and his base loves him for it, even as their fortunes sag because the trade wars are hitting his base hardest.

Agriculture and manufacturing are taking it on the chin because China is slapping on targeted tariffs on agricultural products and Trump’s idiotic tariffs on raw metal imports means that manufacturers here (all of them) are seeing higher costs, which they can’t all pass on to customers.

If you need soothing sounds for whatever reason, this video might qualify.

It is by YouTuber Tibees (a physics and maths major).

Isaac Newton’s Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy (Principia Mathematica), originally published in 1687. This is a reading of the first section (definitions and laws of motion). Newton’s laws (at 36:23) and the definitions at the beginning are somewhat understandable but the rest of the passage is mostly incomprehensible.

In the latter half of the video, only the corollaries are read out and not their explanations which were often very visual and didn’t make sense to listen to. There is also a small section about absolute motion from the first scholium which is missing.

Ryan spent his entire time trying to overturn Obamacare, and the self-declared wonk had no alternative. It was the same vaporware/malware that Trump had - repeal and let people get their medically induced bankruptcies or just flat out die/suffer from lack of care.

In other words, Ryan’s outlook was the same as Trump. There was no separating the two. Ryan enabled Trump at every turn, and there was no moderating effect. No one has moderated Trump from within the GOP, because they all revert to their base - racist, misogynistic, and out to help the 1% at the expense of everyone else.

Once again, all the talk about cleaning up voter rolls comes from the fact that right wingers want to purge people and make it more difficult to vote. There are rules in various states that automatically purge those who haven’t voted in X number of years, and there are other rules in place that don’t always update the rolls when someone moves or passes away.

That latter bit is where the nonsensical calls of voter fraud come into play. These folks love to claim that voter fraud is widespread, when in every reputable study and examination of voting in the US, there’s a vanishingly small number of cases, and a bunch don’t even get prosecuted (as in the NC instance, where a daughter voted for her dead mother and the prosecutor (R) dropped the case because it was a vote for Trump).

The far greater harm is vote suppression, which deprives far more people the right to vote - and that’s the ongoing GOP effort over the past decade. Trump’s go-to right wing extremist Kobach would try and throw out votes, or claim voter fraud for typos. You know, like the one where Kobach’s team failed to properly spell Kobach’s first name.

Voter fraud is a ginned up controversy to cover for the GOP effort at voter suppression. Voter ID and rules to require ID make it more difficult to vote, especially among minority and elderly populations, who don’t always have proper ID, and these same states reduce the number of DMVs that are open, their hours, and target minority/poor locations for even steeper service cuts, limiting where/how they can get the very ID needed to vote.

This is a systematic effort to deprive people of their rights.

Yunno, in Germany and other parts of the world, everyone has a single registered home address, where you are then automatically registered as a voter.

And every citizen has a picture ID. Non-citizens have a residence permit ID.

There is no major discussion here of voter fraud or voter disenfranchisement, you show up to the polls with your valid ID and you are crossed off the list when you drop off your ballot.

Well, part of the problem is each state has its own election rules under the Constitution.

As such, you saw things here like Kansas trying to disenfranchise active duty military voters and their dependents, after Kansas passed its voter ID law (then spent insane amounts of money defending it against people who used federal mail-in ballots, like military personnel). Kansas claimed they could not check the ID of military personnel or dependents using federal absentee ballots, the federal government argued in court that was unconstitutional and unnecessary as absentee ballots from military personnel and dependents are countersigned by military officers rank O-4 and above. (That would be Sam Brownback’s term in Kansas, with Kris Kobach as his wingman.)

I don’t know where so many non-military voters get the idea that conservatives care about military personnel and veterans, because everything the GOP does screws us.

China Lake was shuttered following the quake, and personnel moved to another air base. It’s in the process of reopening.

The 4.4 quake in Washington is several magnitudes lower than the 6.6 or 7.1 quake that hit in CA.

It is possible that this could be a foreshock of a bigger quake in WA, but that’s nothing that can be predicted. It’s a different fault system in play, but the Cascadia system has been notoriously quiet, which means that the pressure has been building towards another big quake for years now.

Well, part of the problem is each state has its own election rules under the Constitution.

That made sense back in the days when votes had to be counted by hand and the results transported by courier to the seat of the EC.

I would just like to point out for argument’s sake (because it will never be implemented) that a system in which we all have a mandatory national picture ID (one for citizens, one for legal resident aliens) and a single registered address would do a lot to reduce issues of abuse of social services, any questions of voter fraud or disenfranchisement, or illegal employment.

Heck, one cannot even sign a lease, open a bank account, enroll one’s children in school or register a vehicle without showing ID and proof of residence.

That is why I find the entire discussion of immigration and voter rights so frustrating in the US, it is just a fucking tangled rat’s nest of conflicting interests.

re: #29 The Ghost of Quesos Past

Anything “to win”

That’s a huge shift from her previous position of not involving herself in voting at all, as she thought as a veteran she should not vote on civilian government. “People along the riverbank on both sides will have great views of both vessels,” according to Belle of Cincinnati Captain Alan Bernstein.

