Agreed. All the arguing here about spending village board money on infrastructure improvements in my final months on the board. The town wanted them, but didn’t seem to understand their complaints about how poor our sand streets were was because the town was not spending money on road gravel.

The very last thing I accomplished on the board was getting a purchase order for proper road gravel through, and paying a grading company to spread it.

We now have proper streets, and a few people have thanked me for that. (I don’t know if they are the same people who voted for me though.)

Painting our water system pumps and plumbing (which also cost a bunch of money) was also an infrastructure maintenance project. A lot of people couldn’t see why that needed to be done on our dime (other than the state told us to).

We don’t have the benefit of such a large business like Costco here. (There are none anywhere around here.)

State sales taxes don’t support municipalities here; property taxes do. Someone a couple years ago proposed instituting a village sales tax (state law would allow us to impose 1/8%) to hit tourists on US-26 going to Yellowstone and using the gun shop for hunting ammo.

I opposed it, and it was defeated. I despise flat taxes anyway, and I showed the tax would actually hurt our own village more than any alleged tourist income. It would have also hit other businesses in town which do not cater to tourists, such as the beauty salon and the art teacher (she also sells art supplies).

It’s the same process you can see at play between the Roberts Court and the people trying to justify gerrymandering…and now with the batted-down attempt to switch legal teams regarding the census.

It’s arguing in bad faith—all rhetoric, no central belief in the validity of law, precedent, or separation of powers—but in front of a complicit arbiter who’s willing to patiently wait until an statement that is plausible is introduced.

Basically, everything becomes theater. Veracity is substituted with versimilitude, and all thought becomes aesthetic.

I mean, we can see this when we look at pundits and grifters. They encourage people to not have a consistent episteme, and substitute a sort of gut-feeling emotional impression paired with ritualized (highly emotional) repetition of rote statements that generally involve the inherent wrongness of anyone that is deemed “other” and thus no need to argue seriously or give ear to good faith counterarguments.

He’s “the hero us manlets need and deserve,” gushed someone called ManletHalfCurry.

Others went further. He “was speaking truth that is never spoken about the suffering of manlets,” wrote someone called ScornedStoic. “He’s our prophet.”

“He is my god now.,” declared desperatecel178.

Others lamented he didn’t go full on Isla Vista shooter, or issued threats against the guy who took him down.

Newton’s laws (at 36:23) and the definitions at the beginning are somewhat understandable but the rest of the passage is mostly incomprehensible.

In the latter half of the video, only the corollaries are read out and not their explanations which were often very visual and didn’t make sense to listen to. There is also a small section about absolute motion from the first scholium which is missing.

Once again, all the talk about cleaning up voter rolls comes from the fact that right wingers want to purge people and make it more difficult to vote. There are rules in various states that automatically purge those who haven’t voted in X number of years, and there are other rules in place that don’t always update the rolls when someone moves or passes away.

That latter bit is where the nonsensical calls of voter fraud come into play. These folks love to claim that voter fraud is widespread, when in every reputable study and examination of voting in the US, there’s a vanishingly small number of cases, and a bunch don’t even get prosecuted (as in the NC instance, where a daughter voted for her dead mother and the prosecutor (R) dropped the case because it was a vote for Trump).

The far greater harm is vote suppression, which deprives far more people the right to vote - and that’s the ongoing GOP effort over the past decade. Trump’s go-to right wing extremist Kobach would try and throw out votes, or claim voter fraud for typos. You know, like the one where Kobach’s team failed to properly spell Kobach’s first name.

Voter fraud is a ginned up controversy to cover for the GOP effort at voter suppression. Voter ID and rules to require ID make it more difficult to vote, especially among minority and elderly populations, who don’t always have proper ID, and these same states reduce the number of DMVs that are open, their hours, and target minority/poor locations for even steeper service cuts, limiting where/how they can get the very ID needed to vote.

This is a systematic effort to deprive people of their rights.

As such, you saw things here like Kansas trying to disenfranchise active duty military voters and their dependents, after Kansas passed its voter ID law (then spent insane amounts of money defending it against people who used federal mail-in ballots, like military personnel). Kansas claimed they could not check the ID of military personnel or dependents using federal absentee ballots, the federal government argued in court that was unconstitutional and unnecessary as absentee ballots from military personnel and dependents are countersigned by military officers rank O-4 and above. (That would be Sam Brownback’s term in Kansas, with Kris Kobach as his wingman.)

I don’t know where so many non-military voters get the idea that conservatives care about military personnel and veterans, because everything the GOP does screws us.

China Lake was shuttered following the quake, and personnel moved to another air base. It’s in the process of reopening.

The 4.4 quake in Washington is several magnitudes lower than the 6.6 or 7.1 quake that hit in CA.

It is possible that this could be a foreshock of a bigger quake in WA, but that’s nothing that can be predicted. It’s a different fault system in play, but the Cascadia system has been notoriously quiet, which means that the pressure has been building towards another big quake for years now.

That made sense back in the days when votes had to be counted by hand and the results transported by courier to the seat of the EC.

I would just like to point out for argument’s sake (because it will never be implemented) that a system in which we all have a mandatory national picture ID (one for citizens, one for legal resident aliens) and a single registered address would do a lot to reduce issues of abuse of social services, any questions of voter fraud or disenfranchisement, or illegal employment.

Heck, one cannot even sign a lease, open a bank account, enroll one’s children in school or register a vehicle without showing ID and proof of residence.

That is why I find the entire discussion of immigration and voter rights so frustrating in the US, it is just a fucking tangled rat’s nest of conflicting interests.

CINCINNATI — A trio of steamboats will race up the Ohio River next week for the first time since 2006.

The American Duchess, American Queen and Belle of Cincinnati will put their engines to the test July 15 at 3 p.m., racing from the Purple People Bridge to St. Rose’s Church to the Serpentine Wall at Yeatman’s Cove.

Similarly, when my first wife and I were in Spain, the Spanish government issued us foreign resident ID cards which looked like US military ID cards, except where the logo of the military service goes on the card (the Navy logo), Spain put the royal arms (and the ID cards were white).

The problem here is nobody issues credit cards, so very few businesses will accept them. (Our cards are both originally my wife’s cards from out-of-state banks. No one in their right minds would have issued me a credit card when I was homeless, but people were falling all over her to issue them when she was in college and aged sixteen.)

Odd banking story from me.

During my Homeless Era, during the period I was sofa-surfing on my mother’s sofa, my sister suggested I open a bank account at Washington Mutual because the people in that branch across the street were very friendly and made a point of treating you like you were the most important thing in the day when you went in.

I did so.

Fast forward many years: I was in Oklahoma married to my wife now, but I still maintained my checking account at WaMu in Chicago (WaMu allowed homeless people to have bank accounts, thus I was a loyal customer).

We traveled to Chicago because my step-father was in the hospital for heart surgery; I decided to close that account. (I had about $100 on deposit.)

I went into the bank just before closing to wind up my account; the manager was very concerned about me closing out my account.

After listening to why I wanted to do it (I lived in Oklahoma and there were no WaMu branches there), they paid out my deposits in full and closed the account.

Overnight, the Feds swept in and closed Washington Mutual.

It is my firm conviction that the only money WaMu had at that point was my $100, and when I took it out, that collapsed the bank. /s

My guess on the manager calling me in to ask me why I wanted to close my account was he thought that perhaps the impending closure of the bank had leaked out somehow and he was concerned for a last-minute bank run.

Considering the crapfest WaMu customers went through to get their deposits after the bank collapsed, that was one heck of a lucky break for me.

I agree; conservative arguments are disingenuous. They claim there is massive in-person voter fraud (somehow that fraud seems to always come out as Republicans, as in the recent North Carolina ballot theft case), yet refuse to implement any solutions which would assuage their fears.

On top of that, in-person voter fraud is the most difficult fraud to swing an election, save in some small town like mine, where it’s not worth it.

See all the wingnuts who went wild over Palm Beach County, Florida’s recount of votes ( a county with over a million people), claiming Democrats were stealing an election.

How come no one on the right raised hell over my own voter recount (mandated by state law) which took over a month before the election was certified?

Their outrage seems pretty selective.

In my own voter recount, I wasn’t claiming Republicans were trying to steal an election. I waited patiently for the results, occasionally dropping in to the county clerk to see if the recount was done.

When the result was in from the state confirming I’d lost by two votes, I didn’t start bellyaching that the fix was in or some other nonsense. At my last board meeting where the person who defeated me was sworn in, I congratulated him for his electoral victory.

It’s projection. They assume that we will always circle the wagons around one of ours and espouse hypocrisy because that’s exactly what they would do. They don’t comprehend the idea that we wouldn’t fall on our swords to protect ‘one of ours’ if he was discovered to be a criminal fuck. It’s all gamesmanship to them, with no actual moral underpinning.

The sad fact of the matter is that this is why they succeed politically so often: our own willingness to accept consequences and shed ourselves of problematic allies gets weaponized against us and their unwillingness to admit fault just ends up colored as a grand political virtue.

For years, the WCF has acted as the primary bridge between American Christian fundamentalists and Russian partners. Helping export regressive anti-LGBTQ policies to Russia, the WCF has served as a platform since the mid-1990s for bringing together some of the most backward, homophobic voices internationally.

Along the way, it has also picked up financing and support from numerous Russian officials and oligarchs specifically sanctioned by the United States. Former Russian Railways chief Vladimir Yakunin and sanctioned Russian oligarch Konstantin Malofeev have both served as patrons of the WCF’s efforts, especially over the past few years, even going so far as to reportedly directly fund and sponsor WCF-related events.

Just last year, Yelena Mizulina, a Russian Duma member, was a featured speaker at the WCF’s annual conference, where she joined speakers railing against progressive policies. At the close of the conference, WCF chief Brian Brown called for those assembled to celebrate the “depths of … friendships” between the American and Russian figures featured at the event, claiming they were “creating friendships of trust.”

But that’s not all. Over the years, the WCF’s Russian representative, Alexey Komov — who works directly for the sanctioned Malofeev — has tried to ingratiate himself with numerous American far-right organizations. As ThinkProgress has detailed, these groups range from the far-right Home School Legal Defense Association, which has grown close to Komov over the past few years, to Movieguide, the leading American Christian film organization. Komov even managed in 2014 to schmooze with Ben Carson, now President Donald Trump’s secretary of Housing and Urban Development, and tried to connect with other right-wing fundraisers in the United States shortly afterward.

The violence itself is shocking enough, but President Donald Trump’s reaction to it—a mix of denial and equivocation—proved even more galling to many Americans. For white supremacists themselves, the Trump era is a golden one, reversing the steady marginalization the cause had suffered since the civil rights era. But for those hoping that right-wing terrorism will decline should Trump leave office after 2020, the reverse is more likely. The movement behind the attacks is far stronger than it was when Trump took office, and his defeat at the polls is likely to ignite conspiracy theories and convince many radicals that their government is once again in the hands of enemies. Trump himself may encourage such sentiments from out of office.

On this particular issue, I can understand it. IF (big IF) he really does invest for people, it is possible that they are unaware of what has been ongoing forever. And I think it is unfair for some innocent rich person (which hypothetically is possible) to get smeared in with this asshole.