If you’d like an even closer look at the race, you can purchase a $30 ticket to ride the Belle of Cincinnati as she attempts to outpace the other steamboats. (It might be a tough match-up — the Duchess won the Great Steamboat Race at the Kentucky Derby Festival in 2018.) According to BB Riverboats, the company that owns the Belle, there will be a DJ, a cash bar and snacks on board.

That depends on where you live. I didn’t need any ID to buy a house, open a bank account, or show proof of residence to register my car. Everyone knows me here.

As for the claims of in-person voter fraud and benefits fraud, every bit of that could be solved with a national ID. Most countries use them.

But when you try to bring that up, you get anti-government wingnuts and a whole bunch of Christians who think that is some sort of satanic plan.

The best method of quelling their fears is also the one they won’t use.

Much of conservatism is like that (sex ed and contraception is the best methods for reducing abortion rates, so they oppose sex ed and contraception).

When I was an exchange high school student in Brazil, the federal government issued me a resident foreigner ID card.

Similarly, when my first wife and I were in Spain, the Spanish government issued us foreign resident ID cards which looked like US military ID cards, except where the logo of the military service goes on the card (the Navy logo), Spain put the royal arms (and the ID cards were white).

In 2015, after my wife got her settlement from the fraud case surrounding her IRA with Digital Equipment Corporation’s contracted bank. She opened an IRA and I opened a savings account with a lottery prize cheque (at the agricultural bank in Lisco, population 68).

We opened our main account in Bridgeport (checking and a safe deposit box) in 2012.

Huh. Our local banks still do Christmas Club accounts for children.

The problem here is nobody issues credit cards, so very few businesses will accept them. (Our cards are both originally my wife’s cards from out-of-state banks. No one in their right minds would have issued me a credit card when I was homeless, but people were falling all over her to issue them when she was in college and aged sixteen.)

Odd banking story from me.

During my Homeless Era, during the period I was sofa-surfing on my mother’s sofa, my sister suggested I open a bank account at Washington Mutual because the people in that branch across the street were very friendly and made a point of treating you like you were the most important thing in the day when you went in.

I did so.

Fast forward many years: I was in Oklahoma married to my wife now, but I still maintained my checking account at WaMu in Chicago (WaMu allowed homeless people to have bank accounts, thus I was a loyal customer).

We traveled to Chicago because my step-father was in the hospital for heart surgery; I decided to close that account. (I had about $100 on deposit.)

I went into the bank just before closing to wind up my account; the manager was very concerned about me closing out my account.

After listening to why I wanted to do it (I lived in Oklahoma and there were no WaMu branches there), they paid out my deposits in full and closed the account.

Overnight, the Feds swept in and closed Washington Mutual.

It is my firm conviction that the only money WaMu had at that point was my $100, and when I took it out, that collapsed the bank. /s

My guess on the manager calling me in to ask me why I wanted to close my account was he thought that perhaps the impending closure of the bank had leaked out somehow and he was concerned for a last-minute bank run.

Considering the crapfest WaMu customers went through to get their deposits after the bank collapsed, that was one heck of a lucky break for me.

Now this is tantalizing.

The size and provenance of his wealth and the intricacies of his alleged sex trafficking operation are not the only mysteries surrounding Jeffrey Epstein. There are questions about why he did not have to register as a sex offender in New Mexico, where he owns a large ranch with a 26,700-square-foot mansion, and why prosecutors and police in New York — where his Manhattan townhouse is worth at least $100 million according to luxury real estate agent Dolly Lenz — but not judges appeared to treat him leniently.

And then there’s Epstein’s private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands. With Epstein in jail in New York, “it’s quiet now on the island of Little St. James,” Bloomberg News reports. “Epstein dubbed it Little St. Jeff’s. Locals have other names for it: Pedophile Island and Orgy Island.” On St. Thomas, where Epstein’s businesses are headquartered in an unmarked office in a nondescript strip mall, “he has been a subject of lurid speculation for as long as anyone can remember,” Bloomberg says. “Tourists still take boats out to get a glimpse of the island,” topped with a blue-and-white building that resembles a temple.

A former employee told Bloomberg that Epstein ferried groups of young women out to his island after they flew into St. Thomas, and the crew of groundskeepers had strict orders that Epstein could never catch sight of them. “The only unusual aspect of the main residence the former worker said he was aware of were the security boxes in two offices,” Bloomberg reports. “The level of secrecy around a steel safe in Epstein’s office, in particular, suggested it contained much more than just money, he said. Outside of an occasional visit by a housekeeper, no one was allowed in those rooms.” Presumably, the FBI could ask a judge for access, too

Granted it’s just hearsay. But again, it wouldn’t be surprising if such a think existed.

And if it did exist, I’d be exceedingly curious as to what’s in those security boxes.

Maybe some very high-value extortion material? The really good stuff? The kind of material that could bring down princes, potentates and dare I say…….a current President of Mr. Epstein’s acquaintance?

Which is why I am frustrated at the entire argument because it allows the conservatives to implement measures that are ostensibly to prevent abuse but obviously intended to disenfranchise.

I agree; conservative arguments are disingenuous. They claim there is massive in-person voter fraud (somehow that fraud seems to always come out as Republicans, as in the recent North Carolina ballot theft case), yet refuse to implement any solutions which would assuage their fears.

On top of that, in-person voter fraud is the most difficult fraud to swing an election, save in some small town like mine, where it’s not worth it.

See all the wingnuts who went wild over Palm Beach County, Florida’s recount of votes ( a county with over a million people), claiming Democrats were stealing an election.

How come no one on the right raised hell over my own voter recount (mandated by state law) which took over a month before the election was certified?

Their outrage seems pretty selective.

In my own voter recount, I wasn’t claiming Republicans were trying to steal an election. I waited patiently for the results, occasionally dropping in to the county clerk to see if the recount was done.

When the result was in from the state confirming I’d lost by two votes, I didn’t start bellyaching that the fix was in or some other nonsense. At my last board meeting where the person who defeated me was sworn in, I congratulated him for his electoral victory.

If Bill Clinton is involved, lock his butt up. As far as I can tell, conservatives think everything is political. They don’t seem to get that liberals think if Clinton is involved, he should be tried like everyone else.

re: #196 Anymouse 🌹

Conservative commentators on social media are still going on with “What about Bill Clinton? You really want to go there?”

If Bill Clinton is involved, lock his butt up. As far as I can tell, conservatives think everything is political. They don’t seem to get that liberals think if Clinton is involved, he should be tried like everyone else.

I don’t understand the sort of thinking where paedophilia is a political game. On the other hand, conservatives circled the wagons around the Duggars.

It’s projection. They assume that we will always circle the wagons around one of ours and espouse hypocrisy because that’s exactly what they would do. They don’t comprehend the idea that we wouldn’t fall on our swords to protect ‘one of ours’ if he was discovered to be a criminal fuck. It’s all gamesmanship to them, with no actual moral underpinning.

The sad fact of the matter is that this is why they succeed politically so often: our own willingness to accept consequences and shed ourselves of problematic allies gets weaponized against us and their unwillingness to admit fault just ends up colored as a grand political virtue.

Dr Lizardo  Jul 12, 2019 • 9:19:58am

Well, well, well…….

For years, the WCF has acted as the primary bridge between American Christian fundamentalists and Russian partners. Helping export regressive anti-LGBTQ policies to Russia, the WCF has served as a platform since the mid-1990s for bringing together some of the most backward, homophobic voices internationally.

Along the way, it has also picked up financing and support from numerous Russian officials and oligarchs specifically sanctioned by the United States. Former Russian Railways chief Vladimir Yakunin and sanctioned Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofeev have both served as patrons of the WCF’s efforts, especially over the past few years, even going so far as to reportedly directly fund and sponsor WCF-related events.

Just last year, Yelena Mizulina, a Russian Duma member, was a featured speaker at the WCF’s annual conference, where she joined speakers railing against progressive policies. At the close of the conference, WCF chief Brian Brown called for those assembled to celebrate the “depths of … friendships” between the American and Russian figures featured at the event, claiming they were “creating friendships of trust.”

But that’s not all. Over the years, the WCF’s Russian representative, Alexey Komov — who works directly for the sanctioned Malofeev — has tried to ingratiate himself with numerous American far-right organizations. As ThinkProgress has detailed, these groups range from the far-right Home School Legal Defense Association, which has grown close to Komov over the past few years, to Movieguide, the leading American Christian film organization. Komov even managed in 2014 to schmooze with Ben Carson, now President Donald Trump’s secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and tried to connect with other right-wing fundraisers in the United States shortly afterward.

thinkprogress.org

TL;DR - the World Congress of Families, a well-known anti-LGBTQ fundie hate group, seems to be in cahoots with the Kremlin.

Quelle surprise.

The legal guy on ABC this morning made the point that, as much as we don’t like it, there is a presumption of innocence, which is why bail is offered. Which is why it’s all the more evil that a poor person should be asked to pay more than they have.

There is no justice for those who are poor. The Florida GOP just implemented a law that disenfranchises the poor who were otherwise supposed to have voting rights restored. Our vaunted system of justice and law has little to do with justice.

Another cheery thought… Trump loses in 2020 and the right wing domestic terrorists he helped stoke hate/fear/loathing of minorities, women, etc., go on a binger.

Right-wing terrorism has grabbed public attention in the Trump era, thanks to a series of bloody attacks on synagogues, black churches, and mosques. The violence itself is shocking enough, but President Donald Trump’s reaction to it—a mix of denial and equivocation—proved even more galling to many Americans. For white supremacists themselves, the Trump era is a golden one, reversing the steady marginalization the cause had suffered since the civil rights era. But for those hoping that right-wing terrorism will decline should Trump leave office after 2020, the reverse is more likely. The movement behind the attacks is far stronger than it was when Trump took office, and his defeat at the polls is likely to ignite conspiracy theories and convince many radicals that their government is once again in the hands of enemies. Trump himself may encourage such sentiments from out of office.

Prosecuting Trump for criminal acts while in office might also spur his extremist base to act - self-fulfilling acts, where the rule of law holding Trump accountable is spun as a conspiracy/deep state bulkshit into taking action to protect “the rule of law”.
